0:00:20 > 0:00:25Welcome to the first One Show of week with Matt Baker. And Angela
0:00:25 > 0:00:30Scanlon. With Princess Eugenie and boyfriend Jack Brooksbank and
0:00:30 > 0:00:32announcing their engagement earlier today I went to meet them this
0:00:32 > 0:00:37afternoon which is why I am looking a bit smarter. There she is surely
0:00:37 > 0:00:40the incredible engagement ring, a beautiful sapphire. Find out more
0:00:40 > 0:00:49about that later on.This
0:00:52 > 0:00:53about that later on.This weekends, freezing temperatures brought snow
0:00:53 > 0:01:00and ice too much of the country and gave us the coldest night for almost
0:01:00 > 0:01:04two years, minus 13.5 Celsius in Dalwhinnie in the Scottish
0:01:04 > 0:01:13Highlands.
0:01:13 > 0:01:15Highlands.Our guests tonight have promised to help us put the wind of
0:01:15 > 0:01:21a misery to one side, to forget all about the cold, those chilly
0:01:21 > 0:01:25temperatures, they are in a play together and what is it called...It
0:01:25 > 0:01:35is called Frozen. Please welcome Saran Jones and Jason Watkins! How
0:01:35 > 0:01:43are we both, welcome to the programme.Jason you are used to
0:01:43 > 0:01:51knocking around these parts. On your bike. Huh yes, I did not come in my
0:01:51 > 0:01:59bike.I run the building. You came to rehearsals on the bike.I have
0:01:59 > 0:02:08got a road bike. But I do cycle into work.Let's talk about The National
0:02:08 > 0:02:14Television Awards, you are up for them tomorrow. She is up for an
0:02:14 > 0:02:19individual award. But I'm not. I don't know why that happened.
0:02:19 > 0:02:26Neither are we. Do you enjoy an evening like that?Because we are at
0:02:26 > 0:02:30rehearsals, then we shot off to come here, tomorrow, working in the
0:02:30 > 0:02:34morning, then running off, I don't even have my outfit yet. That is a
0:02:34 > 0:02:38big thing I need to do. I will do it when I arrive at the hotel to get
0:02:38 > 0:02:44ready and hopefully have something to wear! Hopefully. If not I will
0:02:44 > 0:02:53just go in this, it looks all right. What, just keep winning it?
0:02:53 > 0:02:55What, just keep winning it?If you're watching football this
0:02:55 > 0:02:59weekend you will no tributes were paid at Premier League matches this
0:02:59 > 0:03:04weekend to commemorate Cyrille Regis who died last week, a real
0:03:04 > 0:03:08trailblazer for Black football players. Several did so much to
0:03:08 > 0:03:15confront racism in his footballing career but there is still another
0:03:15 > 0:03:18prejudice in the game which another player is determined to tackle,
0:03:18 > 0:03:22Richie Anderson, with his own announcement. Right back my name is
0:03:22 > 0:03:27Richie Anderson and I love football. I love playing for my Sunday league
0:03:27 > 0:03:31team. I love competing and I love the banter with my team-mates. But I
0:03:31 > 0:03:36have got a secret iconography from them. It is time to tell my
0:03:36 > 0:03:39team-mates I am gay. To the best of my knowledge my team-mates are
0:03:39 > 0:03:43straight and have no idea I am gay. It's funny because in every other
0:03:43 > 0:03:47aspect of society I am out and proud. My friends and family know
0:03:47 > 0:03:53but as soon as I get on a football pitch it feels like to do. So why am
0:03:53 > 0:03:57I and other David Bolt keeping quiet? Last year kicked out received
0:03:57 > 0:04:04its highest number of reports of abuse across all levels of football.
0:04:04 > 0:04:11I often hear homophobic comments whilst I am playing and watching.
0:04:11 > 0:04:17Birmingham are an LGBT that play any gay league. So it is a safe
0:04:17 > 0:04:21environment for a gay footballers to enjoy the game. The last team I was
0:04:21 > 0:04:27in there were problems, one of my friends announced I was gay and then
0:04:27 > 0:04:32turned sour. A couple of weeks later I was at the team and I wondered why
0:04:32 > 0:04:40it changed because I was gay?You can be the first person dropped.
