0:00:23 > 0:00:25for truffle hunting...

0:00:25 > 0:00:28I'm trying to make her sit. Nellie, sit.

0:00:29 > 0:00:31..an extreme doggy athlete

0:00:31 > 0:00:33about to take on his next adventure challenge...

0:00:35 > 0:00:38..and a swimming sports star who's practising

0:00:40 > 0:00:41Enjoy the show.

0:00:57 > 0:00:59We've caught a whiff of one animal at work

0:00:59 > 0:01:01who is certainly not to be sniffed at.

0:01:02 > 0:01:05I knew I should have had a bath this morning.

0:01:05 > 0:01:06Sorry, Dennis.

0:01:08 > 0:01:12We're joining a snooping spaniel at the UK's first Truffle Championships.

0:01:15 > 0:01:17We're off to Wiltshire in England.

0:01:23 > 0:01:27In the heart of rural Wiltshire, there's a rare breed of dog

0:01:27 > 0:01:29on a gourmet mission.

0:01:29 > 0:01:33This special Sussex spaniel has an exceptional job.

0:01:34 > 0:01:37In just two months she's going to be taking part

0:01:37 > 0:01:41in the first ever British Truffle Hunting Championships.

0:01:41 > 0:01:44One of the most expensive foods money can buy.

0:01:45 > 0:01:48Sit, sit. Obey.

0:01:48 > 0:01:52I'm Sophie, I'm 13 years old and I'm Nellie's handler

0:01:52 > 0:01:55and I'm training her to be a truffle hunter.

0:01:55 > 0:01:58Basically she has to go around woods, good girl,

0:01:58 > 0:02:00and sniff out these, which are truffles,

0:02:00 > 0:02:04and tell us where they are, so we can dig them out,

0:02:04 > 0:02:06cos they're valuable.

0:02:06 > 0:02:07Yeah.

0:02:07 > 0:02:09Nellie! Nellie!

0:02:09 > 0:02:11Truffles are referred to as "diamonds of the kitchen."

0:02:11 > 0:02:15They grow in the earth to about the size of a ping-pong ball.

0:02:17 > 0:02:20Nellie! Truffles!

0:02:20 > 0:02:25They are massively popular, massively strong tasting

0:02:25 > 0:02:28and massively expensive.

0:02:28 > 0:02:31A kilo of truffles can cost £200.

0:02:32 > 0:02:33I felt pretty stupid

0:02:33 > 0:02:38when I found out that they're not just chocolates.

0:02:39 > 0:02:43At home with the rest of her clan, Nellie is a bit of a let down.

0:02:43 > 0:02:45She's not the shining star at home.

0:02:45 > 0:02:47I'm trying to make her sit.

0:02:47 > 0:02:48Nellie, sit.

0:02:52 > 0:02:53How do you make them sit?

0:02:54 > 0:02:57Nellie lives alongside six brothers and sisters

0:02:57 > 0:03:00who are renowned for their beauty in the dog show world.

0:03:00 > 0:03:08Meet Crufts contenders Onslow, Betty, Thelma, Sybil, Dizzy and Fred.

0:03:08 > 0:03:10Nellie hasn't always been the runt of the litter.

0:03:10 > 0:03:13When she was born she was named after Nellie the elephant

0:03:13 > 0:03:15because she was the heaviest pup in the pack.

0:03:15 > 0:03:17# Off she went with a trumpety-trump,

0:03:17 > 0:03:18# Trump, trump, trump! #

0:03:18 > 0:03:20But she grew up to be the smallest.

0:03:20 > 0:03:23But that's not the only reason

0:03:23 > 0:03:26Nellie hasn't been invited to the family pretty party.

0:03:26 > 0:03:29Nellie's not doing showing because she has two crooked teeth.

0:03:29 > 0:03:32These two teeth here.

0:03:32 > 0:03:36Taking part in the truffle hunting championships

0:03:36 > 0:03:39is Nellie's chance to show her family that she is just as good as them -

0:03:39 > 0:03:41just a little bit different.

