0:00:02 > 0:00:03Hi, I'm George Lewis, and welcome to Extra Gear.

0:00:03 > 0:00:05We've got such a great show for you tonight.

0:00:05 > 0:00:08'Rory and I go off-roading, European style.'

0:00:08 > 0:00:09It's leaking!

0:00:09 > 0:00:10My old Ford Escort did this.

0:00:12 > 0:00:14'Chris climbs back into his Ultra4

0:00:14 > 0:00:17'to tackle our slightly less vertical Dunsfold test track.'

0:00:17 > 0:00:19This is wonderfully absurd!

0:00:20 > 0:00:23'And Eddie and Sabine join us to talk King of the Hammers.'

0:00:23 > 0:00:24Come on!

0:00:24 > 0:00:26Can we go a bit quicker, man?

0:00:26 > 0:00:28This is Extra Gear.

0:00:28 > 0:00:30APPLAUSE

0:00:48 > 0:00:52APPLAUSE

0:00:52 > 0:00:53On tonight's Top Gear,

0:00:53 > 0:00:55we saw Chris and Sabine off-road across

0:00:55 > 0:00:58an unforgiving expanse of desert in California.

0:00:58 > 0:01:01When Rory and I went off-roading, we had a slightly different experience.

0:01:03 > 0:01:07This is Parkwood Off-Road Centre just outside Bradford,

0:01:07 > 0:01:09known to those in the off-road scene as Tong.

0:01:12 > 0:01:16A sprawling 200 acre maze of dirt tracks, hill climbs,

0:01:16 > 0:01:19woods, water and mud.

0:01:19 > 0:01:21Lots and lots of mud.

0:01:24 > 0:01:25This is the Milner R5,

0:01:25 > 0:01:27and like the Ultra4,

0:01:27 > 0:01:32it packs a custom-made four-wheel-drive 500hp V8 punch.

0:01:32 > 0:01:34Granted, its five litre Coyote engine

0:01:34 > 0:01:37is smaller than the Ultra4, but so is the Milner,

0:01:37 > 0:01:39weighing in at almost a tonne less.

0:01:39 > 0:01:41That means it's little and it's quick,

0:01:41 > 0:01:43110mph quick.

0:01:43 > 0:01:45This thing's been around since the mid '80s,

0:01:45 > 0:01:48and it's still very much a major player at events

0:01:48 > 0:01:51like the Northern Off-Road Championship.

0:01:51 > 0:01:53Events take place over two days

0:01:53 > 0:01:55with competitors doing around 12 laps,

0:01:55 > 0:01:58and each lap lasting around six miles,

0:01:58 > 0:02:01the winner being the person with the lowest aggregate time.

0:02:01 > 0:02:03It's not exactly King of the Hammers,

0:02:03 > 0:02:05but it's gritty and it's fast,

0:02:05 > 0:02:07and that's what off-roading is all about.

0:02:07 > 0:02:10So beyond those trees, we've laid on a mile long circuit

0:02:10 > 0:02:12with some tricky technical terrain,

0:02:12 > 0:02:13a hairpin,

0:02:13 > 0:02:15and even a water splash.

0:02:15 > 0:02:18Today, my competitor and I will complete five laps.

0:02:18 > 0:02:20The driver with the lowest total time

0:02:20 > 0:02:22will then be crowned the winner.

0:02:22 > 0:02:25All I need now is some worthy opposition.

0:02:33 > 0:02:35# What are you doing here?! #

0:02:35 > 0:02:37- Hiya!- I said worthy.

0:02:37 > 0:02:38HE CHUCKLES

0:02:38 > 0:02:40- Good to see you, mate.- Yeah.

0:02:40 > 0:02:42Have you ever done any off-roading before?

0:02:42 > 0:02:43I've done a little bit of go-karting.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46I've been told that my slender physique is perfect

0:02:46 > 0:02:47for this type of thing,

0:02:47 > 0:02:49so you might say I was born to do it.

0:02:49 > 0:02:52Well, I think I might have the edge on you in experience,

0:02:52 > 0:02:54but I'm no expert by any means,

0:02:54 > 0:02:58but I have laid on some tutelage, shall we say?

0:02:58 > 0:03:00- You ready for this? - Let's do it.- Right.

0:03:01 > 0:03:02This is Jim Marsden,

0:03:02 > 0:03:05one of only two British drivers to have ever competed

0:03:05 > 0:03:07in The King of the Hammers.

