0:00:04 > 0:00:08Welcome to Crash Course. This week, I'm in Oregon.

0:00:08 > 0:00:11And around these parts, that is a weed whacker!

0:00:17 > 0:00:21Oh, there are so many ways to die doing that.

0:00:21 > 0:00:26I've driven just about every high powered vehicle there is,

0:00:26 > 0:00:30but that was just for fun. The world's biggest, baddest vehicles are made to work.

0:00:30 > 0:00:33So, now I've decided to travel across the United States

0:00:33 > 0:00:36to see if I can conquer the monsters of the work site.

0:00:36 > 0:00:39I'll have just three days to learn how to handle

0:00:39 > 0:00:42these complex and dangerous machines

0:00:42 > 0:00:44that normally take years of training to master.

0:00:44 > 0:00:49And in the end we'll find out if I'm good enough to get the job done.

0:00:51 > 0:00:53I'm at the Cross and Crown Logging Company

0:00:53 > 0:00:56where I've given myself three days to learn how to use

0:00:56 > 0:00:59their three key pieces of highly specialized machinery -

0:00:59 > 0:01:03the feller-buncher, that can cut and lift a fully grown tree.

0:01:03 > 0:01:07The dangle head processor that can process that tree into a log.

0:01:07 > 0:01:10And the loader that loads them onto a truck ready for the mill.

0:01:10 > 0:01:13At the end of three days of my final exam,

0:01:13 > 0:01:16I'll have to prove that I can cut, process, and load logs onto a truck.

0:01:16 > 0:01:20The whole job, I'll have just 15 minutes to do with it.

0:01:20 > 0:01:23And if I manage it, then, and only then,

0:01:23 > 0:01:26can I call myself a lumberjack.

0:01:28 > 0:01:33Look. There it is, I mean that's...

0:01:33 > 0:01:34A beautiful sight.

0:01:34 > 0:01:37- This is where you work? - This is my office.

0:01:37 > 0:01:39- It's not bad a office, is it? - Not bad.

0:01:39 > 0:01:42When you first glance, I would look and just say,

0:01:42 > 0:01:45"Wow, there's beautiful tree-clad hills, isn't it pretty?"

0:01:45 > 0:01:47Then you look closer and realize, hang on a second,

0:01:47 > 0:01:50there's patches that are cleared, patches with new trees on.

0:01:50 > 0:01:54This is a working environment, isn't it? This is... this doesn't just happen.

0:01:54 > 0:01:57What we're doing is we're basically doing a generational harvest.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00We come in here. We'll harvest trees at about 40 to 50 years old.

0:02:00 > 0:02:03And then we'll put the trees back in the ground at 18 months.

0:02:03 > 0:02:06But you get, I suppose, like everybody else who's involved

0:02:06 > 0:02:10in this sort of stewardship of the land, of the natural environment.

0:02:10 > 0:02:13You get people saying, "Hang on, you're stripping trees out",

0:02:13 > 0:02:16but this landscape wouldn't look like this if you weren't farming.

0:02:16 > 0:02:19No. And that's what's really hard for people to grasp -

0:02:19 > 0:02:23we're doing it sustainably. For every one we take off,

0:02:23 > 0:02:27we plant five or six. What I see out here is something that I've been a part of.

0:02:27 > 0:02:2930 years from now or 40, when I'm gone,

0:02:29 > 0:02:33my kids will have the opportunity to be part of this,

0:02:33 > 0:02:37so it means a lot to me. I want to do it the right way.

0:02:37 > 0:02:39What am I looking at here? Cos...

0:02:39 > 0:02:42Right here, you're looking at what we call a skyline

0:02:42 > 0:02:45coming off of a yarder. They have a cable that they

0:02:45 > 0:02:49put around each log that's out here on the hill side.

0:02:49 > 0:02:53And they tie it onto the carriage, as you can see it coming up right there.

0:02:53 > 0:02:57Your assignment is going to be, as a greenhorn,

0:02:57 > 0:03:00you'll be down there climbing a tree and when you get into the tree,

0:03:00 > 0:03:03we're going to have you go up the tree about 50 feet, hang a block,

0:03:03 > 0:03:06so we can hang that skyline that we call the skyline

0:03:06 > 0:03:08in the block in the tree.

0:03:08 > 0:03:12Let me just get back to this going up a tree bit. So there's a machine,

0:03:12 > 0:03:16it's like a lift, that's got a cage in it? How am I going up the tree?

0:03:16 > 0:03:21- You're going to climb up a tree with a belt,- Right. I haven't climbed a tree for a lot of years.

0:03:21 > 0:03:24Well, this is your first assignment. Before you can do anything

0:03:24 > 0:03:28as a greenhorn you're going to have to go old school

0:03:28 > 0:03:31- to show to me that you can do this. - Climb a tree?- Climb a tree.

0:03:31 > 0:03:33First thing, old school.

0:03:33 > 0:03:35Climb a tree. OK. One thing, not really good with heights.

0:03:37 > 0:03:40Richard, here's your tree. Right here.

0:03:40 > 0:03:42I was so hoping you were going to say it was smaller.

0:03:42 > 0:03:45That's the one, that's next... ready for the next skyline road.

0:03:45 > 0:03:47You see that yellow tape up there?

0:03:47 > 0:03:50- Yeah.- OK. That's where you go. Do you see that block up there?

0:03:50 > 0:03:53There's a block up there. You got to put the rope through the block.

0:03:53 > 0:03:56First thing you do is you put spurs on.

0:03:56 > 0:03:57- OK.- Does that feel good?

0:03:57 > 0:04:00This feels faintly sort of medieval.

0:04:00 > 0:04:02All right. You ready?

0:04:02 > 0:04:05Really, no. I hate heights.

0:04:05 > 0:04:09- Oh, that's a big tree. Isn't it a big tree?- Yeah.

0:04:09 > 0:04:12- OK. So I'm coming close to the tree.- OK.

0:04:12 > 0:04:15With which I am going to become one.

0:04:15 > 0:04:18You know that feeling when you're really confident about something?

0:04:18 > 0:04:22- I don't have that.- OK, you're ready. Here we go.

0:04:22 > 0:04:24I'm not an especially big man.

0:04:24 > 0:04:27I feel very, very small indeed right now.

0:04:27 > 0:04:29You'll feel really good when you get to the top.

0:04:29 > 0:04:33- Yeah.- It's going to be the super, super feeling.

0:04:33 > 0:04:37Yeah. OK. Right. So my first step. I'll just...like that?

0:04:37 > 0:04:40Yeah, just go like that. And then flip your belt ahead.

0:04:40 > 0:04:43And then my second step. Oh, this is horrible.

0:04:43 > 0:04:45- Yeah. Lean ahead.- Lean in.- Lean in?

0:04:45 > 0:04:48And then flip the belt rope up. And flip the rope up.

0:04:48 > 0:04:51One more time. Try it again.

0:04:51 > 0:04:53I don't trust the spikes.

0:04:53 > 0:04:55Do you feel too far away from the tree?

0:04:55 > 0:04:58Uh, I feel too damn close to the tree.

0:04:58 > 0:05:03I'd like to be several miles from the tree.

0:05:03 > 0:05:05There you go. One more. One more. Get it up higher.

0:05:05 > 0:05:07- Ah.- There you go.

0:05:07 > 0:05:09Remember, the ropes got to be above you. That's the easiest way.

0:05:09 > 0:05:11- Yeah.- Right about at eye level.

0:05:11 > 0:05:14It's really what's below me that's where I...right.

0:05:14 > 0:05:16Can't get it out.

0:05:16 > 0:05:18Baby steps. Baby steps.

0:05:18 > 0:05:21- That's a baby step there. OK. - Perfect.

0:05:21 > 0:05:23- Oh. This is unpleasant. - Yeah. Baby steps.

0:05:23 > 0:05:26I am nearly three feet off the ground.

0:05:26 > 0:05:29You got a little ways more to go. Lean forward. One more.

0:05:29 > 0:05:31Yeah. There you go.

0:05:31 > 0:05:34You're getting the timing. It's everything.

0:05:34 > 0:05:39Perfect. Look at that. Step one. Step two.

0:05:39 > 0:05:41Lean forward. There you go.

0:05:41 > 0:05:44- So, there goes the flip. - There you go. Perfect.

0:05:44 > 0:05:48Oh. I looked over my shoulder.

