0:00:00 > 0:00:01question is whether Disney will buy Rupert Murdoch's business from him

0:00:01 > 0:00:08and, if they do, many of the concerns about media plurality

0:00:08 > 0:00:09You're watching BBC News.

0:00:09 > 0:00:12We're leaving the News At One in order to bring you

0:00:12 > 0:00:15our special Oscar nominations programme.

0:00:15 > 0:00:18I'm joined by the film critic Jason Solomons,

0:00:18 > 0:00:20who's with me for the next 45 minutes.

0:00:20 > 0:00:22We'll be bringing you all the nominations

0:00:22 > 0:00:25as they are announced in Los Angeles.

0:00:25 > 0:00:29It is a fascinating year on many levels, we will talk about the Me

0:00:29 > 0:00:33Too campaign in a moment, but potentially a good year for the

0:00:33 > 0:00:37Brits?It is, look out for Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill, Daniel

0:00:37 > 0:00:45Day-Lewis in a film called Phantom Thread, which is not out in the UK

0:00:45 > 0:00:50get, and Daniel Kaluuya from Camden Town. Unless lookout for Sally

0:00:50 > 0:00:54Hawkins, who is in The Shape Of Water, which we expect to lead the

0:00:54 > 0:00:59nominations by the end of play today.Fascinating, good to have you

0:00:59 > 0:01:04with us, we will be joining those announcements, viewers joining us

0:01:04 > 0:01:07from BBC World as well.

0:01:18 > 0:01:21Hello, and welcome to this BBC News special programme,

0:01:21 > 0:01:25bringing you the 2018 Oscar nominations.

0:01:25 > 0:01:30I'm Jane Hill, and we are just minutes away from learning

0:01:30 > 0:01:36who has been short-listed for this year's Academy Awards.

0:01:36 > 0:01:38The film critic Jason Solomons is with me.

0:01:38 > 0:01:40We'll be discussing the likely contenders,

0:01:40 > 0:01:43and how different the ceremony might be

0:01:43 > 0:01:52after a turbulent year for Hollywood.

0:01:52 > 0:01:57We will be in Los Angeles in a little while to hear the first

0:01:57 > 0:02:01tranche of nominations. Let's talk about the opening thoughts, what are

0:02:01 > 0:02:05you looking out for, what are the films we might hear a lot of in the

0:02:05 > 0:02:10next half hour?I expect the title The Shape Of Water to feature very

0:02:10 > 0:02:14heavily, people are tipping it to go for 14 nominations, which would put

0:02:14 > 0:02:20it on an equal footing with Titanic and last year's La La Land, so

0:02:20 > 0:02:22record-breaking possibility, but whether it will be a winner I don't

0:02:22 > 0:02:27know. I expected star, Sally Hawkins, to be nominated, directed

0:02:27 > 0:02:32Guillermo del Toro from Mexico, and as you can see, the production

0:02:32 > 0:02:36design is rather fantastic, so a lot of craft categories, music as well.

0:02:36 > 0:02:42It is a very strange, a fishy story even, about a mute woman's

0:02:42 > 0:02:47admiration for a sea monster. It is not out in the UK yet, but it won in

0:02:47 > 0:02:51Venice in September last year, so a film that has got a lot of legs,

0:02:51 > 0:02:57just not in one of its lead characters. And Three Billboards

0:02:57 > 0:03:01Outside Ebbing, Missouri did very well at the Golden Globes, cracking

0:03:01 > 0:03:04central performance from Frances McDormand, who doesn't love her? I

0:03:04 > 0:03:10think she is quite remarkable. It has divided critics in some ways, in

0:03:10 > 0:03:13terms of issues of race, they could be questions about that. The film is

0:03:13 > 0:03:21doing very well, it won at the acting awards at the weekend,

0:03:21 > 0:03:23suggesting this is the favourite for Oscar glory at the moment. I think

0:03:23 > 0:03:29it will feature very heavily in the nominations, a film by London Irish

0:03:29 > 0:03:31director Martin McDonagh, featuring a powerhouse performance from

0:03:31 > 0:03:38Frances McDormand, who won for her performance in Fargo 21 years ago.I

0:03:38 > 0:03:41can't believe it was that long!It would be one of the longest gaps

0:03:41 > 0:03:46between winners, she will definitely get nominated for her performance.

