0:00:02 > 0:00:04Hi, I'm George Lewis. Welcome to Extra Gear.
0:00:04 > 0:00:06What a great show we have in store for you tonight.
0:00:06 > 0:00:08We show you how to keep up with a DB11
0:00:08 > 0:00:10screaming down the Dunsfold runway.
0:00:12 > 0:00:14We find out where Rory's love of the hatchback started.
0:00:14 > 0:00:18My first-ever car was in 1978 Fiesta.
0:00:18 > 0:00:21Sabine drops by to tell us how much she enjoyed
0:00:21 > 0:00:24scaring the crap out of Rory on the Green Hill.
0:00:24 > 0:00:26So much power.
0:00:26 > 0:00:30And Chris takes the driver's seat in our reasonably fast car
0:00:30 > 0:00:32and shows us what it can really do.
0:00:32 > 0:00:35That's right, this is Extra Gear.
0:00:35 > 0:00:37CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
0:00:58 > 0:01:02So, tonight may have featured secret agent Le Bond
0:01:02 > 0:01:05and the terrifyingly badly dressed Doctor No Hair,
0:01:05 > 0:01:08but the real star of the show was the DB11.
0:01:08 > 0:01:10With a top speed of 200mph,
0:01:10 > 0:01:13it's definitely more than just a pretty face.
0:01:13 > 0:01:15And it is a very pretty face.
0:01:15 > 0:01:19But when a car is travelling that fast, how do you film it?
0:01:26 > 0:01:30Hello, I'm Alex Renton, series editor of Top Gear.
0:01:30 > 0:01:34We've got our first day of the new series down at Dunsfold.
0:01:34 > 0:01:36It's good to be home.
0:01:36 > 0:01:40We're testing the Aston Martin DB11 with Matt LeBlanc.
0:01:40 > 0:01:43So, everyone's back, everyone's raring to go.
0:01:51 > 0:01:53The idea of the kit we've got here
0:01:53 > 0:01:56is just to track the fast DB11
0:01:56 > 0:01:58and try to get some very fast tracking shots.
0:01:58 > 0:02:00Normally, we have a cameraman
0:02:00 > 0:02:03in the back of the car, and when he's in the back of the car,
0:02:03 > 0:02:06we can only go quite slow speeds.
0:02:06 > 0:02:09And it doesn't show fast cars at their best.
0:02:10 > 0:02:13So, today we've got ourselves a nice fast car, this R8,
0:02:13 > 0:02:16and we've got a pan-and-tilt head with zoom capabilities
0:02:16 > 0:02:18on the front edge of this
0:02:18 > 0:02:21and a low-level to try and accentuate the speed.
0:02:21 > 0:02:23So, by using this rig,
0:02:23 > 0:02:26we can pan, tilt, zoom and focus as we're travelling.
0:02:26 > 0:02:29So the two cars can jockey for position
0:02:29 > 0:02:32and capture some very interesting high-speed shots.
0:03:17 > 0:03:19We got covered in a lot of rubber then.
0:03:20 > 0:03:23- Yeah, it was good fun, that.- Yeah.
0:03:23 > 0:03:24Cameras, cut.
0:03:25 > 0:03:27Now, let's bring on two men
0:03:27 > 0:03:30that are all too familiar with filming fast cars.
0:03:30 > 0:03:31It's Chris and Rory.
0:03:31 > 0:03:34CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
0:03:40 > 0:03:45I loved that film because you watch this amazing driving footage,
0:03:45 > 0:03:47but you don't really think about it, but obviously there's
0:03:47 > 0:03:52going to be another car that's got to go equally as fast to film it.
0:03:52 > 0:03:54- How clever you are.- Yes! I worked it out.
0:03:54 > 0:03:58But, the DB11, they used an R8.
0:03:58 > 0:04:00Why's that the car of choice, Chris?
0:04:00 > 0:04:03I think it's a very clever car because it's four-wheel drive.
0:04:03 > 0:04:06The Aston is two-wheel drive, so it's got a traction advantage,
0:04:06 > 0:04:08which means, when you're following close,
0:04:08 > 0:04:11you really need a faster car than the car you're following.
0:04:11 > 0:04:14Which is a big ask when you've got a 600 horsepower Aston Martin.