0:05:48 > 0:05:50I shouldn't have done that.

0:05:50 > 0:05:54Um. Oh, God. Wobbly legs. Come on. Oh, ho, ho.

0:05:54 > 0:05:56You're doing exceedingly well.

0:05:56 > 0:06:00Oh, good. Good. Ugh, come on. Keep moving. Yeah.

0:06:00 > 0:06:05I'm getting a little scared. Come on, keep moving.

0:06:05 > 0:06:07- Whoa!- You're almost there.

0:06:07 > 0:06:10Huh. I'm not good with heights.

0:06:10 > 0:06:15I'm not thinking about it. Think about the job. Here to do a job.

0:06:15 > 0:06:21Nearly there. Don't go now. Don't stop.

0:06:21 > 0:06:24Urgh. Yeah.

0:06:24 > 0:06:29- Almost there. See the...- Yeah. - See the block.- Uh. Yeah.

0:06:29 > 0:06:31I think one more of flip, you should be about ready.

0:06:31 > 0:06:32Ugh!

0:06:32 > 0:06:33Take the half back to the line.

0:06:33 > 0:06:35Now, lean back. Put that rope through there.

0:06:35 > 0:06:37And spring it down to us. You can come down.

0:06:37 > 0:06:42OK. I've got this rope now - won't fit through the block.

0:06:42 > 0:06:46I can't quite get it. Uh. Don't panic. Got it.

0:06:46 > 0:06:50- It's through the block. Feeding it down. - Throw it back down to us.

0:06:50 > 0:06:53Oh, that's a lot of rope. Which means I'm a long way up.

0:06:53 > 0:06:55Perfect. That's it. Yeah, that's it. Good job.

0:06:55 > 0:07:01OK. We got that machine ready for you. You got to get down, though.

0:07:01 > 0:07:02Yeah. That feels bad.

0:07:02 > 0:07:09When I was I kid, ugh, I saw a guys going up telegraph poles with spikes on.

0:07:09 > 0:07:13And I always wanted to try it. I was wrong. Ugh!

0:07:15 > 0:07:19That's the easiest flip you'll do right there.

0:07:19 > 0:07:21THEY LAUGH

0:07:21 > 0:07:23That was...

0:07:23 > 0:07:27- We're proud of you. - ..truly horrible!

0:07:27 > 0:07:30- Right. - Can I use a machine now?

0:07:30 > 0:07:31You can. We're ready.

0:07:31 > 0:07:33Right. Lead on. Where are the vehicles?

0:07:33 > 0:07:37OK. Right up here with the beer. Root beer.

0:07:37 > 0:07:40Well, I guess I had to do that to find out what it feels like

0:07:40 > 0:07:47to be an old school lumberjack and now I know I want to be a new school lumberjack.

0:07:47 > 0:07:52One that gets to drive a big scary machine, who doesn't have to climb a tree.

0:07:55 > 0:07:56This week I'm in Oregon.

0:07:56 > 0:08:00I'm spending time with the Cross & Crown Timber Company.

0:08:00 > 0:08:03Where I've tasked myself with learning to use

0:08:03 > 0:08:06the highly specialized machinery they operate to harvest timber.

0:08:06 > 0:08:08Today, I'm being trained on the feller-buncher

0:08:08 > 0:08:11that can cut and lift a fully grown tree.

0:08:11 > 0:08:17This is one of the three machines I need to master if I'm gonna pass my final exam

0:08:17 > 0:08:19and earn the right to call myself a lumberjack.

0:08:20 > 0:08:22What is this?

0:08:22 > 0:08:25This is one of the largest hot saws in the world.

0:08:25 > 0:08:28And then there's a big arm? But then at the end of it,

0:08:28 > 0:08:32this is really the business end.

0:08:32 > 0:08:34This is where all the action happens.

0:08:34 > 0:08:37And this is called a felling head.

0:08:37 > 0:08:40And it goes around about 215 miles an hour. And once it gets up to speed,

0:08:40 > 0:08:43the actual weight of the blades keeps it going around.

0:08:43 > 0:08:45- So that's the saw in the hot saw? - In the hot saw.

0:08:45 > 0:08:48Couldn't help but notice there's a lot of other stuff going on.

0:08:48 > 0:08:52We have two sets of arms. These are your accumulator arms.

0:08:52 > 0:08:56They're actually spring-loaded. And that helps you get multiple trees at one time.

0:08:56 > 0:08:59So, the idea of this is it can be pushed up to a tree,

0:08:59 > 0:09:01- give it a little hug, and cut it off.- Yep.

0:09:01 > 0:09:05And then you've got a tree not attached to anything. What happens then?

0:09:05 > 0:09:08Then you can just literally pick it up, move it around.

0:09:08 > 0:09:11Put it anywhere you want, and most of the time, we put it all in piles.

0:09:11 > 0:09:13About a second?

0:09:13 > 0:09:15A second to three seconds.

0:09:15 > 0:09:17- What about full grown ones?- Exactly.

0:09:17 > 0:09:20All right. That I have to see.

0:09:26 > 0:09:29Watch! Here we go. There's one, done.

0:09:29 > 0:09:33- So the sawing noise... Done? - Done. That's it.

0:09:33 > 0:09:36So, now he's got a clutch of... one, two, three... four, five, six. He got six trunks.

0:09:36 > 0:09:41Six trees. And he's gonna pile that in one pile. Yup.

0:09:41 > 0:09:43Is there a danger that it could just fall over?

0:09:43 > 0:09:46- It could.- Watching that machine work here, again,

0:09:46 > 0:09:50- this business of this being a form of agriculture...- Right.

0:09:50 > 0:09:54When you see it just snipping the trees off like that, you get a better sense of that.

0:09:54 > 0:09:57Yes. It's getting them for harvest.

0:09:57 > 0:09:59So, what you're gonna operate there is a tract machine,

0:09:59 > 0:10:02- which is complicated in itself. - Right.- A boom,

0:10:02 > 0:10:04- which extends with two joints in it.- Yep.

0:10:04 > 0:10:07- The head itself, well, it can be pivoted.- Right.

0:10:07 > 0:10:11- The cab that can be pivoted to self-level.- Right.

0:10:11 > 0:10:13The head's gotta be in the right place

0:10:13 > 0:10:17and the grapples have gotta close. Isn't it a lot of things to do?

0:10:17 > 0:10:20- Yes. We'll see how good you are. - Yeah.

0:10:20 > 0:10:22Considering this might just be

0:10:22 > 0:10:25the most dangerous thing I've operated to date.

0:10:25 > 0:10:27We're keeping my first test on it nice and simple.

0:10:27 > 0:10:30I've got to use it to cut down five trees

0:10:30 > 0:10:33without killing myself or anybody else.

0:10:33 > 0:10:38And do you know, I reckon there's a 50-50 chance I might just do that.

0:10:38 > 0:10:39Maybe.

0:10:39 > 0:10:41- There's no steering wheel.- No.

0:10:41 > 0:10:45It's all a joy stick. OK. Another day, another harvest.

0:10:45 > 0:10:50Each control is different. Forward, backwards, side to side.

0:10:50 > 0:10:53So, I'll let you try to see if you figured it out.

0:10:53 > 0:10:56This is your main, obviously, outside, open outside.

0:10:56 > 0:10:59- Yeah.- Inside, close inside.

0:10:59 > 0:11:01Same with... And this is your bottom,

0:11:01 > 0:11:03those are your accumulator arms.

0:11:03 > 0:11:05- The other top four buttons, never touch.- Right.

0:11:05 > 0:11:07And you'll figure it out when you start walking.

0:11:07 > 0:11:10Just walk and level yourself out and you'll figure it out.

0:11:10 > 0:11:13- How do I walk? - Pedals at the bottom.

0:11:13 > 0:11:16Oh, my head's taking in a lot of facts here.

0:11:16 > 0:11:18We're gonna have you, kind of, work your way through.

0:11:18 > 0:11:22Starting here, work your way back to this last tree right behind us.

0:11:22 > 0:11:24And I want these trees in a pile.

0:11:24 > 0:11:27- Yeah.- You got it?- No.- No?

0:11:27 > 0:11:30- This is a massive forest eater. You can't...- OK. You're good to go.

0:11:30 > 0:11:32- I'm not.- I'm gonna have a radio right here.

0:11:32 > 0:11:34I'll have a handheld radio.