0:03:46 > 0:03:52Obviously, Woody Harrelson stands a chance, in the supporting characters

0:03:52 > 0:03:58category, as does Sam Rockwell from the same film. It is offensive and

0:03:58 > 0:04:02equal opportunities, foul-mouthed, a firecracker of a script, about a

0:04:02 > 0:04:06murder in a small-town, and how it results in a kind of tinderbox

0:04:06 > 0:04:11atmosphere.And extraordinary depiction of small-town America. In

0:04:11 > 0:04:15terms of the general mood as we go into the 2018 Oscars, and how that

0:04:15 > 0:04:21also might influence the voting and the lists that we were here in a

0:04:21 > 0:04:27moment, a year dominated by abuse scandals, the Me Too campaign, by

0:04:27 > 0:04:31Harvey Weinstein. Whether we will see greater recognition of female

0:04:31 > 0:04:35voices, that there will, to some extent be female empowerment coming

0:04:35 > 0:04:39through in this list.In many senses, last year was an annus

0:04:39 > 0:04:44horribilis for Hollywood, can it put this behind itself now and show that

0:04:44 > 0:04:48it is adaptable and can be spry and light on its feet and adapt to what

0:04:48 > 0:04:52is going on off the screen? I think we will see that, I think we might

0:04:52 > 0:04:57see only the fifth ever best director nomination for a female

0:04:57 > 0:05:02film-maker in Greta Gerwig, whose film Lady Bird has been winning

0:05:02 > 0:05:05hearts and minds all around, brilliant lead performance from the

0:05:05 > 0:05:08young actress Saoirse Ronan from Ireland, also wonderful screenplay

0:05:08 > 0:05:17by Greta were -- Greta Gerwig, making her writing and directing

0:05:17 > 0:05:21debut. And Laurie Metcalf, who many people may have forgotten, from

0:05:21 > 0:05:26Roseanne all those years ago, making a big-screen comeback.They are

0:05:26 > 0:05:31terrific.A great double act, both of them will get nominations, I'm

0:05:31 > 0:05:34sure, but it is whether this female centred film will sweep all before

0:05:34 > 0:05:39it and get the norm and it deserves. There will be outcry, if I can tell

0:05:39 > 0:05:45you, if we end up with a group of white male directors, so I expect

0:05:45 > 0:05:49the Academy will pay attention to that and put her in for her first

0:05:49 > 0:05:53film, which would be a remarkable achievement. She is only in her mid

0:05:53 > 0:06:0030s, so it would be fantastic, but I will put my bias out there, I think

0:06:00 > 0:06:05Lady Bird is terrific. It will charm everyone by the end of this process.

0:06:05 > 0:06:08We are broadcasting to viewers around the world, but we are sitting

0:06:08 > 0:06:11in London following all of this in the UK, so we have to have a word

0:06:11 > 0:06:17about British contenders, because, goodness, I know we do well with

0:06:17 > 0:06:19acting talent, but this is a particularly strong year

0:06:19 > 0:06:24potentially.It is, led of course by Gary Oldman playing Winston

0:06:24 > 0:06:31Churchill, the man who has gone from playing Sid Vicious to playing

0:06:31 > 0:06:34Winston Churchill, and extraordinary performance under layers of

0:06:34 > 0:06:38prosthetic make-up, which I feel will also be nominated. It is

0:06:38 > 0:06:42directed by Joe Wright, and I expect the film, Darkest Hour, will feature

0:06:42 > 0:06:47in the craft categories. It looks fantastic, I wonder whether that was

0:06:47 > 0:06:51its strength, very striking to look at.Almost theatrical, looking at

