0:00:15 > 0:00:17Our celebs remember the best of times and the worst,
0:00:17 > 0:00:21when friendships could be fraught and kids could be cruel.
0:00:21 > 0:00:23I was picked on for being a bit shorter.
0:00:23 > 0:00:27Because I had a funny name as well I got really picked on.
0:00:27 > 0:00:30Because I was a sensitive person, if somebody did have a dig at me,
0:00:30 > 0:00:32that made it fun for him to have another go.
0:00:32 > 0:00:36And find out what you should do if you are a victim of bullying.
0:00:37 > 0:00:41Have you ever wondered what it would have been like to be best friends
0:00:41 > 0:00:44with your favourite celebs when they were your age?
0:00:44 > 0:00:46Which tunes got them feeling all chummy
0:00:46 > 0:00:49and what buddies on the box did they like to watch?
0:00:49 > 0:00:53Because despite the glamorous lifestyles they now lead,
0:00:53 > 0:00:57once they were a kid trying to make friends just like you.

0:01:01 > 0:01:03and asks them to become 12 again.
0:01:06 > 0:01:09From presenters to actors,
0:01:09 > 0:01:11to comedians and magicians,
0:01:11 > 0:01:14they've all had fun with and fretted over friendship.
0:01:14 > 0:01:16Just go away.
0:01:16 > 0:01:18So let's find out what your favourite stars remember
0:01:18 > 0:01:20about becoming bezzy mates.
0:01:20 > 0:01:22Well done, guys.
0:01:26 > 0:01:30- Friends meant everything to me at 12. - The TV show?- Had it started?
0:01:30 > 0:01:33- No, not Friends the TV show.- Sorry.
0:01:33 > 0:01:35We had a great group of friends.
0:01:35 > 0:01:38I've still got the same friends now, ten years on, which is amazing.
0:01:38 > 0:01:41I was always the comedy fat one at the side.
0:01:41 > 0:01:44When I was around 12 I was, like, the stupid, short one
0:01:44 > 0:01:46that none of the girls fancied.
0:01:46 > 0:01:48I was the funny one because my dad's a comedian
0:01:48 > 0:01:52and it was dead easy to be the funny one because I just used his act.
0:01:52 > 0:01:54I probably had a lot less friends than I thought.
0:01:54 > 0:01:59I had a lot of people who took advantage of my kind nature.
0:01:59 > 0:02:02- I didn't really have many friends, did you?- No!
0:02:02 > 0:02:04Oh, bless! I'll be your mate.
0:02:07 > 0:02:11So when you're 12, how important is friendship?
0:02:11 > 0:02:14I think friends are so important at the age of 12.
0:02:14 > 0:02:17You join a new school where you try to meet new people.
0:02:17 > 0:02:19You do new lessons and stuff and homework.
0:02:19 > 0:02:21It's completely different and alien to you.
0:02:21 > 0:02:24If your friends are going through the same thing, which they are,
0:02:24 > 0:02:27that's when you need your friends the most, really.
0:02:27 > 0:02:30Friendships at 12 were quite fraught
0:02:30 > 0:02:35because you're quite self-conscious. It matters what your friends think.
0:02:35 > 0:02:37I don't know how you make friends.
0:02:37 > 0:02:39You just kind of do make friends.
0:02:39 > 0:02:42I don't think there's any science to it, no formula.
0:02:42 > 0:02:45I never had a best friend at school. I had groups of friends
0:02:45 > 0:02:47but I never had that one-on-one.
0:02:47 > 0:02:50I remember writing in my diary that I should focus this year
0:02:50 > 0:02:52on trying to get a best friend.
0:02:52 > 0:02:55I remember looking round the class trying to choose.
0:02:55 > 0:02:56I had a close group of friends.
0:02:56 > 0:02:58It's just I wasn't super-popular.
0:02:58 > 0:03:01I had, like, five or six really good mates.
0:03:01 > 0:03:05I had a big group of friends and we hung out together.
0:03:05 > 0:03:08You always had one or two that you used to keep as your close friends
0:03:08 > 0:03:10and you'd tell them everything.
0:03:10 > 0:03:13It was a nice thing to know there was someone to listen to you.
