0:00:08 > 0:00:12Around the world there are millions of animals that have jobs.

0:00:12 > 0:00:16This is the show that brings you the most extraordinary,

0:00:16 > 0:00:19bizarre and unusual animals at work.

0:00:19 > 0:00:22Coming up...

0:00:22 > 0:00:27puppy performer Tinker's first time on stage as a magician's assistant.

0:00:27 > 0:00:30He'll have weed on the curtains.

0:00:30 > 0:00:35Tokkalas, the foster mum to abandoned big cats.

0:00:35 > 0:00:40And there's slippery business with Blythe, the champion charity worker.

0:00:55 > 0:00:59Hi. Welcome to Animals At Work, the show that talks to the animals.

0:00:59 > 0:01:03And if you're a dog... HOWLING

0:01:09 > 0:01:11Enjoy the show.

0:01:13 > 0:01:16First we're off to Morpeth in the north of England.

0:01:18 > 0:01:23This country cottage is home to Tinker the Maltese Terrier.

0:01:31 > 0:01:34Her boss, Christian, is a magician.

0:01:34 > 0:01:38He plans to train up tearaway Tinker to be his onstage assistant.

0:01:38 > 0:01:43This is Tinker, she's a two-year-old Maltese dog.

0:01:43 > 0:01:45Stay, stay...

0:01:45 > 0:01:48Her job tomorrow night is to come on stage

0:01:48 > 0:01:54and magically appear and pick out a card out of a pack of cards

0:01:54 > 0:01:57in front of the audience's eyes.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00Whether she's gonna do this, I've got no idea

0:02:00 > 0:02:03but fingers crossed...

0:02:05 > 0:02:08Turning Tinker into his assistant

0:02:08 > 0:02:11will be a tough act for Christian.

0:02:11 > 0:02:15This cheeky character needs to learn some new tricks.

0:02:15 > 0:02:18Tinker is the main addition to the show

0:02:18 > 0:02:21and she's actually gonna be the star.

0:02:21 > 0:02:24All the training that I do with any of the animals,

0:02:24 > 0:02:27I only do it if they want to do it.

0:02:27 > 0:02:30It's been pretty difficult and it's taken a lot of time.

0:02:30 > 0:02:35She has her moments like some dogs do.

0:02:35 > 0:02:37The kind of dogs that I use,

0:02:37 > 0:02:42it's very excitable and loves being on stage. They're born for the stage.

0:02:42 > 0:02:46Maltese terriers were once lapdogs favoured by royalty

0:02:46 > 0:02:51and paraded around their grand palaces. Mary Queen of Scots,

0:02:51 > 0:02:56Queen Victoria and Marie Antoinette pampered these much prized pooches.

0:02:56 > 0:03:02If her ancestors could behave in the presence of royalty,

0:03:02 > 0:03:05surely Tinker should be well-bred for life onstage.

0:03:05 > 0:03:08This is really a big moment, a big time for stardom.

0:03:08 > 0:03:11It's gonna be Tinker time.

0:03:11 > 0:03:17Tinker needs rigorous training to become Christian's new assistant

0:03:17 > 0:03:22and she has to follow in the paw prints of the great Pepsi.

0:03:22 > 0:03:24Well, this is Pepsi.

0:03:25 > 0:03:31Pepsi is the original star dog. In dog years, Pepsi is actually 105

0:03:31 > 0:03:35so I think he deserves a nice retirement

0:03:35 > 0:03:40and spend some time in the garden in some lovely, hot, sunny weather.

0:03:40 > 0:03:46Over his epic ten-year career, Pepsi mastered the ultimate trick -

0:03:46 > 0:03:48picking the right card out of a deck.

0:03:48 > 0:03:52Tinker will be let into the secrets of the Magic Circle

0:03:52 > 0:03:57and will also be the leader of all the other animals.

0:03:57 > 0:04:00It's taken years to perfect what I do.

0:04:08 > 0:04:13I've had some great times, fantastic shows and I enjoy doing it.