0:03:07 > 0:03:09Known as THE rock crawling specialist,

0:03:09 > 0:03:11he's currently on the hunt for

0:03:11 > 0:03:14the European Ultra4 championship title.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19Rob Butler is the only other British driver

0:03:19 > 0:03:21to have ever competed in The King of the Hammers.

0:03:21 > 0:03:25In 2016, he became the first-ever European driver

0:03:25 > 0:03:28to complete the gruelling race in a European built Ultra4.

0:03:30 > 0:03:34Right, you're the expert. What I need to do to win?

0:03:34 > 0:03:35OK, Rory, welcome.

0:03:35 > 0:03:38What we've got to remember is that we've only got four pieces of rubber

0:03:38 > 0:03:40the size of my hand touching the ground at any one time.

0:03:40 > 0:03:42And we've got to keep those on the ground at all times.

0:03:42 > 0:03:44So nicely into the corners, a little bit of brake,

0:03:44 > 0:03:45get our speed right,

0:03:45 > 0:03:48and then drive out of the bends is what we need to do.

0:03:48 > 0:03:49Sounds straightforward.

0:03:49 > 0:03:51But she's fragile, OK?

0:03:51 > 0:03:53If we go really aggressive, we...

0:03:53 > 0:03:54Potentially, we can break her.

0:03:54 > 0:03:58And I guess the biggest thing of all is don't die?

0:03:58 > 0:04:01Don't die is really high on my list of things to do today.

0:04:01 > 0:04:03- OK, I'll keep that in mind. - JIM CHUCKLES

0:04:03 > 0:04:05- You ready?- Let's do this, my friend. - All right, let's do it.

0:04:05 > 0:04:08And with that, it was time for our sighting lap.

0:04:08 > 0:04:09Go us!

0:04:09 > 0:04:12All right, don't stand on the wheels. Beautiful.

0:04:12 > 0:04:14That's it, into it.

0:04:15 > 0:04:16Down the gears.

0:04:19 > 0:04:21Round the corner, nice and gentle.

0:04:21 > 0:04:22Steady, steady, steady.

0:04:22 > 0:04:23Wahey, that's it.

0:04:23 > 0:04:24Well done.

0:04:24 > 0:04:26Second gear, down one.

0:04:27 > 0:04:29Down a gear, down a gear.

0:04:30 > 0:04:31That's your lot.

0:04:31 > 0:04:33Down, down, down, down...

0:04:33 > 0:04:35- Felt good? - That was- BLEEP- wicked!

0:04:35 > 0:04:37THEY LAUGH

0:04:37 > 0:04:38Good skills there, mate.

0:04:38 > 0:04:40- OK, you happy with it?- Yeah, yeah.

0:04:40 > 0:04:42I was brimming with confidence.

0:04:42 > 0:04:44George, however, not so much.

0:04:44 > 0:04:48So, this might surprise you, Rob, I'm new to this.

0:04:48 > 0:04:50- Yeah? - THEY LAUGH

0:04:50 > 0:04:53What are the things that I need to consider when I'm driving around?

0:04:53 > 0:04:56It's not a bad idea to visualise ahead.

0:04:56 > 0:04:57- Yeah.- In the track.

0:04:57 > 0:05:00Always visualising what's lying ahead.

0:05:00 > 0:05:01Rory Reid's crying face.

0:05:01 > 0:05:03HE LAUGHS

0:05:03 > 0:05:04- Shall we go?- Suck it and see.

0:05:04 > 0:05:06- Let's go.- Oh, God! - Let's go.- Here we go!

0:05:10 > 0:05:13- Bloody hell, the steering's really hard.- Yes.

0:05:13 > 0:05:15You could do with something under your arse to lift you up

0:05:15 > 0:05:17a bit, really. I can see the...

0:05:17 > 0:05:18Your steering wheel's like that.

0:05:18 > 0:05:20I think I need a baby seat.

0:05:20 > 0:05:22A bit of speed, third gear.

0:05:23 > 0:05:25- Go to the left of that barrel.- Yeah.

0:05:25 > 0:05:27Watch out for the barrel!

0:05:28 > 0:05:29- Down to first gear.- Right there.

0:05:30 > 0:05:32- Oh, first gear. - Keep going, that's it.

0:05:32 > 0:05:34- Full lock, full lock... - God, this is to hard to turn!

0:05:36 > 0:05:37- Are we done?- You got it, got it.

0:05:37 > 0:05:39Now straight up. Quick, quick.

0:05:39 > 0:05:41Go, go, go, go. You're good. Second gear.

