:00:07. > :00:12.No problem, but it's been murder on the M1.

:00:13. > :00:39.Hello and a welcome to the last One Show of the year with Alex

:00:40. > :01:08.Even though it is a Friday! What an arrival this is! Thank you very

:01:09. > :01:10.much. And there is a reason for all of this.

:01:11. > :01:12.We're arriving in style tonight, because our guests

:01:13. > :01:15.are from the brand new Russian epic War and Peace, coming

:01:16. > :01:19.One of them you might know as Downton's sweet and fashionable

:01:20. > :01:21.Lady Rose, who recently also starred as Cinderella.

:01:22. > :01:24.The other played a very bad boy in Happy Valley and very good

:01:25. > :01:28.Please welcome War and Peace's Lily James and James Norton.

:01:29. > :01:48.Merry Christmas! What have you got planned for the show? Just kidding!

:01:49. > :01:53.The arrival and the wintry surroundings, does it remind you of

:01:54. > :01:59.Russia? It does. The snow is a bit colder. I shouldn't say this is fake

:02:00. > :02:05.snow, should I? Did you have a snow machine onset? Did it make real

:02:06. > :02:09.snow? We had real snow at the start when we were first filming, and then

:02:10. > :02:13.it melted. In one scene we were endeavouring to sled through the

:02:14. > :02:19.snow, but it was mad, so in a very British way we carried on, but we

:02:20. > :02:27.had to reshoot with what felt like parmesan. Sliding through cheese! We

:02:28. > :02:30.look forward to hearing all about it during the show.

:02:31. > :02:33.Tonight find out what happened when our house chef took mince pies

:02:34. > :02:41.Have Ricky's treats "stollen" their hearts?

:02:42. > :02:53.And we'll be going behind the scenes at a school nativity.

:02:54. > :02:57.Well, if it's audience participation we're doing tonight,

:02:58. > :03:02.# On the first day of Christmas my true love sent to me.

:03:03. > :03:18.Today I've come to see if the people here know the words. Do you know the

:03:19. > :03:26.words to 12 days of Christmas? # On the eighth day of Christmas, my

:03:27. > :03:34.true love sent to me. Four calling birds. Do you know 12 days of

:03:35. > :03:45.Christmas? # On the ninth day of Christmas my

:03:46. > :03:50.true love centimetre... ? Nine? On the first day of Christmas, my true

:03:51. > :03:56.love sent to me, a partridge in a pear tree.

:03:57. > :04:07.# Two turtledoves and a partridge in a pear tree. I will be famous now!

:04:08. > :04:14.# Three French hens, two turtledoves and a partridge in a poetry.

:04:15. > :04:21.# On the 12th day of Christmas, my true love sent to me...

:04:22. > :04:26.# 12 drummers drumming # 11 pipers piping

:04:27. > :04:32.# Ten lords leaping # Nine ladies dancing

:04:33. > :04:35.# Eight maids milking # Seven swans swimming

:04:36. > :04:40.# Six geese laying # Five gold rings

:04:41. > :04:44.# Four calling birds # Three French hens

:04:45. > :04:54.# Two turtledoves # And a partridge in a pear tree!

:04:55. > :04:56.APPLAUSE Everybody knows five gold rings,

:04:57. > :05:01.because it is the big one! War and Peace is widely known

:05:02. > :05:03.as the novel that no Lily you read between takes

:05:04. > :05:13.on Downton, didn't you? How long did it take you? It took me

:05:14. > :05:21.a long while, but I knew I had the part for quite a long time, so I had

:05:22. > :05:29.the time to read it. So you accepted the role before you read the book?

:05:30. > :05:33.Yes. The book really is a masterpiece, and it is amazing that

:05:34. > :05:39.it is easy to read. The first 50 pages aren't. You get stuck. The

:05:40. > :05:43.first paragraph is in French, and then he introduces 20 characters in

:05:44. > :05:48.three pages, so most people give up. But once you get over that hurdle,

:05:49. > :05:51.we described it as a soap opera, because it is just loads of

:05:52. > :06:02.characters. We have seen how you got hold of your copy. Here it is. This

:06:03. > :06:07.is Happy Valley! That's ideal. Did you keep that copy? Actually, that

:06:08. > :06:10.copy crops up in the second series, as well. Which we have just filmed.

