0:00:19 > 0:00:24Hello and welcome to The One Show with Alex Jones. And my co-host, Ade
0:00:24 > 0:00:29Adepitan. Now, with us are group of people who certainly know how to
0:00:29 > 0:00:39hold a tune, isn't that right? # yes!And you are all excited about
0:00:39 > 0:00:46tonight's guest. # yes!Let's get on with it.Joining
0:00:46 > 0:00:54us tonight is one of the hottest music acts around. She is the winner
0:00:54 > 0:01:03of the BBC Sound of 2018, Sigrid will be performing for us later. And
0:01:03 > 0:01:06a man who has admitted he knows nothing about singing, despite being
0:01:06 > 0:01:11the host of the new BBC singing show altogether now.
0:01:11 > 0:01:24# Rob Beckett! Wow! I might hire this lovely choir
0:01:24 > 0:01:30for when I answer the phone.
0:01:30 > 0:01:33for when I answer the phone. So your new show is all about group singing.
0:01:33 > 0:01:37We will talk about that later. But you were the first to admit you are
0:01:37 > 0:01:44tuneless. So how did you get the gig?I don't know! I wasn't going to
0:01:44 > 0:01:53say no, what I? To be fair, my job involves hosting. There are 100
0:01:53 > 0:01:56judges on this show. They watch a performer and if they like them,
0:01:56 > 0:02:00they stand up and join in and they give their opinions. There are
0:02:00 > 0:02:04enough opinions on the show from people who understand music. The 100
0:02:04 > 0:02:10is made up of musical people.We will talk about it later.Sorry! I
0:02:10 > 0:02:19went into early. We have other things to get in about fly-tipping.
0:02:19 > 0:02:25You have a newborn.Four weeks old. Are you getting enough sleep and are
0:02:25 > 0:02:28you going to be awake to watch the show tomorrow?I'm not getting
0:02:28 > 0:02:33enough sleep, but my wife is getting even less. We had an argument in the
0:02:33 > 0:02:39shops last week. It's not a competition as to who is most tired.
0:02:39 > 0:02:46We are tired in different ways. I said we are not arguing about this.
0:02:46 > 0:02:50She said, I know we are not having a competition, but if we were, I would
0:02:50 > 0:02:55win! And she is right. I will probably be asleep by the time the
0:02:55 > 0:03:00show goes on.We start tonight with a bit of bridge building. One to
0:03:00 > 0:03:03file under never going to happen is the bridge under the Channel -- the
0:03:03 > 0:03:07bridge over the ship Channel fours Johnson suggested in his recent
0:03:07 > 0:03:12visit.But it has led to proposals for a crossing between Northern
0:03:12 > 0:03:19Ireland and Scotland. Could it work? At the moment, if you want to get
0:03:19 > 0:03:24from Northern Ireland to Scotland, you have two options. Fly or sale.
0:03:24 > 0:03:29What if there was a third way? What if you could drive? The two
0:03:29 > 0:03:32countries are just 13 miles apart at their narrowest point, well within
0:03:32 > 0:03:36the scope of some of the super bridge is already in use around the
0:03:36 > 0:03:40world. It could cost 15 billion, but the party backing it does seem to
0:03:40 > 0:03:47have a knack for fundraising at the moment. We believe in a link between
0:03:47 > 0:03:50Northern Ireland and Scotland not only to bring us closer together,
0:03:50 > 0:03:54but it would revolutionise our tourism industry. It would boost
0:03:54 > 0:03:58trade between Northern Ireland and the whole island of Ireland and
0:03:58 > 0:04:05Scotland and the whole of Great Britain. So it is creating this
0:04:05 > 0:04:10Celtic connection physically possible? This architect says it is.