0:05:41 > 0:05:43My arms are going to be huge after this!

0:05:44 > 0:05:46Through the water!

0:05:46 > 0:05:48- Are you on the wipers, Rob?- Yes!

0:05:48 > 0:05:51Wiper man! Oh, it's leaking!

0:05:51 > 0:05:54My old Ford Escort did this.

0:05:54 > 0:05:55HE SQUEALS

0:05:55 > 0:05:57I'm coming to get you, Rory Reid.

0:05:57 > 0:05:59THEY LAUGH

0:06:00 > 0:06:02With George and I familiar with the car, and the circuit,

0:06:02 > 0:06:05it was time to go up against the clock.

0:06:05 > 0:06:06- ENGINE REVS - Here we go.

0:06:08 > 0:06:09Very nice.

0:06:11 > 0:06:12Nice control.

0:06:14 > 0:06:16OK, nice and steady.

0:06:16 > 0:06:18Downshift, set yourself at the corner.

0:06:18 > 0:06:20Faster. Much better.

0:06:27 > 0:06:29Nice.

0:06:29 > 0:06:30Set yourself for this off-camber.

0:06:34 > 0:06:35Beautiful.

0:06:35 > 0:06:37Well done. Wide of this here.

0:06:39 > 0:06:41Steady, steady.

0:06:44 > 0:06:46Nicely done, mate, that was a very nice lap.

0:06:48 > 0:06:511.38.5 wasn't bad for a first lap.

0:06:51 > 0:06:53Let's see how George got on.

0:06:53 > 0:06:54ENGINE REVS

0:06:54 > 0:06:56Right, Rory, there's a new kid in town.

0:06:56 > 0:06:58- ENGINE STALLS - Uh-oh.

0:06:59 > 0:07:00That's embarrassing.

0:07:03 > 0:07:04TYRES SQUEAL

0:07:04 > 0:07:05Round to the right.

0:07:05 > 0:07:06Go, go, go, go.

0:07:06 > 0:07:08- Go, go, go.- Rabbit, rabbit!

0:07:08 > 0:07:11I would not be able to live with myself if I killed a rabbit.

0:07:16 > 0:07:18Full lock. Full lock. Full lock.

0:07:18 > 0:07:20You're all right.

0:07:20 > 0:07:22Just. You nearly killed us. A bit to the right.

0:07:22 > 0:07:23Splash!

0:07:26 > 0:07:28- Left, left, left, left.- Left.

0:07:28 > 0:07:30- More left!- More left! More left!

0:07:31 > 0:07:32Third gear.

0:07:32 > 0:07:33Go, go, go, go, go.

0:07:36 > 0:07:40George came in with a very respectable 1.41.3.

0:07:40 > 0:07:44Perhaps he was more of a formidable competitor than I had anticipated.

0:07:47 > 0:07:50With every lap, I pushed harder and harder...

0:07:50 > 0:07:51Steady!

0:07:51 > 0:07:54..pushing myself and the car to its limits.

0:07:54 > 0:07:55Control, control.

0:07:55 > 0:07:57George was no different.

0:07:57 > 0:07:58Whoa!

0:07:58 > 0:08:00I'm scaring myself here!

0:08:00 > 0:08:02With every lap, our times continued to improve.

0:08:04 > 0:08:05Dude, that was badass.

0:08:05 > 0:08:06That was a bloody good lap.

0:08:06 > 0:08:08We were four laps in,

0:08:08 > 0:08:09and with only one remaining,

0:08:09 > 0:08:10I was in the lead.

0:08:10 > 0:08:13George however would have to drive the lap of his life

0:08:13 > 0:08:14to get anywhere near me.

0:08:14 > 0:08:18So, now is actually when the really good guys consolidate down,

0:08:18 > 0:08:20put in exactly the same lap.

0:08:20 > 0:08:23Despite Jim's advice, I was hungry for more.

0:08:23 > 0:08:24Light it up.

0:08:24 > 0:08:26It was me against the clock.

0:08:26 > 0:08:28Man against machine.

0:08:28 > 0:08:29Nice and steady.

0:08:30 > 0:08:32HIGH PITCHED REV THEN CLUNK

0:08:33 > 0:08:34RATTLING

0:08:34 > 0:08:36OK, hold it, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa!

0:08:41 > 0:08:42I think we just broke something.

0:08:42 > 0:08:45Perhaps I should have listened to Jim.

0:08:46 > 0:08:47Here comes the cavalry.

