0:05:05 > 0:05:08..can this photo model walk the walk or is he all talk?
0:05:13 > 0:05:16And now to the countryside of South Carolina.
0:05:23 > 0:05:26COCK CROWS
0:05:26 > 0:05:31Welcome to Freehaven Farm, home to a strange mix of livestock.
0:05:31 > 0:05:33FARMYARD SOUNDS
0:05:40 > 0:05:42All managed by this furry fellow.
0:05:46 > 0:05:49Canaan is a six-year-old Bouvier des Flandres.
0:05:49 > 0:05:54He is responsible for helping farm owner Caron keep things running smoothly.
0:05:54 > 0:05:55There's always something to do.
0:05:55 > 0:06:01He's with me, whether it's feeding, hauling water, hauling hay, there's always something to do on a farm.
0:06:01 > 0:06:05He's relaxed doing it and he gets excited when we chase something.
0:06:05 > 0:06:09That's when he really gets happy cos he gets to get into his element then.
0:06:11 > 0:06:15There are ten other dogs and 200 other animals on the farm,
0:06:15 > 0:06:20but Caron selected Canaan to be her number one right-hand guy.
0:06:20 > 0:06:26He's earned the position by being dominant over the other animals without being aggressive.
0:06:26 > 0:06:31Bouviers are gentle herding dogs who move slowly so they don't scare the animals they are working with.
0:06:35 > 0:06:38Canaan is a natural leader.
0:06:38 > 0:06:40Farm Manager Canaan's duties include
0:06:40 > 0:06:45watching for escapees while Caron cleans stalls.
0:06:47 > 0:06:50Rounding up the barnyard animals to be fed.
0:06:55 > 0:06:57Come on, boys.
0:06:57 > 0:07:02Keeping a keen eye on the miniature horses and llamas while Caron completes a headcount.
0:07:07 > 0:07:10Canaan makes sure no-one is missing.
0:07:10 > 0:07:15Turkeys, pygmy goats, llamas all present and accounted for.
0:07:15 > 0:07:17Canaan also oversees security at the farm.
0:07:17 > 0:07:21He makes sure the residents are safe from wild animals.
0:07:23 > 0:07:26At night, Canaan guards the house.
0:07:26 > 0:07:32He's on the front porch. If anybody pulls up that I don't recognize, he will definitely give a warning bark.
0:07:34 > 0:07:39Anything that comes up whether it's animal or human, all the Bouvs are alert to that.
0:07:40 > 0:07:43But the most important of Canaan's jobs is herding.
0:07:43 > 0:07:46He herds birds. Well, emus actually.
0:07:47 > 0:07:54Emu-herding is a huge responsibility, as Freehaven is the largest emu farm in South Carolina.
0:07:54 > 0:07:59And Canaan has to take great care, because emus are complicated creatures to manage.
0:07:59 > 0:08:02Emu necks are fragile so it's important to keep them calm.
0:08:02 > 0:08:07- An out-of-control emu is clumsy and can hurt itself.- Easy. Easy.
0:08:07 > 0:08:10Emus have sharp toenails and can kick if cornered.
0:08:10 > 0:08:15Canaan must watch his safety and Caron's at all times.
0:08:15 > 0:08:20And Canaan certainly has his paw full with this wild bunch!
0:08:22 > 0:08:28Oh, no! Emu escape! Super Canaan to the rescue!
0:08:31 > 0:08:34Easy! Easy!
0:08:36 > 0:08:37Easy!
0:08:39 > 0:08:42Today is an important day for farmhand Canaan.
0:08:42 > 0:08:49It is the end of the laying season for the emus so he must help find and collect all their eggs.
0:08:49 > 0:08:54Freehaven Farm is large and leafy, so it's easy to lose an emu egg around here.
0:08:54 > 0:08:59By working his whiffer, Canaan can cover a lot of possible egg areas very quickly.
0:08:59 > 0:09:03Good boy! Good boy!
0:09:03 > 0:09:05Find some more.
0:09:05 > 0:09:10The eggs are safely collected and it's time for Canaan's favourite reward - a chicken egg!
0:09:10 > 0:09:12Good.
0:09:12 > 0:09:14Good stuff!
0:09:14 > 0:09:16I've had this farm for 15 years.
0:09:16 > 0:09:21I've had Canaan for six. He has made my life much easier on the farm.
0:09:21 > 0:09:24He's the best buddy I could possibly get,
0:09:24 > 0:09:27and if there's such a thing with a four-legged soulmate, I've got one in him.
0:09:27 > 0:09:30Egg-cellent work today, Canaan!
0:09:36 > 0:09:41We've been looking out for your home videos of what animals get up to on the weekend,

0:09:44 > 0:09:46skunk!
0:09:46 > 0:09:48Meet Gizmo from Northumberland, England.
0:09:48 > 0:09:53He likes the feel of sand between his toes, all twenty of them.
0:09:53 > 0:09:57# She says, hey babe take a walk on the wild side
0:09:57 > 0:10:03# She said, hey honey take a walk on the wild side. #
0:10:03 > 0:10:07Nothing says beach holiday like surf, sand and skunk.
0:10:14 > 0:10:17And we're back to New York City.
0:10:19 > 0:10:24Ernie the canine model is about to start his first contract as a catwalk model.
0:10:24 > 0:10:30He's modelled for photos before, but this is the first time he has ever walked the catwalk.

