0:00:02 > 0:00:04We've reached the quarterfinal of our sewing marathon

0:00:04 > 0:00:07and our sewers are about to work up a sweat as they take on active wear.

0:00:07 > 0:00:11So, who is playing the long game and who is going to run out of puff?

0:00:11 > 0:00:13I'm quite tired just thinking about it.

0:00:13 > 0:00:17Welcome to the Great British Sewing Bee.

0:00:17 > 0:00:22- Last time...- Sex, drugs and rock and roll.- ..'60s girl Joyce...

0:00:22 > 0:00:26- I used a machine like that when I was younger.- ..came top...

0:00:26 > 0:00:29- These bands are absolutely spot-on. - ..twice.

0:00:29 > 0:00:32It's like a Liquorice Allsort, it's almost edible.

0:00:32 > 0:00:34Jade's attention to detail...

0:00:34 > 0:00:39- Even the sleeves were pattern-matched. - ..won her garment of the week.

0:00:40 > 0:00:43- I'm so happy.- And after mistakes in the made-to-measure...

0:00:43 > 0:00:46Oh, God, look at that, the lining is too small.

0:00:46 > 0:00:48..we said goodbye to Angeline.

0:00:48 > 0:00:51This time - the sewers get active.

0:00:51 > 0:00:52They work.

0:00:52 > 0:00:57- Oh, my God.- The alterations go downhill.- This is nuts.

0:00:57 > 0:01:00- Do you find this quite fun? - No. Why would I find it fun?

0:01:00 > 0:01:02They grapple with stretch fabrics.

0:01:02 > 0:01:06- It's like it's designed to upset you.- Like weird boyfriends.

0:01:06 > 0:01:08And figure-hugging sportswear.

0:01:08 > 0:01:09This fits like a glove!

0:01:09 > 0:01:11It's supposed to be a top, not a glove.

0:01:11 > 0:01:13But which of these quarterfinalists...

0:01:13 > 0:01:16Will people stop running? It's really nerve-racking.

0:01:16 > 0:01:18..will become a semifinalist?

0:01:18 > 0:01:20Just a total nightmare.

0:01:20 > 0:01:24Get ready for the most unpredictable Sewing Bee yet.

0:01:24 > 0:01:27It's from one thing to the next. Like this...whoo!

0:01:27 > 0:01:30- Is anyone happy with theirs? - No.- No.- No.

0:01:30 > 0:01:33So what the hell is going to happen?

0:01:33 > 0:01:35If they complain that there are puckers in my sleeve insertions...

0:01:35 > 0:01:37You may tell them to pucker off!

0:01:37 > 0:01:39SHE LAUGHS

0:02:01 > 0:02:04Can't believe we're down to the last five.

0:02:04 > 0:02:06Absolutely delighted to be here.

0:02:06 > 0:02:07Did you say quarterfinals?

0:02:07 > 0:02:11I'm just going to go in there and do absolutely everything

0:02:11 > 0:02:13that I can to stay.

0:02:13 > 0:02:14All the way up?

0:02:14 > 0:02:16That means we have to go all the way down.

0:02:16 > 0:02:20It absolutely feels like it's anybody's game at the moment.

0:02:20 > 0:02:22There is no clear winner.

0:02:23 > 0:02:26I'm going to stay calm, read the pattern,

0:02:26 > 0:02:28that's probably a good idea, we didn't do that last week.

0:02:28 > 0:02:31And just try and get that perfect sew.

0:02:31 > 0:02:35Everyone else has managed it and I really want to do that for myself more than anything.

0:02:35 > 0:02:39Huge congratulations for making it through to the quarterfinal!

0:02:39 > 0:02:44This week, the judges would like to test you on how you make activewear

0:02:44 > 0:02:47using very technical fabrics.

0:02:47 > 0:02:50- Patrick, why don't you share with the group the pattern?- Oh, God.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53OK, here you are.

0:02:53 > 0:02:54Hand those round.

0:02:54 > 0:02:56ALL GROAN AND CHATTER

0:02:56 > 0:03:00We'd like you to make a men's cycling top in Lycra.

0:03:00 > 0:03:02It's designed to be aerodynamic,

0:03:02 > 0:03:05so we don't want to see any puckered seams.

0:03:05 > 0:03:07It's got to be beautifully sewn.

0:03:07 > 0:03:10- How do you feel about that? - Terrified.

0:03:10 > 0:03:14You have two hours, 45 minutes. Your time starts now.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19A cycling top requires a highly mobile fabric as it needs to

0:03:19 > 0:03:20move with the body,

0:03:20 > 0:03:24so the haberdashery has been stocked with rolls of Lycra.

0:03:24 > 0:03:26I'll go for block colour but contrast it.

0:03:26 > 0:03:28I think I'm going to go for that.

0:03:28 > 0:03:31It's a men's cycle top, let's remember that.

0:03:31 > 0:03:32Yeah, I'm not going pink, then.

0:03:32 > 0:03:34I've never sewn with Lycra.

0:03:34 > 0:03:37- I have felt it before. - I like the purple.

0:03:37 > 0:03:39Purple is men's as well, isn't it?

0:03:39 > 0:03:40I don't wear activewear generally,

0:03:40 > 0:03:44unless you count activity as lying around on the sofa and knitting.

0:03:44 > 0:03:45Why activewear?

0:03:45 > 0:03:49Specific active apparel is expensive

0:03:49 > 0:03:52and to be able to do it requires a great deal of skill.

0:03:52 > 0:03:55This is an incredibly difficult fabric to sew.

0:03:55 > 0:03:56It's got a four-way stretch,

0:03:56 > 0:03:59so it stretches down and across the fabric.

0:03:59 > 0:04:03One side can stretch more than the other, so you will get puckering.

0:04:03 > 0:04:06It's really important it is well pinned,

0:04:06 > 0:04:08particularly around this area.

0:04:08 > 0:04:10The zip is difficult.

0:04:10 > 0:04:13It's very important that the collar is lined up properly.

0:04:13 > 0:04:16It's going to be very hard to achieve this level of finish

0:04:16 > 0:04:17with this fabric.

0:04:17 > 0:04:20It's, I think, one of the toughest challenges we've ever set.

0:04:20 > 0:04:22Yes, I would agree with you there.

0:04:22 > 0:04:23I am really nervous about this.

0:04:23 > 0:04:25I really hate stretch fabric.

0:04:25 > 0:04:28I mean, there's more and more need for activewear these days.

0:04:28 > 0:04:30More and more people wearing it.

0:04:30 > 0:04:32Whether or not they're actually being active

0:04:32 > 0:04:34is a whole other ball game.

0:04:34 > 0:04:38There's an arrow marked on this pattern piece...here...

0:04:38 > 0:04:40that you have to line up with the grain line

0:04:40 > 0:04:43so that your stretch is going straight down...

0:04:43 > 0:04:45If it is slightly skew then you'll get twist,

0:04:45 > 0:04:47which would obviously not be ideal.

0:04:47 > 0:04:50You want everything to lie properly and nice and flat.

0:04:50 > 0:04:53The front of the cycling top is made up of three pieces -

0:04:53 > 0:04:56one on the lower half and two on the top,

0:04:56 > 0:04:59which are attached to the back piece at the shoulder seams.

0:04:59 > 0:05:02Next, a collar and zip are attached at the neckline.

0:05:02 > 0:05:05And the lower half stitched at the centre seam.

0:05:05 > 0:05:07Finally, the sleeves are inserted.

0:05:09 > 0:05:11- Tracey.- Hiya.

0:05:11 > 0:05:14Look at these colours, you clever human being.

0:05:14 > 0:05:16I like a bit of red and blue.

0:05:16 > 0:05:19When you heard, "It is activewear week", inside...

0:05:19 > 0:05:22- I died a small death inside. - I mean, by the way, so did I.

0:05:22 > 0:05:26But apparently it is very important. Have you worked with Lycra before?

0:05:26 > 0:05:30I've made some kids' things with Lycra, beach-short type things.

0:05:30 > 0:05:32Are you worried about time?

0:05:32 > 0:05:35Normally, I'm not bothered about times because normally I sew very quickly.

0:05:35 > 0:05:38But I can't sew this quickly because it won't be accurate,

0:05:38 > 0:05:41so I'm more worried about accuracy today.

0:05:41 > 0:05:44- I've got to get that right today. - All right. Darling, good luck.

0:05:44 > 0:05:45Thank you.

0:05:46 > 0:05:49I'm being very careful when I'm cutting that I'm cutting accurately.

0:05:49 > 0:05:53- Using a rotary cutter really helps with that.- I always use scissors.

0:05:53 > 0:05:56I've tried a rotary cutter and I'm not so good at it.

0:05:57 > 0:06:01It may be an age thing, I don't know.

0:06:01 > 0:06:03With all eight pieces cut...

0:06:03 > 0:06:05So it says right sides together,

0:06:05 > 0:06:07sew the upper front to the back at the shoulders.

0:06:07 > 0:06:09- ..sewing can begin.- Let's do it.

0:06:12 > 0:06:15Overlockers are very important when working with stretch.

0:06:15 > 0:06:18The stitch it does itself is inherently stretchy,

0:06:18 > 0:06:20it has all of these extra threads in it.

0:06:20 > 0:06:22Normally a sewing machine has two threads

0:06:22 > 0:06:25and if you pull on the stitch on a sewing machine, it'll pop.

0:06:25 > 0:06:27This, you can stretch.

0:06:27 > 0:06:28- Hi, Rumana.- Hello.

0:06:28 > 0:06:31- Morning.- How are you getting on?

0:06:31 > 0:06:33Trying not to have a panic

0:06:33 > 0:06:36- because this is the only the second time I have used an overlocker.- OK.

0:06:36 > 0:06:40- Oh, really?- Yeah, the first time being the babygro.- Oh, right.

0:06:40 > 0:06:42So I'm not used to these at all.

0:06:42 > 0:06:44They scare me more than anything.

0:06:44 > 0:06:46A little bit panicked.

0:06:48 > 0:06:51You do have to be careful that you don't stretch it.