0:08:47 > 0:08:49- You know what this means, don't you?- What's that?

0:08:49 > 0:08:52- It's the tow rope of shame. - HE LAUGHS

0:08:52 > 0:08:53With my car out of commission,

0:08:53 > 0:08:56my last lap would have to be logged as incomplete.

0:08:56 > 0:08:58What that meant to me and my total time,

0:08:58 > 0:09:00I didn't know.

0:09:00 > 0:09:02Did I have enough of a lead to sustain the win?

0:09:02 > 0:09:05- I never meant to be going backwards on a racetrack.- No, no.

0:09:06 > 0:09:09It all came down to George and his final lap,

0:09:09 > 0:09:10and he was flying.

0:09:13 > 0:09:16- Left, left, left, left, left. - Whoa, cameraman, cameraman!

0:09:16 > 0:09:17Tree!

0:09:17 > 0:09:18You're not supposed to aim for them!

0:09:18 > 0:09:21Oh, the fence! The fence!

0:09:26 > 0:09:27My arms are dead.

0:09:28 > 0:09:31George's final lap completed, it was the moment of truth.

0:09:31 > 0:09:34- What happened, mate? - We had a slight issue.

0:09:34 > 0:09:35GEORGE LAUGHS

0:09:35 > 0:09:38The car couldn't quite handle my...

0:09:38 > 0:09:40- supreme driving so it broke.- Ooh!

0:09:40 > 0:09:42This is good for us!

0:09:42 > 0:09:43So what are the rules, now?

0:09:43 > 0:09:45So he's broken down, what does that mean for...?

0:09:45 > 0:09:47Well, it's combined score over five laps,

0:09:47 > 0:09:48so we put those times together,

0:09:48 > 0:09:52and whoever's got the fastest time in those five laps is the winner.

0:09:52 > 0:09:55However, if you don't finish a lap,

0:09:55 > 0:09:56we have a did not finish time.

0:09:56 > 0:09:59- And so that, today, is at three minutes.- Three minutes!

0:09:59 > 0:10:01That's going to make it close!

0:10:01 > 0:10:03- You are joking!- We'll be all right, we'll be all right.

0:10:03 > 0:10:05This is the first time I've seen him worried.

0:10:05 > 0:10:07THEY LAUGH

0:10:07 > 0:10:09Right, I need to see this result.

0:10:09 > 0:10:10Are you nervous, Rory?

0:10:11 > 0:10:13- Wow.- Yeah.- Yeah?- Yeah.- Wow.

0:10:13 > 0:10:15- Are we ready for this?- Yes. - Talk to me.

0:10:15 > 0:10:18Biggest improvement, George, 1.36,

0:10:18 > 0:10:20which is astonishing.

0:10:20 > 0:10:22But my man here, a 1.27.7.

0:10:22 > 0:10:24Get in! Get in!

0:10:24 > 0:10:25Look at that, my friend. Good news!

0:10:25 > 0:10:27So, has he won?

0:10:27 > 0:10:28But it's five laps.

0:10:29 > 0:10:31And we've got a broken car.

0:10:31 > 0:10:33What does it mean? What does it mean? What does it mean?

0:10:33 > 0:10:36What it means, Rory, is that we've got 9 minutes 15,

0:10:36 > 0:10:39and it means that your good friend here has got 8 minutes 12.

0:10:39 > 0:10:41- GEORGE CACKLES - WHAT?!

0:10:41 > 0:10:42Hang on.

0:10:42 > 0:10:43I won?!

0:10:43 > 0:10:46- You've beaten me.- Yeah. - Fair play.- Thanks, mate.

0:10:46 > 0:10:48- How does it feel? - You won in Kazakhstan, didn't you?

0:10:48 > 0:10:51- You beat all the boys there. - I did, I did.

0:10:51 > 0:10:52And I've just beat you...

0:10:52 > 0:10:55Which means you're the quickest driver...

0:10:55 > 0:10:57I'm the fastest driver on Top Gear!

0:10:57 > 0:10:58HE LAUGHS

0:10:58 > 0:11:00Oh, dear.

0:11:04 > 0:11:06It's time for some post-race analysis.

0:11:06 > 0:11:08Let's bring out Chris and Rory.

0:11:08 > 0:11:10APPLAUSE

0:11:17 > 0:11:18Hey, mate.

0:11:18 > 0:11:21- How are you, George? - Good, thank you.

0:11:21 > 0:11:23How does it feel to be face-to-face

0:11:23 > 0:11:27with the new fastest driver on Top Gear?