0:04:40 > 0:04:43There is something about football which has prevented progress in the
0:04:43 > 0:04:47same way we have seen elsewhere. How we get to that is a difficult
0:04:47 > 0:04:52question but what we have tried so far has not worked. That could also
0:04:52 > 0:04:55explain why there's not a single out gay footballer in the professional
0:04:55 > 0:05:03game. I have come to beat Paul Elliott who looks after the football
0:05:03 > 0:05:06Association's includes an advisory board. I hear homophobic bets on the
0:05:06 > 0:05:12pitch and I see referees not batting an eyelid. There are ongoing
0:05:12 > 0:05:14challenges and certainly around homophobia that is one we want to do
0:05:14 > 0:05:21more. The reporting is the key.How do I report?Reported to the referee
0:05:21 > 0:05:25and he has to put it in his statement. This is me just being
0:05:25 > 0:05:28honest with you, I just feel there is not enough they at the minute
0:05:28 > 0:05:32which says to me if I hear in homophobic comment, you speak to
0:05:32 > 0:05:39that person.Homophobia is to have the same level of importance as
0:05:39 > 0:05:42discrimination by virtue of your ethnicity. I think it is important
0:05:42 > 0:05:46and you have to report it.Before I commit to my team-mates I want to
0:05:46 > 0:05:52know what to expect. My friend Neil is also gay and he is owed to the
0:05:52 > 0:05:56Sunday league team he manages. It will be difficult, it will not feel
0:05:56 > 0:05:59good leading up to it but be confident, be yourself, do not
0:05:59 > 0:06:05expect the massive reaction.Will it help on Sunday if I score a
0:06:05 > 0:06:09hat-trick?It will not do you a lot of favours if you miss a lot of
0:06:09 > 0:06:10chances.
0:06:14 > 0:06:20Its match day. At full-time I am coming out to the lads. My nerves
0:06:20 > 0:06:25calmed by getting on the scoresheet. The game ends in a morale boosting
0:06:25 > 0:06:347-2 victory for the team. Now I just have too find the right moment.
0:06:34 > 0:06:43So now... I'm just ready to do it now. Shall we just get it out the
0:06:43 > 0:06:47way? My team-mates know I am making a film about grassroots football but
0:06:47 > 0:06:54have no idea what I'm about to say.
0:06:54 > 0:06:59Boys, before you go I just want of a quick chat with you all, one of the
0:06:59 > 0:07:04big issues we have looked at this week, sorry, it's really close to my
0:07:04 > 0:07:12heart. It's homophobia in football. The reason why that means a lot to
0:07:12 > 0:07:18me is I am a gay footballer. So... I just wanted to be open and honest
0:07:18 > 0:07:24because with you lads, it's just been class. This is hard for me to
0:07:24 > 0:07:32do but I kind of felt like... APPLAUSE
0:07:40 > 0:07:47Seriously, thank you. That means a lot. There's going to be absolutely
0:07:47 > 0:07:51no difference whatsoever. Doesn't matter who you are, what colour,
0:07:51 > 0:07:56what race, what sexuality, you are a player for this team. That's it.It
0:07:56 > 0:08:00takes a lot of courage. You could see he was emotional. Fair play to
0:08:00 > 0:08:05him.Probably doesn't mean as much to us as it does to him so I am
0:08:05 > 0:08:08proud of him to be able to come out and say what he said and for the
0:08:08 > 0:08:15lads to be as supportive as they wear.So relieved. So relieved.
