0:00:02 > 0:00:06This is Animals At Work, the show that brings you...animals at work.
0:00:06 > 0:00:10Around the world there are millions of animals that have jobs.
0:00:10 > 0:00:14When we say we've got animals at work...we're not kidding!
0:00:14 > 0:00:18This is the show that brings you the most extraordinary, bizarre
0:00:18 > 0:00:21and unusual animals at work.
0:00:21 > 0:00:23Coming up...
0:00:23 > 0:00:25Will these sister sea lions
0:00:25 > 0:00:29successfully debut a spectacular new stunt?
0:00:29 > 0:00:34A four-legged Dobernanny carefully cares for her cheetah charges.
0:00:34 > 0:00:38Bob and his cattle crowd get up to some funky recycling.
0:00:55 > 0:00:57I'm ready, let's go for a take.
0:00:57 > 0:01:01OK, John Barrowman, Animals At Work take one, and...action.
0:01:01 > 0:01:05Hi, and welcome to the show! Today, we're up in Scotland,
0:01:05 > 0:01:08having a ball with some sensational sea lions!
0:01:08 > 0:01:09And cut! Thank you, John.
0:01:09 > 0:01:13That was pretty good - I don't think anyone will notice, do you?
0:01:16 > 0:01:19First, we're off to Blair Drummond in Scotland.
0:01:32 > 0:01:35Welcome to Blair Drummond Safari -
0:01:35 > 0:01:39island home to some highly unusual land creatures...
0:01:39 > 0:01:43and also a watery home to some slippery sea creatures.
0:01:43 > 0:01:47Meet four-year-old sea lions Poppy and Lola!
0:01:50 > 0:01:54These stunning swimmers are sisters who live and work together,
0:01:54 > 0:01:56educating visitors about sea lion life.
0:01:56 > 0:01:59Every day is a school day in this pool.
0:01:59 > 0:02:01Good morning, my little angels!
0:02:01 > 0:02:02How are we today?
0:02:08 > 0:02:12Their job is to change the public's attitude towards wildlife
0:02:12 > 0:02:14and the environment.
0:02:16 > 0:02:19Hey, Lola, can we have a nice handstand?
0:02:19 > 0:02:21Beautiful, good girl!
0:02:21 > 0:02:23Good!
0:02:30 > 0:02:33Fran has been training these public educators
0:02:33 > 0:02:37for three and a half years. It was puppy love at first sight!
0:02:38 > 0:02:41I love them probably too much,
0:02:41 > 0:02:46and possibly as much as a mother would love her child!
0:02:46 > 0:02:50Fran has worked with the sea lions to make an action-packed live show.
0:02:50 > 0:02:53They use their natural skills and fancy trick routines.
0:02:53 > 0:02:58This duo dive, swim, catch, bark
0:02:58 > 0:03:00and balance for their fans!
0:03:00 > 0:03:03This way, the crowd learn what sea lions do in their natural habitat.
0:03:05 > 0:03:08Lola's very much of a show-off.
0:03:09 > 0:03:13She's a little diva, our Lola.
0:03:13 > 0:03:15She likes to look at herself in the mirror as well.
0:03:15 > 0:03:20Poppy's definitely the more hyperactive of the two.
0:03:20 > 0:03:23She quite likes to do her own thing.
0:03:27 > 0:03:32Audiences can watch these hyper lions swim as fast as 40kph!
0:03:32 > 0:03:35That's almost the speed limit in most cities.
0:03:35 > 0:03:41And the underwater performers can dive as deep as 180m.
0:03:41 > 0:03:45That's more than three times the length of an Olympic-sized
0:03:45 > 0:03:47swimming pool. Once underwater,
0:03:47 > 0:03:50the girls can hide from their fans for a whole 40 minutes
0:03:50 > 0:03:54without taking a breath. That's longer than this whole show!
0:03:54 > 0:03:58Poppy and Lola's job is to win over the audience with their routines
0:03:58 > 0:04:01so the crowds will learn all about sea lions.
0:04:03 > 0:04:06If that's not enough responsibility, the lions
0:04:06 > 0:04:10are learning a whole new set of marine manoeuvres.
0:04:10 > 0:04:12Performing Poppy is great with her whiskers,
0:04:12 > 0:04:17so she'll be fishing for compliments with a new ball-balancing combo.
