0:00:16 > 0:00:19Hello and welcome to The One Show with Matt Baker.

0:00:19 > 0:00:22And Angela Scanlon.

0:00:22 > 0:00:25We've welcomed some posties in from the cold to say

0:00:25 > 0:00:27thank you for working so hard,

0:00:27 > 0:00:29ensuring that all our festive post is delivered on time

0:00:29 > 0:00:32in the run up to Christmas.

0:00:32 > 0:00:36But they haven't got the night off.

0:00:36 > 0:00:38They've also been busy delivering tonight's films.

0:00:38 > 0:00:42Shannon, what have you brought?

0:00:42 > 0:00:50I've brought a film that has shown how we create the Queen posed by

0:00:50 > 0:00:56penchee on our stamps every day.We have the story of Tom Fletcher which

0:00:56 > 0:01:00is full of Christmas surprise.

0:01:00 > 0:01:02And as well as first class films,

0:01:02 > 0:01:07we've also received a special delivery from the dark and

0:01:07 > 0:01:12twisted village of Royston Vasey.

0:01:12 > 0:01:14There is that worrying music.

0:01:14 > 0:01:16Two guests who really push the comedy envelope!

0:01:16 > 0:01:18From The League of Gentlemen, please welcome Mark Gatiss

0:01:18 > 0:01:20and Steve Pemberton!

0:01:20 > 0:01:29Hello!Higher!What a night it was last night. We're going to talk

0:01:29 > 0:01:39about it.Did you enjoy it?I'm not quite over it.I was watching it in

0:01:39 > 0:01:46bed from under the duvet. You guys have been friends for so long. We've

0:01:46 > 0:01:52got a picture actually.We have literally not changed. How can

0:01:52 > 0:01:59anyone be that then? And have that much hair! And proof that you have

0:01:59 > 0:02:07been mates since university.31 years we have known each other.EU

0:02:07 > 0:02:11exchange Christmas presents? Sometimes. Sometimes our greatest

0:02:11 > 0:02:16wish is that we have someone with a van take it all away. I'm into

0:02:16 > 0:02:24decluttering.I'll take some stuff of you.Are you one for Christmas

0:02:24 > 0:02:30cards?My brother Philip is a postman and he is hard at work. I

0:02:30 > 0:02:36gave Steve his card today. I have had delivered three. I don't seem to

0:02:36 > 0:02:42have the time to sit down. When you get a card it makes you feel guilty.

0:02:42 > 0:02:54I have a one in, one out policy. Against the clock?Yes.Well, it's

0:02:54 > 0:02:59great to have you here tonight. In these cold winter months we

0:02:59 > 0:03:07certainly rely on our emergency services more than ever.

0:03:07 > 0:03:08Including life-saving

0:03:08 > 0:03:10volunteer rescue services in remote parts of the country.

0:03:10 > 0:03:12But what happens when an emergency service,

0:03:12 > 0:03:13becomes the emergency?

0:03:13 > 0:03:15Joe has the story.

0:03:15 > 0:03:19Smoke below is from a burning building in south Wales.

0:03:19 > 0:03:25Firefighters attempt to bring the blaze inside under control. It is

0:03:25 > 0:03:31hopeless. The fire is too intense. The next day the devastation is

0:03:31 > 0:03:37clear to see. Emergency vehicles and equipment used by the Central

0:03:37 > 0:03:43Beacons Mountain rescue team blackened and charred. The rescue

0:03:43 > 0:03:49team based here has been declared to dangerous to enter and the damage

0:03:49 > 0:03:53has left a charity without the vehicles and equipment it needs to

0:03:53 > 0:04:00save lives. This year has been the busiest on record for the

0:04:00 > 0:04:04life-saving charity. Volunteers and rescuers called out over 136 times.

0:04:04 > 0:04:10It is these that is of bravery that have earned them publicity across

0:04:10 > 0:04:14social media and the local news. Viewers of BBC One will know them

0:04:14 > 0:04:20from the identity segment that appears between BBC One shows.