0:04:10 > 0:04:15There are two possible
0:04:16 > 0:04:19There are two possible options here, from Belfast or Antrim. But there is
0:04:19 > 0:04:22a problem lurking in the deep. At the bottom of the Irish Sea runs a
0:04:22 > 0:04:28300 metre deep, 50 kilometre long trench that is full of unexploded
0:04:28 > 0:04:33munitions from World War II.We now have the technology, based upon a
0:04:33 > 0:04:38prototype developed in Norway, for floating bridges. It would be
0:04:38 > 0:04:42constructed like an oil rig. There would be a top to it which would be
0:04:42 > 0:04:45an island, but it would be attached to the base of the sea through
0:04:45 > 0:04:51cables.Many architects and economists have said it is just not
0:04:51 > 0:04:55financially feasible, but I guess the question ultimately lies with
0:04:55 > 0:04:59the people who live on both sides of this stretch of water. Do they
0:04:59 > 0:05:05actually want a concrete Celtic connection? As I arrive in the port,
0:05:05 > 0:05:09a possible starting point for the bridge, I'm surprised to find people
0:05:09 > 0:05:14sounding cautiously optimistic.It's a brilliant idea. The ferry
0:05:14 > 0:05:17companies have fleeced the people of Northern Ireland for years. I find
0:05:17 > 0:05:24it extortionate.Boris Johnson wants his bridge to France. We should have
0:05:24 > 0:05:29a smaller bridge.In theory, it sounds brilliant. In practice, I
0:05:29 > 0:05:35don't think it will happen. The next morning, I had over the Irish Sea to
0:05:35 > 0:05:39see what people in the Scottish town of Stranraer think of it.I think
0:05:39 > 0:05:45it's fantastic. If you were able to drive to Northern Ireland, I would
0:05:45 > 0:05:49go at the weekend and not think twice about it.Where is the money
0:05:49 > 0:05:54coming from? How are you going to fund it?How would you respond to
0:05:54 > 0:05:59the critics who say this is a gargantuan waste of money?I would
0:05:59 > 0:06:05say that other nations are looking at it and have delivered even more
0:06:05 > 0:06:08ambitious infrastructure projects. It would revolutionise business and
0:06:08 > 0:06:13tourism. It would provide a boost for the whole country. It would be
0:06:13 > 0:06:19worth it in the long one. I think it would be more accessible.Worth
0:06:19 > 0:06:24every penny? Do you think it is important culturally to link
0:06:24 > 0:06:29Northern Ireland and Scotland? Absolutely. It is part of us. I feel
0:06:29 > 0:06:36a strong connection.Apart from a silly accent, I think the Scots and
0:06:36 > 0:06:41Irish are very similar minded.I am sure the ferry companies would say
0:06:41 > 0:06:49their pricing is competitive and fair.Smooth! Not clunky at all,
0:06:49 > 0:06:56Alex.Talking about bridges, Rob, we hear you are big fan of the Sydney
0:06:56 > 0:07:01Harbour Bridge.I wouldn't say I'm a big fan, but it is one of my
0:07:01 > 0:07:09favourites. I don't visit regularly. What was going on here?I am a bit
0:07:09 > 0:07:12sunburned, but was touring Australia and I went to Sydney on my own on
0:07:12 > 0:07:14the way back climbed up the bridge and thought I would ruin everyone
0:07:14 > 0:07:24else's photo. I am on tiptoes. That is the only way to climb it, in
0:07:24 > 0:07:28Cuban heels. You have no time to be climbing bridges. You are
0:07:28 > 0:07:35everywhere. You are in All Together Now, so you are becoming Mr Saturday
0:07:35 > 0:07:43night.I don't know about that. It has not even been on yet. Some
0:07:43 > 0:07:46comedians would shy away, because they would think, I don't know if I
0:07:46 > 0:07:54want to be that mainstream. But you are brilliant at it.On All Together
0:07:54 > 0:08:00Now, I do what I do at the gigs. If you had Frankie Boyle hosting it, it
0:08:00 > 0:08:05would be a very different show. I don't feel like I am changing who I
0:08:05 > 0:08:10am, so it fits perfectly. When the contestants things, I walk along and
0:08:10 > 0:08:14check the Luke chats to the judges and the singers. It is different to
0:08:14 > 0:08:18normal cultures because I get to mess about and take the mick a bit.
