0:00:05 > 0:00:07..the bad... Ew!

0:00:07 > 0:00:10..and the downright astonishing.

0:00:10 > 0:00:11We give them glamour...

0:00:12 > 0:00:14..show them excitement,

0:00:14 > 0:00:18get their hands dirty, put them under pressure...

0:00:18 > 0:00:19Oh, no.

0:00:19 > 0:00:21..make them laugh.

0:00:21 > 0:00:24All because they want to experience their dream jobs.

0:00:26 > 0:00:29Today's rookies have got their sights set on becoming

0:00:29 > 0:00:30iconic fashion designers.

0:00:30 > 0:00:33But have they got what it takes to be top trendsetters?

0:00:33 > 0:00:35Let's find out, as we go...

0:00:35 > 0:00:38All Over The Workplace!

0:00:58 > 0:01:01Alex, pay attention, work the camera!

0:01:01 > 0:01:02I am working it.

0:01:02 > 0:01:06Pull on your pumps, slip on a sarong and settle back,

0:01:06 > 0:01:11as we enter the super glamorous universe of fashion design.

0:01:12 > 0:01:14First onto the runway is...

0:01:19 > 0:01:20Yellow is my favourite colour.

0:01:20 > 0:01:22As you can see, my hair band and my top.

0:01:22 > 0:01:25I wear lots and lots of yellow.

0:01:25 > 0:01:29I think I will make a good fashion designer, because I do cope well

0:01:29 > 0:01:32under pressure, and I do take in other people's ideas

0:01:32 > 0:01:35and I take in constructive criticism well.

0:01:35 > 0:01:37Next up is...

0:01:41 > 0:01:43I think the great thing about fashion design

0:01:43 > 0:01:47is that you will design clothes which no-one will have,

0:01:47 > 0:01:50they will be unique to your style.

0:01:50 > 0:01:53I get the inspiration from the world around me, ever since I read

0:01:53 > 0:01:57this quote from Coco Chanel that fashion isn't just in

0:01:57 > 0:02:00dresses and T-shirts, it is in the sky and the world around you.

0:02:02 > 0:02:05Dylan and Izzy have been whisked to London,

0:02:05 > 0:02:06capital of the British fashion industry,

0:02:06 > 0:02:09and starting point for many budding fashion designers.

0:02:11 > 0:02:13Wow, look at that view!

0:02:13 > 0:02:16Welcome to London, one of the fashion capitals of the world.

0:02:16 > 0:02:19So, Dylan, why do you want to be a fashion designer?

0:02:19 > 0:02:21Once I was watching Strictly Come Dancing,

0:02:21 > 0:02:24and Julien Macdonald was there, so I thought I'd give it a try.

0:02:24 > 0:02:26And, Izzy, why do you want to be a fashion designer?

0:02:26 > 0:02:29It's because it is quite a nice industry where you can be creative.

0:02:29 > 0:02:31And have you done any of your own fashion designs?

0:02:31 > 0:02:33I do them for my dog.

0:02:33 > 0:02:36For your dog? Yeah. So you want to be a dog fashion designer?

0:02:36 > 0:02:39Or women's as well, a mixture.

0:02:39 > 0:02:40Dylan, do you do your own designs?

0:02:40 > 0:02:43I usually match my outfits a lot.

0:02:43 > 0:02:45I will come downstairs and my mum will be like, "Ooh!"

0:02:46 > 0:02:48This is what your mum and dad think.

0:02:48 > 0:02:50I think Izzy is very creative.

0:02:50 > 0:02:52So I think she, she has got a good eye for...

0:02:52 > 0:02:54She's very good at drawing, very meticulous,

0:02:54 > 0:02:56she is good at putting colours together.

0:02:56 > 0:02:59I think she's very good at fine detail.

0:02:59 > 0:03:04I think Izzy may struggle with sizing up the dog's type clothes

0:03:04 > 0:03:06to work for an adult.

0:03:06 > 0:03:08I do try and offer fashion advice,

0:03:08 > 0:03:13but he has his own fashion and he has his own style,

0:03:13 > 0:03:16so he doesn't necessarily take it or accept it.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19Which can cause a few arguments.

0:03:20 > 0:03:22Izzy, your parents think you might

0:03:22 > 0:03:24struggle to do designs for human beings

0:03:24 > 0:03:25as opposed to dogs.

0:03:25 > 0:03:27Well, I think I can adapt.

0:03:27 > 0:03:31Remember, people have two legs and two arms, not four legs, like a dog.

0:03:31 > 0:03:35Just keep that in mind. And, Dylan, you like giving out criticism,

0:03:35 > 0:03:37but you don't like taking it.

0:03:37 > 0:03:39This is a creative business, you're going to get criticism.

0:03:39 > 0:03:40How you going to cope with that?

0:03:40 > 0:03:42I have millions of ideas,

0:03:42 > 0:03:45so I could change it to make it adapt to what people like.