0:03:13 > 0:03:16When you're 12, friends are everything.
0:03:16 > 0:03:18If you've not got mates, it's a disaster.
0:03:20 > 0:03:22So that's what our celebs felt about friendship
0:03:22 > 0:03:25but what wacky things did they do to be part of the gang?
0:03:27 > 0:03:30We had a secret language that I made up.
0:03:30 > 0:03:34It was basically you would write numbers in a letter
0:03:34 > 0:03:35rather than the alphabet.
0:03:35 > 0:03:42All it was, the letter A was one, the letter B was two,
0:03:42 > 0:03:45and so on and so forth. Now, I thought it was a great idea.
0:03:45 > 0:03:47The boys didn't.
0:03:47 > 0:03:50So no-one ever did it. Instead they got girlfriends
0:03:50 > 0:03:52and I was at home writing letters to myself.
0:03:52 > 0:03:57Me and my friends could speak Aigy Paigy, a special language
0:03:57 > 0:03:59where after every vowel you put an "aig",
0:03:59 > 0:04:00so you're saying the same sentence.
0:04:00 > 0:04:02If I said, "Hello. My name's Hayley."
0:04:02 > 0:04:06I'd say, "Haigellaigo. Maigay naigame aigis Haigylaigey."
0:04:06 > 0:04:08You'd be able to understand that
0:04:08 > 0:04:11but if you didn't speak it no-one else would be able to understand it.
0:04:11 > 0:04:14I'm totally lost!
0:04:14 > 0:04:16I was good at speaking it but not as good at picking up on it
0:04:16 > 0:04:19but my best friend was brilliant at picking up on it
0:04:19 > 0:04:21and not as good at speaking it so we were a team.
0:04:21 > 0:04:26Friendship bracelets were massive when I was at school.
0:04:26 > 0:04:29We used to knot together three or four pieces of coloured thread
0:04:29 > 0:04:31and then you did a knotting, twisting pattern
0:04:31 > 0:04:33to make it into a little bracelet.
0:04:33 > 0:04:36It took hours and actually they were a really nice idea
0:04:36 > 0:04:38because you'd give them to your mates.
0:04:38 > 0:04:40You didn't want anyone to be left out
0:04:40 > 0:04:42so you'd end up giving out about eight or nine.
0:04:42 > 0:04:45Gutted! Helen never gave me one.
0:04:45 > 0:04:48If someone made one for you it was heart-warming. You'd think,
0:04:48 > 0:04:52"You've spent time on that. Everyone will know we're mates."
0:04:52 > 0:04:54It was like a little club.
0:04:54 > 0:04:57We had those necklaces, a heart broken into two pieces.
0:04:57 > 0:04:59One says "best" and one says "friends".
0:04:59 > 0:05:00Together it made the whole heart.
0:05:00 > 0:05:04You'd give your half to your best friend but a few days later
0:05:04 > 0:05:07you'd want it back because you had a new best friend.
0:05:07 > 0:05:09But it wasn't only you, Helen.
0:05:09 > 0:05:11Lots of our celebs have experienced
0:05:11 > 0:05:14when friendship can be flighty, fleeting and fickle.
0:05:14 > 0:05:17I had a friend who flipped a coin to be my friend.
0:05:17 > 0:05:18Some friend he was, eh?
0:05:18 > 0:05:21"I'm now going to flip this coin. Heads, I'll be Barney's friend.
0:05:21 > 0:05:24"If it's tails, I will not." Tails!
0:05:24 > 0:05:27I think it had two tails either side of it and he was winding me up.
0:05:27 > 0:05:29You love them one day and they're your best mates
0:05:29 > 0:05:33and you're going to stay at each other's house that weekend,
0:05:33 > 0:05:36then if you invite someone else to stay, it upsets that person,
0:05:36 > 0:05:38then next minute you hate each other.
0:05:38 > 0:05:40You have best friends at different places.
0:05:40 > 0:05:42"You're my best friend at school but you are at dance club."
0:05:42 > 0:05:44You had emergency friends as well,
0:05:44 > 0:05:47friends you hung out with just because there was no-one else.
0:05:47 > 0:05:51You were someone else's emergency friend which never felt very nice.