0:06:51 > 0:06:53You just have to take your time,

0:06:53 > 0:06:55you can't really rush with anything like this

0:06:55 > 0:06:58because it does cut the seam off.

0:06:58 > 0:07:02I love using an overlocker. Foot down and go.

0:07:04 > 0:07:06I drive a car a bit like that!

0:07:08 > 0:07:12"With right sides together, sew the outer collar piece to the neckline."

0:07:13 > 0:07:17It's a fine line between stretching and overstretching the fabric.

0:07:17 > 0:07:21Because we need to make the collar fit, I'm using loads of pins.

0:07:21 > 0:07:23- Charlotte.- Hello, darling.

0:07:23 > 0:07:25You're used to this kind of fabric?

0:07:25 > 0:07:28- Nobody has ever used this kind of fabric.- It's really hard, isn't it?

0:07:28 > 0:07:31The judges keep on saying it's really hard.

0:07:31 > 0:07:33It just wants to go all baggy and horrible

0:07:33 > 0:07:35and wibbly on all your seams. That's what it wants to do.

0:07:35 > 0:07:39- It's like it's designed to upset you.- Like weird boyfriends.

0:07:39 > 0:07:40Exactly.

0:07:44 > 0:07:47"Attach the under collar to the outer collar."

0:07:47 > 0:07:52So if I can find my under collar, I would be delighted to do that.

0:07:52 > 0:07:53A second layer of fabric,

0:07:53 > 0:07:57the under collar, gives the garment structure around the neck.

0:07:57 > 0:08:01It does just want to shift...everywhere.

0:08:01 > 0:08:03But joining two layers of Lycra isn't easy.

0:08:03 > 0:08:06I'm trying not to fiddle with it too much because that's

0:08:06 > 0:08:07when it starts to stretch.

0:08:07 > 0:08:10It's slipping all over the place.

0:08:10 > 0:08:14Going to have to unpick that and do it again. Come out.

0:08:14 > 0:08:17The judges definitely don't want any bumpiness around the neckline.

0:08:17 > 0:08:19I've attached the collar

0:08:19 > 0:08:23so the next stage is to do something called understitching,

0:08:23 > 0:08:25which means attach this bit to this bit

0:08:25 > 0:08:27so it won't roll over to the front.

0:08:27 > 0:08:28- JADE:- How exciting.

0:08:28 > 0:08:32Understitching is sewn to the inner part of the garment.

0:08:32 > 0:08:35I think the thing to do with this is just get it done.

0:08:35 > 0:08:38Once the under collar is folded back to the inside,

0:08:38 > 0:08:40the stitches shouldn't be seen.

0:08:43 > 0:08:44I think I've messed up my collar.

0:08:44 > 0:08:48I don't really understand what is going on at all with the collar.

0:08:48 > 0:08:51- OK.- I'm just sewing it. - And hoping for the best?- Yes.

0:08:51 > 0:08:53I don't know why we don't just buy it.

0:08:53 > 0:08:56I think I will be buying these things rather than making.

0:08:56 > 0:09:01What if your lovely husband goes, "Guess what, sweetpea, I'm going to take up cycling."

0:09:01 > 0:09:02You're going to say,

0:09:02 > 0:09:07"Don't you worry, don't go and spend £100 on a cycle top, I'll whip you one up."

0:09:07 > 0:09:10My husband has asked me to fix a button on his coat

0:09:10 > 0:09:13for about three years and it's still not done.

0:09:13 > 0:09:17And you haven't done it? Do want to make an official apology to him?

0:09:17 > 0:09:20By the way, I have never knowingly done anything for my husband.

0:09:27 > 0:09:30Sewers, you are halfway through.

0:09:30 > 0:09:32Right, zip.

0:09:32 > 0:09:34Esme and Patrick's pattern demands

0:09:34 > 0:09:37an exposed zip in the centre front seam.

0:09:37 > 0:09:40Last week we had a lot of wonky zips where one side was higher

0:09:40 > 0:09:44than the other. What have I done there?

0:09:44 > 0:09:47The problem with it is, this woven zipper tape is solid,

0:09:47 > 0:09:51this stretches, so as you are trying to combine the two,

0:09:51 > 0:09:53they don't want to play nicely together.

0:09:53 > 0:09:57The zip-up collar is the most visible part of the garment.

0:09:57 > 0:09:59Holy bloody cheese balls.

0:09:59 > 0:10:01- TRACEY:- I'm trying to be really careful with this zip

0:10:01 > 0:10:05because it will show on the outside if I'm not really careful.

0:10:11 > 0:10:14Nobody likes sewing Lycra.

0:10:14 > 0:10:15SHE EXHALES

0:10:18 > 0:10:21I think this challenge is proving as difficult as we thought it

0:10:21 > 0:10:22was going to be.

0:10:22 > 0:10:26That thing of stretching one side more than the other, putting

0:10:26 > 0:10:30stretch with non-stretch, sewing the zip on is really difficult.

0:10:31 > 0:10:34Oh, mother almighty.

0:10:34 > 0:10:36You guys are getting meaner and meaner each week.

0:10:36 > 0:10:40I had to go to the dentist yesterday and have a tooth filled,

0:10:40 > 0:10:43I think I'd rather go back there than do this again!

0:10:43 > 0:10:46Joyce, are you unpicking?

0:10:46 > 0:10:48I'm unpicking and can I show you why?

0:10:48 > 0:10:54I wanted that seam to be together there and there and it wasn't.

0:10:54 > 0:10:56Yellow and blue, almost denim-y.

0:10:56 > 0:11:00- It's actually Tour de France. - Tour de France!

0:11:00 > 0:11:04Exactly. Instead of the yellow jersey, he's just halfway there.

0:11:04 > 0:11:08Fantastic. You know what he needs - drugs.

0:11:08 > 0:11:10That'll get him there faster.

0:11:10 > 0:11:13That's what they do, Joyce, I don't want to ruin it for you.

0:11:16 > 0:11:18Sewers, one hour left.

0:11:18 > 0:11:22Time is going too fast in Lycra world - I sense.

0:11:22 > 0:11:27I am now turning the under collar to the inside

0:11:27 > 0:11:29and then I'm going to cover stitch,

0:11:29 > 0:11:34which means stitching it down with that weird machine there.

0:11:35 > 0:11:38- What is this? - This is a cover-stitch machine.

0:11:38 > 0:11:39How are you finding it?

0:11:39 > 0:11:42- I thought I hated overlockers and then I met this.- Ah.

0:11:43 > 0:11:49- The cover-stitch machine is new to everyone.- This is petrifying.

0:11:49 > 0:11:51As far as I can tell, it's two needles on the top

0:11:51 > 0:11:53so I'm getting a twin line of stitching on the top

0:11:53 > 0:11:56and then underneath it's doing this loop which allows it to stretch,

0:11:56 > 0:12:00which is what we need with this Lycra fabric.

0:12:00 > 0:12:02The pattern requires two lines of visible

0:12:02 > 0:12:05stitching along the neckline.

0:12:05 > 0:12:07When these are finished, they look really professional.

0:12:07 > 0:12:09They don't look home-made.

0:12:09 > 0:12:12Going slow and steady cos I've never used this machine before.

0:12:12 > 0:12:16They have to be really careful that they don't do what

0:12:16 > 0:12:20I call wracking, which is make one layer get pushed round

0:12:20 > 0:12:23further than the other so you get a wobbly edge.

0:12:23 > 0:12:28It's not meant to be wonky. But I think I've done OK.

0:12:28 > 0:12:30That looks really bad.

0:12:30 > 0:12:33I think I've overstretched it couple of times already in the collar

0:12:33 > 0:12:37because I wasn't sure what I was doing. I'm hating this challenge.

0:12:37 > 0:12:39I'm hating everything about this challenge.

0:12:39 > 0:12:42You've given me so many machines I don't really know how to use

0:12:42 > 0:12:43and I'm back to the overlocker.

0:12:43 > 0:12:45I just want to get to the end now.

0:12:49 > 0:12:51Sewers, you only have half an hour left.

0:12:51 > 0:12:55Well, it looks like half a top now. So that's a start.

0:12:56 > 0:12:58- JADE:- This is one of the key seams,

0:12:58 > 0:13:02this is where it actually attaches the tops to the bottoms.

0:13:02 > 0:13:05It is an eye-catching seam.

0:13:05 > 0:13:08It's got a slight curve on the seam where it goes across the chest,

0:13:08 > 0:13:12so it's going to be really obvious if you've got one side slightly wonky.

0:13:14 > 0:13:16This is driving me up the wall.

0:13:19 > 0:13:22This is the kind of thing that would make you cry.

0:13:24 > 0:13:27- Right, sleeves.- Just give me a second, I don't what I've done here.

0:13:27 > 0:13:30I've no idea which pedal I'm supposed to be pressing

0:13:30 > 0:13:33most of the time, with all these machines on my desk.

0:13:33 > 0:13:37I've just... (It's just a total nightmare.)

0:13:37 > 0:13:41- Is anyone happy with theirs? - No.- No.- No.- OK.

0:13:41 > 0:13:44My thread's snapped halfway round my hem.

0:13:44 > 0:13:49- I have not made friends with this machine at all.- Six minutes.

0:13:49 > 0:13:50That is not helpful.

0:13:50 > 0:13:54Scissors, scissors. Where are my scissors?

0:13:54 > 0:13:56It's definitely not simple sowing.

0:13:56 > 0:14:00I've got three sewing machines on my table. That's not relaxing.

0:14:03 > 0:14:07- I just want it to end so the torture is over.- Oh, come on.

0:14:07 > 0:14:08- That makes me want to get on a bike.- Does it?

0:14:08 > 0:14:11"What are you doing this weekend?" "I'm just going cycling."

0:14:11 > 0:14:13These stitches are not as good as they could be.

0:14:13 > 0:14:16I'm going to bung it on the model and hope I never, ever

0:14:16 > 0:14:19have to do anything like this again.

0:14:19 > 0:14:23The only thing I'm not happy with is this little wonky bit there.

0:14:23 > 0:14:25It looks like it's got three rows.

0:14:25 > 0:14:27This fits like a glove!

0:14:27 > 0:14:32- It's supposed to be a top, not a glove.- Gorgeous, isn't he, my man?

