0:00:58 > 0:01:01As a number one-selling pop princess,

0:01:01 > 0:01:04Cher may have the swagger jagger now,

0:01:04 > 0:01:07but in 2005, she didn't display her X-Factor.

0:01:07 > 0:01:09When I was 12,

0:01:09 > 0:01:11I was a bit of a shy one.

0:01:11 > 0:01:16But I was easily provoked, a bit naughty at times.

0:01:17 > 0:01:19He's a TV tough guy

0:01:19 > 0:01:24who puts wannabe police officers through their paces.

0:01:24 > 0:01:25This is nothing compared to

0:01:25 > 0:01:28the physical work we put them through during Cop School training.

0:01:28 > 0:01:33But, in 1989, Rav was more Clark Kent than Superman.

0:01:33 > 0:01:37I wouldn't say I was the coolest kid at school

0:01:37 > 0:01:40and I wasn't the nerdiest,

0:01:40 > 0:01:42but I was a geeky-looking kid.

0:01:42 > 0:01:44Bit of a cheeky smile.

0:01:45 > 0:01:49Of all the Strictly judges, he's the wicked witch.

0:01:49 > 0:01:52A complete dance disaster.

0:01:52 > 0:01:55That's now. But back in 1977,

0:01:55 > 0:01:59it wasn't his broomstick that he was attached to.

0:01:59 > 0:02:02When I was 12, I was a fat little porky child

0:02:02 > 0:02:06that was into woodwind and brass instruments.

0:02:06 > 0:02:09- BRASS PARP - Excuse YOU, Craig!

0:02:09 > 0:02:12These three are massive celebrities today,

0:02:12 > 0:02:15but we're not interested in now,

0:02:15 > 0:02:17so let's go back to when they were 12,

0:02:17 > 0:02:20and find out what they did when they were kids.

0:02:20 > 0:02:24I remember looking absolutely dreadful when I was 12.

0:02:24 > 0:02:28My hair was awful.

0:02:28 > 0:02:30I had it slicked back, in a ponytail.

0:02:30 > 0:02:33I had long hair down to my shoulder.

0:02:33 > 0:02:37I had a very round, chubby face.

0:02:37 > 0:02:39I was small, a bit geeky.

0:02:39 > 0:02:42I had curtain hair, big teeth.

0:02:42 > 0:02:44I had very big teeth for quite a small head.

0:02:44 > 0:02:49I wore Hawaiian shirts, polyester.

0:02:49 > 0:02:52They would be tight over my body. It was hilarious.

0:02:52 > 0:02:57I went through a phase of wearing luminous colours.

0:02:57 > 0:02:59Bright yellow tights.

0:02:59 > 0:03:01I'd wear the whole tutu thing.

0:03:01 > 0:03:06If I wore them now, the fashion police would be onto me.

0:03:06 > 0:03:09Fashion disasters aside,

0:03:09 > 0:03:13what did Craig, Cher and Rav get up to in school?

0:03:13 > 0:03:18I remember in a science class, we made our own experiment

0:03:18 > 0:03:20to see how flammable bogies were.

0:03:20 > 0:03:24I don't think you have to be Einstein

0:03:24 > 0:03:26to work out the results of Rav's experiment.

0:03:26 > 0:03:28But let's find out, anyway.

0:03:28 > 0:03:32Always remember, safety first. Put on your goggles.

0:03:32 > 0:03:37Next, get a lovely fresh bogey, and give it a blast in the Bunsen.

0:03:37 > 0:03:39I wonder what will happen next(?)

0:03:39 > 0:03:43It made a horrendous smell, but they're not flammable.

0:03:43 > 0:03:47Yes, Rav. Burning bogeys is stupid and smelly.

0:03:47 > 0:03:50No surprise what happens if you're caught!

0:03:50 > 0:03:53Try explaining to your parents why you're late home -

0:03:53 > 0:03:56cos you got detention for burning a bogey.

