0:00:04 > 0:00:07Every day, barges like this one arrive here,

0:00:07 > 0:00:11each loaded with up to 100,000 pounds of salvage.

0:00:11 > 0:00:14So to get that off there and on to here,

0:00:14 > 0:00:17you're going to need a big crane.

0:00:17 > 0:00:19A really big crane.

0:00:19 > 0:00:22I've driven just about every high-powered vehicle there is,

0:00:22 > 0:00:25but that was just for fun. The world's biggest,

0:00:25 > 0:00:27baddest vehicles are made to work.

0:00:27 > 0:00:30So now I've decided to travel across the United States

0:00:30 > 0:00:33to see if I can conquer the monsters of the worksite.

0:00:33 > 0:00:37I'll have just three days to learn how to handle

0:00:37 > 0:00:39these complex and dangerous machines

0:00:39 > 0:00:42that normally take years of training to master.

0:00:42 > 0:00:46And in the end we'll find out if I'm good enough to get the job done.

0:00:49 > 0:00:51I'm at D&L Salvage, Franklin, Louisiana.

0:00:51 > 0:00:54Every day, hundreds and thousands of pounds of marine scrap

0:00:54 > 0:00:58from offshore oil rigs and the like arrives here on barges.

0:00:58 > 0:01:01I've set myself the task of learning to operate the three key pieces

0:01:01 > 0:01:04of heavy machinery they use to process that salvage.

0:01:04 > 0:01:09From the friction cranes that lift it off the barge and onto the land,

0:01:09 > 0:01:11to the material handlers, the magnet and grapple

0:01:11 > 0:01:15that sifts through it for the valuable metals to be recycled.

0:01:15 > 0:01:16At the end of three days,

0:01:16 > 0:01:20I'm going to be responsible for my own barge load of salvage.

0:01:20 > 0:01:24I'll have to use all three machines to process it in 15 minutes.

0:01:24 > 0:01:30If I can do that, then I'll be able to call myself a real salvage man.

0:01:30 > 0:01:32Wish me luck.

0:01:38 > 0:01:40So Jimmy, this is your baby.

0:01:40 > 0:01:42You've been running these things for 6 years?

0:01:42 > 0:01:44- Yes.- How much can it lift?

0:01:44 > 0:01:46It can lift 150 tons.

0:01:46 > 0:01:49- And how long is that boom? - That boom is a hundred foot.

0:01:49 > 0:01:53So all the numbers on this thing are big. I'm just looking...

0:01:53 > 0:01:55- these are the counterweights? - Right.

0:01:55 > 0:01:59- What do they weigh? Look at them. They're HUGE!- They're about 20 tons each block.

0:01:59 > 0:02:02- Can I get in and have a go?- Yes. - Go on.

0:02:02 > 0:02:03Oh, this is big!

0:02:03 > 0:02:04SIREN SOUNDS

0:02:04 > 0:02:06Sorry about that.

0:02:06 > 0:02:08A bit bad today. Love what you've done with the seat.

0:02:08 > 0:02:10It's really nice.

0:02:10 > 0:02:12Oh, this thing's seen some duty! Look at that!

0:02:12 > 0:02:15- What do I do?- Well, let me show you how to run it first.

0:02:15 > 0:02:18Oh. Yeah. I just wanted to check. That's nice.

0:02:18 > 0:02:20Good, it fits. Carry on.

0:02:20 > 0:02:22ENGINE ROARS INTO LIFE

0:02:22 > 0:02:23Oh, yeah!

0:02:23 > 0:02:26It's good soundproofing!

0:02:27 > 0:02:29Oh, stuff's happening!

0:02:29 > 0:02:32This is a proper big machine with big rusty levers

0:02:32 > 0:02:35and oh, it's all... oh, we're moving!

0:02:35 > 0:02:39- OK.- A good way to practise.

0:02:39 > 0:02:40Keep your boom up.

0:02:40 > 0:02:43- Take it in, your boom. - Pull it back, yeah.

0:02:43 > 0:02:45Always try to set your block on something small.

0:02:45 > 0:02:49That block weighs a lot, doesn't it? That's a big lump of metal.

0:02:50 > 0:02:52- I can do that. - Would you like to try it?

0:02:54 > 0:02:55Yeah!

0:02:57 > 0:03:00Right. So barge is there. I'm ready to do this, aren't I?

0:03:00 > 0:03:01- Right.- I know the controls.

0:03:01 > 0:03:03What else do I need to know?

0:03:03 > 0:03:05- Hand signals.- Well, I can't use hand signals.

0:03:05 > 0:03:07- I'm operating it.- From this guy.

0:03:07 > 0:03:10He's going to hand signal you. That's Marty.

0:03:10 > 0:03:12Marty, hi. Right.

0:03:12 > 0:03:15What hand signals, then? I have seen these before. Is that all this business?

0:03:15 > 0:03:18Yeah. Boom up, boom down.

0:03:18 > 0:03:20- Demonstrate.- Boom up.- Boom up.

0:03:20 > 0:03:23Boom down and then come up easy,

0:03:23 > 0:03:24like this, come up slow

0:03:24 > 0:03:27- and then come down slow with the fast lines, like this.- Yeah.

0:03:27 > 0:03:30- Pick up.- So, that's just... that means what?

0:03:30 > 0:03:32- Full speed away. - Right, go with it.

0:03:32 > 0:03:34- So, that means slow.- Right.

0:03:34 > 0:03:36- That means just go crazy.- Yup.

0:03:37 > 0:03:39'This is genuinely exciting.

0:03:39 > 0:03:42'My first time getting to operate this enormous crane.

0:03:42 > 0:03:44'I can't wait!'

0:03:53 > 0:03:55It's not going now.

0:04:03 > 0:04:07- Yeah.- Is she having a bad day?

0:04:10 > 0:04:15This old girl's done her work. This crane is over 100 feet long

0:04:15 > 0:04:16and weighs over 100 tons,

0:04:16 > 0:04:21and I've managed to break it in less than five minutes.

0:04:21 > 0:04:23- Well, it's nearly as old as me, to be fair.- Yeah.

0:04:23 > 0:04:25So, you know, I have off days.

0:04:25 > 0:04:28I don't see why the crane shouldn't.

0:04:29 > 0:04:32Right. What's the news? Lee, you're the fixer.

0:04:32 > 0:04:35I changed the little poppet valve

0:04:35 > 0:04:37- to see if I can fix it.- What? You fixed it already?

0:04:37 > 0:04:39- Uh, we're trying to. - Yeah. It's a poppet valve.

0:04:39 > 0:04:42That's what I thought it was. I was going to say that.

0:04:42 > 0:04:43What does a poppet valve do?

0:04:43 > 0:04:48It's a check valve for the hydraulics.

0:04:48 > 0:04:50Without the hydraulics, you got no crane.

0:04:50 > 0:04:52Yeah. Right, fire it up and let's give it a go.

0:04:59 > 0:05:02It doesn't work.

0:05:04 > 0:05:05Yeah, it's not the poppet valve.

0:05:05 > 0:05:09It's... it's something else. Yeah.

0:05:09 > 0:05:12A crane that doesn't lift is kind of a dismal thing.

0:05:14 > 0:05:17What else can it do?

0:05:17 > 0:05:21Hit by lightning, I suppose. That's about it.

0:05:22 > 0:05:24It's not the poppet valve.

0:05:24 > 0:05:26It's gonna be all right.

0:05:26 > 0:05:29It's gonna be OK. It'll be fixed.

0:05:32 > 0:05:35I won't lie, it's not looking brilliant,

0:05:35 > 0:05:37but it's not over.

0:05:37 > 0:05:38This is a long fight.

0:05:38 > 0:05:40She's still hanging on in there.