0:04:14 > 0:04:17So the car's got the performance, it's got the traction,
0:04:17 > 0:04:19its handling is fantastic, we know that.
0:04:19 > 0:04:21But of course the whole thing's pointless
0:04:21 > 0:04:24- unless you've got a great crew working with the car.- Yes.
0:04:24 > 0:04:28Yeah, you must have a specialist crew because there's so many things
0:04:28 > 0:04:30they've got to handle really delicately
0:04:30 > 0:04:32cos there's the speed, the distance, the presenters.
0:04:32 > 0:04:34Yeah, absolutely. We saw in the video
0:04:34 > 0:04:36that one of our mini-cam specialists,
0:04:36 > 0:04:38he has to spend so much time making sure
0:04:38 > 0:04:40everything is perfectly secured to the car,
0:04:40 > 0:04:43cos if you're going 180mph and something flies off,
0:04:43 > 0:04:45A, the camera is broken,
0:04:45 > 0:04:47and B, that turns into a high-speed projectile.
0:04:47 > 0:04:50You've got to factor in things like
0:04:50 > 0:04:52when they rig is on the front of the car,
0:04:52 > 0:04:55it becomes a longer car or a wider car,
0:04:55 > 0:04:56depending on how you mount it.
0:04:56 > 0:04:59Also, the aerodynamics of the car change as well.
0:04:59 > 0:05:02So if you're doing 180mph, you've got to factor in
0:05:02 > 0:05:06the difference in handling that that kit provides to the car.
0:05:06 > 0:05:08So they're tuned into it, they're dialled into it,
0:05:08 > 0:05:10they understand how the car is going to react.
0:05:10 > 0:05:13They understand how the star car driver is going to react
0:05:13 > 0:05:16- in every given situation.- When you get it right, it's a great feeling.
0:05:16 > 0:05:19Because it is quite high-risk stuff. And it's not CGI.
0:05:19 > 0:05:22When you watch the current films with computer generated stuff,
0:05:22 > 0:05:25I love the fact we go out there and do it properly and it looks better.
0:05:25 > 0:05:28Those shots, close cropped onto that Aston wheel, how good do they look?
0:05:28 > 0:05:29That's real.
0:05:29 > 0:05:33Bits of tyre flying off, that's really visceral, exciting stuff.
0:05:33 > 0:05:36The Aston looked amazing, and this is an important car.
0:05:36 > 0:05:39Aston Martin say that this is the most important car
0:05:39 > 0:05:41in their 100-year history.
0:05:41 > 0:05:42Do you agree with that?
0:05:42 > 0:05:47I think car companies always say that. Don't they always say that?
0:05:47 > 0:05:51The turbo engine, that's a big move. Are you for it?
0:05:51 > 0:05:53I think, for this application, this is a fast GT car,
0:05:53 > 0:05:55it's not an out-and-out sports car.
0:05:55 > 0:05:58So it's more of a cruiser than it is a kind of scalpel.
0:05:58 > 0:06:00So I think, for this, it works.
0:06:00 > 0:06:03It's got good torque, works well with the transmission, so I'm a fan.
0:06:03 > 0:06:06But we know it's only going one way, and it's turbo-charging all the way,
0:06:06 > 0:06:10which ultimately I think is a shame. But in this application, it works.
0:06:10 > 0:06:13- Story?- It's not a shame at all.
0:06:13 > 0:06:15Turbo-charging brings benefits.
0:06:15 > 0:06:19- There's no drawback to turbo-charging.- We're talking about engines, not your hairdryer.
0:06:19 > 0:06:22Turbo-charging only brings benefits, there's no drawbacks whatsoever.
0:06:22 > 0:06:24You start with a massive V12 engine,
0:06:24 > 0:06:28you add a couple of turbochargers to it, and suddenly, more power.
0:06:28 > 0:06:30Also you get the benefit of increased efficiency,
0:06:30 > 0:06:32so the car uses less petrol.
0:06:32 > 0:06:35Have you ever driven a naturally aspirated Aston?
0:06:35 > 0:06:37You watch the petrol needle and it just drops
0:06:37 > 0:06:39with every application of your right foot.
0:06:39 > 0:06:40Whereas with this thing...
0:06:40 > 0:06:43It drops with every application of your right foot.
