0:04:14 > 0:04:15So, welcome.

0:04:15 > 0:04:18I know you watched the show last night but what did you think of it?

0:04:18 > 0:04:20- It was amazing.- We loved it.

0:04:20 > 0:04:22What are your top three tips for anybody that wants to be

0:04:22 > 0:04:24in musical theatre?

0:04:24 > 0:04:26One - really obvious, don't be late.

0:04:26 > 0:04:31Number two - you've got to love telling stories through acting,

0:04:31 > 0:04:32through singing, through dancing.

0:04:32 > 0:04:34The third thing is about learning -

0:04:34 > 0:04:36you can learn from everybody all the time.

0:04:36 > 0:04:37From the most experienced actors

0:04:37 > 0:04:40and from people who are doing what seem like quite insignificant jobs

0:04:40 > 0:04:43and it's what keeps the thing alive and fresh.

0:04:46 > 0:04:48Punctuality is important in any job.

0:04:50 > 0:04:53After all, musical theatre is all about storytelling.

0:04:56 > 0:04:58Great performers are constantly learning.

0:04:59 > 0:05:03How many people would you reckon are in the production altogether?

0:05:03 > 0:05:04There's about 80 people.

0:05:04 > 0:05:07That's obviously people like the actors and the band,

0:05:07 > 0:05:10there's people backstage, there's a whole range of different jobs,

0:05:10 > 0:05:11it's incredible.

0:05:11 > 0:05:14Such a brilliant range of stuff that goes into making this show.

0:05:14 > 0:05:16So, I've got a little bit of a surprise for you.

0:05:16 > 0:05:19What we'd like to do is to give you the opportunity

0:05:19 > 0:05:22to maybe appear in the show.

0:05:22 > 0:05:24The mentors who'll come in and work with you,

0:05:24 > 0:05:27they'll need to put you through your paces and we'll see how you get on.

0:05:27 > 0:05:28It's not a done deal,

0:05:28 > 0:05:30so you're going to have to work really, really hard.

0:05:30 > 0:05:34- Wow!- Wow!- How do you feel about that?- Thanks!- Amazing!

0:05:34 > 0:05:36James has given our rookies the opportunity to appear

0:05:36 > 0:05:39in a performance of the show.

0:05:39 > 0:05:41If they prove they've got what it takes,

0:05:41 > 0:05:45the deal is they get to play sewer kids hiding from the villain.

0:05:50 > 0:05:55Theatre, a part of British culture for a long, long time.

0:05:55 > 0:05:59In 1576, The Globe became London's first proper playhouse.

0:05:59 > 0:06:03London now spurts out 18,000 performances a year

0:06:03 > 0:06:08in its 241...yes, 241 theatres.

0:06:08 > 0:06:11That's an audience of around 20 million people a year.

0:06:11 > 0:06:14More than 3,000 performers are treading the boards

0:06:14 > 0:06:17in London's theatres at any given time.

0:06:17 > 0:06:20And more than 6,500 other staff

0:06:20 > 0:06:22are beavering away behind the scenes.

0:06:23 > 0:06:25Theatreland in London's West End

0:06:25 > 0:06:27boasts a third of the city's theatres

0:06:27 > 0:06:31and is home to the longest-running musical, Les Miserables,

0:06:31 > 0:06:34with over 12,300 performances to date,

0:06:34 > 0:06:38an incredible 70 million people have seen the show worldwide.

0:06:39 > 0:06:41A little-known fact is that the city's theatres

0:06:41 > 0:06:43make more than the cinemas.

0:06:49 > 0:06:51Andrew Hilton is the production's

0:06:51 > 0:06:53musical director.

0:06:53 > 0:06:55He's in charge of music for the show

0:06:55 > 0:06:56and he'll be warming up

0:06:56 > 0:06:57Harry and Mia's vocal cords

0:06:57 > 0:06:59to see if they're good enough

0:06:59 > 0:07:00for a paying audience.

0:07:02 > 0:07:05Andrew, what are your top three tips for working in musical theatre?

0:07:05 > 0:07:07The first one is look after your voice

0:07:07 > 0:07:09because you've only got one voice.

0:07:09 > 0:07:11If you can't say your lines and you can't sing,

0:07:11 > 0:07:12you're not going to be able to do the show.

0:07:12 > 0:07:15Secondly, be nice to people because in the ensemble next to you

0:07:15 > 0:07:17could be your future director or choreographer.

0:07:17 > 0:07:19And thirdly, practise every day.

0:07:19 > 0:07:20There's so many actors out there

0:07:20 > 0:07:22that if you're not the best you can be,

0:07:22 > 0:07:25you're not going to get the job, so practise every single day.

0:07:29 > 0:07:31It's a precious instrument.

0:07:32 > 0:07:35You never know who you'll work with in future.

0:07:36 > 0:07:38As practice makes perfect.

0:07:41 > 0:07:42Here we go. So, the first line is...