0:06:51 > 0:06:55history through the eyes of drama. Never forgetting it is Gary Oldman

0:06:55 > 0:07:00under all that make-up, but his performance burns through it all. It

0:07:00 > 0:07:04is a terrific fusion of everything coming together, a very enjoyable

0:07:04 > 0:07:09film, I like it very much, Gary Oldman is hugely deserving, is not

0:07:09 > 0:07:14just for this performance, and his whole career. I expect him to lead

0:07:14 > 0:07:19the way, which I think Winston would be proud of! Other nominations,

0:07:19 > 0:07:21Sally Hawkins, and Daniel Day-Lewis, three-time winner already at the

0:07:21 > 0:07:25Oscars, extraordinary record, I think you will be nominated again

0:07:25 > 0:07:29for what he is billing as his final performance, a retirement flourish

0:07:29 > 0:07:42for his role as a 1950s could Juri Ide film called Phantom Thread.

0:07:43 > 0:07:47-- couturier.And Daniel Kaluuya?A fantastic talent in the film Get

0:07:47 > 0:07:53Out, a sort of horror-,

0:07:53 > 0:07:59fantastic talent in the film Get Out, a sort of horror-,, comedy,

0:07:59 > 0:08:05satire, it is a fantastic film, and I expected to be rewarded when the

0:08:05 > 0:08:08nominations are read out very soon it's mywe will head over to Los

0:08:08 > 0:08:15Angeles right now for the first tranche of nominations. It is all

0:08:15 > 0:08:24brought to you by the Academy. Let go to LA.

0:08:24 > 0:08:36When we hear the sound of the envelope tearing...And the winner

0:08:36 > 0:08:45is...The Oscar goes to...The Oscar goes to...And Oscar goes to...

0:09:17 > 0:09:23Awards. I am John Bailey, governor of the cinematographers' branch and

0:09:23 > 0:09:27president of the motion picture academy. This has been a remarkable

0:09:27 > 0:09:34year for the movies. Actors, writers, producers and directors

0:09:34 > 0:09:39have given us films that not only entertain but challenge us. There

0:09:39 > 0:09:43has been bowled, adventure is work in animation, documentaries and

0:09:43 > 0:09:50foreign-language films, visual effects, composers and sound

0:09:50 > 0:09:54artists, production designers, editors and cinematographers

0:09:54 > 0:09:59continue to raise the bar of their crafts, as do costume is, make-up

0:09:59 > 0:10:05and hair artists. This is a landmark year to honour their achievements.

0:20:38 > 0:20:41And Wonder.

0:20:44 > 0:20:48We still have more nominee announcements, but we will be back

0:20:48 > 0:20:58in a moment.A one minute and a half break... Do we get to take a nap?

0:20:58 > 0:21:05Yes!Cool!STUDIO: As you gathered, that's how the Academy has chosen to

0:21:05 > 0:21:12do it this year. We will be in LA in a moment for the

0:21:12 > 0:21:15rest of the categories. A lot of films people are familiar

0:21:15 > 0:21:20with, we heard a lot of Star Wars and Blade Runner, the Brits are

0:21:20 > 0:21:25doing well as well?Fantastic news for Sarah Greenwood and Katie

0:21:25 > 0:21:30Spencer, nominated not just once but twice in the same category for

0:21:30 > 0:21:35production design. Ford's Darkest Hour also Beauty and the Beast they

0:21:35 > 0:21:40are ruling the studio system! The Shape of Water already has seven

0:21:40 > 0:21:45nominations in the categories. On course to at least match the 14

0:21:45 > 0:21:49nominations record number at this point. Dunkirk doing very well with

0:21:49 > 0:21:54six so far. And Darkest Hour, almost in the shade with four. Doing

0:21:54 > 0:21:59fantastically already.Yes, interesting to see what is coming

0:21:59 > 0:22:06through there. It's interesting, every year we talk about the big

