0:00:27 > 0:00:30and see how they perform under pressure during a match.

0:00:30 > 0:00:34They'll also talk tactics with an experienced player turned manager,

0:00:34 > 0:00:36which is handy, as one wants to be a player

0:00:36 > 0:00:38and the other wants to become a manager.

0:00:38 > 0:00:40But are they hot prospects

0:00:40 > 0:00:42or are they merely going to be benchwarmers?

0:00:42 > 0:00:46Let's find out as we go All Over The Workplace!

0:01:06 > 0:01:09We're about to meet a young footballer who wants to

0:01:09 > 0:01:12bend it like Beckham, and a wannabe football manager who wants to

0:01:12 > 0:01:15win more silverware than Sir Alex Ferguson -

0:01:15 > 0:01:17two rookies with two massive ambitions.

0:01:22 > 0:01:24I want to be a footballer.

0:01:24 > 0:01:27I can play on my right foot but I'm more confident on my left foot.

0:01:27 > 0:01:29I try to keep my football life and my school life separate.

0:01:29 > 0:01:31I still focus on my work and get my head down,

0:01:31 > 0:01:33but I do love football, obviously.

0:01:33 > 0:01:37I'm a very determined footballer and I want to get where I want to be,

0:01:37 > 0:01:39which is to be a professional footballer and play for England.

0:01:43 > 0:01:44I want to be a football manager.

0:01:44 > 0:01:47My plan is to become a professional footballer.

0:01:47 > 0:01:50Once I've retired I want to be a successful manager.

0:01:50 > 0:01:54I watch a lot of football and assess the different formations

0:01:54 > 0:01:56and positions that people play.

0:01:56 > 0:01:58I think I could be better than Cristiano Ronaldo.

0:01:58 > 0:02:00I can't wait to show you what I'm made of.

0:02:00 > 0:02:03Freya and Chitua think they're dominant on their home turf,

0:02:03 > 0:02:06but how will they handle away games?

0:02:06 > 0:02:08They've travelled to Ipswich to team up with Alex.

0:02:08 > 0:02:11Now, I hear that you guys want to make a career

0:02:11 > 0:02:15- in professional football.- Yeah.- Now, what do you love about football?

0:02:15 > 0:02:18I've always wanted to do something that I love when I'm older

0:02:18 > 0:02:19and I love football,

0:02:19 > 0:02:21so it would be nice to go to work every day and enjoy it.

0:02:21 > 0:02:24- And what about you, Chitua? You want to be a manager?- Yeah.

0:02:24 > 0:02:26Why do you think that would be a great thing to do?

0:02:26 > 0:02:29Because I'm always watching football and I always want to experience,

0:02:29 > 0:02:34like, playing the tactics on my team and leading them to success.

0:02:34 > 0:02:37Right, OK. That's what you think, here's what your parents think.

0:02:37 > 0:02:40Freya's football mad, I think it's always been that way,

0:02:40 > 0:02:43I can't think of a time when it wasn't like that.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46Losing isn't really in Freya's vocabulary.

0:02:46 > 0:02:47She doesn't like to lose.

0:02:47 > 0:02:50He just loves athletics and loves football.

0:02:50 > 0:02:54He's very charismatic, even with his mates. They listen to him.

0:02:54 > 0:02:58- He's a leader.- When Chitua doesn't win a game, he can be quite moody.

0:02:58 > 0:03:01So, Chitua, you are a leader who doesn't like to follow others,

0:03:01 > 0:03:05but will you be prepared to take the advice of the experts?

0:03:05 > 0:03:07If it's good advice, then I'll take it.

0:03:07 > 0:03:11But if it's advice when I don't need it, then I won't take it.

0:03:11 > 0:03:13OK, you know your own mind, it seems.

0:03:13 > 0:03:14And Freya, you're a bad loser.

0:03:14 > 0:03:17Now, in football, there's going to be games that you lose

0:03:17 > 0:03:20and you've got to keep positive and keep going.

0:03:20 > 0:03:21Will you be able to do that?

0:03:21 > 0:03:23Yeah, I'll just try my hardest in every game and bring

0:03:23 > 0:03:26- the right attitude to each game. - Well, that's enough chatting.

0:03:26 > 0:03:28Let's go and see what we're going to be doing.

0:03:28 > 0:03:31Being a professional footballer looks like a brilliant job.

0:03:31 > 0:03:34You just have to kick a ball around for 90 minutes.

0:03:34 > 0:03:36Of course, you need to be physically fit

0:03:36 > 0:03:39and have the right skills to succeed.

0:03:41 > 0:03:43What's she doing down there?!

0:03:46 > 0:03:48Right, here we are at Ipswich Town Football Club.

0:03:48 > 0:03:51Now, you probably think you're going to be playing football.