0:14:32 > 0:14:35Have I understitched it on the wrong side? Have I got the wrong side?

0:14:35 > 0:14:37Yeah, you've understitched it on the outside,

0:14:37 > 0:14:40it should have been understitched on that side.

0:14:41 > 0:14:45- Oh, God, why is it baggy? - I don't know. I don't think...

0:14:45 > 0:14:46Nothing to see, go away.

0:14:46 > 0:14:49Just put it on the flipping mannequin, you've got about ten seconds.

0:14:49 > 0:14:52Jade, stop speaking, put it on the mannequin.

0:14:52 > 0:14:55Time is up, Rumana, are you OK? Zip him up.

0:14:55 > 0:14:57Guys let's take these puppies up.

0:14:57 > 0:14:59MUSIC: Let Us Take You For A Ride by Cliff Richard

0:14:59 > 0:15:02# Ride with us, come ride with us Better be allied with us... #

0:15:02 > 0:15:07Five cycling tops made from scratch in just two hours and 45 minutes.

0:15:07 > 0:15:09# We are pleading

0:15:09 > 0:15:11# Please let us take you for a ride. #

0:15:14 > 0:15:18You've chewed this neckline, unfortunately, just a little bit.

0:15:18 > 0:15:22- There's signs of multiple goes at this.- Pickings?- Yeah.

0:15:22 > 0:15:24It looks like you've stretched it.

0:15:24 > 0:15:28Where the collar is, it's matching up pretty well, actually.

0:15:28 > 0:15:31This has been pulled up slightly, here...

0:15:32 > 0:15:35- ..rather than a smooth line. - The bottom hem is even.

0:15:35 > 0:15:39Not bad at all, just I think this detachment of the collar,

0:15:39 > 0:15:42the stretching at the neck that's let it down fractionally.

0:15:48 > 0:15:52Well, I really like these colours. They really pop.

0:15:52 > 0:15:55It's also extremely well sewn.

0:15:55 > 0:15:59- I would have to say you've got this near-on perfect.- Yep.

0:15:59 > 0:16:03- The collar's sitting very nicely. - And here, this is not pulling here.

0:16:03 > 0:16:09Your hem is very, very even around the bottom.

0:16:09 > 0:16:11- This isn't bagging here.- No.

0:16:11 > 0:16:15The only thing is the zip doesn't go right to the top.

0:16:21 > 0:16:25The main thing is the collar, actually. Where it shows...

0:16:25 > 0:16:27Where the collar lines up is slightly off.

0:16:27 > 0:16:30What you've done is you've understitched

0:16:30 > 0:16:32to the front of the collar and not the back of the collar.

0:16:32 > 0:16:35Also, you've stretch it out while you've done it a little bit.

0:16:35 > 0:16:38You've lost tension in just a couple of places...

0:16:38 > 0:16:40around the bottom hem.

0:16:47 > 0:16:49It's really not bad at all.

0:16:49 > 0:16:51- It's pretty neat, isn't it, Patrick? - Yeah.

0:16:51 > 0:16:54- Yeah. I mean, the collar does actually sit really nicely.- Yes.

0:16:54 > 0:16:58- The collars don't...- I know. - ..match there.- I know.

0:16:59 > 0:17:02And the zip is pulling this up.

0:17:02 > 0:17:04But one thing I would say that is really good

0:17:04 > 0:17:06is how this meets at the top.

0:17:06 > 0:17:09I think the colour combination actually works extremely well.

0:17:09 > 0:17:13- Yeah, it does.- I think it really does look very smart indeed.

0:17:20 > 0:17:24- The first thing is you've managed to stretch the...- The neck.- ..the neck.

0:17:24 > 0:17:27It's sitting pretty well at the back, but it is just...

0:17:27 > 0:17:29It's gaping a bit at the front.

0:17:29 > 0:17:31- The collar isn't matching.- No.

0:17:31 > 0:17:35- And you've done your cover stitch... - Yeah.

0:17:35 > 0:17:39..over the seam. You were asked to do it above the seam.

0:17:39 > 0:17:42- Your hemming... I mean, we've got... - Yeah, I had a problem.

0:17:42 > 0:17:46- How have we managed to get three rows of stitches?- I don't know!

0:17:46 > 0:17:48The front seam is going up a little bit,

0:17:48 > 0:17:51and it's to do with the zip being not stretch,

0:17:51 > 0:17:53and this all being stretch.

0:17:57 > 0:18:01Patrick and Esme will now rank the garments in order of success.

0:18:01 > 0:18:04In fifth place, it's Rumana.

0:18:04 > 0:18:06You've just not got that collar right.

0:18:06 > 0:18:08Fourth place is Jade.

0:18:08 > 0:18:12It didn't quite match here, and the collar was a bit wobbly.

0:18:12 > 0:18:14Third place, Charlotte.

0:18:14 > 0:18:15Again, collar stretched out.

0:18:15 > 0:18:17Otherwise, spot-on.

0:18:17 > 0:18:19In second place...

0:18:23 > 0:18:25- ..Joyce.- Yes!

0:18:25 > 0:18:29- I'm really pleased with that. - It just didn't meet here.- Yeah.

0:18:29 > 0:18:32- Which means, of course, in first place, it's Tracey.- Yay!- Thank you.

0:18:32 > 0:18:33THEY ALL APPLAUD

0:18:33 > 0:18:35- Well done.- Thank you.

0:18:35 > 0:18:38In a near-perfect execution - beautiful choices of colours,

0:18:38 > 0:18:42- neatly sewn, beautiful fit. Well done.- Thank you.

0:18:42 > 0:18:43Huge congratulations.

0:18:43 > 0:18:47All of you, go and have a relax, and then we come back in,

0:18:47 > 0:18:49and the judges have chosen

0:18:49 > 0:18:52a particularly exciting alteration challenge.

0:18:52 > 0:18:53I can't wait for you to see it.

0:18:53 > 0:18:56# We've got to stay... #

0:18:56 > 0:18:59- Cheers.- Cheers, guys.- Cheers. - Another one done.

0:19:01 > 0:19:04Absolutely chuffed with that. Really, really thrilled.

0:19:04 > 0:19:06I think I've taken their advice on board,

0:19:06 > 0:19:09slowed down, made sure it was neat, and it was brilliant.

0:19:09 > 0:19:12So, yeah, really, really excited!

0:19:12 > 0:19:15Compared to last week's...nightmare.

0:19:15 > 0:19:18I enjoyed making it, to be honest, until I got to the collar,

0:19:18 > 0:19:21and I could have thrown that sewing machine out the window.

0:19:21 > 0:19:25I hate being in the middle. I want to be at the top.

0:19:25 > 0:19:29Ideally, I would feel better if I was higher up.

0:19:29 > 0:19:33I don't think I'll ever make a men's cycle top out of Lycra again.

0:19:36 > 0:19:38Welcome back to your alteration challenge.

0:19:38 > 0:19:43Your judges are giving you a classic piece of sportswear

0:19:43 > 0:19:46that they would like you to totally transform.

0:19:46 > 0:19:47Patrick?

0:19:48 > 0:19:52- This week, we're giving you each... - Oh!

0:19:52 > 0:19:54THEY LAUGH

0:19:55 > 0:19:57Um...

0:19:57 > 0:19:59It's a 1980s ski-suit.

0:19:59 > 0:20:02This could be your chance to go really off-piste...

0:20:02 > 0:20:04- THEY GROAN - Um, like what I did there?

0:20:04 > 0:20:06So you've got three layers of fabric here -

0:20:06 > 0:20:09you've got a synthetic outer, a layer of wadding and a lining.

0:20:09 > 0:20:10We want you to take all of this

0:20:10 > 0:20:14and to make us a piece of outerwear for a child.

0:20:14 > 0:20:17We don't want you to use any other fabric.

0:20:17 > 0:20:21You can use trimmings, but remember you've got zips,

0:20:21 > 0:20:25you've got belts, you've got bits of elastic, you've got cuffs.

0:20:25 > 0:20:28So we want you to try and incorporate those.

0:20:28 > 0:20:30Look at their faces. They're very quiet.

0:20:30 > 0:20:32They haven't been this quiet since week one.

0:20:32 > 0:20:36- OK, we'll ask the judges to leave. Goodbye, judges.- Goodbye.

0:20:36 > 0:20:38You have 90 minutes.

0:20:38 > 0:20:40Your time starts now.

0:20:40 > 0:20:41- God.- Let's have a look.

0:20:41 > 0:20:43MUSIC: Ski Sunday Theme

0:20:43 > 0:20:45- Oh!- Oh, my God.

0:20:45 > 0:20:47I'll have that one.

0:20:47 > 0:20:49Argh!

0:20:49 > 0:20:51Just hideous.

0:20:51 > 0:20:53Come on! What kid wouldn't want that?

0:20:53 > 0:20:56I would not subject any child to having to wear that.

0:20:56 > 0:20:59This comes from my own personal collection.

0:20:59 > 0:21:01Blimey.

0:21:01 > 0:21:02That is special.

0:21:02 > 0:21:04This is a humorous challenge.

0:21:04 > 0:21:06I've made children's coats before,

0:21:06 > 0:21:09so I kind of know what kind of quantities of fabric I need.

0:21:09 > 0:21:11We've got some zips.

0:21:11 > 0:21:13This is nuts!

0:21:13 > 0:21:15Haven't got a clue what to do.

0:21:15 > 0:21:18If they're shrinking it down, firstly it has to fit the mannequin.

0:21:18 > 0:21:22- But also it still needs to look the right shape and size.- Yes.

0:21:22 > 0:21:24I mean, I'm hoping they might use, you know,

0:21:24 > 0:21:28little details like this, the pocket flaps, this bit at the front.

0:21:28 > 0:21:30- Yeah.- The collar.

0:21:30 > 0:21:34If they use the colours and the patterns that might be in the suits wisely,

0:21:34 > 0:21:37again, they could make something that has real impact.

0:21:37 > 0:21:41Oh, look at that. How can I use that?

0:21:41 > 0:21:43My initial thoughts...

0:21:44 > 0:21:47..are maybe, like, a winter jacket.

