0:00:16 > 0:00:25Well, to The One Show with Matt Baker. And Alex George. Whilst we

0:00:25 > 0:00:29deal with the beast from the east we have the perfect guest to cosy up

0:00:29 > 0:00:35tonight.The BAFTA winning actor and writer that everyone wants to work

0:00:35 > 0:00:43with, if this is anything to go by. What's up?I just want to say hello.

0:00:43 > 0:00:49I will work for you for free.I think I would be great for this job.

0:00:49 > 0:00:56I can make it easy for you, meet you at your local.I am right behind

0:00:56 > 0:01:02you, save me a seat.I want to pick myself up against the best I can

0:01:02 > 0:01:12find.I think what we are saying is...It's not a problem...Please

0:01:12 > 0:01:18welcome Sharon Horgan! CHEERING APPLAUSE

0:01:18 > 0:01:23That is such a weird mash up.What we saw were clips from some of the

0:01:23 > 0:01:29most popular shows you've done, Catastrophe, Divorce with Sarah

0:01:29 > 0:01:37Jessica Parker, an Anderson and the brilliant Motherland. They are

0:01:37 > 0:01:43collaborations so you must be the easiest person to write with.I am

0:01:43 > 0:01:47just grateful for help. It is much easier to write with someone else

0:01:47 > 0:01:53because it means you laugh and you know what is funny if somebody is

0:01:53 > 0:02:02laughing along. I am fairly easy. Have you dealt with the fact that

0:02:02 > 0:02:06people want to write with you and work with you and things are

0:02:06 > 0:02:12successful at the moment?No.Does it still feels strange?It does feel

0:02:12 > 0:02:19bonkers. I did not even start working in TV until I was in my 30s.

0:02:19 > 0:02:25That's good, in a way, because I am super grateful for it. It's weird

0:02:25 > 0:02:30seeing that, all those people. I should make sure with everyone

0:02:30 > 0:02:34together, it seems to work, you did a nice job.You could get all your

0:02:34 > 0:02:41favourite cast members back.Well unless you spent the last 24 hours

0:02:41 > 0:02:45in hibernation you will have noticed the Mercury has plummeted and it's

0:02:45 > 0:02:48all thanks to a blast of cold air from Siberia dubbed Beast from the

0:02:48 > 0:02:55East.This is what it was like when we arrived this afternoon. We had

0:02:55 > 0:02:59just been to the cinema watching your new movie which we will talk

0:02:59 > 0:03:03about but you don't often get scenes like that.It is like we were in New

0:03:03 > 0:03:13York!Yes, we are going outside... It is warmer now than it was a few

0:03:13 > 0:03:20hours ago. They say it is zero but feels like -20 five. What were you

0:03:20 > 0:03:26hoping for.

0:03:26 > 0:03:31hoping for.-7 up north at the moment.Temperatures are expected to

0:03:31 > 0:03:34be a lot colder overnight and tomorrow and as we've been finding

0:03:34 > 0:03:38out in Norfolk a lot has been done to keep people warm and safe as they

0:03:38 > 0:03:43prepare for the worst. First thing in the morning, rush

0:03:43 > 0:03:48hour and it is absolutely freezing. -3, feels like -7 with wind chill

0:03:48 > 0:03:53and a bit of snow on the ground. For the good people of Norwich it's time

0:03:53 > 0:03:58to get to work. Or not is the case may be. The so-called Beast from the

0:03:58 > 0:04:01East weather system created havoc for commuters before it arrived will

0:04:01 > 0:04:07stop on Sunday Greater Anglia trains postponed and cancelled well before

0:04:07 > 0:04:12flake of snow had the tracks. I'm wondering where you are trying to

0:04:12 > 0:04:21get to?Barcelona.Let me check the departures...They are running

0:04:21 > 0:04:27hourly.That's a bit nervous, trains running hourly when you're trying to

0:04:27 > 0:04:33get a flight, will it work out for you?I hope so.My daughters school

0:04:33 > 0:04:37is closed and they only let me know ten hours before it started so I

0:04:37 > 0:04:44have call friends.That's not good enough.No, it's just a bit of snow.