0:06:43 > 0:06:46But slightly, slightly slower than it would normally.
0:06:46 > 0:06:48I'm going to ask you about a phrase you just said then.
0:06:48 > 0:06:50There are no downsides to turbo-charging.
0:06:50 > 0:06:53- Not if it's done right.- Anyone here disagree with Rory Reid?
0:06:53 > 0:06:56- Turbo lag.- Yes, you see? Turbo lag.
0:06:56 > 0:06:59Two turbos, one going off early, one going off late,
0:06:59 > 0:07:02- no turbo lag.- Going off?- Fact.
0:07:02 > 0:07:05It's the technical...description. Firing.
0:07:05 > 0:07:07Is that what they say?
0:07:07 > 0:07:10We saw you driving a Mercedes S63.
0:07:10 > 0:07:12And can I just say, by the way,
0:07:12 > 0:07:16what an amazing performance from Chris as the evil villain.
0:07:17 > 0:07:20It was the role he was born to play.
0:07:20 > 0:07:23Absolutely haunting. Oh, there it is.
0:07:23 > 0:07:26So, they hijacked me three hours before we went to shoot that.
0:07:26 > 0:07:28They said this is what you're wearing. I mean, look at it!
0:07:28 > 0:07:31It was made of material that was one worse than polyester.
0:07:31 > 0:07:34It would just remove skin from your neck.
0:07:34 > 0:07:38- The car, that Mercedes, is just fantastic.- Yeah.
0:07:38 > 0:07:41But what it doesn't do, the only thing it doesn't do,
0:07:41 > 0:07:45is it doesn't pander to the vanity of the marketplace.
0:07:45 > 0:07:47Because it doesn't have a badge, and actually,
0:07:47 > 0:07:50to the untrained eye, it looks like a C Class Coupe, doesn't it?
0:07:50 > 0:07:51Well, I think that's the problem.
0:07:51 > 0:07:54If you buy a car with 550-plus horsepower,
0:07:54 > 0:07:56you want people to know about it. Right?
0:07:56 > 0:08:00I love the idea of just smoking along and no-one really knowing
0:08:00 > 0:08:02until they see it go boom past them.
0:08:02 > 0:08:04There's one thing you haven't mentioned,
0:08:04 > 0:08:07which is the headlights, the Swarovski crystals.
0:08:07 > 0:08:09Did you ever find out what they were for?
0:08:09 > 0:08:12No. Absolutely no idea.
0:08:12 > 0:08:15- I did.- Can you enlighten me? - Yes.- Go on.
0:08:15 > 0:08:20According to Mercedes, it's to provide striking visual highlights
0:08:20 > 0:08:23and emphasise the unique nature of the vehicle.
0:08:23 > 0:08:27- What? So they do nothing.- Obviously. - They do nothing.
0:08:27 > 0:08:31Chris, I think you've got a little treat for us, haven't you?
0:08:31 > 0:08:32I do indeed, George.
0:08:32 > 0:08:35So far in this series, you've seen eight celebrities
0:08:35 > 0:08:37get behind the wheel of our reasonably fast car.
0:08:37 > 0:08:39Even with the traction control on,
0:08:39 > 0:08:42the GT86 is a twitchy little number.
0:08:42 > 0:08:44This week, it's my turn to get behind the wheel.
0:08:44 > 0:08:47But this time with the traction control turned off.
0:08:51 > 0:08:55This thing's only got 200 horsepower, weighs 1,250 kilograms,
0:08:55 > 0:08:56so the numbers aren't massive.
0:08:56 > 0:08:59But the rear tyres are straight off a Prius.
0:08:59 > 0:09:00So it's got very little grip.
0:09:00 > 0:09:02It's been designed to be a bit unruly,
0:09:02 > 0:09:05that's why it's the perfect car for our celebs.
0:09:05 > 0:09:08So if I turn in here now, I'm already...
0:09:08 > 0:09:10look, we're sliding already.
0:09:10 > 0:09:12God, that's a nice feeling!
0:09:12 > 0:09:14But I have to say, it's a real challenge
0:09:14 > 0:09:18because you have to balance the throttle quite accurately.
0:09:18 > 0:09:19I think it's a wonderful car.
0:09:19 > 0:09:22Because you can get on the gas early like that
0:09:22 > 0:09:24and then just ride it all the way out.