0:03:41 > 0:03:44It's important that she has a job and she gets to do this.

0:03:44 > 0:03:46This is her chance to shine.

0:03:46 > 0:03:50Being a truffle hunter should be the ideal job for her.

0:03:50 > 0:03:53Like all spaniels, Nellie is good with people and loves being busy.

0:03:55 > 0:03:58But her extra special talent is in her nose.

0:03:58 > 0:04:01Whenever we take her around she's always sniffing.

0:04:01 > 0:04:04She sniffs a lot, more than they usually do.

0:04:04 > 0:04:07Noses are to spaniels like eyes are to humans.

0:04:07 > 0:04:10They use them to smell everything.

0:04:10 > 0:04:12Usually truffle hunting in open ground

0:04:12 > 0:04:16is carried out by specially trained dogs,

0:04:16 > 0:04:18but Nellie is brand new to the game.

0:04:18 > 0:04:21With only eight weeks until the championship,

0:04:21 > 0:04:23she's got a lot of learning to do.

0:04:23 > 0:04:26To get Nellie in fine snuffling truffling form,

0:04:26 > 0:04:29Sophie is taking her to a truffle hunting expert.

0:04:29 > 0:04:33They will go on a crash training course that will teach Nellie

0:04:33 > 0:04:36to divert her attention away from other smells

0:04:36 > 0:04:38and towards the goal - the truffle!

0:04:38 > 0:04:40I'm putting all my trust in Nellie.

0:04:40 > 0:04:43I'm not sure how stiff the competition will be,

0:04:43 > 0:04:44but it will probably be quite stiff.

0:04:44 > 0:04:47We have quite high expectations of her, really.

0:04:47 > 0:04:50Truffle hunting is going to be, like, her calling.

0:04:54 > 0:04:57From sniffing to surfing, we're off to Cornwall.

0:05:05 > 0:05:07In the sand and surf of coastal Cornwall,

0:05:07 > 0:05:11lives a 15lb adventure fanatic.

0:05:12 > 0:05:17Meet Part Ex, a Jack Russell Terrier who lives life on the edge.

0:05:19 > 0:05:23Part Ex holds the Guinness world record for most extreme sports dog.

0:05:23 > 0:05:28With his adventure buddy JP he kayaks, he rock climbs,

0:05:28 > 0:05:31he surfs, and he cliff-jumps!

0:05:33 > 0:05:36That's right. Ciff-jumps.

0:05:42 > 0:05:46Whenever we go near moving water, Part Ex gets really, really excited.

0:05:46 > 0:05:50I think what's going on in his head is "Yay! Time to go and play!"

0:05:52 > 0:05:55What he tries to do, he tries to woof and bite the wave,

0:05:55 > 0:05:58and as you can see on the way out, he'll just try and yap, bite,

0:05:58 > 0:06:02grab the wave and it's impossible, you know, he can't grab the wave.

0:06:02 > 0:06:04He often ends up swallowing quite a bit.

0:06:06 > 0:06:08Even JP was surprised when he found out

0:06:08 > 0:06:12that his puppy pal was an enthusiastic natural at watersports.

0:06:14 > 0:06:16Four or five years ago I was being filmed surfing

0:06:16 > 0:06:20and Part Ex was along for the ride and going up and down the beach.

0:06:20 > 0:06:22I happened to drag my board out behind me,

0:06:22 > 0:06:25thinking that Part Ex was safe on the beach.

0:06:25 > 0:06:28I turned around and there he was on the board on all fours,

0:06:28 > 0:06:30ready to play, so I thought "Oh, I'll give this a go!"

0:06:30 > 0:06:33I tried surfing in two or three times and from then on

0:06:33 > 0:06:35he's been surfing with me all the time.

0:06:39 > 0:06:41They think they are bigger, better, stronger, faster

0:06:41 > 0:06:45than anything else around them. Even though they're really small,

0:06:45 > 0:06:48they think they're bigger than any Rottweiler that's around

0:06:48 > 0:06:50and they'll challenge and take on anything.