0:04:44 > 0:04:51Your train is running?It is and I am pleased. I'm meeting a friend, we

0:04:51 > 0:04:57planned this trip for a long time. What are you doing?I could not

0:04:57 > 0:05:02possibly say. I will not be back until Friday. This bitterly cold

0:05:02 > 0:05:05weather is not just for a problem trying to get around, when the

0:05:05 > 0:05:08temperature plummets it's the vulnerable and elderly who are most

0:05:08 > 0:05:13at risk even in their own homes. Community nurse Claire has to battle

0:05:13 > 0:05:17the cold weather as she goes on around checking her patients. How

0:05:17 > 0:05:25tricky it is the cold weather for some of the people you are seeing?

0:05:25 > 0:05:30Very burnable patients, it's important to prioritise and see

0:05:30 > 0:05:34patients who have specific needs such as injections, maybe insulin.

0:05:34 > 0:05:38It's important they get that injection. So some you cannot fail

0:05:38 > 0:05:45to get to?That's right.What are your key considerations?Keeping

0:05:45 > 0:05:49them safe and warm and comfortable, knowing they have helped if they

0:05:49 > 0:05:56need it.Today she's checking on Eileen.I am going to change leg of

0:05:56 > 0:06:01that is OK? Ginger bandage. How important is it that the nurse comes

0:06:01 > 0:06:09to see you?Very important, I've not been outside for tonight years.That

0:06:09 > 0:06:16long? And that is because of mobility issues?Yes.What advice do

0:06:16 > 0:06:23you give about hot weather? -- cold weather?Hot food and keep active to

0:06:23 > 0:06:27try to get the blood flowing. It's important we come today because of

0:06:27 > 0:06:33the bandages are not in place you risk open wounds getting infected.

0:06:33 > 0:06:37It's showing good signs of healing. You are on the mend. You're on the

0:06:37 > 0:06:45mend.I'm on the mend!The north-east and Home Counties have

0:06:45 > 0:06:48been some of the worst affected areas seeing as much as ten

0:06:48 > 0:06:53centimetres of snow fall. On the roads traffic was at a standstill on

0:06:53 > 0:06:58the 20 in Kent. Tomorrow it could be worse.

0:06:58 > 0:07:03Could be worse but Ben Rich is here to confirm, there has been a lot of

0:07:03 > 0:07:12hype about this, is it that bad?I think it is. I think it has lived up

0:07:12 > 0:07:16to the hype. Temperatures struggling to get above freezing during the

0:07:16 > 0:07:20day, wind chill and this is widespread across the whole country,

0:07:20 > 0:07:24not just parts of Scotland are Eastern areas, everywhere is cold

0:07:24 > 0:07:27and just about everywhere by the end of the week will have seen snow as

0:07:27 > 0:07:32well.We are used to subzero temperatures here but the air and

0:07:32 > 0:07:39the cold, I feel Zagadou from kind? I think that's because of it has

0:07:39 > 0:07:43come from, we have heard more times than you can shake a stick at, Beast

0:07:43 > 0:07:51from the East. That is the air coming from Siberia which is dry, it

0:07:51 > 0:07:56is land so air from there will not be moist, it will be dry. One of the

0:07:56 > 0:07:59things you might have noticed as you not needed to scrape your car not

0:07:59 > 0:08:03because it's not been called it's just the air has not been moist

0:08:03 > 0:08:11enough.This is all news to me. I did not know it was even snowing. I

0:08:11 > 0:08:22think you just want this.You think I want this to happen?Fake news.On

0:08:22 > 0:08:27the weather maps, you say it is too dry for ice and snow but on the

0:08:27 > 0:08:31maps, it should tomorrow and Thursday that all this white stuff

0:08:31 > 0:08:37is spreading, is that snow?Yes,

0:08:37 > 0:08:38Thursday that all this white stuff is spreading, is that snow?Yes,

0:08:38 > 0:08:48that is snow.

0:08:49 > 0:08:55We might have thunder snow. That is even better than Beast from the

0:08:55 > 0:09:10East!That will be in your next show wanted? No.This is from Devon.