0:08:18 > 0:08:22It is not so serious that you can't have a laugh. I get to be a
0:08:22 > 0:08:29comedian, rather than just being a brilliant. How is it different from
0:08:29 > 0:08:32other singing shows?There are 100 judges rather than the traditional
0:08:32 > 0:08:37three or four, and they are all made up of professionals like choir
0:08:37 > 0:08:40leaders and tribute acts. And if they enjoy the singing, they stand
0:08:40 > 0:08:46up and sing along. If not, they stay seated. So it can be tense. You
0:08:46 > 0:08:51would be gutted if no one stands up. Exactly. We try and keep the
0:08:51 > 0:09:03aggression to a minimum.Sorry.It reminds me a bit of the Muppet show,
0:09:03 > 0:09:08in a good way. Also, you cover loads of genres. There was a bit of jazz,
0:09:08 > 0:09:13rock, opera. Tomorrow night, there was a contestant singing a Lionel
0:09:13 > 0:09:20Richie hit.You have to be good at singing to get away with that shirt
0:09:20 > 0:09:33combo. Are the 100 going to join in? # all night long, all night.
0:09:33 > 0:09:49# all night long! When you came out, I liked the way you were.
0:09:49 > 0:09:51I liked the way you were. This is like organising the most stressful
0:09:51 > 0:09:58hen do of all time. So you were having fun and. We
0:09:58 > 0:10:05present with Geri Horner. She leaves the 100. So she is getting up and
0:10:05 > 0:10:12singing along. So you her feedback as well as the rest. And there is no
0:10:12 > 0:10:18record Deal or career promise. It is £50,000 to the winner.I don't want
0:10:18 > 0:10:24to W in, but Geri Horner was not your favourite Spice Girl, was she?
0:10:24 > 0:10:29Well, she was, but at primary school, I had to dress up as a Spice
0:10:29 > 0:10:35Girl. I was in a covers band and I was Baby Spice because I am blonde.
0:10:35 > 0:10:40You can't lick Ginger spice of the kid with red hair. That was his
0:10:40 > 0:10:46role.No spoilers about your show, but you have been busy spoiling
0:10:46 > 0:10:54people's films on Twitter.I hadn't seen Titanic and then I saw your
0:10:54 > 0:10:59Twitter.I did pass muster on Dave, and then I did champion of
0:10:59 > 0:11:04champions.
0:11:04 > 0:11:08champions. Well done to whoever won it. But it had been on police. If
0:11:08 > 0:11:14you didn't watch, it is your fault. So I said well done and they said,
0:11:14 > 0:11:18you have ruined it! No, you have come to my Twitter and looked at
0:11:18 > 0:11:22what I said. I have not turned up in your front room and said Josh wins
0:11:22 > 0:11:28that. So I haven't ruined it. So then I went on a ruling streak.You
0:11:28 > 0:11:34have done all the big films, including Jaws.I tweeted, there was
0:11:34 > 0:11:44a big shot in the film. -- a big shark.Any spoilers, don't go to
0:11:44 > 0:11:50rob's Twitter. Altogether now is on tomorrow evening at 7:15pm on BBC
0:11:50 > 0:11:55One.In case you hadn't noticed, this month is being called
0:11:55 > 0:12:00Veganuary. It's a campaign to get people to join thousands who have
0:12:00 > 0:12:05already chosen a vegan lifestyle. Tony Singh has taken to the streets
0:12:05 > 0:12:08of his hometown to see what is on the menu when you take meat and
0:12:08 > 0:12:13dairy profit. Vegan this is on the rise. It is
0:12:13 > 0:12:16reckoned that there are now more than half a million people in the UK
0:12:16 > 0:12:21who have ditched meat, fish and dairy. Many believe it is less
0:12:21 > 0:12:25harmful for the environment. So what do the people of Edinburgh think
0:12:25 > 0:12:31about going vegan?I would make an attempt, but I don't think I would
0:12:31 > 0:12:36be very successful. I really like seafood.I was vegan for a month,
0:12:36 > 0:12:41not by choice, but I was working on a farm.Vegan is and is getting more
0:12:41 > 0:12:45popular amongst my friends at uni. I am one of the odd ones out because I
0:12:45 > 0:12:49do still eat meat. And the UK food industry is taking notice, with
0:12:49 > 0:12:52high-street chains such as Wetherspoon and Pizza Hut now
0:12:52 > 0:12:57offering vegan options. Even Ben & Jerry's offered their own dairy free