0:04:20 > 0:04:27Holding floss the rescue dog is team leader Hugh Jones. The team knows

0:04:27 > 0:04:31that the fire was started deliberately but that is little

0:04:31 > 0:04:41comfort with the damaging estimate to be quarter of £1 million. How

0:04:41 > 0:04:45important are those vehicles and equipment to you?Essential. We

0:04:45 > 0:04:51can't operate without it. To see it go is devastating. But the team

0:04:51 > 0:04:56haven't stopped saving lives. Just days after the fire, 21-year-old

0:04:56 > 0:04:58Curtis Chapman was badly hurt sledging. His brother Taylor rushed

0:04:58 > 0:05:07to see him.The sheet of steel tore through a sled and tour quarter of a

0:05:07 > 0:05:14way into his leg. With gear destroyed in the fire, rescuers used

0:05:14 > 0:05:19their own cars to reach Curtis and borrowed equipment from nearby teams

0:05:19 > 0:05:25to rescue him. I know your brother is still in a bad way but I know

0:05:25 > 0:05:31that you came here to say something to Hugh. They didn't have to do this

0:05:31 > 0:05:35because they are volunteers and they do a great job. Thank you.It shows

0:05:35 > 0:05:41that we are beginning to cope. Offers of help have continued to

0:05:41 > 0:05:45roll in. An ambulance is on loan from another mountain rescue team

0:05:45 > 0:05:51and the temporary base has been set up at a local fire station. Jane

0:05:51 > 0:05:57Brown is organising a fundraising walk from this rugby club.Merthyr

0:05:57 > 0:06:01Tydfil is an amazing place and people come together at this time.

0:06:01 > 0:06:07The mountains are my passion. It'd be great if we could do this for the

0:06:07 > 0:06:15rescue teams.Hugh is taking me to spot high up in Brecon Beacons. This

0:06:15 > 0:06:23is one of our main areas for turning out to call outs. This peak is where

0:06:23 > 0:06:32the BBC are identical was filmed. How was it filming that?

0:06:32 > 0:06:35Straightaway, we became proud of the fact that we were representing UK

0:06:35 > 0:06:39mountain rescue across the TV screens of Britain.Tonight the team

0:06:39 > 0:06:49is better on a training exercise in the forest above Merthyr Tydfil.

0:06:49 > 0:06:56This is the real star of the show! How was it? Floss isn't giving much

0:06:56 > 0:07:03away. So how is it for the others? People do ask if you were on the

0:07:03 > 0:07:09telly. It's easy to say that I was the one next to the dog. After the

0:07:09 > 0:07:13fire at base, the fact that the profile has been raised, we've been

0:07:13 > 0:07:18inundated with offers of help. It's really uplifting for the team. Now

0:07:18 > 0:07:26we need to start the next bit of the search. They are still determined to

0:07:26 > 0:07:31be active and ready for anyone who needs them. The next time you see

0:07:31 > 0:07:34them on your telly, spare after bought for the real story unfolding

0:07:34 > 0:07:41behind those pictures. -- spare a thought. So many people grateful for

0:07:41 > 0:07:44the fact that they are going strong.

0:07:44 > 0:07:46We spoke to The Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team earlier

0:07:46 > 0:07:49and they're hoping to get back to their premises in six months

0:07:49 > 0:07:52and hoping to have three new vehicles in nine months.

0:07:52 > 0:07:54A spokesman said they're very grateful to Jane

0:07:54 > 0:07:56and all the community fundraisers efforts, trying to get

0:07:56 > 0:07:57the service back on it's feet.

0:07:57 > 0:08:03We wish them all the best.

0:08:03 > 0:08:0820 years ago, radio listeners first heard from the bizarre residence of

0:08:08 > 0:08:15the fictional village of Royston Vaizey. Now they are back with some

0:08:15 > 0:08:27recognisable characters. Hello?Yes. Is someone there? Can I help you at

0:08:27 > 0:08:36all?Are you aware that this block is due to be demolished next week.I

0:08:36 > 0:08:41wasn't aware. I'm a woman. You shouldn't be here. This is a local

0:08:41 > 0:08:54shop for local people. There's nothing for you here.APPLAUSE

0:08:54 > 0:08:58I have watched that the number of times today. It doesn't get old. A

0:08:58 > 0:09:10quid a 3-part special after 15 years. Why now?We've all been busy

0:09:10 > 0:09:13with other projects. If you're going to do a special, you want to leave

0:09:13 > 0:09:19long enough to remember it fondly, and people wanted to come back. If

0:09:19 > 0:09:24we had only waited five years, people would be saying, not that lot

0:09:24 > 0:09:29again.What have you made of the reaction? It's been genuinely

0:09:29 > 0:09:35moving. It was overwhelming. It was trending worldwide last night. An

0:09:35 > 0:09:39incredible response that is really touching. It means a great deal to a

0:09:39 > 0:09:44lot of people. You get stopped in the street by a lot of people. They

0:09:44 > 0:09:49say they loved it as a kid. You stop and say what? They have grown up

0:09:49 > 0:09:55with it.Was it about pleasing those loyal fans or about attracting a new

0:09:55 > 0:10:02audience?Mainly we did it for ourselves. We've got to be happy. We