0:05:40 > 0:05:42We've all just got to hope and give her time.

0:05:42 > 0:05:45It's going to be a long night. Get comfortable.

0:05:47 > 0:05:51OK. I'm gonna need plenty of boiling water and a lot of towels.

0:05:51 > 0:05:54I have no idea what for, but they always need them.

0:05:54 > 0:05:58Breathe, damn you, breathe! You can't just give up!

0:05:58 > 0:06:00You need a wrench? I've got a wrench.

0:06:00 > 0:06:03Come on. You know you need it.

0:06:06 > 0:06:08This thing's thirsty!

0:06:08 > 0:06:13It's a big machine. And she's got a big appetite.

0:06:13 > 0:06:15That's hydraulic fluid going in.

0:06:15 > 0:06:18I've never seen so much of it poured out in my life.

0:06:18 > 0:06:22Maybe topping up more than once every 10 years?

0:06:22 > 0:06:24Let's see if that'll work.

0:06:30 > 0:06:32This old girl's done her work.

0:06:32 > 0:06:35I don't mean you when I say, "This old girl." Obviously,

0:06:35 > 0:06:37- I mean the crane. Yeah.- What's that? - Nothing.

0:06:38 > 0:06:42Jimmy, sorry about your crane.

0:06:42 > 0:06:45If you need me, just call. I'm here for you.

0:06:49 > 0:06:51Well, the news is it's not good.

0:06:51 > 0:06:53It's not well.

0:06:53 > 0:06:56This crane has functioned perfectly for the best part of 40 years

0:06:56 > 0:06:59and after justm well, a couple of minutes with me...

0:06:59 > 0:07:02Maybe we didn't see eye-to-eye. Maybe it was never meant to be.

0:07:02 > 0:07:05It's not terminal. She is fixable.

0:07:05 > 0:07:08But on the other hand, I suppose this is a crane yard.

0:07:08 > 0:07:11They do have many, many other cranes, so I'll use one of them.

0:07:16 > 0:07:17Right. So we have another crane.

0:07:17 > 0:07:20Is this exactly the same as the last?

0:07:22 > 0:07:25- So, he'll tell you to boom down until it's over him, I guess.- Right.

0:07:25 > 0:07:27Stop.

0:07:27 > 0:07:30Now, he'll hook it up. We'll just wait.

0:07:30 > 0:07:32So, he's now asking for up.

0:07:32 > 0:07:34We are lifting.

0:07:34 > 0:07:39- So if you needed to steer it, someone would grab that line?- Right.

0:07:39 > 0:07:42And then you're feathering the brake and the throttle

0:07:42 > 0:07:43to just take it down.

0:07:43 > 0:07:46That's the gist of it.

0:07:46 > 0:07:50- OK. So are you happy for me to have a go?- Yeah.- Great.

0:07:50 > 0:07:54OK. I'm driving a massive crane.

0:07:54 > 0:07:57This is quite... I've never done this.

0:07:57 > 0:07:59Why is that swinging towards us? Ugh!

0:07:59 > 0:08:01Right now I'm trying to swing this crane over to Marty

0:08:01 > 0:08:04so he can hook up the pipes that need to be unloaded

0:08:04 > 0:08:07from the barge, but I'm having a real difficult time

0:08:07 > 0:08:11with the crane's pendulum effect. Once the load starts swaying

0:08:11 > 0:08:13it's hard to get it to stop

0:08:13 > 0:08:17and tons of salvage swinging out of control is seriously dangerous.

0:08:17 > 0:08:19Why are they letting me do this?

0:08:19 > 0:08:21How do I stop it doing that?

0:08:21 > 0:08:24When it swings out that way, you boom down and give it some gas.

0:08:27 > 0:08:30So this is just to try and stop it swinging? This is really hard.

0:08:30 > 0:08:32I'm gonna hit it.

0:08:32 > 0:08:35This stopping-it-swing business,

0:08:35 > 0:08:39- that's the kind of artistry in what you do, isn't it?- Right.

0:08:39 > 0:08:42I didn't see you doing it. You were cancelling out the oscillation.

0:08:42 > 0:08:45- That's another signal for come up easy.- Yes.

0:08:45 > 0:08:48- So, it's this one, yeah?- Right. - Pull this back.- Pull it back.

0:08:50 > 0:08:53- Up easy.- On the line. - On your line.

0:08:53 > 0:08:54And that's back.

0:08:57 > 0:08:59Oh! That's bad, isn't it?

0:08:59 > 0:09:02Uh, nothing you can really do about that.

0:09:02 > 0:09:06- What do I do? Hoist it up?- Just stop so he can grab his tag line.

0:09:06 > 0:09:09Operating a crane can go horribly wrong.

0:09:09 > 0:09:13As the crane operator, I must coordinate with Marty on the ground.

0:09:13 > 0:09:16The hook and chain weighs hundreds of pounds and if I swing it wildly,

0:09:16 > 0:09:19I could easily kill him. I've already broken a crane -

0:09:19 > 0:09:22let's hope I don't break Marty. And now what?

0:09:24 > 0:09:27All right. Just come up with it and bring it over to your left.

0:09:28 > 0:09:33'Jimmy is a man of few words and usually I kind of admire that.

0:09:33 > 0:09:35'Just not when someone is supposed to be teaching me

0:09:35 > 0:09:40'the details of operating a potentially lethal crane.'

0:09:40 > 0:09:43So I need to get this over there?

0:09:43 > 0:09:45That ought to be good enough.

0:09:47 > 0:09:50That's going all over the place, isn't it?

0:09:50 > 0:09:53I'm making life quite hard for him, aren't I?

0:09:56 > 0:09:58HE LAUGHS

0:09:59 > 0:10:01And it's shut down.

0:10:01 > 0:10:04Um, that's a lot harder than I expected.

0:10:04 > 0:10:07The stuff that Jimmy does to stop that pendulum effect

0:10:07 > 0:10:10from swinging around and, let's be straight, Marty,

0:10:10 > 0:10:12killing you, it's hard.

0:10:12 > 0:10:15- With the right amount of experience...- Yeah.

0:10:15 > 0:10:17..it's pretty easy.

0:10:17 > 0:10:20I think I need some more practice.

0:10:25 > 0:10:28Clearly, if I'm ever to pass my final exam

0:10:28 > 0:10:31and be able to call myself a salvage man,

0:10:31 > 0:10:34I'm going to have to find a way to master the pendulum effect.

0:10:34 > 0:10:38I've had a think about this and I've come up with something, frankly, brilliant.

0:10:38 > 0:10:40I need practice with the crane. Right?

0:10:40 > 0:10:43That means practice picking things up and putting them down,

0:10:43 > 0:10:45carefully and in a controlled manner.

0:10:45 > 0:10:46And what better way to do that

0:10:46 > 0:10:49than with a giant version of a popular children's game

0:10:49 > 0:10:51in which you pick things up and put them back down again

0:10:51 > 0:10:54in small spaces, body parts maybe,

0:10:54 > 0:10:56or bones without touching the sides.

0:10:56 > 0:10:58Well, I've done exactly that. There's plenty of stuff

0:10:58 > 0:11:02to choose from here, and I've assembled my own version of the game.

0:11:02 > 0:11:05Down here, are the legs. In there, are the guts.

0:11:05 > 0:11:07Then up here, we have the arms. And just to finish

0:11:07 > 0:11:11the whole thing off, my bit of set dressing if you like, needed a head.

0:11:11 > 0:11:14Well, I'm near New Orleans, the heart of Mardi Gras.

0:11:14 > 0:11:17So, I went to one of their top Mardi Gras head builders

0:11:17 > 0:11:19and commissioned them to build me one.