0:11:34 > 0:11:37What, you're not gonna be in here with me?

0:11:37 > 0:11:40- No, I don't want to be in here with you.- Right, good, OK.

0:11:40 > 0:11:43- Go for it.- Eh, we'll see. - We'll see you later.

0:11:43 > 0:11:45- OK.- Good luck. - That was my training.

0:11:45 > 0:11:48He just basically told me what did what,

0:11:48 > 0:11:49and I've forgotten what does what.

0:11:49 > 0:11:52And now he's left me in it.

0:11:54 > 0:11:57So, I guess I'll give it a go.

0:11:59 > 0:12:01Oh, I've forgotten everything, every single thing.

0:12:01 > 0:12:03All right Richard, when I get out

0:12:03 > 0:12:05to a safe distance here, we'll be ready to go.

0:12:05 > 0:12:10I can't say a safe distance would be, ooh, out of the woods somewhere.

0:12:10 > 0:12:12Get back all the way, son.

0:12:12 > 0:12:16Pretty much, directly to your left, it looks like there's a tree,

0:12:16 > 0:12:18you can cut that one.

0:12:18 > 0:12:21Oh, that feels weird.

0:12:21 > 0:12:24Oh, that feels like I can only just get to it.

0:12:24 > 0:12:27So, I'm now, I've turned to what I think is the right angle.

0:12:27 > 0:12:29I got the grapplers open. I'm gonna cut low,

0:12:29 > 0:12:32that's the main thing. OK. This is it.

0:12:32 > 0:12:35Let's see if I can cut down five trees.

0:12:35 > 0:12:37Here we go.

0:12:42 > 0:12:45- Oh.- Yeah. You've officially lost that one.

0:12:45 > 0:12:47I never touched it.

0:12:47 > 0:12:50That one just fell over, it just, and that, that wasn't me.

0:12:50 > 0:12:52It fell. It must be another guy, or something.

0:12:52 > 0:12:56This is the most complicated, mind-bending thing I've ever done.

0:12:57 > 0:13:01'OK, a little bit faster, little bit faster. Push through.'

0:13:02 > 0:13:07- Whoa. Whoa.- 'Just make sure you...' - There we go.- 'There you go.'

0:13:07 > 0:13:09I'm gonna give it a big hug.

0:13:09 > 0:13:11- 'You got it.' - Oh, I've chopped down a tree.

0:13:11 > 0:13:13I have chopped down a tree. Oh.

0:13:13 > 0:13:17This is nerve-racking, I can't describe the feeling of...

0:13:17 > 0:13:19That's a whole tree above me there.

0:13:22 > 0:13:24I can't believe he did it.

0:13:24 > 0:13:27I just cut down a tree. That's amazing.

0:13:28 > 0:13:31This thing is mighty.

0:13:31 > 0:13:34OK. Try another one. OK. Grab it, grab it.

0:13:34 > 0:13:36- Perfect.- Perfect.

0:13:36 > 0:13:39And you can spin it around and place it in the same pile.

0:13:39 > 0:13:42I'm concentrating to an unbelievable degree.

0:13:42 > 0:13:44I'm now moving a tree around.

0:13:52 > 0:13:56'I can see you from here. Keep going, keep going.

0:13:56 > 0:13:58'I'll tell you when to start going. Close your arms.'

0:14:00 > 0:14:04'Keep closing, just the top off. There you go.

0:14:04 > 0:14:08'Now, hold them tight and try to place that tree

0:14:08 > 0:14:11'as close as you can to the last one you cut down.'

0:14:19 > 0:14:21- This is a big one, isn't it? - Yeah.

0:14:21 > 0:14:23It is. Just take your time.

0:14:23 > 0:14:26'Get the head as close as you can to the tree.'

0:14:32 > 0:14:36Give it a really big hug, this one, Richard, cos it's a big one.

0:14:36 > 0:14:38'There you go, you have it.'

0:14:41 > 0:14:45Perfect, you can start tipping your head forward.

0:14:46 > 0:14:48'You can let it go right now, perfect.'

0:14:52 > 0:14:55All right. You can spin around and start walking out.

0:14:57 > 0:15:00My brain is absolutely hurting.

0:15:00 > 0:15:03This is one of those unique things.

0:15:03 > 0:15:07For a while, you have it. And then you have nothing.

0:15:08 > 0:15:12Thank you. Here's the surprise. Lunch is meat.

0:15:13 > 0:15:15This is some good wood you're making.

0:15:15 > 0:15:17This is really strong.

0:15:17 > 0:15:19This is a combined eight tons of lumberjack.

0:15:21 > 0:15:25- This looks really tough. - Oh. Oh, no.

0:15:25 > 0:15:28Yeah, you see that, lads. I snapped my fork, yeah, pretty manly.

0:15:28 > 0:15:30That's, yeah, I fit right in, you know.

0:15:30 > 0:15:32I just broke that myself, with my hands.

0:15:32 > 0:15:35I didn't use a machine, I just did it really.

0:15:35 > 0:15:37I know, I wasn't even trying.

0:15:39 > 0:15:42Now, just as important as harvesting a crop is planting the next one.

0:15:42 > 0:15:44That's what Kirk's brought me here for.

0:15:44 > 0:15:46So, we're gonna be planting trees.

0:15:46 > 0:15:49Exactly. And sometimes, these guys will actually plant

0:15:49 > 0:15:50about a thousand trees a day.

0:15:50 > 0:15:53- Thousand?- Yeah.- Brilliant. So, where is it? The machine?

0:15:53 > 0:15:56- Right here.- The big one that is as big as a...

0:15:56 > 0:15:59- That's a shovel. - It's a hand shovel

0:15:59 > 0:16:01- That's the machine? - It's YOUR machine.

0:16:01 > 0:16:04You've got an enormous machine I know I've used it,

0:16:04 > 0:16:05that can just snip off a tree.

0:16:05 > 0:16:0775-foot tall fully grown Douglas-fir.

0:16:07 > 0:16:08Pop it on a pile of others,

0:16:08 > 0:16:11like putting a knife back in the cutlery drawer.

0:16:11 > 0:16:13You're telling me this is what you use?

0:16:13 > 0:16:16- This is your machine right now. Now, I planted this one.- Yeah.

0:16:16 > 0:16:18You're gonna plant 24 more.

0:16:18 > 0:16:20I'm gonna go sit down and have a glass of water.

0:16:20 > 0:16:21Yeah.

0:16:22 > 0:16:28Well, all I'll say is I'm gonna call this one -

0:16:28 > 0:16:29Daniel,

0:16:29 > 0:16:31Daisy.

0:16:31 > 0:16:33Barry and Tim. I'm gonna separate them.

0:16:33 > 0:16:35- They don't get on.- Perfect.

0:16:35 > 0:16:40This is great. I'm building my own forest. Look. Come on.

0:16:40 > 0:16:46In 40, 50 years, I'll be dead but, you know.

0:16:47 > 0:16:51It's day two for me here in the steep wooded hills of Oregon.

0:16:51 > 0:16:55I'm spending time with Cross & Crown Logging Company.

0:16:55 > 0:16:57I've tasked myself with learning to use the heavy-duty

0:16:57 > 0:17:02specialised machinery they use to harvest trees as modern lumberjacks.

0:17:02 > 0:17:05Yesterday, they taught me how to use the mighty feller-buncher,

0:17:05 > 0:17:10that can saw off and harvest a fully grown Douglas-fir in seconds.

0:17:10 > 0:17:13Today, I'm gonna be trained on processing that tree

0:17:13 > 0:17:16for the sawmill using the dangle head processor.

0:17:22 > 0:17:24So, Greg, look. I mean, this bit I get.

0:17:24 > 0:17:25This is just a tracker.

0:17:25 > 0:17:28So your track, cab, and then the boom.

0:17:28 > 0:17:30It's just all this at the end of it, I'm guessing, this...

0:17:30 > 0:17:33- This is the business. - Well, it's called the dangle head.

0:17:33 > 0:17:37So, this is the dangle head that I've heard mention of.

0:17:37 > 0:17:40Right now, all I know is I wouldn't like to be asleep

0:17:40 > 0:17:42in a motel and this crashed through the wall,

0:17:42 > 0:17:44it looks like something out of a horror movie.

0:17:44 > 0:17:46- What does it do?- Um, takes the trees

0:17:46 > 0:17:50and bucks them into logs in normal lengths for the mill.