0:03:51 > 0:03:54Well, you're kind of right, but there's a lot more to it than that.

0:03:54 > 0:03:55So come on, let's go inside.

0:03:57 > 0:03:59Rookies Freya and Chitua are going to

0:03:59 > 0:04:01run out at the home of Ipswich Town.

0:04:01 > 0:04:05Ipswich sprang to life in 1878 and they are still the only

0:04:05 > 0:04:08professional football club in Suffolk.

0:04:08 > 0:04:11The pinnacle of their long history was in 1981

0:04:11 > 0:04:13when they lifted the UEFA Cup.

0:04:13 > 0:04:16In their heyday they won the League Title, as well as adding

0:04:16 > 0:04:19the FA Cup to the trophy cabinet.

0:04:19 > 0:04:23Simon Milton is a bit of a legend at Ipswich Town.

0:04:23 > 0:04:26He's been at the club for over 28 years, 12 as a player

0:04:26 > 0:04:29and 16 since hanging up his boots.

0:04:29 > 0:04:32He's now a club ambassador and loves nothing more than watching

0:04:32 > 0:04:36young talent developing through the ranks into first-team players.

0:04:36 > 0:04:39Simon, what would your top three tips be for becoming

0:04:39 > 0:04:40a professional footballer?

0:04:40 > 0:04:43There's the technical side, which means your talent,

0:04:43 > 0:04:46how good you are and making sure you practise constantly.

0:04:46 > 0:04:49Then there's the physical side, which means you've got to be fit and

0:04:49 > 0:04:52strong, you've got to be healthy, you've got to eat the right foods.

0:04:52 > 0:04:54And then there's the mental side - even at this age

0:04:54 > 0:04:57they've got to get their head around the fact that they'll be trying to

0:04:57 > 0:05:00become professional footballers and have the discipline that you need.

0:05:04 > 0:05:06Talent - this isn't just about natural ability.

0:05:06 > 0:05:09You've got to practise regularly to refine your skills.

0:05:09 > 0:05:12Physique - a well-planned training regime and diet

0:05:12 > 0:05:14are critical in developing into a top player.

0:05:14 > 0:05:18And discipline - becoming a professional footballer

0:05:18 > 0:05:20means giving up other aspects of your life,

0:05:20 > 0:05:22so you really have to be in it to win it.

0:05:22 > 0:05:24How many nights a week do you train?

0:05:24 > 0:05:27The Academy boys and girls, we see them four times a week,

0:05:27 > 0:05:30so we see them midweek and we see them at weekends.

0:05:30 > 0:05:32The first team will train just about every day.

0:05:32 > 0:05:35When you're playing games on Saturday, Tuesday,

0:05:35 > 0:05:37Saturday, Tuesday, they don't get many days off.

0:05:37 > 0:05:40Is it like a squad rotation or do you have,

0:05:40 > 0:05:44- like, a set time for when people play?- That's a really good question.

0:05:44 > 0:05:45The players just want to play.

0:05:45 > 0:05:47If you look around here and the kit that's laid out here,

0:05:47 > 0:05:49there's 21 names.

0:05:49 > 0:05:52There's only 11 that start the game, there's then seven that are

0:05:52 > 0:05:55substitutes and every single one of them wants to play the game.

0:05:55 > 0:05:58The manager will pick the team based on what he's seen in training

0:05:58 > 0:06:01all week, based on what he saw at the last game

0:06:01 > 0:06:03and also looking at the opposition.

0:06:03 > 0:06:07But all the players arrive for every game hoping to play.

0:06:14 > 0:06:16Football is the world's most popular sport.

0:06:16 > 0:06:22About 1 billion people tuned in to watch the 2014 World Cup final.

0:06:22 > 0:06:26That's the equivalent of filling Wembley Stadium 11,000 times over.

0:06:29 > 0:06:31Chelsea's ex-manager Jose Mourinho was the highest-paid

0:06:31 > 0:06:35Premiership football manager in the 2014/15 season,

0:06:35 > 0:06:38earning a whopping £12.7 million.

0:06:38 > 0:06:41The highest-paid player is Cristiano Ronaldo.

0:06:41 > 0:06:44He banks a mind-boggling £60 million a year.

0:06:44 > 0:06:46Lend us a tenner, Cristiano!

0:06:46 > 0:06:50Mrs Graham's XI from Stirling in Scotland are thought to be

0:06:50 > 0:06:54the first women's football team in Britain, and sparked riots

0:06:54 > 0:06:58after they beat England 3-1 in their second ever match in 1881.

0:06:58 > 0:07:01Now there are more women playing than ever before,

0:07:01 > 0:07:05with a 54% increase in registered female pros since the year 2000.

0:07:05 > 0:07:07Go, girls!

