0:00:02 > 0:00:04So, the sewers have worked with wool, with cotton,

0:00:04 > 0:00:05they've even sewn with silk.

0:00:05 > 0:00:10This week, is all about how they deal with a totally new fabric.

0:00:10 > 0:00:13To be completely frank, I wasn't sure that there was another one.

0:00:13 > 0:00:14Tell no-one.

0:00:16 > 0:00:17At the last sewing bee...

0:00:17 > 0:00:19Things aren't going very well.

0:00:19 > 0:00:22- Why is that, then? - I've just sewn my fly shut.

0:00:22 > 0:00:25Tamara and Heather were beaten by Lynda, who won garment of the week.

0:00:25 > 0:00:28It's my pyjamas!

0:00:28 > 0:00:33And Simon...was asked to leave the sewing room.

0:00:33 > 0:00:35Ahh, I'm not sure how to take that.

0:00:35 > 0:00:36Now...

0:00:36 > 0:00:38All I've got going in my head at the moment is, "Arrgh!"

0:00:38 > 0:00:42..the sewers face the fastest pattern challenge so far...

0:00:42 > 0:00:44Will I ever wear leggings? No.

0:00:44 > 0:00:47..alterations that will stretch them to the limit...

0:00:47 > 0:00:48I'm making it up as I go along.

0:00:48 > 0:00:50- No, we can't do that.- We can.

0:00:50 > 0:00:53..and a made to measure dress...

0:00:53 > 0:00:54- Very stretchy.- ..that clings.

0:00:54 > 0:00:57I don't even want to look. Does she know what I'm doing?

0:00:57 > 0:00:59I want to drown in a bucket of gin.

0:01:26 > 0:01:28The eight remaining sewers are back in East London.

0:01:28 > 0:01:33Last week, I won garment of the week. I've had a little text off my oldest

0:01:33 > 0:01:36daughter telling me to keep up the good work.

0:01:36 > 0:01:38Well, this morning, I've given myself a good talking to.

0:01:38 > 0:01:41I'm going to read the pattern carefully and I'm going to try and do

0:01:41 > 0:01:45everything that it asks for, rather than what I think I should be doing.

0:01:45 > 0:01:49You learn from your other competitors, how I can, perhaps,

0:01:49 > 0:01:52get a bit quicker or a little bit more creative.

0:01:52 > 0:01:54I've been keeping my eye on everybody.

0:01:54 > 0:01:56Last man standing,

0:01:56 > 0:01:59but I think this might be the beginning of the end.

0:01:59 > 0:02:02The sewers will have to make three garments over the next two days,

0:02:02 > 0:02:06and they have no idea what their first challenge will involve.

0:02:06 > 0:02:09Welcome back to the sewing room. How are we all?

0:02:09 > 0:02:11WOMAN: Terrific!

0:02:11 > 0:02:12That's what we want to hear.

0:02:12 > 0:02:14This week, the judges would like to see

0:02:14 > 0:02:18how you cope with stretch fabrics.

0:02:18 > 0:02:20As usual, challenge number one,

0:02:20 > 0:02:23you're given a pattern that you have not seen before.

0:02:23 > 0:02:25May, what is it?

0:02:25 > 0:02:27We'd like you to make a pair of leggings

0:02:27 > 0:02:30and they must fit your mannequin.

0:02:30 > 0:02:32LAUGHTER

0:02:32 > 0:02:35You have an hour and a half. Good luck.

0:02:35 > 0:02:36Off you go.

0:02:38 > 0:02:41The sewers are free to make their leggings from any

0:02:41 > 0:02:44of the stretch fabric in the sewing room's haberdashery.

0:02:44 > 0:02:47I've only practised once with a stretch material, so,

0:02:47 > 0:02:50"Aahh," is what I think of that challenge at the moment.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53If I get this to work I'll be making everyone in school funky

0:02:53 > 0:02:56Friday leggings for Christmas.

0:02:56 > 0:02:58May, Patrick, why stretch?

0:02:58 > 0:03:02Stretch fabrics handle completely differently to woven fabrics.

0:03:02 > 0:03:03You can sculpt them.

0:03:03 > 0:03:06They can fit very closely to the body.

0:03:06 > 0:03:08Does that make them easier to work with or harder?

0:03:08 > 0:03:10They're mobile, they slip around.

0:03:10 > 0:03:12There's an inherent instability in the fabric itself that

0:03:12 > 0:03:14they're going to have to deal with.

0:03:14 > 0:03:15A standard woven fabric consists

0:03:15 > 0:03:18of a stable grid of straight threads,

0:03:18 > 0:03:20whereas stretch fabric is constructed from

0:03:20 > 0:03:21a series of knitted loops,

0:03:21 > 0:03:25whose shape allows the thread to move in different directions.

0:03:25 > 0:03:28The pattern is based on a relatively slight amount of stretch.

0:03:28 > 0:03:31If they are using a fabric that is considerably stretchier,

0:03:31 > 0:03:33they're going to have to adjust the pattern

0:03:33 > 0:03:34and adjust the fit to compensate.

0:03:34 > 0:03:39We do not want to see twisted waistbands, saggy bottoms,

0:03:39 > 0:03:40ill-fitting legs.

0:03:40 > 0:03:43We want to see a smashing pair of leggings.

0:03:43 > 0:03:45I'm looking at the way it stretches,

0:03:45 > 0:03:49cos on the pattern it says two-way stretch, which means

0:03:49 > 0:03:52cos they're leggings, you want them stretching across the legs,

0:03:52 > 0:03:55not up and down.

0:03:55 > 0:03:57Despite being a part-time yoga instructor,

0:03:57 > 0:04:00Tamara has never sewn herself a stretchy outfit for work.

0:04:01 > 0:04:04Knees onto the back of the elbows.

0:04:04 > 0:04:07She's chosen a bold pattern for the first challenge.

0:04:07 > 0:04:09I'm not that confident.

0:04:09 > 0:04:12I've never really had to make anything that's that tightly fitted.

0:04:12 > 0:04:16But you know what I'm going to do, Claudia? I'm going to read the pattern start to finish.

0:04:16 > 0:04:19That's it, read it. Learn it off by heart, in maybe four languages.

0:04:19 > 0:04:22I'm going to come back and test you in 30.

0:04:22 > 0:04:25I've chosen a cat woman, wet look.

0:04:25 > 0:04:27I quite like this.

0:04:27 > 0:04:28Do you remember this, Gracie?

0:04:28 > 0:04:32This was the first time you danced with a boy.

0:04:32 > 0:04:35The first clothes Julie ever made featured stretch fabric -

0:04:35 > 0:04:37she made ballroom dancing outfits for

0:04:37 > 0:04:39her youngest daughter Gracie.

0:04:39 > 0:04:42Aw, happy days, eh?

0:04:42 > 0:04:43- PATRICK:- This is slick.

0:04:43 > 0:04:45It's a bit S&M, isn't it?

0:04:45 > 0:04:48It does have a hint of that about it!

0:04:48 > 0:04:51Because it's a simple pattern, I thought I'd pick a difficult fabric.

0:04:51 > 0:04:53Cos I need to redeem myself, don't I?

0:04:53 > 0:04:56I see you haven't got a tape measure out?

0:04:56 > 0:04:57For...?

0:05:01 > 0:05:03We do want them to fit.

0:05:04 > 0:05:07I'm just going to check the measurements of the hip

0:05:07 > 0:05:09of the mannequin.

0:05:09 > 0:05:13While the pattern for the leggings is simple, there's a catch.

0:05:13 > 0:05:17The sewers have to cut out just two pieces of stretch fabric,

0:05:17 > 0:05:22sew them together at the crotch, the seat and the inside leg seams.

0:05:22 > 0:05:25The waistband is created by folding a ring of elastic

0:05:25 > 0:05:27into the top edge of the leggings,

0:05:27 > 0:05:29which is secured into place

0:05:29 > 0:05:32with a row of twin-needle stretch stitching.

0:05:32 > 0:05:35I thought, "This is quite simple stuff. Where's the issue?"

0:05:35 > 0:05:37It's obviously in that "must fit" bit.

0:05:37 > 0:05:41The patterns feature lines, marking options for the garment size

0:05:41 > 0:05:44but as the stretchiness of the fabric is variable,

0:05:44 > 0:05:46the marks won't necessarily be accurate.

0:05:46 > 0:05:48So I measured the mannequin.

0:05:48 > 0:05:51I'm going to cut it to fit nicely without stretching it too much.

0:05:51 > 0:05:53I do like this material.

0:05:53 > 0:05:56If it comes out well, I'm going to make myself some cycling shorts.

0:05:56 > 0:05:59David keeps his haberdashery in his garage.

0:05:59 > 0:06:02So far, it hasn't included any stretch fabric.

0:06:02 > 0:06:03You're the only boy left

0:06:03 > 0:06:06and you're making a pair of camo pattern leggings.

0:06:06 > 0:06:08- Yeah. - I love the way this is happening.

0:06:08 > 0:06:13I'm gutted Simon's gone, cos I can't talk about man stuff any more.

0:06:13 > 0:06:15And at the weekend I bought an impact driver -

0:06:15 > 0:06:17it's the best thing I've ever bought.

0:06:17 > 0:06:19- What is it? - It's like an impact wrench.

0:06:19 > 0:06:21You bung it on wheel nuts and it goes...

0:06:21 > 0:06:23Like in Formula 1.

0:06:23 > 0:06:25This is amazing. I'm so pleased we had this chat.

0:06:25 > 0:06:27Can he leave?

0:06:32 > 0:06:35One hour left to make a pair of stretch leggings.

0:06:35 > 0:06:36And if they're confident

0:06:36 > 0:06:39they've cut out their pattern pieces correctly...

0:06:39 > 0:06:40Nobody wants baggy leggings.