0:03:56 > 0:03:59For Craig, in Australia,

0:03:59 > 0:04:03having fun in school wasn't about bogeys.

0:04:03 > 0:04:05Disco was enormous.

0:04:05 > 0:04:07It was about boogie.

0:04:10 > 0:04:13You were cool if you could disco dance,

0:04:13 > 0:04:16because Saturday Night Fever had just come out.

0:04:16 > 0:04:21Saturday Night Fever was a box office smash when Craig was 12.

0:04:21 > 0:04:25It made disco the dance craze of the decade, but only if you could dance!

0:04:25 > 0:04:30I couldn't do a step. Everyone crowded round those that could do it.

0:04:30 > 0:04:35I started learning small things with my feet and shoulders,

0:04:35 > 0:04:38my head, and then my hands.

0:04:40 > 0:04:43When we'd go to any school function,

0:04:43 > 0:04:45I could show off my cool moves.

0:04:45 > 0:04:49MUSIC: "Disco Inferno" by the Trammps

0:04:49 > 0:04:52I wasn't cool. I was terrible,

0:04:52 > 0:04:56but it inspired me to want to learn to dance.

0:04:56 > 0:05:01In Britain, the BBC were giving the coolest disco dancing lessons

0:05:01 > 0:05:03on TV...kind of.

0:05:03 > 0:05:08The exhilarating thing about disco dancing is the use of the hands.

0:05:08 > 0:05:11It's right hand forward, left hand forward.

0:05:11 > 0:05:15That step...and that step.

0:05:15 > 0:05:18You're getting the hang of it.

0:05:18 > 0:05:19It was just amazing.

0:05:19 > 0:05:22With days filled disco dancing and bogey burning,

0:05:22 > 0:05:25Craig and Rav didn't seem to do much real work at school.

0:05:25 > 0:05:28Let's hope Cher was a better pupil.

0:05:28 > 0:05:30I didn't really fit in at school.

0:05:30 > 0:05:34I just did as I pleased, really.

0:05:34 > 0:05:36If I wanted to stay in school at lunchtime, I'd stay,

0:05:36 > 0:05:39but sometimes, because I lived just over the road from school,

0:05:39 > 0:05:43I used to just go home and have a sing on the karaoke.

0:05:43 > 0:05:47I never liked to get my friends listen to me sing.

0:05:47 > 0:05:48I used to be really embarrassed.

0:05:48 > 0:05:50Cher got over her embarrassment

0:05:50 > 0:05:55and was soon entering local talent competitions.

0:05:55 > 0:05:57SHE SINGS

0:05:57 > 0:06:00While Cher's passion at 12 was music,

0:06:00 > 0:06:03Rav's talents were on the sports field.

0:06:03 > 0:06:05I was a sporty kid.

0:06:05 > 0:06:08There was only one rugby team in the town.

0:06:08 > 0:06:11I played for them since I was seven.

0:06:11 > 0:06:15I did athletics in the summer, after school.

0:06:15 > 0:06:17I used to do anything.

0:06:17 > 0:06:19Life on the sports field may have been fun.

0:06:19 > 0:06:22But life in Kent was proving difficult

0:06:22 > 0:06:24for Rav and his family.

0:06:24 > 0:06:27My dad's black, my mum's white.

0:06:27 > 0:06:32He was one of the first people of colour to move into the town,

0:06:33 > 0:06:38which was very hard, because we did get some trouble and abuse.

0:06:38 > 0:06:43I remember at that age I tried to take a shortcut through a park

0:06:43 > 0:06:46and some much older kids - 18, 19 - set their dogs on me.

0:06:46 > 0:06:50They said I was the wrong colour to walk through their park.

0:06:50 > 0:06:53That did two things.

0:06:53 > 0:06:55It scared the pants off me -

0:06:55 > 0:06:58and proved how fast I could run!

0:06:58 > 0:07:00Cos they never caught me!