:06:11. > :06:19.There is a weird symbiosis. Now, while James and Lily have read

:06:20. > :06:22.all half a million words, many have tried and failed to make

:06:23. > :06:26.it to the end of War and Peace. So we asked our resident Russian

:06:27. > :06:28.and friend of the show, Here's Yevgeny's War

:06:29. > :06:55.and Peace in two minutes. It is July 1805, and old Saint

:06:56. > :06:59.Petersburg feared the advance of Napoleon. The socially awkward

:07:00. > :07:08.Pierre is introduced to Russian society. Two brilliant young Prince

:07:09. > :07:13.Andre who declares, you will join the Army. Leave your pregnant wife

:07:14. > :07:20.if you will, Pierre says, but I shall eat and drink for Russia. That

:07:21. > :07:27.will be my duty for the motherland. And the beautiful Natasha IS up

:07:28. > :07:37.potential husbands, knowing that men might soon become rather scarce. War

:07:38. > :07:47.proves more terrible than Prince Andrei expected, dreams as well as

:07:48. > :07:54.men died. I embrace it, Prince Andrei murmurs. A few years later,

:07:55. > :07:58.Pierre marries Helen. He almost killed her lover in a duel when she

:07:59. > :08:10.cheats on him. Then he has an existential meltdown. Andrei begs

:08:11. > :08:16.Natasha to marry him. But her father is making them wait for a year, and

:08:17. > :08:21.she is bound to have fallen for the womanising by then. By 1812, Pierre

:08:22. > :08:26.is beside himself when Napoleon invaded again, and he vows to kill

:08:27. > :08:33.him. As the Andrei, he is injured yet again on the front line, and

:08:34. > :08:40.taken to Moscow wounded. Will love taking to Natasha? Will Pierre kill

:08:41. > :08:49.Napoleon? I won't ruin the ending for you. But through battlefields

:08:50. > :08:56.and ballrooms, births and deaths, a young hero will confront life's

:08:57. > :09:00.great question of love and destiny, war and peace.

:09:01. > :09:16.APPLAUSE He will now go down in history in so

:09:17. > :09:22.many literature lessons! Lily, you didn't have to read it. I

:09:23. > :09:25.wouldn't have, if I had known! Your character is dead that and all the

:09:26. > :09:34.men fall for her. What is it about her? I think she is just so open,

:09:35. > :09:40.ha-ha is beating and she's really genuine, hopeless romantic. She's

:09:41. > :09:47.just a breath of fresh air, and that's really infectious. And you

:09:48. > :09:50.start playing her at 13, and then make that transition all the way up

:09:51. > :09:56.into adult life, so you really get to know her at every stage. You see

:09:57. > :10:01.her grow, and you see how that open spirit is taken advantage of, and

:10:02. > :10:06.how that longing for love leads her into allsorts of trouble and

:10:07. > :10:11.heartache. And James, Prince Andrei is a tortured soul. It is heavy

:10:12. > :10:21.stuff. Was not quite difficult to you to play the whole time? That

:10:22. > :10:29.Darkside? Yes, he is really fed up. Fed up with the Russian winter!

:10:30. > :10:38.There is a lot going on in Prince Andrei. It is a big challenge. A

:10:39. > :10:49.year one of these method actors who goes in and out of character? Very

:10:50. > :10:52.grumpy! The director was always telling him not to smile. That was

:10:53. > :10:58.my most regular direction from the director, stop smiling! And let's

:10:59. > :11:03.see James as Prince Andrei desperate to get into battle.

:11:04. > :11:10.Your Grace, a request permission to join the action. It is 7000 men

:11:11. > :11:19.against 40 5000. If one quarter of them come back tomorrow, I will

:11:20. > :11:30.thank God. -- 40 5000. That is why I am asking to be one of them. Death

:11:31. > :11:35.or glory? I won't stop you. How did those locations, Russia, Latvia,

:11:36. > :11:40.help you? They were magical. There was one particular moment where Lily

:11:41. > :11:48.and I were waltzing in Catherine the great's summer Palace, and this huge

:11:49. > :11:51.ballroom. Your eyes were blinded because it was so shiny in the

:11:52. > :11:58.candlelight and the mirrors. It was a blur like falling in love, it was