0:21:47 > 0:21:49I'll probably take the collar off.

0:21:49 > 0:21:53I'm thinking quite a squarish jacket, not tight or anything,

0:21:53 > 0:21:56but with fur around the bottom and wrists,

0:21:56 > 0:21:58and I'm going to make a hood.

0:21:58 > 0:22:02But I've flipped it, cos I prefer the blue to the purple.

0:22:02 > 0:22:04- Joyce.- Hello, Claudia.

0:22:04 > 0:22:07- You, rather bravely, went for orange world.- Yes.

0:22:07 > 0:22:10I mean, I didn't even know what to say about this. What are you making?

0:22:10 > 0:22:13- I am making a child's bomber jacket. - Oh, awesome.

0:22:13 > 0:22:16I'm trying to utilise the fabric there,

0:22:16 > 0:22:18- with these bits on, which I like. - Clever girl!

0:22:18 > 0:22:21I'm going to make a little stand-up collar,

0:22:21 > 0:22:24then I'm just going to put sleeves in, and I reckon that's my time.

0:22:24 > 0:22:26You don't normally like alteration challenge,

0:22:26 > 0:22:29- but do you find this quite fun? - No. Why would I find it fun?

0:22:29 > 0:22:30No, OK.

0:22:30 > 0:22:35- LAUGHING:- I'm performing open-heart surgery on this thing!

0:22:35 > 0:22:37I'm hoping I've got enough fabric

0:22:37 > 0:22:40for a front, a back, two sleeves,

0:22:40 > 0:22:42and I'm hoping I can get

0:22:42 > 0:22:44enough out of it for a hood.

0:22:44 > 0:22:45It doesn't look like much yet.

0:22:45 > 0:22:48It does! Oh, my God, I want...!

0:22:48 > 0:22:50That's like a little Freddie Mercury baby,

0:22:50 > 0:22:52which is all I've ever wanted! RUMANA LAUGHS

0:22:52 > 0:22:54- I'm going to put these sleeves on... - Yeah?

0:22:54 > 0:22:57..but I'm going to make it into, like, a flamingo -

0:22:57 > 0:22:59I'm going to make a hood and then have a beak on it.

0:22:59 > 0:23:01- Stop!- That's my plan. - Flamingo outerwear?!

0:23:01 > 0:23:04- Why haven't they made that already? - I don't know, I don't know.- OK.

0:23:04 > 0:23:07- There must be a reason, I feel.- OK. - But that's my plan.- I'm so excited!

0:23:08 > 0:23:12Are you having difficulty cutting this stuff? 15 million layers!

0:23:12 > 0:23:14There's that many layers - that's the problem, isn't it?

0:23:14 > 0:23:17The thick layers the sewers are having to hack through

0:23:17 > 0:23:19are all thanks to a trip to the bedroom

0:23:19 > 0:23:21with a post-war ski instructor.

0:23:23 > 0:23:27Skiing only became popular as a recreational sport in the 1930s,

0:23:27 > 0:23:29with the invention of the chairlift.

0:23:29 > 0:23:32But it left people with the dilemma of what to wear.

0:23:32 > 0:23:36The first recreational skiers obviously had no clothing

0:23:36 > 0:23:38that was specifically developed for skiing,

0:23:38 > 0:23:41so people would just adapt the kind of sportswear

0:23:41 > 0:23:44that they'd been wearing for sort of country pursuits.

0:23:44 > 0:23:47The fabrics that these clothes were made of

0:23:47 > 0:23:50were things like tweed and things like wool,

0:23:50 > 0:23:52so they can be very, very warm.

0:23:52 > 0:23:56But once wool gets wet, it really holds that water into it.

0:23:56 > 0:23:59So if you're skiing and you fall over in the snow,

0:23:59 > 0:24:02then you're likely to stay wet for a long time.

0:24:02 > 0:24:06In 1947, Klaus Obermeyer, a German ski instructor,

0:24:06 > 0:24:10arrived in America and began working at the Aspen Ski School in Colorado.

0:24:10 > 0:24:13He quickly set about finding a solution

0:24:13 > 0:24:17to keeping his students cosy, to extend their time on the slopes.

0:24:17 > 0:24:20Klaus solved this problem by taking a duvet,

0:24:20 > 0:24:24which was filled with down, and he turned this duvet into a jacket.

0:24:24 > 0:24:27Down is very good for insulating,

0:24:27 > 0:24:30because feathers trap air and keep things very warm.

0:24:30 > 0:24:34It was also shorter as well, so it allowed a lot more movement,

0:24:34 > 0:24:37so it was a much more practical item.

0:24:37 > 0:24:39When Klaus's prototype jacket

0:24:39 > 0:24:42was snapped up by one of his students for 250,

0:24:42 > 0:24:44he realised he needed to make more.

0:24:45 > 0:24:47The main issue with the first one

0:24:47 > 0:24:51was the fact that the down would all fall to the bottom of the jacket,

0:24:51 > 0:24:53so he used quilting, basically.

0:24:53 > 0:24:55So you're creating little pockets on the jacket

0:24:55 > 0:24:59that the feathers can all fit in, so it's evenly distributed.

0:24:59 > 0:25:01And this kept it much, much warmer.

0:25:01 > 0:25:03Klaus's ingenuity didn't stop there.

0:25:03 > 0:25:07He helped develop plastic ski boots, and introduced suntan lotion,

0:25:07 > 0:25:11the turtleneck, and even mirrored sunglasses.

0:25:11 > 0:25:13But he'll always be best remembered

0:25:13 > 0:25:16for creating THE jacket that propelled skiing into the future.

0:25:16 > 0:25:18Well, the '80s, at least.

0:25:22 > 0:25:23Oh, Claudia!

0:25:23 > 0:25:26Sewers! You have one hour left!

0:25:26 > 0:25:27- Blimey.- One hour.

0:25:28 > 0:25:30It's going to be pathetic.

0:25:30 > 0:25:34So I've cut off my sleeve, and I'm going to narrow it down a bit.

0:25:34 > 0:25:38This fabric, to sew with, is absolutely awful.

0:25:39 > 0:25:41There are a lot of layers.

0:25:41 > 0:25:44There's wadding, there is an inner, there's an outer. Thick and bulky.

0:25:44 > 0:25:46- MACHINE CRUNCHES AND STOPS - Oh.

0:25:46 > 0:25:48Didn't like that. Stop.

0:25:48 > 0:25:49It's like rubberised...

0:25:51 > 0:25:52..stuff. Nylon, basically.

0:25:52 > 0:25:55They wouldn't have had proper hi-tech waterproof things,

0:25:55 > 0:25:57like we do these days.

0:25:57 > 0:25:59The '80s were a terrible decade.

0:25:59 > 0:26:01Tracey, did yours have a hood, or did you add a hood?

0:26:01 > 0:26:04- I've done a hood, yeah. I've drawn it.- OK.- Here.

0:26:04 > 0:26:06- Can I have a look at your drawing? - That one there.- OK.

0:26:06 > 0:26:10- And you just measure?- I've made two. - Made two?- Yeah.- Super.

0:26:11 > 0:26:14I'm using the hood that came with the jacket

0:26:14 > 0:26:17- as a pattern to make a hood... - SHE LAUGHS

0:26:17 > 0:26:20..out of the actual trouser fabric.

0:26:20 > 0:26:23Right, let's do the collar. Mm.

0:26:23 > 0:26:26I'm putting bias binding around this collar.

0:26:26 > 0:26:28Gives it a nice little finish.

0:26:28 > 0:26:30That looks adorable.

0:26:30 > 0:26:31It will be quite cute.

0:26:31 > 0:26:34- I need something to bind the front edge with.- So you want some trim?

0:26:34 > 0:26:37- Mm...- Do you want me to lend you some yellow?

0:26:37 > 0:26:40- I mean, I am wearing this out for a date.- I'm not that desperate!

0:26:43 > 0:26:45Sewers!

0:26:47 > 0:26:49It's not that I'm not taking this seriously, I am.

0:26:49 > 0:26:53You have half an hour left to go for your ski-suit challenge.

0:26:53 > 0:26:56- Can people stop running? It's really nerve-racking.- Sorry.

0:26:56 > 0:26:59You'll be pleased to know that my legs are sweating.

0:26:59 > 0:27:00- JADE:- Nice.

0:27:05 > 0:27:07Oh, come on! Get up, you stupid thing.

0:27:07 > 0:27:12These patches are decorative, they're not functional one iota.

0:27:12 > 0:27:15I'm going to put elastic around the cuffs,

0:27:15 > 0:27:18so I have a pulled-in bottom and a pulled-in top.

0:27:19 > 0:27:22I'm wondering whether to do, like, wings.

0:27:22 > 0:27:25I'm now putting the binding all down the front, all round the hem,

0:27:25 > 0:27:27up the other side.

0:27:27 > 0:27:30And then I'm going to attach the popper thing to close it.

0:27:30 > 0:27:32- MACHINE CRUNCHES AND STOPS - Ow!

0:27:32 > 0:27:34The zip is not going on, no.

0:27:35 > 0:27:38It just doesn't like sewing through that many layers.

0:27:38 > 0:27:40I'm not wasting any fabric here.

0:27:40 > 0:27:43I'm using wadding from my ski-suit just to plump out the beak.

0:27:43 > 0:27:47I hope the judges like the fact that I've utilised...

0:27:47 > 0:27:51um, a lot of the fabric pieces, if you like.

0:27:51 > 0:27:54If they complain that there are puckers in my sleeve insertion,

0:27:54 > 0:27:56I might have something to say!

0:27:56 > 0:27:58You may tell them to PUCKER OFF!

0:27:58 > 0:27:59SHE LAUGHS

0:28:02 > 0:28:05Sewers, you have ten minutes left.

0:28:05 > 0:28:08- Will everyone be ready?- No!

0:28:08 > 0:28:10- No?- OK.

0:28:10 > 0:28:14Come on, come on. Haven't got time to mess about.

0:28:21 > 0:28:24Somebody's making something for Jackie Collins.

0:28:24 > 0:28:27Oh, hello! Who wants to go to the swings?