0:11:27 > 0:11:29I can see the logic in it, George,

0:11:29 > 0:11:31where I want to support you and congratulate you.

0:11:31 > 0:11:34Anyone that beats him is doing well in my books.

0:11:34 > 0:11:37So it must feel really good to have beaten him, yeah?

0:11:37 > 0:11:40- It feels good, yeah.- I can feel the smug coming off of you.

0:11:40 > 0:11:42Saw the Stig in the car park earlier and

0:11:42 > 0:11:45he just completely ignored me out of respect.

0:11:49 > 0:11:51I don't think anyone expected me to win that, did they?

0:11:51 > 0:11:54You weren't dripping with testosterone in the early scenes,

0:11:54 > 0:11:55it has to be said. You were quite...

0:11:55 > 0:11:57It was nice to see it wasn't a big macho hero,

0:11:57 > 0:11:59"I'm going to conquer this," it was a bit...tentative,

0:11:59 > 0:12:01I think is the word, George.

0:12:01 > 0:12:02I actually thought, "I do want to win this,"

0:12:02 > 0:12:05and then I arrived and I got in the car and I thought,

0:12:05 > 0:12:09"I love to win, but not as much as I hate to die."

0:12:09 > 0:12:12- These things are serious, though, aren't they?- Yeah, absolutely.

0:12:12 > 0:12:16They are mental. The Ultra4 that you were driving in the Mojave Desert,

0:12:16 > 0:12:18they're, what, 400hp? Two tonnes.

0:12:18 > 0:12:22The Milner R5, 500hp and one tonne.

0:12:22 > 0:12:250-60 in three seconds in the mud - that is a serious piece of kit.

0:12:25 > 0:12:28That's a bit of a baptism by fire, as far as I'm concerned.

0:12:28 > 0:12:29You did really well, mate.

0:12:29 > 0:12:32He's done this type of thing before, he's driven fast cars.

0:12:32 > 0:12:34You've never done anything like this before.

0:12:34 > 0:12:37It must have felt uncontrollably fast to you.

0:12:37 > 0:12:39It did feel faster than the Megane, yeah.

0:12:39 > 0:12:42LAUGHTER

0:12:42 > 0:12:45I will point out that my quickest lap was almost

0:12:45 > 0:12:4910 seconds a lap quicker than yours, so... Just saying.

0:12:49 > 0:12:50Just saying!

0:12:50 > 0:12:54The modesty just drips off him, doesn't it? Week in, week out.

0:12:54 > 0:12:58Two things - you should've listened to Jim, quite clearly.

0:12:58 > 0:13:02Second of all, I gather that we've learned, after the event,

0:13:02 > 0:13:05that George didn't have functioning power steering.

0:13:05 > 0:13:07Yeah.

0:13:07 > 0:13:09Small... Small technicality, it made it a little bit harder for you.

0:13:09 > 0:13:13You know, you don't have the biggest arms in the world, so...

0:13:13 > 0:13:14I didn't want to bring this up.

0:13:14 > 0:13:17You know, I wanted to be gracious in my victory,

0:13:17 > 0:13:18as I'm sure you would've been, Rory.

0:13:18 > 0:13:21How much quicker do you think I would have been if I did, Chris?

0:13:21 > 0:13:25- 11 or 12 seconds a lap.- I think so, too. I think so.- How convenient.

0:13:25 > 0:13:26How convenient!

0:13:26 > 0:13:29Let's not kid ourselves, tonight is all about the Ultra4.

0:13:29 > 0:13:31Now, Chris, you said it would be a cold day in hell before you

0:13:31 > 0:13:33crawled back into one of those things.

0:13:33 > 0:13:36But it appears you've changed your mind.

0:13:36 > 0:13:40Oh, dearie me. Yes, the producers did manage to twist my arm.

0:13:40 > 0:13:43The Ultra4 is unlike anything I've ever driven before.

0:13:43 > 0:13:45Combine one of these with the Mojave and it becomes

0:13:45 > 0:13:48a bone-jarringly intense experience.

0:13:48 > 0:13:52Combine one of these with our test track at Dunsfold and you get this.

0:13:54 > 0:13:56OK, Ultra4 buggy at Dunsfold.

0:13:56 > 0:13:59That's like taking an F1 car into a swamp.

0:13:59 > 0:14:01ENGINE REVS

0:14:04 > 0:14:07Oh, the steering is terrible.

0:14:07 > 0:14:09I've got no idea where I'm going.