0:11:19 > 0:11:22But as a little extra touch, my whimsy, if you will,

0:11:22 > 0:11:24I sent them an email with a photo of me

0:11:24 > 0:11:29and they've made it in my image, so it's me.

0:11:29 > 0:11:32I haven't seen it yet. This is my first go,

0:11:32 > 0:11:34so this will be pretty good.

0:11:34 > 0:11:36Aah!

0:11:37 > 0:11:41Maybe the email didn't come through properly. That can happen.

0:11:41 > 0:11:45OK. We are just about set. And I'm going to use

0:11:45 > 0:11:47the French variation of the rules for this game.

0:11:47 > 0:11:51If I hit the sides more than once, I'll have failed the test.

0:11:51 > 0:11:54If I do touch the sides, then this noise will sound.

0:11:54 > 0:11:56BUZZER SOUNDS

0:11:56 > 0:11:58There you go. Right. Are we ready to do this?

0:11:58 > 0:12:01- OK.- He's so into this. It's unbelievable.

0:12:01 > 0:12:04- Forward. Oh-whoo!- Press the button. - Ooh! This one?- Yes.

0:12:04 > 0:12:07RINGER SOUNDS

0:12:07 > 0:12:10It's all really noisy, this machine. Oh, right.

0:12:10 > 0:12:13- So, here we go.- Forward. - Oh, pull it back.

0:12:15 > 0:12:19- Oh, that's loud, isn't it?- Brake? - What?- Your brake. Left foot.

0:12:19 > 0:12:22- Left foot. Left brake. - Left brake? Oh, there you go.

0:12:22 > 0:12:25- Oh, yeah. - You can start swinging.

0:12:27 > 0:12:29I've gone a bit far. I've gone of bit far.

0:12:29 > 0:12:32And now, I'm going to let it down, yeah?

0:12:32 > 0:12:34- Brake.- Which brake? Oh, that brake.

0:12:34 > 0:12:37Yeah, OK. I got it. Brakes are on.

0:12:37 > 0:12:39He loves this. He's loving this game.

0:12:42 > 0:12:45Soon we'll be going for our first lift. This is a critical moment.

0:12:45 > 0:12:48Give it some juice.

0:12:50 > 0:12:52Oh, that's the brake.

0:12:52 > 0:12:56Get that last little bit out before it touches. There you go.

0:12:56 > 0:12:57See? That's an arm. Done.

0:12:57 > 0:13:00Let's go get another arm. All right, so hang on that stack.

0:13:00 > 0:13:05- Wrong one.- Oh, wrong one. I didn't listen to his orders there, did I?

0:13:05 > 0:13:08Oh, I've done it wrong again.

0:13:08 > 0:13:11I put it in first and then take the brakes, right?

0:13:11 > 0:13:13Pull it first then release the brakes.

0:13:13 > 0:13:15Oh, it's touched!

0:13:15 > 0:13:17BUZZER SOUNDS

0:13:17 > 0:13:20Oh, there's nothing I can do here.

0:13:20 > 0:13:22It's out now, though. It's out now.

0:13:22 > 0:13:25And then a bit of a left swing.

0:13:25 > 0:13:28Whoa, sorry.

0:13:28 > 0:13:32Nice. He knows I'm good. He can tell.

0:13:32 > 0:13:36Down, there's more to operating a crane than ever I thought.

0:13:36 > 0:13:40- Make sure he's cleared your load before you come up.- Yes.

0:13:40 > 0:13:45Starting to lift... ahh, look at that.

0:13:45 > 0:13:47Oh, it's going to twist, so we'll get out before it...

0:13:47 > 0:13:50Oh, that's gone wrong.

0:13:50 > 0:13:54That's a lot of buzzing. Ahh.

0:13:54 > 0:13:58It's that little bit to get clear.

0:13:58 > 0:14:00Not only have I failed my first test as a crane operator

0:14:00 > 0:14:04but it took me twice as long as I thought it would to do so.

0:14:04 > 0:14:06Not a good start.

0:14:06 > 0:14:08I think it was good practice and I feel nowhere near ready

0:14:08 > 0:14:11for my challenge at the end of this.

0:14:11 > 0:14:14Well, it's the end of Day One here.

0:14:14 > 0:14:17And I've learned three things.

0:14:17 > 0:14:18One, operating a crane

0:14:18 > 0:14:21really is a lot harder than ever I thought it would be.

0:14:21 > 0:14:25Number two, should have given myself a lot more time for my game.

0:14:25 > 0:14:26Number three, I've got a long way to go

0:14:26 > 0:14:29before I'm ready for my final exam here.

0:14:29 > 0:14:31Oh, there is a fourth thing actually, which is,

0:14:31 > 0:14:33turns out I look nothing like Johnny Depp.

0:14:33 > 0:14:38Ah, no, I just thought maybe, but no, no, I don't. No.

0:14:38 > 0:14:41I'm here in Franklin, Louisiana,

0:14:41 > 0:14:45where I've given myself three days to master three pieces of equipment

0:14:45 > 0:14:46key to running a salvage yard -

0:14:46 > 0:14:51the crane, the material handler and the electromagnet.

0:14:51 > 0:14:56Yesterday, I found out I have no aptitude for the crane.

0:14:56 > 0:14:58Today, I'm hoping to do better.

0:14:58 > 0:15:02And now we come to the real precision, pinpoint accuracy,

0:15:02 > 0:15:06with, believe it or not, this enormous grapple.

0:15:10 > 0:15:14He's going to show me how it works. He's after that length of pipe.

0:15:15 > 0:15:16Oh, yeah!

0:15:20 > 0:15:23Well, I knew today was going to be about precision.

0:15:23 > 0:15:27I think he was tying his shoelaces with it then.

0:15:27 > 0:15:28Right.

0:15:28 > 0:15:29What else you got?

0:15:29 > 0:15:32Todd's feeling good about himself.

0:15:34 > 0:15:36Oh, trying to get challenging.

0:15:36 > 0:15:39I'm sure there's work these guys should be doing,

0:15:39 > 0:15:42but, I don't know, this is more important.

0:15:43 > 0:15:45Right.

0:15:46 > 0:15:49This'll test his mettle.

0:16:00 > 0:16:01Oh, hang on!

0:16:03 > 0:16:06Yeah, well, it was dirty, but he got it.

0:16:06 > 0:16:10Right. Well, there's no putting this off. It's my go. I can do that.

0:16:13 > 0:16:15This got three sticks.

0:16:15 > 0:16:18What that means is you got that bit, that bit

0:16:18 > 0:16:19and then another bit down.

0:16:19 > 0:16:23I haven't used that... I haven't used a three-stick boom before!

0:16:23 > 0:16:25- That's to boom it up and down. - Yeah.

0:16:25 > 0:16:28You push it sideways and make the other stick go up.

0:16:28 > 0:16:32That make you pull it up and down, and you push to the side and make the other stick work.

0:16:32 > 0:16:36- I'm following all of that. I need you to know that. Right. - Yeah, you'll figure it out.

0:16:36 > 0:16:40- What you're saying is just work it out for yourself? - Work it out for yourself.- OK. OK.

0:16:40 > 0:16:43Right. So, let's just practise working this.

0:16:43 > 0:16:46So, let's just get that up.

0:16:46 > 0:16:48So, the teeth open and shut like that.

0:16:48 > 0:16:50Oh, they're slow! So that's about precision.

0:16:50 > 0:16:53And then this rotates.

0:16:53 > 0:16:55What should I go for? Something big.

0:16:55 > 0:16:58- Pick up that old valve over there. - OK. That old valve there. Whoa!

0:16:58 > 0:17:00Straight ahead.

0:17:00 > 0:17:02That's quite a reach, but I'm going to get to it.

0:17:02 > 0:17:04Whoa!

