0:01:15 > 0:01:16Hello, I'm Andy.

0:01:16 > 0:01:20I work here in the dinosaur gallery of the National Museum.

0:01:20 > 0:01:24Hatty, our dinosaur expert, is working on a brand new display today

0:01:24 > 0:01:26all about life in the time of Tyrannosaurus rex.

0:01:26 > 0:01:28My favourite dinosaur!

0:01:28 > 0:01:31I don't know why she wants a CD, but I'm sure we'll find out.

0:01:39 > 0:01:40That looks good.

0:01:40 > 0:01:44I love a display with a Tyrannosaurus rex on it.

0:01:44 > 0:01:47Hmm... I wonder what this does.

0:01:47 > 0:01:48Ah, there you are!

0:01:48 > 0:01:50Sounds like Hatty.

0:01:50 > 0:01:54That's because it is Hatty. I'm right here.

0:01:54 > 0:01:58Whoa! Sorry, Hatty, I'm a bit jumpy today. Hatty?

0:01:58 > 0:02:00- Did you bring that CD I asked for? - Yeah.

0:02:00 > 0:02:03I thought you were the button.

0:02:04 > 0:02:06- What's on it?- Let me show you.

0:02:09 > 0:02:10Now, press the button.

0:02:11 > 0:02:13T-REX ROARS

0:02:13 > 0:02:15A Tyrannosaurus rex!

0:02:15 > 0:02:17Not a real Tyrannosaurs rex, of course,

0:02:17 > 0:02:21because no-one was alive to hear her, let alone record her.

0:02:21 > 0:02:24But, I think it's probably pretty close.

0:02:24 > 0:02:27I made it by mixing the trumpet of an elephant and the bark of a dog.

0:02:27 > 0:02:30- Pretty good, don't you think? - It sounds great!

0:02:30 > 0:02:34Scientists think that dinosaurs made all sorts of peculiar sounds.

0:02:34 > 0:02:36The fossils of some dinosaurs,

0:02:36 > 0:02:38like this Lambeosaurus, for instance,

0:02:38 > 0:02:40show that they had crests on top of their heads.

0:02:40 > 0:02:44These crests would fill with air when the dinosaur breathed in.

0:02:44 > 0:02:46If they wanted to make a sound,

0:02:46 > 0:02:48they'd just push the air back out again.

0:02:48 > 0:02:50Hoooooo!

0:02:50 > 0:02:53Like a trombone! Wooo!

0:02:53 > 0:02:56Exactly! You see, many dinosaurs lived in groups.

0:02:56 > 0:02:59And animals that live in groups, like monkeys or lions,

0:02:59 > 0:03:03need to make noises that the rest of the group can hear.

0:03:03 > 0:03:06- Like cries for help. - Or, noises to scare off an attacker.

0:03:06 > 0:03:08Or, warning signs when danger is coming.

0:03:08 > 0:03:11Or, in the case of Tyrannosaurus rex,

0:03:11 > 0:03:12to show who's boss.

0:03:12 > 0:03:15Because T-rex was definitely the boss in his neighbourhood.

0:03:15 > 0:03:18ROARING

0:03:18 > 0:03:20Sorry, Hatty, you surprised me again.

0:03:20 > 0:03:23That's all right, I should've warned you.

0:03:24 > 0:03:27MUFFLED ROARS

0:03:27 > 0:03:28Must have got scratched.

0:03:31 > 0:03:36It has! There's no way it's going to work now and the museum opens soon.

0:03:36 > 0:03:39You could record my voice, I could roar.

0:03:39 > 0:03:42ROOAAAR!

0:03:42 > 0:03:45I think we'll need something else. Uh...

0:03:45 > 0:03:50maybe I could go to the zoo and try to record another elephant, or...

0:03:50 > 0:03:51Erm!

0:03:51 > 0:03:56- Don't worry, Hatty, I'll sort it out.- But there's no time.