0:04:17 > 0:04:21She uses her whiskers as feelers to help hold the ball in position.
0:04:21 > 0:04:25When it starts to fall, she will wiggle her head to keep it balanced.
0:04:25 > 0:04:30So to make things even more exciting for Poppy,
0:04:30 > 0:04:33Fran is hoping she will be able to catch the ball,
0:04:33 > 0:04:35balance the ball,
0:04:35 > 0:04:39swim to the side and climb onto her stand,
0:04:39 > 0:04:42all without losing her whisker grip on the ball!
0:04:42 > 0:04:45And lovely Lola is a top diver,
0:04:45 > 0:04:47so she will be making a splash from the tower.
0:04:47 > 0:04:50Lola will have to climb the ramp,
0:04:50 > 0:04:52dive into the water,
0:04:52 > 0:04:53swim straight up,
0:04:53 > 0:04:57and hit the ball at a very precise point.
0:04:57 > 0:05:00What does Lola think about this precision jump?
0:05:00 > 0:05:01Arf! Arf!
0:05:01 > 0:05:04Hopes are high for both super swimmers.
0:05:04 > 0:05:06Learning something new can take time,
0:05:06 > 0:05:09but the crowds are coming tomorrow!
0:05:14 > 0:05:17I would like to say that Poppy and Lola were born ready.
0:05:20 > 0:05:24But...until we get on stage,
0:05:24 > 0:05:26until we try it,
0:05:26 > 0:05:29we don't know exactly how it's going to work out.
0:05:29 > 0:05:31It's going to be entirely up to them.
0:05:31 > 0:05:33Good girl!
0:05:33 > 0:05:36This sister act better start practising right away.
0:05:37 > 0:05:40Will the performing pair learn their new routines
0:05:40 > 0:05:44before the big show? Or will they just end up all wet?
0:05:50 > 0:05:53Now we're crossing our way to Cambridge, Ontario.
0:06:00 > 0:06:05African Lion Safari is chock full of strange, unique, and wild animals.
0:06:05 > 0:06:07And the strangest of these is...
0:06:07 > 0:06:09a Doberman!
0:06:10 > 0:06:14Mercedes the Doberman has an amazing job for a dog.
0:06:14 > 0:06:17She's a patient nanny to some baby cheetahs!
0:06:18 > 0:06:22Her most important role is helping
0:06:22 > 0:06:25take care of the cheetah cubs
0:06:25 > 0:06:27who have been born here.
0:06:27 > 0:06:32We've had ten cubs born in the last two years.
0:06:32 > 0:06:35And Mercedes helped raise all of them.
0:06:38 > 0:06:42Not so long ago, these big cats cuddled up with Mercedes.
0:06:42 > 0:06:45Even though they are all grown up and independent now,
0:06:45 > 0:06:48these cheetahs still respect and love their nanny.
0:06:48 > 0:06:50It isn't easy to raise cheetahs.
0:06:50 > 0:06:53They are fast but they're also fragile.
0:06:53 > 0:06:55They can't get stressed or sick,
0:06:55 > 0:06:59and they need a lot of care to grow up big and strong.
0:07:01 > 0:07:04Baby cheetahs need a supernanny to survive.
0:07:04 > 0:07:07And lucky for these kittens, Mercedes is well qualified
0:07:07 > 0:07:09for the job. Like all Dobermans,
0:07:09 > 0:07:12she is both tough and sweet.
0:07:12 > 0:07:17Cheetah parents don't always have the skills to look after their kids,
0:07:17 > 0:07:20so they call in super Dobernanny!
0:07:23 > 0:07:25Her duties include...
0:07:32 > 0:07:36These cuddly kittens will grow into big cats with sharp claws
0:07:36 > 0:07:40and teeth, so Mercedes needs to teach them how to be respectful.
0:07:43 > 0:07:47This nanny needs to make sure these babies don't bite.
0:07:48 > 0:07:53Always patient, Mercedes teaches the kittens that playing is OK,
0:07:53 > 0:07:55but aggression is not.
0:07:55 > 0:07:59If they get too rough with their nanny, she gently moves them
0:07:59 > 0:08:00to the ground with her mouth.