0:09:10 > 0:09:17wanted?No.This is from Devon.This is a postcard.No it isn't. You

0:09:17 > 0:09:25wanted thunder snow? This is that big cloud waiting to drop a whole

0:09:25 > 0:09:29load on us tomorrow?Yes, there could be blazers in the south

0:09:29 > 0:09:38tomorrow. -- buzzers. As the area of low pressure, called storm MR. As it

0:09:38 > 0:09:43runs on to the cold air parts

0:09:49 > 0:09:54if we are going to go for it we might as well have a blizzard.I

0:09:54 > 0:10:03wondered why the Portuguese called it Emma? .Thank you to everyone who

0:10:03 > 0:10:09sent in videos and postcards, keep them coming in.If you want

0:10:09 > 0:10:09sent in videos and postcards, keep them coming in.If you want to help

0:10:09 > 0:10:12take the temperature of the nation we are looking for a short weather

0:10:12 > 0:10:18report from your area so get your telephone, hold it like a landscape

0:10:18 > 0:10:21and send us a quick video telling us what the weather is like in your

0:10:21 > 0:10:25area, how it is affecting you or how it is not affecting you, include the

0:10:25 > 0:10:25area, how it is affecting you or how it is not affecting you, include the

0:10:25 > 0:10:29temperature if you can and we will show some tomorrow.Thank you, I

0:10:29 > 0:10:35like how you held it like that. Good.Sharon's new film is called

0:10:35 > 0:10:40Game Night, it's all about a group of friends getting together to play

0:10:40 > 0:10:45board games. At least that's how things start.They are not

0:10:45 > 0:10:48everyone's idea of fun apparently but whatever you do do not see that

0:10:48 > 0:10:54these guys. We love board games so much we

0:10:54 > 0:11:01opened our own board game category. -- cafe. 10-15 years ago it was

0:11:01 > 0:11:04unheard of people would come and play board games but now it's the

0:11:04 > 0:11:09cool thing to do.We opened up the cafe so there would be a space for

0:11:09 > 0:11:14people to sit and relax and hang out with friends and play games. It's

0:11:14 > 0:11:18Friday evening, you can hear the buzz, people are arriving and

0:11:18 > 0:11:23laughing and it's not even 6pm.

0:11:23 > 0:11:31We will have 25-year-olds playing hungry hippos, we will have an

0:11:31 > 0:11:35elderly couple playing Scrabble. We'll have some heavyweight gamer

0:11:35 > 0:11:41geeks playing a five-hour game of strategy.We have a regular dungeon

0:11:41 > 0:11:44and Dragons nightwear people come. You open the door and walk down and

0:11:44 > 0:11:48suddenly a dark Lord standing there with a big axe, he wants to kill

0:11:48 > 0:11:56you, what do you do now? I roll six. They are lots of fun and I watch

0:11:56 > 0:11:59people playing games and connecting together and it sometimes has

0:11:59 > 0:12:08reduced me to tears and that is amazing.I set up a company to make

0:12:08 > 0:12:13people feel socially included in games nights. Everyone gets a sense

0:12:13 > 0:12:17of inclusion. Everyone gets a sense of accomplishment. I have suffered

0:12:17 > 0:12:22everything from depression to anxiety, it can be difficult to

0:12:22 > 0:12:25socialise or feel like you're part of a group or feel the same as

0:12:25 > 0:12:29everyone else. When I play board games and table top games there is

0:12:29 > 0:12:32an aspect of logical sense which puts people into roles without

0:12:32 > 0:12:38emotional needs. It's a lot easier to interact. And understand what is

0:12:38 > 0:12:43going on in the social situation. I held an event in Hackney, people

0:12:43 > 0:12:49came down and I offered pizza, drinks and the games themselves. I

0:12:49 > 0:12:53believe board games saved my life, they gave me a purpose and they give

0:12:53 > 0:12:58me meaning and understanding. I want to be able to give that to other

0:12:58 > 0:13:06people.I work in the British Museum and it's my good fortune to find out

0:13:06 > 0:13:10rules for an ancient board game which is the oldest game in the

0:13:10 > 0:13:14world we know how to play today. We know how to play it and we can

0:13:14 > 0:13:17imagine rather well the environment in which it was played because it

0:13:17 > 0:13:22was a race game. Two players, you had pieces and dice and you had to