0:07:00 > 0:07:04Racism at any age is something no-one should have to face,

0:07:04 > 0:07:07but at 12, Rav found that the sports field

0:07:07 > 0:07:11was a place where everyone is accepted.

0:07:11 > 0:07:16When you do a sport, they don't care what colour you are.

0:07:16 > 0:07:18I had people on my team

0:07:18 > 0:07:22who were mixed race, like I was,

0:07:22 > 0:07:24who were tall, who were fat, who were small.

0:07:24 > 0:07:27Rugby has a position for everyone.

0:07:27 > 0:07:32It was the thing where I felt most accepted at that age.

0:07:35 > 0:07:39That's what Cher, Craig and Rav were like when they were 12,

0:07:39 > 0:07:41but what were they listening to?

0:07:41 > 0:07:44In '77, I loved the music of Queen.

0:07:44 > 0:07:48# You're a shooting star leaping through the sky like a tiger

0:07:48 > 0:07:51# Defying the laws of gravity. #

0:07:51 > 0:07:57Now, people think of Queen as, # We will, we will rock you. #

0:07:57 > 0:08:00But, actually, it was hardcore.

0:08:00 > 0:08:03Queen were huge, back in 1970s

0:08:03 > 0:08:08and have gone on to be one of the most influential bands of all time.

0:08:08 > 0:08:13My favourite thing was the way Freddie Mercury strutted about.

0:08:13 > 0:08:14# Don't stop me now. #

0:08:14 > 0:08:17He was so weird looking, and had funny teeth and big lips

0:08:17 > 0:08:18and all this hair.

0:08:18 > 0:08:20# Don't want to stop at all. #

0:08:20 > 0:08:24We studied Bohemian Rhapsody for my music course.

0:08:24 > 0:08:26MUSIC: "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen

0:08:26 > 0:08:30Bohemian Rhapsody is one of THE biggest-selling songs ever

0:08:30 > 0:08:34and its ground-breaking video is said to have kick-started the trend

0:08:34 > 0:08:36for bands to create music videos.

0:08:36 > 0:08:38I just loved the lyrics,

0:08:38 > 0:08:40I loved the music, everything.

0:08:40 > 0:08:43# I'm just a poor boy, nobody loves me

0:08:43 > 0:08:46# He's just a poor boy from a poor family

0:08:46 > 0:08:50# Spare him his life from this monstrosity. #

0:08:50 > 0:08:51I absolutely loved it.

0:08:51 > 0:08:55It taught me so much about music,

0:08:55 > 0:08:57because it goes through opera...

0:08:57 > 0:09:00# Let him go! Bismillah! We will not let you go. #

0:09:00 > 0:09:03It goes through classical themes,

0:09:03 > 0:09:06it goes through heavy rock.

0:09:10 > 0:09:13How cool is studying that?

0:09:13 > 0:09:17It may have been all about Rhapsody for Craig in 1977,

0:09:17 > 0:09:21but for Rav, 1990 was all about rap.

0:09:22 > 0:09:25When I was 12, the massive one was MC Hammer, You Can't Touch This.

0:09:25 > 0:09:28That was huge. I remember hearing that everywhere.

0:09:28 > 0:09:33MC Hammer sent rap mainstream in the 1990s.

0:09:33 > 0:09:35His album sold ten million copies,

0:09:35 > 0:09:37despite the dodgy trousers.

0:09:37 > 0:09:40He had these huge Hammer Pants -

0:09:40 > 0:09:43the baggiest, hugest

0:09:43 > 0:09:46jogging bottoms ever.

0:09:46 > 0:09:48MUSIC: "Can't Touch This" by MC Hammer

0:09:50 > 0:09:54I've only seen one other person wear those.

0:09:54 > 0:09:57That was my big sister, when she was pregnant.

0:09:57 > 0:10:00They were so stretchy, they went over her massive tummy.

0:10:00 > 0:10:03For nine months, she was dressed like MC Hammer, so I told her.