0:03:52 > 0:03:56In the punk era, zips, safety pins and ripped jeans

0:03:56 > 0:03:58exploded onto the fashion scene,

0:03:58 > 0:04:00when designers like Vivienne Westwood

0:04:00 > 0:04:02broke all the rules.

0:04:02 > 0:04:06Fashion has come full circle, as ripped jeans are back in vogue.

0:04:06 > 0:04:08Back in the 1860s,

0:04:08 > 0:04:12dresses were so wide that women often got stuck in doorways.

0:04:12 > 0:04:15Too bad if there was a queue for the toilet.

0:04:15 > 0:04:18Ever wondered why men have buttons sewn on their jacket sleeves?

0:04:18 > 0:04:23Napoleon Bonaparte, Emperor and part-time fashion designer,

0:04:23 > 0:04:26decided to order buttons to be sewn onto soldiers' sleeves to stop them

0:04:26 > 0:04:29wiping their snotty noses onto them.

0:04:29 > 0:04:31NOSE BLOWS Blurgh!

0:04:32 > 0:04:35OK, rookies, we are here at the London College of Fashion,

0:04:35 > 0:04:37where you're going to be set your first assignment.

0:04:37 > 0:04:39Have you got your best catwalk walk ready?

0:04:39 > 0:04:41Yeah. OK, go for it!

0:04:45 > 0:04:46Based in Central London,

0:04:46 > 0:04:50the London College of Fashion has a reputation for producing top

0:04:50 > 0:04:54designers. Today, the rookies are here to meet...

0:04:59 > 0:05:02She is an expert in pattern cutting and technical innovation,

0:05:02 > 0:05:05and has worked with some of the biggest brands in the business,

0:05:05 > 0:05:07including Levi, Puma, and Berghaus.

0:05:10 > 0:05:12Claudine, what would your three top tips be

0:05:12 > 0:05:15for someone who wants to become a fashion designer?

0:05:15 > 0:05:19I would suggest, number one is to be curious, because it is all about you

0:05:19 > 0:05:21expressing your vision and your take on it,

0:05:21 > 0:05:23not somebody else's.

0:05:23 > 0:05:25Secondly, I would say you need to be kind.

0:05:25 > 0:05:27The industry is all about working with people.

0:05:27 > 0:05:31On a day-to-day basis, you are relying on people working with you,

0:05:31 > 0:05:33and you need to be a really good communicator,

0:05:33 > 0:05:36and also be kind to the environment.

0:05:36 > 0:05:37Because as designers of the future,

0:05:37 > 0:05:41you're going to be thinking about what resources are available to you,

0:05:41 > 0:05:44and also what message you are going to get across.

0:05:44 > 0:05:48And finally I would suggest you need to be brave.

0:05:48 > 0:05:50Be brave to try out new ideas.

0:05:50 > 0:05:53Make mistakes, and if it fails, it fails,

0:05:53 > 0:05:55but you will have learnt so much from that lesson.

0:05:55 > 0:05:57Claudine's top tips are...

0:06:15 > 0:06:17OK, Claudine, can you tell us

0:06:17 > 0:06:19what our rookies' assignment is going to be?

0:06:19 > 0:06:23You are going to experience the design process from idea to make, so

0:06:23 > 0:06:28that your garments will be showcased at Oxford Fashion Week on a catwalk.

0:06:28 > 0:06:30THEY GASP Wow! How do you feel?

0:06:30 > 0:06:34It's just amazing. I'm gobsmacked!

0:06:39 > 0:06:44My three top tips would be firstly, do your own designs,

0:06:44 > 0:06:45don't copy anybody else.

0:06:45 > 0:06:50The whole point of it is that you have something to say in the way you

0:06:50 > 0:06:53design dresses and garments, so it is really,

0:06:53 > 0:06:57really important that your personality comes through.

0:06:57 > 0:07:00The next thing would be you have to work really, really hard.

0:07:00 > 0:07:05It is not glamorous, and it is not full of celebrities. Bits of it are,

0:07:05 > 0:07:06but not very much.

0:07:06 > 0:07:09And you have to work really, really, really hard.

0:07:09 > 0:07:13The third thing is you have to enjoy it,

0:07:13 > 0:07:17because it is the most brilliant thing to do.

0:07:17 > 0:07:20If you're passionate about clothes, just enjoy them.

0:07:22 > 0:07:26So, the rookies have just found out that they have got to design an

0:07:26 > 0:07:29outfit to be showcased on the actual catwalk at Oxford Fashion Week.

0:07:29 > 0:07:32They'd better get to work!

0:07:32 > 0:07:33Right, what's first?

0:07:33 > 0:07:37Research. One of the important pages for you to develop is a mood board.

0:07:37 > 0:07:41What that does is put together all of your sources of inspiration.