0:03:56 > 0:03:57BELL CHIMES

0:04:01 > 0:04:03CUCKOO CLOCK SQUAWKS

0:04:08 > 0:04:09I'll make time.

0:04:11 > 0:04:15- Thanks, Andy, I knew I could count on you.- Oh, always.

0:04:17 > 0:04:21You know what this means, time to go on a dinosaur adventure!

0:04:31 > 0:04:33Right, waistcoat.

0:04:34 > 0:04:36Gizmo. Hat.

0:04:36 > 0:04:39And last but not least, Hatty's backpack.

0:04:55 > 0:04:58To the time of Tyrannosaurus rex!

0:04:58 > 0:05:00CLOCK CHIMES

0:05:27 > 0:05:29DINOSAURS GRUNT

0:05:32 > 0:05:34I've made it!

0:05:34 > 0:05:37I travelled back in time 65 million years

0:05:37 > 0:05:39to the time of Tyrannosaurus rex.

0:05:39 > 0:05:42Now, all I need to do is find a T-rex,

0:05:42 > 0:05:45and record its incredible roar on my gizmo.

0:05:45 > 0:05:47DINOSAUR ROARS

0:05:47 > 0:05:48What was that?

0:05:54 > 0:05:57T-REX ROARS

0:05:57 > 0:05:59It's a T-rex!

0:06:00 > 0:06:01T-REX ROARS

0:06:02 > 0:06:04It's quite far away.

0:06:05 > 0:06:07But, I can still hear it.

0:06:11 > 0:06:12T-REX ROARS

0:06:15 > 0:06:17T-REX ROARS

0:06:23 > 0:06:26Oh, it's far too quiet.

0:06:26 > 0:06:27I'm going to need to get closer.

0:06:29 > 0:06:33Was that...that sounded close.

0:06:33 > 0:06:36I think it might be coming from over there.

0:06:36 > 0:06:37DINOSAUR ROARS

0:06:55 > 0:06:57It's a group of Anatotitans.

0:06:59 > 0:07:02It says here that they're plant eaters.

0:07:02 > 0:07:06I can't see much plant life around here.

0:07:06 > 0:07:08All there is is lots of ash from the volcanoes.

0:07:12 > 0:07:13It also says that

0:07:13 > 0:07:18they could have been a favourite food of the T-rex.

0:07:18 > 0:07:24In that case, I'll stick with them in case one turns up and roars.

0:07:24 > 0:07:26Yeah, a bit like that, only a lot louder.

0:07:35 > 0:07:37This is more like it.

0:07:39 > 0:07:43Anatotitans used to live in areas where there was lots of water,

0:07:43 > 0:07:44just like this.

0:07:49 > 0:07:52And, with lots of delicious green leaves to eat.

0:07:55 > 0:07:56DINOSAUR ROARS

0:07:56 > 0:07:57What was that?

0:07:58 > 0:08:02It's not a huge Tyrannosaurus rex, but it is a huge pterosaur.

0:08:03 > 0:08:06It's a Quetzalcoatlus.

0:08:06 > 0:08:08I think he's coming in to land.

0:08:08 > 0:08:11Oh, not before he's had some lunch, though.

0:08:13 > 0:08:16Look at that! It's enormous!

0:08:19 > 0:08:22Those wings must be about 10 meters from tip to tip.

0:08:22 > 0:08:25Easily the largest flying animal ever.

0:08:31 > 0:08:33DINOSAUR ROARS

0:08:45 > 0:08:47This mist is getting thicker.

0:08:47 > 0:08:52Come on, T-rex, where are you? Uh...what's that?

0:08:52 > 0:08:56I hope I'm going the right way. Hmm...

0:08:56 > 0:08:57I think I'm close.

0:08:59 > 0:09:01Oh! Ouch!

0:09:02 > 0:09:03Who put that there?

0:09:04 > 0:09:06Oh, what's this?

0:09:06 > 0:09:10OK, I'm going to sit on this rock till the mist clears.

0:09:10 > 0:09:12Ah...well, this rock feels like it's moving.