0:13:22 > 0:13:26race around the board and get home before your opponent. The most

0:13:26 > 0:13:30important thing is about this whole subject, what we call games night,

0:13:30 > 0:13:36they exist and are important around the world but they are at the tail

0:13:36 > 0:13:39end of a whole long process of thousands of generations of people

0:13:39 > 0:13:47playing together. I think this phenomenon of using your daily

0:13:47 > 0:13:51preoccupations for a moment in this kind of arena is a very beneficial

0:13:51 > 0:13:57thing.Isn't that wonderful? They say the family that plays together

0:13:57 > 0:14:04stays together.I have never heard that one.But your new film Game

0:14:04 > 0:14:07Night is out on Friday and it's about couples getting together to

0:14:07 > 0:14:15play games but it's not just Monopoly and corridor, things

0:14:15 > 0:14:21progress to something more dramatic. Yes, if this were I tell you about

0:14:21 > 0:14:28the film?LAUGHTER Yes, they are friends who have games

0:14:28 > 0:14:31nights, the characters at the heart of it are played by Jason Bateman

0:14:31 > 0:14:37and Rachael McAdams, Jason Bateman's character is very competitive with

0:14:37 > 0:14:41Kyle Chandler who plays his brother. It's a murder mystery party but he's

0:14:41 > 0:14:45mixed up with shady folks and shady dealings. So the game night turns

0:14:45 > 0:14:52into a real-life murder mystery and hilarity ensues.Lets get a sense of

0:14:52 > 0:14:55it, here is your character explaining to her very odd neighbour

0:14:55 > 0:15:06how you got involved. How long have you two been a couple? We are not.

0:15:06 > 0:15:12We work together. I would not, I would not do that.I thought I

0:15:12 > 0:15:20detected a certain chemistry between the two of you.No. No way. No.I'm

0:15:20 > 0:15:29not the best judge of chemistry in the world.

0:15:37 > 0:15:40Because your wife left you.You didn't start working as you know it

0:15:40 > 0:15:45now until you were in your 30s. This is your first big Hollywood film.

0:15:45 > 0:15:52Yeah.How have you been comparing the two, the sitcom writing to being

0:15:52 > 0:16:02in Hollywood?There's better food! That is the only difference!You

0:16:02 > 0:16:06know, bigger budgets and more money and more toys to play with. But I

0:16:06 > 0:16:11mean it's the same kind of thing. We are all just trying to bring your

0:16:11 > 0:16:17script to the screen. Is it less stressful? You are so involved with

0:16:17 > 0:16:20the writing and editing normally and in it sometimes, this must have been

0:16:20 > 0:16:25like a holiday?Oh, yeah. It was really relaxing. Yeah. Just turning

0:16:25 > 0:16:29up and saying a few lines and then just going back to my trailer for a

0:16:29 > 0:16:35kip.No doubt writing while in your trailer?I was, actually. I had to

0:16:35 > 0:16:40find time to slot it in. We were about to start making Motherland. I

0:16:40 > 0:16:47was saying to Holly, I will be able to do it. I'll keep writing. We

0:16:47 > 0:16:51wrote on Skype two episodes of Motherland while I was there. You

0:16:51 > 0:16:57get so much time in your trailer. What else are you going to be doing?

0:16:57 > 0:17:01Knitting or reading. Is it something you would like to do more of. You

0:17:01 > 0:17:04are busy with writing. Would you like to put it to one side and do

0:17:04 > 0:17:09the writing?No. No, not really. I mean, it's fun acting. The reason I

0:17:09 > 0:17:14wanted to do it because I hadn't done any for a while. Apart from

0:17:14 > 0:17:17Catastrophe. Write something really hard work. It takes up a lot of

0:17:17 > 0:17:24time. Yeah, it's fun to go and play and just do a...It's a full on

0:17:24 > 0:17:29film. A lot of action.There is. I liked doing that, though.That's

0:17:29 > 0:17:34what you think about a Hollywood film, isn't it? A little bird told

0:17:34 > 0:17:42us that you are writing your own film.Oh, yeah. Me and Holly Walsh.