0:10:03 > 0:10:05# Stop - Hammer time! #

0:10:08 > 0:10:12MC Hammer wasn't the only rapper Rav was listening to in 1990.

0:10:12 > 0:10:14Vanilla Ice, "Ice Ice Baby".

0:10:14 > 0:10:18I thought he was Mr Cool.

0:10:18 > 0:10:23In 1990, everyone thought Vanilla Ice was cool.

0:10:23 > 0:10:26Well, everyone except Rav's headmaster.

0:10:26 > 0:10:30The rule was, if you turn up like that, you'll get suspended.

0:10:30 > 0:10:34I didn't want to get suspended for looking like Vanilla Ice.

0:10:34 > 0:10:35Despite being hated by teachers,

0:10:35 > 0:10:38"Ice Ice Baby" is a song loved by many.

0:10:38 > 0:10:43So much so, Jedward teamed up with Mr Ice to update it.

0:10:43 > 0:10:46MUSIC: "Under Pressure" by Jedward

0:10:46 > 0:10:48When Rav was a kid, everyone was releasing rap songs.

0:10:48 > 0:10:52Even well-known cartoon characters were rapping.

0:10:52 > 0:10:54There was a song from The Simpsons, Do The Bartman.

0:10:54 > 0:10:57MUSIC: "Do The Bartman" by Bart Simpson

0:10:59 > 0:11:02It's still a guilty pleasure of mine.

0:11:04 > 0:11:08Yes, this really is Bart Simpson,

0:11:08 > 0:11:11and he really did get to number one in the UK charts

0:11:11 > 0:11:14with this song.

0:11:14 > 0:11:19Bart didn't write his own rhymes, though, because he's not real.

0:11:19 > 0:11:21He had help from Michael Jackson...

0:11:21 > 0:11:23MUSIC: "Bad" by Michael Jackson

0:11:23 > 0:11:26..who was a massive fan of The Simpsons.

0:11:26 > 0:11:27# Who's bad? #

0:11:27 > 0:11:29# If you can do the Bart You're bad, like Michael Jackson. #

0:11:29 > 0:11:32While Rav was loving his rap in 1990,

0:11:32 > 0:11:35what was Cher listening to at 12?

0:11:35 > 0:11:38Pop, hip-hop, R&B?

0:11:38 > 0:11:40The one thing people don't know about me

0:11:40 > 0:11:45is that, when I was 12, I actually loved singing country songs.

0:11:45 > 0:11:47Unbelievable!

0:11:47 > 0:11:51# I'm just a fool who's willing. #

0:11:51 > 0:11:54I used to sing country songs,

0:11:54 > 0:11:56like Patsy Cline...

0:11:56 > 0:11:59# MUSIC; "Crazy" by Patsy Cline

0:11:59 > 0:12:00Dolly Parton...

0:12:00 > 0:12:05MUSIC: "Jolene" by Dolly Parton

0:12:05 > 0:12:09My family really love country music,

0:12:09 > 0:12:11and that's why, from hearing it all the time

0:12:11 > 0:12:14and learning the lyrics,

0:12:14 > 0:12:16I really love singing it.

0:12:16 > 0:12:21# I'm begging of you Please don't take my man. #

0:12:21 > 0:12:26There's lots of elements within country songs

0:12:26 > 0:12:29that are used nowadays in R&B music and hip hop.

0:12:29 > 0:12:36I think it's widened my ability and brought me to the way I am today.

0:12:36 > 0:12:40When Cher was 12, country really wasn't that popular.

0:12:40 > 0:12:44It had been over a decade since classics like this charted...

0:12:44 > 0:12:47MUSIC: "Achy Breaky Heart" by Billy Ray Cyrus

0:12:50 > 0:12:54Yes, if you ignore the horrendous haircut,

0:12:54 > 0:12:56you'll notice that is Billy Ray Cyrus,

0:12:56 > 0:12:59Miley Cyrus' dad, way before he played the part

0:12:59 > 0:13:02of...Miley's dad in Hannah Montana.