0:05:51 > 0:05:55Emergency or otherwise, that's our celebs' take on friendship,
0:05:55 > 0:05:59but what pally pop songs made them feel like soul mates?
0:05:59 > 0:06:01How many songs have been written about friends?
0:06:01 > 0:06:04There are loads of classics. Obviously The Rembrandts.
0:06:04 > 0:06:08# So no-one told you life was gonna be this way... #
0:06:08 > 0:06:12I fell in love with that song so my mum bought me the sheet music.
0:06:12 > 0:06:15I learned it on the piano and thought I was really cool.
0:06:15 > 0:06:18Originally written as the theme music for mega hit US series Friends,
0:06:18 > 0:06:23I'll Be There For You reached number three in the UK charts in 1995.
0:06:23 > 0:06:27# But I'll be there for you... #
0:06:27 > 0:06:30- That's a great song, that says it all.- Yeah.
0:06:30 > 0:06:32# I'll be there for you
0:06:32 > 0:06:34# Cos you've been there before
0:06:34 > 0:06:38# I'll be there for you
0:06:38 > 0:06:40# Cos you're there for me too. #
0:06:40 > 0:06:42SHE GIGGLES
0:06:42 > 0:06:45Not quite, Kirstie, but one-hit wonders The Rembrandts
0:06:45 > 0:06:49weren't the only people to record a song about friendship.
0:06:49 > 0:06:53It must be a friends thing because we had a number one
0:06:53 > 0:06:55with I Get By With A Little Help From My Friends
0:06:55 > 0:06:57which again is a one-hit wonder.
0:06:57 > 0:07:01- Why are you bringing this up? - It's got "friends" in the title.
0:07:01 > 0:07:03- You know what they're going to do?- Go on.
0:07:03 > 0:07:05They're going to show a clip of us.
0:07:05 > 0:07:07HE SINGS THE INTRO
0:07:07 > 0:07:12That's right, guys, it's you two singing totally chumtastic anthem
0:07:12 > 0:07:15With A Little Help From My Friends.
0:07:15 > 0:07:19Originally by The Beatles then many years later Sam and Mark ruined it.
0:07:19 > 0:07:22Paid us a lot though, so who cares?
0:07:22 > 0:07:26# What would you think if I sang out of tune?
0:07:26 > 0:07:29# Would you stand up and walk out on me?
0:07:29 > 0:07:33Before CBBC stardom beckoned, the boys were pop idols,
0:07:33 > 0:07:36and this was their debut...hit?
0:07:36 > 0:07:37Awful video.
0:07:37 > 0:07:42# I get by with a little help from my friends... #
0:07:42 > 0:07:45- We were moving into a flat together. - Ugh!
0:07:45 > 0:07:47Hey, it was a little cheesy.
0:07:47 > 0:07:48A little cheesy?
0:07:48 > 0:07:53It's more cheesy than a four-cheese pizza with extra cheese.
0:07:53 > 0:07:57I don't know if they moved into that flat together but it was brilliant.
0:07:57 > 0:07:59Sam and Mark aren't the only ones
0:07:59 > 0:08:02who have hit the top spot with this classic song.
0:08:03 > 0:08:05There was Joe Cocker in 1968.
0:08:05 > 0:08:09- # ..a little help from my friends - Yeah, I know!
0:08:09 > 0:08:13# Whoa, I'm gonna keep on trying
0:08:13 > 0:08:15# ..little help from my friends... #
0:08:15 > 0:08:20And then in 1988, Scottish pop stars Wet Wet Wet.
0:08:20 > 0:08:23# Get by with a little help from my friends... #
0:08:23 > 0:08:26In fact there's been at least 50 cover versions
0:08:26 > 0:08:28of this famous friendship anthem.
0:08:28 > 0:08:30# Get by with a little help from my friends... #
0:08:30 > 0:08:33Because we do, we do get by with a little help from our friends.
0:08:33 > 0:08:36And I can to this day say that I get by with a little help
0:08:36 > 0:08:41from my friends, Sam and Mark. Love you, brothers. Love you.
0:08:41 > 0:08:46And from a song that celebrates friendship to a heartfelt ballad
0:08:46 > 0:08:50about how it feels to be an outsider that struck a chord with Rebecca.