0:07:07 > 0:07:10Mark Kennedy enjoyed a successful playing career,

0:07:10 > 0:07:14with time at Liverpool, Man City, Cardiff City and Crystal Palace,

0:07:14 > 0:07:18as well as playing internationally for the Republic of Ireland.

0:07:18 > 0:07:21He's now responsible for developing young talent,

0:07:21 > 0:07:24as he's the under-21 manager at Ipswich Town.

0:07:24 > 0:07:26So Mark, what are your top three tips for becoming

0:07:26 > 0:07:27a professional footballer?

0:07:27 > 0:07:29OK, number one, you have to enjoy every day.

0:07:29 > 0:07:32Enjoy what you're doing, enjoys your training.

0:07:32 > 0:07:35Number two, you've got to practise very, very hard every day,

0:07:35 > 0:07:38and number three, which is really important, don't ever waste a day.

0:07:41 > 0:07:45Enjoy every day - great for team spirit and drive.

0:07:45 > 0:07:49Practise every day - after all, practise makes perfect.

0:07:49 > 0:07:52And never waste a day - if you don't work hard,

0:07:52 > 0:07:55you won't develop as a player.

0:07:55 > 0:07:58So what have you got in store for Freya and Chitua?

0:07:58 > 0:08:00OK, we're going to do a passing drill which will concentrate on all

0:08:00 > 0:08:02the little things that players take for granted,

0:08:02 > 0:08:06like being side on, looking over your shoulder, your forward touch.

0:08:06 > 0:08:08Two balls we're working, OK? Away you go.

0:08:08 > 0:08:13Pass and follow. Back to Chitua. Lovely, really like that, well done.

0:08:13 > 0:08:16Well done, Freya. If we can go left foot, right foot,

0:08:16 > 0:08:18right foot, left foot.

0:08:18 > 0:08:22Well done, Chitua. Well done, Freya, really good, Freya, I like it!

0:08:22 > 0:08:24Passing is an essential part of playing the game.

0:08:24 > 0:08:28Professional football players often practise drills like this

0:08:28 > 0:08:31to brush up their technical skills and improve their sharpness.

0:08:31 > 0:08:34Wait, wait, there you go! And I'll come in and close you down...

0:08:34 > 0:08:37Oh, no, you're gone! Well done.

0:08:37 > 0:08:39Good stuff. Well done, Freya.

0:08:39 > 0:08:42I'm coming to close you down, I'm coming to get you, Chitua!

0:08:42 > 0:08:44Well done, you got there, you beat me.

0:08:45 > 0:08:48Is that you, Freya? Well done! I like it!

0:08:48 > 0:08:51A little nice sharp one and I'll come to close it down

0:08:51 > 0:08:53and you've gone again, well done.

0:08:54 > 0:08:56I'm coming to close you down, Freya!

0:08:56 > 0:08:59Oh, and there you go, you beat me, lovely.

0:08:59 > 0:09:02You've pulled off, I've come to close you down,

0:09:02 > 0:09:03oh, well done, I like it.

0:09:03 > 0:09:05Freya, Chitua!

0:09:05 > 0:09:08After an impressive looking training drill, a few first team players

0:09:08 > 0:09:11have dropped by for a chat with the rookies.

0:09:11 > 0:09:14So that was just one small session you've done there.

0:09:14 > 0:09:16We're in usually four or five days a week,

0:09:16 > 0:09:19practising all different exercises like your passing drills,

0:09:19 > 0:09:21your shooting drills. It can be quite tough.

0:09:21 > 0:09:23- So have you got lots more energy? - BOTH: Yeah.

0:09:23 > 0:09:26- You sure you can do that four or five times a week?- BOTH: Yeah.- Good.

0:09:26 > 0:09:29Freya and Chitua are both 12. Freya wants to be a player.

0:09:29 > 0:09:31Chitua wants to be a player and then he wants to be a manager.

0:09:31 > 0:09:35Have you got any advice for them at this stage in their careers?

0:09:35 > 0:09:36Just never give up.

0:09:36 > 0:09:38Yeah, always give 100%, always believe in yourself.

0:09:38 > 0:09:41If you don't work hard and make the most of every training session

0:09:41 > 0:09:45or every time you play football, then you are basically throwing away

0:09:45 > 0:09:48your talent, because 90% effort is 100% failure.

0:09:48 > 0:09:50- What do you think about female footballers?- Why not? It's great.

0:09:50 > 0:09:52Watched a lot of the World Cup in the summer -

0:09:52 > 0:09:54you look like you wouldn't go out of place there,

0:09:54 > 0:09:56you look very good.

0:09:56 > 0:09:58Hang on, I think the manager's shouting for you.

0:09:58 > 0:10:00I think that's it.

0:10:00 > 0:10:02Come over here!

0:10:02 > 0:10:04The assignment was really fun

0:10:04 > 0:10:06because Mark was a really good coach.