0:28:27 > 0:28:30- It's all a bit sort of rough and ready at the moment.- That's fine.

0:28:30 > 0:28:35And I still need to put some fur around the sleeves.

0:28:35 > 0:28:37I'm using buttons for eyes.

0:28:37 > 0:28:40Sewers, you now have two minutes left.

0:28:40 > 0:28:43I've never done anything this fast in my life.

0:28:45 > 0:28:47And I've just noticed a bit where it's not caught,

0:28:47 > 0:28:48so I'm just going to go over that.

0:28:48 > 0:28:51I have just noticed that my zip doesn't do up straight,

0:28:51 > 0:28:52but nothing I can do about that.

0:28:52 > 0:28:55- How are you?- I'm just adding a couple more poppers.

0:28:55 > 0:28:56Have you got time?

0:28:59 > 0:29:00Oh, it's so CUTE!

0:29:00 > 0:29:02It's very tight, very snug.

0:29:02 > 0:29:04She has wings!

0:29:04 > 0:29:06I've got wings on!

0:29:06 > 0:29:07I'm very happy.

0:29:07 > 0:29:12I mean, that garment alone makes me want to have a baby.

0:29:12 > 0:29:16OK, guys, that's it. Time's up.

0:29:16 > 0:29:18Let's take your adorable coats

0:29:18 > 0:29:21and put them at the front of the room, jumble them up, please.

0:29:21 > 0:29:23Good girl. Come on!

0:29:23 > 0:29:25Come on, leopard. Come on, flamingo.

0:29:25 > 0:29:27MUSIC: Cold As Ice by Foreigner

0:29:27 > 0:29:29# You're as cold as ice

0:29:29 > 0:29:34# You're willing to sacrifice our love... #

0:29:34 > 0:29:36There's some fantastic work.

0:29:36 > 0:29:37They look quite exciting.

0:29:39 > 0:29:41# You're as cold as ice

0:29:42 > 0:29:45# You're willing to sacrifice our love. #

0:29:45 > 0:29:48Got a little bomber jacket...

0:29:48 > 0:29:49with embroideries on.

0:29:49 > 0:29:52- Look at the back!- I know.

0:29:52 > 0:29:55- Isn't that cute?- This has been taken off and reapplied.- Yes.

0:29:55 > 0:29:56Taken off, reapplied.

0:29:56 > 0:29:59I love the embroidery. It looks great.

0:29:59 > 0:30:02- Obviously, this is a part of the original fastening.- Yes.

0:30:02 > 0:30:05And yes, it's not as neat and tidy as it could be,

0:30:05 > 0:30:07- but I think it's terrific. - Yeah, it looks great.

0:30:07 > 0:30:09(Blimey.)

0:30:15 > 0:30:19- So we have a little duffle coat. - With a little hood.

0:30:19 > 0:30:22- That hood is a good shape. - Yeah, it looks pretty good.

0:30:22 > 0:30:26Oh, and I like how they've put the stripes on the back...

0:30:27 > 0:30:29..echoing the sleeves.

0:30:29 > 0:30:32And look, they've put binding down the front, round the bottom

0:30:32 > 0:30:34and round the hood.

0:30:34 > 0:30:36- It's a bit snug.- Yes.

0:30:43 > 0:30:45We've got a very sort of '80s looking...

0:30:45 > 0:30:49- Bomber.- ..kind of flight jacket, yeah. I love the shape of this.

0:30:49 > 0:30:50I mean, look at that.

0:30:50 > 0:30:53The scale of it works absolutely perfectly.

0:30:53 > 0:30:56The sleeves have been re-sewn.

0:30:56 > 0:30:58The fact that we've got the sleeves

0:30:58 > 0:31:00coming almost right out of the waistline...

0:31:00 > 0:31:03I think works really well. I think it's...

0:31:03 > 0:31:05Very, very '80s.

0:31:05 > 0:31:08We've got binding round the neck, black binding.

0:31:08 > 0:31:09Binding round the bottom.

0:31:09 > 0:31:13We've got the V at the front, and the V at the back.

0:31:13 > 0:31:14I think it looks really fun.

0:31:22 > 0:31:24It's a little bird!

0:31:24 > 0:31:28I think some child would really like to wear this.

0:31:28 > 0:31:29Yeah, it's really fun.

0:31:29 > 0:31:31- It's actually very nicely executed. - Yep.

0:31:31 > 0:31:35The original neck and the top of the front are the original...

0:31:35 > 0:31:37- And they put the hood on.- Yeah.

0:31:37 > 0:31:40So they've chopped up other parts of the ski-suit

0:31:40 > 0:31:42to make these feathery shapes.

0:31:42 > 0:31:46They got a bit of felt, they've used buttons for eyes.

0:31:46 > 0:31:50- I like it, it's completely different to the others.- I think it's great.

0:31:58 > 0:32:01This has been turned inside out. Has it?

0:32:01 > 0:32:03This is for a little girl, I'd say.

0:32:03 > 0:32:05A little hood with leopardskin on.

0:32:05 > 0:32:09- They've had to put this zip in. - It's a new zip, is it? Yeah.- Yeah.

0:32:09 > 0:32:11Doesn't quite meet at the top, but...

0:32:11 > 0:32:15The fit is right, so it's a functioning piece of clothing.

0:32:15 > 0:32:17I really like the leopardskin trim.

0:32:17 > 0:32:19I-I don't love the leopardskin.

0:32:20 > 0:32:24But who's made the most successful child's jacket from a ski-suit?

0:32:24 > 0:32:27In fifth place, it's the green one.

0:32:27 > 0:32:29- It doesn't really fit.- A bit snug!

0:32:29 > 0:32:31It's a little bit snug.

0:32:31 > 0:32:36In fourth place, it is our fur-trimmed duffle.

0:32:36 > 0:32:39Esme particularly loved it - I'm not a huge fur fan.

0:32:39 > 0:32:44Third place is the orange one.

0:32:44 > 0:32:46We loved how the embroidery had been placed on this,

0:32:46 > 0:32:49and it's really cute.

0:32:49 > 0:32:51In second place...

0:32:54 > 0:32:56..it's our pink bird.

0:32:57 > 0:32:59- Rumana.- I love it!- What?!

0:32:59 > 0:33:03It's a very, very fun alteration, and really nicely done.

0:33:03 > 0:33:06There's lots of great elements to it, so well done.

0:33:06 > 0:33:07- Well done.- Thank you.

0:33:07 > 0:33:12And in first place is our '80s bomber jacket.

0:33:12 > 0:33:14APPLAUSE

0:33:14 > 0:33:16Finally!

0:33:18 > 0:33:19- Oh, my God.- I love the shape of it.

0:33:19 > 0:33:22- We both loved the shape of it, actually.- Thank you.

0:33:22 > 0:33:25It just has a kind of great feel to it. It works.

0:33:25 > 0:33:28Well, it's cool. It's a really good alteration.

0:33:28 > 0:33:30- Are you happy?- I'm over the moon!

0:33:30 > 0:33:32- This is really not my speciality. - Very well done.

0:33:32 > 0:33:34Well done to all of you.

0:33:34 > 0:33:36Go home, sleep, relax.

0:33:36 > 0:33:39When you come in tomorrow,

0:33:39 > 0:33:42it is the activewear made-to-measure challenge.

0:33:42 > 0:33:44Goodnight.

0:33:46 > 0:33:51That was my first number one, and it's an alteration challenge.

0:33:51 > 0:33:53That's absolutely nuts.

0:33:53 > 0:33:55I'm just finally happy that I've finally got one.

0:33:55 > 0:33:58I'm really disappointed that I didn't get that first place.

0:33:58 > 0:33:59I think this was the one challenge

0:33:59 > 0:34:01where I could expect to get first place.

0:34:01 > 0:34:03Activewear not normally my thing,

0:34:03 > 0:34:05so this is the week I needed to survive, really.

0:34:05 > 0:34:08I'm going to dream I am in that ski-suit!

0:34:08 > 0:34:09SHE LAUGHS

0:34:17 > 0:34:19There's one final activewear garment to make

0:34:19 > 0:34:23before we discover who's going to make it through to the semifinal.

0:34:23 > 0:34:25Let's be honest, in the quarterfinal,

0:34:25 > 0:34:28it feels like there's often a frontrunner.

0:34:28 > 0:34:30But it sort of feels that it could be anybody's.

0:34:30 > 0:34:32It must be quite confusing for you two.

0:34:32 > 0:34:35Er, more confusing than it usually is, I think.

0:34:35 > 0:34:39It really does feel like absolutely anybody could go this week.

0:34:39 > 0:34:43They're all great, and each week and each day,

0:34:43 > 0:34:46it's from one thing to the next, like this. Whoo!

0:34:46 > 0:34:48So what the hell is going to happen?

0:34:48 > 0:34:50- Morning.- Morning.

0:34:50 > 0:34:54'The last item of activewear will have to be fitted to a real person.'

0:34:54 > 0:34:58It's been a week since I've seen you!

0:34:58 > 0:35:01Welcome back to our models. Thank you so much for being with us today.

0:35:01 > 0:35:06For your made-to-measure, the judges would love you to make a yoga outfit

0:35:06 > 0:35:09and there has to be freedom of movement.

0:35:09 > 0:35:13I don't know if that's yoga, but I did it anyway. Enormous luck!

0:35:13 > 0:35:17You have five and a half hours to make beautiful yoga outfits.

0:35:17 > 0:35:19Your time starts now.

0:35:20 > 0:35:22Right, I want to check the measurements.

0:35:22 > 0:35:25'This is the one challenge the sewers have had a chance

0:35:25 > 0:35:26'to plan and practise.'

0:35:26 > 0:35:28I'm not looking forward to this challenge.

0:35:28 > 0:35:30Again, it's fabrics I'm not very used to.

0:35:30 > 0:35:32'And, as yoga outfits need to move,

0:35:32 > 0:35:35'they're all using fabrics with a four-way stretch.'

0:35:35 > 0:35:39My favourite yoga position is where you lie down at the end and relax.

0:35:39 > 0:35:41Why a yoga outfit?

0:35:41 > 0:35:44Yesterday, we asked them to make a cycle top.