0:10:54 > 0:10:56Ernie, let's go.
0:10:56 > 0:11:01Outside the rehearsal, New York's fashion elite assemble and run in small circles.
0:11:04 > 0:11:08OK, models, social hour is over. Time to get down to business.
0:11:14 > 0:11:17First the models meet industry experts for wardrobe fittings.
0:11:17 > 0:11:19Nice!
0:11:19 > 0:11:22And fur stylings.
0:11:22 > 0:11:25Ooh, great hair!
0:11:25 > 0:11:28And make-up consultations.
0:11:28 > 0:11:30Pretty!
0:11:30 > 0:11:35And what does this gorgeous guy have in common with these two-legged supermodels?
0:11:37 > 0:11:38Good looks.
0:11:38 > 0:11:42Ernie has that in common with the supermodel.
0:11:42 > 0:11:43# You're beautiful
0:11:43 > 0:11:46# You're beautiful... #
0:11:46 > 0:11:51Ernie's fine breeding has given him another modelling asset - his two-coloured eyes.
0:11:51 > 0:11:55The blue eye lets in more light for better night or stage vision.
0:11:55 > 0:11:59The amber eye lets in less light for better sunlight or spotlight vision.
0:11:59 > 0:12:06Ernie has the best of both visual worlds, and can work day and night herding sheep or modelling.
0:12:06 > 0:12:10It's time for a full doggy dress rehearsal.
0:12:10 > 0:12:13Ernie tries on a fetching black jacket with red accents.

0:12:15 > 0:12:17This is it.
0:12:17 > 0:12:19POP MUSIC PLAYS
0:12:23 > 0:12:27John and Ernie work on their walk together.
0:12:29 > 0:12:34I'm a little concerned because the models are inexperienced handling dogs,
0:12:34 > 0:12:37things like how to hold a smaller dog so as not to hurt them,
0:12:37 > 0:12:42to look more natural, so the dogs will be more comfortable in their arms.
0:12:42 > 0:12:46Bigger dogs, how to walk them toward the edge of the runway
0:12:46 > 0:12:51rather than down the centre of the runway so the dogs do not crash into one another.
0:12:52 > 0:12:55Don't let her have a lot of leash, OK?
0:12:55 > 0:12:57- Don't let her get in front of you.- OK.
0:12:57 > 0:13:01John and pet agent Nancy are teaching everyone
0:13:01 > 0:13:03to work with a different type of heel.
0:13:03 > 0:13:09The dog should be on the outside. That'll make it a little easier. Use this to control her.
0:13:09 > 0:13:14It's just like that. It's just like little short... It's not a tug-of-war.
0:13:19 > 0:13:23It's Ernie's turn to try the walk without John.
0:13:23 > 0:13:25POP MUSIC PLAYS
0:13:29 > 0:13:32We were a little bit concerned about Ernie in the fashion show,
0:13:32 > 0:13:36because he is so exuberant and he thinks for himself.
0:13:36 > 0:13:39Being a herding dog he does think for himself.
0:13:39 > 0:13:42'I guess the biggest challenge for Ernie on the runway,
0:13:42 > 0:13:47'he might be tempted to herd all the models into his side of the runway.'
0:13:47 > 0:13:49On the other side.
0:13:49 > 0:13:53'That's what they do. They're herding dogs and they like to get everything nice and neat in a pile.'
0:13:53 > 0:13:55- Go.- Go!
0:13:55 > 0:14:00We think that he'll be just fine, but we have to wait and see.
0:14:00 > 0:14:04Later, it's this herder's first ever live runway show.
0:14:04 > 0:14:07Will Ernie make a fabulous debut as a catwalk model,
0:14:07 > 0:14:10or should he stick to sheep-herding?
0:14:13 > 0:14:16Mum's the word for our next animal at work,
0:14:16 > 0:14:18because she is a surrogate sheep.

0:14:21 > 0:14:23SHEEP: Baaaaa!
0:14:23 > 0:14:26Well, it's true. Keep watching, because we've travelled to Africa
0:14:26 > 0:14:28to take a look at this woolly worker.
0:14:30 > 0:14:34And now to meet an unusual family in South Africa.

0:15:15 > 0:15:17is mother to Zetta the Zebra.
0:15:34 > 0:15:37Parenting comes naturally to sheep, and isn't new to Heidi.
0:15:46 > 0:15:50That's good news for Zetta. She has one accepting mom.
0:15:57 > 0:16:01Heidi adopted Zetta when the zebra was just three months old.
0:16:01 > 0:16:05Zetta had been abandoned by her real mum
0:16:05 > 0:16:07and the rest of the herd at the wildlife centre.
0:16:07 > 0:16:09Zebras are sociable animals,
0:16:09 > 0:16:12so Zetta would have struggled to survive on her own.
0:16:12 > 0:16:14Zetta needed to have company,
0:16:14 > 0:16:17so Heidi was brought in to keep her calm.
0:16:17 > 0:16:19YAWNING