0:10:02 > 0:10:06did it for the fans. You've got to have one eye looking forward and one

0:10:06 > 0:10:12eye looking back.Like most of the characters!We wanted references

0:10:12 > 0:10:16that people who have followed it would understand but hopefully make

0:10:16 > 0:10:20it available to a new generation. Once you have tipped your noses up

0:10:20 > 0:10:25and got back into the gear, did it all come flooding back?It was like

0:10:25 > 0:10:30we had never stop. That is the definition of all great friendships,

0:10:30 > 0:10:38you pick up where you left off. Filming, I thought it would take a

0:10:38 > 0:10:43couple of days but it was like we had never stopped. It was quite

0:10:43 > 0:10:47strange. I hadn't watched it since, I watched the first two series to

0:10:47 > 0:10:53remember how the voices were. What did you make of your early work?I

0:10:53 > 0:10:59used to get cross with people who said it was too dark. Then I

0:10:59 > 0:11:06thought, well,... But it's nothing to do with Gothic horror. The stuff

0:11:06 > 0:11:12that is really dark is the themes. It's quite bleak but that is what

0:11:12 > 0:11:20people respond to.Is it darker now? I think people's eyes have just got

0:11:20 > 0:11:25more cloudy.Compared to what's going on in the news it's

0:11:25 > 0:11:33light-hearted.And you're going on tour?Yes tickets go on sale

0:11:33 > 0:11:37tomorrow.We started as a live act and we have done two tours and

0:11:37 > 0:11:42people have so much fun with it, jutting up, get in early and get

0:11:42 > 0:11:46your tickets. As a father of a teenage girl, I know how hard it is

0:11:46 > 0:11:53to get tickets for big shows. You've gone to great success. Were there

0:11:53 > 0:12:00any hesitations or reservations? Some of the sequences. That train

0:12:00 > 0:12:05sequence last night. We can't go into details on a family show. Did

0:12:05 > 0:12:11you think, hang on a minute? Was there any hesitation at all?No. We

0:12:11 > 0:12:17were doing it for fun and not because we had to. If you overthink

0:12:17 > 0:12:21what people are expecting, we just did it for a laugh. We had to be

0:12:21 > 0:12:25true to what the show was like before and also what our sense of

0:12:25 > 0:12:30humour is. The world has changed and certainly things you might rethink

0:12:30 > 0:12:35now but largely it is a very black comedy so we had to go with our

0:12:35 > 0:12:41instincts.Well, you looked great.

0:12:41 > 0:12:43The League of Gentlemen continues tonight and tomorrow night

0:12:43 > 0:12:47on BBC Two at ten and you can catch last night's episode on the iPlayer.

0:12:47 > 0:12:50Watch it, if you are old enough!

0:12:50 > 0:12:53If you've not posted your Christmas cards or presents yet, in a moment,

0:12:53 > 0:12:55our posties in tonight's audience have some important

0:12:55 > 0:12:56information for you.

0:12:56 > 0:12:59Before that, here's Adebanji finding out about the artist who 50 years

0:12:59 > 0:13:03ago received a royal stamp of approval.

0:13:03 > 0:13:10This is probably the most famous portrait ever created. It's an image

0:13:10 > 0:13:16that has travelled all over the world and endured for more than 50

0:13:16 > 0:13:25years. I'm talking about one of these, the British postage stamp. In

0:13:25 > 0:13:281965, the Royal Mail held a competition to find a new design for

0:13:28 > 0:13:34the stamp. Which, at the time, was based on an image by society

0:13:34 > 0:13:41photographer Dorothy welding. Arnold may chain, a sculptor from Stoke on

0:13:41 > 0:13:48Trent submitted his ideas. He had previously worked for Royal Mint and

0:13:48 > 0:13:52Wedgwood pottery is. He was the only want to submit a sculpture of the

0:13:52 > 0:13:57Queen. The judges told him to develop his ideas which he chose to

0:13:57 > 0:14:07do in the form of a plaster model. His nephew Dominic Newton remembers

0:14:07 > 0:14:15his uncle's passion.This was ten years work encapsulating. He

0:14:15 > 0:14:19produced about 300 drawings. We only have a view life drawings because he

0:14:19 > 0:14:24had very little time with the Queen but in terms of the paintings, we

0:14:24 > 0:14:31know for sure about 500.Tell me about the life drawings. I am an

0:14:31 > 0:14:38ardent sketch of myself and these are terrific. He only had four

0:14:38 > 0:14:41sittings throughout the entire period and eight each sitting would

0:14:41 > 0:14:48be 45 minutes. For him, hair was hugely important. This was very

0:14:48 > 0:14:55close to the final one.You can see early on in the project, the class

0:14:55 > 0:15:01and beauty of the piece that Arnold was all webby thinking about -- was

0:15:01 > 0:15:09already thinking about it being an injuring image.Can I have one?No.