0:17:50 > 0:17:53- This turns it from just being a tree into your product.- Exactly.

0:17:53 > 0:17:55Cause the mill doesn't just ring you up

0:17:55 > 0:17:57- and say, "hello, can we have some trees please?"- No.

0:17:57 > 0:18:00They order logs. How does it do it?

0:18:00 > 0:18:02First, you have to grab the log.

0:18:02 > 0:18:05These knives here usually you grab it with.

0:18:05 > 0:18:07Next, it'll set these drive wheels around it.

0:18:07 > 0:18:10These are sort of serrated. OK.

0:18:10 > 0:18:11Yeah. They call them thumbs.

0:18:11 > 0:18:13What these do is they'll grip the log

0:18:13 > 0:18:16and they'll feed the log through the head.

0:18:16 > 0:18:18Up here, this looks a chain saw. Is it?

0:18:18 > 0:18:20Yes. That's your topping saw. Two saws.

0:18:20 > 0:18:22Right.

0:18:22 > 0:18:24This is called your butt saw.

0:18:24 > 0:18:26You use that to flush up the ends of the logs.

0:18:26 > 0:18:28Then you switch over to your topping saw.

0:18:28 > 0:18:30You use that topping saw to cut the rest of it off.

0:18:30 > 0:18:33This, I presume, is also hideously dangerous.

0:18:33 > 0:18:39- Oh, yes.- And there's a million... I could hurt myself on this static, just standing next to it.

0:18:39 > 0:18:42Right. Well, make it work.

0:18:42 > 0:18:43I wanna see it do its thing.

0:18:44 > 0:18:46Light it up.

0:18:46 > 0:18:48So this is the dangle head processor at work.

0:18:48 > 0:18:50What's it actually doing?

0:18:50 > 0:18:53It's actually making trees into logs.

0:18:53 > 0:18:55These logs are what we take to the mill.

0:18:55 > 0:18:58And that's what our contract requires us to do.

0:18:58 > 0:19:03It makes them in certain lengths so they can be put into 2x4s,

0:19:03 > 0:19:062x6s, 2x10s, whatever the public needs for building homes.

0:19:06 > 0:19:08How was this done before this machine?

0:19:08 > 0:19:11This machine was a lot of handwork.

0:19:11 > 0:19:14A lot of power saws, hand saws in the past.

0:19:14 > 0:19:18And it was very slow and tedious, and very hard work.

0:19:18 > 0:19:19And how long would it take?

0:19:19 > 0:19:23It would take about ten to 15 minutes per tree to do that by hand.

0:19:23 > 0:19:26- And it just comes down to nothing. - Yes.

0:19:26 > 0:19:28- In seconds. It's too easy. - Seconds. It's done.

0:19:28 > 0:19:30All the guys running these machines, they all

0:19:30 > 0:19:32- are critical to the operation. - Yes.

0:19:32 > 0:19:34- That's a lot of responsibility. - A lot.

0:19:34 > 0:19:36That machine right there,

0:19:36 > 0:19:40that's our main machine in our cog of operation.

0:19:40 > 0:19:43Is it hard to run this machine?

0:19:43 > 0:19:46- Oh, piece of cake. You think you can do it?- No.

0:19:50 > 0:19:53Greg, there's a lot of buttons and stuff.

0:19:53 > 0:19:57Number one thing, I'll go through the main functions.

0:19:57 > 0:20:00- OK.- This is the butterfly switch, that opens and closes your grab arms, your knives.

0:20:00 > 0:20:03This is your butt saw, this is your topping saw,

0:20:03 > 0:20:07your throttle's up here to your left, directly above you,

0:20:07 > 0:20:09- high load throttle. - Oh, more buttons.

0:20:09 > 0:20:12- We've gone over the basics and plus a little bit more.- Yeah.

0:20:12 > 0:20:14You know the functions. Now, that one...

0:20:14 > 0:20:17- Well, maybe you don't know 'em, but you've heard them.- OK.

0:20:17 > 0:20:21What we wanna do is start by throttling up.

0:20:21 > 0:20:23And now let's lift up the boom and swing her around.

0:20:23 > 0:20:25Right. So, lifting boom.

0:20:25 > 0:20:28Is this as easy as you thought it would be?

0:20:28 > 0:20:31No, it's so much harder than anything else I've ever tried.

0:20:31 > 0:20:35- If I get it wrong, can it be bad with this machine?- Yeah.

0:20:35 > 0:20:38Because if you ended up turn that head in the wrong direction

0:20:38 > 0:20:40at the wrong time as you're feeding,

0:20:40 > 0:20:41you can shove this right,

0:20:41 > 0:20:43you can shove a log right through your window.

0:20:43 > 0:20:45- Shoot yourself in the face with a tree?- Basically, yeah.

0:20:45 > 0:20:47Like Russian roulette.

0:20:47 > 0:20:49See if it will make it through between the bars.

0:20:49 > 0:20:51It's the most complicated thing I've ever encountered,

0:20:51 > 0:20:54- and also incredibly dangerous. - Yes.- OK.

0:20:54 > 0:20:58OK. Now, let's swing over, boom down and I'll...

0:20:58 > 0:21:02- What am I trying to achieve? - Any log you wanna try to go for. - These down here?- Yeah.

0:21:03 > 0:21:06- Right.- Now, what's you're gonna do is, when you're getting close,

0:21:06 > 0:21:08- go ahead and close your drive arms. - That's where?

0:21:08 > 0:21:11- Your drive arms are right here. - That's...- Close 'em.

0:21:11 > 0:21:14- I'm not going to...- Close 'em. - Drive arms, are the top ones?

0:21:14 > 0:21:16- Top one.- Yeah, OK.

0:21:16 > 0:21:19Tip the head down with the harvester down and grab,

0:21:19 > 0:21:21close at the same time.

0:21:21 > 0:21:24And then open up your drive arm as you're sucking it in

0:21:24 > 0:21:29and then close them again, if that's not too complicated.

0:21:29 > 0:21:32Well, I hate to say it, Greg, but it really is!

0:21:32 > 0:21:35Oh, dear God. Right.

0:21:35 > 0:21:37So, I need to tip the... Oh!

0:21:37 > 0:21:40Tip, grab, lift.

0:21:40 > 0:21:42- Tip, grab, lift.- Yeah.

0:21:42 > 0:21:45Tip, grab, lift. No, I haven't got it again.

0:21:45 > 0:21:48Grab... Oh, oh, God.

0:21:48 > 0:21:51Yeah. You wanna tip down at the same time.

0:21:52 > 0:21:55- There you go. Now, close your drive arms.- And that's here.

0:21:55 > 0:21:58There. Close. OK.

0:21:58 > 0:22:01Now, swing over to your left, to your left, your idea is,

0:22:01 > 0:22:04you wanna go over to this direction, by this other log over here,

0:22:04 > 0:22:05so you can see the saw cut.

0:22:05 > 0:22:08That's why I was setting it up for you,

0:22:08 > 0:22:10to be able to see what you're doing, over there.

0:22:12 > 0:22:13Now, here's the complicated thing.

0:22:15 > 0:22:18Oh, what, we haven't got to it until now?

0:22:18 > 0:22:20No, because it's the nudge thing.

0:22:20 > 0:22:24You press "in" on this one and "out" on that one at the same time.

0:22:24 > 0:22:29What? How do I? What? Oh.

0:22:30 > 0:22:34Back it off, and then try that, in on both of them.

0:22:34 > 0:22:37Whoa. That really took off.

0:22:37 > 0:22:41Yeah. Uh. Right...

0:22:42 > 0:22:45So, any questions so far?

0:22:45 > 0:22:48Yeah, how does it work?

0:22:48 > 0:22:50Oh...

0:22:50 > 0:22:54- After you.- OK. - Man, that was... Is it me?

0:22:54 > 0:22:57Am I stupid, I mean, I can fly a helicopter,

0:22:57 > 0:22:59I've operated a hovercraft,

0:22:59 > 0:23:02all manner of things, but that is just another world in there.

0:23:02 > 0:23:04I'm completely baffled,

0:23:04 > 0:23:06I don't think I've ever felt so beaten by something.

0:23:06 > 0:23:10It's got so many functions. That is a kind of massive,

0:23:10 > 0:23:13quite deadly logger's Swiss Army pen knife.