0:07:41 > 0:07:44You are going to be looking at some books and maybe look at different

0:07:44 > 0:07:47shapes. You might start doing some drawings of different things

0:07:47 > 0:07:49that you like, and together,

0:07:49 > 0:07:53that gives you an overall look to communicate your idea.

0:07:53 > 0:07:55You have got to think about, this is going to be on a catwalk.

0:07:55 > 0:07:57We're not going down the shops,

0:07:57 > 0:07:59you have got to create your bold statement.

0:08:00 > 0:08:03OK? So, what would you say your bold statement is?

0:08:03 > 0:08:04Safari!

0:08:04 > 0:08:06Safari?

0:08:06 > 0:08:07Wow, safari.

0:08:07 > 0:08:10And neon colours and bows.

0:08:10 > 0:08:11Neon colours and bows?

0:08:11 > 0:08:12I love that!

0:08:16 > 0:08:19Look at this page of bows.

0:08:19 > 0:08:20Oh, wow.

0:08:20 > 0:08:23I think we need to put a marker on that.

0:08:23 > 0:08:24I like this coat.

0:08:24 > 0:08:27I think it matches really nicely with the khaki.

0:08:27 > 0:08:29Yeah, there's all leopard spots on there.

0:08:29 > 0:08:31But there are other patterns as well.

0:08:31 > 0:08:34After a brilliant session looking for inspiration,

0:08:34 > 0:08:38Izzy and Dylan are about to search through some garments to upcycle as

0:08:38 > 0:08:40part of their own designs.

0:08:40 > 0:08:43Whoa! Hey! Whoa!

0:08:46 > 0:08:49This is like the best time ever.

0:08:49 > 0:08:51Tropical scarf!

0:08:51 > 0:08:52I love yellow!

0:08:52 > 0:08:55I think that's pretty, like a neon, who has got the neon theme?

0:08:57 > 0:08:59Sharing is caring, remember the top three?

0:08:59 > 0:09:04Be kind. OK, so now you've selected your fabrics and garments,

0:09:04 > 0:09:05we can look at how that will work in

0:09:05 > 0:09:07with your themes from your mood board,

0:09:07 > 0:09:09OK? So we will take that over,

0:09:09 > 0:09:11and from that, we can start doing some drawings,

0:09:11 > 0:09:13thinking about the balance of colours you want,

0:09:13 > 0:09:15and then we're going to start working on the stand

0:09:15 > 0:09:17and really thinking about the shapes you want to create.

0:09:19 > 0:09:21Is this, like, a totally different way

0:09:21 > 0:09:23of doing it than you would normally at home?

0:09:23 > 0:09:26Yeah, cos I usually will go out into, like, town with my mum,

0:09:26 > 0:09:29and I will see something that will inspire me.

0:09:29 > 0:09:32But with the mood board and all the magazines, it's different.

0:09:32 > 0:09:36Yeah, the same, I normally just look around and see what inspires me.

0:09:36 > 0:09:38I don't usually make a mood board.

0:09:38 > 0:09:39Does it help? Yeah.

0:09:39 > 0:09:41It does, yeah.

0:09:42 > 0:09:44That looks great. Thank you.

0:09:44 > 0:09:48You've really captured all the colours from your theme.

0:09:48 > 0:09:50Dylan?

0:09:50 > 0:09:53Tell you what's really nice is how you have gone to different shapes.

0:09:53 > 0:09:55Yours is going to be big and flowing,

0:09:55 > 0:09:57and yours is going to be short with a long coat.

0:10:01 > 0:10:04After creating their mood boards, choosing fabrics,

0:10:04 > 0:10:07and finally drawing their designs, it is time to bring them to life.

0:10:08 > 0:10:13Fashion students Cherise and Dominic are here to lend a hand.

0:10:13 > 0:10:15Maybe that needs to be shorter?

0:10:15 > 0:10:16Cos that's good there.

0:10:16 > 0:10:18Yeah, you like this sort of length.

0:10:18 > 0:10:20But then it needs to go a bit higher. OK.

0:10:20 > 0:10:22Why don't we create some skweggings?

0:10:22 > 0:10:27OK, cos obviously you like the idea of the leggings, and the skirt,

0:10:27 > 0:10:30so we're going to combine them, half and half?

0:10:30 > 0:10:32Yeah. The...skweggings!

0:10:35 > 0:10:38We can turn this into like a sleeve, and it's like a sleeve on one side.

0:10:38 > 0:10:40Yeah, that would look nice as well.

0:10:40 > 0:10:44Shall we focus on the skweggings first?

0:10:44 > 0:10:46It is coming together.

0:10:46 > 0:10:48Yeah, so now we need to make it a bit more shaped.

0:10:48 > 0:10:50What did you study at school to get here?

0:10:50 > 0:10:54For my GCSEs I did art, and then for A-levels, I did textiles. Hmm!