0:13:02 > 0:13:07My most-hated song, when I was 12 was "Is This The Way To Amarillo?"

0:13:07 > 0:13:09It drove me insane.

0:13:09 > 0:13:13MUSIC: "Is This The Way To Amarillo?" by Peter Kay

0:13:13 > 0:13:17Peter Kay released this song to raise money for Comic Relief.

0:13:17 > 0:13:20He mimed along to the voice of Tony Christie,

0:13:20 > 0:13:22who originally sang the words in 1971.

0:13:22 > 0:13:25When Cher was 12, it was huge.

0:13:25 > 0:13:28Annoyingly, everyone was singing it,

0:13:28 > 0:13:31and doing those stupid dance moves.

0:13:31 > 0:13:33That's the one, Peter.

0:13:34 > 0:13:37It's a good thing Cher was into country,

0:13:37 > 0:13:40as 2005 was a particularly bad year for music.

0:13:40 > 0:13:44Let me take you through my bottom three worst tracks from that year.

0:13:44 > 0:13:49At three, Akon with "Lonely".

0:13:49 > 0:13:50Sadly, Akon wasn't all that lonely.

0:13:50 > 0:13:54He's joined by what can only be described as a singing chipmunk.

0:13:58 > 0:14:01Pipe down, Alvin!

0:14:01 > 0:14:03At 2, it's Chico.

0:14:03 > 0:14:06He was the comedy X-Factor singer,

0:14:06 > 0:14:10who released a song all about himself, Chico Time.

0:14:12 > 0:14:14Surely, the only thing worse than this

0:14:14 > 0:14:17is a singing frog riding an invisible motorbike...

0:14:19 > 0:14:21..which, sadly, is exactly what's on at number one.

0:14:21 > 0:14:26This little fellow is called The Crazy Frog,

0:14:26 > 0:14:29who started life as a mobile phone ringtone.

0:14:29 > 0:14:32As you can hear, it's pretty terrible.

0:14:32 > 0:14:35OK, that's enough of that!

0:14:35 > 0:14:38What's wrong with the people in 2005?

0:14:41 > 0:14:43Still to come, Cover Drive

0:14:43 > 0:14:45talk about romance at school.

0:14:45 > 0:14:49He didn't ask to be my Valentine. He gave me a chocolate heart

0:14:49 > 0:14:52and he said, "This is for you".

0:14:53 > 0:14:56Rav Wilding confesses to his secret crush.

0:14:56 > 0:14:58I fancied her. I thought she was hot.

0:14:58 > 0:15:02And Craig gets frustrated with his comedy hero.

0:15:02 > 0:15:04Adorable, and likeable,

0:15:04 > 0:15:08but you want to strangle him

0:15:08 > 0:15:10for getting it wrong all the time.

0:15:12 > 0:15:15First, let's see what news stories had an impact

0:26:17 > 0:26:20thinking which direction to go, and what to be.

0:26:20 > 0:26:22If I could back to 12,

0:26:22 > 0:26:24knowing everything I know now,

0:26:29 > 0:26:32do really well, and not misbehave.

0:26:32 > 0:26:36The class joker might be funny at the time,

0:26:36 > 0:26:37but in the long run,

0:26:37 > 0:26:41people are laughing at you, not with you.

0:26:41 > 0:26:44I would say, "Wake up!"

0:26:47 > 0:26:51and don't care what other people think.

0:26:51 > 0:26:54If I was 12 again, I'd not tolerate the bullying.

0:27:18 > 0:27:20and the things I wanted to do.

0:27:20 > 0:27:25If I was 12 again, I'd definitely learn to dance,

0:27:25 > 0:27:28especially disco, secretly,

0:27:28 > 0:27:33so I could go into the playground, and say, "Look at that!"

0:27:33 > 0:27:35I would love it!

0:27:37 > 0:27:40So what have we learned?

0:27:40 > 0:27:43If you dream of dance stardom,