0:23:13 > 0:23:15- Mm-hmm.- And every button you press, something else springs out

0:23:15 > 0:23:17and goes, "Bing, Er", and the saw starts.

0:23:17 > 0:23:19And it all jams up,

0:23:19 > 0:23:21and then you gotta press 16 more buttons to get it released.

0:23:21 > 0:23:24It's really timing, and that's the hard part. It takes years.

0:23:24 > 0:23:26I'll tell you what.

0:23:26 > 0:23:30Watching you operate it earlier on properly has given me an idea.

0:23:30 > 0:23:32And it's quite a good one.

0:23:32 > 0:23:34- You'll like it, you'll be pleased. - Let's find out.

0:23:34 > 0:23:36Think of it as my gift to you.

0:23:39 > 0:23:42I watched these guys working out here for a bit now.

0:23:42 > 0:23:46And whilst, at first glance, it's all big-scale, roughty,

0:23:46 > 0:23:47outdoorsy stuff.

0:23:47 > 0:23:51It's also about precision and accuracy.

0:23:51 > 0:23:54The logs that they're working at out here are big and heavy,

0:23:54 > 0:23:57they could kill you if you get it wrong.

0:23:57 > 0:23:59But watching them position them, sometimes throwing them,

0:23:59 > 0:24:02exactly where they want them to be, got me thinking.

0:24:02 > 0:24:04That's exactly like...

0:24:05 > 0:24:07..darts.

0:24:07 > 0:24:10You can see where this is going, this is really coming together.

0:24:10 > 0:24:12So, we have our darts, we are about ready to do this

0:24:12 > 0:24:15apart from one critical piece of kit, we need a target.

0:24:15 > 0:24:19Now, we've scaled the whole game up, so it is gonna have to be big,

0:24:19 > 0:24:23I would say, something roughly minivan-sized?

0:24:25 > 0:24:29Yeah. And I simply cannot think of a better use for a minivan

0:24:29 > 0:24:33than as a target for 5,000 pound log darts.

0:24:36 > 0:24:38'All right, Greg. Let's go.'

0:24:38 > 0:24:41This is about as exciting a thing as I've ever been involved in.

0:24:41 > 0:24:44- How are you feeling?- I love it. - Come on.- I love it.

0:24:44 > 0:24:46You must've thought of trying this?

0:24:46 > 0:24:49Thought about it, never thought that I'd ever see the day.

0:24:49 > 0:24:52All right. I'll let you concentrate on your first dart.

0:24:52 > 0:24:55'All right, Greg. Let's see what you got.

0:24:55 > 0:24:57'Oh, Greg, follow the...'

0:25:01 > 0:25:03Oh, no!

0:25:03 > 0:25:05- Oh, no.- Boo.

0:25:05 > 0:25:08- Look at...- 2.1 from the crew, Greg.

0:25:08 > 0:25:10They're not going to go easy on you, fella.

0:25:10 > 0:25:11Oh, I know they're not.

0:25:11 > 0:25:142.1. 2.1.

0:25:14 > 0:25:18Bear with us. This is the birth of a new sport, it takes time to perfect it.

0:25:19 > 0:25:21Come on, I feel like your trainer. I'm your manager and trainer.

0:25:21 > 0:25:23Come on, Greg, we can do this.

0:25:27 > 0:25:30- Oh!- Whoa!

0:25:30 > 0:25:327.2.

0:25:32 > 0:25:35I'd like to stress we're not just messing about here.

0:25:35 > 0:25:39This is a scientific and journalistic demonstration of what these guys actually do.

0:25:39 > 0:25:42Let's see if you can get a little bit more arch with it this time.

0:25:42 > 0:25:44Let's get one in there.

0:25:47 > 0:25:49Oh ho!

0:25:49 > 0:25:52Oh! Yeah. Nice hit. Yeah, yeah.

0:25:52 > 0:25:54OK. Here we go, come on, come on, come on.

0:25:54 > 0:25:56Let's focus. This is the second round.

0:25:56 > 0:25:58All right, Greg. Let's see what you can do.

0:25:59 > 0:26:01One, two, three.

0:26:03 > 0:26:05Oh! Dead hit!

0:26:05 > 0:26:06Oh, nice, Greg.

0:26:06 > 0:26:08Yeah. 7.2.

0:26:08 > 0:26:107.2 Greg. Good job.

0:26:10 > 0:26:12Here we go again.

0:26:21 > 0:26:23- 8.9, 8.9.- 8.9.

0:26:23 > 0:26:28The crowd's gone crazy, the crowd's gone crazy.

0:26:33 > 0:26:34It's a new sport for loggers.

0:26:34 > 0:26:36Low swing. Whoa!

0:26:39 > 0:26:42Ten. Ten!

0:26:42 > 0:26:46Whoo! Bull's-eye!

0:26:46 > 0:26:48That was a bull's eye.

0:26:48 > 0:26:49Whoo!

0:26:49 > 0:26:53Greg, as an idea, why don't we just try another sport?

0:26:53 > 0:26:55We've done dart, why don't we try jousting?

0:26:55 > 0:26:58- Jousting?- Yeah. We're just going to try another sport.

0:26:59 > 0:27:01Whoa!

0:27:01 > 0:27:03Through the top. Oh!

0:27:03 > 0:27:05Now, the crowd goes wild!

0:27:05 > 0:27:07CHEERING

0:27:07 > 0:27:08What a showman.

0:27:08 > 0:27:11Right through. Oh, oh!

0:27:11 > 0:27:14Right through the seat.

0:27:14 > 0:27:15Oh!

0:27:15 > 0:27:17Whoo-hoo!

0:27:17 > 0:27:18It's a ten.

0:27:18 > 0:27:20It's a ten, Greg. Another ten.

0:27:20 > 0:27:21Yeah.

0:27:21 > 0:27:23That was kind of an historic moment really,

0:27:23 > 0:27:25the launch of a whole new form of sport.

0:27:25 > 0:27:28- The birth. I can't believe it. - Completely destroyed.

0:27:28 > 0:27:31One good day in the workshop, pluck these out, you could have that up and running.

0:27:31 > 0:27:33- Yeah. I think so.- Whoo!

0:27:33 > 0:27:36Guys, I want to thank you all, and especially Greg,

0:27:36 > 0:27:38as world champion of a new sport.

0:27:38 > 0:27:43A truly inspirational demonstration of the finesse and precision with which you guys work.

0:27:43 > 0:27:44I mean, look, if that doesn't say

0:27:44 > 0:27:46precision, finesse

0:27:46 > 0:27:50and I hope you don't mind me using a soft word out here, elegance.

0:27:50 > 0:27:52- I think it does.- Yeah.

0:27:52 > 0:27:53- I think it says that.- Yeah.

0:27:53 > 0:27:56- Right, back to work. - Yeah, there we go.

0:27:56 > 0:27:59It's the beginning of my third day with the Cross and Crown Logging Company

0:27:59 > 0:28:02where I've tasked myself with learning to operate

0:28:02 > 0:28:07the high-tech, heavy duty machinery they use as modern lumberjacks.

0:28:07 > 0:28:10So far, I have mastered the mighty feller-buncher.

0:28:10 > 0:28:12I have chopped down a tree.

0:28:12 > 0:28:16And proved myself just a natural-born operator

0:28:16 > 0:28:18of the fiendishly complicated dangle head processor.

0:28:18 > 0:28:21Whoa, that really took off.

0:28:21 > 0:28:22Any questions so far?

0:28:22 > 0:28:24Yeah. How does it work?

0:28:24 > 0:28:26Yeah, all right, I did struggle with that one a bit.

0:28:26 > 0:28:28Today, though, I'm going to learn how to use

0:28:28 > 0:28:32the loader and hopefully carve out some time for some extra lessons,

0:28:32 > 0:28:34cramming, if you will,

0:28:34 > 0:28:36in that processor before my final exam

0:28:36 > 0:28:37which is coming up...

0:28:37 > 0:28:39far too soon.

0:28:42 > 0:28:44Now, finally, something I understand. This is the loader.

0:28:44 > 0:28:46A log loader.

0:28:46 > 0:28:47And I can work at what's that for.

0:28:47 > 0:28:49I mean, the dangle head, whatever.

0:28:49 > 0:28:52You've done everything. What this does,

0:28:52 > 0:28:54this is a grapple.