0:10:55 > 0:10:58And it wasn't very popular at my school,

0:10:58 > 0:11:01but where I always knew I wanted to be a fashion designer,

0:11:01 > 0:11:04I kept pursuing that career.

0:11:04 > 0:11:07The sleeve is working really well, it is cool how the...

0:11:08 > 0:11:12You have got the lace in the sleeve, and on the ruffle matching.

0:11:12 > 0:11:14It's nice.

0:11:14 > 0:11:16This has gone in a creative direction,

0:11:16 > 0:11:18how does it relate to your design idea, though?

0:11:18 > 0:11:21You're coming up with loads of exciting ideas,

0:11:21 > 0:11:22but it is always good to keep a focus.

0:11:24 > 0:11:26Yeah. So, yeah, the sleeve is on.

0:11:26 > 0:11:28How do you think that we have developed

0:11:28 > 0:11:29from your original designs?

0:11:29 > 0:11:32It looks practically the same...

0:11:32 > 0:11:34Nice. We just haven't put the ribbons on yet.

0:11:34 > 0:11:36There's quite a bit of work left to do,

0:11:36 > 0:11:39do you think you're going to have enough time to pull it all together

0:11:39 > 0:11:40in time for the fashion show?

0:11:40 > 0:11:41We probably will.

0:11:41 > 0:11:44Probably. A lot of work, hard work.

0:11:44 > 0:11:47It is hard work.

0:11:47 > 0:11:49I never thought, at my age,

0:11:49 > 0:11:52to have a piece of my own work on a fashion show.

0:11:52 > 0:11:56Having my outfit modelled at Oxford Fashion Week

0:11:56 > 0:11:58is going to be amazing.

0:11:58 > 0:11:59I am pleased where I am at the minute,

0:11:59 > 0:12:02and am looking forward to adding the final pieces.

0:12:02 > 0:12:05Izzy, you've translated your ideas really well with how you selected

0:12:05 > 0:12:07the fabrics, you really stuck to your team.

0:12:07 > 0:12:11Dylan, on paper, you had a really clear idea set out,

0:12:11 > 0:12:12you had a lovely silhouette,

0:12:12 > 0:12:15really good mix of textures and colours,

0:12:15 > 0:12:19but then you started to lose focus and started to want everything.

0:12:19 > 0:12:23To be a good designer, you really need to really maintain that focus

0:12:23 > 0:12:25to stick to your original idea.

0:12:26 > 0:12:30Giles Deacon is an accomplished designer who presented his first

0:12:30 > 0:12:32collection in 2004.

0:12:32 > 0:12:35The same year, he was named best new designer.

0:12:36 > 0:12:40He has since won many more awards, and has a big celebrity following,

0:12:40 > 0:12:43including Lily Allen, Angelina Jolie and Cate Blanchett.

0:12:45 > 0:12:47Giles, what would your three top tips be

0:12:47 > 0:12:50for somebody who wants to become a fashion designer like you?

0:12:50 > 0:12:51I think you have to have your own vision,

0:12:51 > 0:12:54very distinctive vision and ideas.

0:12:54 > 0:12:57Be nice to people and work hard.

0:12:57 > 0:13:03Giles's top tips for fashion design are, firstly, have your own vision,

0:13:03 > 0:13:05make it a very distinctive vision and idea.

0:13:07 > 0:13:10Like Claudine, Giles thinks it's important to be nice to people.

0:13:10 > 0:13:13And lastly, you have to work hard!

0:13:16 > 0:13:19Izzy and Dylan are eager to show their design ideas to Giles

0:13:19 > 0:13:22and they are thirsty to hear his advice on where to go from here.

0:13:22 > 0:13:25I think you could do with a lot more volume in the skirt.

0:13:25 > 0:13:27Obviously we have got loads of work to do,

0:13:27 > 0:13:28so what's the next step?

0:13:28 > 0:13:31The next step is to start making these pieces real,

0:13:31 > 0:13:36and to start pattern cutting and to keep the day really, really focused,

0:13:36 > 0:13:39cos we have got a short amount of time to make these pieces

0:13:39 > 0:13:42as fantastic as possible for the runway show tomorrow.

0:13:42 > 0:13:43Right, let's get cracking!

0:13:48 > 0:13:51The rookies now pin and cut the fabric into the pieces that will be

0:13:51 > 0:13:53stitched up to make their garments.

0:13:53 > 0:13:57It is not always the most exciting part of fashion design, this,

0:13:57 > 0:14:00I will admit, but it is an important one.

0:14:01 > 0:14:04You have cut a few things before for your dog, haven't you?

0:14:04 > 0:14:05What sort of dog have you got?

0:14:05 > 0:14:08A Pomeranian. Do you know what? I'd love a Pomeranian!

0:14:10 > 0:14:11What colour is it? White.

0:14:11 > 0:14:12You are spoiled!

0:14:14 > 0:14:16Look at that, you're a natural.

0:14:16 > 0:14:20Dylan and Izzy carefully oversee the stitching of their designs.