0:06:40 > 0:06:42..construction can begin.

0:06:42 > 0:06:44This is the first time I've sat at an overlocker

0:06:44 > 0:06:48and all I've got going in my head is, "Arrgh!"

0:06:49 > 0:06:51An overlocker creates neatened seams

0:06:51 > 0:06:54by cutting the edge of the fabric as it sews.

0:06:55 > 0:06:57I'm just doing the crotches.

0:06:57 > 0:06:59It uses three or four threads at the same time

0:06:59 > 0:07:01which wrap around the seam -

0:07:01 > 0:07:04essential for leggings as it creates a stitch

0:07:04 > 0:07:07which stretches with the fabric.

0:07:07 > 0:07:08Here we go...

0:07:08 > 0:07:12But it's a piece of equipment that isn't familiar to everyone.

0:07:12 > 0:07:16I've obviously been missing something all these years.

0:07:16 > 0:07:17Ooh!

0:07:17 > 0:07:21I'm sewing the leg seam, which goes all the way up from the ankle

0:07:21 > 0:07:23and to the crotch and back down again.

0:07:23 > 0:07:26I like it, cos it's quite quick.

0:07:26 > 0:07:28I've got a lot of control over the fabric.

0:07:28 > 0:07:30I think overlockers are a little bit scary

0:07:30 > 0:07:32because they kind of just eat the fabric.

0:07:32 > 0:07:36And unless you're absolutely just bang on where it needs to be,

0:07:36 > 0:07:39I'm sure, actually, you could take chunks out and not know.

0:07:41 > 0:07:44When I'm at home sewing, I spend ages - doing the seam,

0:07:44 > 0:07:47zigzagging, cutting.

0:07:47 > 0:07:49This does it in one. I love the overlocker.

0:07:49 > 0:07:51I need one.

0:07:51 > 0:07:53Lynda bought her first sewing machine

0:07:53 > 0:07:54after her daughter Sarah was born.

0:07:54 > 0:07:57She began making clothes for all her children.

0:07:57 > 0:07:59They were called pedal pushers

0:07:59 > 0:08:01and her friend up the street loved them.

0:08:01 > 0:08:04So her mum popped up to the shops straightaway,

0:08:04 > 0:08:07got the material and they both sat watching me making hers

0:08:07 > 0:08:10because they both wanted to dress the same.

0:08:10 > 0:08:12You seem to be storming ahead here.

0:08:12 > 0:08:13Do I? Really?

0:08:13 > 0:08:15Yeah.

0:08:15 > 0:08:18Lynda is the first sewer ready to check the fit on her mannequin.

0:08:18 > 0:08:20- PATRICK:- Yours is quite stretchy, though.

0:08:20 > 0:08:23Ssh, don't say that. Mine's perfect.

0:08:23 > 0:08:26That's perfect, Patrick, for leggings.

0:08:26 > 0:08:29- You know what?- Voila.- It's not bad.

0:08:30 > 0:08:33You can't even see the seam at the side, look.

0:08:33 > 0:08:35Ha-ha!

0:08:35 > 0:08:37There isn't one.

0:08:37 > 0:08:40When I went and put them on the dummy, you've to look inside

0:08:40 > 0:08:44to see which is the bottom bit and which is the other bit.

0:08:44 > 0:08:46The judges will expect a fit that hugs the body.

0:08:48 > 0:08:51But one that still allows movement and doesn't sag.

0:08:51 > 0:08:54- It'll be all right.- Yeah.

0:08:56 > 0:08:58It needs to go in a little bit more, actually.

0:08:58 > 0:09:01Chinelo has made dozens of outfits for herself and her sister Chica.

0:09:01 > 0:09:04It's like coming into a mall every time I come to her house.

0:09:04 > 0:09:05I go home with lots of goodies.

0:09:05 > 0:09:09But almost always in a non-stretch, woven fabric.

0:09:09 > 0:09:12When I put it on my mannequin it was a bit baggy at the crotch area,

0:09:12 > 0:09:15so I thought, "That doesn't look fitted."

0:09:15 > 0:09:17So I just took it in a little bit there.

0:09:17 > 0:09:20It does stretch quite a bit that way, doesn't it?

0:09:20 > 0:09:22So you have got to make sure it fits your mannequin.

0:09:22 > 0:09:24Because it stretches that way,

0:09:24 > 0:09:26it will cling round the line of the body.

0:09:26 > 0:09:28Whereas if you put the stretch the other way,

0:09:28 > 0:09:30it just pulls out when you're wearing them -

0:09:30 > 0:09:32they get longer and longer.

0:09:32 > 0:09:35The stretch fabrics in the sewing room's haberdashery all

0:09:35 > 0:09:40contain Lycra, a fibre which gives it varying degrees of springiness.

0:09:41 > 0:09:44It was originally pioneered in the late 1950s to make women's

0:09:44 > 0:09:46girdles more comfortable.

0:09:46 > 0:09:50Up until then, they were made of rubber, which was stiff and sweaty.

0:09:50 > 0:09:55American chemical company DuPont decided to find an alternative.

0:09:55 > 0:09:57What DuPont did was they asked women,

0:09:57 > 0:10:00"If you could have anything in the world, what would you like?"

0:10:00 > 0:10:02And they said, "A comfortable girdle."

0:10:02 > 0:10:08So it took DuPont 20 years to actually invent a comfortable fibre.

0:10:08 > 0:10:10What exactly is Lycra?

0:10:10 > 0:10:13It's bonded polyurethane, which is

0:10:13 > 0:10:18two sorts of chemicals that you put together to make fibres,

0:10:18 > 0:10:20and depending on what you put together,

0:10:20 > 0:10:22the fibres are different -

0:10:22 > 0:10:26some are resilient, some are firm, some are stretchy.

0:10:26 > 0:10:29And Lycra is made out of a sort of straight one

0:10:29 > 0:10:33and a corkscrew one that are bonded together under high pressure

0:10:33 > 0:10:35and that's what it looks like.

0:10:35 > 0:10:38They call this the fibre that loves you back.

0:10:38 > 0:10:41It's like a hug, it's not like a strangle,

0:10:41 > 0:10:44which is what the old girdles were.

0:10:44 > 0:10:46The new fabric transformed the production of the girdle,

0:10:46 > 0:10:49but in the 1960s when girdles fell out of fashion,

0:10:49 > 0:10:54it seemed that there was no further use for this new fabric.

0:10:54 > 0:10:57How did Lycra make its way back in?

0:10:57 > 0:11:00DuPont spent a lot of time trying to save the girdle,

0:11:00 > 0:11:05but meanwhile, there were these warehouses full of Lycra.

0:11:05 > 0:11:08And, just about this time, aerobics start,

0:11:08 > 0:11:11and a few small seamstresses think,

0:11:11 > 0:11:16"Why don't we use this underwear stuff to make interesting workout clothes?"

0:11:16 > 0:11:19And that's how it happened.

0:11:19 > 0:11:22Lycra leotards were soon seen up and down the country

0:11:22 > 0:11:24in aerobics and dance classes.

0:11:24 > 0:11:28But it was the vision of one London dance teacher that would see Lycra

0:11:28 > 0:11:33make the leap from gym clothes to clothes, and that was Debbie Moore.

0:11:33 > 0:11:37In 1979, she decided that what London needed was a dance studio,

0:11:37 > 0:11:41and not just for dancers but for ordinary men and women.

0:11:41 > 0:11:44She bought an old pineapple warehouse here in Covent Garden

0:11:44 > 0:11:47and called it Pineapple Dance Studios.

0:11:47 > 0:11:49Hr clients were all wearing Lycra dance wear,

0:11:49 > 0:11:52but she spotted room for improvement.

0:11:52 > 0:11:57They had shiny nylon Lycra, and it was very sweaty for them,

0:11:57 > 0:12:01and the dance wear was like school uniform dance wear.

0:12:01 > 0:12:05I thought, "Wouldn't it be great to have cotton with Lycra?"

0:12:05 > 0:12:08And that's when I went to DuPont.

0:12:10 > 0:12:13Working with DuPont, Debbie developed cotton/Lycra leotards -

0:12:13 > 0:12:17natural, comfortable and breathable, with high-cut legs,

0:12:17 > 0:12:22low-cut fronts and backs, it was ideal for Debbie's dancers.

0:12:22 > 0:12:26It wasn't long, really, before I thought how great this

0:12:26 > 0:12:32fabric would be for a pull-on skirt, or for a strappy dress, or something.

0:12:32 > 0:12:35From then on, with this wonderful fabric, it was endless to make

0:12:35 > 0:12:40wonderful long-sleeved, scoop-necked dresses, beautiful necklines.

0:12:40 > 0:12:43And we were the first people to put Lycra into outerwear.

0:12:43 > 0:12:48I mean, it was a total revolution in the way people dressed, overnight.

0:12:48 > 0:12:50It was amazing.

0:12:50 > 0:12:54Debbie's determination to make comfy clothes for her dancers resulted

0:12:54 > 0:12:59in taking what people were wearing in the studios out onto the street.

0:12:59 > 0:13:02Soon, cotton Lycra was appearing in all sorts of street wear,

0:13:02 > 0:13:03from dresses to suits,

0:13:03 > 0:13:06totally transforming the clothes people wear.

0:13:09 > 0:13:13You're halfway through, everybody - 45 minutes left.

0:13:13 > 0:13:15Every pair of leggings should be

0:13:15 > 0:13:16topped with an elasticated waistband.

0:13:16 > 0:13:20Pin the elastic around side of waist, matching pins,

0:13:20 > 0:13:22with the edge of elastic even with the edge of the waist,

0:13:22 > 0:13:25and the seam on the elastic lined up at the centre legging.