0:14:09 > 0:14:15Anyhow, 400hp, of which about 300 is making it to the back wheels.

0:14:15 > 0:14:19You've got to be very careful here because this thing will roll over.

0:14:19 > 0:14:22They really will roll over, these things will.

0:14:24 > 0:14:27These torque converters that have been pressured up

0:14:27 > 0:14:29till they change gear manually are really impressive.

0:14:29 > 0:14:32I've got a manual gear down here, three speed.

0:14:32 > 0:14:35It really doesn't want to oversteer.

0:14:35 > 0:14:370-60 in about five seconds.

0:14:37 > 0:14:40Top speed, over 100mph.

0:14:40 > 0:14:44And this thing is huge. Over two tonnes.

0:14:44 > 0:14:47The brakes are quite good. I don't know how long they'll last,

0:14:47 > 0:14:50it's not meant to sustain this kind of braking.

0:14:50 > 0:14:55The handling is best described as lively, because the amount of

0:14:55 > 0:14:58yaw and lean means that the car wants to roll over.

0:14:58 > 0:15:01And it wouldn't roll in a normal Volvo.

0:15:04 > 0:15:05Wow.

0:15:05 > 0:15:07I suppose through the tyres here,

0:15:07 > 0:15:09I can go straight over the grass, can't I?

0:15:09 > 0:15:11Like now. Yeah, then you can feel it.

0:15:11 > 0:15:15HE LAUGHS

0:15:15 > 0:15:17This is wonderfully absurd.

0:15:17 > 0:15:20I said at the end of that film that I didn't want to drive one of these

0:15:20 > 0:15:23things again, but of course that was a total lie cos it's so cool.

0:15:23 > 0:15:25Super slippery on a wet day.

0:15:25 > 0:15:28You don't even notice it in the Ultra4 buggy

0:15:28 > 0:15:30cos the tyres are so wide.

0:15:30 > 0:15:34And over Gambon. Just a cheeky bit of grass because we can.

0:15:34 > 0:15:36And over the line.

0:15:36 > 0:15:39APPLAUSE

0:15:41 > 0:15:43I mean, that looked ridiculous.

0:15:43 > 0:15:46I half expected you to drive over a row of scrap cars.

0:15:46 > 0:15:50You can just go anywhere you want to on it, apart from,

0:15:50 > 0:15:53ironically, smooth asphalt. It just hates asphalt.

0:15:53 > 0:15:57It's not supposed to be there. Everything feels wrong.

0:15:57 > 0:15:59The forward drive system begins to torque itself up from

0:15:59 > 0:16:01front to rear, so it's not happy.

0:16:01 > 0:16:03Because the tyres have got so much side wall

0:16:03 > 0:16:07and the geometry of the vehicle is so unsuited for track work,

0:16:07 > 0:16:10there's a real danger of making it roll. So you can't just slide it.

0:16:10 > 0:16:13But I actually found it more intimidating around Dunsfold

0:16:13 > 0:16:16because, like any vehicle that has a very specific purpose,

0:16:16 > 0:16:19if you take it from its area of speciality

0:16:19 > 0:16:22and put it somewhere else, it feels horrendous.

0:16:22 > 0:16:24Yeah, I mean, it was designed for King of the Hammers,

0:16:24 > 0:16:26and I suppose it's the perfect moment...

0:16:26 > 0:16:29Can we welcome Eddie Jordan and Sabine Schmitz!

0:16:32 > 0:16:34- Hello, hello.- Hello!

0:16:37 > 0:16:39- Sabine!- George!

0:16:40 > 0:16:42Eddie!

0:16:45 > 0:16:47This is nice. A nice little reunion.

0:16:47 > 0:16:49Have you seen his trophy?

0:16:49 > 0:16:51- Sabine, are you jealous of that trophy at all?- Oh, yes.

0:16:51 > 0:16:55I have plenty of trophies at home, but...nothing like that!

0:16:55 > 0:16:58- The one that got away. - Nothing like that.

0:16:58 > 0:17:01It says on it, "Your engraving here."

0:17:01 > 0:17:04- Yes, because it's mine. - Oh, I'm just holding it for you?

0:17:04 > 0:17:07We put Sabine Schmitz on it and then I...

0:17:07 > 0:17:10There was a point during King of the Hammers where you were stuck

0:17:10 > 0:17:13on that hill. I mean, were you scared?

0:17:13 > 0:17:17Yeah, I couldn't believe that it was possible to go up that steep hill.