0:14:20 > 0:14:23Now things are literally coming together.

0:14:23 > 0:14:25How fast can the sewing machine go?

0:14:25 > 0:14:27It can go as fast as you want them to go,

0:14:27 > 0:14:30so it all depends on the balance that you want have got on the pedal.

0:14:30 > 0:14:33It's a bit like a car - when you accelerate it goes faster.

0:14:35 > 0:14:39So, that's the shoulder piece. Step number one done.

0:14:40 > 0:14:42That looks nice!

0:14:46 > 0:14:49Izzy and Dylan are now busy putting the finishing touches to their

0:14:49 > 0:14:52creations, like buttons and ribbons,

0:14:52 > 0:14:54and it is not long before they will be ready for the runway.

0:14:56 > 0:14:59You can do all the hard work, I'll just put the pins in the cushion.

0:14:59 > 0:15:03Yeah, I've noticed that. It's just there is not much pinning going on.

0:15:03 > 0:15:08There is like a lace area under the neck, and I plan to put three bows,

0:15:08 > 0:15:11like, vertically down.

0:15:11 > 0:15:13I think something quite nice and subtle like this would work.

0:15:13 > 0:15:16Yeah. Let's pin him on.

0:15:17 > 0:15:18How's about that?

0:15:18 > 0:15:21Yeah. This is quite nice, actually, isn't it?

0:15:21 > 0:15:23How it dangles down.

0:15:23 > 0:15:26It's great if you've been eating soup as well

0:15:26 > 0:15:29cos you could go like that. Yeah. Cracking.

0:15:29 > 0:15:32My plan was to have it like that so it looks a bit like a zebra.

0:15:32 > 0:15:33You wanted it that way around?

0:15:33 > 0:15:34See, this is all good to know.

0:15:34 > 0:15:38It could be next to it or overlapping it like that.

0:15:38 > 0:15:39Overlapping sounds quite good.

0:15:46 > 0:15:50Hi, we're Confetti Crowd! Here are our top three tips on designing.

0:15:51 > 0:15:52Make sure you do lots and lots of research

0:15:52 > 0:15:55before you actually get to the designing process.

0:15:55 > 0:15:57You can flick through old magazines and newspapers,

0:15:57 > 0:15:58you can cut things out,

0:15:58 > 0:16:01and then you can put them all into your mood boards and create

0:16:01 > 0:16:03a visual display of all that is going on inside your head.

0:16:05 > 0:16:06Never limit your creativity.

0:16:06 > 0:16:09Use new fabrics and materials and try out new things.

0:16:09 > 0:16:12You can stand out from the crowd and be unique.

0:16:12 > 0:16:16Print out the outline of a body, which you can find online,

0:16:16 > 0:16:18and draw your design ideas over it.

0:16:18 > 0:16:20Try out one design or print it in lots of different ways,

0:16:20 > 0:16:23and remember to have fun with fashion.

0:16:23 > 0:16:26OK, rookies, this is the moment of truth.

0:16:26 > 0:16:30This is the first time you're going to see your creations

0:16:30 > 0:16:32on actual human, living models.

0:16:32 > 0:16:34First we have Anya.

0:16:34 > 0:16:37Wow! Mmm!

0:16:37 > 0:16:39Andrea here.

0:16:39 > 0:16:40How are you feeling?

0:16:40 > 0:16:43Excited? It's really good.

0:16:43 > 0:16:45Yeah. It looks super, super gorgeous.

0:16:45 > 0:16:48I think you've done incredibly well.

0:16:48 > 0:16:51I think the proportions work well with the jacket and the skeggings.

0:16:51 > 0:16:53We weren't sure what that was going to look like.

0:16:53 > 0:16:55But it works well. And that yellow shirt with the pocket,

0:16:55 > 0:16:58where has the pocket gone? There it is! Look at that!

0:16:58 > 0:17:01And I think the most important thing is it has come across all the way

0:17:01 > 0:17:03through that you've been working really hard, but you've been

0:17:03 > 0:17:05having loads of fun with it.

0:17:05 > 0:17:08Develop your own ideas, your own vision, but have some fun.

0:17:10 > 0:17:13Meeting Giles Deacon was really cool,

0:17:13 > 0:17:15because he is, like, a big fashion icon.

0:17:15 > 0:17:18Giles inspired me to go big, like, not to hide.

0:17:18 > 0:17:22Try and make new ideas, even if it doesn't look the greatest,

0:17:22 > 0:17:24just try everything out.

0:17:24 > 0:17:28My favourite part about today was probably seeing the jacket

0:17:28 > 0:17:30when it was finished - it looks really good.

0:17:30 > 0:17:33I'm really excited to see my outfit on a runway,

0:17:33 > 0:17:36as it's never happened before, and it's your design, so,

0:17:36 > 0:17:38it's not anyone else's, it's yours.