0:10:06 > 0:10:09I learned from Mark just to never give up, and even if you slip back

0:10:09 > 0:10:11at one point, you've got to get up and try again.

0:10:11 > 0:10:14Meeting the first team players was really nice as they were really

0:10:14 > 0:10:16friendly and, like, they told you never give up

0:10:16 > 0:10:20because one of them got released but then he kept on playing football

0:10:20 > 0:10:22and never gave up and he ended up at Ipswich.

0:10:22 > 0:10:25Hello, Freya. So for you today, I was very impressed with

0:10:25 > 0:10:27your left foot. You've got an excellent left foot and that was

0:10:27 > 0:10:30a pleasure watching you. But what I'd like you to do is

0:10:30 > 0:10:32to concentrate a little bit more on your right foot,

0:10:32 > 0:10:35so keep working every day on the left, but we don't forget about

0:10:35 > 0:10:38our right and then we'll have a very, very good two-footed player.

0:10:38 > 0:10:41Chitua, yours was really easy today, I thought you were technically

0:10:41 > 0:10:44very good with both feet, so I want you to continue doing that

0:10:44 > 0:10:46and my only little thing, my little add-on, is that you've got

0:10:46 > 0:10:48an excellent first touch.

0:10:48 > 0:10:51Can we complement that by putting the ball in the back of the net?

0:10:55 > 0:10:58My tips to young footballers would be practise hard,

0:10:58 > 0:11:02enjoy the game, try and dribble a lot, pass the ball, enjoy it.

0:11:02 > 0:11:05My advice would be, never cut any corners,

0:11:05 > 0:11:08always give your best, but more importantly, just enjoy it

0:11:08 > 0:11:10cos it's a game of football and it's fun.

0:11:10 > 0:11:14Andy Liddell is Ipswich FC's fitness coach.

0:11:14 > 0:11:17During his playing career he played for Wigan Athletic

0:11:17 > 0:11:19and Sheffield United amongst others.

0:11:19 > 0:11:23But now he's responsible for the Ipswich Town squad's fitness levels.

0:11:23 > 0:11:26He needs to keep them in tiptop condition throughout the season

0:11:26 > 0:11:28and that's not only about exercise.

0:11:28 > 0:11:32How important is the food to a professional footballer?

0:11:32 > 0:11:34Well, it's massive.

0:11:34 > 0:11:37The players burn a lot of calories when they're training and playing,

0:11:37 > 0:11:40there's a lot of matches, so they need fuel to recover from the energy

0:11:40 > 0:11:43that they're using, and that's where the diet comes in, really.

0:11:43 > 0:11:46This is lunch, so what would be the first thing you do think you

0:11:46 > 0:11:47would like to eat for lunch?

0:11:49 > 0:11:52- Pasta.- Yeah.- Why?- It's carbohydrates.- Fantastic, fantastic.

0:11:52 > 0:11:55- Yeah, brilliant.- It's quite a slow release energy.- Yes.

0:11:55 > 0:11:58Pasta is fantastic because it's full of carbohydrates and the

0:11:58 > 0:12:01players burn a lot of carbohydrates, so it's the main staple of the diet.

0:12:01 > 0:12:04- There's other things like protein, which is the...- Fish.

0:12:04 > 0:12:06When you're playing football, running around a lot

0:12:06 > 0:12:09and playing games, the muscles are getting really damaged

0:12:09 > 0:12:12and need repairing and you can repair them with rest

0:12:12 > 0:12:14and you can repair them with recovery,

0:12:14 > 0:12:17but you can also repair them with foods like fish and proteins.

0:12:17 > 0:12:22- Do you eat that?- No. - Do you eat that?- No.- Because?

0:12:22 > 0:12:24- Cos they're fatty. - Because they ARE fatty, yeah.

0:12:24 > 0:12:27Would you have maybe a fruit for pudding, over the chocolate?

0:12:27 > 0:12:30- BOTH: Yeah.- Because you're getting good vitamins out of them as well,

0:12:30 > 0:12:32that's fantastic. And the potatoes as well.

0:12:32 > 0:12:35How fast do you think you should have something to drink after you've

0:12:35 > 0:12:38- finished a match?- Quite soon after. - Straight away.- Yeah. Straight away,

0:12:38 > 0:12:41cos you could lose anything between 1.5 and 2 kilos

0:12:41 > 0:12:44in a match. A lot of that is fluid, so say you've got a one-litre bottle

0:12:44 > 0:12:47of water, how many of those do you think you would need

0:12:47 > 0:12:50- to drink afterwards?- Two. - Between one and maybe two.

0:12:50 > 0:12:52Yeah. Two to three, maybe.

0:12:52 > 0:12:55- During the match, do you think it's good to drink?- Take little sips.