0:07:42 > 0:07:46# There's no stopping what a fighting team can start. #

0:07:46 > 0:07:48Try that for me. Three and...

0:07:48 > 0:07:53- BOTH:- # There's no stopping what a fighting team can start. #

0:07:53 > 0:07:56# For all together A team can weather. #

0:07:56 > 0:07:57Try that.

0:07:57 > 0:08:01- BOTH:- # For all together A team can weather. #

0:08:01 > 0:08:03- # A team can weather. # Try that.- OK.

0:08:03 > 0:08:06- ALL:- # There's no stopping what a fighting team can't start

0:08:06 > 0:08:10# For all together A team can weather... #

0:08:10 > 0:08:14- Good.- KIDS:- # Every storm they may go through... #

0:08:14 > 0:08:15Yeah, that's hard, isn't it?

0:08:15 > 0:08:16It's a tricky song.

0:08:16 > 0:08:18- It sounds simple but it's actually tricky.- Yeah.

0:08:18 > 0:08:20And then the last line. # Yes, teamwork

0:08:20 > 0:08:22# Can make a dream work. #

0:08:22 > 0:08:24All on your own, yeah?

0:08:24 > 0:08:27- KIDS:- # For all together A team can weather

0:08:27 > 0:08:31# Every storm they may go through

0:08:31 > 0:08:34# Yes, teamwork can make a dream work

0:08:34 > 0:08:37# Can make the greatest dream come true. #

0:08:37 > 0:08:39OK, do that last line for me, really open your mouths.

0:08:39 > 0:08:41Can make... One, two, three...

0:08:41 > 0:08:44# Can make the greatest dream come true. #

0:08:44 > 0:08:46Three and...

0:08:46 > 0:08:47# So when you start out

0:08:47 > 0:08:49# Let all your heart out... #

0:08:49 > 0:08:52# And never stop once you begin. #

0:08:52 > 0:08:54And there is a stop after we say the word stop.

0:08:54 > 0:08:56Yeah, really big on..."gin"!

0:08:56 > 0:08:58Don't chicken out cos it's getting high.

0:08:58 > 0:08:59And then the very last line.

0:08:59 > 0:09:03# Yes, teamwork can make a dream work

0:09:03 > 0:09:08# If you have got the will to win. #

0:09:08 > 0:09:11So the really big ending, we want the audience standing on their feet

0:09:11 > 0:09:13because you've done such a good job. Go for it, deafen me.

0:09:13 > 0:09:15- QUIETLY:- # If you have got... #

0:09:15 > 0:09:16Oh, can't hear you. One, two, three...

0:09:16 > 0:09:24# If you have got the will to win. #

0:09:24 > 0:09:25Good. Getting there, it's better, OK.

0:09:25 > 0:09:27If we're going o get you in the show,

0:09:27 > 0:09:29you've got to be absolutely brilliant.

0:09:29 > 0:09:32# Great teams make its possibilities come true. #

0:09:32 > 0:09:34- Yeah. It's not too high for you, is it all right?- Ish.

0:09:34 > 0:09:37It's on the edge, yeah. Do that line for me one more time, great teams...

0:09:37 > 0:09:38Three and...

0:09:38 > 0:09:41# Great teams make your possibilities come true. #

0:09:41 > 0:09:43Do great teams again. Three and...

0:09:43 > 0:09:46# Great teams make... #

0:09:46 > 0:09:48- What?- I can't do it.

0:09:48 > 0:09:50- Oh, you can, you can. Don't stress. - OK.

0:09:50 > 0:09:52Oh. Shall we stop a sec?

0:09:54 > 0:09:56- 'Are you all right, Harry?'- Yeah.

0:09:57 > 0:09:59Harry's having bother hitting those higher notes

0:09:59 > 0:10:02as they're right at the limit of his vocal range.

0:10:02 > 0:10:06Andrew spotted it and he thinks Harry could do with a break.

0:10:06 > 0:10:07Breath in through your nose.

0:10:09 > 0:10:12- Hold it and let it out. - ANDREW EXHALES DEEPLY

0:10:12 > 0:10:14Two, three and...

0:10:14 > 0:10:17- KIDS:- # Teamwork can make a dream work

0:10:17 > 0:10:25# If you have got the will to win. #

0:10:25 > 0:10:26Great.

0:10:26 > 0:10:28Smile. Yeah, good! It's a happy song.

0:10:28 > 0:10:31OK. So you've learnt the words, you've learnt the tune.

0:10:31 > 0:10:33You've got to go away and practise a lot cos it's a hard song.

0:10:33 > 0:10:36I'm going to hand you over to Jo and she's going to teach you

0:10:36 > 0:10:37the dance moves for the song.

0:10:42 > 0:10:44It's her job to make sure the cast

0:10:44 > 0:10:45are getting all the dance routines

0:10:45 > 0:10:46right for the show.