0:17:38 > 0:17:42Dylan, you're quite brilliant, you got loads and loads of ideas.

0:17:42 > 0:17:44I think if I had one criticism

0:17:44 > 0:17:47it would be for you to focus a little bit more.

0:17:47 > 0:17:48After about five pins,

0:17:48 > 0:17:52you had gone on to something else and left other people to do it.

0:17:52 > 0:17:54Izzy, I thought you were lovely.

0:17:54 > 0:17:57You've got a really beautiful, calm personality.

0:17:57 > 0:18:00That really came across in your designs.

0:18:00 > 0:18:03It could be seen on a runway in London, no problem.

0:18:03 > 0:18:08It is very, very sensitive and very mature for a girl of your age.

0:18:10 > 0:18:14The short hop from London to Oxford takes us to Oxford Fashion Week,

0:18:14 > 0:18:18one of the most prestigious fashion events of the year.

0:18:18 > 0:18:22Designers, models, agents, fashion writers and Izzy and Dylan,

0:18:22 > 0:18:25are all here to experience the latest must-have designs,

0:18:25 > 0:18:26showing to an excited public.

0:18:28 > 0:18:30Adam Gibbs is a model,

0:18:30 > 0:18:33and he has worked in fashion shows all over the world.

0:18:33 > 0:18:36He has vast experience of what it takes to put a runway event

0:18:36 > 0:18:39like this together - just the man to show Izzy and Dylan the ropes.

0:18:39 > 0:18:43Here are his top tips for a successful first-time fashion show.

0:18:43 > 0:18:46With your designs today, you want to have a really clear brand.

0:18:46 > 0:18:48Work out what your kind of unique thing is,

0:18:48 > 0:18:50so the audience knows that's your design,

0:18:50 > 0:18:51they know how to recognise your design.

0:18:51 > 0:18:54It is also really important to be very organised.

0:18:54 > 0:18:55That is top tip number two,

0:18:55 > 0:18:57cover every possibility, have the spare tape,

0:18:57 > 0:18:59the scissors, the thread.

0:18:59 > 0:19:01And tip number three is networking. Talk to people,

0:19:01 > 0:19:05be proud of it and make sure you let people know that's your design.

0:19:05 > 0:19:07Adam's top tips are...

0:19:08 > 0:19:11Have a clear brand, work out your unique look

0:19:11 > 0:19:14so the audience recognise your design.

0:19:14 > 0:19:18Be organised. Be ready for absolutely anything.

0:19:18 > 0:19:21Network, talk to people, be proud

0:19:21 > 0:19:24and let people know that's your design.

0:19:25 > 0:19:27That's great, so what's the next thing we need to do?

0:19:27 > 0:19:30So, we're going to get going, it's time for hair and make-up.

0:19:30 > 0:19:31Are you ready? Let's roll.

0:19:31 > 0:19:34The rookies are lucky to have the services

0:19:34 > 0:19:35of make-up artist Emily Bliss.

0:19:35 > 0:19:37Izzy, what are you thinking for your make-up?

0:19:37 > 0:19:40Well, because I've got yellow on my top, I'm thinking,

0:19:40 > 0:19:42maybe on the eyes there could be a bit of yellow.

0:19:42 > 0:19:45Perfect, that will tie in the whole look together.

0:19:45 > 0:19:47On my mood board, I had a similar thing,

0:19:47 > 0:19:49the eyes with the yellow.

0:19:49 > 0:19:50So it is exactly what you wanted?

0:19:50 > 0:19:51Yeah. Fantastic.

0:19:52 > 0:19:55Could it be, like, a tiny bit brighter?

0:19:55 > 0:19:57Yeah, of course it can.

0:20:01 > 0:20:03So, Izzy, what do you think?

0:20:03 > 0:20:05It's really good. Is it what you wanted? Yeah.

0:20:05 > 0:20:07Emily's creating a unique bow

0:20:07 > 0:20:10in model Andrea's hair from Izzy's vision.

0:20:10 > 0:20:12This is a new one, even for Emily.

0:20:13 > 0:20:15How's that? It's just what I wanted.

0:20:15 > 0:20:17Brilliant. Is that what you pictured?

0:20:17 > 0:20:18Yeah. Fantastic.

0:20:18 > 0:20:21Now, Dylan supervises model Anya's make-up.

0:20:21 > 0:20:25For her make-up, we could have, like a black strip across her eyes.

0:20:25 > 0:20:27And do you want it going all across the eyes,

0:20:27 > 0:20:28so there's no gap in the middle?

0:20:28 > 0:20:31Yeah. Yeah? From there to there.

0:20:31 > 0:20:33How does that work into your design?

0:20:33 > 0:20:35It's sort of like a zebra stripe.

0:20:35 > 0:20:38Do you want me to get you a paintbrush?

0:20:40 > 0:20:42Going to be a while, aren't you, with that one?