0:04:31 > 0:04:35The animals I've got are my pets but they also go on stage

0:04:35 > 0:04:37and perform as well.

0:04:37 > 0:04:39They love doing it

0:04:39 > 0:04:43and they're probably the best assistants a magician could have.

0:04:43 > 0:04:48But as Tinker starts her training, things aren't looking too good.

0:04:48 > 0:04:51Will Tinker be able to pull off the trick in time for the show?

0:04:51 > 0:04:55Good girl! Do you want to take the card again?

0:04:55 > 0:04:58Tinker? Tinker! Tinker! Tinker!

0:05:00 > 0:05:02Tinker, look.

0:05:05 > 0:05:08Now we're off to Namibia, West Africa.

0:05:13 > 0:05:16This Jack Russell terrier has an amazing job.

0:05:16 > 0:05:20Even though he's a boy, he's a stepmother to orphaned wild animals.

0:05:22 > 0:05:26He's doing a very good job. He teach them manners

0:05:26 > 0:05:28and it's good.

0:05:28 > 0:05:33You already can see that he's the dominant one of the group

0:05:33 > 0:05:37so they have a lot of respect for him and so he's doing a good job.

0:05:37 > 0:05:42Tokkolas lives in a rehabilitation centre for wild

0:05:42 > 0:05:46and potentially dangerous animals who need extra-special care.

0:05:46 > 0:05:49Most of them are problem animals.

0:05:49 > 0:05:54Mum's been shot and we get the babies and we raise them.

0:05:58 > 0:06:03Jack Russells were first bred over 200 years ago to dig out foxes.

0:06:03 > 0:06:06It's that inquisitive nature that makes Tokkolas

0:06:06 > 0:06:08perfect for this incredible job.

0:06:08 > 0:06:12He seems to have these wild animals wrapped around his paw

0:06:12 > 0:06:17but mothering the fastest cats in the animal kingdom isn't easy.

0:06:20 > 0:06:23Like most terriers, Tokkolas is pretty fearless.

0:06:26 > 0:06:31He not only parents the cubs, he also rules the park.

0:06:35 > 0:06:41His job is to teach them manners. If they annoy him too much...

0:06:41 > 0:06:45bite him too much, he has to bite them so they have to learn.

0:06:45 > 0:06:48If I say stop and I bite you, it's stop.

0:06:50 > 0:06:56There's a bit of a comparison towards what mummies would've done

0:06:56 > 0:07:01and that is to have order and rules and regulations in the group.

0:07:01 > 0:07:05I think that is what Tokkolas tries to teach them when he bites them

0:07:05 > 0:07:07and keeps them on the spot.

0:07:07 > 0:07:11Part of his job is to teach table manners.

0:07:15 > 0:07:18Tokkolas's job description also includes visiting schools.

0:07:20 > 0:07:26Tokkolas helps me also not only with animals but going out to schools

0:07:26 > 0:07:32or agriculture shows and we go out with the younger animals.

0:07:32 > 0:07:36He lets them feel more comfortable.

0:07:36 > 0:07:38Having Tokkolas there makes it easy

0:07:38 > 0:07:42for everyone to get up close and personal with live, wild animals.

0:07:52 > 0:07:56If you touch a lion in your life and grow up with this feeling

0:07:56 > 0:08:01that you've touched it, you're not gonna go and shoot it one day.

0:08:01 > 0:08:06MEWLING There's no end in sight for our new foster mum.

0:08:06 > 0:08:10Already there's a new litter of orphaned leopards

0:08:10 > 0:08:13for Tokkolas to whip into shape.

0:08:13 > 0:08:18Although keeping cubs clean can be a little messy.

0:08:18 > 0:08:22He's supposed to clean baby's mouth and also lick their bums.

0:08:22 > 0:08:28If you don't lick them or don't wash them, they won't do their things.

0:08:28 > 0:08:31They will explode.

0:08:31 > 0:08:35It makes a difference with him.