0:10:46 > 0:10:48She'll be putting the rookies

0:10:48 > 0:10:49through their paces

0:10:49 > 0:10:50teaching them the moves to

0:10:50 > 0:10:52accompany their vocal talents.

0:10:52 > 0:10:56What are your top three tips for working in musical theatre?

0:10:56 > 0:10:58My top three tips would be stay focused.

0:10:58 > 0:11:00Always make sure when you're learning anything

0:11:00 > 0:11:04or you're in a dance class that you are looking at your teacher

0:11:04 > 0:11:06and you're making sure that you're doing everything

0:11:06 > 0:11:08absolutely correctly.

0:11:08 > 0:11:10Number two would be stay determined.

0:11:10 > 0:11:13Because if you know that you want to be on the stage,

0:11:13 > 0:11:15you have to make sure you can do everything you possibly can

0:11:15 > 0:11:17to make sure that can happen.

0:11:17 > 0:11:19And number three would be never give up

0:11:19 > 0:11:22because if you work really hard and you practise,

0:11:22 > 0:11:24you never know what you could do,

0:11:24 > 0:11:26you could be on that West End stage or even Broadway.

0:11:30 > 0:11:32And concentrate on what you're being taught.

0:11:34 > 0:11:36And follow your dream.

0:11:38 > 0:11:40Because hard work and willpower could lead you to the top.

0:11:41 > 0:11:43Five, six, seven and...

0:11:43 > 0:11:46# Teamwork can make the dream work...

0:11:49 > 0:11:51# ..To fight. # So, you're here, fight.

0:11:51 > 0:11:54One, two, three, four, five, six...

0:11:54 > 0:11:55Yes!

0:11:55 > 0:11:57- KIDS:- # Teamwork can make the dream work. #

0:11:57 > 0:11:58Good, Harry.

0:11:58 > 0:12:02- # Can make the greatest dream come true. #- Step, face this side.

0:12:02 > 0:12:04Salute. Oh, no, no, no!

0:12:04 > 0:12:06Would you salute your sergeant

0:12:06 > 0:12:07and then go like that, "Hi,"

0:12:07 > 0:12:09and then walk the other way?

0:12:09 > 0:12:11No, you'd go salute...and go.

0:12:11 > 0:12:13Mia, I can't hear you at the moment.

0:12:13 > 0:12:16Salute and go! Salute and go!

0:12:17 > 0:12:19Don't skip, march.

0:12:19 > 0:12:20You need to go like that...huh!

0:12:20 > 0:12:22Show me, angry.

0:12:22 > 0:12:25Forward, bend. Really aggressive.

0:12:25 > 0:12:26- Arrr!- Yes, but don't smile.

0:12:26 > 0:12:29- Do you know what you're doing?- Yeah. - Can we go from the beginning?

0:12:29 > 0:12:31- KIDS:- # Teamwork... # - One...you can stop there.

0:12:31 > 0:12:34Make sure that you jump to the side ready to go.

0:26:33 > 0:26:36It's not an easy thing just to come into a show, walk in, make friends

0:26:36 > 0:26:39and learn the material and you've both done really, really well.

0:26:39 > 0:26:41So, I think if this is anything to go by,

0:26:41 > 0:26:43if you keep working hard and keep enjoying it so much,

0:26:43 > 0:26:45then I think you've both got a real future.

0:26:45 > 0:26:47All the things that you learnt to do,

0:26:47 > 0:26:49whether it be in the wardrobe or in the rehearsal room,

0:26:49 > 0:26:52you achieved a lot in a short amount of time,

0:26:52 > 0:26:54so I can only see that you'll probably be on the stage

0:26:54 > 0:26:57if you can learn that quickly and achieve that quickly. Well done.

0:26:57 > 0:27:00Well, Harry and Mia, it's the end of the show

0:27:00 > 0:27:02but you've done some incredible stuff,

0:27:02 > 0:27:04you've found out all about what happens backstage.

0:27:04 > 0:27:07You've actually got to take part in a proper professional show.

0:27:07 > 0:27:09How was the experience for you?

0:27:09 > 0:27:12I think the experience has just been great for me.

0:27:12 > 0:27:16I've loved every second of it and it's just been an all-round

0:27:16 > 0:27:17really nice thing to do.

0:27:17 > 0:27:21- And you, Mia?- It's literally been the best experience ever

0:27:21 > 0:27:23and I've enjoyed every single second of it.

0:27:23 > 0:27:25OK, the moment of truth.

0:27:25 > 0:27:27Do you still want to be professional performers

0:27:27 > 0:27:29working in musical theatre?

0:27:29 > 0:27:31- Yes!- Harry?- Definitely.

0:27:31 > 0:27:35Yeah? OK. Hang on a minute, you're still wearing your costumes.

0:27:35 > 0:27:36First rule of musical theatre,

0:27:36 > 0:27:39always get changed back into your own clothes after the show.

0:27:39 > 0:27:40Go on, you'd better clear off!

0:27:42 > 0:27:43Didn't they do well?