0:20:47 > 0:20:48Dylan, what do you think?

0:20:48 > 0:20:50I think it looks really good. Is it what you pictured?

0:20:50 > 0:20:52Yeah. And it's unique as well.

0:20:52 > 0:20:55It's very different, we don't usually see this, that's good.

0:21:01 > 0:21:04Hello, my name is Anna Robbins, and I'm a costume designer.

0:21:04 > 0:21:06I would say, for all the aspiring costume designers out there,

0:21:06 > 0:21:08my three top tips are...

0:21:09 > 0:21:12Work hard. You get out what you put in,

0:21:12 > 0:21:15and it is a very rewarding profession,

0:21:15 > 0:21:19if you just have a very strong work ethic to take you through.

0:21:19 > 0:21:21Number two, have a positive attitude.

0:21:21 > 0:21:24You have to work with all sorts of people under quite difficult

0:21:24 > 0:21:27circumstances, and a positive attitude means you go home

0:21:27 > 0:21:29with a smile on your face at the end of the day.

0:21:29 > 0:21:31Number three, immerse yourself

0:21:31 > 0:21:34in all the things that you find inspiring,

0:21:34 > 0:21:36because that is what informs your designs

0:21:36 > 0:21:38and makes you a better designer,

0:21:38 > 0:21:40more rounded, more sophisticated.

0:21:40 > 0:21:44Stress levels rise as the start draws near.

0:21:44 > 0:21:47Dylan, Izzy and other designers and models are busy with finishing

0:21:47 > 0:21:51touches, as the public fill the seats, ready for showtime.

0:21:51 > 0:21:53The top is not straight!

0:21:53 > 0:21:55It needs to be straight!

0:21:57 > 0:22:00And then we need the coat on.

0:22:00 > 0:22:04That looks good. So, when she's posing, she will pull it off,

0:22:04 > 0:22:07turn around like that, and then you walk off.

0:22:07 > 0:22:08Good with that? Of course.

0:22:08 > 0:22:10When you get to the top, maybe twirl a bit to show the...

0:22:10 > 0:22:13Yeah. Sure.

0:22:15 > 0:22:17Have you noticed, with your hair band and dress,

0:22:17 > 0:22:19you've tied in perfectly with the design? Yeah.

0:22:19 > 0:22:21So when you walk out at the end,

0:22:21 > 0:22:23you're going to match what you've made. Yeah.

0:22:23 > 0:22:27A very critical audience are poised for the designs to appear.

0:22:27 > 0:22:30You designed that? Yeah.

0:22:30 > 0:22:31Well done. Thank you.

0:22:33 > 0:22:36Izzy takes Adam's advice and does a spot of networking.

0:22:38 > 0:22:41Your design is going to be going down the catwalk in a little while.

0:22:41 > 0:22:43How are you feeling at the moment?

0:22:43 > 0:22:45I'm actually feeling quite scared.

0:22:45 > 0:22:48Because I don't know what's going to happen.

0:22:48 > 0:22:50Are you friends?

0:22:50 > 0:22:54This is the designer of this outfit.

0:22:54 > 0:22:56Famous designer.

0:22:57 > 0:23:00And what about the bit where you have to go out on stage,

0:23:00 > 0:23:01how are you feeling about that?

0:23:01 > 0:23:03Actually quite excited.

0:23:03 > 0:23:04Excited, nervous, how are you feeling?

0:23:04 > 0:23:06A bit nervous, but I'm trying

0:23:06 > 0:23:09to distract myself by talking to everyone.

0:23:09 > 0:23:10You've been talking to everyone!

0:23:10 > 0:23:13It's getting quiet now, exciting.

0:23:13 > 0:23:17It's time. Oxford Fashion Week runway show begins.

0:23:19 > 0:23:22The rookies' models aren't the only ones with interesting make-up.

0:23:24 > 0:23:26Hey! Exciting!

0:23:26 > 0:23:28This is the moment of truth, isn't it?

0:23:28 > 0:23:30You look magnificent. How's my lipstick?

0:23:30 > 0:23:32You've got plenty on, I think, you'll be all right.

0:23:32 > 0:23:33You look superb.

0:23:33 > 0:23:36This is fantastic, are you excited? Yeah.

0:23:36 > 0:23:38Yes, come on, enjoy yourself out there.

0:23:40 > 0:23:43I'm going to wait here.

0:23:49 > 0:23:50OK, are you ready?

0:23:50 > 0:23:52Dylan's design going down well,

0:23:52 > 0:23:54and now it is time for him to reveal

0:23:54 > 0:23:56it was designed by a very young designer.

0:24:01 > 0:24:04Next up on the catwalk, Izzy's design.

0:24:06 > 0:24:07Ready?

0:24:10 > 0:24:12Izzy's design is delivered, too.

0:24:12 > 0:24:15Now she can relax and take her bow.

0:24:27 > 0:24:28So, how was that, guys?