0:08:37 > 0:08:42I think we've got the best jobs we can ever ask for

0:08:42 > 0:08:46because we have a relaxed job, we're together the whole time

0:08:46 > 0:08:51and we have a lot of fun every day and if we can make a difference

0:08:51 > 0:08:53with one cheetah or four cheetahs

0:08:53 > 0:08:57and their mum's been shot and a dog and humans raise them,

0:08:57 > 0:09:01we can make this difference with four cheetahs surviving, we will do it.

0:09:05 > 0:09:10This amazing Jack Russell foster mum will be with Marlyse all the way

0:09:10 > 0:09:13on their incredible quest to rehabilitate orphaned big cats.

0:09:22 > 0:09:26We've been watching your videos of your pets doing wacky things.

0:09:26 > 0:09:28Take these two crazy critters.

0:10:07 > 0:10:12But don't worry, these hamsters have been professionally trained.

0:10:12 > 0:10:16Tic is right as rain and ready to do it all again.

0:10:19 > 0:10:24We're headed back to that talented terrier in England.

0:10:28 > 0:10:31Tinker the Maltese terrier is in training for her new job

0:10:31 > 0:10:34as a magician's assistant to boss Christian.

0:10:34 > 0:10:38Good girl! Do you want to take the card again? Tinker?

0:10:38 > 0:10:42She has a lot to prove because Pepsi,

0:10:42 > 0:10:46who used to work Tinker's shift, isn't easily impressed.

0:10:46 > 0:10:50Pepsi has done about 1,500 shows on stage.

0:10:50 > 0:10:56He's really mastered the art of being a performing magic dog

0:10:56 > 0:11:00but he's also been a fantastic pet and I love him so much.

0:11:00 > 0:11:05He is the master dog but Tinker's doing very well.

0:11:05 > 0:11:10In 24 hours, Tinker goes on stage for the very first time.

0:11:10 > 0:11:14But there's still a lot to do to make sure the show isn't dog poop.

0:11:14 > 0:11:19Tinker's role in the show tomorrow is a big one, to be honest.

0:11:19 > 0:11:25In this trick, Tinker has to pick out the 3 of hearts from Christian.

0:11:25 > 0:11:30Even after intense training, that's easier said than done.

0:11:30 > 0:11:35She might get this right, she might get it wrong, I don't know.

0:11:36 > 0:11:39Not going well.

0:11:39 > 0:11:43It's very, very difficult to train animals.

0:11:43 > 0:11:45I don't want to force her to do anything she doesn't want to do

0:11:45 > 0:11:49so I'm just gonna let her take her time.

0:11:49 > 0:11:51Take the card. Oh no, Tinker.

0:11:51 > 0:11:54Wrong again.

0:11:54 > 0:11:56She's got the wrong card.

0:11:56 > 0:11:58Here's a card!

0:11:58 > 0:12:01She's still not concentrating.

0:12:01 > 0:12:05And if she wants to wander off, she just wanders off.

0:12:05 > 0:12:08Good girl!

0:12:08 > 0:12:10Good girl, in one. Come back here then!

0:12:10 > 0:12:14Do you see the card? Look at the card.

0:12:14 > 0:12:17How's it going? Absolute nightmare.

0:12:17 > 0:12:18Is she not responding to you?

0:12:18 > 0:12:21I look after the animals largely.

0:12:21 > 0:12:28I do the roadie's work. I'm the oldest roadie in the business.

0:12:28 > 0:12:32Take out the card. Come on, good girl.

0:12:32 > 0:12:35Take the 3 of hearts. Good girl!

0:12:35 > 0:12:38Not completely wrong but not right either.

0:12:38 > 0:12:41Come back here.

0:12:41 > 0:12:45I think that Tinker has what it takes

0:12:45 > 0:12:49to be a magic star on the stage. Things can go wrong though.

0:12:49 > 0:12:51Oh, good girl!

0:12:51 > 0:12:56Christian may be optimistic but Pepsi is definitely not convinced.

0:12:56 > 0:12:58I think she's very nervous.

0:12:58 > 0:13:01I'm nervous, all right?