0:13:25 > 0:13:28Stitch on top of the elastic along

0:13:28 > 0:13:30the outside edge with the overlocker.

0:13:30 > 0:13:33Stretch elastic to fit, if necessary.

0:13:33 > 0:13:35That's easy.

0:13:35 > 0:13:37What you do is you take your elastic

0:13:37 > 0:13:41and you divide your elastic up into sections.

0:13:41 > 0:13:43- Can you see I've got a pin there? - Yeah.- A pin there.

0:13:43 > 0:13:45So, into quarters?

0:13:45 > 0:13:47Then what you do is do exactly the same

0:13:47 > 0:13:52on the top of your pair of leggings, match a pin to a pin.

0:13:52 > 0:13:55So what happens is, you have it pinned at intervals,

0:13:55 > 0:13:57and it's completely controlled.

0:13:57 > 0:14:01So the fullness here goes into the band. When you've sewn that,

0:14:01 > 0:14:03wrapped that over and stitched it,

0:14:03 > 0:14:06this will be completely flat.

0:14:06 > 0:14:09You've distributed all the fullness evenly onto the elastic.

0:14:09 > 0:14:12- And that's what you're after? - Absolutely.

0:14:12 > 0:14:16Years ago, I think I made a sort of tennis outfit

0:14:16 > 0:14:19and I'm sure that had a waistband like this.

0:14:19 > 0:14:22You had to make 1970s frilly knickers

0:14:22 > 0:14:24to go with your tennis dress.

0:14:24 > 0:14:25I seem to remember doing...

0:14:25 > 0:14:28It's a long time ago.

0:14:28 > 0:14:31Both of Cerina's daughters attended dance classes since they were young,

0:14:31 > 0:14:34But neither of them have ever asked her to make any leggings.

0:14:34 > 0:14:38My mum's very clever in that she can make her own patterns,

0:14:38 > 0:14:41so I can just draw a dress and say, "I'd like that, please."

0:14:41 > 0:14:44My friends are so jealous, it's crazy,

0:14:44 > 0:14:47because I always have a different dress that nobody else will have.

0:14:48 > 0:14:52I've got to pull the elastic to match the length of the fabric,

0:14:52 > 0:14:56but not over-pull it or else you'd get a sort of fluting effect.

0:14:58 > 0:15:02If the sewers don't maintain an even tension as they stitch

0:15:02 > 0:15:04their elastic to the stretch fabric...

0:15:04 > 0:15:07How is the stretch of your fabric versus the stretch of your elastic?

0:15:07 > 0:15:11The fabric needs to be pulled slightly but not an awful lot.

0:15:11 > 0:15:15..the waistband will pucker, making it impossible to lie flat.

0:15:15 > 0:15:16You stretch the elastic the same time

0:15:16 > 0:15:19and you've got to get your fabric aligned with the edge

0:15:19 > 0:15:23so it doesn't all get chewed up like this.

0:15:23 > 0:15:25I don't know how to get out of this now.

0:15:25 > 0:15:28My job is, I train dressage riders.

0:15:28 > 0:15:32There's a lot of similarities between dressage and sewing.

0:15:32 > 0:15:34The fact that you have to have precision

0:15:34 > 0:15:36and you've just got to go for it.

0:15:36 > 0:15:40Heather's decided to cut away her first attempt at sewing the elastic.

0:15:40 > 0:15:44Fortunately this is actually really easy to undo.

0:15:49 > 0:15:52You have 30 minutes left, sewers.

0:15:56 > 0:15:59Fold elastic and from the right edge of leggings...

0:15:59 > 0:16:02Stitch...

0:16:02 > 0:16:07Stitch on inner edge...with a twin stretch needle.

0:16:09 > 0:16:12No idea what that means.

0:16:12 > 0:16:16Well, that's where I sewed the elastic with the overlocker.

0:16:16 > 0:16:19Now we've got to turn it over, like that,

0:16:19 > 0:16:23and sew from the right side with a twin needle.

0:16:23 > 0:16:26So I'll have two rows of parallel stitching along the waistband

0:16:26 > 0:16:28and along the bottoms.

0:16:28 > 0:16:30I never knew a twin needle existed.

0:16:30 > 0:16:33Me neither, David - this is a new world for all of us.

0:16:33 > 0:16:35We've got two needles, going into one socket

0:16:35 > 0:16:38so you do two rows of stitching and then the bottom thread

0:16:38 > 0:16:42zigzags between the two top rows of stitching.

0:16:42 > 0:16:44It makes it slightly stretchy.

0:16:44 > 0:16:45Here we go.

0:16:46 > 0:16:50This twin row of stitching should ensure the waistband is secure

0:16:50 > 0:16:52and lies flat against the body.

0:16:52 > 0:16:54You've got to feel for the elastic

0:16:54 > 0:16:58and just run it around the edge and then it secures the waistband.

0:16:58 > 0:17:00And as it will be visible on the outside of the leggings,

0:17:00 > 0:17:02it must look perfectly straight.

0:17:02 > 0:17:04Come on, come on.

0:17:04 > 0:17:06This is better than my wedding night, David.

0:17:08 > 0:17:10But it's not proving a pleasure for everyone.

0:17:14 > 0:17:17The needle keeps chewing up the fabric. It don't like the fabric.

0:17:17 > 0:17:19I've finished my leggings

0:17:19 > 0:17:22so I just thought I might put a little cheeky pocket on.

0:17:22 > 0:17:25I've just had a loud little voice in my head going,

0:17:25 > 0:17:26"What are you doing?"

0:17:26 > 0:17:29Jenni began making her own clothes a year ago.

0:17:29 > 0:17:32One of her favourite creations is a floral stretch leotard

0:17:32 > 0:17:34to which she added tassels.

0:17:34 > 0:17:39If I had to describe my sewing, whether it's the fabric I'm using

0:17:39 > 0:17:43or the patterns I'm choosing or just, yeah, I'd say crazy.

0:17:44 > 0:17:49- Let's hope this works.- Sewers, you've got five minutes left.

0:17:49 > 0:17:50Right.

0:17:50 > 0:17:53Jenni shouldn't have done the pocket.

0:17:53 > 0:17:57It's asking for a two-centimetre hem at the bottom.

0:17:57 > 0:18:02I'm struggling to put pins in the hem of this legging leg.

0:18:02 > 0:18:04SHE WHISPERS

0:18:04 > 0:18:06Hold your breath.

0:18:19 > 0:18:22- Keep going.- Turn! Turn! Turn!

0:18:30 > 0:18:31It's doing it again.

0:18:37 > 0:18:40I don't think May's going to like that, is she, in the crotch?

0:18:42 > 0:18:44They look mangled, but we have pocket.

0:18:44 > 0:18:48Do I wear leggings? No. Will I ever wear leggings?

0:18:48 > 0:18:51- No.- Dave, I'll lend you these.

0:18:51 > 0:18:53- The shiny ones? - I'll lend you me S&M ones!

0:18:53 > 0:18:56I tell you what, for a small fee I'll wear them for you.

0:18:56 > 0:18:59Sewers, you have one minute left.

0:18:59 > 0:19:02Please put your leggings on your mannequins.

0:19:11 > 0:19:13I can't dress the thing.

0:19:13 > 0:19:16It's like trying to dress the biggest toddler ever.

0:19:22 > 0:19:23Oh, my God.

0:19:27 > 0:19:30Come on, girl, you're nearly there.

0:19:30 > 0:19:31OK, everybody - that's it.

0:19:33 > 0:19:35Look at these bad boys!

0:19:40 > 0:19:43Eight pairs of stretch leggings in just 90 minutes,

0:19:43 > 0:19:45but what will the judges think?

0:19:45 > 0:19:47Cerina, bring your legs forward.

0:19:51 > 0:19:54I'm a little bit worried about your girl

0:19:54 > 0:19:56and the tightness of her leggings.

0:19:56 > 0:20:00Well, the fabric's stretched out and it's almost see-through.

0:20:00 > 0:20:02Your waistband is well executed.

0:20:02 > 0:20:08Sits very flatly to the waist and a nice even row of double stitching.

0:20:13 > 0:20:16How's Mrs Shiny Legs round the back?

0:20:17 > 0:20:21What we've got here, unfortunately, is a bit of a saggy bottom.

0:20:21 > 0:20:24It's in complete contrast to the front, which looks great, doesn't it?

0:20:24 > 0:20:27You did pick a particularly tricky fabric.

0:20:27 > 0:20:31The waistband, again, a little bit of bagginess.

0:20:31 > 0:20:34We've got some twisting where the elastic isn't flat.

0:20:40 > 0:20:43I love this fabric, I could see it on the dance floor.

0:20:43 > 0:20:47You've done a really good job of making it run round the body.

0:20:47 > 0:20:50A little bit of bagging round there, but minor detail.

0:20:50 > 0:20:54There's a little bit of excess just sitting on the top of that elastic.

0:20:54 > 0:20:57There are fit issues but a very good use of pattern.

0:21:01 > 0:21:05She's got one cheek that fits and the other one doesn't.

0:21:05 > 0:21:09Looking at this side, it's perfect, and the other side...

0:21:09 > 0:21:11And it wasn't too bad until I started fiddling with it as well.

0:21:11 > 0:21:13Interesting.

0:21:15 > 0:21:18The waistband is nowhere near horizontal.

0:21:18 > 0:21:20It's running right up at the back.

0:21:20 > 0:21:23If we do push it down so it's sitting horizontal,

0:21:23 > 0:21:25we end up with a great big gather at the back.

0:21:25 > 0:21:27And she's also got a saggy bottom.

0:21:27 > 0:21:28She has.

0:21:28 > 0:21:31- Not the best thing we've seen from you so far, I'm afraid.- No. No.

0:21:37 > 0:21:41I think, overall, the fit is good. The right amount of give.