0:08:00 > 0:08:04She teaches them to be better behaved, relaxed cats.
0:08:04 > 0:08:08Once the cheetah youngsters are old enough and strong enough
0:08:08 > 0:08:11to leave their nanny, there is one more test of their confidence
0:08:11 > 0:08:14before they can join the grown-up cat pack.
0:08:17 > 0:08:20Today is test day for today's soon-to-be graduates.
0:08:20 > 0:08:25This cheetah is about to take a walk with Carole outside the safari
0:08:25 > 0:08:27grounds for the first time ever.
0:08:27 > 0:08:29The cat must remain chilled at all times.
0:08:29 > 0:08:34Mercedes will keep the cat calm so it can enjoy the adventure.
0:08:38 > 0:08:42Not a bit nervous, nanny stays nearby, helping her cheetah
0:08:42 > 0:08:45take some really big strides. That's a job well done!
0:08:45 > 0:08:47And Carole couldn't be prouder of her pup.
0:08:47 > 0:08:50I think that my wonderful dog partner, here,
0:08:50 > 0:08:53has helped to make them healthy and strong,
0:08:53 > 0:08:57and helped them to reach their full potential as cats.
0:08:58 > 0:09:01Wonderful work, Dobernanny!
0:09:06 > 0:09:10We've been surfing the net to find out what animals get up to
0:09:10 > 0:09:14after hours! Check out this kitten from Wisconsin,
0:09:14 > 0:09:16as she battles an electric enemy.
0:09:21 > 0:09:24Ooh, yeah! Come back here!
0:09:28 > 0:09:30I'm gonna show that mouse who's boss!
0:09:30 > 0:09:32Oh, well, maybe tomorrow.
0:09:37 > 0:09:41And back to the waters of Blair Drummond in Scotland.
0:09:47 > 0:09:50Poppy and Lola are super sea lions who educate their fans
0:09:50 > 0:09:52with an action-packed marine show.
0:09:56 > 0:09:58Training has begun, and these slippery sisters
0:09:58 > 0:10:02need to master a new routine before today's sold-out performance.
0:10:02 > 0:10:04There's not much time left,
0:10:04 > 0:10:08and this diving duo has a lot of work ahead of them!
0:10:08 > 0:10:12Problem is, sometimes, they don't quite do what they're told!
0:10:12 > 0:10:14And trainer Fran will only ask once.
0:10:14 > 0:10:19It's entirely their choice, whether they want to do what I ask of them.
0:10:19 > 0:10:21If they don't want to do it, they won't do it.
0:10:21 > 0:10:23So that's the worst fear -
0:10:23 > 0:10:27you bring them onto the stage and they don't want to do anything.
0:10:27 > 0:10:29Lola's lesson is first,
0:10:29 > 0:10:33and there's one sure way of bribing this lion to learn - fish food!
0:10:35 > 0:10:38A fat mackerel is Lola's fishy reward of choice.
0:10:38 > 0:10:42Let's hope there's a successful jump on the menu.
0:10:42 > 0:10:47Lola is going to combine that very high tower dive
0:10:47 > 0:10:50with a very high ball jump.
0:10:50 > 0:10:52MUSIC: "Eye Of The Tiger" by Survivor
0:10:53 > 0:10:56Lola must wiggle up the ramp, dive into the water,
0:10:56 > 0:10:59and quickly swim up to hit the ball in the precise point.
0:11:05 > 0:11:07Ooh, not quite.
0:11:08 > 0:11:10Second time lucky, maybe.
0:11:12 > 0:11:17Just like in the wild, Lola uses her fins to gain maximum speed and aim.
0:11:22 > 0:11:25Let's hope Lola's hungry for success and not just for fish.
0:11:29 > 0:11:34So close! Lola doesn't quite hit the right spot on the ball.
0:11:34 > 0:11:37Oh, bless your little socks, honey.
0:11:37 > 0:11:39Can she have a nice big round of applause?
0:11:39 > 0:11:42Very good attempt, but you missed.
0:11:42 > 0:11:45Oh well, it was close!
0:11:45 > 0:11:49Lola will need to stick her neck out a little more to pull this off.
0:11:49 > 0:11:52Let's hope she thinks her audience is worth the effort.