0:08:50 > 0:08:54SHE HARMONISES
0:08:54 > 0:08:56When I was 12 or 13, a song that really meant a lot to me
0:08:56 > 0:08:58was Christina Aguilera, Beautiful.
0:08:58 > 0:09:03# Now and then I get insecure... #
0:09:03 > 0:09:08I think the lyrics are so true to how I was feeling at the time.
0:09:08 > 0:09:10I was never physically hurt by bullies
0:09:10 > 0:09:13but there were boys and it's going to happen because of my size.
0:09:13 > 0:09:15They would always say horrible names to me.
0:09:15 > 0:09:17But name-calling does affect you.
0:09:17 > 0:09:21# Words can't bring me down... #
0:09:21 > 0:09:24Christina Aguilera recorded Beautiful in 2002
0:09:24 > 0:09:28and the song's empowering words are all about being strong
0:09:28 > 0:09:32and not letting other people's opinions affect your confidence.
0:09:32 > 0:09:37# You are beautiful no matter what they say
0:09:37 > 0:09:44# Words can't bring you down No, no... #
0:09:44 > 0:09:47No matter who you are, where you are, what you look like,
0:09:47 > 0:09:49you are beautiful and you are you.
0:09:49 > 0:09:51That song really helped me to accept myself.
0:09:51 > 0:09:54I didn't need to change. I didn't need to do anything
0:09:54 > 0:09:56to be a better person or be more accepted.
0:09:57 > 0:10:01# Don't you bring me down today. #
0:10:01 > 0:10:03You're only on this earth once
0:10:03 > 0:10:05and there's no point changing for anyone.
0:10:05 > 0:10:08Be happy in yourself no matter what.
0:10:08 > 0:10:13Still to come, we find out what TV double acts our stars enjoyed.
0:10:13 > 0:10:16Not only did I watch them and think, "Amazing best friends!
0:10:16 > 0:10:20"But they also got to work together which is awesome."
0:10:20 > 0:10:23They have these comedy glasses that they manage to see everything through
0:10:23 > 0:10:25and see it in a different light.
0:10:25 > 0:10:27DONG!
0:10:27 > 0:10:30The two of them wouldn't be the same without each other
0:10:30 > 0:10:33and that's what friendship's all about.
0:10:33 > 0:10:35But first we look at the flip side of friendship
0:10:35 > 0:10:37and what you should do if you're being bullied.
0:10:41 > 0:10:43In secondary school your mind and your body
0:10:43 > 0:10:46are going through a lot of changes and that's when
0:10:46 > 0:10:48people start to become territorial and choosy
0:10:48 > 0:10:52over who they hang out with. That's when bullying can happen.
0:10:52 > 0:10:55I was fodder for bullies at school because I wore glasses.
0:10:55 > 0:10:58That was my ticket to the world of being bullied.
0:10:58 > 0:11:02I had a stammer so it meant that I said the same word over and over
0:11:02 > 0:11:04and I couldn't get my sentences out.
0:11:04 > 0:11:08Because of my stammer it meant that I was bullied and picked on.
0:11:08 > 0:11:13I realise now looking back that I was definitely getting bullied
0:11:13 > 0:11:17but it was kind of disguised by people posing as my friends.
0:11:17 > 0:11:19They'd get me to do their homework for them
0:11:19 > 0:11:21and make fun of me all the time.
0:11:21 > 0:11:25You're so conscious and you want these people to like you.
0:11:25 > 0:11:30You can almost overlook the negativity coming towards you.
0:11:30 > 0:11:33Because I was a sensitive person, if somebody did have a dig at me,
0:11:33 > 0:11:35if somebody called me something,
0:11:35 > 0:11:39they'd probably see it register on my face that it had hurt me,
0:11:39 > 0:11:42so that made it fun for them to have another go.
0:11:42 > 0:11:45My parents are from Iran, not England,
0:11:45 > 0:11:48so it was really hard socially at school.
0:11:48 > 0:11:49I had a funny name as well.
0:11:49 > 0:11:52I got really picked on because of my name.