0:21:41 > 0:21:43The waistband is very flat

0:21:43 > 0:21:47and the twin-needle stitching is very even.

0:21:47 > 0:21:49The seams, the seams look very neat.

0:21:49 > 0:21:52And the twin-needle hem is looking good.

0:21:52 > 0:21:54And the pattern is running quite nicely straight,

0:21:54 > 0:21:57it's not twisting around the leg at all.

0:22:05 > 0:22:07- Um...- Yes...

0:22:07 > 0:22:09LAUGHTER

0:22:09 > 0:22:11- Yeah, we don't need to say it, do we?- We had a chat.

0:22:11 > 0:22:14We had a chat with the model and she wanted more room, so...

0:22:14 > 0:22:17She was hoping to carry her sandwiches down the back

0:22:17 > 0:22:19of her trousers.

0:22:19 > 0:22:21You've also added a pocket for us.

0:22:21 > 0:22:24- It's really not at all neat. - It really doesn't add anything.

0:22:24 > 0:22:26I like a cheeky pocket myself.

0:22:26 > 0:22:28Well, you don't need one with all this!

0:22:35 > 0:22:39Just a tiny bit of give behind here, but on the whole, a good fit.

0:22:39 > 0:22:41A nice flat band around the waist

0:22:41 > 0:22:45and your twin-needle stitching is nice and flat.

0:22:45 > 0:22:48My only comment is that the waist is a bit low down.

0:22:48 > 0:22:51- It's fashion!- Yes, I wouldn't want to wear mine that low down.

0:22:51 > 0:22:54May favours the Simon Cowell approach to leggings.

0:22:57 > 0:23:01Patrick and May will now rank the leggings, from worst to best.

0:23:01 > 0:23:04Eighth place, sadly, Jenni. Not a great fit,

0:23:04 > 0:23:06and I think you struggled with one or two of the techniques there.

0:23:06 > 0:23:11Seventh place, it's Heather. A few issues with wobbly waistbands.

0:23:11 > 0:23:14Julie's sixth, Chinelo's fifth,

0:23:14 > 0:23:16Tamara's fourth, and Cerina is third.

0:23:17 > 0:23:19In second place, David!

0:23:19 > 0:23:23Very well executed, good fit, nice and neat overall.

0:23:23 > 0:23:25In first place, Lynda!

0:23:25 > 0:23:29Your waistband is lovely and flat, no ripples, really good fit!

0:23:29 > 0:23:31Well done!

0:23:34 > 0:23:37So well done to all of you, especially Lynda!

0:23:37 > 0:23:41Go, lie down, maybe put the leggings on! If you want to!

0:23:45 > 0:23:48I had a text off both of my daughters, telling me

0:23:48 > 0:23:50they wanted me to come first today.

0:23:50 > 0:23:54So I think they're both going to be very, very pleased and proud of me.

0:23:54 > 0:23:57My confidence has grown. Yeah, I'm hopefully climbing that ladder!

0:23:57 > 0:24:00Quite disappointed finishing sixth because the fabric I used was

0:24:00 > 0:24:04probably ten times more difficult than anybody else's fabric.

0:24:04 > 0:24:07Cheeky pocket didn't work. Hey, but I got some mustard slacks.

0:24:07 > 0:24:11Slack being the operative word, but, hey, I like a good baggy bum!

0:24:13 > 0:24:15Now it's time for our alteration challenge.

0:24:15 > 0:24:18This is when Patrick and May want to see what the sewers can do

0:24:18 > 0:24:21with something they could have found on the high street.

0:24:21 > 0:24:24It's pretty basic, but I can tell you, it stretches.

0:24:26 > 0:24:28This week, we've given you...

0:24:30 > 0:24:33..a big, baggy, stretchy T-shirt.

0:24:33 > 0:24:37Change the armholes, change the necks, change the sleeves.

0:24:37 > 0:24:40Just make this really boring garment really exciting.

0:24:40 > 0:24:44You have an hour and a half. Good luck! Go!

0:24:46 > 0:24:50A stretch T-shirt like this can be found on any high street.

0:24:50 > 0:24:52I'm going to try and do something dramatic

0:24:52 > 0:24:53cos normally I'm quite boring.

0:24:53 > 0:24:57For the next 90 minutes, the sewers are completely on their own.

0:24:57 > 0:24:59Excuse me, I'm just coming back for that.

0:24:59 > 0:25:01No! That's mine! Get off!

0:25:01 > 0:25:03- You can have some of it, if you want.- No.

0:25:03 > 0:25:04There are no rules,

0:25:04 > 0:25:07but so they can surprise the judges with their creativity,

0:25:07 > 0:25:11the judges won't be in the sewing room to see them work.

0:25:11 > 0:25:14Oh, God, here we go. I'm rubbish at this.

0:25:15 > 0:25:18- This is a huge expanse of material, here.- Mm.

0:25:18 > 0:25:21The most obvious thing to do is to chop it right down,

0:25:21 > 0:25:24and sort of drastically reshape it. We can do a lot with the shoulders,

0:25:24 > 0:25:26we can do a lot with the shape of this neck.

0:25:26 > 0:25:30You know, you could extend it and actually make a dress out of what we've got here.

0:25:30 > 0:25:32If they're taking fabrics from the haberdashery,

0:25:32 > 0:25:35they've got to be careful that when we combine two fabrics...

0:25:35 > 0:25:37I mean, this one's really stretchy, isn't it?

0:25:37 > 0:25:40And this one is really firm.

0:25:40 > 0:25:44Immediately we put those two together, you've got completely different mobility, there.

0:25:44 > 0:25:47So therefore, if they're embellishing, edging, applying,

0:25:47 > 0:25:51they need to make sure that this fabric doesn't stretch this one out of shape.

0:25:51 > 0:25:53I'm going to make it into a ladies' top

0:25:53 > 0:25:56and put a bit of ruching around the neck.

0:25:56 > 0:25:58I'll make it a low back, where that V is there.

0:25:58 > 0:26:00And then I'll make a ruffle out of that.

0:26:00 > 0:26:02It's lovely, this!

0:26:02 > 0:26:03They've only had two minutes.

0:26:03 > 0:26:06You've already turned this into the best top I've ever seen.

0:26:06 > 0:26:08This is the sleeve. This is the neck.

0:26:08 > 0:26:10Is that what you're going to do?!

0:26:10 > 0:26:13Yes, either top or dress. I haven't decided yet.

0:26:13 > 0:26:17I'm making a halter neck, plunge backline, draped through the back, with a frilly collar.

0:26:17 > 0:26:21I'm going to do a crazy V neck, and it's going to be a big zip.

0:26:21 > 0:26:24Get rid of the sleeves, don't need those.

0:26:24 > 0:26:27Another zip. Ooh, good idea.

0:26:27 > 0:26:29I'm going to slash the back and plait it,

0:26:29 > 0:26:34and then finish the armhole and neckline with...

0:26:34 > 0:26:36- Ooh!- ..open zipped.

0:26:36 > 0:26:40- Look, I have a zip trim! - Going with your theme, see.- Come on.

0:26:42 > 0:26:44I'm going to make a child's dancing dress.

0:26:44 > 0:26:47So I'm going to have some pink on it.

0:26:47 > 0:26:50And some more pink. It might be over ambitious

0:26:50 > 0:26:51cos I'm doing a lot of re-cutting,

0:26:51 > 0:26:55but I was really surprised how easy the overlocker was to use,

0:26:55 > 0:26:56and the double needle, as well,

0:26:56 > 0:26:59so I'm hoping I can just make the most of that.

0:26:59 > 0:27:01- I'm making an asymmetric maxi dress. - Are you?!- Yeah.

0:27:01 > 0:27:04This is the skirt of my maxi dress. This is the top of it.

0:27:04 > 0:27:07You have done so well on these challenges.

0:27:07 > 0:27:10But you know, when they're going "Ah, one and two, they're about the same..."

0:27:10 > 0:27:14- I know.- You must want to be number one.- Yeah, my eye's on Tamara today.

0:27:14 > 0:27:15Yes!

0:27:15 > 0:27:18Sewers, you have one hour left.

0:27:18 > 0:27:20It's not that I dislike the challenge,

0:27:20 > 0:27:22it's that I dislike the amount of time.

0:27:22 > 0:27:24I got the inspiration from the collar

0:27:24 > 0:27:27because it just slips over your head nicely,

0:27:27 > 0:27:30so I can use it as an anchor point for the garment.

0:27:30 > 0:27:32- What are you doing?- Pass. I was hoping you could tell me!

0:27:32 > 0:27:34Do you not know?

0:27:34 > 0:27:36I've put it back to front, and fitted it.

0:27:36 > 0:27:38I'm making it up as I go along.

0:27:38 > 0:27:40- No! We can't do that!- We can!

0:27:40 > 0:27:43OK, this is the tricky bit now - this is where I'm going to slash it.

0:27:43 > 0:27:45I've not done this before, but I've seen it,

0:27:45 > 0:27:48so I think I know how it's going to work.

0:27:48 > 0:27:51Pull. That would go there.

0:27:53 > 0:27:55That would go there.

0:27:55 > 0:27:57That would go there.

0:27:57 > 0:27:59And finally, that would go there.

0:27:59 > 0:28:00And that's the back.

0:28:00 > 0:28:05Don't want a baggy bottom. SHE LAUGHS

0:28:05 > 0:28:07Can't be showing your knickers, can you?

0:28:07 > 0:28:10I'm using stretch bias binding because the fabric is stretchy,

0:28:10 > 0:28:12so then you need one that's going to sit with it.

0:28:12 > 0:28:15I'm making some binding, and then I'm going to trim the neck with it.

0:28:15 > 0:28:19They always say I'm not dramatic enough, so I want to be more dramatic.