0:09:25 > 0:09:29But they use the traction control quite heavily there.
0:09:29 > 0:09:30In fact, being honest,
0:09:30 > 0:09:34they use the traction control everywhere cos they're leadfoots.
0:09:34 > 0:09:38All of them are quite fearless. Look at the Hammerhead now, here we go.
0:09:38 > 0:09:41If I gas it here, already we're fully, fully...
0:09:41 > 0:09:43TYRE SCREECH DROWNS SPEECH
0:09:43 > 0:09:46Much, much more difficult than a cee-d or something like that.
0:09:46 > 0:09:50Yeah, James McAvoy was quite lairy through there.
0:09:50 > 0:09:54And through this right-hander, he was, I have to say, quite fearless.
0:09:54 > 0:09:55Oh-ho-ho!
0:09:55 > 0:09:5995mph drift. Probably a bit much for our guests.
0:10:00 > 0:10:03The follow-through, even safe, pretty much flat out.
0:10:03 > 0:10:06Let the car right out to the outside
0:10:06 > 0:10:08and then just trail-brake it in.
0:10:08 > 0:10:10David Tennant nearly...
0:10:10 > 0:10:13He was a worried boy.
0:10:13 > 0:10:15But then you hit this really slippery tarmac
0:10:15 > 0:10:17on that last corner, Gambon.
0:10:17 > 0:10:19Gambon.
0:10:19 > 0:10:21Oh, that was quite lairy!
0:10:24 > 0:10:26- Scary? - Now, on account of me liking living,
0:10:26 > 0:10:30- traction control will stay on for all the guests from now on.- Yes.
0:10:30 > 0:10:33Now, Rory, when people see you and I together, they think,
0:10:33 > 0:10:36these guys have probably got nothing in common.
0:10:36 > 0:10:39One's cool, stylish, great at driving.
0:10:39 > 0:10:40And the other is Rory Reid.
0:10:40 > 0:10:42LAUGHTER
0:10:42 > 0:10:44As it turns out, we're not that different.
0:10:47 > 0:10:50This is the Ford Fiesta ST200.
0:10:50 > 0:10:52It will do 142mph,
0:10:52 > 0:10:550 to 60 in 6.7 seconds,
0:10:55 > 0:10:59and that makes it the fastest Fiesta ever made.
0:11:06 > 0:11:09Look, it's no secret that I'm partial to a hot hatch.
0:11:12 > 0:11:14Come on!
0:11:14 > 0:11:18But there's a special place in my heart for the Ford Fiesta.
0:11:18 > 0:11:22My first-ever car was a 1978 Fiesta.
0:11:22 > 0:11:27'Introducing Fiesta. Now imported from Germany by Ford.'
0:11:27 > 0:11:31It was the mid-'90s and it was a crucial time for the hatchback.
0:11:31 > 0:11:34Back then, these cars didn't roll off the production line
0:11:34 > 0:11:38with 17-inch alloys, Recaro seats and mad body kits,
0:11:38 > 0:11:42they were affordable and begging to be tweaked.
0:11:42 > 0:11:45Back then was the dawn of the modified car scene.
0:11:45 > 0:11:47And I was hooked.
0:11:54 > 0:11:56I started going to cruises,
0:11:56 > 0:12:00which were clandestine gatherings in empty lots or car parks
0:12:00 > 0:12:04where people would gather to show off their modified cars.
0:12:07 > 0:12:09And this wasn't just in South London,
0:12:09 > 0:12:11it was happening all over the country,
0:12:11 > 0:12:15including in Stockport, where a young George Lewis
0:12:15 > 0:12:19was pottering around in his own majestic Fiesta.
0:12:19 > 0:12:21I certainly was, Rory.
0:12:21 > 0:12:23- Hello.- Hiya, mate.
0:12:23 > 0:12:25So what made yours so special?
0:12:25 > 0:12:29Mine was a '95 Fiesta, third generation,
0:12:29 > 0:12:32and I got it for 100 quid off my mate Dougie.
0:12:32 > 0:12:35But then I had to spend the money on the mods as well,
0:12:35 > 0:12:39- so that was another 50 quid. - OK. 50 quid's worth of mods?