0:15:09 > 0:15:18We only bring them out for special occasions!

0:15:18 > 0:15:21Was he nervous about meeting the Queen? He phoned up the people he

0:15:21 > 0:15:27need to phone up, and he was told that the Queen was on holiday in

0:15:27 > 0:15:31Balmoral. But they told him to come up, and bring a dinner jacket. He

0:15:31 > 0:15:35was ready to get to work, and the Queen turned up in her curlers, so

0:15:35 > 0:15:41only said it was just like being at the family, very relaxing. After

0:15:41 > 0:15:47years of hardware, he only received £150 for his finished design. Once

0:15:47 > 0:15:50it had received personal approval from the Queen, the first stamp with

0:15:50 > 0:15:57his design was released in 1957 with a value of four old pence. Since

0:15:57 > 0:16:03then it has been reproduced in over 130 different colours, and today I'm

0:16:03 > 0:16:07going to be using 2500 of these stamps to create a very special

0:16:07 > 0:16:14collards. It's going to be a bit of a challenge, so I've called in some

0:16:14 > 0:16:26posties to help me. We are in the very room where he created his

0:16:26 > 0:16:43designs for the stamp. I think I've got a lot to live up to.

0:16:47 > 0:17:00It is looking really good, really good. That looks absolutely

0:17:00 > 0:17:07fabulous.And what would your uncle think of it?He would think it was

0:17:07 > 0:17:11wonderful.And there we have it, a Machin stamp to celebrate his

0:17:11 > 0:17:17birthday. We all thoroughly enjoyed that, that was news to all of us!

0:17:17 > 0:17:24Right, the posties are in for an important Christmas post alert!

0:17:24 > 0:17:32The last day you can post anything is Saturday.

0:17:32 > 0:17:36Dave, when should people be posting their second class post?

0:17:36 > 0:17:49Tomorrow.And first-class?Thursday, the 21st of December.And if you

0:17:49 > 0:17:55miss that, there is one to guarantee, and what is that?Friday,

0:17:55 > 0:17:59that is the guaranteed special, the 22nd of December.And if you haven't

0:17:59 > 0:18:10posted it by then, do you really care? That is 1

0:18:10 > 0:18:12Angela has news of a Christmas card that won't be

0:18:12 > 0:18:14being posted this year.

0:18:14 > 0:18:17Unless you can find an envelope 200 million times smaller than a stamp!

0:18:17 > 0:18:19Here's the world's smallest Christmas card, created by boffins

0:18:19 > 0:18:22from the National Physical Laboratory.

0:18:22 > 0:18:29it is thinner than a human hair, and ten times smaller than the previous

0:18:29 > 0:18:40record-holder. The message was carved using a focused iron beam.

0:18:40 > 0:18:45What was the picture, was it a little snowman?I thought it was a

0:18:45 > 0:18:49gingerbread man.We all need one of those beams!

0:18:49 > 0:18:51When a pop star turned his bestselling children's book

0:18:51 > 0:18:54into a brand new Christmas musical, he need to find a whole

0:18:54 > 0:18:55new star to front it.

0:18:55 > 0:18:56And he found three.

0:18:56 > 0:19:00Here's Lucy.

0:19:00 > 0:19:04This Christmas, eight-year-old Dan is aiming to fulfil his dream of

0:19:04 > 0:19:09becoming a star of the London stage. The One Show has been given

0:19:09 > 0:19:12exclusive access to some very special editions for a brand-new

0:19:12 > 0:19:21Christmas show. The Christmasaurus is written by McFly Singer Tom

0:19:21 > 0:19:27Fletcher.The Christmasaurus has a Christmas Eve with a dinosaur, and

0:19:27 > 0:19:32William the character is a young wheelchair user.Christmas being

0:19:32 > 0:19:36over isn't the reason I'm feeling rotten.Today is an important day

0:19:36 > 0:19:40because we are casting William, and we always want to cast a genuine

0:19:40 > 0:19:44wheelchair user to give the character authenticity.I believe

0:19:44 > 0:19:50you can fly! There is nothing that we can't do with an actor who is a

0:19:50 > 0:19:53wheelchair user as long as you make sure instead of steps you build

0:19:53 > 0:19:56ramps.The character William has to use a wheelchair following a

0:19:56 > 0:20:00horrible accident when he was younger, in which he also lost his

0:20:00 > 0:20:07mum.Wiliame is worried that his dad is lonely and his life, is his life

0:20:07 > 0:20:19with just William enough?This is going to be incredibly difficult!I

0:20:19 > 0:20:24really like him, he is a real character, really confident.I am

0:20:24 > 0:20:28going to take this one away. No one is fighting the? Good. The team

0:20:28 > 0:20:33decided to offer three boys the chance to play the part of William.