0:12:57 > 0:13:02range of ice cream. And it seems more and more people are thinking
0:13:02 > 0:13:07about adopting a meat and dairy free diet. So, I am heading to an
0:13:07 > 0:13:13Edinburgh institution that has recently gone vegan. Henderson's, a
0:13:13 > 0:13:17staple of the Scottish vegetarian dining scene since 1962, has
0:13:17 > 0:13:22recently changed one of its restaurants to 100% vegan. Even the
0:13:22 > 0:13:31upholstery is vegan. The difference we are trying to make is not to
0:13:31 > 0:13:35serve just replacements for meat and dairy products, but to make
0:13:35 > 0:13:40something that is different, that is original. What were the main changes
0:13:40 > 0:13:44you had to implement to make it vegan?First, we had to replace all
0:13:44 > 0:13:50of the dairy butter with vegetable spreads and 100% vegan wines. Why do
0:13:50 > 0:13:55you think vegan as is on the rise?I think people are starting to be more
0:13:55 > 0:14:01aware about the way we are living. Being vegan is an ethical and
0:14:01 > 0:14:03sustainable choice not only for animals, but also for the
0:14:03 > 0:14:09environment.Well, it looks amazing and smells amazing. Will it taste
0:14:09 > 0:14:16amazing?You have to try.First off, vegan chocolate brownie.The trick
0:14:16 > 0:14:20to the texts of the brownie is sweet potato. You would never tell. It's
0:14:20 > 0:14:33lovely.And here we have haggis. With vegetables and whiskey sauce.
0:14:33 > 0:14:39That is lovely. Since haggis is the national dish, why do we challenge
0:14:39 > 0:14:44some haggis it is to try my traditional haggis against your
0:14:44 > 0:14:49vegan version?Great.So it's off to Edinburgh's very own Murrayfield
0:14:49 > 0:14:54golf course for our One Show test. And our judges are four haggis
0:14:54 > 0:15:00living golfers, fresh from a round of 18 holes. Time to get to work. I
0:15:00 > 0:15:11will start by boiling the sheep's heart, lungs and liver. Meanwhile,
0:15:11 > 0:15:20our chef fries and and garam masala. My haggis is then put into a sheep
0:15:20 > 0:15:24stomach. Then it is boiled for a few hours while I get to work on a
0:15:24 > 0:15:30whiskey gravy. And to get that haggis texture, the chef adds kidney
0:15:30 > 0:15:36beans, shredded carrots and peanut oatmeal. That looks like haggis.
0:15:36 > 0:15:42Time to get the haggis out of the pan. And both are served the way
0:15:42 > 0:15:47they should be, with Scottish potatoes. Ready to eat. First, what
0:15:47 > 0:15:54do they make of the vegan haggis?
0:15:54 > 0:15:58The one on the left has a smoother texture. And how about the
0:15:58 > 0:16:02traditional one?The one on the right is fatter, it is more like
0:16:02 > 0:16:08what you would expect a meat haggis to be.So would they consider a
0:16:08 > 0:16:13vegan option in the future? It doesn't bother me where the food has
0:16:13 > 0:16:18got me to not as long as it is tasty. If you were at a Burns
0:16:18 > 0:16:24supper, which would you
0:16:24 > 0:16:25supper, which would you prefer? We will
0:16:25 > 0:16:32call it a draw! Of Aegon food looked delicious. Rob, you look like a
0:16:32 > 0:16:41meaty guy. What is your diet like?I try to be good, but you know what
0:16:41 > 0:16:45it's like. On the road, it's a nightmare, a lot of services. I am
0:16:45 > 0:16:51going all day but I end up having something awful services. You are
0:16:51 > 0:16:56wheat and gluten intolerant?I don't know, I am having a blood test next
0:16:56 > 0:17:01week, actually. You don't want to get bogged down in my admin! I don't
0:17:01 > 0:17:06think it is fully gluten, I don't want everyone on my back.We don't
0:17:06 > 0:17:17need to talk about that. But you are thinking about
0:17:17 > 0:17:21thinking about veganism?Yes, I'm thinking of doing it in steps, cut
0:17:21 > 0:17:26out the red meat, then the white meat, be vegetarian, and then become
0:17:26 > 0:17:34vegan.Well, we have some chefs, and they have made some of your
0:17:34 > 0:17:38favourite dishes, they are going to make a doner kebab, then a pepperoni
0:17:38 > 0:17:44pizza and some mac & cheese.