0:12:55 > 0:12:57Yeah, take little sips, yeah, perfect.

0:12:57 > 0:12:59I'm actually feeling a bit peckish now.

0:12:59 > 0:13:01Thank you very much for that, that's very interesting.

0:13:01 > 0:13:04Obviously there's more to football than just kicking a ball around

0:13:04 > 0:13:06and eating the right food, isn't there?

0:13:06 > 0:13:07Let's go and see what else we can find out.

0:13:07 > 0:13:09- See you later.- Thanks very much. - No problem.

0:13:14 > 0:13:17Any young kid who has got aspirations of being

0:13:17 > 0:13:20a football player, it's now, at 12 years of age,

0:13:20 > 0:13:23that you have to make sure that you start to eat properly,

0:13:23 > 0:13:28live properly, sleep properly, rest properly, and again, work hard.

0:13:29 > 0:13:32Mick McCarthy is the manager at Ipswich Town.

0:13:32 > 0:13:34He moved into management after a career

0:13:34 > 0:13:38playing for Man City, Celtic and others.

0:13:38 > 0:13:41Mick has managed for both club and country, and even led

0:13:41 > 0:13:45the Republic of Ireland into the last 16 in the 2002 World Cup.

0:13:45 > 0:13:49What would your top three tips be for becoming a football manager?

0:13:49 > 0:13:52I got my first job when I was 32,

0:13:52 > 0:13:55and the best thing I ever did was get a good assistant.

0:13:55 > 0:13:59That was Ian Evans, known as Ian "Taff" Evans.

0:13:59 > 0:14:03Just slightly older but more mature and somebody who can just

0:14:03 > 0:14:04pull you back now and again.

0:14:04 > 0:14:06Go and do all your coaching badges,

0:14:06 > 0:14:09that's very, very important. Be very diligent in that.

0:14:09 > 0:14:13If you get the job, you've got to manage everybody - manage above you,

0:14:13 > 0:14:15which is your chairman or your president or your owner,

0:14:15 > 0:14:18you got to manage all your staff, you got to manage all your players

0:14:18 > 0:14:22and I would say, be approachable to everybody, have a bit of empathy

0:14:22 > 0:14:24with them, have a bit of feeling for them,

0:14:24 > 0:14:25cos they'll all work hard for you.

0:14:25 > 0:14:29What advice would you give to your 12-year-old self?

0:14:29 > 0:14:3112-year-old self?!

0:14:31 > 0:14:34Probably do better at school, I think.

0:14:34 > 0:14:37I think I spent too much time trying to play football.

0:14:37 > 0:14:40Hey, look, it's turned out good for me.

0:14:40 > 0:14:44But I can tell you, hundreds of children go every year,

0:14:44 > 0:14:46coming in at eights, nines, tens

0:14:46 > 0:14:49and there's a cull almost at eight, nine, ten,

0:14:49 > 0:14:5211, 12, until 16, until they come into my office and we sign them,

0:14:52 > 0:14:55and 18 still I might let them go.

0:14:55 > 0:14:59So to myself - do better at school, be better with your education.

0:14:59 > 0:15:03- What's the hardest part of being a manager?- Losing!

0:15:03 > 0:15:05And dealing with everything after losing.

0:15:05 > 0:15:07When we're winning, you just come into work,

0:15:07 > 0:15:10everybody's got a smile on their face, nothing seems to be

0:15:10 > 0:15:13a chore, the players come in and everybody is chirpy and full of it.

0:15:13 > 0:15:16When we're losing, it is the polar opposite.

0:15:16 > 0:15:18So the toughest part is when we've lost, and trying to be

0:15:18 > 0:15:21all those things that we are when we're winning.

0:15:21 > 0:15:24Do you have any superstitions?

0:15:24 > 0:15:27I always say no - touch wood.

0:15:27 > 0:15:30What's your favourite formation?

0:15:30 > 0:15:33- Probably 4-3-3.- Oh, yeah?

0:15:33 > 0:15:36Go on, then, you be the blues then and put the 4-3-3 there for me.

0:15:38 > 0:15:42- Probably like that.- Yeah? And what's your favourite formation, then?

0:15:42 > 0:15:43Mine was 4-3-3.

0:15:44 > 0:15:46So I'll ask you, then, Freya.

0:15:46 > 0:15:48If that's me and you managing the blues,

0:15:48 > 0:15:52do you think we might be a bit wide open in the middle of the pitch?

0:15:52 > 0:15:55I know, because then if they get the ball into this space, then yeah.

0:15:55 > 0:15:57But they've also got the support at the back,

0:15:57 > 0:16:00- so just bring them in a bit. - If it was me...

0:16:00 > 0:16:05I'd have them probably there and these would start up here.