0:22:06 > 0:22:12films, a majority of people go and see them. Star Wars, those films

0:22:12 > 0:22:16don't always, rightly or wrongly, get recognition at the Oscars. We

0:22:16 > 0:22:21have reflected on this over the years. Some say with the caveat that

0:22:21 > 0:22:24these are the craft categories. They are important but they do not get

0:22:24 > 0:22:30talked about. It shows the expertise, in Sound mixing, like

0:22:30 > 0:22:34Blade Runner and Star Wars, being mentioned here. It is encouraging to

0:22:34 > 0:22:39film fans, on the basis of what they are doing. That strange presentation

0:22:39 > 0:22:47they gave there, all female lead by actresses. We saw this on Sunday

0:22:47 > 0:22:51night, at the Screen Actors Guild, all presented by females. It is

0:22:51 > 0:22:54having an effect already, that there is a female dominance in the

0:22:54 > 0:23:02nominations.And your thoughts on what stands out so far for you? I am

0:23:02 > 0:23:06wary, I'm looking at my list, I made notes every time a Brit is

0:23:06 > 0:23:11nominated. I am conscious this is going out worldwide. We don't want

0:23:11 > 0:23:16to be too Brit centric. It is lovely to see the talent and craft skills

0:23:16 > 0:23:20we have in this country. We talk about it in acting terms and we may

0:23:20 > 0:23:25see more on that in a moment, in the other categories. It is something

0:23:25 > 0:23:31that we do so well in the UK.We have a great studio system like

0:23:31 > 0:23:35Pinewood, people hone their craft is here and in the theatre. They

0:23:35 > 0:23:40translate from television to the big screen. Roger Deakins has been

0:23:40 > 0:23:44nominated for cinematography. His 14th time, he hasn't yet won. I must

0:23:44 > 0:23:49mention that we have a record, history being made. A female

0:23:49 > 0:23:54cinematographer, a black female seminoma photographer. --

0:23:54 > 0:23:59cinematographer. Rachael Morrison, to then be nominated as a

0:23:59 > 0:24:02cinematographer at the Oscars. A glass ceiling has been broken just

0:24:02 > 0:24:07now. That is extraordinary and it is brilliant. Mudbound is an

0:24:07 > 0:24:11extraordinary film. And it has only taken 90 years of Academy Awards to

0:24:11 > 0:24:15get to that point! Mudbound is interesting. It is something that

0:24:15 > 0:24:20has been available on Netflix. It opens up another debate about the

0:24:20 > 0:24:24Academy Awards. We may see it nominated among Best picture.

0:24:24 > 0:24:29Recognition now that cinema is changing. With what people watch and

0:24:29 > 0:24:33the way they watch things. The Academy, always the Mount Olympus of

0:24:33 > 0:24:38preserving the cinema experience. They are having to change it and

0:24:38 > 0:24:43recognise it this year.Interesting, let's return to LA. Let's hear the

0:24:43 > 0:24:46final set of nominations including those big categories. Let's go over

0:24:46 > 0:24:48to LA...

0:35:01 > 0:35:04APPLAUSE CHEERING

0:35:09 > 0:35:14STUDIO: So, finally, the full list of nominations, nine films nominated

0:35:14 > 0:35:16for Best picture. Remember, this is the third year

0:35:16 > 0:35:21where they are allowed a maximum of ten. Nine nominated for Best

0:35:21 > 0:35:25picture. If our maths is correct, it is The Shape of Water leading the

0:35:25 > 0:35:33way.Yes, unlucky for some, 13. I'm sure they will take it now! A record

0:35:33 > 0:35:37has been broken. I mentioned Rachael Morrison, a female cinematographer

0:35:37 > 0:35:46but also Greta Gerwig, nominated as Best Director for her work on Lady

0:35:46 > 0:35:49Bird. Only the fifth female director to ever be nominated. You can try

0:35:49 > 0:35:52and work out who the others are!The only one who has ever won is Kathryn