0:28:54 > 0:28:55- Yeah.- OK.

0:28:55 > 0:28:57What that does is it comes around the log

0:28:57 > 0:28:59and lifts it up, puts it into a...

0:28:59 > 0:29:00You have a bed.

0:29:00 > 0:29:04..grip and then you use this rack here, about 10, 15 feet out

0:29:04 > 0:29:07and you pick that up.

0:29:07 > 0:29:10Now, what we're doing is we've got logs here that you'll sort out by length.

0:29:10 > 0:29:14And you'll sort out by grade,

0:29:14 > 0:29:16so we're going to see how you can do that.

0:29:16 > 0:29:18OK. Let's mount up.

0:29:18 > 0:29:19All right.

0:29:19 > 0:29:20What's what?

0:29:20 > 0:29:24OK. You're going to have to move the seat ahead a little bit.

0:29:24 > 0:29:26- OK.- Short legs. There you go.

0:29:26 > 0:29:27Yeah.

0:29:27 > 0:29:30These are your buttons for your controls.

0:29:30 > 0:29:31Sideways.

0:29:31 > 0:29:34Up, down on your stick

0:29:34 > 0:29:36- and this is your main boom.- Yeah.

0:29:36 > 0:29:38- This is your triggers for your grapples.- Right.

0:29:38 > 0:29:41- Throttle up?- Yeah. There you go. OK. Throw this ahead.

0:29:41 > 0:29:44- Wherever you want it.- Are you going to stay there while I'm...?

0:29:44 > 0:29:47I'll stay here for just a little to see if you pick it up.

0:29:47 > 0:29:49- There it goes. Picking itself up. - There you go.

0:29:49 > 0:29:51- Squeeze the trigger shut with your grapple.- Right. OK.

0:29:51 > 0:29:53- That arranges it like that.- Yeah.

0:29:53 > 0:29:55- That closes it. That opens it. - There you go.

0:29:55 > 0:29:57Therefore, if I try just getting all this, I mean.

0:29:57 > 0:29:59You want the short logs right there.

0:29:59 > 0:30:00Just drop your stick boom down.

0:30:00 > 0:30:02- Pull it up.- Oh. Oh my God.

0:30:02 > 0:30:04- So you let down on the...see? - Yeah.

0:30:04 > 0:30:06OK. Right there. Lift it up.

0:30:06 > 0:30:08- There you got it.- Right.

0:30:08 > 0:30:10Lift it up away from you. You know, right.

0:30:10 > 0:30:13- Yes. So I'll it take it out with that.- Now, swing right.

0:30:13 > 0:30:15So, swing right.

0:30:15 > 0:30:18Drop your heel right down. All of them. OK?

0:30:18 > 0:30:20See? Up your main boom. There you go.

0:30:20 > 0:30:23OK. Now you start dropping.

0:30:23 > 0:30:25OK. Just drop your main boom down.

0:30:25 > 0:30:28Use your main boom. That's quickest.

0:30:28 > 0:30:30Up little more.

0:30:30 > 0:30:32Swing to your left. See?

0:30:38 > 0:30:39OK. There you go.

0:30:39 > 0:30:41Perfect. You're on your own.

0:30:41 > 0:30:42I'll try some more of that.

0:30:42 > 0:30:44- Good luck.- I'm enjoying that. That's a good game.- Yeah.

0:30:48 > 0:30:49Go to your right. There you go.

0:30:49 > 0:30:51Now, put your heel rack down.

0:30:55 > 0:30:56RADIO: 'There you go.

0:30:56 > 0:30:58- 'Lift your main boom.- Good job.

0:30:58 > 0:30:59'Hey. That's the way.'

0:30:59 > 0:31:01I told you I can get him to do this in about 10 minutes, didn't I?

0:31:01 > 0:31:03It's been half an hour.

0:31:03 > 0:31:05Oh, no, no, no. I don't know what time you're on.

0:31:05 > 0:31:09The time on American time, it's been only about ten minutes.

0:31:09 > 0:31:12I'm loving this. Nearly finished. There's just one more thing I want to do.

0:31:12 > 0:31:14'I've always wanted to do this.'

0:31:14 > 0:31:15'What are you doing?'

0:31:15 > 0:31:16Oh, what is that over there?

0:31:16 > 0:31:18I don't know. I can't tell.

0:31:27 > 0:31:29Oh!

0:31:29 > 0:31:32I guess you got your dollar in, you're ready to try it again.

0:31:36 > 0:31:37- Oh.- He's got it.

0:31:37 > 0:31:40- He's got it!- He's got it.

0:31:40 > 0:31:41- Ha-ha!- He's got it.

0:31:41 > 0:31:42He's got the limb, too.

0:31:47 > 0:31:49It's snowing. It's snowing.

0:31:53 > 0:31:56'We won! We won!'

0:31:56 > 0:31:58I won.

0:31:58 > 0:31:59Look at the precision.

0:32:00 > 0:32:02'That is really good precision.'

0:32:09 > 0:32:10'Yahoo!'

0:32:10 > 0:32:12Great job.

0:32:12 > 0:32:14That is the best game I think I've ever played.

0:32:14 > 0:32:17It's just tremendous.

0:32:18 > 0:32:21Oh, where's the prize?

0:32:21 > 0:32:23- Here it is.- Well, here it is.

0:32:23 > 0:32:24That's the best game.

0:32:24 > 0:32:26- I mean, that's as good as it gets. - Yeah, that was fun.

0:32:26 > 0:32:28Yeah? I told you. 15 minutes.

0:32:28 > 0:32:30That's a good game. I like that.

0:32:36 > 0:32:37So what do we do now?

0:32:37 > 0:32:40We're going to have you come down and try to build a lean-to

0:32:40 > 0:32:45to see if you are capable of loading one of our 200,000 log trims.

0:32:45 > 0:32:46So how do I do it?

0:32:46 > 0:32:49You're going to sit in that shuttle, and you're going to take these logs

0:32:49 > 0:32:52and you're going to stack them against both sides of this.

0:32:52 > 0:32:55Oh, so I line them up on the A frame like that?

0:32:55 > 0:32:58Yeah. I want to see everything smoothly done.

0:32:58 > 0:33:02Line it up, so it's perfect. Remember your training. You're one with the machine.

0:33:02 > 0:33:05- I can do that. - You'll be sleeping in it tonight, make sure you do the job.

0:33:05 > 0:33:08- I can do it. No, I can do this. I can do this.- All right.

0:33:08 > 0:33:09It's about finesse, I've got this.

0:33:09 > 0:33:13Honestly, trust me, I've got this machine. I'm confident.

0:33:15 > 0:33:16It's running, good.

0:33:16 > 0:33:18- OK. Right.- It's running up to half.

0:33:18 > 0:33:20I've got complete confidence in this man.

0:33:20 > 0:33:21Uh, let's pick a log.

0:33:23 > 0:33:25OK. I have a log.

0:33:29 > 0:33:32OK, right. This is how I rotate it.

0:33:32 > 0:33:34Now, I'm going to reach forwards a bit.

0:33:34 > 0:33:36Get it over the top.

0:33:36 > 0:33:39If it stops swinging. Argh.

0:33:39 > 0:33:42I don't know how we won the war with him.

0:33:42 > 0:33:44And now I begin to lower it.

0:33:48 > 0:33:50Here we go.

0:33:50 > 0:33:51I'm doing three things together now.

0:33:51 > 0:33:54I'm rotating slightly whilst lowering it

0:33:54 > 0:33:56and making sure it's straight.

0:33:59 > 0:34:02Making sure it's straight out that way.

0:34:02 > 0:34:07Just get that palm out forwards, so it's in the right place.

0:34:07 > 0:34:09I think that's going to cap. Yeah.

0:34:09 > 0:34:11That's worked!

0:34:11 > 0:34:15Does everything you do take you ten times longer than everybody else?

0:34:15 > 0:34:17I'm new.

0:34:17 > 0:34:19Let's try one from over here now.

0:34:19 > 0:34:22That is the world's biggest game of pick-up sticks going on here.

0:34:25 > 0:34:26That's good.

0:34:26 > 0:34:29Oh, ho, ho. All right!

0:34:29 > 0:34:30Look at that.

0:34:30 > 0:34:31Soft and gentle.

0:34:31 > 0:34:34There are things in this show that I sometimes, on occasion,

0:34:34 > 0:34:36believe it or not, can't do. This, I've got.