0:28:19 > 0:28:21That's going to look nice.

0:28:21 > 0:28:25Everyone, you have half an hour left for your transformations.

0:28:25 > 0:28:31Basically popping some binding into the sleeve hole which I cut out.

0:28:31 > 0:28:35Just to try and neaten it, and give it a bit of finish.

0:28:35 > 0:28:37I'm just going to bind round the armholes.

0:28:37 > 0:28:40I'm attaching the skirt to the bodice.

0:28:40 > 0:28:42This is a stretch fabric as well, actually.

0:28:42 > 0:28:45I don't even want to look. Does she know what I'm doing?

0:28:48 > 0:28:50CHINELO LAUGHS

0:28:50 > 0:28:52I'm going to make a tube skirt.

0:28:52 > 0:28:56So it's going to have quite a blouson effect on the top half of the skirt.

0:28:56 > 0:28:59On the bottom it'll be like a little tube mini-skirt.

0:28:59 > 0:29:01Flouncy! What is that?

0:29:01 > 0:29:05That's going to be a ruche with a little, a little...

0:29:05 > 0:29:08A ruche? You are pure filth, and I mean that in a brilliant way.

0:29:08 > 0:29:09I love ya!

0:29:09 > 0:29:13I'm just in the process of doing a double layer of stitching on my hems

0:29:13 > 0:29:15so my zip doesn't roll.

0:29:15 > 0:29:18As you can see, my hem's sitting flat now against the garment,

0:29:18 > 0:29:20whereas if I didn't do that it would kick out.

0:29:20 > 0:29:22Let me just have a look at that specimen.

0:29:22 > 0:29:29It's a dress, and depending on how risque you wish to be...

0:29:29 > 0:29:30I think, instead of doing darts,

0:29:30 > 0:29:33I might put some zips in the back,

0:29:33 > 0:29:35- which can be zipped up...- Yeah. - ..And then turned into darts.

0:29:35 > 0:29:37OK. Brilliant.

0:29:39 > 0:29:42Sewers, you've got five minutes left,

0:29:42 > 0:29:44and then I'm bringing the scary people in.

0:29:44 > 0:29:46Oh, look at that!

0:29:46 > 0:29:48I'm just trying to put a bit of embellishment on it,

0:29:48 > 0:29:50just to finish it off.

0:29:50 > 0:29:52I wanted to put shoulder pads in, but we don't have those.

0:29:52 > 0:29:56So I'm just giving it a little lift with a pleat in the sleeve.

0:29:56 > 0:29:57I'm fairly happy. I've got some drapery.

0:29:57 > 0:30:00Hopefully it shows a bit of imagination.

0:30:00 > 0:30:03It's going to be very glamorous with all these sequins on.

0:30:03 > 0:30:06Might make a little belt out of that, as well.

0:30:06 > 0:30:07It might not do up!

0:30:07 > 0:30:09Will that go? Yes, it will.

0:30:10 > 0:30:12Breathe in!

0:30:12 > 0:30:14Yes, it does!

0:30:15 > 0:30:17You have 40 seconds.

0:30:28 > 0:30:30Aw!

0:30:33 > 0:30:37OK, that's it! Time! David, don't touch it!

0:30:37 > 0:30:39This is very sexy stuff, isn't it?

0:30:39 > 0:30:41This is my inner secret woman coming out. JULIE LAUGHS

0:30:43 > 0:30:47Please bring your mannequins to the front and then we'll jumble them up.

0:30:47 > 0:30:50# I can't tell a waltz from a tango

0:30:50 > 0:30:54# I never know what my feet Are gonna do... #

0:30:54 > 0:30:58May and Patrick will now have absolutely no idea whose alterations are whose.

0:30:58 > 0:31:02These poor people started with this.

0:31:02 > 0:31:06Once again, I think you've pulled something spectacular out of the bag.

0:31:06 > 0:31:07- May?- I'm speechless.

0:31:10 > 0:31:12It's a very dramatic change.

0:31:12 > 0:31:15Pleats, gathers, darts.

0:31:15 > 0:31:18It's stretched. She's got one area which is... Ooh!

0:31:18 > 0:31:20Trying to climb out.

0:31:25 > 0:31:27This is like somebody's shrunken Madonna

0:31:27 > 0:31:29and thrown her on a mannequin.

0:31:29 > 0:31:31I'd want to go out in that.

0:31:31 > 0:31:34And it's a really great use of a couple of simple bits of trim.

0:31:34 > 0:31:37I think it's just a really good understanding of what you can do

0:31:37 > 0:31:39- with a piece of clothing.- Yes.

0:31:43 > 0:31:46Huge scoop taken out of the back.

0:31:46 > 0:31:47And combining different fabrics.

0:31:47 > 0:31:50Lovely colour combination. Very fresh.

0:31:50 > 0:31:52It's just drooped out of shape.

0:31:52 > 0:31:55This V at the front needed to have been a little more cleanly executed.

0:32:00 > 0:32:04Nice simple combination of colours, well chosen.

0:32:04 > 0:32:06- A really good transformation, isn't it?- Yep.

0:32:06 > 0:32:09The fit is really good, and we've got contrasting fabric

0:32:09 > 0:32:11going round these edges, and it would've been

0:32:11 > 0:32:14so easy to have stretched them completely out of shape.

0:32:14 > 0:32:16- And I love the ruching at the sides.- Yep.

0:32:20 > 0:32:24This one, outwardly, looks one of the simpler ones,

0:32:24 > 0:32:28but actually, only because I think it's just been executed so very well.

0:32:28 > 0:32:31The skirt looks even. It's falling well.

0:32:31 > 0:32:33I mean, we've got a transformation of the neckline.

0:32:33 > 0:32:36The shoulders have been reduced, the sleeves have been re-introduced.

0:32:36 > 0:32:38Look how well that has been joined.

0:32:38 > 0:32:42- Absolutely.- Two fabrics, we could've had this completely stretched out of shape.

0:32:42 > 0:32:43If we look at the side seam,

0:32:43 > 0:32:46I mean, it's absolutely perfectly lined up.

0:32:46 > 0:32:47And it's straight.

0:32:51 > 0:32:55An interesting idea to use zips to give shape.

0:32:55 > 0:32:58Sadly, the zip has stretched the front of the jersey.

0:32:58 > 0:33:02It's ambitious, but I think it's just let down in the execution.

0:33:06 > 0:33:08- A very interesting idea.- Yes.

0:33:08 > 0:33:12However, we've got a bit of stretching on the armholes.

0:33:12 > 0:33:15It would've been nicer to see these a little more evenly distributed.

0:33:15 > 0:33:17All of this fullness here, it's very dramatic,

0:33:17 > 0:33:19it's just slightly let down by a few areas

0:33:19 > 0:33:22where it's not sewn quite as well as it could be.

0:33:27 > 0:33:30Very dramatic, both front and back.

0:33:30 > 0:33:33For it to work and hold together and still hold the shape

0:33:33 > 0:33:34- is a good effect.- Yep.

0:33:34 > 0:33:37We've also got our rigid zip and our stretchy fabric,

0:33:37 > 0:33:41but the actual T-shirt part of this isn't stretched out of shape.

0:33:42 > 0:33:45May and Patrick will now rearrange the transformed T-shirts

0:33:45 > 0:33:49into order, and reveal which has shown the most creative ambition

0:33:49 > 0:33:51and the best technical execution.

0:33:52 > 0:33:55- So, you're happy with this order. - Yes.

0:33:55 > 0:33:58Please could the creator of number eight come up?

0:33:58 > 0:34:01Love the idea of using zips, David,

0:34:01 > 0:34:04however, in putting it on your top, you stretched it out of shape.

0:34:04 > 0:34:07Could the creator of this one come up?

0:34:07 > 0:34:10Sadly, the armholes are stretched right out of shape.

0:34:11 > 0:34:14Lynda is sixth, Tamara fifth,

0:34:14 > 0:34:18Jenni fourth, and Heather is third.

0:34:18 > 0:34:21All right, we're down to the last two.

0:34:23 > 0:34:27OK, the maxi dress creator, please come forward.

0:34:27 > 0:34:30- Chinelo!- Ah, once again - so near, but yet so far.

0:34:30 > 0:34:34Very close-run thing. The only reason that you didn't come first

0:34:34 > 0:34:37was because that was a much more dramatic transformation.

0:34:37 > 0:34:40- Therefore, well done, Cerina! - APPLAUSE

0:34:42 > 0:34:44On sheer, kind of, joyous transformation,

0:34:44 > 0:34:48good old mini-Madge has definitely brought a smile to all of our faces.

0:34:48 > 0:34:51That just goes to show what you can do with a big T-shirt.

0:34:51 > 0:34:53Thank you so much for today.

0:34:53 > 0:34:56Go home, put on stretchy fabric, do stretchy dance moves

0:34:56 > 0:34:59and we'll see you tomorrow for the big stretch challenge.

0:35:01 > 0:35:02I can't believe it!

0:35:02 > 0:35:05But when I saw Patrick said he'd quite like to wear it himself,

0:35:05 > 0:35:08I thought, "Ooh, maybe it's a winner!"

0:35:08 > 0:35:11When Patrick said "nearly", I was like, "Oh, my gosh!" The curse of the second.

0:35:11 > 0:35:14I need to really break through that second barrier

0:35:14 > 0:35:16and get to the first!

0:35:16 > 0:35:19I thought the judges were a little bit harsh.

0:35:19 > 0:35:21I thought I'd do better than I did.

0:35:21 > 0:35:25It is official that I am rubbish in the alteration challenge!

0:35:25 > 0:35:28If I'd had the option to take it out and not present it,

0:35:28 > 0:35:29I think I would've done.