0:08:15 > 0:08:19Cannot even tell you. I expected it because they are a good bunch of
0:08:19 > 0:08:23lads and it probably helped that I scored but I am so relieved. I just
0:08:23 > 0:08:26hope people are watching this and they are in the same boat and are
0:08:26 > 0:08:32thinking you know what, I can do that as well.Brilliant. I think
0:08:32 > 0:08:41that deserves an applause. Thank you for letting us in on that moment. A
0:08:41 > 0:08:48week ago now, it must have been...? It was frightening and I am so
0:08:48 > 0:08:52humbled by their reaction. I was just saying, watching that back it's
0:08:52 > 0:08:56like watching somebody else because I was so nervous and so spaced out I
0:08:56 > 0:09:00felt like I was watching someone else do it and when I did it, I was
0:09:00 > 0:09:05like, go on, whoever you are and it was me! It's been brilliant sense,
0:09:05 > 0:09:09we have a group chat which is mainly used spitting excuses for not
0:09:09 > 0:09:12turning up to training but they have flooded with support. I am so
0:09:12 > 0:09:18humbled with how they have reacted. It must have felt very different to
0:09:18 > 0:09:22how you thought it might so did you go through what you wanted to say to
0:09:22 > 0:09:27your team-mates, did you practice? This is embarrassing, the night
0:09:27 > 0:09:31before at home with my other half I rearranged the living room, dragging
0:09:31 > 0:09:35these coaches across and we did it so it replicated the changing rooms
0:09:35 > 0:09:42and I make a big speech and he was thrilled as you can imagine. When I
0:09:42 > 0:09:48got into the shared the day after I went to jelly. I kept talking and
0:09:48 > 0:09:51waffling, and then he started clapping and it was like, oh my God.
0:09:51 > 0:09:55It just felt like such an amazing moment. I expected it because they
0:09:55 > 0:10:00are such a lovely bunch. You are out and proud in all other areas of your
0:10:00 > 0:10:03life but this was the one place you did not feel until now comfortable
0:10:03 > 0:10:08doing it.I don't get why there is a feeling with football not being in
0:10:08 > 0:10:12line with the rest of society. I feel like if you do that with your
0:10:12 > 0:10:17friends or at the workplace nobody would bat an eyelid. So I don't know
0:10:17 > 0:10:22why I feel uneasy on the football pitch. There was a survey done by
0:10:22 > 0:10:26BBC Radio 5Live in 2016 and it said 8% of football fans would stop
0:10:26 > 0:10:32watching their team if a player came out as gay. That was 2016. You can
0:10:32 > 0:10:35understand why more people are not doing it when people have those
0:10:35 > 0:10:42attitude. How is that a thing? So what is the answer in your eyes?
0:10:42 > 0:10:46What level does it have to start changing? Are we talking the
0:10:46 > 0:10:52premiership, globally, grassroots? It starts at the top with the FA.
0:10:52 > 0:10:55They have done some incredible things like the rainbow laces
0:10:55 > 0:10:57campaign but I have played Sunday morning football for 20 years and
0:10:57 > 0:11:01before every match the referee comes in and says no racism, now running
0:11:01 > 0:11:09up to the referee, now squaring up, you will be sent off and find. But
0:11:09 > 0:11:12in homophobia, I have never heard a referee make any reference and I
0:11:12 > 0:11:15think that needs to come from the top. People need to know that if you
0:11:15 > 0:11:20say something even as a banter, which I hate, it is not banter, but
0:11:20 > 0:11:25if you say anything you should not be playing. That happens in
0:11:25 > 0:11:31professional grounds as well, racism is not tolerated, fans can be
0:11:31 > 0:11:34ejected for the growing for racism and I think, phobia should be
0:11:34 > 0:11:39treated equally. It is unpleasant for families to hear that language.