0:16:05 > 0:16:08And maybe come and play in here with the centre forward,

0:16:08 > 0:16:10- is that where they'd be?- Yeah.

0:16:10 > 0:16:13And so, Chitua, you want to be the manager.

0:16:13 > 0:16:15How are you going to play against your 4-3-3?

0:16:15 > 0:16:17I'd push that up there and then him there.

0:16:19 > 0:16:22And if he's playing here, then, for the blues,

0:16:22 > 0:16:24is a centre back going to look after him?

0:16:24 > 0:16:29- Yeah, centre backs are going to come inside.- So we play 4-4-2.

0:16:29 > 0:16:31I wonder where you think you can hurt us.

0:16:31 > 0:16:33- Him to push up here...- Yeah.

0:16:33 > 0:16:37..and then him to give him support with the left-centre mid.

0:16:37 > 0:16:40- Yeah.- And then him to push up there, then him giving him

0:16:40 > 0:16:44support with the right-centre mid, then he would be here.

0:16:44 > 0:16:45That's your centre forward.

0:16:45 > 0:16:48Move into the centre box and then the sitter would, like,

0:16:48 > 0:16:51control the centre, watching those two.

0:16:51 > 0:16:53And then they would push it a bit.

0:16:53 > 0:16:55Well, you got a team that works hard, then, haven't you?

0:16:55 > 0:16:57You're doing OK.

0:16:57 > 0:17:00Football is risk versus reward.

0:17:00 > 0:17:05You have to be adaptable and flexible and so...

0:17:05 > 0:17:08"What I wanted to do today is not working,

0:17:08 > 0:17:10"I'm going to have to change that."

0:17:10 > 0:17:12So I've set up a final task for you.

0:17:12 > 0:17:15There's going to be a game - you're going to be playing left-wing.

0:17:15 > 0:17:17Chitua, you're going to be managing.

0:17:17 > 0:17:20Good luck with the game, managing.

0:17:20 > 0:17:23- And good luck with the game with playing.- Thank you.

0:17:23 > 0:17:26And before you go, we'll go down to the boot room.

0:17:26 > 0:17:29Do you know what we're supposed to be doing?

0:17:29 > 0:17:31- Pick a pair of boots and follow me.- OK.

0:17:36 > 0:17:38- We're not cleaning them, are we? - Yeah.

0:17:38 > 0:17:40- Part of paying your dues?- Yeah.

0:17:40 > 0:17:41OK. Give us a brush, then.

0:17:44 > 0:17:46How often do you have to clean the boots?

0:17:46 > 0:17:48Whenever the boots are worn, after a match day,

0:17:48 > 0:17:51they would come back on the Saturday, and on the Monday morning

0:17:51 > 0:17:54we'd be in to clean the boots and then off into education.

0:17:54 > 0:17:57And after every training session, when the players are finishing,

0:17:57 > 0:18:01we come in - before we go to lunch we'd have to clean the boots again.

0:18:04 > 0:18:07Yeah, this is an everyday occurrence for us, water in the face.

0:18:07 > 0:18:10All down your legs, it's never nice.

0:18:10 > 0:18:12I've been at the club for seven years,

0:18:12 > 0:18:13I was under-11s when I joined.

0:18:13 > 0:18:16And so what happens next for you?

0:18:16 > 0:18:19Either I'd get a third-year scholar,

0:18:19 > 0:18:22- a professional contract or I'd be let go by the club.- They're done.

0:18:22 > 0:18:24All right, brilliant, thank you very much.

0:18:24 > 0:18:26The assignment is a brand-new experience to me

0:18:26 > 0:18:29because I haven't looked at formations that deeply before.

0:18:29 > 0:18:31When Mick told me about my last assignment about playing

0:18:31 > 0:18:34a match and Chitua being the manager, I got really excited,

0:18:34 > 0:18:37because we get to play some football and Chitua can have a go too.

0:18:37 > 0:18:40The best thing has been meeting Mick, as he told me

0:18:40 > 0:18:43the different formations that he would choose and the one

0:18:43 > 0:18:46he likes the best, and what he would do in different scenarios.

0:18:46 > 0:18:49I had to think on my feet and think about the different things

0:18:49 > 0:18:52I would do in the positions that I'd put certain people.

0:18:52 > 0:18:55Freya, I can quite clearly see you have a love for football.

0:18:55 > 0:18:57I love the fact that you're flexible,

0:18:57 > 0:18:59left-wing going on the outside,

0:18:59 > 0:19:02right-wing going on the inside with your left foot,

0:19:02 > 0:19:06and understanding actually the game, so stay with it, enjoy it

0:19:06 > 0:19:09and I wish you the very best of luck

0:19:09 > 0:19:11and I hope you become a pro player with somebody.

0:19:11 > 0:19:14Chitua, quite clearly you have a grasp of the tactics

0:19:14 > 0:19:16and you know what you want to do.