0:17:05 > 0:17:07Whoa! Oh!

0:17:07 > 0:17:09Whoa! That is something!

0:17:09 > 0:17:12It doesn't really... Yeah, it's not very gentle.

0:17:12 > 0:17:14It moves. It swings a lot.

0:17:20 > 0:17:21Oh, still not got it.

0:17:21 > 0:17:24Move it all the way.

0:17:25 > 0:17:26Pick it up.

0:17:33 > 0:17:35Where do I put it?

0:17:35 > 0:17:38Put it down right there.

0:17:39 > 0:17:40Oh.

0:17:40 > 0:17:43What else can I go for that's smaller?

0:17:45 > 0:17:47- The what?- That one-inch piece of angle iron.

0:17:47 > 0:17:51- The what? Piece of angle iron?- Piece of angle iron. The one over by...

0:17:51 > 0:17:54Here's the problem I keep running into down here in Louisiana -

0:17:54 > 0:17:56the language barrier,

0:17:56 > 0:18:00which is odd, because I'm pretty sure we're both speaking English.

0:18:00 > 0:18:02You almost had it.

0:18:09 > 0:18:12- There you go!- You got it. - That was a good pick-up!

0:18:16 > 0:18:19That is deeply satisfying! You get to do this for a job.

0:18:23 > 0:18:26Now, Todd, one other thing I want to learn how to do while I'm here, OK?

0:18:26 > 0:18:28- What's that? - I've seen you do it.

0:18:28 > 0:18:31You're picking up stuff, but then throw it onto the pile.

0:18:31 > 0:18:35- I saw you flick it onto the pile. How do I...?- Flick it on the pile?

0:18:35 > 0:18:37Yeah. What can I do it with?

0:18:37 > 0:18:39Grab some of them little valves and that electric motor.

0:18:39 > 0:18:43- That right there in the front?- Yeah. - Grab that.- Grab that? Right, OK.

0:18:47 > 0:18:49You got to make it swing.

0:18:49 > 0:18:50How do I do that?

0:18:50 > 0:18:52Make the arm go up.

0:18:52 > 0:18:53Oh, I see. So, hang on.

0:18:57 > 0:19:02THAT...is immensely good fun.

0:19:02 > 0:19:05That is one of those rare occasions

0:19:05 > 0:19:08when something is actually even more fun than it looks to be.

0:19:08 > 0:19:10I loved doing that.

0:19:10 > 0:19:12There's moments when it all comes together,

0:19:12 > 0:19:13reaching out and getting it.

0:19:13 > 0:19:16There's a sense of being in something really massive

0:19:16 > 0:19:19using tiny little bits, and those adjustments...

0:19:19 > 0:19:22I got there. I think that's a brilliant, brilliant occupation.

0:19:22 > 0:19:27And the whole throwing thing - I think we can take that further.

0:19:27 > 0:19:30- Do you got five minutes? - I got five minutes.

0:19:30 > 0:19:33- We can fill it.- OK. - I got a good idea. Bear with me.

0:19:37 > 0:19:40So using the grapple is all about accuracy and precision,

0:19:40 > 0:19:43not just in picking things up, but also in placing them,

0:19:43 > 0:19:45or even throwing them where you want them to be.

0:19:45 > 0:19:48You see? You can probably see where this is going.

0:19:48 > 0:19:51It's time for a little game of lawn balls, if you're American.

0:19:51 > 0:19:53If you're British, it's crown green bowling.

0:19:53 > 0:19:55If you're Italian, it's bocce.

0:19:55 > 0:19:59If you're French, it's les boules, or if you're being colloquial, it's actually petanque.

0:19:59 > 0:20:03Anyway, you take the point. The game is, there's a jack. We have a jack over there.

0:20:03 > 0:20:06You then have to throw your balls as close to it as you can.

0:20:06 > 0:20:07And our balls are over there.

0:20:07 > 0:20:10Technically, they're refrigerators, but that's the point.

0:20:10 > 0:20:13We're upscaling this because we'll be throwing them,

0:20:13 > 0:20:15with the grapple.

0:20:15 > 0:20:17You see? Brilliant!

0:20:17 > 0:20:21Probably best if Todd goes first again and I'll keep score

0:20:21 > 0:20:23and maybe I'm going to watch to see if I can get some hints

0:20:23 > 0:20:25and tips on how to do this.

0:20:25 > 0:20:26It's going to be brilliant.

0:20:26 > 0:20:29OK, if we are ready, we are going to do this.

0:20:29 > 0:20:32Let's bowl! I don't know if they do that when they play bowls, but I do.

0:20:32 > 0:20:34Yeah!

0:20:34 > 0:20:37That doesn't usually happen with a game of lawn bowling, does it?

0:20:37 > 0:20:39It's all...

0:20:39 > 0:20:40This is better.

0:20:40 > 0:20:43The ball laid out there ready.

0:20:43 > 0:20:46I say ball. It's a fridge, but you know what I mean.

0:20:46 > 0:20:49Yes, we have made them safe, before you ask, obviously.

0:20:49 > 0:20:52Classic bowler's grip there.

0:20:52 > 0:20:55I'd say lightly gripped in the fingers.

0:20:55 > 0:20:59Oh, yeah. He begins to bowl. He begins his swing. Here we go. Oh, this is tremendous!

0:21:05 > 0:21:07I could be in trouble.

0:21:08 > 0:21:10Nice bowling. Yeah. Very good.

0:21:10 > 0:21:14Yeah. Well, now you'll see something.

0:21:14 > 0:21:15Here we go. Right. Let's rev it up.

0:21:15 > 0:21:18Yeah! Oh, God, that's a good start.

0:21:18 > 0:21:20OK, first, pick up my ball.

0:21:20 > 0:21:22Oh, this is going to take ages, lads.

0:21:29 > 0:21:31I got myself a ball, there I go.

0:21:33 > 0:21:36Yeah, give it some turn, give it some turn, give it some turn.

0:21:38 > 0:21:41Oh, that hasn't gone at all well.

0:21:41 > 0:21:45- Yeah, um, I messed that up quite badly.- OK.- Yeah. Good luck.

0:21:45 > 0:21:48OK, ball number two for Todd, bowling red.

0:21:48 > 0:21:50Nice swing.

0:21:52 > 0:21:54Lovely release...

0:21:54 > 0:21:56and there it is.

0:21:56 > 0:21:59Yeah, that's...

0:21:59 > 0:22:00even closer than his first one.

0:22:00 > 0:22:02Let's see what he's going to do.

0:22:02 > 0:22:05Give it the beans! Yeah!

0:22:05 > 0:22:07Right. Yeah, you see, it's all going to be in the grip, this one.

0:22:07 > 0:22:10Let's just get it... Whoa!

0:22:10 > 0:22:14A bit further along there, and then down, a little twist.

0:22:16 > 0:22:18Oh, that's a good one.

0:22:18 > 0:22:20And...

0:22:21 > 0:22:23Oh.

0:22:23 > 0:22:24Yeah.

0:22:24 > 0:22:26Again, too much top spin.

0:22:26 > 0:22:27Todd, did you see that wind?

0:22:27 > 0:22:30All of a sudden, that gust of wind just...

0:22:30 > 0:22:32I had it set up right but, ah, you know.

0:22:32 > 0:22:34What's that thing we have to do now

0:22:34 > 0:22:37when he's about to bowl fridges with a big crane?

0:22:37 > 0:22:39Run! That's it.

0:22:39 > 0:22:42Bowl number three now for Todd, bowling red.

0:22:44 > 0:22:47At the moment, it looks like Todd has the game. But who knows?

0:22:47 > 0:22:51There's some way to go. We're only halfway through yet.

0:22:57 > 0:22:59Bugger!