0:17:42 > 0:17:46Sharon Horgan tell us more.I can't. You are going to have. We're here

0:17:46 > 0:17:57now. What's the plot? What's the feel? Something?We pitched it as a

0:17:57 > 0:18:02comedy single, white female. A female buddy movie.Comedy?Yes,

0:18:02 > 0:18:10it's definitely a comedy.Two girls. Yes. I will not tell you what it's

0:18:10 > 0:18:13about. We are still writing it. We have written it, we need to make it

0:18:13 > 0:18:21better. I don't want to jinx it if I tell what you it's about is will

0:18:21 > 0:18:24sound rubbish and no-one will come on board. At the end do you drive

0:18:24 > 0:18:31over a cliff?Yeah.Games Night is on Friday. We had fun watching it.

0:18:31 > 0:18:34We did.

0:18:34 > 0:18:36Time now to catch up with Emma Massingdale on her journey

0:18:36 > 0:18:38through the Outer Hebrides.

0:18:38 > 0:18:40As a One Show regular, Emma's led her horses -

0:18:40 > 0:18:43Noah and Storm - through some of the most rugged and spectacular

0:18:43 > 0:18:44landscapes in the UK.

0:18:44 > 0:18:48Now, it's time to take them home.

0:18:48 > 0:18:53I'm on my fourth day travelling up through the Outer Hebrides with my

0:18:53 > 0:18:59dog Inca and my ponies, Noah and Storm. I've arrived on Eriskay where

0:18:59 > 0:19:05the breed got their name. This is literally heaven. Eriskay ponies

0:19:05 > 0:19:10were down to their last 20 in the 1970s, thanks to the work of

0:19:10 > 0:19:17dedicated local people their numbers are back up to around 420 worldwide.

0:19:17 > 0:19:23Donald's family have have lived on the island for generations and used

0:19:23 > 0:19:27them on their small holdings. Everyone would have had a pony at

0:19:27 > 0:19:34with you time. It was the vital part of working the croft. As demand

0:19:34 > 0:19:38fell, so did their numbers. Once again, they are an important part of

0:19:38 > 0:19:43island life.They are a tourist attraction. They are quite popular

0:19:43 > 0:19:47with the tourists and good for the island. This time of year, if you

0:19:47 > 0:19:51look around the place, it's nice and green. If there wasn't anything

0:19:51 > 0:19:56grazing on the island it wouldn't be that green. It would be overrun. As

0:19:56 > 0:20:02for my two ponies I have had to keep them separate from the wild herd as

0:20:02 > 0:20:06it can takes for them to be accepted. They are enjoying their

0:20:06 > 0:20:10home land. Noah and Storm are happy to roam free. Nice to see them

0:20:10 > 0:20:18getting to live like a true Eriskay pony. Eriskay is not just famous for

0:20:18 > 0:20:22its ponies their football pitch is recognised by Fifa as one of the

0:20:22 > 0:20:25most remarkable places to play in the world. The first thing you

0:20:25 > 0:20:31notice is that the pitch is... How they play on it, I don't know. On

0:20:31 > 0:20:37this corner it can go straight down hill. After a bumpy and wet game,

0:20:37 > 0:20:44Eriskay snatch a 4-3 win. At the island's only pub I join Martin and

0:20:44 > 0:20:48Sean for a drink. With such a small population on the island it can be

0:20:48 > 0:20:53tough to rustle up a team.A lot of phoning around a couple of nights

0:20:53 > 0:20:57before. We get there in the end. What do other teams make of your

0:20:57 > 0:21:03incredible pitch here? They moan a lot. You hear them moaning and

0:21:03 > 0:21:05groaning about it. The pitch has been there for 50, 60 years. It's

0:21:05 > 0:21:10unique.Although there are six main islands, the Outer Hebrides is made

0:21:10 > 0:21:15up of hundreds of little ones as well with most uninhabited I'm

0:21:15 > 0:21:20camping on one of them tonight. To get there we nighed to cross a tide

0:21:20 > 0:21:25al cross way, which is possible when the tide has gone out. Well, at the

0:21:25 > 0:21:29moment the road just runs into the sea. We have to wait four hours, but

0:21:29 > 0:21:36it's worthwhile. Out to sea we go. It shows just how brilliant these

0:21:36 > 0:21:41ponies are.