0:12:39 > 0:12:43- Oh, yes.- So you had some special stuff on there then, clearly.
0:12:43 > 0:12:46Er, yeah, I had stick-on vents on the bonnet.
0:12:46 > 0:12:49I also had a flashing blue gear stick.
0:12:49 > 0:12:52- So, just stuff that would make me go faster, really.- Right.
0:12:52 > 0:12:54I've never, ever heard of a flashing gear stick
0:12:54 > 0:12:56- helping anyone change gear faster. - I thought you were into cars, mate.
0:12:56 > 0:12:59Well, clearly you know more than I do.
0:12:59 > 0:13:02Did you find yourself going to cruises?
0:13:02 > 0:13:06I went to cruises, but I found them pretty scary places.
0:13:06 > 0:13:09You know, you turn up and there'd be an air of menace.
0:13:09 > 0:13:12I'd always be worried the police were going to turn up
0:13:12 > 0:13:15and for some reason they'd arrest me.
0:13:15 > 0:13:16THEY LAUGH
0:13:16 > 0:13:19The guy with the flashing blue knob, he's gone too far.
0:13:19 > 0:13:21Nowadays, kids have it so easy.
0:13:21 > 0:13:25You can kind of perv on your favourite car using the internet.
0:13:25 > 0:13:28- Right, yeah.- But that then, to find a car you really lusted after,
0:13:28 > 0:13:30- you'd have to go and see it.- Yes.
0:13:30 > 0:13:34- But are there still cruises then, do they still exist?- I think they do.
0:13:34 > 0:13:35I think they're out there,
0:13:35 > 0:13:38you just have to look really hard to find them.
0:13:38 > 0:13:41- I know a guy who used to write for Max Power magazine.- Oh, yeah.
0:13:41 > 0:13:44His name's Dan and he said that there was
0:13:44 > 0:13:48a semblance of a cruise happening not too far from here, actually.
0:13:48 > 0:13:51- So, if you want to go and check one out?- Yeah.- We can.- OK.
0:13:51 > 0:13:54- I'm up for it.- Cool, let's go and check one out.
0:13:55 > 0:13:59We're off to the Ace Cafe, which at the height of the cruise scene,
0:13:59 > 0:14:03was the ultimate hang-out for car enthusiasts and boy racers.
0:14:05 > 0:14:06I wonder what it's like today.
0:14:13 > 0:14:16- Here we are.- Yep. - Where are all the Novas?
0:14:18 > 0:14:21Everything's a bit less bright blue than I remember.
0:14:21 > 0:14:24- Right, Dan, we're looking for Dan. - Let's go and find him.
0:14:31 > 0:14:35Dan Anslow is a former feature writer and photographer
0:14:35 > 0:14:36for car mag Max Power.
0:14:36 > 0:14:39In its heyday, it was the go-to resource
0:14:39 > 0:14:41for performance tuning and modification.
0:14:41 > 0:14:46Dan himself was a boy racer who got himself up to all kinds of mischief.
0:14:46 > 0:14:47Today, he's a little different.
0:14:47 > 0:14:49All right, chaps?
0:14:49 > 0:14:53- Dan.- Rory.- Hello, fella. Long time, no see.- I know, mate, too long.
0:14:53 > 0:14:56- This is George.- Hi, Dan, good to meet you.- Nice to meet you. All right?
0:14:56 > 0:14:58What are you rolling in today? A little Nissan?
0:14:58 > 0:15:01- Popped down in the R32 GTR. - Nice, nice.
0:15:01 > 0:15:02It's my weapon of choice tonight.
0:15:02 > 0:15:05You've got a classic blue on gold colour scheme going on.
0:15:05 > 0:15:06Yeah, she's nice, she's pretty.
0:15:06 > 0:15:08But she's not that wild, bit like tonight, really.
0:15:08 > 0:15:13Speaking of which, it's been 20-odd years since the cruise scene
0:15:13 > 0:15:16was at its peak, and this is what it's become.
0:15:16 > 0:15:19Yeah, well, I guess last time I was at the Ace Cafe
0:15:19 > 0:15:22having a full-on cruise was about ten years ago.
0:15:22 > 0:15:24Thousands of people here, cars everywhere,
0:15:24 > 0:15:28smoke from burn-outs, doughnuts, flames out of exhausts.