0:06:53 > 0:06:56Today Part Ex is ready to make a splash

0:06:56 > 0:06:59at the brand new extreme sport - waterskiing!

0:06:59 > 0:07:03I've chosen waterskiing cos it's another water-related activity.

0:07:03 > 0:07:04I know that he really likes that.

0:07:04 > 0:07:07I'm worried about the speed of the boat

0:07:07 > 0:07:10and if he jumps off or falls off while it's going really fast,

0:07:10 > 0:07:14but he's tough little cookie and he always comes back for more,

0:07:14 > 0:07:16so we'll just see. We'll take it at his pace.

0:07:18 > 0:07:20Will this crazy, courageous athlete

0:07:20 > 0:07:23be able to stay on the narrow board behind a speeding boat?

0:07:23 > 0:07:26The way that we're planning to take on the waterskiing

0:07:26 > 0:07:29is to first go surfing on the big board where both of us can get on

0:07:29 > 0:07:33and I can see how he's doing, see if he enjoys it or not.

0:07:33 > 0:07:36If he does well on that we're gonna move on to the little board

0:07:36 > 0:07:39and he's gonna do it all by himself without any help from me.

0:07:39 > 0:07:42MUSIC: "Wipeout" by The Surfaris

0:07:51 > 0:07:55He stays on the board! Part Ex can add another sport to his name!

0:07:55 > 0:07:57This dog can ski!

0:08:03 > 0:08:06Part Ex seems worried about losing his board buddy.

0:08:10 > 0:08:13Wait a minute - no he's loving it!

0:08:13 > 0:08:16Part Ex has no trouble keeping his balance, unlike JP.

0:08:18 > 0:08:19Man overboard!

0:08:20 > 0:08:21Again.

0:08:21 > 0:08:24Little Part Ex has mastered the big board.

0:08:24 > 0:08:26Time to take it to the next level.

0:08:33 > 0:08:37The extreme doggy athlete triumphs again!

0:08:40 > 0:08:43I think the next thing on Part Ex's list must be something like

0:08:43 > 0:08:47parachuting tandem from a great height, or something

0:08:47 > 0:08:49wild and extreme like that.

0:08:49 > 0:08:52But that's work for another sunny day.

0:08:52 > 0:08:57For now, Part Ex is clocking off and doing a little extreme napping.

0:09:02 > 0:09:05We've been looking out for your home videos

0:09:05 > 0:09:07of what animals get up to on the weekend.

0:09:07 > 0:09:10Take these two racing ferrets from Kent, England.

0:09:10 > 0:09:12- This is Lala.- And this is Crystal.

0:09:12 > 0:09:14Ferrets have the most fun

0:09:14 > 0:09:16when they can race in a place shaped like a tunnel.

0:09:33 > 0:09:35And Crystal wins by a ferrety furry nose!

0:09:40 > 0:09:44Back to the super-sniffer Nellie in Wiltshire.

0:09:44 > 0:09:47Nellie the Sussex spaniel is on track

0:09:47 > 0:09:51for her new job as a professional truffle hunter.

0:09:51 > 0:09:54So basically she has to go around woods, good girl,

0:09:54 > 0:09:57and sniff out these, which are truffles.

0:09:57 > 0:10:00It's been a slow start for smelling Nellie.

0:10:00 > 0:10:01Nellie! Truffles!

0:10:01 > 0:10:05If she is to have any chance of winning

0:10:05 > 0:10:07the British Truffle Championships

0:10:07 > 0:10:10she has to put her nose to the ground for her first day of training.

0:10:10 > 0:10:16She also has to prove to her family that she can live up to the breed.

0:10:16 > 0:10:19I'm pretty nervous because I've never done this before.