0:35:44 > 0:35:45Some tough techniques, but, actually,

0:35:45 > 0:35:47it was just fitting round a male torso.

0:35:47 > 0:35:50Today, we're asking them to fit a female form which has,

0:35:50 > 0:35:51obviously, far more curves

0:35:51 > 0:35:55so there's a lot more engineering in this challenge today.

0:35:55 > 0:35:59I'm hoping to see panels, ruching and really good fit.

0:35:59 > 0:36:04Yoga clothes have to withstand an enormous amount of stretching

0:36:04 > 0:36:06and all of those seams have to move.

0:36:06 > 0:36:08They have to be incredibly robust.

0:36:09 > 0:36:10Five...

0:36:10 > 0:36:12'As well as measuring their model...'

0:36:12 > 0:36:15Cos I don't want it to be too tight...

0:36:15 > 0:36:17'..the sewers will need to carefully gauge

0:36:17 > 0:36:18'the amount of stretch in the fabric

0:36:18 > 0:36:21'so that the outfit is neither baggy nor constricting.'

0:36:21 > 0:36:25I've got a 25" waist, so I'm going to cut it as a small

0:36:25 > 0:36:27and then adjust as I go once I've got the pieces out.

0:36:27 > 0:36:31So I want them to come to about there, I reckon.

0:36:31 > 0:36:34I can always shorten it once it's on you.

0:36:34 > 0:36:36So, my leggings are actually only made out of two pieces.

0:36:36 > 0:36:40Very, very simple. I think I'll have to play it a little bit safe.

0:36:40 > 0:36:42Rumana's simple two-piece leggings

0:36:42 > 0:36:43will accompany a vest top

0:36:43 > 0:36:46with an added power mesh bra for support.

0:36:46 > 0:36:47It'll have a Y-shaped back

0:36:47 > 0:36:48and contrast trim.

0:36:49 > 0:36:53- Is it binding?- Yes, so that's going to be red Lycra.

0:36:53 > 0:36:55And how are you going to attach that?

0:36:55 > 0:36:57I think I might do it hand-basted first,

0:36:57 > 0:37:01cos that's the thing that I think will look the worst if it goes wrong

0:37:01 > 0:37:03so I'm going to be really careful with that

0:37:03 > 0:37:05- and give myself the most time for that.- OK.

0:37:05 > 0:37:07- But I thought it gave a pop of colour.- No, I like it.

0:37:09 > 0:37:14A good yoga outfit is meant to feel nice and snug.

0:37:14 > 0:37:18You want to make sure you don't fall out of it,

0:37:18 > 0:37:22which is why my top is two layers of this and then a layer of the black

0:37:22 > 0:37:24so it's going to be really nice and thick.

0:37:24 > 0:37:27Jade's making leggings with a contrasting waist band

0:37:27 > 0:37:29and side panels and a crop top

0:37:29 > 0:37:32with six crossover rouleau loop straps.

0:37:32 > 0:37:36Yesterday, my top was slightly stretched out, so that means

0:37:36 > 0:37:42I'm just going to work even harder today to make sure that it isn't.

0:37:42 > 0:37:46- Good morning.- Good morning!- Hello!

0:37:46 > 0:37:49What are you making today?

0:37:49 > 0:37:53OK, I'm making a yoga outfit with tight leggings

0:37:53 > 0:37:57and I'm going to do the top there with just a round neck.

0:37:57 > 0:37:58How are you seaming all of these?

0:37:58 > 0:38:01I'm going to do it on the overlocker.

0:38:01 > 0:38:05- You are?- Yes.- Very wise, I would say.- Yes.

0:38:05 > 0:38:08The contrasting panels in Joyce's full-length leggings

0:38:08 > 0:38:10will be echoed in her raglan sleeve T-shirt,

0:38:10 > 0:38:12shaped with princess seams.

0:38:12 > 0:38:16I'm overlocking the panels in the leggings.

0:38:16 > 0:38:22The overlocker is great for these seams because you don't need

0:38:22 > 0:38:25to finish them with a zigzag stitch and they're stretchy.

0:38:25 > 0:38:27Let's have a go.

0:38:27 > 0:38:31I've used the overlocker and I've made it slightly bigger first

0:38:31 > 0:38:34cos it trims away the seam allowance so if you make it too small,

0:38:34 > 0:38:36there's nothing you can do about it.

0:38:36 > 0:38:37But for her leggings,

0:38:37 > 0:38:41Tracey is planning to overlock using a different kind of stitch.

0:38:41 > 0:38:46I'm just doing a practice piece using the overlocker...

0:38:48 > 0:38:51..to make a flatlock seam, sewn together like that

0:38:51 > 0:38:54and when you pull it, the whole seam flattens out

0:38:54 > 0:38:57so you get a ridge on the outside of your sportswear

0:38:57 > 0:39:00and on the inside, it's visible and it's a decorative element.

0:39:00 > 0:39:02Tracey's decorative flatlock seam

0:39:02 > 0:39:04will be used to join the contrast panel

0:39:04 > 0:39:07down the front and back of her leggings,

0:39:07 > 0:39:10to which she's adding a crisscross detail at the cuff.

0:39:10 > 0:39:13Her matching bra will also be crisscrossed at the back.

0:39:15 > 0:39:17There's about six pieces in these leggings.

0:39:17 > 0:39:20I just thought the ones with the panels were more interesting

0:39:20 > 0:39:23and I need to do something to prove myself today

0:39:23 > 0:39:25after an up and down day yesterday.

0:39:27 > 0:39:30With their leggings loosely constructed...

0:39:30 > 0:39:32Are you ready to try these on?

0:39:32 > 0:39:33Let's sort you out.

0:39:33 > 0:39:34..the sewers can begin gradually

0:39:34 > 0:39:36taking the stretch fabric in.

0:39:36 > 0:39:38I think it's probably a bit baggy.

0:39:38 > 0:39:41This challenge all boils down to how well these garments

0:39:41 > 0:39:45- fit on the body and how well they move on the body.- Yes.

0:39:45 > 0:39:49I'd rather do it too loose and take it in.

0:39:49 > 0:39:51It fits nicely around here so far.

0:39:51 > 0:39:54They need to come in at the ankles about an inch.

0:39:54 > 0:39:59I've got quite a few pins in, but the more pins, the better the fit.

0:39:59 > 0:40:02That's not bad, actually, is it?

0:40:02 > 0:40:06I've turned it up and I'm not doing that too tight.

0:40:06 > 0:40:08I'm going to do that one a bit longer.

0:40:08 > 0:40:12It's not sticking out anywhere on the waist, is it? Brilliant.

0:40:13 > 0:40:15I'm being controversial with my yoga outfit.

0:40:15 > 0:40:18I think I'm the only person who's not making a pair of tight leggings

0:40:18 > 0:40:20for the bottom half, which is slightly worrying.

0:40:20 > 0:40:22Charlotte's loose-fitting leggings

0:40:22 > 0:40:25accompany a drape top with cross straps

0:40:25 > 0:40:27and an integrated sports bra.

0:40:27 > 0:40:30Personally, I wouldn't want to wear tight leggings to do yoga in.

0:40:30 > 0:40:33I would want something that would sort of stop people

0:40:33 > 0:40:35from examining my bottom in any great detail

0:40:35 > 0:40:38so there's just a bit more space in them than other people have got.

0:40:38 > 0:40:42OK, it's going to be a bitch cos of all the pins,

0:40:42 > 0:40:44but we'll take it off really carefully.

0:40:44 > 0:40:47If the sewers think they have a perfect fit...

0:40:47 > 0:40:50I'm just going to shave it off from the inside seam.

0:40:50 > 0:40:52..there's no turning back.

0:40:52 > 0:40:54As it finishes their seams,

0:40:54 > 0:40:58the overlocker will cut away any excess fabric.

0:40:58 > 0:41:03Look! All of that! That's how much has been taken in.

0:41:03 > 0:41:04They work!

0:41:04 > 0:41:07- Oh, my God! - SHE LAUGHS

0:41:07 > 0:41:10They look all right, don't they?

0:41:10 > 0:41:12Yeah, OK. Happy, happy.

0:41:13 > 0:41:15(Oh, I'm so happy.)

0:41:16 > 0:41:18They FIT!

0:41:18 > 0:41:21But for Tracey, there's more to worry about than just fit.

0:41:21 > 0:41:28This exciting thing is the cuff on the bottom of my yoga pants

0:41:28 > 0:41:32so it starts life like this and ends up like that

0:41:32 > 0:41:36so I've got to sew these down and then you cross them over

0:41:36 > 0:41:38and sew them to the other side

0:41:38 > 0:41:42and then you kind of bag it out, really, so you end up with a cuff.

0:41:42 > 0:41:45But then when the leg's in it, it will stretch.

0:41:45 > 0:41:51- Sewers, we're halfway through in yoga world.- Er, bra next?

0:41:51 > 0:41:55This is the bra that goes under the drapey top, so it needs to be

0:41:55 > 0:41:59nice and tight against the body to hold everything...in position.

0:41:59 > 0:42:01When you're doing downward-facing dog,

0:42:01 > 0:42:03you don't want your bosoms falling out of your top.

0:42:03 > 0:42:05Sports bra needs to be tight.

0:42:05 > 0:42:08It needs to fit round the side seams and round her boobies.

0:42:08 > 0:42:13To get a tight fit under the bust, the top needs additional support.

0:42:13 > 0:42:16The bust section has to gather to fit the band section,

0:42:16 > 0:42:17which has to stretch.

0:42:17 > 0:42:19So you're kind of fighting

0:42:19 > 0:42:22to get all that fabric into just that space.

0:42:22 > 0:42:24I'm looking for it to fit a lot better

0:42:24 > 0:42:26than anything I normally make does!

0:42:26 > 0:42:30- Hello, Rumana.- Hello! - Where have you got to?

0:42:30 > 0:42:33So I'm just doing the folded elastic of my power mesh bra.

0:42:33 > 0:42:36And you've pinned that elastic evenly, I presume?

0:42:36 > 0:42:38- Yes.- You're zigzagging it.