0:15:28 > 0:15:30It was wild, yeah, it was totally wild, it was the Wild West,
0:15:30 > 0:15:33- it really was.- It all seems a bit tamer now, doesn't it?
0:15:33 > 0:15:37Yeah, it's quiet tonight, it's sanctioned, it's nicely organised.
0:15:37 > 0:15:39I quite like this, that it's nice and welcoming now.
0:15:39 > 0:15:42It's like a family day out, you know what I mean?
0:15:42 > 0:15:44I think the guys have got a really good selection of cars out.
0:15:44 > 0:15:46You've got some real enthusiasts.
0:15:46 > 0:15:48I saw something quite nice as I drove in,
0:15:48 > 0:15:50it was a Sierra RS Cosworth over there.
0:15:50 > 0:15:53Yeah, nice, a classic cruise-mobile, that is, mate.
0:15:53 > 0:15:55That was a unicorn for me. Shall we go and have a look?
0:15:55 > 0:15:57- Yeah, let's go.- Let's do it, man.
0:16:05 > 0:16:07Mick, Rory. Nice to meet you.
0:16:07 > 0:16:11I remember back in the day rocking up to cruises in my Fiesta
0:16:11 > 0:16:15or Astra and seeing these things, and these were the daddies, man.
0:16:15 > 0:16:17Fair play. How long have you had this thing?
0:16:17 > 0:16:20About seven years. Bought it off a friend.
0:16:20 > 0:16:22Basically, he had five kids.
0:16:22 > 0:16:26So it was time for the car to go.
0:16:26 > 0:16:27What does he drive now?
0:16:27 > 0:16:29A Land Rover.
0:16:31 > 0:16:33It happens to us all, mate.
0:16:33 > 0:16:35And do you think these things have changed quite a lot?
0:16:35 > 0:16:37- Have cruises changed?- Definitely.
0:16:37 > 0:16:40I used to come up especially.
0:16:40 > 0:16:43People were going mad outside here with this many cars.
0:16:43 > 0:16:46- There's not enough smoke, is there? - Well, this is it.
0:16:48 > 0:16:50It's a slightly different affair today,
0:16:50 > 0:16:53but it's nice to see the love of the mod hasn't changed.
0:16:53 > 0:16:56Look, he's got the classic neons going on.
0:16:56 > 0:17:00Yeah, this is what I remember, brightly coloured neon lights.
0:17:00 > 0:17:01'It wouldn't be a cruise
0:17:01 > 0:17:05'without a ridiculously over-the-top sound system.
0:17:05 > 0:17:06'Now, this takes me back.'
0:17:06 > 0:17:11- You've got one or two speakers in it now, I see.- I have 68.- 68?- Yeah.
0:17:11 > 0:17:14- I love the way you snuck in speakers in the footwell.- Yeah.
0:17:14 > 0:17:18But there's literally nowhere in this car that hasn't got a speaker.
0:17:18 > 0:17:20It looks the part, can we hear it?
0:17:20 > 0:17:23- Of course, no problem. - All right, fire it up.- OK.
0:17:23 > 0:17:26MUSIC BLARES
0:17:29 > 0:17:31Yeah, quite loud, isn't it?
0:17:31 > 0:17:34BASS THUMPS
0:17:35 > 0:17:38We never got stuff like this back in the day, did we?
0:17:38 > 0:17:41- No way, look at this thing. - Looks like it probably cost more than Fiesta.
0:17:43 > 0:17:48Back in the day, I had a Vauxhall Nova, an old 1.2 P reg Nova,
0:17:48 > 0:17:51and back then it was very different because you'd actually
0:17:51 > 0:17:53have to work for it. You would modify things at home.
0:17:53 > 0:17:56You'd get your friends to help you and it was a bit more communal,
0:17:56 > 0:17:59whereas now people build stuff like this,
0:17:59 > 0:18:01it's a completely different level.
0:18:01 > 0:18:05Everything kind of rolls off the production line ready for you.
0:18:05 > 0:18:08There's not much individuality any more.
0:18:08 > 0:18:11It's a bit different now because manufacturers have changed things,
0:18:11 > 0:18:13so everything's electronic, you can't necessarily put
0:18:13 > 0:18:16a different engine from one car into another car.