0:17:45 > 0:17:50pizza and some mac & cheese.Now, you
0:17:50 > 0:17:52you started What The Pitta if you years ago. How do you make doner
0:17:52 > 0:18:03kebab without any meat in it?We put various things in, we make a sauce
0:18:03 > 0:18:08and various vegetables. It sounds tasty, but I will be the judge of
0:18:08 > 0:18:26that.That is the most elegantly I have ever seen a kabaddi eaten!Now,
0:18:26 > 0:18:32Fabio, how do you make salami
0:18:33 > 0:18:41Fabio, how do you make salami that is vegan? We use set of herbs and
0:18:41 > 0:18:48spices are quite secret, and it is quite delicious, it has all the
0:18:48 > 0:18:54range of the cold cuts and the cheese that we do.Lets see if we
0:18:54 > 0:19:01will be visiting your restaurant. I've got some of your pizza here.
0:19:01 > 0:19:06That is really good. It is spicy! I wasn't prepared for that.Let's move
0:19:06 > 0:19:11on quickly.
0:19:12 > 0:19:20on quickly. Gavin, you are known as an avant-garde Vigo.
0:19:20 > 0:19:25an avant-garde Vigo. -- vegan. So what is in your vegan mac & cheese?
0:19:25 > 0:19:29To make it really creamy and cheesy, I have used cashew nuts, and lets
0:19:29 > 0:19:38them up. I have used nutritional yeast, it used to be of Aegon -- a
0:19:38 > 0:19:45vegan ingredient, but I have topped it with crispy coconut bacon as
0:19:45 > 0:19:52well.That is well sold.Get in there! That is good, considering I
0:19:52 > 0:19:56don't know anything that is in it! Thank you so much to the three of
0:19:56 > 0:19:58you.
0:19:58 > 0:19:59Shortly, the BBC's Sound of 2018 winner, Sigrid,
0:19:59 > 0:20:02will be serenading us with two and a half minutes of sublime
0:20:02 > 0:20:09Scandinavian singing.
0:20:09 > 0:20:15But before that, some heavy Yorkshire rock.
0:20:15 > 0:20:2140 years ago, this former cutlery factory in Sheffield featured one of
0:20:21 > 0:20:28the groups who went on to become one of the biggest rock bands in the
0:20:28 > 0:20:38world, Def Leppard. Pour Some Sugar On Me launched them, and they have
0:20:38 > 0:20:43now Solder hundred million records worldwide. We brought them back to
0:20:43 > 0:20:48where it all began. We spent most of our lives in here, playing, hanging
0:20:48 > 0:20:54out.The first gig we ever played was in this room, really. We had an
0:20:54 > 0:21:00invited audience.They were a rented crowd, all of our mates.We only had
0:21:00 > 0:21:07four or five songs, but we did it like a gig. It was brilliant fun.At
0:21:07 > 0:21:12the time, you just think, this is great. We are going to be huge.We
0:21:12 > 0:21:17could work in a place like this making cutlery, or we could work in
0:21:17 > 0:21:21a place making music, and it was kind of a no-brainer.Over the next
0:21:21 > 0:21:25few years, the band made three albums and gained a huge American
0:21:25 > 0:21:30audience. But back home in the UK, they remained relatively unknown. Is
0:21:30 > 0:21:33it odd for you being big in America and yet not really picking up so
0:21:33 > 0:21:38well here? The word apparently would have been big in our family.