0:42:38 > 0:42:41You don't feel comfortable doing that on the overlocker?

0:42:41 > 0:42:42I know it's probably better,

0:42:42 > 0:42:45but I'm doing a lot of things I've never done before

0:42:45 > 0:42:48- and I'd like to do something I can do.- OK.

0:42:51 > 0:42:54Joyce has chosen to make this final challenge even harder.

0:42:54 > 0:42:58I'm doing a raglan sleeve where it comes from the neck.

0:42:58 > 0:43:02She's the only sewer attempting a top with sleeves.

0:43:02 > 0:43:07I need it a bit closer there. We don't want a gappy neck, do we?

0:43:07 > 0:43:09It's quite a straightforward outfit,

0:43:09 > 0:43:13which is why I want to get the fit just right.

0:43:13 > 0:43:19I need a coverstitch machine for the hem parts. Oh!

0:43:19 > 0:43:22All the sewers have decided to use the coverstitch machine

0:43:22 > 0:43:24to neaten the edges and hems of their garments.

0:43:24 > 0:43:29I am coverstitching basically round the arm holes of the top

0:43:29 > 0:43:35and round the neck edge just to keep it all where it's meant to be.

0:43:35 > 0:43:40I've only used the coverstitch yesterday so I feel a bit brave.

0:43:40 > 0:43:43- Hello.- Hello.- Right, what's happening with you?

0:43:43 > 0:43:44You're just in time

0:43:44 > 0:43:47- to catch me swearing at a coverstitch machine.- Right.

0:43:47 > 0:43:49- So, what are you coverstitching? - I'm coverstitching...

0:43:49 > 0:43:54- This is the arm opening, it's not really...- OK, well, that looks good.

0:43:54 > 0:43:56Yes, it's sort of a second attempt.

0:43:56 > 0:43:59And then I've got the neckline and the other arm hole

0:43:59 > 0:44:01- and the hem and then on the back as well.- It will look nice.

0:44:01 > 0:44:03I know, I know. Well, the alternative

0:44:03 > 0:44:05was to turn it over and zigzag it

0:44:05 > 0:44:07and that would have looked a bit amateur hour.

0:44:07 > 0:44:09I agree.

0:44:11 > 0:44:16Sewers, one hour left. I'm going to throw this word in - Ashtanga.

0:44:16 > 0:44:19I don't know what it means.

0:44:21 > 0:44:24I don't think I'll ever be a fan of stretching, I'm afraid.

0:44:27 > 0:44:29- There's a band that comes underneath.- Oh, OK.

0:44:29 > 0:44:31You'll not be hanging out the bottom, don't worry.

0:44:31 > 0:44:37- Joyce.- Claudia!- How are you finding this?- Well, I've finished this.

0:44:37 > 0:44:42- Let me see.- That's the top.- Oh, now, that looks lovely. That looks...

0:44:42 > 0:44:46- Like, suddenly, I want to lunge. - Is that what you do in yoga?

0:44:46 > 0:44:48And that's the trousers.

0:44:48 > 0:44:50That's nice. So, what are you doing now?

0:44:50 > 0:44:53- Well, I'm just trying to fashion... - Are you making a headscarf?

0:44:53 > 0:44:56Well, yes. No, I'm trying to fashion some sort of cardigan.

0:44:56 > 0:44:58- You've already done two pieces. - I know, but...

0:44:58 > 0:45:01- I'll give you a head massage. - Would you?- Relax!- Ooh!

0:45:06 > 0:45:10I'm going to finish off the edges of my top with a binding strip

0:45:10 > 0:45:11that I've made myself.

0:45:11 > 0:45:14My binding is a little bit tricky to sew around the curve,

0:45:14 > 0:45:17but I have to be really careful of not overdoing it

0:45:17 > 0:45:19and stretching out the neckline.

0:45:19 > 0:45:22I'm just pinning the straps on at the moment to get the fit right

0:45:22 > 0:45:26and then I'll zigzag them when I've got them in the right place.

0:45:29 > 0:45:33Jade's straps require more work than anyone else's.

0:45:33 > 0:45:35This is a very technical process.

0:45:35 > 0:45:38She needs to make six rouleau loops.

0:45:38 > 0:45:41Cut a long bit of fabric, fold it in half,

0:45:41 > 0:45:45then you overlock it and then just pull it through.

0:45:45 > 0:45:51- What are you doing now, Joyce? - I am making a cardigan.- A cardigan?!

0:45:51 > 0:45:56Do not be impressed because when you'll see it, you just won't be.

0:45:56 > 0:45:58I wish I'd had time to make a cardigan!

0:45:59 > 0:46:02Sewers, you have 15 minutes left.

0:46:02 > 0:46:04SHE GASPS

0:46:04 > 0:46:0615 minutes to make your beautiful yoga outfits

0:46:06 > 0:46:09and then there will be a catwalk show.

0:46:09 > 0:46:12Right! Calm down, calm down.

0:46:12 > 0:46:15I'm trying to get them in the right place.

0:46:16 > 0:46:18Yep, that'll do.

0:46:18 > 0:46:20It's really not going very well.

0:46:21 > 0:46:25See, it's not even catching it on the other side.

0:46:25 > 0:46:27SHE EXHALES

0:46:27 > 0:46:30Having to unpick my stitching.

0:46:31 > 0:46:34Nearly there, don't rush and cock it up now.

0:46:38 > 0:46:42It's not very good, but who cares at this stage?

0:46:42 > 0:46:45Lift it slightly...

0:46:45 > 0:46:48That is exactly what I do under pressure - I just talk to myself.

0:46:48 > 0:46:52It's just not working out well. What can you do?

0:46:52 > 0:46:54I am thinking about where I'm placing the straps

0:46:54 > 0:46:58because they want to be in the exact same place.

0:46:58 > 0:47:02It's not the best of bindings... Oh, that's come off there. Fantastic(!)

0:47:02 > 0:47:04That's exactly what I needed.

0:47:04 > 0:47:09Two minutes, sewers, two minutes. You're going to be all right?

0:47:09 > 0:47:12- Jade, what are you doing? - Sewing up a little hole.

0:47:16 > 0:47:17Turn around.

0:47:17 > 0:47:20That needs to be flipped down.

0:47:20 > 0:47:24- Spin. Look at the back. - Oh, look at the back!

0:47:24 > 0:47:27It's a waterfall front, so...

0:47:27 > 0:47:30Yeah, it's completely overstretched.

0:47:30 > 0:47:34Sewers, well done! That is it - time is up.

0:47:34 > 0:47:39- Please stop fiddling. - There we go - perfect.

0:47:41 > 0:47:43I'm really proud of the fact

0:47:43 > 0:47:46that I've managed to use all the weird machines.

0:47:46 > 0:47:48Oh, I'm so happy it's over!

0:47:48 > 0:47:50I hope this wins me a place in the semifinal.

0:47:50 > 0:47:53Everybody wants to go through. I really want to go through.

0:47:53 > 0:47:54We'll see, won't we?

0:47:56 > 0:47:58# Bend me, shape me

0:47:58 > 0:48:00# Anyway you want me

0:48:00 > 0:48:04# Long as you love me, it's all right... #

0:48:04 > 0:48:08Five fitted yoga outfits made in just five and a half hours.

0:48:08 > 0:48:13# You've got the power to turn on the light... #

0:48:15 > 0:48:20Well, Charlotte, you're the only one who hasn't done

0:48:20 > 0:48:23a completely tight-fitting outfit

0:48:23 > 0:48:26and, actually, I think it's pretty successful.

0:48:26 > 0:48:28I agree. I think it works really nicely, actually.

0:48:28 > 0:48:33Let's have a little look. So that feels like a good fit.

0:48:33 > 0:48:36- Now, I think these straps are very effective.- They're very effective.

0:48:36 > 0:48:41If you look here, can you see how it's bagging here?

0:48:41 > 0:48:45If you'd done that, it would have got rid of that.

0:48:45 > 0:48:47OK, let's look at the fit of the bra.

0:48:47 > 0:48:51So I'm afraid I'm going to lift this up. Oh, it fits really well.

0:48:52 > 0:48:56Yeah, that seems like a good fit there.

0:48:56 > 0:48:58It's a great-looking outfit, it moves very nicely,

0:48:58 > 0:49:00the fit's good.

0:49:00 > 0:49:02There's a lot of positives in this.

0:49:02 > 0:49:05# Hey, Mama's doing the twist

0:49:05 > 0:49:08# Everything's different in our house

0:49:08 > 0:49:11# Now that Mama's doing the twist... #

0:49:11 > 0:49:14It's very well sewn, very neatly sewn, but, to me,

0:49:14 > 0:49:18it's neither very form-fitting nor loose-fitting.

0:49:18 > 0:49:21It just sort of feels somewhere lost in the middle.

0:49:21 > 0:49:23It's loose on the ankles.

0:49:23 > 0:49:29I mean, that's a lot of extra there and also I think it's too long.

0:49:29 > 0:49:32It sort of looks a bit like a trouser.

0:49:32 > 0:49:36Yes, I'm not convinced about the proportion of this top.

0:49:36 > 0:49:42- I don't know if it'll be nicer shorter or longer.- I agree with you.

0:49:42 > 0:49:46Also, you haven't quite made the binding tight enough

0:49:46 > 0:49:49and also you've got your wrap.

0:49:49 > 0:49:51Yes.

0:49:53 > 0:49:55Again, I think the proportion of it...

0:49:55 > 0:49:58- You've told me you were doing this sort of waterfall front.- Yes.

0:49:58 > 0:50:00It's a pretty good piece.

0:50:00 > 0:50:03I mean, it's a very bouncy fabric

0:50:03 > 0:50:05and you've managed it extremely well.

0:50:05 > 0:50:07It's just the fit for me.

0:50:07 > 0:50:09- OK.- Yep.

0:50:09 > 0:50:13# Bend it, bend it just a little bit

0:50:13 > 0:50:18# Take it easy, show you're liking it... #

0:50:19 > 0:50:23The overall impression is that it's a very good fit, wouldn't you say?

0:50:23 > 0:50:28- I think it's an exceptional fit. - Yeah.- I mean, those leggings are...