0:11:39 > 0:11:45Do you think it is looked at on that level? Do you think in football they
0:11:45 > 0:11:50are on the same level?I think any kind of abuse should not be
0:11:50 > 0:11:56tolerated football is such an amazing game. You are
0:11:56 > 0:12:03semiprofessional.I tried. I had a go. I was at Wrexham very briefly
0:12:03 > 0:12:08with Mark Hughes and I, we are the same age and I played against him at
0:12:08 > 0:12:13under 17, I don't know what happened to him...Are you surprised it is
0:12:13 > 0:12:20still an issue?Yeah, I think, it's a great opportunity in the
0:12:20 > 0:12:25professional game to take the lead. You can imagine people younger and
0:12:25 > 0:12:32you are so sort of, such, great personality and sometimes people who
0:12:32 > 0:12:36feel they cannot come out are suffering in silence however much
0:12:36 > 0:12:39they are loving the games. It's an expression may have and yet somehow
0:12:39 > 0:12:46they cannot fully express themselves.Richie thank you for
0:12:46 > 0:12:48allowing the cameras to come and share that important moment in your
0:12:48 > 0:12:56life.I am just glad they included the goal!LAUGHTER
0:12:56 > 0:13:01Another football great has passed away today, World Cup winner who was
0:13:01 > 0:13:06part of Sir Alf Ramsey's victorious England squad in 1966, former
0:13:06 > 0:13:10England captain and Blackpool great Jimmy Armfield has died at the age
0:13:10 > 0:13:16of 82.We'll be holding the FA Cup draw live on the next Monday. Soon
0:13:16 > 0:13:22we'll be talking to Suranne and Jason about their new play Frozen
0:13:22 > 0:13:27which features the disappearance of a young girl. To help prepare the
0:13:27 > 0:13:30cast worked closely with the organisation Missing People. They
0:13:30 > 0:13:34are the only charity in the UK dedicated to bringing missing
0:13:34 > 0:13:37children and adults back together with families. We spent the day with
0:13:37 > 0:13:42them.
0:13:42 > 0:13:47We are launching the publicity campaign which is vitally important
0:13:47 > 0:13:51for the family, if you have a lot one missing you want the world. And
0:13:51 > 0:13:59the world to show they care. There is not a typical day here at Missing
0:13:59 > 0:14:03People, we support families at any stage of someone being missing. It's
0:14:03 > 0:14:07a very particular type of loss we understand the experience, the
0:14:07 > 0:14:10uncertainty of having someone away, thinking about where they are and
0:14:10 > 0:14:13what has happened, when they make comeback and how long that might
0:14:13 > 0:14:19take.When we get the referral we look at what we can do for the
0:14:19 > 0:14:23person and we have different steps. That will be things like posters. We
0:14:23 > 0:14:26can then see what local media organisations we have connections
0:14:26 > 0:14:30with. We will then look at other printed media partners like the
0:14:30 > 0:14:35Daily Mirror and the big issue and we can go all the way up to the big
0:14:35 > 0:14:38digital billboards you see in railway stations along the side of
0:14:38 > 0:14:43the road. Anyone can help us and join the search. You can get your
0:14:43 > 0:14:47community engaged and a lot of families we work with tell us how
0:14:47 > 0:14:50important it is that we are here not just for the emotional support but
0:14:50 > 0:14:56the proactive doing something.
0:14:57 > 0:15:02The main three groups helplines are targeted for our adults away from
0:15:02 > 0:15:05home or thinking of leaving, children running away or thinking of
0:15:05 > 0:15:10love running away and families who have been left behind. For some
0:15:10 > 0:15:13people if they are thinking of leaving home or have had to leave
0:15:13 > 0:15:17home run away it might be a big thing and they may not have had a
0:15:17 > 0:15:21chance to even say out loud what has been happening and have a chance to
0:15:21 > 0:15:25talk to someone where they can be listened to, it can hopefully help
0:15:25 > 0:15:28them think through what they might want to do next.
0:15:32 > 0:15:36This is a special system that only the police can use so it has to be
0:15:36 > 0:15:40someone registered as a missing person. The text messages sent to
0:15:40 > 0:15:44their phone letting them know that our team is here so if someone
0:15:44 > 0:15:47chooses to respond they will get through to our 24-hour team.
0:15:47 > 0:15:53Everyone wants to know they are OK and they are safe.We can also help
0:15:53 > 0:15:57people by reconnecting them with family members, pass messages to
0:15:57 > 0:16:00family members and connect people on 3-way calls and it's just that sense
0:16:00 > 0:16:05of having someone else on the line who can support the process and help
0:16:05 > 0:16:07the person explain what is going on and on make sure both parties are
0:16:07 > 0:16:14OK. It can lead to some really positive re-connections.When I
0:16:14 > 0:16:18speak to people who have a child missing or have a family member
0:16:18 > 0:16:23missing, there are people I have in my life, it makes you understand how
0:16:23 > 0:16:27painful it is, that experience. That is why I work here because I
0:16:27 > 0:16:30recognise it's a very human issue having someone missing that you love
0:16:30 > 0:16:35when we all have families and we all love people. In means this
0:16:35 > 0:16:40experience could happen to anybody.