0:13:01 > 0:13:07If she can go on and she can wander on stage and she can see me on stage,

0:13:07 > 0:13:09I'll be happy with that.

0:13:09 > 0:13:12If the card trick goes right, that's a bonus.

0:13:12 > 0:13:14Good girl. Show the camera.

0:13:14 > 0:13:17Got it right at last.

0:13:17 > 0:13:21There's just a few hours to go before it's showtime for Tinker.

0:13:21 > 0:13:25Was Christian right to give her the job of magician's assistant,

0:13:25 > 0:13:29or will it end up a right old dog's mess? Join us later.

0:13:29 > 0:13:31He'll have weed on the curtains.

0:13:37 > 0:13:41There are some charity workers who are mad fer... Agh! Do it again.

0:13:41 > 0:13:44Agh! Oh!

0:13:44 > 0:13:48There are some charities who are mad fer... Ah!

0:13:48 > 0:13:53There are some...who are mad for ferrets...

0:13:54 > 0:13:58Our next animals at work are mad ferrets!

0:14:04 > 0:14:08Now we're in Kent in England, looking for a ferret.

0:14:08 > 0:14:11This slippery creature is busy gearing up for a day's work

0:14:11 > 0:14:14at a curious kind of contest.

0:14:14 > 0:14:16Blythe is a white ferret.

0:14:16 > 0:14:18She is a top racing ferret.

0:14:18 > 0:14:22But these aren't any old races, and Blythe isn't any old ferret.

0:14:22 > 0:14:27Blythe is a champion racing ferret with an unbeaten track record.

0:14:36 > 0:14:40Blythe is a really good racing ferret because she's fidgety

0:14:40 > 0:14:44and she likes to run about and she's full of energy.

0:14:51 > 0:14:56She's kind of the boss of everyone, and she tells everyone what to do.

0:15:01 > 0:15:05But when Blythe is annoyed, she has a way of letting Jack know.

0:15:05 > 0:15:09She makes, like, a little hissing noise.

0:15:09 > 0:15:12I suppose it's, "Back off, this is my area."

0:15:12 > 0:15:16I'm really proud of Blythe for what she does. She's my star runner.

0:15:16 > 0:15:19And the pressure's on - today is race day.

0:15:19 > 0:15:22If this veteran wins, she's not just winning money for charity,

0:15:22 > 0:15:27she also gets to keep her title of ferret-racing champion.

0:15:27 > 0:15:32When she first came in, I was the only person who could pick her up,

0:15:32 > 0:15:34cos she was too scared.

0:15:34 > 0:15:39When Blythe is happy, her tail goes prickly like a loo brush.

0:15:39 > 0:15:44Ferrets have always been given jobs that make the most of their speed.

0:15:44 > 0:15:48The Ancient Romans used them for chasing away rabbits and vermin.

0:15:48 > 0:15:54But ferrets also like to snooze and can sleep for up to 20 hours a day.

0:16:02 > 0:16:06Although they do wake up long enough to go racing.

0:16:06 > 0:16:12Ferrets are very fast animals and once they've started they won't stop.

0:16:12 > 0:16:18Racing allows ferrets to just, like, run round and be free

0:16:18 > 0:16:20like they would in the wild.

0:16:20 > 0:16:25How does Jack feel about Blythe's chances in today's big charity race?

0:16:25 > 0:16:29She'll probably win. But if she does lose,

0:16:29 > 0:16:32I'll still like her in the same way.

0:16:32 > 0:16:34This last-minute warm-up is crucial

0:16:34 > 0:16:38in getting Blythe's nimble feet into top gear.

0:16:38 > 0:16:43Each ferret races through a separate tube in the fastest time possible.

0:16:43 > 0:16:46Will she scurry to victory today?

0:16:46 > 0:16:50For me, it's very important for Blythe to win this race,

0:16:50 > 0:16:55because I think the charity needs a lot more money to help rescue ferrets

0:16:55 > 0:16:58and give them new homes.

0:16:58 > 0:17:03It's a crucial race for Blythe if she wants to retain

0:17:03 > 0:17:06her all-time championship status in the ferret world.