0:22:59 > 0:23:01You can say that on American TV.

0:23:01 > 0:23:04Here we go. We're nearly, nearly there.

0:23:04 > 0:23:06Now, let's go around and really bowl it.

0:23:06 > 0:23:09Let's bowl this. Let's play bowls.

0:23:11 > 0:23:12Oh, hell!

0:23:12 > 0:23:14Closer, though. Come on, it was closer.

0:23:14 > 0:23:17It was. You got a little closer that time.

0:23:17 > 0:23:21Bowl number four now for Todd, bowling red.

0:23:21 > 0:23:23Let's see where he places it.

0:23:23 > 0:23:26Oh, that's high. That's up high.

0:23:31 > 0:23:33Oh! Yeah.

0:23:35 > 0:23:39Oh, the next player's going to have to come up with something pretty special to beat that.

0:23:39 > 0:23:40Give it the beans!

0:23:40 > 0:23:43Right, Hammond, this is your final bowl.

0:23:47 > 0:23:48Yeah!

0:23:49 > 0:23:51Oh, come on!

0:23:54 > 0:23:57Let's just see, did I? I'm sure that last one did it.

0:23:57 > 0:23:59It just felt to me like it curved it. It didn't.

0:23:59 > 0:24:02It... Yeah, well. Lucky. You were closer on that one.

0:24:02 > 0:24:03And maybe that one.

0:24:03 > 0:24:05That's one's a bit closer.

0:24:05 > 0:24:08- And you were closer on all of them.- On all of them.- Yeah.

0:24:08 > 0:24:09But you gave it hell.

0:24:09 > 0:24:12Come on, that was a valuable exercise.

0:24:12 > 0:24:13We were proving a point.

0:24:13 > 0:24:16It was about accuracy and precision, and throwing, and balance.

0:24:16 > 0:24:18- And I learned.- You learned?

0:24:18 > 0:24:20You maybe even honed your skills a bit.

0:24:20 > 0:24:22Start of something great.

0:24:22 > 0:24:24- But I won the game.- Yeah!

0:24:24 > 0:24:26- Yeah, you did. You did. - Your game.

0:24:26 > 0:24:30- Yeah, yeah. My game, that I invented.- Yes.

0:24:30 > 0:24:33End of day two and I've learned some things today.

0:24:33 > 0:24:37I've learned that using a magnet on the end of a boom is much harder than I expected it to be,

0:24:37 > 0:24:42and that the whole grappling issue is great until you try and play lawn bowling.

0:24:42 > 0:24:43Then it's really, really hard.

0:24:43 > 0:24:46But amongst all of that, let's be honest, fun.

0:24:46 > 0:24:50Uh, have I learned enough to be anything like ready for my test at the end of all of this?

0:24:50 > 0:24:53No, I don't think I have. And I'm still conscious of the crane.

0:24:53 > 0:24:55It's really hard.

0:24:55 > 0:24:58It's literally looming over me like a, like a... Well, like a crane.

0:25:00 > 0:25:03We'll practise tomorrow. There's time.

0:25:03 > 0:25:04There's time.

0:25:04 > 0:25:07Good game, though. You ought to play it.

0:25:07 > 0:25:12Day two here in Franklin, Louisiana, where I set myself the challenge

0:25:12 > 0:25:15of proving I could make the grade as a salvage man.

0:25:15 > 0:25:19To do that, I need to master the three machines

0:25:19 > 0:25:21they use here to unload salvage barges

0:25:21 > 0:25:25and process the recyclable materials if I'm to pass my final exam.

0:25:25 > 0:25:29And I think... Well, I hope I got the really difficult stuff out of the way yesterday

0:25:29 > 0:25:32using the big crane to unload the salvage off the barge.

0:25:32 > 0:25:35I'm driving a massive crane!

0:25:35 > 0:25:39Once the salvage is on to the land, they need to sort through the piles

0:25:39 > 0:25:43to pick out the valuable metals from the other materials, wood and such.

0:25:43 > 0:25:47Yeah, they could go through it by hand but that would take ages.

0:25:47 > 0:25:50Instead, they could just use a massive magnet.

0:25:51 > 0:25:52HE CHUCKLES

0:25:56 > 0:26:01Todd, what we've got here is kind of a medium-sized trackhoe.

0:26:01 > 0:26:02I'm sort of familiar with this bit.

0:26:02 > 0:26:05What's more important is what's down here on the end of the boom.

0:26:05 > 0:26:08- And this is the magnet. - That's the magnet.

0:26:08 > 0:26:09- So that's an electromagnet?- Yeah.

0:26:09 > 0:26:13Got a generator inside it to the bottom that operates the magnet.

0:26:13 > 0:26:15So it's not like it's on all the time.

0:26:15 > 0:26:17No, you got a button to put it on or a button to cut it off.

0:26:17 > 0:26:20And how powerful is the magnet?

0:26:22 > 0:26:26- So you sift through... You dangle it over a pile of stuff like this? - Yeah.

0:26:26 > 0:26:29- And then all the metal jumps up and sticks to it?- Pretty much.

0:26:31 > 0:26:35Essentially, then, the salvage comes off the barge

0:26:35 > 0:26:38and it's got to be sorted to find the most valuable metals.

0:26:38 > 0:26:42What he wants out of there is that really thick curved piece of pipe.

0:26:45 > 0:26:49Oh, there's a nice piece in there, that nice curved piece.

0:26:49 > 0:26:50How did he do that?!

0:26:50 > 0:26:52He just picked up the pipe.

0:26:52 > 0:26:54That is impressive, genuinely.

0:26:58 > 0:27:01So he's put that down here to sort it further.

0:27:01 > 0:27:05I'd have thought he really was just waving a magnet around.

0:27:12 > 0:27:14That's how you do it.

0:27:14 > 0:27:17Well, I just thought you'd switch the magnet on and wave it about,

0:27:17 > 0:27:19pick up magnetic stuff and put it down.

0:27:19 > 0:27:22But it was the sifting with it that amazes.

0:27:24 > 0:27:26- Yeah. Uh-huh.- Getting it right.

0:27:26 > 0:27:29Right. Well, can I have a go, please? Can I? Can I have a go?

0:27:29 > 0:27:31- Yes, you can. - All right, I'll follow you.

0:27:31 > 0:27:34Right, so if I lift that, that's my main stick.

0:27:37 > 0:27:39I've never played with a giant magnet.

0:27:39 > 0:27:40- Push that down.- What?

0:27:40 > 0:27:42- Push down.- Push down?

0:27:46 > 0:27:48All right. So I put it down like that.

0:27:48 > 0:27:51- Just press the button. - And that puts the magnet on?- Yeah.

0:27:51 > 0:27:53Oh, a load of stuff. Look at that!

0:27:53 > 0:27:56This is like fishing. It's brilliant!

0:27:56 > 0:27:58I got that. That's all mine.

0:28:00 > 0:28:02I like this machine. This is fun.

0:28:02 > 0:28:06It's the simplest of machines. It's just a magnet on a boom, but...

0:28:06 > 0:28:08What do I want, what do I want?

0:28:08 > 0:28:11Er, I want that red thing right there.

0:28:11 > 0:28:12Oh, hello. Sorry.

0:28:18 > 0:28:20Do I?

0:28:25 > 0:28:28Now, I did mention I was having a slight problem

0:28:28 > 0:28:32with the language barrier down here in Louisiana, right?

0:28:32 > 0:28:34INDECIPHERABLE

0:28:34 > 0:28:35RICHARD LAUGHS

0:28:43 > 0:28:46The whole point of this operation is it is marine salvage,

0:28:46 > 0:28:50and that means the stuff they're salvaging tends to be at or near the sea.