0:34:36 > 0:34:38OK. You got the dexterity down.

0:34:38 > 0:34:40Let's start worrying about my prosperity.

0:34:40 > 0:34:42One at a time isn't going to cut it.

0:34:42 > 0:34:44We got to put about a dozen on it a shot.

0:34:44 > 0:34:47- Let's get this done. Come on. - OK. I'm going to pick it up.

0:34:47 > 0:34:49Here we go.

0:34:49 > 0:34:52A little higher, a little farther up. There you go.

0:34:52 > 0:34:53Drop.

0:34:54 > 0:34:57See how easy that is. That's what I'm talking about.

0:34:57 > 0:34:59Do the other side, too.

0:34:59 > 0:35:00Get those suckers up there.

0:35:00 > 0:35:03I'm getting quick at this now. Going for speed. I'm going for speed now.

0:35:03 > 0:35:05I've got to do this quickly

0:35:05 > 0:35:08so let's just get this done as you sling them on.

0:35:09 > 0:35:11Oh.

0:35:11 > 0:35:12Oh, ho, ho.

0:35:13 > 0:35:14Yeah.

0:35:14 > 0:35:16'Oh. We can't sleep in that, Richard.'

0:35:16 > 0:35:19'Yeah. I was trying the whole speed thing.'

0:35:19 > 0:35:22It's when you... I've got it, slowly,

0:35:22 > 0:35:24but when you're fast, it's a lot harder.

0:35:30 > 0:35:33The final exam is getting closer by the second.

0:35:33 > 0:35:35And, well, I've got a big worry.

0:35:35 > 0:35:37And it's behind me right now.

0:35:37 > 0:35:38The dangle head processor.

0:35:38 > 0:35:41It's kind of become my nemesis. I made such a mess of it.

0:35:41 > 0:35:43And, uh, I've got to get a hold of it.

0:35:43 > 0:35:44I've got to get that thing right.

0:35:44 > 0:35:49So, I've arranged some extra practice. And I am scared.

0:35:49 > 0:35:50- Kirk?- Yes?

0:35:50 > 0:35:53Can I be honest? I don't like this machine.

0:35:53 > 0:35:54Get me through the basics.

0:35:54 > 0:35:56Let's just do the basics.

0:35:56 > 0:35:58All right, go ahead. Just like a log loader.

0:35:58 > 0:36:02- So I can lift the boom.- Exactly. You can just do a little more, see?

0:36:02 > 0:36:04- OK.- All right. Let's swing over to try one.

0:36:04 > 0:36:07So, swinging over. Being careful not to hit anything whilst I do that.

0:36:07 > 0:36:09Pick the easiest log you can.

0:36:09 > 0:36:12That's one of the key things.

0:36:12 > 0:36:13- Yeah. Probably. - Pick a log that you can get.

0:36:13 > 0:36:16Let's pull that little tiny one. Oh, hello.

0:36:16 > 0:36:20Just give it a little squeeze. Ah, right there.

0:36:20 > 0:36:25- Oh, look at that.- Now I can lift. - Yep, yep. Perfect.- That's it. - All right. Swing it out this way.

0:36:25 > 0:36:29And you're going to reverse speed with this little button right here as you're swinging.

0:36:29 > 0:36:31- So, now reversing. - So, we're swinging.

0:36:31 > 0:36:33Now, I don't want to reverse into me.

0:36:33 > 0:36:35- That's away from us. Right, OK. - Yep, yep, yep.

0:36:35 > 0:36:37And then cut in?

0:36:37 > 0:36:38Right, use your saw cut.

0:36:38 > 0:36:39Saw cut and it goes grrrr.

0:36:39 > 0:36:41Perfect. OK,

0:36:41 > 0:36:44- and I'm going to show a little trick.- Yeah?- Swing it on over here.

0:36:44 > 0:36:45- Right.- Click that one button.

0:36:45 > 0:36:47Ooh.

0:36:47 > 0:36:48Put down a little bit.

0:36:48 > 0:36:50Whoa.

0:36:50 > 0:36:53OK. Now bring it back. Look at that.

0:36:53 > 0:36:55There you go.

0:36:55 > 0:36:57Yeah, there you go. So what do you think?

0:36:57 > 0:37:00Yes, I've got a better understanding, yes.

0:37:00 > 0:37:02Throttle down. Switch that off.

0:37:02 > 0:37:05Oh, man, that is still going to be my weak point.

0:37:05 > 0:37:08More than weak. That's really hard.

0:37:11 > 0:37:14Oh, this is it. My final exam. Here's what I've got to do.

0:37:14 > 0:37:16Five trees have been marked like this.

0:37:16 > 0:37:18I have to use the feller-buncher to cut them down

0:37:18 > 0:37:21and then place them carefully on the ground.

0:37:21 > 0:37:25Then process them into logs using the dangle head processor.

0:37:25 > 0:37:27Yeah, I know, that's the tricky bit.

0:37:27 > 0:37:29I then have to pick them up with a loader and load them into a truck.

0:37:29 > 0:37:34If I get it right in 15 minutes, that's all I got,

0:37:34 > 0:37:37then, and only then, can I call myself a lumberjack.

0:37:40 > 0:37:43Right. This is my examination board here.

0:37:43 > 0:37:4515 minutes, I've got to cut down five trees,

0:37:45 > 0:37:48process them into logs, the dangle head processor.

0:37:48 > 0:37:51- Uh-hmm.- Load them onto the truck. The full job, yeah?- Yes.

0:37:51 > 0:37:54- 15 minutes. That's all you give me? - Yup, 15 minutes to do all that.

0:37:54 > 0:37:57It starts 15 minutes when I'm in the cabin start working, yes?

0:37:57 > 0:37:58- Yeah, run.- Five trees.

0:37:58 > 0:38:00- Yeah.- Five trees.

0:38:00 > 0:38:03I'm going to do it. I'm going to run the buckle.

0:38:03 > 0:38:04All right, let's see.

0:38:05 > 0:38:07All right. We're ready.

0:38:07 > 0:38:10Oh, God. Right. This is it. Exam time.

0:38:10 > 0:38:11Here I go and...

0:38:11 > 0:38:13let's get this in place.

0:38:13 > 0:38:15There is my first tree.

0:38:15 > 0:38:17Let's start the saw.

0:38:17 > 0:38:18Where's the saw button?

0:38:18 > 0:38:19Where's the saw...? Oh, there is.

0:38:19 > 0:38:24This is it. I'm going to do my first tree. Oh, God I'm really nervous,

0:38:24 > 0:38:25I really am nervous.

0:38:25 > 0:38:27Right, going forward.

0:38:27 > 0:38:31As soon as I see anything like cutting, close those.

0:38:34 > 0:38:35I got a tree.

0:38:35 > 0:38:36'All right, Richard.

0:38:36 > 0:38:39'All right. Good job. Pick it up and just set it down.'

0:38:42 > 0:38:43Oops, yeah.

0:38:43 > 0:38:44One down. Four to go.

0:38:44 > 0:38:48Let's extend these forwards. Let's just stay calm.

0:38:48 > 0:38:50Richard, stay calm.

0:38:52 > 0:38:54Uh-oh. Uh-oh. Hang on.

0:38:54 > 0:38:59Oh, no, no, no. Come on. Oh, no!

0:39:02 > 0:39:06OK. That wasn't neat but it's down.

0:39:10 > 0:39:13That one I've got. That one I've got.

0:39:13 > 0:39:15Let's get rid of it.

0:39:15 > 0:39:17Let's have this one.

0:39:18 > 0:39:20Towards it, down.

0:39:20 > 0:39:23So, forwards and close.

0:39:24 > 0:39:26That's mine. You're mine. You are mine.

0:39:26 > 0:39:28Definitely you're my big tree.

0:39:29 > 0:39:30Come to Papa!

0:39:30 > 0:39:31Oh, not that quickly.

0:39:31 > 0:39:32Don't do that.

0:39:32 > 0:39:35Let's get rid of another one. we go. Here we go.

0:39:35 > 0:39:36'Everyone's getting worried.'

0:39:36 > 0:39:38Get ready to drop.

0:39:40 > 0:39:41Last one.

0:39:45 > 0:39:48There you go. There you go.

0:39:53 > 0:39:55I got it.

0:39:55 > 0:39:56Whoa!