0:17:17 > 0:17:20I mean, Matt was next to me in the passenger seat and he said,

0:17:20 > 0:17:25"They want us going up that hill!" I said, "That's impossible."

0:17:25 > 0:17:27"OK. Just do it." You know?

0:17:27 > 0:17:30If you think too long about it, then you disappear,

0:17:30 > 0:17:32so just do it and go for it.

0:17:32 > 0:17:36There was one moment where we saw you a little bit nervous, Sabine.

0:17:36 > 0:17:38Let's take another look.

0:17:38 > 0:17:39Oh, I don't want to!

0:17:47 > 0:17:48Ah!

0:17:48 > 0:17:51SHE SCREAMS

0:17:51 > 0:17:53Steering wheel came off.

0:17:53 > 0:17:55- BLEEP- hell!

0:17:55 > 0:17:56OK, you good?

0:17:59 > 0:18:01- BLEEP- hell!

0:18:02 > 0:18:03Where are we?

0:18:03 > 0:18:06You're good, you're good.

0:18:06 > 0:18:08- BLEEP- hell.

0:18:08 > 0:18:10I don't want to have the steering wheel come off!

0:18:12 > 0:18:17THEY BOTH LAUGH

0:18:19 > 0:18:20Oh, man!

0:18:20 > 0:18:22This is crazy.

0:18:27 > 0:18:30Not what you want to happen, is it?

0:18:30 > 0:18:34There is no camera on this planet that could actually visualise

0:18:34 > 0:18:38- how steep that hill actually was. - I mean, it was...

0:18:38 > 0:18:40It was that, kind of. It was stupid.

0:18:40 > 0:18:42You spent your whole time looking at the sky,

0:18:42 > 0:18:46so you just do this and you hope you'll get to the top at some point.

0:18:46 > 0:18:48It was horrid.

0:18:48 > 0:18:51And there was one other difficulty that you had to contend with,

0:18:51 > 0:18:54which might have been even more challenging.

0:18:54 > 0:18:56Let's take a look.

0:18:56 > 0:18:59You've got a cowboy running your campaign here. This is a cowboy.

0:18:59 > 0:19:01I've got the Dumbledore of motorsport here.

0:19:01 > 0:19:03If I lose this...

0:19:03 > 0:19:04You're dead.

0:19:04 > 0:19:06Today, we need a positive vibe.

0:19:06 > 0:19:09Will you come on? We can go a bit quicker, man!

0:19:09 > 0:19:12Clear head. Do you understand?

0:19:12 > 0:19:16Look, you can swing more left, Chris! Chris, this way, left, left.

0:19:16 > 0:19:18Stop saying left!

0:19:18 > 0:19:22- You seem a little jumpy. You OK? - Actually, it's a disguise.

0:19:23 > 0:19:26Confidence. Read that over here, look, see?

0:19:26 > 0:19:28C-O-N-F.

0:19:28 > 0:19:31I'm going to scare the shit out of myself about five times.

0:19:31 > 0:19:32But I know you're going to do it more again.

0:19:32 > 0:19:35I do care about Chris, he's a nice guy.

0:19:35 > 0:19:38- He is a nice guy.- And he needs tender love and care.

0:19:38 > 0:19:40You are a complete dick.

0:19:40 > 0:19:42- What is wrong with you?- I like it.

0:19:42 > 0:19:45- Are you impressed? - Well, I know you're mad, so...

0:19:52 > 0:19:53Eddie...

0:19:53 > 0:19:57- Eddie, do you know how to spell confidence?- Probably not.

0:19:57 > 0:19:59The moment for me was on the start line.

0:19:59 > 0:20:02I just got this little voice that comes on and I just say,

0:20:02 > 0:20:04"Any other final notes?" And he just goes...

0:20:04 > 0:20:07"Of course, just jump the start and send the bloke to your right

0:20:07 > 0:20:08"into the wall."

0:20:08 > 0:20:11And that was pure Eddie. He wasn't... There was no acting.

0:20:11 > 0:20:13That was what was going through his mind.

0:20:13 > 0:20:17He was like, "Just take everyone out around you and then you'll be fine."

0:20:17 > 0:20:19So, Eddie, what was your management strategy there?

0:20:19 > 0:20:21Because there were a few things going on.

0:20:21 > 0:20:24Well, the thing is, Matt was trying to interfere all the time.

0:20:24 > 0:20:28And I just needed to put him in his box. But that was fine because...

0:20:30 > 0:20:32Initially, he was nervous, there was no doubt about it.