0:28:50 > 0:28:53So somebody's got to go and get it, and when they're there,

0:28:53 > 0:28:55it's really hard work.

0:28:55 > 0:28:59At the end of the day, they're going to need somewhere to eat and somewhere to sleep,

0:28:59 > 0:29:02that's going to have to go with them and float.

0:29:02 > 0:29:04What they need is a barge.

0:29:04 > 0:29:07But not just any barge, but a specialised barge.

0:29:11 > 0:29:15- Please. This is it.- It's nice. Oh, I like what you've done.

0:29:15 > 0:29:16- Home from home.- Home from home.

0:29:16 > 0:29:18So, show me around.

0:29:18 > 0:29:20This would be one of our rooms here,

0:29:20 > 0:29:23like, for the company man, or you want to say the guy paying the bill.

0:29:23 > 0:29:25- Oh, right. So this is your first class.- First class.

0:29:28 > 0:29:31- It's nice. It's basic. It's got what you need.- Got what you need.

0:29:31 > 0:29:35How long are we talking about being away on this thing?

0:29:35 > 0:29:39A job can usually last anywhere, probably, from five days to eight months.

0:29:39 > 0:29:42Eight months? Well, it's got the basics in, then.

0:29:44 > 0:29:47Oh, look. You see, I knew there'd be like a state room.

0:29:47 > 0:29:49This is where you hold balls, maybe parties?

0:29:49 > 0:29:52This is where the three meals a day are.

0:29:52 > 0:29:56You know, the guys after work wind down. They sit down, watch TV.

0:29:56 > 0:29:59What do they think of it? If they're to set off now and you say,

0:29:59 > 0:30:02"Right, see you in two months." What kind of time will they have?

0:30:02 > 0:30:05The worst thing is being away from the wife and kids.

0:30:05 > 0:30:09Other than that, they don't rough it, when it comes to food or conveniences of home.

0:30:09 > 0:30:12One thing you haven't shown me as we walked around is an engine room.

0:30:12 > 0:30:14And that's cos this barge hasn't got one.

0:30:14 > 0:30:17It's a barge, so how does it get to work?

0:30:17 > 0:30:19- Tug boat.- Tug boat?

0:30:19 > 0:30:21- Can I have a look at that?- Uh-huh.

0:30:21 > 0:30:25I might book with you guys next year. Nice, long cruise. Do you do the Nile ever?

0:30:31 > 0:30:34Oh, this is nice. Homely.

0:30:34 > 0:30:35Lovely.

0:30:35 > 0:30:38So this is just basically an engine that floats.

0:30:38 > 0:30:42- A lot of horsepower and push. - How much power has this thing got?

0:30:42 > 0:30:44This particular boat has 1,000 horsepower.

0:30:44 > 0:30:47Two 500-horsepower diesel engines, turbo-charged.

0:30:47 > 0:30:50- That's a lot of grunt, isn't it? - Lot of grunt.

0:30:50 > 0:30:53- Go on, then. Make it do something. - All right.

0:31:01 > 0:31:04As you notice, most of this thing's not with a wheel.

0:31:04 > 0:31:05It's mostly twin screw by here.

0:31:05 > 0:31:09One forward, one reverse to either walk it this way or that way.

0:31:09 > 0:31:11Keep your hands on it! Don't wave you arms about.

0:31:11 > 0:31:13We're in a massive boat, pulling a barge.

0:31:13 > 0:31:16How long would a journey take in this, typically?

0:31:16 > 0:31:19The average speed is seven miles an hour.

0:31:20 > 0:31:23With all the conditions that you run through,

0:31:23 > 0:31:25what you're actually doing is hard.

0:31:25 > 0:31:28- Where you're doing it is hard. - It's hard.- The weather - it's hot.

0:31:28 > 0:31:32- It's hot. Harsh conditions all the way around.- You're away from home.

0:31:32 > 0:31:34It's not for everybody, but some guys grew up round it,

0:31:34 > 0:31:37their father might have been in the oil field, grandfather.

0:31:37 > 0:31:40It's just kind of like the tug boat captains. They like what they know.

0:31:40 > 0:31:43I'm strictly a land-dweller. I'm not very good with the boats.

0:31:45 > 0:31:48Uh, yeah. Oh, God. I'm really nervous with boats.

0:31:51 > 0:31:53INDECIPHERABLE

0:31:58 > 0:32:01Well, I... You see, your accent, the speed and my nerves are not helping there.

0:32:01 > 0:32:05Put 'em in neutral, cos you got so much weight with the tug and barge, you got momentum.

0:32:05 > 0:32:07- One click, into neutral. - That's in neutral?- Yes.

0:32:07 > 0:32:09So when do we start slowing this thing?

0:32:09 > 0:32:12Once you get about 50 feet, we'll put one in reverse so...

0:32:12 > 0:32:15- Oh, that's about 50 feet now, isn't it, surely? Must be.- Nah.

0:32:15 > 0:32:17And that's a good 50. That's maybe 45.

0:32:17 > 0:32:18Oh, how much does this weigh?

0:32:18 > 0:32:20And it's worth a lot of money.

0:32:20 > 0:32:22Pop it back in neutral.

0:32:22 > 0:32:25- My man is going to catch it right there by the back corner. - Oh, I'm parking the big barge?

0:32:25 > 0:32:28He'll drop spuds. You can drop that spud when we get close.

0:32:28 > 0:32:30What's a spud and why is he dropping it?

0:32:30 > 0:32:33A spud, technically, is like an anchor.

0:32:33 > 0:32:35He looks really nervous cos he sees me up here, not you.

0:32:35 > 0:32:37He looks very unhappy about that.

0:32:38 > 0:32:42It's my last day here on the Gulf Coast of Louisiana,

0:32:42 > 0:32:46where I've challenged myself to learn to be a salvage man in just three days.

0:32:46 > 0:32:50I've trained on the salvage man's three main machines -

0:32:50 > 0:32:52the crane, the grapple and the electromagnet -

0:32:52 > 0:32:55but my final exam is rapidly approaching.

0:32:55 > 0:32:59I think I really am getting somewhere with the magnet and the grapple.

0:32:59 > 0:33:02And they are two essential bits of kit around here.

0:33:02 > 0:33:05And the guys have said I can have some time just on my own,

0:33:05 > 0:33:07just to practise and really learn.

0:33:07 > 0:33:11Both things are about lifting stuff, quite big stuff,

0:33:11 > 0:33:13and then manipulating it.

0:33:13 > 0:33:15So I need something quite big that I can really lift,

0:33:15 > 0:33:20grapple and grip...and get in there with, something quite big.

0:33:20 > 0:33:22Ah, I know!

0:33:27 > 0:33:29There we go! Now we're working.

0:33:29 > 0:33:31Since I'm not officially a salvage man yet,

0:33:31 > 0:33:35I've decided to practise on something beyond salvaging -

0:33:35 > 0:33:37a minivan.

0:33:37 > 0:33:41Now, the whole point with the magnet, as I discovered yesterday,

0:33:41 > 0:33:42is it is about precision.

0:33:42 > 0:33:45It's about picking up the stuff that you want,

0:33:45 > 0:33:47then placing it where you want it to be.

0:33:50 > 0:33:52Yeah, that's about right. Put that there.

0:33:52 > 0:33:56It's like learning to write. It's a really precise thing.

0:33:56 > 0:33:59Yeah, that's where I want it to be.

0:33:59 > 0:34:03Let's just try this finesse with something that's bigger.

0:34:05 > 0:34:07Ooh, ooh!

0:34:07 > 0:34:09Let's just practise this again.

0:34:13 > 0:34:14There you go.

0:34:14 > 0:34:16Let's try that.

0:34:19 > 0:34:20Oh, dear!