0:35:52 > 0:36:01Bigelow.Sofia Coppola, and we will find the other one!Meryl Streep was

0:36:01 > 0:36:11in there. We chuckled, it is...Her 21st nomination, breaking her own

0:36:11 > 0:36:16record!The Shape of Water isn't yet out in the UK, another week before

0:36:16 > 0:36:19cinemagoers make up their own mind on that. There are many fascinating

0:36:19 > 0:36:28areas in this week. Greta Gerwig, in director and screenplay, and the

0:36:28 > 0:36:32wonderful Saoirse Ronan, as we thought, here she is with Laurie

0:36:32 > 0:36:36Metcalf, nominated as Best Supporting Actress.Lady Bird with

0:36:36 > 0:36:42five nominations, an achievement for a first-time film, an indie film, we

0:36:42 > 0:36:49are seeing that with these best picture nominations. They are in the

0:36:49 > 0:36:56lead. With Three Billboards Outside Ebbing. Get Out. These films that we

0:36:56 > 0:37:00are seeing, they make the shape of the Oscars. Things have changed, you

0:37:00 > 0:37:05do not get heritage products any more. The Darkest Hour is in there,

0:37:05 > 0:37:09and Dunkirk you would expect that but we have different films in the

0:37:09 > 0:37:14make up of nine. It is exciting this year. They've done a very good set

0:37:14 > 0:37:20of nominations.Martin McDonagh would not getting a nod for best

0:37:20 > 0:37:24director. There was the sense he may get it. He has been squeezed out.

0:37:24 > 0:37:30The film has a lot of nominations in other categories.I think he will

0:37:30 > 0:37:34win Best Original Screenplay. He can be proud of his work, he could also

0:37:34 > 0:37:39get best picture.Let's speak to one of the British successors, a woman

0:37:39 > 0:37:45who I hope is opening the champagne, Rachel Shenton, the screenwriter of

0:37:45 > 0:37:50The Silent Child, nominated in the live action Short film category,

0:37:50 > 0:37:55joins us now. Many congratulations, Rachel!Thank you so much!I try

0:37:55 > 0:37:59never, in so many years in this job, to say how do you feel... But I have

0:37:59 > 0:38:07to ask you!I honestly don't know how I feel. It is surreal. I feel

0:38:07 > 0:38:13very emotional. It is lovely news. People listening to us on the BBC,

0:38:13 > 0:38:18they may know you began as an actress in Hollyoaks. You have

0:38:18 > 0:38:22written a very personal story. We are seeing clips from your film

0:38:22 > 0:38:28right now, Rachel. It is the story of a young deaf girl where you and

0:38:28 > 0:38:33your partner, who worked on this, you deliberately wanted to cast a

0:38:33 > 0:38:38young girl who, is, indeed deaf herself. For those who do not know

0:38:38 > 0:38:41about your film, tell us how this film has come to pass and how you

0:38:41 > 0:38:47reach this amazing point of being an Oscar nominee. My gosh, it is so

0:38:47 > 0:38:51bizarre, that sentence! This story is extremely close to me. I am a

0:38:51 > 0:38:57writer and an actress. I play Jalan, in The Silent Child, about a

0:38:57 > 0:39:02profoundly deaf little girl called Libby, born into a hearing family.

0:39:02 > 0:39:11This story is very close to my heart. My dad was profoundly deaf

0:39:11 > 0:39:16and lived the last dozen years of his life being profoundly deaf. I

0:39:16 > 0:39:19believe that film is a powerful medium to portray this message and

0:39:19 > 0:39:27this story has not been told before. It needs to be told. Me and my

0:39:27 > 0:39:32fiance, the director of the project, we believe so much in authenticity

0:39:32 > 0:39:38in casting. Casting a profoundly deaf role, for our lead, that was

0:39:38 > 0:39:40essential. There was no other option. We knew that it would be

0:39:40 > 0:39:46quite difficult, because the brief is so specific. We set out to do it

0:39:46 > 0:39:53and we did it. Here we are.We are running out of time but before we

0:39:53 > 0:39:56let you go, who is on the plane with you? Who

0:39:56 > 0:40:01gets to go to the Oscars? May, the director and our leading lady,

0:40:01 > 0:40:02Maisie!