0:11:52 > 0:11:55Back when Shappi was young, a popular kids' TV drama
0:11:55 > 0:11:59spoke to her about the problems she was facing.
0:12:00 > 0:12:02We used to watch the programme Grange Hill
0:12:02 > 0:12:06and there was a boy called Gripper Stebson who was the bully
0:12:06 > 0:12:07and he was racist.
0:12:07 > 0:12:11In this controversial storyline, Gripper and his gang
0:12:11 > 0:12:14tried to stir up racial tension at the school.
0:12:14 > 0:12:17- All right, Mr Singh? We want a word with you.- No!- In here.
0:12:19 > 0:12:23They intimidated students and victimised black and Asian pupils.
0:12:23 > 0:12:27Mr Singh, what's the big hurry?
0:12:27 > 0:12:29PAPER TEARS
0:12:29 > 0:12:31Thanks, that's my timetable(!)
0:12:31 > 0:12:34But when Gripper picked on one particular pupil...
0:12:34 > 0:12:37You're all freaks, you lot. Aren't they?
0:12:37 > 0:12:38..he was about to meet his match.
0:12:38 > 0:12:41No-one asked you anyway.
0:12:41 > 0:12:44I remember there was a character called Precious Matthews
0:12:44 > 0:12:45and she was a black girl.
0:12:45 > 0:12:47You. Get out.
0:12:47 > 0:12:49I'd rather not stay here.
0:12:49 > 0:12:52Since you came in there's a nasty smell about.
0:12:52 > 0:12:54In my head I was Precious Matthews's best friend.
0:12:54 > 0:12:56I used to get called racist names at school.
0:12:56 > 0:12:58Do you mind?
0:12:58 > 0:13:03I lived in Grange Hill land and she'd stick up for me.
0:13:03 > 0:13:05When Gripper finally pushed Precious too far,
0:13:05 > 0:13:08her response inspired young Shappi.
0:13:15 > 0:13:18Sticking up for yourself is a life skill.
0:13:18 > 0:13:20You've just ruined my map, you pig.
0:13:20 > 0:13:22When you're a kid it's kind of hard.
0:13:22 > 0:13:26You get something straight, you pathetic little runt.
0:13:26 > 0:13:29You lay one more finger on me
0:13:29 > 0:13:31or make one more remark
0:13:31 > 0:13:33about me being black,
0:13:33 > 0:13:36I'm going to get my brother down here.

0:24:07 > 0:24:09# Let's get ready to rumble... #
0:24:09 > 0:24:10- Come on!- Let's hear you!

0:24:21 > 0:24:24and, even now, they still live three doors apart.
0:24:24 > 0:24:26Whenever you watch them, they have fun, which is amazing.
0:24:26 > 0:24:29Which is what friendship is about - not taking yourself too seriously
0:24:29 > 0:24:31and acting like a wally in front of each other.
0:24:34 > 0:24:36I think they'll be in a nursing home together,
0:24:36 > 0:24:38holding each other's hands, going, "We had a laugh, didn't we?
0:24:38 > 0:24:42"We had a laugh!" Yeah, they're awesome to watch on TV, definitely.
0:24:42 > 0:24:44The chemistry - that is brilliant.
0:24:44 > 0:24:46# Watch us wreck the mic Watch us wreck the mic
0:24:46 > 0:24:48# Psych! #
0:24:48 > 0:24:50CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
0:24:50 > 0:24:54Now that's what you call chemistry.
0:24:54 > 0:24:58But what do our celebs think is the formula for a perfect friendship?
0:24:58 > 0:25:02A good friend is somebody who is there for you, no matter what.
0:25:02 > 0:25:05Just someone that's funny, that you can have a good laugh with and,
0:25:05 > 0:25:09you know, stay up late and have girly sleepovers with and watch the telly.
0:25:09 > 0:25:11Your friends are your lifeline.
0:25:11 > 0:25:14When you've invested in someone and they've invested in you,
0:25:14 > 0:25:16you know that they'll be there for you, which is perfect,
0:25:16 > 0:25:17it's a perfect friendship.
0:25:17 > 0:25:20If you're going through anything bad in your life,
0:25:20 > 0:25:24usually friends are the person that can bring you out of that.