0:24:28 > 0:24:30You've just been out in front of all those people,

0:24:30 > 0:24:32they've seen your designs.

0:24:32 > 0:24:33It was amazing!

0:24:33 > 0:24:36You got the loudest applause out of anyone.

0:24:36 > 0:24:37The loudest applause. They loved it.

0:24:37 > 0:24:38High-five, everyone.

0:24:42 > 0:24:46I think Dylan and Izzy's designs were absolutely exceptional.

0:24:46 > 0:24:48As a designer, I knew when I was their age,

0:24:48 > 0:24:52I never thought of actually making a garment, a real garment,

0:24:52 > 0:24:56and the way Izzy and Dylan conceived the garments, it was awesome.

0:24:56 > 0:24:58I think they were amazing.

0:24:58 > 0:24:59That was just out of this world.

0:25:03 > 0:25:06To hear everyone cheering for my design, it was amazing!

0:25:06 > 0:25:08I felt really, really good.

0:25:08 > 0:25:11When everyone was cheering, I felt like really proud,

0:25:11 > 0:25:12really happy and excited.

0:25:13 > 0:25:16I am so proud of myself.

0:25:16 > 0:25:18I feel really, like, amazing.

0:25:18 > 0:25:19Slightly, like...

0:25:19 > 0:25:21A bit shell-shocked.

0:25:21 > 0:25:25I didn't realise it actually happened until now.

0:25:25 > 0:25:27Dylan, you did amazing, you should be really proud.

0:25:27 > 0:25:29You've got the absolute makings of a fashion designer.

0:25:29 > 0:25:32Right now, you've got really good, unique concepts,

0:25:32 > 0:25:35and the difficulty is finding one that you like the most

0:25:35 > 0:25:36and honing in on that idea.

0:25:36 > 0:25:39Izzy, today I saw you really kind of come out of your shell a bit.

0:25:39 > 0:25:41In the morning we had this quiet, shy girl who came along.

0:25:41 > 0:25:44By the evening, you were buzzing, you were excited.

0:25:44 > 0:25:45You've got a really good eye for fashion,

0:25:45 > 0:25:47and don't ever doubt yourself.

0:25:47 > 0:25:49Make sure you've got that confidence.

0:25:49 > 0:25:52The rookies have had an incredible fashion experience,

0:25:52 > 0:25:56creating their look, designing actual garments,

0:25:56 > 0:25:59and working with experts to bring them to reality.

0:25:59 > 0:26:01But do the mentors think they have

0:26:01 > 0:26:03what it takes to make it as designers?

0:26:10 > 0:26:13Izzy, you most definitely can become a fashion designer.

0:26:13 > 0:26:16Izzy, you can definitely make it as a fashion designer.

0:26:16 > 0:26:17Remember, be brave, be confident.

0:26:17 > 0:26:20I think you would do really well working in the fashion industry.

0:26:20 > 0:26:24You have all the right skills to be a creative, considered,

0:26:24 > 0:26:26passionate designer.

0:26:26 > 0:26:29I think your taste is quite exceptional.

0:26:29 > 0:26:33Dylan, I think you could make it in the fashion industry,

0:26:33 > 0:26:36but I think of you more as a stylist than a designer.

0:26:36 > 0:26:39I think you've got a great career ahead of you, with your enthusiasm,

0:26:39 > 0:26:40and I think you will do really well.

0:26:40 > 0:26:43You most definitely have the talent,

0:26:43 > 0:26:47and I think you most definitely have the ambition, so there is a very,

0:26:47 > 0:26:50very high chance, with some luck, and working hard,

0:26:50 > 0:26:51and being nice to people,

0:26:51 > 0:26:54that you're going to get a career in fashion.

0:26:54 > 0:26:56Dylan, you have what you need to be a fashion designer.

0:26:56 > 0:26:58You're going to make it really, really far, just hone in

0:26:58 > 0:27:01on one idea, really work on that, and it is quick to be amazing.

0:27:01 > 0:27:06Dylan, do you still want to be a fashion designer?

0:27:06 > 0:27:09I want to go for it, because I really like fashion,

0:27:09 > 0:27:14and I think going down the runway today was a really good feeling.

0:27:14 > 0:27:17OK, Izzy, do you still want to be a fashion designer?

0:27:17 > 0:27:18Yes. Are you sure?

0:27:18 > 0:27:20100%. Absolutely?

0:27:20 > 0:27:21Yes. I think you could be fashion designers,

0:27:21 > 0:27:24but what you need to do is menswear.

0:27:24 > 0:27:27And if you do, I could be your model, watch this!

0:27:33 > 0:27:35No, I'll do it again, hang on!

0:27:39 > 0:27:42Hey, hang on! Izzy, Dylan?

0:27:42 > 0:27:45I haven't done it yet, I can do it much better, honestly.

0:27:45 > 0:27:46I'll do a spin!