0:21:41 > 0:21:47ponies are. This is amazing. This tidele causeway is a mile-and-a-half

0:21:47 > 0:21:51long and allows the ponies to get up a bit of speed. Oh, my word. That

0:21:51 > 0:21:57was so much fun.

0:21:57 > 0:22:00was so much fun. The ponies are cantering along. The spray was going

0:22:00 > 0:22:06everywhere. Awesome. Our own companions on the island are

0:22:06 > 0:22:10highlands cows who seem pleased to have company. You guys are awesome.

0:22:10 > 0:22:16After I set up camp, the rain comes in again. One minutes it's sunny and

0:22:16 > 0:22:23nice. The next minute, pouring and rain. Literally deluge of waterfalls

0:22:23 > 0:22:27out of the sky. In the morning, the journey back across the causeway is

0:22:27 > 0:22:33horrendous. I'm absolutely soaked. Covered in sand and I really feel

0:22:33 > 0:22:41like I need a coffee and some hot breakfast.

0:22:41 > 0:22:45breakfast. The ponies are used to the climate. They have a swinging

0:22:45 > 0:22:50rock to tell them how bad the weather is. It's wet and windy,

0:22:50 > 0:22:55according to the rock. While I get warmed up, the po Ennis have to wait

0:22:55 > 0:23:02outside. Sorry, boys. This is just a pitstop as we still have plenty more

0:23:02 > 0:23:07miles to cover. The journey will get tougher as we head to the largest

0:23:07 > 0:23:12and most mountainous islands of Lewis and Harris I will get close to

0:23:12 > 0:23:19the fantastic wildlife that inhabits these islands. He got it! Thank you,

0:23:19 > 0:23:25Emma.

0:23:26 > 0:23:32WeWe have Jenga out. In honour of your filmThat little clip was

0:23:32 > 0:23:36textbook One be show.Of course. There is a catch. If you pull a

0:23:36 > 0:23:40block out and it has black on that will be a confession question. If

0:23:40 > 0:23:44it's red we will have more of a career based question.OK.Future

0:23:44 > 0:23:57and stuff.All right.That is a good one.Red.Sensible question.Serious

0:23:57 > 0:24:00one of Divorce starring Sarah Jessica Parker was a big hit.

0:24:00 > 0:24:06We understand it's back tonight. What can we expect?Oh, we do the

0:24:06 > 0:24:12post-divorce. There is signing the papers in the first episode. The

0:24:12 > 0:24:17first series was really, you know, tough kind of going. A lot of pain.

0:24:17 > 0:24:23This is them just trying to embark on lives outside of each other. They

0:24:23 > 0:24:27have kids and are still...Are you feeling nervous it starts tonight?

0:24:27 > 0:24:35No.You are happy?No, it's grand. 40 seconds.Sugar.Come on.Black.

0:24:35 > 0:24:42Confession.OK.Quick.What's the most expensive thing you've ever

0:24:42 > 0:24:49stolen?Like a bag of pick-n Halifax mix.A whole bag. Normal people do

0:24:49 > 0:24:59one or two!In my local supermarket you could fill up a bag of

0:24:59 > 0:25:03pick-n-mix...She's not the woman I They are basically thought.Saying -

0:25:03 > 0:25:10help yourself to kids.We are done. We are done.

0:25:11 > 0:25:14Finally tonight, a fierce argument is raging in Northern Ireland

0:25:14 > 0:25:15which has nothing to do with power-sharing or

0:25:15 > 0:25:17hard and soft borders.

0:25:17 > 0:25:19Andy Kershaw's been to find out more.