0:34:20 > 0:34:24See, it's just that precision, just putting it where you want it,

0:34:24 > 0:34:27when you want it there. Just slipped it in.

0:34:27 > 0:34:29Accuracy is all.

0:34:29 > 0:34:32And I think that's probably enough time with the magnet.

0:34:32 > 0:34:34I'm going to move on to the grappler.

0:34:36 > 0:34:39OK. Now, the critical thing with the grapple is,

0:34:39 > 0:34:42as I think I've learned, it really is a precision tool.

0:34:42 > 0:34:47I see no reason why I can't just...just tweak that windscreen wiper a little bit.

0:34:50 > 0:34:52Oh, come on!

0:34:52 > 0:34:55Not the windshield, I want the wiper!

0:34:55 > 0:34:58There! It's got to be in there somewhere.

0:34:58 > 0:35:00No, no, no.

0:35:00 > 0:35:02There.

0:35:02 > 0:35:03Is that the wiper?

0:35:03 > 0:35:05No, that's not the wiper.

0:35:07 > 0:35:10It just got it just like that and then just...

0:35:10 > 0:35:13Yeah, let's put it on its side.

0:35:13 > 0:35:15Yeah, that's better!

0:35:15 > 0:35:17Now, we can get at stuff.

0:35:17 > 0:35:18Oh, let go, let go.

0:35:18 > 0:35:21Give me the wheel. Give me the wheel. Ha!

0:35:21 > 0:35:23And, ah!

0:35:23 > 0:35:25Give me the wheel!

0:35:25 > 0:35:27I want the wheel! Give me the wheel!

0:35:27 > 0:35:30Give me the damn wheel!

0:35:30 > 0:35:33I, for one, am impressed. I don't know about you.

0:35:33 > 0:35:37Let's go for a bigger move altogether now.

0:35:37 > 0:35:39I am making a convertible.

0:35:41 > 0:35:44Oh, it's the roof. Look!

0:35:44 > 0:35:48Nobody's made a convertible minivan. Why not? Look, it's brilliant.

0:35:49 > 0:35:51Oh, that's a tough bit, isn't it?

0:35:56 > 0:35:57Yeah.

0:35:57 > 0:35:59This will catch on.

0:35:59 > 0:36:02Everyone's going to want one of these when I'm finished.

0:36:02 > 0:36:04And...mine! Oh, yeah!

0:36:10 > 0:36:12There it is.

0:36:15 > 0:36:20This will, I suspect, soon become an industry standard test for most car manufacturers.

0:36:22 > 0:36:24Do you know what? I think...

0:36:24 > 0:36:25CRACKS KNUCKLES

0:36:25 > 0:36:27..I'm ready.

0:36:27 > 0:36:30That's exactly what I needed, a bit of private study time.

0:36:30 > 0:36:31It does pay off.

0:36:31 > 0:36:33It's like exam cramming.

0:36:33 > 0:36:35I'm good to go.

0:36:37 > 0:36:39The beginning of day three,

0:36:39 > 0:36:42and I think I've kind of learned the basics so far.

0:36:42 > 0:36:44I did struggle a bit with the giant friction crane.

0:36:44 > 0:36:46That was hard.

0:36:46 > 0:36:50And I found this, the magnet, a lot more complicated than I expected.

0:36:50 > 0:36:55I think I got the hang of the grapple, even though Todd did beat me in the game of lawn bowling.

0:36:55 > 0:36:58You had to be there to understand what that's about.

0:36:58 > 0:37:01The thing is, I've got my final test ahead of me now.

0:37:01 > 0:37:04If I don't pass, I'll never be able to call myself a real salvage man.

0:37:04 > 0:37:07And I decided, just to make it a bit more challenging,

0:37:07 > 0:37:08I decided to make it rain.

0:37:08 > 0:37:11Yeah, I like a challenge. Spice it up a bit.

0:37:11 > 0:37:13I might as well be at home with this. I mean, look.

0:37:16 > 0:37:19Gentlemen, Trainee Hammond reporting for his final test.

0:37:19 > 0:37:23Right. So, it's 15 minutes and I've got to move stuff off the barge. What am I moving?

0:37:23 > 0:37:27You're going to move the minivan from earlier, as well as the refrigerators.

0:37:27 > 0:37:30- That's all the stuff I broke. - That is correct.- Yep.

0:37:30 > 0:37:33- What you've got me doing is tidying up my own mess.- That is correct.

0:37:33 > 0:37:35- OK.- You made a mess, now it's time to clean it.

0:37:35 > 0:37:38Oh, come on! It's not like there wasn't... OK, that's my mess.

0:37:38 > 0:37:42So, I've got to get all that off there on here, sort through it?

0:37:42 > 0:37:45- Correct.- Find the metal bits that are magnetic, separate those out.

0:37:45 > 0:37:47- Job done.- Correct.- 15 minutes.

0:37:47 > 0:37:49Don't start the timer until,

0:37:49 > 0:37:53until it makes its first turn towards the barge.

0:37:53 > 0:37:54That sounds fair?

0:37:56 > 0:37:57What, when the engine first starts?

0:37:57 > 0:37:59Yeah, you're burning fuel.

0:37:59 > 0:38:03I'm going to do it. I'm ready. You don't think I will, do you?

0:38:03 > 0:38:05- Give it hell.- Yeah, I'll give it hell. I will.

0:38:05 > 0:38:08- Good luck to you. - Jimmy's just going to sneak along.

0:38:08 > 0:38:11You won't even know he's there. You're with me. All right.

0:38:11 > 0:38:14Oh, the seat's wet! Oh!

0:38:14 > 0:38:15BELL RINGS

0:38:15 > 0:38:19Yeah. And then hit this? There we go, it's beginning.

0:38:19 > 0:38:21Right. Now, I'm looking for my hand signals.

0:38:21 > 0:38:23Let's see if I can remember them.

0:38:23 > 0:38:24So that's boom down.

0:38:26 > 0:38:29Moving down. There it goes.

0:38:29 > 0:38:32Waiting for the signal. More, more, more.

0:38:34 > 0:38:35Bang!

0:38:35 > 0:38:41They are brave men, when you consider I'm not necessarily the world's best operator on this thing.

0:38:41 > 0:38:44Right, so let's hoist, which is that.

0:38:46 > 0:38:49Lock your brake. Lock your brake.

0:38:49 > 0:38:51Oh, this is hard.

0:38:53 > 0:38:55Ohhh!

0:38:55 > 0:38:59He's only got one, he better do two at a time to make the time.

0:38:59 > 0:39:02OK. It's going up. It is going up.

0:39:02 > 0:39:04Coming up with the second lift.

0:39:04 > 0:39:06- Oh, coming up.- He needs to hurry.

0:39:06 > 0:39:10So another fridge joins my pile of stuff that I've broken.

0:39:10 > 0:39:13Richard, you're coming up on about five minutes,

0:39:13 > 0:39:16so you better pick it up a little bit, buddy.

0:39:16 > 0:39:19The whole fridge bowling thing seemed like a good idea at the time.

0:39:19 > 0:39:21I didn't know I'd have to tidy up!

0:39:21 > 0:39:24I'm not halfway through unloading it. I should have made less mess.

0:39:24 > 0:39:26It's a good game, though.

0:39:28 > 0:39:30The fridge is off the barge...

0:39:32 > 0:39:35METAL SCREECHING

0:39:35 > 0:39:36..and onto land,

0:39:36 > 0:39:40ready to be sorted by me in just a few moments using the next machine.

0:39:40 > 0:39:42Well, there goes number four.

0:39:43 > 0:39:45Down.

0:39:45 > 0:39:46Which is...

0:39:48 > 0:39:51One more bit and that's the minivan.

0:39:54 > 0:39:57Wahey! Sorry, guys.