:11:59. > :12:05.amazing. What a lovely phrase! With Whitney Houston! Are privileged to

:12:06. > :12:06.spend six months filming in these beautiful places with an amazing

:12:07. > :12:11.cast. It's quite a cast-

:12:12. > :12:13.Gillian Anderson, Ade Edmonson, James you described it as a bit

:12:14. > :12:25.like being on a trip We had a little karaoke, Lily gave

:12:26. > :12:29.us her best Bohemian Rhapsody. St Petersburg was a lot of fun because

:12:30. > :12:32.we were all out at the same time and staying in the same hotel, we were

:12:33. > :12:39.all very overexcited because it is such a special place. The 3rd of

:12:40. > :12:44.January, it starts, BBC One, nine o'clock. Thinking ahead to Downton,

:12:45. > :12:47.the Christmas bash, your character went away, got married, so are you

:12:48. > :12:55.going to be watching yourself on Christmas Day? Yes. I might save it

:12:56. > :13:03.for Boxing Day, but I'm so excited about it, it is a wonderful ending.

:13:04. > :13:06.So Roses back? Iamb back. Too late now!

:13:07. > :13:10.Everybody will be pleased. It's been 16 degrees in some places

:13:11. > :13:12.this week before Christmas, so quite fitting that the Vaynor

:13:13. > :13:15.First School featured sunbathing Australian surfers

:13:16. > :13:18.in their nativity. The characters are getting

:13:19. > :13:21.stranger each year - here's our Michael Douglas meeting

:13:22. > :13:31.the nativity cat of County Down. # Snow is falling

:13:32. > :13:38.# All around us # Children playing

:13:39. > :13:42.# Having fun. I have had to help out with the

:13:43. > :13:46.festive weather, but these kids are the real deal. I am here to help

:13:47. > :13:53.them get ready for their Christmas nativity.

:13:54. > :13:58.First, let's check that everyone's here. Halep! How many sheep have we

:13:59. > :14:12.got? How many kings? How many shepherds?

:14:13. > :14:17.You are a donkey? I'm a camel! Have we got Joseph in the room? Stand up

:14:18. > :14:25.and let's have a look at you. What a great outfit. Who has made it? Did

:14:26. > :14:31.your mum make it? Shop. But I'm here to cut hair, and first

:14:32. > :14:39.up is the director, class one's teacher Mrs Matheson. We had aliens

:14:40. > :14:43.last year. Christmas of the aliens. Do you see a change in some kids

:14:44. > :14:47.after they have been through the process of putting on a performance?

:14:48. > :14:54.Children that you didn't expect to be as confident or as outgoing

:14:55. > :14:58.actually when they are given an outlet to actually perform, they can

:14:59. > :15:07.surprise you. And I've also got a surprise for Mrs Matheson. How's

:15:08. > :15:17.that? I love it. Perfect, thank you. This is called the landlord's cat.

:15:18. > :15:29.The title role is Lily, she has help from her mum. What is missing? Ears!

:15:30. > :15:33.I have never done catty is on such a little head, but we will give it a

:15:34. > :15:43.go. I remember I played King once and I had to wear tights, it was

:15:44. > :15:47.quite. Tights? We have backcombed your hair, we will give it some

:15:48. > :15:51.padding and make some twists. You ready to take look at your cat ears?

:15:52. > :16:02.What you think of that? A like it! As the actors make their way to the

:16:03. > :16:10.stage, the parents take their seats, I've just got time to meet Siobhan.

:16:11. > :16:17.Argue nervous -- are you nervous about Siobhan? I am nervous. They

:16:18. > :16:25.are both wearing traditional Ghanaian shirts. He loves embracing

:16:26. > :16:31.his African heritage. Yes, he does. His daddy is from Ghana, so we've

:16:32. > :16:39.borrowed some of his performing shirts. Nice, OK. Wow! Frank you

:16:40. > :16:48.very much. It's showtime and I've got a great

:16:49. > :16:56.seat. # Our work is never-ending, there's

:16:57. > :17:00.so much more to do # All day long it's knock knock

:17:01. > :17:06.knock # Knock knock knock.