0:19:16 > 0:19:18If you ever do get a job as a manager,

0:19:18 > 0:19:21you need to know what you want, then you need to implement it

0:19:21 > 0:19:24and get other people in who can implement it for you.

0:19:24 > 0:19:27And I think if you take that into your career,

0:19:27 > 0:19:29hopefully as a footballer like you want to play

0:19:29 > 0:19:32but then as a manager, then you'll have a good chance

0:19:32 > 0:19:33and I wish you well with it.

0:19:39 > 0:19:42Football is an enormously complex world.

0:19:42 > 0:19:45Along with the millions of amateurs and professionals who actually play

0:19:45 > 0:19:50the game, an army of people work in a huge variety of associated jobs.

0:19:50 > 0:19:52Take the nutritionist.

0:19:52 > 0:19:54You are what you eat, you know.

0:19:54 > 0:19:57It's no secret that eating the correct food can make

0:19:57 > 0:20:00the difference between failure and success.

0:20:00 > 0:20:02Stamina and power can be increased

0:20:02 > 0:20:04by eating the right things at the right time.

0:20:05 > 0:20:08Agents now play a huge role in most sports.

0:20:08 > 0:20:11The agent will negotiate contracts on behalf of the sporting staff

0:20:11 > 0:20:13to get the best deal.

0:20:14 > 0:20:18Top football clubs also employ scouts.

0:20:18 > 0:20:21They get their name because they scout out top up-and-coming talent,

0:20:21 > 0:20:24so they need to have an eye for potential.

0:20:24 > 0:20:27Oh, aye. He looks a bit tasty.

0:20:27 > 0:20:30Boss, I think I've found that midfielder you're looking for.

0:20:30 > 0:20:31CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:20:35 > 0:20:38Hi, my name's Rachel Yankey, and I play football for Arsenal

0:20:38 > 0:20:39and England.

0:20:39 > 0:20:43My three top tips for being a football player are one,

0:20:43 > 0:20:44make sure you enjoy yourself.

0:20:44 > 0:20:46You've got to have fun on the football pitch.

0:20:46 > 0:20:48Two, work as a team.

0:20:48 > 0:20:51No matter whether you win or lose, you've got to work together.

0:20:51 > 0:20:55And three, make sure you stay healthy. Keep yourself nice and fit.

0:20:55 > 0:20:56Good luck, guys!

0:20:56 > 0:20:59It's nearly time for the big match,

0:20:59 > 0:21:02and who better to give our rookies some words of wisdom than

0:21:02 > 0:21:05ex-Northern Ireland international Bryan Hamilton?

0:21:05 > 0:21:08After a successful career as a player, he turned to management

0:21:08 > 0:21:11and managed sides including Norwich and Leicester.

0:21:11 > 0:21:14He even managed his national team, Northern Ireland.

0:21:14 > 0:21:17He's been in the football business for over 50 years,

0:21:17 > 0:21:20so he knows a thing or two.

0:21:20 > 0:21:22Bryan, what three top tips would you give our rookies for becoming

0:21:22 > 0:21:24a professional footballer?

0:21:24 > 0:21:26Well, I think being a professional footballer is the best

0:21:26 > 0:21:29job in the world, and I think you've got to start off by really

0:21:29 > 0:21:30loving the game.

0:21:30 > 0:21:33You've got to love playing, you've got to love training,

0:21:33 > 0:21:36and then once you've got that love and passion for the game,

0:21:36 > 0:21:37you must never stop improving.

0:21:37 > 0:21:39You must want to work, you want to practise,

0:21:39 > 0:21:42you want to keep improving. You want to be the best you can be.

0:21:42 > 0:21:43It's a fantastic profession,

0:21:43 > 0:21:46and you'll love being a professional footballer.

0:21:46 > 0:21:48There are your top tips for playing?

0:21:48 > 0:21:49What are your top tips for managing?

0:21:49 > 0:21:53Management is all about winning matches, so help the player is the

0:21:53 > 0:21:58first part, help to create a team, and then get a winning mentality.

0:21:58 > 0:22:01OK, so, Freya, you're going to playing in the final match.

0:22:01 > 0:22:02We're going to manage.

0:22:02 > 0:22:05I'm going to meet with Chitua and we're going to see you here,

0:22:05 > 0:22:07so Freya, you go off to the dressing rooms, get ready.

0:22:07 > 0:22:09Remember what you've learned.

0:22:09 > 0:22:11Lots of good stretching. Make sure you're ready to play.

0:22:11 > 0:22:14Chitua, let's go and get this team ready.

0:22:14 > 0:22:17As Freya's getting kitted up, Bryan and Chitua talk tactics.

0:22:17 > 0:22:20Tonight's match is a seven-a-side, so they'll need to

0:22:20 > 0:22:22take that into account when picking their formations.