0:50:28 > 0:50:31They are tight, but there is still movement

0:50:31 > 0:50:36and they are absolutely bang on at the ankles.

0:50:37 > 0:50:41- Turn around.- Can we turn you round? - They look great over the bottom.

0:50:41 > 0:50:45Yep. The fit across the chest is really pretty good.

0:50:45 > 0:50:47It's sitting very neatly over the bust.

0:50:47 > 0:50:52- The straps, they're not 100% evenly spaced.- No, they're not.

0:50:52 > 0:50:54They're not evenly spaced, actually.

0:50:54 > 0:50:58But the effect of them is really vivid and very strong.

0:50:58 > 0:51:00- You know, I think you've done a brilliant job.- Yes.

0:51:00 > 0:51:03I think it absolutely nails the brief.

0:51:03 > 0:51:05- Well done.- Thank you.- Well done.

0:51:18 > 0:51:21The fit on the trousers looks pretty good.

0:51:21 > 0:51:24There's a little bit here on the front.

0:51:24 > 0:51:27You've done this technique with the overlocker.

0:51:27 > 0:51:32I would have preferred it if you'd reversed it and done it

0:51:32 > 0:51:35so that the underneath of this stitch was on the top.

0:51:35 > 0:51:38I think it makes a stronger statement about it.

0:51:39 > 0:51:43- This is not quite tight enough. - Slightly too big at the front.

0:51:43 > 0:51:45And it's shooting up as well.

0:51:45 > 0:51:49I think it's a little small, actually, across the bust.

0:51:50 > 0:51:52They're quite tight, these loops.

0:51:52 > 0:51:56- I would have preferred if the loops had been in this colour.- Yep.

0:51:56 > 0:51:59- And the cuff had been in that colour.- Right.

0:51:59 > 0:52:03It sits really nicely across the shoulder blades.

0:52:03 > 0:52:05It's going around the shoulder blades,

0:52:05 > 0:52:07which is exactly what we want from a cross strap.

0:52:07 > 0:52:11I really like it. I think it's very effective.

0:52:11 > 0:52:14# Hey-hey, little girl

0:52:14 > 0:52:17# Do you wanna twist?

0:52:17 > 0:52:20# Hey, little girl... #

0:52:20 > 0:52:22I really like your choice of fabrics -

0:52:22 > 0:52:24the black and white print

0:52:24 > 0:52:26and the black top with the highlights of red.

0:52:26 > 0:52:28If we start with the leggings,

0:52:28 > 0:52:33they look like a pretty good fit.

0:52:33 > 0:52:35Sorry!

0:52:35 > 0:52:39And slightly loose at the ankle.

0:52:40 > 0:52:45My big issue is with the binding, just the armholes.

0:52:45 > 0:52:47Either you've pulled it out of shape

0:52:47 > 0:52:50or you just haven't made it short enough and drawn it in enough.

0:52:50 > 0:52:53Yes, you need to make the binding smaller than the arm hole

0:52:53 > 0:52:58and that will pull it in so if I go like this,

0:52:58 > 0:53:00if the binding had been that much shorter,

0:53:00 > 0:53:02- it would have laid flat.- OK.

0:53:02 > 0:53:04And because it's in a contrast colour,

0:53:04 > 0:53:06it really, really shouts at you.

0:53:06 > 0:53:08Yeah.

0:53:12 > 0:53:17Well done to all of you - five brilliant outfits. Go, have a snack.

0:53:17 > 0:53:18When you come back in,

0:53:18 > 0:53:20the judges will announce the garment of the week

0:53:20 > 0:53:24and they'll also announce, which I think actually is impossible,

0:53:24 > 0:53:28who will be leaving the Sewing Bee. Thanks very much.

0:53:28 > 0:53:29Well done, off you go.

0:53:33 > 0:53:35INDISTINCT CONVERSATION

0:53:36 > 0:53:38It's always very tense at this time

0:53:38 > 0:53:40when you're about to find out who's going home,

0:53:40 > 0:53:44but now there's only five of us left, it's even more noticeable.

0:53:45 > 0:53:50They always love the colours or the style that I put together.

0:53:50 > 0:53:53I think maybe I should stick to designing rather than sewing.

0:53:55 > 0:53:57I did think I had a good fit,

0:53:57 > 0:54:01but my good fit obviously is not what they were looking for.

0:54:01 > 0:54:04They were looking for skin-tight. I don't do skin-tight.

0:54:06 > 0:54:09This week was really, really difficult.

0:54:09 > 0:54:12Lots of people had never sewn this fabric.

0:54:12 > 0:54:15Lots of people hadn't used these machines

0:54:15 > 0:54:17so it was really, really difficult.

0:54:17 > 0:54:21Let's talk about who is going to leave.

0:54:21 > 0:54:23If we start at the beginning,

0:54:23 > 0:54:25I think Joyce did a good job on this,

0:54:25 > 0:54:27but we put Rumana's at the bottom,

0:54:27 > 0:54:31- but we both really like Rumana's pink flamingo outfit.- I loved it.

0:54:31 > 0:54:34Actually, Rumana's yoga outfit was a pretty good fit

0:54:34 > 0:54:37and a really nice choice and very well executed.

0:54:37 > 0:54:39It's just this binding that let it down.

0:54:39 > 0:54:43Joyce's yoga outfit, it was well sewn, but it really didn't fit.

0:54:43 > 0:54:47It looked sort of... It looked like nothing, really.

0:54:47 > 0:54:50It didn't look like sportswear. I think it could be Joyce.

0:54:50 > 0:54:54- I think it could be Rumana.- Yeah. - I just think we need a bit of time.

0:54:54 > 0:54:59It's really close, really, really close. We need to conflab.

0:55:05 > 0:55:07A huge well done to all of you.

0:55:07 > 0:55:11First bits first, the lovely news - garment of the week is...

0:55:12 > 0:55:16This week, our favourite garment or garments...

0:55:17 > 0:55:19- ..is this one. - APPLAUSE

0:55:19 > 0:55:21Well done, Jade!

0:55:21 > 0:55:25- That's lovely.- Twice in a row, Jade.

0:55:25 > 0:55:27The fit was brilliant,

0:55:27 > 0:55:30the overall impression was just absolutely spot-on.

0:55:30 > 0:55:32It was just a very, very professional piece of sewing

0:55:32 > 0:55:33so well done.

0:55:33 > 0:55:36- Are you happy?- I'm over the moon, I can't believe it.

0:55:36 > 0:55:39Good girl.

0:55:39 > 0:55:43Now, the really much less pleasant situation,

0:55:43 > 0:55:50which is somebody has to leave the Sewing Bee and that person is...

0:55:54 > 0:55:58- It's Rumana. I'm sorry! - It's all right.

0:55:58 > 0:56:03- I thought that was me, Rumana.- No! - Oh, I'm really sorry, darling.

0:56:03 > 0:56:07- I mean, I was expecting to go in week one.- At least you got this far!

0:56:07 > 0:56:09Exactly.

0:56:09 > 0:56:11Rumana has great personal style.

0:56:11 > 0:56:13She creates beautiful-looking clothes,

0:56:13 > 0:56:16but this week was about the ability

0:56:16 > 0:56:18to handle probably the most difficult fabric

0:56:18 > 0:56:20we've ever given them on the Sewing Bee.

0:56:20 > 0:56:22- Can I give you a hug?- Of course!

0:56:22 > 0:56:24Thank you so much, I've enjoyed it so much.

0:56:24 > 0:56:28I definitely think the stretch fabrics got the better of Rumana.

0:56:28 > 0:56:31She's got a style about her which I really liked.

0:56:33 > 0:56:37I started sewing because I kind of got fed up of people

0:56:37 > 0:56:39telling me how I should dress.

0:56:39 > 0:56:42There was a time when I started wearing a scarf

0:56:42 > 0:56:44that I was ashamed of the way I looked.

0:56:44 > 0:56:46I'm going to start crying now!

0:56:50 > 0:56:53I've actually Superglued you to me!

0:56:53 > 0:56:57I think people see me as someone quite confident

0:56:57 > 0:57:00and quite comfortable in their skin and I wasn't always

0:57:00 > 0:57:02and I think sewing let me be that person.

0:57:02 > 0:57:04It let me have my own style

0:57:04 > 0:57:07and I think, with that, my confidence has grown

0:57:07 > 0:57:11and so, for people who don't know if they want to sew,

0:57:11 > 0:57:15I would encourage you to sew, because it lets you feel beautiful,

0:57:15 > 0:57:19it lets you look beautiful cos everyone is beautiful

0:57:19 > 0:57:22and I think I've got that confidence from sewing.

0:57:29 > 0:57:32Being in the semifinal is amazing,

0:57:32 > 0:57:35but it's horrible that it comes at the price of other people leaving.

0:57:35 > 0:57:38I really, genuinely just deal with one thing at a time

0:57:38 > 0:57:42and this is why, when you're saying you're a semifinalist,

0:57:42 > 0:57:43I'm thinking, "What?"

0:57:43 > 0:57:46I'm looking around, you know, "Who's a semifinalist?"

0:57:46 > 0:57:51When I started this, I didn't think I'd get this far, so, you know,

0:57:51 > 0:57:56to achieve this has been an absolutely brilliant experience.

0:57:57 > 0:57:58(Gosh!)

0:58:00 > 0:58:02That's bonkers, isn't it?

0:58:02 > 0:58:04- Next time...- Gordon Bennett!

0:58:04 > 0:58:06..the four remaining sewers...

0:58:06 > 0:58:08Pressure's on, hands are shaking.

0:58:08 > 0:58:11..face three of the most technically demanding challenges...

0:58:11 > 0:58:15- Seriously?- ..Esme and Patrick have ever set.- It looks like a map.

0:58:15 > 0:58:16What is that?

0:58:16 > 0:58:20But who will book their place in the grand final?

0:58:20 > 0:58:21Taxi for Tracey, I think!

0:58:21 > 0:58:22'And who will fall...'

0:58:22 > 0:58:24We're so upset about it.

0:58:24 > 0:58:26'..at the final hurdle?'

0:58:26 > 0:58:30This is the most ridiculous thing...EVER.