:17:07. > :17:15.One winter all of the people born in Bethlehem were told to return,

:17:16. > :17:29.everyone of them needed a place to stay. And every parent would agree,

:17:30. > :17:33.they are all stars of the show. Even a cat can look at the King!

:17:34. > :17:41.APPLAUSE I'm sure you will agree some

:17:42. > :17:45.fantastic performances all round. It was wonderful.

:17:46. > :17:47.Now our audience tonight isn't just feeling Christmassy,

:17:48. > :17:53.All their surnames have something to do with Christmas.

:17:54. > :17:56.Lily and James, see if you can guess what they are in our

:17:57. > :18:07.This couple are named after something you normally

:18:08. > :18:09.put your feet in, but at Christmas they're stuffed with

:18:10. > :18:25.a mince pie, a glass of sherry and has lots of little helpers,

:18:26. > :18:46.These three are named after an animal that has

:18:47. > :18:50.a very shiny nose, and if you ever saw it, you would even say it glows.

:18:51. > :18:59.after something my true love sent to me on the first day of christmas.

:19:00. > :19:05.Partridge. Partridge, very good. The Partridge family.

:19:06. > :19:22.Christmas! You're not?! Merry Christmas to all our families, thank

:19:23. > :19:27.you for taking part, isn't that lovely? We're going to drop in on

:19:28. > :19:31.our neighbours at the All Souls Church next door for a spot of carol

:19:32. > :19:37.singing. While we head over there, here's our chef Ricky doing his best

:19:38. > :19:40.for Anglo-German relations through the medium of the mince pie.

:19:41. > :19:50.Nothing smells like a Christmas market, that heady mix of blue vine

:19:51. > :19:54.and sausage. We fallen for this continental import. Germany has more

:19:55. > :19:58.than two and a half thousand festive markets, more than anywhere else in

:19:59. > :20:04.Europe. Where better to experience one than here in Bavaria? Just

:20:05. > :20:08.outside Munich, traditional and novelty yuletide streets. Like

:20:09. > :20:24.gluhwein with a fiery twist. And waffles on the sticks. At

:20:25. > :20:32.Christmas time lots of us love to dig into German delicacies like

:20:33. > :20:38.these, but what British festive food will get a warm reception here?

:20:39. > :20:42.Let's find out with our One Show wonderland of mince pies and

:20:43. > :20:50.Christmas puddings. My competition is a chef selling his Bavarian

:20:51. > :20:55.biscuits and stollen. The taste is good, we don't have it in Germany.

:20:56. > :21:00.Nothing similar. Do you think I could sell more of this than you

:21:01. > :21:05.could sell stollen? Never, never, stollen is traditional produce and

:21:06. > :21:10.it's on every table in all of the land. Do you fancy a competition?

:21:11. > :21:17.Let's do it. This is going to be tough. Martin has won prizes for his

:21:18. > :21:21.stollen, filled with raisins, currents and marzipan. Will my

:21:22. > :21:34.festive fair to go Bavarian taste buds? What is the name? Mince pies.

:21:35. > :21:42.Inside alcohol? Alcohol, yes. Bavarian people prefer to drink the

:21:43. > :21:47.alcohol and the British people eats alcohol. I might have stolen to map

:21:48. > :21:55.of your customers, they like mince pies more value stollen. No! I think

:21:56. > :22:04.I might have this in the bag. Do you prefer this or stollen? Stollen.

:22:05. > :22:20.Stollen is better. I've looked up mince pies in German. I think now

:22:21. > :22:26.I'm going to sell more. ,, and get your Hackfleischtorte. It must be

:22:27. > :22:31.the accent. It's a nice taste, I like it. I think you can sell a lot

:22:32. > :22:35.of it. Is it better than stollen? No. To start

:22:36. > :22:50.I might resort to a couple of dirty tricks. Finally, some true converts.

:22:51. > :22:57.Rather nice. Better than stollen? This is small so it's easy to beat.