0:35:32 > 0:35:38# If I had a needle and thread Tell you what I'd do... #

0:35:38 > 0:35:42There's one challenge remaining before one sewer will be awarded garment of the week,

0:35:42 > 0:35:45and another will be asked to leave the Sewing Bee.

0:35:45 > 0:35:48I'm really worried about Julie, Jenni and David.

0:35:50 > 0:35:53Jenni didn't really have a clue how to deal with jersey

0:35:53 > 0:35:56because she did not fit her leggings.

0:35:56 > 0:35:58In Julie's alteration it was a poor choice of fabrics

0:35:58 > 0:36:00and it was pretty tattily executed.

0:36:00 > 0:36:05Both of her garments didn't show the best use of a stretch fabric.

0:36:05 > 0:36:07David managed the leggings better than most, I think.

0:36:07 > 0:36:09But then his alteration was disappointing.

0:36:09 > 0:36:11Hopefully, with my boy hat on,

0:36:11 > 0:36:15he's going to pull something decent out the bag.

0:36:15 > 0:36:17In this final challenge, the mannequins are gone

0:36:17 > 0:36:19and the models have returned.

0:36:19 > 0:36:20Lovely to see you again!

0:36:20 > 0:36:22Good morning, everybody. Are we feeling stretchy?

0:36:22 > 0:36:24- ALL: Yes!- Excellent.

0:36:24 > 0:36:29The judges would love you to make a beautiful stretch wrap dress.

0:36:29 > 0:36:35You've got five hours. Good luck. Your time starts now.

0:36:36 > 0:36:39This is the one challenge the sewers have been allowed to practise.

0:36:39 > 0:36:42They're already chosen their pattern and stretch fabric.

0:36:42 > 0:36:47Now they have to fit the wrap dress that they've practised to the model for the first time.

0:36:47 > 0:36:50I want to see them making the best use of a stretch fabric

0:36:50 > 0:36:53to create something that's elegant and figure hugging.

0:36:53 > 0:36:55Beautifully balanced, well fitted.

0:36:55 > 0:36:57I would like to see some wonderful edges.

0:36:57 > 0:37:00It's so easy in a wrap, because it's across the body,

0:37:00 > 0:37:03to stretch it completely out of the shape.

0:37:03 > 0:37:04They've got to be really careful.

0:37:04 > 0:37:07I like to think of this competition as extreme sewing,

0:37:07 > 0:37:11like you've been thrown out of a plane, skydiving, with a sewing machine.

0:37:17 > 0:37:20I'm going for big '70s flare.

0:37:20 > 0:37:22With the big wizard sleeves.

0:37:22 > 0:37:25- Yeah.- It's a nice firm jersey, though, isn't it? It's not too slippery.

0:37:25 > 0:37:26No, no - it's nice to work with.

0:37:26 > 0:37:30If you fit it nicely and execute it well, all should be marvellous.

0:37:30 > 0:37:31Fingers crossed.

0:37:31 > 0:37:34I chose this because it's very loud.

0:37:34 > 0:37:37It's just a bit bolshie, I suppose. I like it.

0:37:45 > 0:37:47- Have you made this before? - I made it once for my wife.

0:37:47 > 0:37:49And how did it go?

0:37:49 > 0:37:52Not too great - she complained about the fact it made her look fat,

0:37:52 > 0:37:57because I should have taken into consideration her larger hips.

0:37:57 > 0:37:59OK, you know she might be watching this?

0:37:59 > 0:38:01When I show her this, I'll hide all the scissors.

0:38:01 > 0:38:03Yeah, I would!

0:38:03 > 0:38:06The fabric's really stretchy, so, um...

0:38:06 > 0:38:10Yeah, it's stretchier than the fabric I used for the leggings.

0:38:16 > 0:38:19I've already measured my model, I've just got to make sure

0:38:19 > 0:38:22I get the pattern placed in the right places, so that you don't

0:38:22 > 0:38:25suddenly find you've not got enough fabric for a sleeve.

0:38:25 > 0:38:30So, that's why it's quite important to follow the plans they set out.

0:38:30 > 0:38:33As usual, Chinelo's making her own plans.

0:38:33 > 0:38:35You have your model glued to the side.

0:38:35 > 0:38:37I have to take all the measurements,

0:38:37 > 0:38:40I need every little contour so I can't just do

0:38:40 > 0:38:42the waist, bust, hips - it has to be every little thing.

0:38:42 > 0:38:44I get a good fit that way.

0:38:52 > 0:38:53I just absolutely love velvet,

0:38:53 > 0:38:56and I thought it would show a bit of skill working with the pile.

0:38:56 > 0:38:59What have you to consider when working with the pile on velvet?

0:38:59 > 0:39:01I'm using it in one direction,

0:39:01 > 0:39:03so, basically, it's all going to shine the same way.

0:39:03 > 0:39:05Brilliant. Brilliant.

0:39:05 > 0:39:08I haven't done very well this week, so I can't really relax.

0:39:08 > 0:39:11I would love my mum to be here now, with a nice cup of tea.

0:39:17 > 0:39:21The only thing I'm concerned about is, because it's very stretchy fabric,

0:39:21 > 0:39:24the dress will pull the bodice down and stretch it that way.

0:39:25 > 0:39:27This is the pin dog.

0:39:27 > 0:39:30What's he called? Hasn't he got a name? Lancelot? Percival?

0:39:30 > 0:39:33- Horatio!- Horatio!

0:39:33 > 0:39:36About ten pieces in the wrap dress to make.

0:39:36 > 0:39:38They're all cut out and ready to go.

0:39:38 > 0:39:41Construction begins with the bodice of the wrap dress.

0:39:41 > 0:39:44I'm just threading my machine up and then I'll sew a little bit of fabric

0:39:44 > 0:39:47to make sure it's the right needle, to see if it's sewing nice.

0:39:47 > 0:39:50It's an area of the dress where the stretch fabric must hug the body...

0:39:50 > 0:39:53You need to make sure you're not falling out everywhere,

0:39:53 > 0:39:55so hopefully I've got that one covered.

0:39:55 > 0:39:58- ..and mustn't sag. - That looks all right.

0:39:58 > 0:40:00I actually don't like wrap dresses.

0:40:00 > 0:40:03I hate them even more now!

0:40:03 > 0:40:06Heather's playing it safe...

0:40:10 > 0:40:12It's quite a nice hefty jersey, isn't it?

0:40:12 > 0:40:15And this has got a lovely drape on it.

0:40:15 > 0:40:19It's going to be more classically tailored. A simpler line, basically.

0:40:19 > 0:40:20Yeah, it's just more to my taste.

0:40:23 > 0:40:26Most of the sewers have chosen to begin construction

0:40:26 > 0:40:28on their sewing machines.

0:40:33 > 0:40:36But some have chosen the overlocker.

0:40:36 > 0:40:39With this machine,

0:40:39 > 0:40:41it should mean I'm only going up each seam the once.

0:40:41 > 0:40:44Whereas if I was using a sewing machine,

0:40:44 > 0:40:47I'd have to do three lots on each seam,

0:40:47 > 0:40:49I'd have to do the seam,

0:40:49 > 0:40:53and then neatening either side. So this should save me time.

0:40:53 > 0:40:55I'm most worried about the fit,

0:40:55 > 0:40:59because that actually chops off the excess as you're sewing it.

0:40:59 > 0:41:04So if it doesn't fit, if it's too small, that's it.

0:41:04 > 0:41:07Lynda is making a classic wrap-fronted dress...

0:41:11 > 0:41:14I've just found out that I'm a coward.

0:41:14 > 0:41:18Because I've erred on the side of caution

0:41:18 > 0:41:22and gone back to using the stretched stitch on the normal sewing machine

0:41:22 > 0:41:24rather than the overlocker,

0:41:24 > 0:41:29because I think if I cut the seam off and it's too small, I've had it.

0:41:35 > 0:41:37Mmm! That's OK!

0:41:41 > 0:41:42How long have we had?

0:41:42 > 0:41:46- 9.30, 10.30... So we've had two hours.- OK.

0:41:46 > 0:41:50A wrap dress has particularly long exposed edges.

0:41:50 > 0:41:53- So it goes that way, does it? - Usually, yeah.

0:41:53 > 0:41:54Along the wrap itself,

0:41:54 > 0:41:56as it stretches across the front of the body...

0:41:56 > 0:41:58The front, right in your face,

0:41:58 > 0:42:01so it's worth undoing and doing it again.

0:42:01 > 0:42:03..and around the neckline.

0:42:03 > 0:42:06With stretch fabric, the longer an exposed edge,

0:42:06 > 0:42:08the more unstable the fabric can become...

0:42:08 > 0:42:11SHE WINCES

0:42:11 > 0:42:13..ruining the shape of the dress.

0:42:13 > 0:42:16Stabilising is when you put a slightly firmer fabric

0:42:16 > 0:42:20behind a stretchy fabric to stop it from pulling out of shape.

0:42:20 > 0:42:23On a shoulder line, if you don't have a stabiliser,

0:42:23 > 0:42:25it'll stretch and stretch and stretch.

0:42:25 > 0:42:27Whereas if you put a little bit of tape in it,

0:42:27 > 0:42:30it'll stop it from going right out of shape.

0:42:31 > 0:42:35David's attempting to stabilise his neck line with facing -

0:42:35 > 0:42:38a supporting fabric that's sewn onto the reverse of the garment.

0:42:38 > 0:42:42We're doing a facing that goes round the neck. This is the neck bit here,

0:42:42 > 0:42:45and you don't want to stretch that because it sits comfortably on the neck,

0:42:45 > 0:42:48whereas if it was stretched, it would pull all the time.

0:42:48 > 0:42:52Tamara aims to stabilise her edges with her own bias binding.