0:25:24 > 0:25:27And, if you're being bullied, what advice can they give?
0:25:27 > 0:25:30What I always did was tell my parents, you know?
0:25:30 > 0:25:32What I always did was tell my teachers and stuff.
0:25:32 > 0:25:35And that wouldn't necessarily make you any more popular
0:25:35 > 0:25:37but it helped a bit. You know?
0:25:37 > 0:25:39It meant at least somebody had your back.
0:25:39 > 0:25:41I think telling a teacher is always the scariest thing
0:25:41 > 0:25:42because you don't want...
0:25:42 > 0:25:46You kind of don't want the bully to be mad at you.
0:25:46 > 0:25:48But, actually, they're just scared as well
0:25:48 > 0:25:51and the moment that you tell someone, they often just stop.
0:25:51 > 0:25:55In my experience, I felt that bullies are more...
0:25:55 > 0:25:58more insecure with themself rather than them picking on you.
0:25:58 > 0:26:00So you've got to think that, "It's nothing to do with me,
0:26:00 > 0:26:03"it's obviously an insecurity that they have themself."
0:26:03 > 0:26:07And what advice would they give to their 12-year-old selves?
0:26:07 > 0:26:08To anyone who's 12 at the moment,
0:26:08 > 0:26:11I would tell them to try and be themselves.
0:26:11 > 0:26:13It's really hard, cos when you meet loads of new people
0:26:13 > 0:26:16and you are in a different scenario, you want to be like them.
0:26:16 > 0:26:18But you've got to remember that all of those people
0:26:18 > 0:26:20are also scared and are trying to be like you.
0:26:20 > 0:26:23So if you can just be yourself and just be, I don't know,
0:26:23 > 0:26:26loud with it, confident with it and happy with it,
0:26:26 > 0:26:29then I think that's the best bit of advice I could give.
0:26:29 > 0:26:31Just be nice to people.
0:26:31 > 0:26:34And then 99% of people will be nice back.
0:26:34 > 0:26:37And the 1% that aren't nice to you,
0:26:37 > 0:26:39they're not worth worrying about anyway.
0:26:39 > 0:26:41So if I could tell my 12-year-old self something, I would say,
0:26:41 > 0:26:44"You know these people here? These are your real friends.
0:26:44 > 0:26:46"These guys don't care and you won't see them ever again.
0:26:46 > 0:26:49"As soon as you leave school, they're gone.
0:26:49 > 0:26:50"These people will still be here.
0:26:50 > 0:26:52"So spend more time with people that count."
0:26:52 > 0:26:54Don't fall for peer pressure.
0:26:54 > 0:26:56It's so easy, you know, to go with the flow
0:26:56 > 0:26:59cos you want your friends to think you're cool.
0:26:59 > 0:27:02But, you know, in ten years' time, when you've left school
0:27:02 > 0:27:04and you're out in the real world,
0:27:04 > 0:27:06a lot of these people aren't even going to matter.
0:27:06 > 0:27:10If I was to see the 12-year-old me, I would tell him...
0:27:10 > 0:27:15to keep your good friends close, you know, choose your friends wisely.
0:27:15 > 0:27:18And, if you do, they will become lifelong friends
0:27:18 > 0:27:21and people that will help you and stick with you.
0:27:21 > 0:27:23Ultimately, friends are there
0:27:23 > 0:27:25to support you through thick and thin, aren't they?
0:27:25 > 0:27:28It doesn't matter how thick you get, or how thin you get,
0:27:28 > 0:27:29they'll be there.
0:27:31 > 0:27:32So what have we learned?
0:27:33 > 0:27:37Don't let Hayley Cutts teach you French...
0:27:37 > 0:27:40Haigellaigo. Maigay naigame aigis Haigylaigey.
0:27:40 > 0:27:42..never take a drum lesson off Bert...
0:27:42 > 0:27:44Oh, groove with me, baby!
0:27:45 > 0:27:47Um...
0:27:47 > 0:27:49And never forget this matey musical motto.
0:27:49 > 0:27:52# I'll be there for you
0:27:52 > 0:27:54# Cos you're there for me too
0:27:54 > 0:27:56# Ooh. # SHE LAUGHS
