0:00:12 > 0:00:14# Andy's Secret Hideout

0:00:14 > 0:00:17# It's a magical place With so much to see

0:00:17 > 0:00:20# Andy's Secret Hideout

0:00:20 > 0:00:22# Come and hide out with me. #

0:00:30 > 0:00:34Oh, hello, and welcome to my secret hideout.

0:00:34 > 0:00:36Oh. Who turned the lights out?

0:00:39 > 0:00:42Oh, no. There must be a power cut. Never mind.

0:00:42 > 0:00:45I'm sure I've got a torch somewhere in my drawers.

0:00:45 > 0:00:47Sometimes, when it's dark,

0:00:47 > 0:00:50you have to use your other senses to get around.

0:00:50 > 0:00:54Luckily, I'm nimble, like a cat. Meow!

0:00:54 > 0:00:56Oh! Ouch!

0:00:56 > 0:00:59Ah! Oh!

0:00:59 > 0:01:01My night-vision binoculars.

0:01:01 > 0:01:05Hey - I wonder how other animals get around in the dark.

0:01:08 > 0:01:10Ho-ho! Look at this!

0:01:10 > 0:01:13This guy is a tapir.

0:01:13 > 0:01:15Tapirs are like pigs.

0:01:15 > 0:01:17They live in South America.

0:01:17 > 0:01:20They don't mind the dark, because their noses are so good at

0:01:20 > 0:01:23sniffing out food in the undergrowth.

0:01:23 > 0:01:27Your nose works just as well in the dark as it does in the light.

0:01:27 > 0:01:30Now, I need to find that torch in my drawer.

0:01:30 > 0:01:34Hang on a minute - I know my smelly socks are near the drawer,

0:01:34 > 0:01:37so if I sniff them out, I'll be closer.

0:01:37 > 0:01:38Right.

0:01:38 > 0:01:40HE SNIFFS

0:01:43 > 0:01:46Ooh! I found them.

0:01:46 > 0:01:51A tapir's eyesight isn't very good, but they just take things slowly -

0:01:51 > 0:01:55sniffing, listening, and feeling their way round in the dark.

0:01:55 > 0:01:59If they took things that slowly during the day, though,

0:01:59 > 0:02:01they'd be lunch for a jaguar.

0:02:01 > 0:02:03Hmmm.

0:02:03 > 0:02:06Another way to see better in the dark

0:02:06 > 0:02:09is to open up your eyes really wide, to let more light in.

0:02:09 > 0:02:13Tarsiers have too much competition for food during the day,

0:02:13 > 0:02:17so instead, they sleep hidden away in their own secret hideouts.

0:02:17 > 0:02:20But at night, they wake up and use their massive,

0:02:20 > 0:02:24sensitive eyes to see their way around in the dark.

0:02:24 > 0:02:26Come on, let's do it. Ready?

0:02:26 > 0:02:28One, two, three...

0:02:28 > 0:02:32That's it. Right. Let's see if this works.

0:02:32 > 0:02:34KNOCK! Oh! Ouch.

0:02:34 > 0:02:38I think I need bigger eyes. Hang on, I recognise that sound.

0:02:38 > 0:02:40KNOCK! KNOCK!

0:02:40 > 0:02:43Hey! It's the wooden ladder to my bed.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46There's another animal that finds its food at night

0:02:46 > 0:02:48by knocking against wood.

0:02:48 > 0:02:51He doesn't need big eyes to see in the dark,

0:02:51 > 0:02:53or a big nose.

0:02:53 > 0:02:55All he needs are big ears

0:02:55 > 0:02:59and one really long finger.

0:02:59 > 0:03:01Do you know what it is?

0:03:01 > 0:03:03It's called an aye-aye.

0:03:03 > 0:03:07As in, "Aye-aye, swashbucklers."

0:03:07 > 0:03:11They use that really long finger to tap against trees,

0:03:11 > 0:03:13and when it sounds a bit hollow,

0:03:13 > 0:03:16that probably means there's a tasty grub

0:03:16 > 0:03:18or insect living in there.

0:03:18 > 0:03:20Nothing in here.

0:03:22 > 0:03:26Then it can use its strong teeth to bite through the bark

0:03:26 > 0:03:30and scoop them out with its long finger.

0:03:30 > 0:03:33OW! Oof.

0:03:33 > 0:03:37Just knelt on my fossil. That high-pitched squeal reminds me

0:03:37 > 0:03:41of another animal that's a master of the night - a bat.

0:03:41 > 0:03:45They can fly through the air in pitch-black and avoid bumping

0:03:45 > 0:03:47into walls or each other.

0:03:47 > 0:03:50They do it by making high-pitched squeaks

0:03:50 > 0:03:53and listening for an echo.

0:03:53 > 0:03:55If the echo takes a long time to come back,

0:03:55 > 0:03:58it means that there's nothing really nearby.

0:03:58 > 0:04:01But if the echo is really quick to come back,

0:04:01 > 0:04:05it means there's something very close, like a wall, or a drawer.

0:04:05 > 0:04:10Come on, let's try squeaking really loud and see if we get an echo.

0:04:10 > 0:04:11Ready - squeak!

0:04:11 > 0:04:16Like that. One, two three - SQUEAK!

0:04:16 > 0:04:17"SQUEAK" ECHOES

0:04:17 > 0:04:20Hey, something's close by. Let's try that again.

0:04:20 > 0:04:24One, two, three - SQUEAK!

0:04:24 > 0:04:26"SQUEAK" ECHOES

0:04:26 > 0:04:29There's the echo gain. Really quick.

0:04:29 > 0:04:30Which means...

0:04:32 > 0:04:36..the drawer is in front of me. And I've found my torch.

0:04:36 > 0:04:38Ah, fantastic.

0:04:38 > 0:04:41So, you see, there's no need to be scared of the dark.

0:04:41 > 0:04:44If you can't see anything and can't use your eyes,

0:04:44 > 0:04:48use your ears, use your sense of touch, or use your sense of smell.

0:04:50 > 0:04:54Oh, no. My batteries have run out!

0:04:54 > 0:04:56You can also call out like a bat.

0:04:56 > 0:04:59HELLO! CAN ANYONE HELP ME?

0:04:59 > 0:05:02No? Oh, well.

0:05:02 > 0:05:04It's time for me to go to bed now, anyway.

0:05:04 > 0:05:06And I know where bed is.

0:05:06 > 0:05:11Right. See you next time for another adventure in my secret hideout.

0:05:11 > 0:05:14Oh!

0:05:14 > 0:05:17Ooh! Goodnight, Andy! Ooh!

0:05:18 > 0:05:20# Andy's Secret Hideout

0:05:20 > 0:05:23# It's a magical place With so much to see

0:05:23 > 0:05:25# Andy's Secret Hideout

0:05:25 > 0:05:28# Come and hide out with me. #