0:20:32 > 0:20:35But actually, the truth, so was I!

0:20:35 > 0:20:38It was frightening when you're going up there like that.

0:20:38 > 0:20:42And so, I needed to continue being nervous, but not let him know.

0:20:42 > 0:20:46And...and then take the nerves away from him and try and pacify him

0:20:46 > 0:20:49and try and get into his head that this can be done,

0:20:49 > 0:20:52we can achieve anything we set our mind to do.

0:20:52 > 0:20:54And he did, didn't you?

0:20:54 > 0:20:59I think actually we did succeed in our weird dysfunctional way.

0:20:59 > 0:21:01First thing he said to me was,

0:21:01 > 0:21:05"I'm going to get behind LeBlanc's eyeballs. I'm going to blank him.

0:21:05 > 0:21:08"I'm not going to talk to him, I'm going to stare straight into him."

0:21:08 > 0:21:10Or through him or some other phrase.

0:21:10 > 0:21:13And the next time we sat next to Matt, he immediately went,

0:21:13 > 0:21:14"So how's it going?"

0:21:16 > 0:21:19Well, I mean, you were in fierce competition during the day,

0:21:19 > 0:21:22but what I thought was really sweet was when you finished

0:21:22 > 0:21:26and you went back home, you were sleeping in quite close quarters.

0:21:26 > 0:21:29- Let's take a look.- Oh, no, do you remember this bit?

0:21:29 > 0:21:32MATT: OK, we've got a big day tomorrow, guys.

0:21:32 > 0:21:35Everybody get a good night's sleep, all right?

0:21:35 > 0:21:37Why have I got the top bunk?

0:21:37 > 0:21:39Cos monkeys climb high.

0:21:39 > 0:21:43Why have I got the bottom bunk?

0:21:43 > 0:21:44Er, cos I have this one.

0:21:46 > 0:21:48TOILET FLUSHES

0:21:50 > 0:21:51Good night.

0:21:53 > 0:21:55Light a match, Sabine!

0:21:55 > 0:21:57I heard that!

0:22:01 > 0:22:03I've just got a sitcom idea!

0:22:04 > 0:22:06"Light a match, Sabine?"

0:22:06 > 0:22:10That's not been said on television before, has it?

0:22:10 > 0:22:13It seemed like, overall, it was a really fun trip.

0:22:13 > 0:22:16I love being parachuted into these different universes.

0:22:16 > 0:22:19Everything there was so different.

0:22:19 > 0:22:23Loads of people enjoying a sport that we knew nothing about

0:22:23 > 0:22:28and they welcomed us into it, made us feel a part of it.

0:22:28 > 0:22:32The vehicles were absolutely magnificent, I think.

0:22:32 > 0:22:33But it did feel like we were

0:22:33 > 0:22:35so far away from our comfort zones, didn't it?

0:22:35 > 0:22:37One thing that occurred to me -

0:22:37 > 0:22:39that I thought there's a great bond

0:22:39 > 0:22:42and a great embrace amongst all the competitors.

0:22:42 > 0:22:46- No sooner had he destroyed the gearbox on the car...- Unfair.

0:22:46 > 0:22:48No, it's true, you destroyed it.

0:22:48 > 0:22:52And this amazing car was put there for us to continue on the event.

0:22:52 > 0:22:54I can't imagine that happening in Formula One.

0:22:54 > 0:22:56I just couldn't even think about it.

0:22:56 > 0:22:59I can't even think about any form of other type of racing

0:22:59 > 0:23:01that a complete car would be made available

0:23:01 > 0:23:03so as we could actually carry on and do what we were doing.

0:23:03 > 0:23:05It's a big, big family.

0:23:05 > 0:23:08Everybody is there for everybody and they have parties together,

0:23:08 > 0:23:10they fight against each other.

0:23:10 > 0:23:15This experience was mad, but I'd love to come back and do it again.

0:23:15 > 0:23:16Brilliant. Well, sadly,

0:23:16 > 0:23:19I'm afraid that's all we've got time for tonight.

0:23:19 > 0:23:22- Rory, what have we got in store next week?- A true Extra Gear exclusive.

0:23:22 > 0:23:26We show you just how much goes into filming one of our epic road trips.

0:23:26 > 0:23:29And Chris and I reminisce about our time together in Cuba.

0:23:29 > 0:23:31- Make sure you watch.- Can't wait.

0:23:31 > 0:23:35We'll see you again next week for more Extra Gear. Goodnight.