0:16:40 > 0:16:45That brings us onto the topic of your play Frozen and you have been
0:16:45 > 0:16:51working with the charity to prepare for this?Yes, my character has a
0:16:51 > 0:16:58missing daughter and within the first weeks of rehearsal we thought
0:16:58 > 0:17:01it was really important to involve charities like Missing People and
0:17:01 > 0:17:06what they did was introduced me to three parents and two of the mothers
0:17:06 > 0:17:09came to talk to us about their children who were still missing.
0:17:09 > 0:17:13It's entertainment and it's a play but actually when you are dealing
0:17:13 > 0:17:17with things like this I think it's really important to do your research
0:17:17 > 0:17:23in the correct way and it was brave of those women to come and talk to
0:17:23 > 0:17:26us about their experiences and how they feel and we also had a
0:17:26 > 0:17:32criminologist which takes us onto Jason's character. We find out what
0:17:32 > 0:17:37happened to my daughter throughout the play, which runs over 20 years.
0:17:37 > 0:17:43I get the opportunity to meet the person is perhaps responsible for my
0:17:43 > 0:17:49daughter going missing.
0:17:49 > 0:17:53There is a lot of mystery surrounding this and we don't want
0:17:53 > 0:17:59to go into the details, but Jason, what do you want to say about the
0:17:59 > 0:18:04perspective of your character? There is huge empathy for people with
0:18:04 > 0:18:11missing children. This has a strong theme of empathy and understanding.
0:18:11 > 0:18:16Suranne is right, you want to get into the reality and we have had
0:18:16 > 0:18:22success in television playing in trek Sting and complex characters.
0:18:22 > 0:18:27The more you reflect society and individuals in society accurately
0:18:27 > 0:18:32and with empathy, it makes things very special. Something about the
0:18:32 > 0:18:38live elements of watching incredibly complex, difficult, challenging
0:18:38 > 0:18:44characters in difficult situations, makes theatre a special thing. One
0:18:44 > 0:18:51always looks for those characters in whatever medium and this play has a
0:18:51 > 0:18:56psychologist, a criminologist who comes to study my character. So,
0:18:56 > 0:19:01there is that element as well. We have been working with an expert
0:19:01 > 0:19:07criminologists.Let's have a little look at the most glossy trailer we
0:19:07 > 0:19:15have ever seen from a stage play. They say missing children often
0:19:15 > 0:19:18phone on their birthday. When she comes back, everything will be nice.
0:19:18 > 0:19:24The same. Familiar.
0:19:27 > 0:19:38The same. Familiar. Rhona, where are you? I know you are somewhere.
0:19:38 > 0:19:43you? I know you are somewhere.I tell you what. Gives me shivers.I
0:19:43 > 0:19:50was just saying, it is mainly monologue, and there is a lot of
0:19:50 > 0:19:58monologues as the trailer suggests. They are quite singular stories. I
0:19:58 > 0:20:03haven't been rehearsing with Jason and I don't know if he is any good.
0:20:03 > 0:20:11I will hopefully find out.
0:20:11 > 0:20:14I will hopefully find out. You looked really good on the trailer.I
0:20:14 > 0:20:24am better on the screen. You are friends? Yes, Vicky is responsible
0:20:24 > 0:20:34for giving away a big secret. I was very good at handstands.
0:20:34 > 0:20:41Extraordinary at handstands. He has been trying to teach me how to do
0:20:41 > 0:20:49cartwheels.What is your record with handstands? You mean in in terms of
0:20:49 > 0:20:55distance? I used to run the length of a basketball court when I was
0:20:55 > 0:20:59about 14 and I got close to the world record for running on my
0:20:59 > 0:21:06hands. Clearly, cannot do that now. I have slipped a disc, otherwise
0:21:06 > 0:21:13would have helped too. Feel free to do one, if you fancy it, it is
0:21:13 > 0:21:17entirely up to yourself.I will do one, if you want me to. But I would