:22:58. > :23:03.You are a convert? Yes. Would you have it instead of stollen. Yes, I

:23:04. > :23:09.think it's better. I would take mince pies. Seems mince pies might

:23:10. > :23:13.have earned their place on the market. What will Bavarians make of

:23:14. > :23:15.our Christmas puddings? The German one is a bit too dry, I like that

:23:16. > :23:29.one. After a day of selling, time for the

:23:30. > :23:33.verdict. Hello, Martin, half the people I gave my puddings and pies

:23:34. > :23:38.to like mine as much as yours. No. Yes, definitely. In the spirit of

:23:39. > :23:43.Christmas, we agreed to call it a draw. We might not be able to agree

:23:44. > :23:52.on what to eat but we agree on what we drink, gluhwein. Cheers! Prost.

:23:53. > :23:55.# Ding dong merrily on high In heav'n the bells are ringing

:23:56. > :24:03.# Gloria Is riv'n with angel singing

:24:04. > :24:26.APPLAUSE CHEERING

:24:27. > :24:29.Thank you to All Souls Church for welcoming us back this year,

:24:30. > :24:32.more carols on their way, in the interests of neighbourliness

:24:33. > :24:33.Lily and James are handing out mince pies.

:24:34. > :24:39.And I'm joined by some people who have been part

:24:40. > :24:43.of the One Show family this year, Team Rickshaw.

:24:44. > :24:52.APPLAUSE Team Rickshaw and...

:24:53. > :24:55.And someone I met while Team Rickshaw were on the road

:24:56. > :24:58.is Shaan Ali, who has benefitted from some of the money raised

:24:59. > :25:01.by everyone who donated to Children in Need.

:25:02. > :25:10.We've raised an awful lot of money, as you know. Yeah. A message for the

:25:11. > :25:16.people at home who donated? Guys, a big, big, thank you. Without your

:25:17. > :25:21.fundraising, without your donations, children in need wouldn't exist, all

:25:22. > :25:26.of us wouldn't be helped and our lives are made much more better than

:25:27. > :25:33.our children in need funded places. Just a big, big thank you. You are

:25:34. > :25:39.fantastic. Nobody could have put it better than that. I know that you've

:25:40. > :25:44.still been raising money since that incredible cycle ride we had, Team

:25:45. > :25:46.Rickshaw. It was the other day, your birthday, you were telling me what

:25:47. > :25:54.you were doing earlier, tell everybody at home. I went to Phantom

:25:55. > :26:02.of the Opera with my family. And I also performed with the music trust,

:26:03. > :26:10.I play the violin and we did many different songs. Katz, Swan Lake and

:26:11. > :26:13.jingle Bells. The effort you put in was incredible. -- Cats. It really

:26:14. > :26:16.was something. Now we didn't just bring

:26:17. > :26:19.you here for an end of the year get together, we brought

:26:20. > :26:21.you here because the amount of money you raised has gone up even more

:26:22. > :26:26.since we announced it in November. I know how surprised we were on

:26:27. > :26:29.children in need night. To everyone that has

:26:30. > :26:33.donated and everyone who did their bit for this

:26:34. > :26:36.year's rickshaw challenge we would like to announce

:26:37. > :26:39.the challenge has raised an unexpected, life-changing,

:26:40. > :26:56.overwhelming... APPLAUSE

:26:57. > :27:04.That's it, this year's challenge. Over 4 million.

:27:05. > :27:06.Reverend Hugh, charity brings together different

:27:07. > :27:20.I think so. I was chatting before the show with Shaan and he told me

:27:21. > :27:24.that charity giving is central to the Islamic faith and Christian

:27:25. > :27:28.living. Something like children in need appeal is to humanity, I think,

:27:29. > :27:33.that was a phenomenal total and I suspect the people who gave came

:27:34. > :27:38.from all faiths and non-. It's at the heart of your Christmas message.

:27:39. > :27:43.It is. We talk about charity beginning at home. We'll charity

:27:44. > :27:47.probably begins with God, the generous good God highlighted at

:27:48. > :27:51.Christmas. He looks and doesn't just see children in need but a world

:27:52. > :27:56.with all kinds of needs and gives extravagantly. Not a check, but he

:27:57. > :28:02.gives himself, Jesus. That is the heartbeat of Christian living. We

:28:03. > :28:06.don't give so God will give to us, we give love because he first loved

:28:07. > :28:11.us, that Christmas. Merry Christmas to you. Thank you for that message

:28:12. > :28:15.and thank you to everybody, that's all we've got time for. Have a