0:42:52 > 0:42:54What I'll do is, I'll fold it back on itself,

0:42:54 > 0:42:58so we've got a nice red line that goes along the outside of the dress.

0:42:58 > 0:42:59Ooh!

0:42:59 > 0:43:02As well as trying to stabilise her edges,

0:43:02 > 0:43:05Julie is the only sewer attaching a separate collar.

0:43:05 > 0:43:08Quite a different stretch to your garment.

0:43:08 > 0:43:10Yeah, it's not a really heavy jersey.

0:43:10 > 0:43:13- Will it have enough substance to take the weight of that collar?- Yeah.

0:43:13 > 0:43:17Julie's adapted a pattern for a vintage dressing gown...

0:43:21 > 0:43:25She's got six layers where the collar joins the garment

0:43:25 > 0:43:26with the facings.

0:43:26 > 0:43:29So therefore, there's a lot of bulk around the neckline

0:43:29 > 0:43:32which could stretch things out of shape.

0:43:32 > 0:43:36It takes a bit of concentration cos it's stretching all the time,

0:43:36 > 0:43:38so you've got to really concentrate.

0:43:39 > 0:43:4190 minutes remaining.

0:43:41 > 0:43:44So, I'm going to go for little cap sleeves,

0:43:44 > 0:43:46cos I think it just jazzes it up a little bit.

0:43:46 > 0:43:47I'm just setting in my sleeves.

0:43:47 > 0:43:51There is an ease stitch on the top to give me a little bit of gather on the shoulders.

0:43:51 > 0:43:54That might just give it a little bit of detail.

0:43:56 > 0:44:01I'm just attaching the skirt to the top, the bodice.

0:44:01 > 0:44:05Because it's so stretchy it could lose some of the shape on the waistband.

0:44:05 > 0:44:09So I think I might use some bias binding inside,

0:44:09 > 0:44:12just to make it a little bit more rigid, less stretchy.

0:44:12 > 0:44:14(Where is it? Where is it?)

0:44:14 > 0:44:17- Both Cerina... - All looks spotty!

0:44:17 > 0:44:20..and Chinelo are planning to gather their dresses at the waist.

0:44:20 > 0:44:24Usually I wouldn't pin, I'd just go, but I'm having to pin so that

0:44:24 > 0:44:28it doesn't stretch out of place and look twisted when she's got it on.

0:44:28 > 0:44:31I'm sure May and Patrick are going to be looking for that.

0:44:31 > 0:44:34I'm just trimming the seam line

0:44:34 > 0:44:38that goes between the bodice and the skirt.

0:44:38 > 0:44:42Heather's hoping to keep the waistline of her dress a little simpler.

0:44:42 > 0:44:43Oh, my God!

0:44:44 > 0:44:49I have just made a massive, massive mistake.

0:44:50 > 0:44:53This is going to be a total disaster.

0:44:53 > 0:44:56Heather has sewn her skirt on inside out

0:44:56 > 0:44:59I'm basically stuffed now, that's it.

0:44:59 > 0:45:03Heather did her waist seam on the outside.

0:45:03 > 0:45:05- So the skirt was attached the wrong way round.- Oh, I see.

0:45:05 > 0:45:09She's used the stretched stitch, which is a really intense stitch,

0:45:09 > 0:45:12and it takes forever to take out.

0:45:12 > 0:45:14This is just a nightmare.

0:45:14 > 0:45:16Why isn't this coming apart?

0:45:16 > 0:45:19Exactly, why isn't this coming apart? Because it's triple stitch.

0:45:19 > 0:45:21I don't know what to do.

0:45:23 > 0:45:26Sewers, you've got one hour left.

0:45:26 > 0:45:27Really?!

0:45:28 > 0:45:31I'm just making a slight adjustment in the back.

0:45:31 > 0:45:33I'm not quite happy with how it's falling.

0:45:33 > 0:45:36She's got a bit of a hollow back, so what I'm doing is taking some pleats,

0:45:36 > 0:45:38so that it'll just make it fit nicer.

0:45:38 > 0:45:42- There's absolutely no way you're going to unpick that in time. - No, there isn't.

0:45:42 > 0:45:46- Just take a deep breath and don't panic, Captain Mainwaring.- No, sir!

0:45:46 > 0:45:48It's not sitting right at the back, look.

0:45:48 > 0:45:52I need to make it like that.

0:45:52 > 0:45:54- Yeah?- Yes.

0:45:54 > 0:45:58I need to take more in here. Just in the waist.

0:45:58 > 0:46:00Oh, my God! It feels so nice and snug.

0:46:00 > 0:46:03When I first started I took all the measurements I needed,

0:46:03 > 0:46:07translated that onto my fabric so I knew it would fit perfectly.

0:46:07 > 0:46:11Heather has made a decision about her waist seam.

0:46:11 > 0:46:15I am chopping right. Right side,

0:46:17 > 0:46:20Right bloody side! OK.

0:46:21 > 0:46:24Now I'm going to redo it and let's see if

0:46:24 > 0:46:27we can get this show on the road again. Disaster!

0:46:30 > 0:46:33I got this fabric and I liked the little patterns that they had on it,

0:46:33 > 0:46:36so I've trimmed that out and I'm just using it to decorate the shoulder.

0:46:36 > 0:46:40The hardest thing were the collar, and I've got that in, so that is a relief.

0:46:40 > 0:46:43All I've got to do now is decide what type of hem.

0:46:43 > 0:46:47I'm just going to do a basic, overlock the hem and turn it up.

0:46:47 > 0:46:51I have no idea how much time we have left.

0:46:51 > 0:46:53- 20 minutes...- 20 minutes?! - ..I think.

0:46:53 > 0:46:55Jesus! Proper panic.

0:46:58 > 0:47:00OK, I'm going to attach that all the way round, right now.

0:47:00 > 0:47:02I'm not even going to bother to pin.

0:47:04 > 0:47:07I just need to make an adjustment at the neckline.

0:47:07 > 0:47:10Cos I've put binding around the neck, it's come quite loose.

0:47:10 > 0:47:13I'm using a twin needle, the same as we used yesterday,

0:47:13 > 0:47:18to get a double row of stitching on the bottom of the hem and the cuff.

0:47:18 > 0:47:20I've got to get one more of the ribbons on.

0:47:20 > 0:47:23That, in effect, makes it possible to wrap the dress.

0:47:23 > 0:47:27I feel much happier with that now, much better now.

0:47:27 > 0:47:29I just want to take it in a little bit more because

0:47:29 > 0:47:33although it's a loose jersey fabric, I want it to be nice and fitted

0:47:33 > 0:47:35and snug and, you know, look like it was made for her

0:47:35 > 0:47:37and not somebody else.

0:47:45 > 0:47:48I'm now attaching the bias binding round the curve of the neck,

0:47:48 > 0:47:51so now I need to concentrate a bit.

0:47:51 > 0:47:54- You've got five minutes everyone, five minutes.- Ahhh!

0:47:56 > 0:47:57I'm finished.

0:48:01 > 0:48:05I'm just putting the bias binding on the sleeve just to finish the garment off.

0:48:05 > 0:48:08- Are you all right, Heather, darling? - I want to drown in a bucket of gin!

0:48:08 > 0:48:12OK, I can organise that for you. I'll get you a snorkel.

0:48:12 > 0:48:15I'm quite pleased with the way they're sitting,

0:48:15 > 0:48:17considering I haven't used any bias binding or anything.

0:48:21 > 0:48:25Just doing a little bit round the back now and it's actually finished.

0:48:27 > 0:48:30One minute left, 60 seconds!

0:48:30 > 0:48:31Ooh! Might be long enough!

0:48:33 > 0:48:36David, I'm not one to panic, but I tell you - the time is now.

0:48:36 > 0:48:38Go get naked behind the thing.

0:48:38 > 0:48:40- Is that your usual.... - That's my normal chat-up line!

0:48:44 > 0:48:46I'll just turn my back for a minute,

0:48:46 > 0:48:48hurry up!

0:48:48 > 0:48:51I've got no idea whether it's enough to impress the judges.

0:48:51 > 0:48:52Come on, Heidi!

0:48:52 > 0:48:57Just grateful that I've actually got something to put on my model, to be fair.

0:48:57 > 0:49:00Shoulders, seam, seam.

0:49:07 > 0:49:08OK.

0:49:08 > 0:49:10OK, here we go, here we go!

0:49:10 > 0:49:13All right, that's it! Time is absolutely up.

0:49:13 > 0:49:17Have a lie down, definitely. God!

0:49:19 > 0:49:22Unbelievable. That was too close.

0:49:22 > 0:49:26Can I just wipe the mascara and sweat from under my eyes, please?

0:49:32 > 0:49:37# Hold me close And hold me tight... #

0:49:37 > 0:49:40Eight made-to-measure wrap dresses in just five hours.

0:49:40 > 0:49:43But which ones will impress May and Patrick?

0:49:51 > 0:49:53Well, the first thing we notice is the fit's good.

0:49:53 > 0:49:57It's hugging the body, which is what we want from a stretch garment.

0:49:57 > 0:49:59The cross is sitting in exactly the right place -

0:49:59 > 0:50:01right in the centre of the sternum

0:50:01 > 0:50:04You've bound the edges and you've not stretched them out of shape.

0:50:04 > 0:50:07This seam is sitting very flat.

0:50:07 > 0:50:09The bottom hem is very even and flat.

0:50:09 > 0:50:13I think overall there's a nice balance, it moves very well.

0:50:13 > 0:50:16- So I'd say it's a very, very good effort.- Thank you!

0:50:21 > 0:50:24Sadly you've stretched your edges with your binding.

0:50:24 > 0:50:27The sleeves have worked well, the sash is nice.

0:50:27 > 0:50:31It's just lost its shape a little bit, which is really unfortunate.