0:39:56 > 0:39:58Oh!

0:39:58 > 0:40:00It got away.

0:40:00 > 0:40:02You know I think I'll give you a pass on that.

0:40:02 > 0:40:04You're coming up on six minutes

0:40:04 > 0:40:06and you still have two more pieces of equipment to go.

0:40:06 > 0:40:08It's going to be tight.

0:40:08 > 0:40:10I am out of here.

0:40:10 > 0:40:11Right.

0:40:11 > 0:40:15This is the dangle head processor and yeah,

0:40:15 > 0:40:17this is the one I dread.

0:40:17 > 0:40:20If I hit the wrong control at the wrong time

0:40:20 > 0:40:24I can send a log hurtling back into the cab killing myself.

0:40:24 > 0:40:27But it's absolutely probably the most important one.

0:40:27 > 0:40:29So, these are my logs here.

0:40:29 > 0:40:32Just remember your training. Don't think about it and just do it.

0:40:32 > 0:40:34This is the most incredible device, this machine.

0:40:34 > 0:40:38It really is, it dices, it slices, it does the lot.

0:40:38 > 0:40:41I wonder if it makes those melons into balls.

0:40:41 > 0:40:45Right, let's... That's a bit dodgy on the end cos that where my saw went in twice.

0:40:45 > 0:40:47So, I'll cut that bit off.

0:40:47 > 0:40:48There you go.

0:40:48 > 0:40:50Oh, I've made a log right there

0:40:50 > 0:40:53and then it's just... The saw...

0:40:55 > 0:40:56There you go.

0:40:56 > 0:40:59That's one log, I've processed one.

0:40:59 > 0:41:00Ooh.

0:41:01 > 0:41:04I think I've got that, there you go,

0:41:04 > 0:41:07there it goes.

0:41:07 > 0:41:09- Whoa.- Number two.

0:41:09 > 0:41:10Number two down.

0:41:10 > 0:41:13OK. So, let's get that turned and ready.

0:41:13 > 0:41:16Is this number three? I'm losing count.

0:41:16 > 0:41:18It's really tense now.

0:41:18 > 0:41:22A little claws, now, yes, we do. Closing the arms.

0:41:22 > 0:41:26Let's turn that into a log, processing. That's perfect.

0:41:26 > 0:41:30Yeah. I think that was good. I think that went well. That's mine.

0:41:30 > 0:41:33I don't know, getting that thing snortin'.

0:41:36 > 0:41:38You hit the one button. Zing!

0:41:44 > 0:41:47Now, you're gettin' it, now you're gettin' it. Good job, Richard.

0:41:47 > 0:41:49Yeah, Rich. You've got five trees done

0:41:49 > 0:41:53and you've got a little over one minute to get them on the truck.

0:41:53 > 0:41:56I can do that, I can do that. Right, so...

0:41:56 > 0:41:59All right, Richard. This is it.

0:41:59 > 0:42:01We've got a little over one minute left.

0:42:01 > 0:42:02Due to that fact,

0:42:02 > 0:42:06I'm going to allow you to take any five logs out of that deck

0:42:06 > 0:42:08and put them on this truck safely. Got it?

0:42:08 > 0:42:09Yeah. I got it, got it.

0:42:09 > 0:42:12OK. And if you do that, you win.

0:42:12 > 0:42:13OK. Here I go.

0:42:13 > 0:42:17I'm terrified of hitting this truck. It's such a nice thing.

0:42:17 > 0:42:20Ooh, I'm nervous of hitting it, I really am.

0:42:20 > 0:42:22We're going to do one first.

0:42:24 > 0:42:26Lookin' good, Richard. Lookin' good.

0:42:26 > 0:42:28Oh, I don't want to hit that truck.

0:42:30 > 0:42:32Go ahead, go ahead.

0:42:35 > 0:42:36Get another one quick.

0:42:36 > 0:42:39Get four of 'em fast, come on, Richard.

0:42:39 > 0:42:40What's the time left?

0:42:40 > 0:42:4330 seconds, Richard, 30 seconds.

0:42:43 > 0:42:44- He's getting two of 'em. - There you go.

0:42:44 > 0:42:48Two if 'em, heel 'em up and put 'em on the truck as fast as you can.

0:42:48 > 0:42:50You've got 10 second countdown here.

0:42:50 > 0:42:52Ten,

0:42:52 > 0:42:53nine.

0:42:53 > 0:42:56- Oh, no.- Eight. - I'm not going to do this.

0:42:56 > 0:42:57A little more to the right.

0:42:57 > 0:42:59Seven, six,

0:42:59 > 0:43:03five, four,

0:43:03 > 0:43:05three,

0:43:05 > 0:43:07two,

0:43:07 > 0:43:09two and a half,

0:43:09 > 0:43:11one and a half.

0:43:11 > 0:43:13- KLAXON - Where's the bloody button?

0:43:13 > 0:43:18Oh, no. I can't even find the button to...

0:43:18 > 0:43:20Oh!

0:43:20 > 0:43:23Is that it? Is that my time?

0:43:23 > 0:43:24That was it.

0:43:24 > 0:43:27- They're three good ones. - They're good.

0:43:27 > 0:43:28They're not just any three.

0:43:28 > 0:43:30No, they're not just any three.

0:43:30 > 0:43:32They're nice big three logs.

0:43:32 > 0:43:34Oh.

0:43:34 > 0:43:36All right, oh, you look very severe.

0:43:36 > 0:43:38- Yeah.- And critical.

0:43:38 > 0:43:40Come on then, talk me through my final exam.

0:43:40 > 0:43:41Let's go through it one by one.

0:43:41 > 0:43:43The feller-buncher, cutting in the beginning.

0:43:43 > 0:43:48You actually did decent, a few got away.

0:43:48 > 0:43:51Whoa. Oh!

0:43:51 > 0:43:53- It got away.- But that happens.

0:43:53 > 0:43:55The processor?

0:43:55 > 0:43:58I think that you did very well in the processor.

0:43:58 > 0:44:00I think that the first go-around,

0:44:00 > 0:44:02it was a little, touch and go, to say the least.

0:44:02 > 0:44:08But I think the last go round, I saw 200% improvement, not 100 but 200.

0:44:08 > 0:44:12That's cool, that something. And then the loader.

0:44:12 > 0:44:16Since your trainer was my father, I'll try to be nice.

0:44:16 > 0:44:22But it, yeah, yeah... It needed a little bit of work.

0:44:22 > 0:44:27So lumberjack marks out of ten possibly, ten being full-blown.

0:44:27 > 0:44:29What do you think guys, 2.2?

0:44:33 > 0:44:34I'd give him a 7.9.

0:44:34 > 0:44:3780%, 80%.

0:44:37 > 0:44:39Honestly, the experience of learning how to,

0:44:39 > 0:44:42just at a basic level, run the machines here.

0:44:42 > 0:44:46And I'm not making this up just cos you're standing there with axes and you're bigger than me.

0:44:46 > 0:44:51Genuinely, I will look at areas of woodland differently.

0:44:51 > 0:44:55You definitely do get a different respect for people, when you actually have to do their job.

0:44:55 > 0:44:58So, at least a logging nod?

0:44:58 > 0:45:02- I'll give you the nod. - There's the nod. Here's your axe.

0:45:02 > 0:45:04Oh. Thank you very much indeed.

0:45:04 > 0:45:06Right, I'm going to put that one on.

0:45:06 > 0:45:08That's a proper hat.

0:45:08 > 0:45:09That's the proper hat. There it is.

0:45:09 > 0:45:11You might have to adjust it but...

0:45:11 > 0:45:12Looks good.

0:45:12 > 0:45:14I suspect I look magnificent here.

0:45:14 > 0:45:17- Yeah.- And the buckle. - And the buckle. That's the pride.

0:45:17 > 0:45:19You see. It's been brilliant. I've learned a lot.

0:45:19 > 0:45:22- Thank you.- I loved the experience. I hope you've learned a lot as well.

0:45:22 > 0:45:23We have learned a lot.

0:45:25 > 0:45:28Well, so long, little fella. I have to leave now.

0:45:28 > 0:45:31Hope I've got you off to a good start

0:45:31 > 0:45:33and I shall be back in 50 years.

0:45:33 > 0:45:36I might look a bit different, you will too.

0:45:36 > 0:45:39I'll stand there in the shade.