0:20:33 > 0:20:37So Tom does a mad dash around to tell them. They have no idea I'm

0:20:37 > 0:20:41coming and that they have got the part of.Jake from Essex, Archie

0:20:41 > 0:20:50from Surrey and in Cambridgeshire... It is Paul Fletcher!I've got some

0:20:50 > 0:21:00news. Would you like to come and be William?Yes! Yes! Yes!When Dan saw

0:21:00 > 0:21:03Tom he was so surprised, he dropped to the floor with shock, and he was

0:21:03 > 0:21:08just over the moon.I never thought I would get it, because I knew I was

0:21:08 > 0:21:14probably not the best, but I gave it a go, and I got it.Dan has a rare

0:21:14 > 0:21:17form of muscular dystrophy, diagnosed when he was two. He can

0:21:17 > 0:21:23walk a little with help, but mainly uses an electric wheelchair. He does

0:21:23 > 0:21:27go to a mainstream school, and from an academic point of view is doing

0:21:27 > 0:21:33really super well, so his challenges are physical. He is very different,

0:21:33 > 0:21:39it is hard, but he puts on a brave face.A keen football fan, Dan also

0:21:39 > 0:21:47has a passion for music.Dan loves singing. He doesn't stop.And he had

0:21:47 > 0:21:50read the Christmasaurus and loved the book, and the fact that it has

0:21:50 > 0:21:53got a boy in a wheelchair in it that he could relate to.The thing I'm

0:21:53 > 0:21:59most looking forward to doing is the singing, definitely. It's lovely.

0:21:59 > 0:22:03Tom is a great singer.Today we are at rehearsals. They are halfway

0:22:03 > 0:22:06through a three-week schedule, and there is still a lot of work ahead

0:22:06 > 0:22:12for these guys.He can't run fast, he can't play with us, he just rolls

0:22:12 > 0:22:17on past.Sometimes they are concentrating, sometimes not, but

0:22:17 > 0:22:24these guys are incredible.A dinosaur in my bedroom!I think it

0:22:24 > 0:22:27is so important that we show kids that we are not all the same, and

0:22:27 > 0:22:33that is something to be embraced. Opening night. What is the show

0:22:33 > 0:22:42going to be like?Incredible. Electrifying.Spectacular.

0:22:42 > 0:22:45Especially for us, here's a sneak preview of Dan's big number. There

0:22:45 > 0:22:55won't be a dry eye in the house. # All he has is me

0:22:55 > 0:23:03# ...When he comes on, we are going to be so proud. Even just thinking

0:23:03 > 0:23:07about it now, I can't wait. # Someone more than me...To know

0:23:07 > 0:23:13what he has had to overcome to get there, it will be such a wonderfully

0:23:13 > 0:23:27happy occasion for us. # Someone more than me...It's just

0:23:27 > 0:23:34the best experience I will ever have in my life. It's awesome.

0:23:38 > 0:23:43They are going to smash it. Well done to Archie, Dan and Jake!

0:24:05 > 0:24:10his last one? How does it rate?It is a beautiful story, very touching

0:24:10 > 0:24:17and funny script. Peter Capaldi's last one, Jodie Whittaker's first

0:24:17 > 0:24:23one, David Bradley is back as the first doctor, so it is like a new

0:24:23 > 0:24:28three doctors. The regeneration story is amazing. To be at the end

0:24:28 > 0:24:37of so many eras is fantastic. It is a bit like the League, we had a good

0:24:37 > 0:24:41time making it. I saw it last Tuesday without the end, some

0:24:41 > 0:24:45secrets have to be kept. But it is really great, and there wasn't a dry

0:24:45 > 0:24:51eye in the house, I have to say. And a lot of talk and noise when

0:24:51 > 0:24:54Jodie was announced as the successor, but surely she will be

0:24:54 > 0:25:00amazing?Sure she will, she is a brilliant choice. I have been

0:25:00 > 0:25:04lobbying for a female Doctor Who for a very long time, so it is well

0:25:04 > 0:25:08overdue, and she is a brilliant choice. It is very exciting to think

0:25:08 > 0:25:17where it might go next.