0:17:06 > 0:17:10You put the ferret in the starting box here.

0:17:10 > 0:17:15You lift the slide up. The ferrets go all the way down,

0:17:15 > 0:17:19over the swimming pool, over the seesaw, over the bridge

0:17:19 > 0:17:23to the other end, then they come all the way down and, when they get here,

0:17:23 > 0:17:27all four feet must be on the piece of wood for them to win.

0:17:27 > 0:17:30But things could go pear-shaped.

0:17:30 > 0:17:33Blythe has an arch rival. There's another slippery customer

0:17:33 > 0:17:37who might scupper Blythe's unbeaten track record.

0:17:37 > 0:17:39This is Sophie, and this is Honey.

0:17:39 > 0:17:43Honey's the biggest competition here, cos she's very, very fast.

0:17:43 > 0:17:45And hopefully she won't beat Blythe.

0:17:50 > 0:17:56The tension mounts as Blythe tries to psyche out the competition.

0:17:56 > 0:18:02Welcome to the Kent International Ferret Racing Championships!

0:18:02 > 0:18:07Blythe's already at the swimming pool. She takes it in her stride.

0:18:07 > 0:18:09Meanwhile, Honey is at the seesaw.

0:18:09 > 0:18:12But look at Blythe. She's already zoomed to the bridge.

0:18:12 > 0:18:14She even stops to check out the competition.

0:18:14 > 0:18:19Jack's looking happy as Blythe gets to the halfway mark.

0:18:19 > 0:18:21Look at her go!

0:18:21 > 0:18:23Can she do it? Yes, she can!

0:18:23 > 0:18:27She is the unbeaten champion.

0:18:29 > 0:18:32And she's won again!

0:18:32 > 0:18:35First to the finish line, Blythe!

0:18:35 > 0:18:37It's not a pipe dream any more.

0:18:37 > 0:18:42Blythe can keep her undisputed title of ferret racing champion.

0:18:45 > 0:18:49From ferret victory in England, we're headed to the USA

0:18:49 > 0:18:52for another kind of race in Wyoming.

0:18:52 > 0:18:54How's this for a gang of workmates?

0:18:54 > 0:18:59They're mixed-breed huskies, and as a team they have one tough job -

0:18:59 > 0:19:03sled-racing. They're aged between three and seven years old.

0:19:03 > 0:19:07Their boss is 15-year-old Rachel, and this is Johnny.

0:19:09 > 0:19:13Johnny is maybe one of the best dogs that ever walked the Earth.

0:19:13 > 0:19:17He won the North American three years in a row,

0:19:17 > 0:19:22which is just unheard of, and he's run Wyoming four or five times now.

0:19:22 > 0:19:25So he will be my main leader.

0:19:25 > 0:19:28Rachel and Johnny are getting ready

0:19:28 > 0:19:32to compete in an exhausting 500-mile, 12-day dog-sled race

0:19:32 > 0:19:34through Wyoming.

0:19:34 > 0:19:36Johnny!

0:19:36 > 0:19:41Rachel is the only teenager in the competition and she's almost blind.

0:19:41 > 0:19:45She can see basic shapes, but only to a distance of ten feet.

0:19:45 > 0:19:50She's determined to be the first blind teenager to attempt the race.

0:19:51 > 0:19:56I can handle anything that gets thrown at me just like anyone else.

0:19:56 > 0:20:00It is unusual, without a doubt,

0:20:00 > 0:20:05for a legally blind kid to compete against the best in the world.

0:20:05 > 0:20:09They're off to the International Pedigree Stage Stop dog-sled race.

0:20:12 > 0:20:16This is one of the longest, most difficult trails in the world.

0:20:16 > 0:20:21They'll climb up to 10,000 feet in the mountainous terrain

0:20:21 > 0:20:25and then face dangerous descents. As the only teenager,

0:20:25 > 0:20:28Rachel is up against world-class, experienced mushers

0:20:28 > 0:20:33and has to rely heavily on Johnny's expertise and knowledge.