0:10:19 > 0:10:22These luscious grounds are specifically designed

0:10:22 > 0:10:25for the immense task, and the dogs in training will be taught

0:10:25 > 0:10:28to look for the truffle scent by expert tutor, Marion.

0:10:28 > 0:10:33This exercise is more on scent recognition

0:10:33 > 0:10:38and strengthening the dog's response with its indication.

0:10:38 > 0:10:41For the first lesson, Marion puts some truffle oil in a cup

0:10:41 > 0:10:44so that the dogs can recognize the scent.

0:10:46 > 0:10:48Step one, the dog must walk and sniff.

0:10:50 > 0:10:54Step two, the dog must snuffle truffle and sit.

0:10:54 > 0:10:55Well done.

0:10:55 > 0:10:57Step three, the dog is rewarded.

0:10:57 > 0:11:01So what we have to do is make sure the dog

0:11:01 > 0:11:05is really, really, really motivated to find a truffle.

0:11:05 > 0:11:08But Nellie slept through the lesson.

0:11:08 > 0:11:10For your dog to learn anything, it needs to be awake.

0:11:10 > 0:11:14Sleepy Nellie is the first dog to give it a go.

0:11:15 > 0:11:17She masters walking and sniffing.

0:11:17 > 0:11:20Sit. Sit. Nellie, sit.

0:11:20 > 0:11:23- But sitting has always been a bit of a problem for Nellie.- Nellie!

0:11:23 > 0:11:27Next is Gabby the King Charles spaniel, who goes off like a shot.

0:11:27 > 0:11:29- Go on, Gabby.- Come on, Gabby.

0:11:31 > 0:11:32Good girl.

0:11:32 > 0:11:36Nellie takes the opportunity to have a good think about the lessons.

0:11:36 > 0:11:39- Sit. Good girl.- That was beautiful.

0:11:39 > 0:11:43After Gabby's star performance, Nellie bounces back.

0:11:43 > 0:11:51Come on, Nellie! There's a good girl. Sit. Nellie, sit.

0:11:51 > 0:11:55Oh, well done. Oh, she really looks pleased with herself.

0:11:55 > 0:11:59It's a good comeback, but Gabby is obviously a clear rival.

0:11:59 > 0:12:02Her owner gives her a pep talk. How will she respond?

0:12:06 > 0:12:09Oh, that was very nice.

0:12:09 > 0:12:10She's a very clever little dog.

0:12:10 > 0:12:14She seems to use her nose really well and she's very enthusiastic.

0:12:14 > 0:12:16Nellie's a little bit too laid back.

0:12:16 > 0:12:19Nellie's proved she can sniff her way to success,

0:12:19 > 0:12:22but she really needs to stay focused on the job at hand

0:12:22 > 0:12:24and not spend so much time in meditation.

0:12:24 > 0:12:28When we stop playing games this afternoon,

0:12:28 > 0:12:30she might think that's more worthwhile.

0:12:30 > 0:12:34For the second part of the training, the class are led outside.

0:12:34 > 0:12:38Nellie must keep her concentration centred on the lesson or her chances

0:12:38 > 0:12:43at the championship and her new job could be whiffed away.

0:12:43 > 0:12:44I think she's going to do OK.

0:12:44 > 0:12:48I think Nellie's, you know, she's got potential,

0:12:48 > 0:12:52but she seems to have to work a lot harder than Gabby naturally does.

0:12:52 > 0:12:53Come on!

0:12:53 > 0:12:57Marion has hidden a truffle somewhere in this two acres of land.

0:12:57 > 0:13:01All the dogs have to do is sniff it out to graduate from truffle school.

0:13:01 > 0:13:03Go, Nellie! Find truffles.

0:13:03 > 0:13:07Can Nellie make a comeback and do it better than teacher's pet Gabby?

0:13:07 > 0:13:10Nellie! Nellie!

0:13:10 > 0:13:14Truffles then. Find truffles.

0:13:14 > 0:13:18Oooh! She misses it completely.

0:13:18 > 0:13:19Nellie.