0:50:35 > 0:50:38I feel we've got quite a lot of fabric on the top here.

0:50:38 > 0:50:40Yes, it's been a bit of a tuck-in job, hasn't it?

0:50:40 > 0:50:43We've got all this excess here.

0:50:43 > 0:50:46We've got gathers on the back shoulder here,

0:50:46 > 0:50:47and this one's flat.

0:50:47 > 0:50:49It's not bad, but it's not brilliant.

0:50:56 > 0:51:00The first thing I see is this lovely neckline that hugs the model.

0:51:00 > 0:51:04It's really flat, it's really hugging the back neck really nicely,

0:51:04 > 0:51:09it sits smooth across the top of the chest, and it looks well balanced.

0:51:09 > 0:51:12And this faux wrap is sitting beautifully over her tummy.

0:51:12 > 0:51:15- I think overall it's very good. - Thank you.

0:51:22 > 0:51:24It really needs to hug the body, and it's not.

0:51:24 > 0:51:27You've attempted something quite difficult in putting this collar on.

0:51:27 > 0:51:30It's quite a substantially different material,

0:51:30 > 0:51:34and it just hasn't allowed that jersey to do what it does best,

0:51:34 > 0:51:35which is hug the figure.

0:51:35 > 0:51:38And it's just sitting too far off the body.

0:51:38 > 0:51:40You could have made it in any fabric.

0:51:40 > 0:51:43We're not seeing anything from the jersey in this at all.

0:51:53 > 0:51:55I love the way it's sculpting the body.

0:51:55 > 0:51:57I would like to say how relieved I am

0:51:57 > 0:52:01that the nap seems to be going in the same direction.

0:52:01 > 0:52:03I think it's incredibly impactful.

0:52:03 > 0:52:05You've cut this pattern yourself, haven't you?

0:52:05 > 0:52:08The fitting on the shoulder is exceptional.

0:52:08 > 0:52:11I wouldn't have chosen bright emerald green on purple,

0:52:11 > 0:52:14but anything less bold would not have done it justice.

0:52:14 > 0:52:17And also, when I was watching you cut that curve,

0:52:17 > 0:52:19I was thinking, would it work?

0:52:19 > 0:52:21And it's brilliant. You've done a really good job.

0:52:21 > 0:52:25- This is what we wanted from stretch fabric week.- Thank you.

0:52:31 > 0:52:34The first thing I notice is the neckline.

0:52:34 > 0:52:38The right-hand side is sitting beautifully, and the left-hand side

0:52:38 > 0:52:42is misbehaving itself, so a little stretching issue there, I think.

0:52:42 > 0:52:45This is the narrowest point on your model here,

0:52:45 > 0:52:48and your waistline is sitting a good two inches lower than that.

0:52:48 > 0:52:52It's trying to find that true waist and using that as a guide.

0:52:52 > 0:52:55This sleeve is inserted slightly better than the other one.

0:52:55 > 0:52:56Can I just swivel you around?

0:52:56 > 0:52:58We've just got a few pleats in this one.

0:52:58 > 0:53:00The sleeves trouble me a bit.

0:53:00 > 0:53:02They just feel slightly overpowering.

0:53:02 > 0:53:06I think without them the dress becomes a completely different animal.

0:53:06 > 0:53:09I really prefer the kimono-style sleeves,

0:53:09 > 0:53:12but I do appreciate the comments, thank you.

0:53:12 > 0:53:14Thank you. Yes - thank you, kimono style!

0:53:21 > 0:53:24I'd like to mention how well the skirt drapes on this.

0:53:24 > 0:53:26It's falling beautifully.

0:53:26 > 0:53:28It isn't sitting quite flush on the back of the neck,

0:53:28 > 0:53:31which is a shame, but actually,

0:53:31 > 0:53:34the end of these darts, here, the centre,

0:53:34 > 0:53:37it's actually beautifully balanced and really well positioned.

0:53:37 > 0:53:39The front neckline is sitting well.

0:53:39 > 0:53:43That front edge is fitting very nicely both ways,

0:53:43 > 0:53:45and it's very cleanly and very evenly stitched.

0:53:45 > 0:53:48Given that it was panic stations an hour ago,

0:53:48 > 0:53:51- with the exception of that collar, I think it's very good.- Thank you.

0:54:02 > 0:54:06It's going to be so tough for the judges to make a decision on this one.

0:54:06 > 0:54:08I just hope that I'm the one that's staying.

0:54:08 > 0:54:12I needed a good day today, and it just turned out to be a bit of a car crash.

0:54:12 > 0:54:15I just didn't have time to perfect it on the model.

0:54:15 > 0:54:17So I don't think I've done enough.

0:54:17 > 0:54:21I think... I'm very much in the firing line.

0:54:24 > 0:54:30Let me ask you about who you're thinking should leave the sewing room.

0:54:30 > 0:54:32For me, I think David has done enough.

0:54:32 > 0:54:39I think his wrap dress was pretty well executed, so I think it's a decision between Jenni and Julie.

0:54:39 > 0:54:42If we compare the dresses they made today, we've got this one,

0:54:42 > 0:54:45and then we've got this one.

0:54:45 > 0:54:47It wasn't great across the chest,

0:54:47 > 0:54:49it was tight across the seat,

0:54:49 > 0:54:52but overall it wasn't too badly sewn.

0:54:52 > 0:54:55But it was simple. This was a much more ambitious project,

0:54:55 > 0:54:58but it just didn't fulfil the brief.

0:54:58 > 0:55:00- I mean, there are plusses and minuses in both of these.- Yes.

0:55:00 > 0:55:04- But it think, on the whole, we both agree...- On who we think needs to go.

0:55:04 > 0:55:07- ..On who we should think has to go home.- Yeah.

0:55:16 > 0:55:19Let's start with the brilliant news,

0:55:19 > 0:55:24which is these guys, their favourite garment of the week.

0:55:24 > 0:55:28This week's garment of the week is...

0:55:28 > 0:55:31this one! APPLAUSE

0:55:34 > 0:55:37- Are you happy?- Very happy! I'm very shocked, as well.

0:55:37 > 0:55:40Are you? Incredibly well merited.

0:55:40 > 0:55:43I think it stands out as a really fantastic piece of sewing.

0:55:43 > 0:55:46And just what we were hoping for with this challenge this week.

0:55:46 > 0:55:50- Thank you, thank you so much! - It's amazing.- Thank you.

0:55:50 > 0:55:54In our dream world we would all just stay here together.

0:55:54 > 0:55:57But that is not to be, somebody has to leave.

0:55:57 > 0:55:59And the person that is leaving is...

0:56:10 > 0:56:14It's Julie. I'm sorry.

0:56:14 > 0:56:16- No, don't be. - SHE LAUGHS

0:56:16 > 0:56:19No, but you're so hilarious, I want you just to stay anyway.

0:56:19 > 0:56:21- Pack it in!- OK.

0:56:21 > 0:56:23LAUGHTER

0:56:23 > 0:56:26- Well done, Julie! - APPLAUSE

0:56:29 > 0:56:34Julie has tried to impress us the last couple of days.

0:56:34 > 0:56:38She's really worked had at challenging herself.

0:56:38 > 0:56:42She has done nothing but push herself to the absolute limit.

0:56:42 > 0:56:45And she's brought a real joy to everything we've done.

0:56:45 > 0:56:47We know she's a good sewer,

0:56:47 > 0:56:50but all we can do is judge on what was put in front of us,

0:56:50 > 0:56:52and, unfortunately, today was not her day.

0:56:52 > 0:56:56I would have been upset if somebody else went instead of me.

0:56:56 > 0:56:58Cos that wouldn't have been right.

0:56:58 > 0:56:59I'm sorry, Julie.

0:56:59 > 0:57:03The best part about being on the Sewing Bee has been meeting the other contestants.

0:57:03 > 0:57:05We've had such a laugh. It's been great.

0:57:05 > 0:57:07- MUFFLED:- Pack it in!

0:57:07 > 0:57:08I'm going to miss Julie.

0:57:08 > 0:57:13She has made me laugh SO much, I can't tell you.

0:57:14 > 0:57:17I won't even look in my sewing room for a couple of weeks

0:57:17 > 0:57:20cos I'm all sewed out at the moment, I'll be honest!

0:57:22 > 0:57:25I've put everything in today, and it paid off, and...

0:57:25 > 0:57:28Yeah, pinch me. Punch me. Anything.

0:57:28 > 0:57:32- HE LAUGHS - I've been surprised every week so far

0:57:32 > 0:57:34that my name hasn't been read out.

0:57:34 > 0:57:37You never know - might happen again next week.

0:57:38 > 0:57:41Who do you think is going to come through and win?

0:57:41 > 0:57:43Chinelo.

0:57:43 > 0:57:44Guess what?

0:57:44 > 0:57:47- MAN ON PHONE: 'What?' - I won garment of the week!

0:57:47 > 0:57:49'Whoa!'

0:57:49 > 0:57:52BOTH LAUGH

0:57:55 > 0:57:56At the next Sewing Bee...

0:57:56 > 0:58:00I don't like kids' clothes. I don't like kids.

0:58:00 > 0:58:02..the smallest pattern challenge yet...

0:58:02 > 0:58:06If you break the material, Claudia, I'm going to find it very difficult to forgive you.

0:58:08 > 0:58:10..the fanciest alteration so far...

0:58:10 > 0:58:13My daughter would say, "Chuck it in a bin, Dad. Not wearing that."

0:58:13 > 0:58:15..and made-to-measure prom dresses...

0:58:15 > 0:58:17Let's bring them in!

0:58:17 > 0:58:19'..for someone completely unexpected.'

0:58:19 > 0:58:21LAUGHTER

0:58:21 > 0:58:25Hello... Oh, my God! I didn't recognise you!