0:18:16 > 0:18:18It's very difficult to modify cars now.
0:18:18 > 0:18:20I think a lot of people still want to do it,
0:18:20 > 0:18:22but it's not organic like it used to be.
0:18:22 > 0:18:24You know, it's not quite the same.
0:18:24 > 0:18:26But I think the community is still the same.
0:18:32 > 0:18:34Are cruises smaller now, just fewer people there?
0:18:34 > 0:18:37Yeah, they're smaller, they're fragmented out.
0:18:37 > 0:18:39You've got guys who love performance,
0:18:39 > 0:18:41you got guys that love just styling only,
0:18:41 > 0:18:44you've got guys who love Japanese cars, European cars, and I think
0:18:44 > 0:18:47what they've done is more split out into their own little scenes.
0:18:47 > 0:18:49They don't do anything crazy, but they just get together,
0:18:49 > 0:18:51have a cup of tea and talk about their cars.
0:18:51 > 0:18:53But there's none of the associated madness.
0:18:53 > 0:18:56- It's a lot less dangerous now then. - Yeah, it's a lot less chance
0:18:56 > 0:19:00of getting run over now than there was back in the day.
0:19:01 > 0:19:03Do you know what this is missing, lads?
0:19:03 > 0:19:07I reckon we should find an old car park and do handbrake turns.
0:19:07 > 0:19:09- I'm well up for that.- Yeah?
0:19:09 > 0:19:12Er, yeah, it's 9.30pm, though, we've got work in the morning, so...
0:19:12 > 0:19:14Yeah, come on.
0:19:14 > 0:19:18APPLAUSE
0:19:18 > 0:19:20That was fun.
0:19:20 > 0:19:23I mean, I wasn't worried about getting arrested this time
0:19:23 > 0:19:26and we were back home in bed by 10pm.
0:19:26 > 0:19:28Not together!
0:19:28 > 0:19:29Yeah, yeah.
0:19:29 > 0:19:34Chris, you are a more distinguished gentleman than me and Rory.
0:19:34 > 0:19:36I mean you're a little bit older.
0:19:36 > 0:19:41Were you ever into modding your cars, ever had a flaming exhaust?
0:19:41 > 0:19:45Yeah, I think anyone who loves cars tweaks them and plays with them.
0:19:45 > 0:19:47And when you start out, you have to.
0:19:47 > 0:19:51So everything I owned for the first five or six years was, yeah,
0:19:51 > 0:19:53played with and mostly ruined.
0:19:53 > 0:19:55- What was your first car? - Mini. 998 Mini. Yeah, it had to be.
0:19:55 > 0:19:581.5in SU, Janspeed exhaust, took the interior out
0:19:58 > 0:20:01and drove it like an absolute knob.
0:20:01 > 0:20:03Yes. I expect no less.
0:20:03 > 0:20:06It's been a good night for the hatchback.
0:20:06 > 0:20:10Rory, we saw you in the GTI Club Sport S
0:20:10 > 0:20:13- on the Nurburgring with Sabine. - Oh, yeah.
0:20:13 > 0:20:16That's a worrying combination.
0:20:16 > 0:20:18And you are a very brave man.
0:20:18 > 0:20:21OK, OK.
0:20:21 > 0:20:23OK, now I'm scared.
0:20:23 > 0:20:26Aaaargh!
0:20:26 > 0:20:28- Oh, my...!- Don't worry.
0:20:29 > 0:20:30Aaargh!
0:20:31 > 0:20:33OK...
0:20:33 > 0:20:34I'm not OK.
0:20:34 > 0:20:36APPLAUSE
0:20:36 > 0:20:38I said "very brave".
0:20:38 > 0:20:40- Bravish.- Yeah, yeah.
0:20:40 > 0:20:43Well, now, let's bring out the woman
0:20:43 > 0:20:45who is responsible for Rory's night terrors.
0:20:45 > 0:20:46It's Sabine.
0:20:54 > 0:20:55There, there.
0:20:55 > 0:20:58Right, take a seat.
0:20:59 > 0:21:02Sabine, that looked like it was a very fun day for you and Rory.
0:21:02 > 0:21:07- Mainly you.- I enjoyed it quite much. I don't know. You?
0:21:07 > 0:21:10I'm alive, so I enjoyed it.