0:25:19 > 0:25:23This barge in Northern Ireland is extracting one of the most in demand

0:25:23 > 0:25:28natural resources on the planet. It's not oil and it's not gas, it's

0:25:28 > 0:25:35sand. Incredibly, after water, sand is the second most sought after

0:25:35 > 0:25:40commodity in the world. Now most of us probably don't give sand a second

0:25:40 > 0:25:45thought. When you move sand from a place like this, and take it

0:25:45 > 0:25:52somewhere else, then what damage does it leave behind? Every year in

0:25:52 > 0:25:58Britain around 16 million tonnes of it is dredged from under water. Here

0:25:58 > 0:26:02at lock anyway, Britain's biggest lake, annually 1.5 million tonnes of

0:26:02 > 0:26:08sand is excavated. It's also a specially protected site. As you can

0:26:08 > 0:26:14imagine, not everyone is a fan of sand dredging. In some parts of the

0:26:14 > 0:26:18country, the practice is highly controversial. Even more so here

0:26:18 > 0:26:24because it's happening without planning permission. Local

0:26:24 > 0:26:28fishermen, Martin Devlin, has been making a living from this lake for

0:26:28 > 0:26:31had more than 30 years.This area here is the area of contention.He

0:26:31 > 0:26:36invited me to hop in his fishing boat to get a closer look. We are

0:26:36 > 0:26:39surrounded by three dredgers. You can see the process in action. There

0:26:39 > 0:26:43is a huge pipe that goes down to the bed of the lake which is sucking

0:26:43 > 0:26:50Uptons of sand. They are encroaching in spawning ground and areas which

0:26:50 > 0:26:57are used by the small fish for shelter and for feeding. Those areas

0:26:57 > 0:27:01have been sacrosanct for us to generations. There are more

0:27:01 > 0:27:07stakeholders on lock anyway and that the sand dredgers. You think there

0:27:07 > 0:27:10should be co-ordination so sand dredging and fishing can happily

0:27:10 > 0:27:16co-exist?If we are to leave anything for the next generations of

0:27:16 > 0:27:22fishermen and sand dredgers we need to do something about it now.Gordon

0:27:22 > 0:27:26Best represents the sand traders. He believes dredging from the lake is

0:27:26 > 0:27:33vital.Virtually all the sand that is taken out

0:27:35 > 0:27:40is taken out of n out is used in the construction industry. Even the

0:27:40 > 0:27:51iconic Parliament Buildings behind me was built using sand. If the sand

0:27:51 > 0:27:54supply stopped tomorrow it would have a devastating effect on the

0:27:54 > 0:27:57Northern Ireland economy.The Northern Ireland Government

0:27:57 > 0:28:00announced the public inquiry into an application for planning permission

0:28:00 > 0:28:05for dredging here. James Orr from Friends of the Effort wants it

0:28:05 > 0:28:11stopped until a decision is made. This is where it's stored. This is

0:28:11 > 0:28:18one of several different processing plants. We are simply saying, how

0:28:18 > 0:28:24long can we sustain this unlawful extraction and not plan

0:28:24 > 0:28:29strategically for this resource in the future. The biggest unauthorised

0:28:29 > 0:28:32extraction in Northern Ireland. This dredging must have to be licenced in

0:28:32 > 0:28:40some way? There is a licence of sorts and that's the Easterly of

0:28:40 > 0:28:49Shaftesbury who owns the bay of the Loch. People may be surprised by

0:28:49 > 0:28:56that. It's a massive global problem? Across the world companies, called

0:28:56 > 0:29:00sanded Mafias, are moving in and illegally extracting these

0:29:00 > 0:29:07resources. It's a crisis in terms of the availability Forlan few future

0:29:07 > 0:29:12generations of a finite resources. Bird species are being lost because

0:29:12 > 0:29:16of unauthorised extraction. The Government says that while it makes

0:29:16 > 0:29:20a decision over planning permission, it has put controls in place which

0:29:20 > 0:29:31monitor dredges and limit the amount of sand they can extract. Fisherman

0:29:31 > 0:29:35marpt inis happy with his catch. It seems unlikely that the line in the

0:29:35 > 0:29:40sand will be drawn over this row any time soon. You have learned about

0:29:40 > 0:29:46dredging as well tonight.I know. I always wanted to know about sand.

0:29:46 > 0:29:47That's it for tonight.

0:29:47 > 0:29:49Thanks to our guest, Sharon Horgan.

0:29:49 > 0:29:50Game Night is in cinemas on Friday.

0:29:50 > 0:29:52Tomorrow, Lulu will be here and we'll have music

0:29:52 > 0:29:54from The Fratellis.

0:29:54 > 0:29:55Have a great evening and stay warm!

0:29:55 > 0:29:58Good night.