0:40:07 > 0:40:12Congratulations, Rachel Shenton, Oscar nominee! Let's also talk to

0:40:12 > 0:40:15Sarah Greenwood, another successful brick here this lunchtime. Thank you

0:40:15 > 0:40:21very much for talking to us. You are not a first timer, you have been

0:40:21 > 0:40:24nominated before. Congratulations for your work on the Darkest Hour.

0:40:24 > 0:40:33Thank you. It is fantastic. Also, Beauty and the Beast we have two

0:40:33 > 0:40:37nominations.I should point that out, Sarah. While pointed out! That

0:40:37 > 0:40:37is positively

0:40:42 > 0:40:45-- positively greedy! Doubling your chances of winning an Oscar on the

0:40:45 > 0:40:534th of March!I'm not a betting person but I cannot think it is

0:40:53 > 0:40:57something to do with us splitting the vote. But it is amazing to get

0:40:57 > 0:41:02this far. With two such different films, it is absolutely astonishing,

0:41:02 > 0:41:07actually. I cannot quite take it in. It doesn't get any easier the more

0:41:07 > 0:41:13nominations you get. It is more thrilling, it is fantastic.Jason

0:41:13 > 0:41:22Solomons here, congratulations. Thank you. Thank you very much! What

0:41:22 > 0:41:27about these films in Britain, having them recognised in Los Angeles for

0:41:27 > 0:41:30our skills here? What makes it so special about what other craftsmen

0:41:30 > 0:41:36can do here? They are two such different films. Beauty and the

0:41:36 > 0:41:42Beast amazingly, was all built and shot on the stages at Shepperton

0:41:42 > 0:41:50Studios. With the most phenomenal crew and crew of craftsmen. It was

0:41:50 > 0:41:54old school Hollywood built in London. It was fantastic. Then you

0:41:54 > 0:42:00have something like Darkest Hour. What was incredible was you have

0:42:00 > 0:42:05these incredible locations. We went up to Yorkshire and Manchester. And

0:42:05 > 0:42:08in London. It is phenomenal. Everything that is available to us

0:42:08 > 0:42:14over here, facilities and locations, it is stunning. Long may it

0:42:14 > 0:42:22continue!Sarah, we wish you all the best. Congratulations. I am

0:42:22 > 0:42:26genuinely a huge fan of your work on the Darkest Hour, I watched it only

0:42:26 > 0:42:29the other day and the first thing we both said was how extraordinary that

0:42:29 > 0:42:33film looked. We wish you all the best and we are crossing our

0:42:33 > 0:42:37fingers. Good luck again for the 4th of March. Sarah Greenwood, nominated

0:42:37 > 0:42:42in two categories for her work on Beauty and the Beast and the Darkest

0:42:42 > 0:42:46Hour. So many more we haven't ventured. Call Me By Your Name has

0:42:46 > 0:42:51done pretty well in the list of nominations. Get Out, it is worth

0:42:51 > 0:42:57mentioning another British talent with Daniel Kaluuya. Most people who

0:42:57 > 0:43:01are watching it do not know that he is British. Samuel L Jackson had to

0:43:01 > 0:43:06say, why are these British actors taking our jobs? Why? Because he is

0:43:06 > 0:43:13so darn good!Fantastic, those nominations have been unveiled. Head

0:43:13 > 0:43:15to the cinema and find out who you think should win!

0:43:15 > 0:43:19We will find out on Sunday, the 4th of March.

0:43:19 > 0:43:23The full reaction to the nominations here on BBC News, and on the BBC

0:43:23 > 0:43:29News website as well. Enjoy your cinema going and thank

0:43:29 > 0:43:31you for being with us. Goodbye.