0:21:38 > 0:21:42Apparently, they are quite big in America. But back in those days, if
0:21:42 > 0:21:46you were on telly, you must be famous, but we weren't on the telly
0:21:46 > 0:21:50or the radio in England, so it was just hearsay.Rather than sitting
0:21:50 > 0:21:54back on their stateside success, the band resolved to try to take their
0:21:54 > 0:21:59music to a wider audience.We didn't want to alienate ourselves from the
0:21:59 > 0:22:04heavy metal crowd that had been with us from the first day, it was just
0:22:04 > 0:22:08trying to bridge that gap of making an album that was kind of universal.
0:22:08 > 0:22:12But it meant a very slow start in the studio as the band began
0:22:12 > 0:22:18experimenting. Then progress was halted further when the drummer was
0:22:18 > 0:22:22involved in a terrible accident, severing one arm.Initially, your
0:22:22 > 0:22:31biggest concerns are whether he was going to live. We didn't really
0:22:31 > 0:22:35think about how he would continue. How do you deal with somebody
0:22:35 > 0:22:40telling you that your drummer has lost 50% of what he needs to do for
0:22:40 > 0:22:48a living? But Rick worked tirelessly to develop a new electronic drum
0:22:48 > 0:22:53kit.And he started playing, and we were like, wow.It gave us more of
0:22:53 > 0:22:58an identity on how we sound. The album finally came together, and was
0:22:58 > 0:23:03almost finished when their producer came across Joe strumming his
0:23:03 > 0:23:08acoustic guitar. And he was like, what is that, so I played it, and he
0:23:08 > 0:23:12said, that is the best song I have heard in five or ten years. And he
0:23:12 > 0:23:18said, we should do this.
0:23:18 > 0:23:31You know, the lyrics, with Pour Some Sugar On Me it has always been a
0:23:31 > 0:23:35metaphor for the mating ritual, it wasn't Bob Dylan, but phonetically
0:23:35 > 0:23:44was bang on.Iowa's heart back to Little Richard, he has this once on,
0:23:44 > 0:23:54the lyrics don't mean anything, but who cares? With the release of the
0:23:54 > 0:23:58song, the album Hysteria was finally released in 1987. It has sold 25
0:23:58 > 0:24:03million copies to date, and the success is largely due to that
0:24:03 > 0:24:09track. And today for the first time in 40 years, especially for The One
0:24:09 > 0:24:13Show, they are back in the old factory playing their signature
0:24:13 > 0:24:15song. # Love is like a bomb
0:24:15 > 0:24:17# Love is like a bomb #, and get it on
0:24:17 > 0:24:22# Living like a lover... It is such an audience participation
0:24:22 > 0:24:28song, very simple and less melodic, but it just had an impact. It is
0:24:28 > 0:24:33just a great vibe to do. # Pour some sugar on me
0:24:33 > 0:24:41# Pour your sugar on me... The crowd are louder than we are
0:24:41 > 0:24:45because there are 20,000 of them.
0:24:52 > 0:24:57Now, for fans of Def Leppard, they are on tour later this year. Rob, if
0:24:57 > 0:25:00you grow your hair, you could be part of them. You have got the
0:25:00 > 0:25:07style! You could be their son!Maybe I am. I have always been a big fan.
0:25:07 > 0:25:10We're joined by the BBC Music Sound of 2018 winner, Sigrid.
0:25:10 > 0:25:15APPLAUSE
0:25:15 > 0:25:19Def Leppard recorded their music in a cutlery factory, but you recorded
0:25:19 > 0:25:27yours somewhere far more a Dellit. Yes, I recorded back home in my
0:25:27 > 0:25:32hometown, that is pretty nice, isn't it?That is not bad. Is that the
0:25:32 > 0:25:40Northern lights in the background?I think it is just the son!It looks
0:25:40 > 0:25:48right.And congratulations.Thank you.