0:39:57 > 0:39:58They're brave men.

0:39:58 > 0:40:01I wouldn't want to do the bit that they're doing here.

0:40:04 > 0:40:07Oh, I really have made a bit of a mess there.

0:40:07 > 0:40:10Oh, some of it's escaped a bit.

0:40:15 > 0:40:16HE LAUGHS

0:40:16 > 0:40:18Touchdown.

0:40:19 > 0:40:22Now, all he has to do is separate everything.

0:40:22 > 0:40:23Right. That, I believe,

0:40:23 > 0:40:26is everything on the bank that needs to be on the bank.

0:40:26 > 0:40:28I would say that, right now,

0:40:28 > 0:40:32this storm is turning into a proper tropical storm.

0:40:32 > 0:40:34And I'm in a massive metal-armed crane.

0:40:37 > 0:40:39Yeah, let's get a move on! Quicker than that!

0:40:39 > 0:40:42Oh, that was lightning. There was lightning then.

0:40:42 > 0:40:44It was lightning and it was close.

0:40:44 > 0:40:48Storm's getting worse. Nice touch, fellas. Right.

0:40:48 > 0:40:52So far, I've managed to unload the barge but I only have four minutes

0:40:52 > 0:40:55to use the magnet to separate the valuable recyclable materials.

0:40:55 > 0:40:58And then I still have to use the giant claw

0:40:58 > 0:41:02to move the refrigerators and minivan to their proper places.

0:41:02 > 0:41:04Four minutes to finish all of that.

0:41:04 > 0:41:08Oh, plus I'll be sitting at the wrong end of a giant lightning rod,

0:41:08 > 0:41:10during a thunderstorm, the whole time.

0:41:10 > 0:41:16Right. Well, I guess there's no point in going through the fridges.

0:41:16 > 0:41:18I know there's nothing to look for there.

0:41:18 > 0:41:20Going up to the car.

0:41:20 > 0:41:22What have we got?

0:41:22 > 0:41:25Sorry, car, I'm really making an even worse mess of you.

0:41:27 > 0:41:30Yeah, there's some more.

0:41:30 > 0:41:31There's a whole load of stuff. Look.

0:41:31 > 0:41:36OK. I reckon there's about the right place for my neat pile of...

0:41:36 > 0:41:38That's all my precious stuff.

0:41:38 > 0:41:41One more pass, I think, should do it.

0:41:41 > 0:41:46Just stroking it, really, to find out what's magnetic and what isn't.

0:41:48 > 0:41:50That's going to have to do.

0:41:50 > 0:41:53That is my pile of precious metal right there.

0:41:53 > 0:41:56Right. Now I'm going to change to the grab.

0:41:56 > 0:41:57THUNDERCLAP

0:41:57 > 0:42:00Two minutes to go. Time is against me.

0:42:00 > 0:42:05So, let's try to move these fridges all into a nice, big pile.

0:42:05 > 0:42:09Oh, oh, oh, stop that swinging.

0:42:09 > 0:42:13Yeah, that'll do. I got it, I got it, I got it. Gently does it.

0:42:13 > 0:42:17I'm out of lift on the boom, but it doesn't matter because...

0:42:19 > 0:42:21Ah, it's in the pile. That's neat enough.

0:42:21 > 0:42:24Let's see if I can reach that. Oh, yeah.

0:42:24 > 0:42:26It's mine.

0:42:26 > 0:42:28Oh, no! It's not mine.

0:42:28 > 0:42:31Oh, this is frustrating. Come on.

0:42:31 > 0:42:35There. There! I've got it. That's my fridge.

0:42:35 > 0:42:37That won't lift that way. And finally...

0:42:41 > 0:42:43There it is. That's a pile of fridges.

0:42:43 > 0:42:45Right. Now all I have to do is the car.

0:42:46 > 0:42:49OK. With a minute to go, one more thing,

0:42:49 > 0:42:51which is to pick the car up.

0:42:51 > 0:42:54Jimmy's backing the trailer in.

0:42:54 > 0:42:57I'm going to put the whole of this utterly ruined minivan -

0:42:57 > 0:43:01what a shame(!) - onto the trailer.

0:43:01 > 0:43:04So, I need to just get this lifted,

0:43:04 > 0:43:07without hitting their valuable trailer.

0:43:07 > 0:43:09OK. There we go.

0:43:09 > 0:43:12Oh, I can give that grip now.

0:43:12 > 0:43:13We should have that.

0:43:15 > 0:43:18There we go. It's mine, it's mine.

0:43:18 > 0:43:21OK. Jimmy's going to back the trailer in,

0:43:21 > 0:43:23I put the car on, and we are there.

0:43:23 > 0:43:25Oh, yeah!

0:43:28 > 0:43:30Going to turn, line it up the trailer.

0:43:30 > 0:43:33Oh, yeah. I reckon that's ready to go off to a dealer, to be honest.

0:43:33 > 0:43:36I know guys who can sell that.

0:43:40 > 0:43:42Ooh, ooh, ooh. No.

0:43:42 > 0:43:44I can't seem to let go of it.

0:43:44 > 0:43:46Yeah, I'll let go of it.

0:43:46 > 0:43:49We are done! That is it, my friends!

0:43:50 > 0:43:52And just park this machine.

0:43:52 > 0:43:54Oh, come on, come on!

0:43:54 > 0:43:56Stop the clock, stop the clock!

0:43:56 > 0:44:00I am done. That is me finished.

0:44:00 > 0:44:04I reckon... I make that in time. Just. And I mean only just.

0:44:04 > 0:44:06Ta-da! Come on, what did I do?

0:44:06 > 0:44:08I was just inside, wasn't I?

0:44:08 > 0:44:10Uh, yeah, 30 seconds.

0:44:10 > 0:44:12There you go. Come on.

0:44:12 > 0:44:16OK, it's not the neatest of piles and not all the metal came out,

0:44:16 > 0:44:18and I took a while with that crane.

0:44:18 > 0:44:20- The crane's hard.- Yeah.

0:44:20 > 0:44:22But overall, let's go through it just briefly.

0:44:22 > 0:44:25The crane - out of ten, what would you give me?

0:44:25 > 0:44:26I'd say a six.

0:44:26 > 0:44:28- Generous man.- I'd say it was a five.

0:44:28 > 0:44:31Yeah. I'm surprised I got that much out of you, to be honest.

0:44:31 > 0:44:35And on the magnet? I mean, there wasn't a lot to sift through. I didn't have a lot to find.

0:44:35 > 0:44:38Right. I'd say I'd give you a six again.

0:44:40 > 0:44:43Thank you. Thank you. Now, on to the grapple.

0:44:43 > 0:44:45- Come on, I got that. I like the grapple.- You like the grapple?

0:44:48 > 0:44:50Well, it's not easy, but I'm getting there.

0:44:50 > 0:44:52I'm all right with the grapple.

0:44:53 > 0:44:56OK. You had to be generous in the end. Well, guys, thank you very much...

0:44:56 > 0:44:59- Appreciate it, man.- ..for letting me use your machine.

0:44:59 > 0:45:01- I know you'll be busy with another load in a minute.- Correct.

0:45:01 > 0:45:04- Get out this mess.- I'll get out your way.- Have a good one.

0:45:09 > 0:45:13Well, I hesitate to say that I mastered the crane,

0:45:13 > 0:45:17the magnet and the grapple, but I got by. I got the job done.

0:45:17 > 0:45:20But I leave the salvage yard with something far more significant

0:45:20 > 0:45:23than that satisfaction, because I leave here knowing that...

0:45:23 > 0:45:25Look, she got well again!

0:45:26 > 0:45:30I suspect that old crane will be working long after

0:45:30 > 0:45:32I've been broken up for salvage myself.