0:22:22 > 0:22:24- Hello, ladies. You ready to play? - GIRLS:- Yes.

0:22:24 > 0:22:26Let me introduce you to your manager tonight.

0:22:26 > 0:22:30This is Chitua, and he's going to turn you into a world-class team.

0:22:30 > 0:22:31Over to you, Coach.

0:22:31 > 0:22:35OK, so the formation we're playing to day is a 2-3-1.

0:22:35 > 0:22:38So we're going to have two defenders, three midfielders

0:22:38 > 0:22:39and one striker.

0:22:39 > 0:22:43When it's a goal kick, I would like the defenders to go wide,

0:22:43 > 0:22:45and then the left wing and right wing to push up

0:22:45 > 0:22:47but the centre mid to like, drop in and out,

0:22:47 > 0:22:50and then when the opposition have the ball,

0:22:50 > 0:22:53if it's their goal kick, I want the striker to push back

0:22:53 > 0:22:57on the centre back, and the left wing and right wing stay there,

0:22:57 > 0:22:58then the centre mid doing the same position,

0:22:58 > 0:23:01- but the centre backs push up a bit. - I think that's fantastic.

0:23:01 > 0:23:04It's given you an idea of what he's wanting from you.

0:23:04 > 0:23:06What do we have to do, some high-fiving or fist pumping

0:23:06 > 0:23:09or some sort of thing to just get out there and give it everything?

0:23:09 > 0:23:12- INDISTINCT EXCLAMATION - Wayyy! Come on! Let's go!

0:23:12 > 0:23:13- Let's go!- Whoo!

0:23:18 > 0:23:19REFEREE BLOWS WHISTLE

0:23:25 > 0:23:27Make sure you're marked. Keep the ball!

0:23:30 > 0:23:31Great pass, Freya!

0:23:31 > 0:23:34Keep the ball, keep the ball!

0:23:34 > 0:23:36She needs help! Support!

0:23:36 > 0:23:37Well done.

0:23:37 > 0:23:41Freya is playing a blinder, and she's grasping the opportunity.

0:23:42 > 0:23:44Keep the ball!

0:23:44 > 0:23:45Unlucky!

0:23:45 > 0:23:47Run!

0:23:47 > 0:23:50Chitua's doing well, too, offering a nice mix of instruction

0:23:50 > 0:23:51and encouragement.

0:23:51 > 0:23:53Well done!

0:23:56 > 0:23:57Unlucky!

0:24:02 > 0:24:04Just keep on passing, moving.

0:24:04 > 0:24:07Once you've made the pass, move, then look for other passes

0:24:07 > 0:24:11and have... And just shoot so we can get a goal in the game.

0:24:11 > 0:24:13Great half-time team talk from Chitua,

0:24:13 > 0:24:17but can Freya and her team-mates convert his instructions into goals?

0:24:21 > 0:24:22Great goal!

0:24:22 > 0:24:25Looks like that team talk's had an immediate impact!

0:24:25 > 0:24:26Keep going!

0:24:26 > 0:24:28Freya delivers a cracking ball in from the corner,

0:24:28 > 0:24:31for her team-mate to nod in off the bar.

0:24:31 > 0:24:33That should please the manager.

0:24:33 > 0:24:34Keep going! Keep going!

0:24:37 > 0:24:39Keep going! Shoot!

0:24:39 > 0:24:41Oh! Unlucky, Freya!

0:24:41 > 0:24:42Nearly a dream goal!

0:24:42 > 0:24:43Unlucky.

0:24:43 > 0:24:45Recover!

0:24:46 > 0:24:48Unlucky. Keep going!

0:24:48 > 0:24:50The opposition have pulled one back to level the scoring at 1-1.

0:24:50 > 0:24:54Two minutes left, girls! Keep going! Get another goal! Win the game!

0:24:54 > 0:24:58Come on, Freya, nearly full-time! Could this be the last chance?

0:24:58 > 0:24:59Unlucky!

0:24:59 > 0:25:00REFEREE BLOWS WHISTLE

0:25:00 > 0:25:02The match finishes 1-1.

0:25:02 > 0:25:06Freya's held her own with a group of girls above her age group.

0:25:06 > 0:25:08But what's the gaffer got to say?

0:25:08 > 0:25:10Great passes, great crosses. Well done, well done.

0:25:10 > 0:25:12Our final assignment went really well.

0:25:12 > 0:25:14We came out with a 1-1 draw

0:25:14 > 0:25:16and I was the assist for the first goal for our team.

0:25:16 > 0:25:19My favourite part of this entire experience has been the last game,

0:25:19 > 0:25:22because it was sort of like a celebration from the time

0:25:22 > 0:25:24we've had at Ipswich. I know that it's a tough industry
