0:02:35 > 0:02:40British entrepreneur Sir Clive Sinclair was a massive tech pioneer.

0:02:43 > 0:02:44ingenious new forms of transport
0:02:44 > 0:02:48and a TV small enough to fit, well, anywhere!
0:02:49 > 0:02:53But it was when he set his mind on making home computers affordable
0:02:53 > 0:02:56that he had his most genius idea - the ZX80!
0:02:59 > 0:03:02Sinclair was a true British genius, and in the '80s
0:03:02 > 0:03:05Cambridge was the place to be when it came to home computing.
0:03:05 > 0:03:08So where better to find out about his computers than here,
0:03:08 > 0:03:11the Centre For Computing History in Cambridge?
0:03:13 > 0:03:16And to help us learn more about the great man,
0:03:16 > 0:03:19we've got tech queen Lucy Hedges.
0:03:19 > 0:03:22So why was Sir Clive Sinclair so inspirational?
0:03:22 > 0:03:24Well, for many, he was widely regarded as the founding father
0:03:24 > 0:03:26of the British home computing industry,
0:03:26 > 0:03:28for everything that he brought to the industry -
0:03:28 > 0:03:31an affordable computer, programming, gaming.
0:03:31 > 0:03:32That's why he's so inspirational.
0:03:32 > 0:03:34Even his fans call him Uncle Clive, they love him.
0:03:34 > 0:03:36And I think if it wasn't for him
0:03:36 > 0:03:38the industry would be a little bit different.
0:03:38 > 0:03:42- This is the ZX80.- It is!- So why were these so revolutionary?
0:03:42 > 0:03:44Back in the '80s, you know, home computers,
0:03:44 > 0:03:46it was a fairly new concept but they were expensive.
0:03:46 > 0:03:49What the ZX80 did was bring all the features of the rivals
0:03:49 > 0:03:51but for a fraction of the price.
0:03:51 > 0:03:53It was affordable, so for the first time,
0:03:53 > 0:03:56a real computer could be in the home for under £100.
0:03:56 > 0:03:58And if you felt like assembling it yourself,
0:03:58 > 0:03:59saving 20 quid, you could do.
0:03:59 > 0:04:03This is crazy! So you'd be given some metal and plastic.
0:04:03 > 0:04:05- Mmm-hmm.- And then you'd make your own computer
0:04:05 > 0:04:07- and then you design your own games.- Yes.
0:04:08 > 0:04:11Sinclair ZX80 opened up the world of computing
0:04:11 > 0:04:13to loads of people in Britain
0:04:13 > 0:04:16And a year later he refined his invention
0:04:16 > 0:04:18and released the much improved ZX81,
0:04:18 > 0:04:21which you could still build yourself to save cash.
0:04:21 > 0:04:22So there's one thing for it...

0:08:13 > 0:08:18But most of us would identify virtual reality with space-age goggles
0:08:18 > 0:08:20that put us in a digital world.
0:08:20 > 0:08:23Modern virtual reality uses high-tech computer graphics
0:08:23 > 0:08:25and built-in sensors which, by adding in sounds,
0:08:25 > 0:08:29tricks your mind into believing you're in a totally different world.
0:08:29 > 0:08:33Jaron Lanier was a pioneer of virtual reality,
0:08:33 > 0:08:36by creating headsets that were available to the masses.
0:08:36 > 0:08:39His revolutionary thinking over 30 years ago has paved the way
0:08:39 > 0:08:42for a whole new wave of virtual reality headsets
0:08:42 > 0:08:45which will allow you to step into your favourite game.
0:08:45 > 0:08:48Now he's invited us here to his top research laboratory

0:09:15 > 0:09:19Sure. Virtual reality is when you see stuff generated by a computer
0:09:19 > 0:09:22and it seems like it's real, except it isn't.
0:09:22 > 0:09:24And usually you experience it because you wear
0:09:24 > 0:09:27these special goggles, and sometimes you wear weird gloves.
0:09:27 > 0:09:29But the computer creates stuff,
0:09:29 > 0:09:32kind of like video game stuff except it seems real in front of you.

0:09:33 > 0:09:36So what is the future, then, for virtual reality?
0:09:36 > 0:09:38Well, this is a really amazing moment for virtual reality.
0:09:38 > 0:09:40All of a sudden we're about to see a world where
0:09:40 > 0:09:42there are products that people can buy.
0:09:44 > 0:09:47Most of the major computer and tech companies have been busy
0:09:47 > 0:09:50working on their own versions of virtual reality gaming,
0:09:50 > 0:09:52available to buy in 2016.
0:09:54 > 0:09:57Do you know what? Talking about it has got us excited enough,

0:10:21 > 0:10:25and can put us and the objects we are using into our virtual reality.