0:13:19 > 0:13:23It's time to call it quits. Gabby's turn is next.

0:13:28 > 0:13:34Gabby's done it again! Oh, dear, and Nellie is feeling the strain.

0:13:34 > 0:13:36If she's in the competition

0:13:36 > 0:13:40it's going to be very hard to compete against her, yeah.

0:13:44 > 0:13:48Look, there is definitely something fishy going on here.

0:13:48 > 0:13:50They've just handed me a script.

0:13:50 > 0:13:52Listen to what it... Listen. I'm quoting this.

0:13:52 > 0:13:58"Join us on Animals At Work as we go flipping wild under the water

0:13:58 > 0:14:00"and meet a small-scale soccer star."

0:14:00 > 0:14:02A fish that can play football?

0:14:02 > 0:14:04Do you expect me to swallow this hook, line and sinker?

0:14:04 > 0:14:07What position is he gonna play?

0:14:08 > 0:14:09Goalfish.

0:14:13 > 0:14:19And we're off to Pennsylvania to meet an unexpected underwater genius.

0:14:24 > 0:14:27Once upon a time in Gibsonia, a brother and sister had a problem.

0:14:27 > 0:14:29Go fetch, Kendall.

0:14:30 > 0:14:33- No. You go get it.- No. You get it.

0:14:33 > 0:14:35- No. You get it. - No. You have to go get it.

0:14:37 > 0:14:38They had no pet to play with.

0:14:38 > 0:14:41I'm bored. This is kinda...

0:14:44 > 0:14:46- I'm so bored.- So am I.

0:14:48 > 0:14:50- You get it.- No you go get it.

0:14:52 > 0:14:56At home, their father, a computer scientist,

0:14:56 > 0:14:57found a fishy fix to this predicament.

0:15:01 > 0:15:03Hey, Comet, how are you doing today?

0:15:03 > 0:15:07Meet Comet, a two year old common goldfish who's training

0:15:07 > 0:15:11to set a record as the world's smartest fish.

0:15:11 > 0:15:14MUSIC: "Chelsea Dagger" by The Fratellis

0:15:19 > 0:15:23We're planning on entering Comet into the Guinness Book

0:15:23 > 0:15:25for world's smartest fish.

0:15:25 > 0:15:27Hello, my name is Comet.

0:15:27 > 0:15:28What's yours?

0:15:28 > 0:15:32He really is curious and when you come to the tank

0:15:32 > 0:15:35he'll swim up and wiggle his tail.

0:15:35 > 0:15:39Well, Comet likes food and attention I think.

0:15:39 > 0:15:42He's pretty playful.

0:15:53 > 0:15:59The other employee in Coach Comet's fish school is his buddy, Brainiac.

0:15:59 > 0:16:02Hello, I'm Brainiac. Hi, hi.

0:16:02 > 0:16:05We call him Comet's sidekick.

0:16:05 > 0:16:07# Wild thing... #

0:16:10 > 0:16:12Brainiac is really not very smart.

0:16:12 > 0:16:16- Huh?- He looks like he has a big brain, but I think that's all fat.

0:16:16 > 0:16:19- Huh?- He's not as smart as Comet is.

0:16:20 > 0:16:24The chief fish trainer rewards his four-inch employee

0:16:24 > 0:16:26with positive reinforcement,

0:16:26 > 0:16:29which means clever Comet gets food from the training wand

0:16:29 > 0:16:31whenever he completes a trick.

0:16:31 > 0:16:34I've never seen Comet not be able to do a trick.

0:16:34 > 0:16:35Come on, Comet.

0:16:35 > 0:16:38I'm sure if we did a really complicated trick

0:16:38 > 0:16:41it would be really hard for him to learn it, but he probably could.

0:16:41 > 0:16:44Comet will do fetch just like dogs do.

0:16:46 > 0:16:50People don't think that fish have any intelligence whatsoever

0:16:50 > 0:16:54and when you tell them that they can do tricks better than many dogs,