0:21:11 > 0:21:14- This was Rory's first time on the Ring.- Yeah, imagine.
0:21:14 > 0:21:18How did it feel when he arrived? Did he looked nervous?
0:21:18 > 0:21:21Not at all. I thought maybe he did some practice,
0:21:21 > 0:21:24you know, on a computer game or whatever.
0:21:25 > 0:21:29Literally, it was my first-ever time going around the Nurburgring
0:21:29 > 0:21:30and then you get in the car with her,
0:21:30 > 0:21:33- it's the most terrifying thing, I promise you.- He loved it.
0:21:33 > 0:21:36Cos you're watching it as a driver in your own head thinking,
0:21:36 > 0:21:39I should brake there, but she brakes 50 yards further down the road.
0:21:39 > 0:21:42You think, you can't possibly accelerate round this bend,
0:21:42 > 0:21:46but she's got her foot to the floor, she is the queen of the Nurburgring
0:21:46 > 0:21:48and she is quite frankly one of the best drivers
0:21:48 > 0:21:50I've sat next to a car, she's unbelievable.
0:21:50 > 0:21:53You did have that nervous laugh - I'm about to die!
0:21:53 > 0:21:58Listen, that's all genuine, I had actual nightmares after that.
0:21:58 > 0:22:01You must have your own specific bits of the track
0:22:01 > 0:22:03that are your favourites?
0:22:03 > 0:22:06- Oh, I like the fast parts.- OK.
0:22:07 > 0:22:08That's all of them.
0:22:08 > 0:22:12Yeah! There are some tiny corners.
0:22:12 > 0:22:14But I don't like the tiny ones,
0:22:14 > 0:22:18I like to have a good settled car on that really high-speed area.
0:22:18 > 0:22:21- With bumps and jumps and so on. - Yeah.
0:22:21 > 0:22:24I have to say, dude, you're a very brave man
0:22:24 > 0:22:26because if I had to write down on a piece of paper
0:22:26 > 0:22:29the worst way to be introduced to that circuit,
0:22:29 > 0:22:33it involved her, a quiet track, a hatchback that you know
0:22:33 > 0:22:36she's going to get on top of in about two seconds flat
0:22:36 > 0:22:39and drive really, really fast and have massive confidence in.
0:22:39 > 0:22:42- Yeah, I feel for you. - I think we're making progress here.
0:22:42 > 0:22:43Hug? Nah!
0:22:43 > 0:22:45So, the Golf is obviously a hatchback,
0:22:45 > 0:22:48but the Club Sport S is pretty much a sports car.
0:22:48 > 0:22:50Interesting geek fact for you.
0:22:50 > 0:22:55The guy that worked on the chassis and suspension for the 997 GT3 RS
0:22:55 > 0:22:57left Porsche and went to Volkswagen.
0:22:57 > 0:23:00And his next job was to do that car.
0:23:00 > 0:23:02- So their DNA is linked, basically. - Oh, OK.
0:23:02 > 0:23:05But this car has some serious engineering in it.
0:23:05 > 0:23:08The only thing is, when you exit a corner,
0:23:08 > 0:23:11the inside wheel is spinning a lot,
0:23:11 > 0:23:14so you could really make a big improvement on the time
0:23:14 > 0:23:16when this wouldn't happen.
0:23:16 > 0:23:19- So you think that could be faster if they change a few things?- Yeah.
0:23:19 > 0:23:21They have done some great work though.
0:23:21 > 0:23:23It doesn't understeer at all.
0:23:23 > 0:23:27You were throwing it into corners at stupid speeds. Just hanging on.
0:23:27 > 0:23:28It's a work of art, that thing.
0:23:28 > 0:23:30Well, that's all we have time for.
0:23:30 > 0:23:33So, can we have a round of applause, please, for Sabine?
0:23:33 > 0:23:36CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
0:23:39 > 0:23:41Rory, what have we got coming up next week?
0:23:41 > 0:23:45We'll get the inside track on the astonishing new Bugatti Chiron
0:23:45 > 0:23:48and if you've ever wondered how to build a life-size arcade game,
0:23:48 > 0:23:50make sure you tune in.
0:23:50 > 0:23:53We'll see you next week for more Extra Gear. Goodnight.