0:09:14 > 0:09:18What's that noise? I'm obviously hungrier than I thought.

0:09:18 > 0:09:22Ah, the mist has cleared, I can see things now.

0:09:22 > 0:09:23Like that T-rex I was after.

0:09:26 > 0:09:29Oh!

0:09:29 > 0:09:33T-rex! Two of them. And they're both asleep.

0:09:35 > 0:09:38All I have to do is wake them up, get them to roar at me,

0:09:38 > 0:09:41I can record it on my gizmo, then run back to the clock.

0:09:41 > 0:09:43Right...

0:09:45 > 0:09:47How do you wake a T-rex up?

0:09:47 > 0:09:48Umm...

0:09:50 > 0:09:52Ooh-ee!

0:09:52 > 0:09:53HE WHISTLES

0:09:53 > 0:09:54Wakey, wakey!

0:09:55 > 0:09:58- HE CLAPS - Come on now, up you get!

0:09:59 > 0:10:03Umm... UP! Get up! Wake up!

0:10:04 > 0:10:06What am I going to do? This isn't working.

0:10:06 > 0:10:07Oh!

0:10:07 > 0:10:10ROCK RICOCHETS

0:10:15 > 0:10:19All right, that's what we're talking about. I just need to...

0:10:19 > 0:10:24Well, where are you going? Now, if one of you could just...

0:10:24 > 0:10:26T-REX ROARS

0:10:28 > 0:10:30OK.

0:10:30 > 0:10:32I think I've got it.

0:10:32 > 0:10:33You can stop now.

0:10:38 > 0:10:41I better go! Whoa!

0:10:45 > 0:10:47I think I've lost them.

0:10:53 > 0:10:56Oh, no! How did they get there?

0:10:58 > 0:11:00They must have overtaken me.

0:11:00 > 0:11:04How am I going to get past them to the clock?

0:11:04 > 0:11:05CLOCK CHIMES

0:11:05 > 0:11:08The museum, it's going to open soon.

0:11:08 > 0:11:09Um...

0:11:14 > 0:11:17Hatty's backpack. It's always full of useful things.

0:11:17 > 0:11:19T-REX ROARS

0:11:21 > 0:11:25A rescue flare? Who's going to help me here?

0:11:25 > 0:11:28There's not going to be anybody around here to rescue me

0:11:28 > 0:11:30for the next 65 million years!

0:11:30 > 0:11:31Um...

0:11:33 > 0:11:34Unless...

0:11:38 > 0:11:40Yes, it's working.

0:11:40 > 0:11:42They're distracted by the smoke.

0:11:42 > 0:11:44All right, here I go!

0:11:45 > 0:11:47Time to head back! Whoa!

0:11:48 > 0:11:49T-REX GRUNTS

0:11:53 > 0:11:54Whoa!

0:11:56 > 0:11:58CLOCK CHIMES

0:12:29 > 0:12:31CLOCK CHIMES

0:12:35 > 0:12:36Almost there, almost there.

0:12:40 > 0:12:42All right, hurry along now.

0:12:43 > 0:12:44Done!

0:12:45 > 0:12:49We don't want to turn into dinosaurs ourselves, do we?

0:12:55 > 0:12:58Nobody knows for sure, but we think that dinosaurs

0:12:58 > 0:13:02probably made lots of different sounds, just like modern animals do.

0:13:02 > 0:13:04Although, a little bit scarier.

0:13:04 > 0:13:09If Andy presses that red button you should hear what I think

0:13:09 > 0:13:13a Tyrannosaurus rex sounded like 65 million years ago.

0:13:17 > 0:13:20T-REX ROARS

0:13:21 > 0:13:23T-REX ROARS

0:13:25 > 0:13:26Thanks, Andy.

0:13:26 > 0:13:30I don't know how you did it, but those roars sounds so realistic.

0:13:30 > 0:13:33- It's almost as if you were right there with one.- Yeah.

0:13:35 > 0:13:37Shh! See you next time!