0:11:52 > 0:11:55Next up, the unpredictable Poppy.
0:11:55 > 0:11:58- Hello, Poppy. - Her power is in her whiskers.
0:11:58 > 0:12:02These wiggly wavers can detect a fish five metres away.
0:12:02 > 0:12:06Today, she needs them for a tricky ball balance, not for hunting.
0:12:06 > 0:12:09Now, what little Poppy's going to have to try and do
0:12:09 > 0:12:11in front of an audience,
0:12:11 > 0:12:17she's going to try and retrieve this basketball from the pool
0:12:17 > 0:12:21all the way back to the stand. It's a lot of work.
0:12:21 > 0:12:25This delicate combination move requires concentration and practice.
0:12:26 > 0:12:29It's touch and go whether Poppy will deliver.
0:12:29 > 0:12:31Good girl!
0:12:31 > 0:12:33Good girl!
0:12:36 > 0:12:39Oops! Poppy, get back in there! Show us you can do it!
0:12:39 > 0:12:41- Will she?- One more.
0:12:41 > 0:12:46'It would be a very big achievement if Poppy managed to learn
0:12:46 > 0:12:48'how to combine the two.'
0:12:48 > 0:12:51- Good girl!- Yes! She's stuck to her whiskers!
0:12:51 > 0:12:53Practice is over for today
0:12:53 > 0:12:56but it's still far from smooth swimming with these two.
0:12:57 > 0:13:00Hundreds of schoolchildren are arriving soon
0:13:00 > 0:13:03for the sea lion spectacular. Will these two make a big splash,
0:13:03 > 0:13:05or are they just in too deep?
0:13:08 > 0:13:11Hi, yeah, John Barrowman on the phone. Yeah.
0:13:11 > 0:13:15From the drama, yes. And the musical, yes. And the book, yes.
0:13:15 > 0:13:18And the album, oh yeah. Two of 'em. Yeah.
0:13:18 > 0:13:22Listen, I'm calling about the lawnmower that I ordered.
0:13:22 > 0:13:25It's not exactly how you described it in the catalogue.
0:13:25 > 0:13:29You said this is a lawnmower for movers and shakers,
0:13:29 > 0:13:31and to tell you the truth,
0:13:31 > 0:13:35I'm quite a good mover, and boy can I shake.
0:13:35 > 0:13:37Yeah.
0:13:37 > 0:13:39Um... Uh-huh.
0:13:39 > 0:13:41Yes, the colour's fine.
0:13:41 > 0:13:44And yes, it does fit in a shed, but...
0:13:44 > 0:13:46Moo!
0:13:46 > 0:13:50Oh, I see. Oh, well, bull-y for me!
0:13:54 > 0:13:56And now to Kenya in Africa.
0:14:10 > 0:14:14The Ol Pejeta Conservation Park is full of amazing wildlife
0:14:14 > 0:14:16and they all have one thing in common.
0:14:21 > 0:14:24Yes, yes, they do have something in common.
0:14:24 > 0:14:26They all need to eat - a lot.
0:14:28 > 0:14:30But with so many diners at the restaurant,
0:14:30 > 0:14:33sometimes the special of the day runs out.
0:14:34 > 0:14:37But fear not, hungry animals!
0:14:37 > 0:14:39Step forward our unlikely hero...
0:14:42 > 0:14:45Bob the Boran!
0:14:45 > 0:14:50Yes, this wrinkly fellow is quite a hero.
0:14:50 > 0:14:54If it weren't for Bob, a lot of wildlife would go hungry.
0:14:56 > 0:15:00And how does this lumpy muncher save the animals of Africa?
0:15:00 > 0:15:03Well, by... This really is getting a bit ridiculous.
0:15:03 > 0:15:06By pooping.
0:15:06 > 0:15:10And by weeing. And by eating. And by walking?
0:15:10 > 0:15:12Oh, my!
0:15:12 > 0:15:16Bob is one of our special bulls.
0:15:16 > 0:15:20His job is to improve the pastures on this conservation.
0:15:20 > 0:15:24It seems that Bob and his posse are quite the recyclers.
0:15:25 > 0:15:28This huge herd running 6,000 deep
0:15:28 > 0:15:31is the biggest cattle gang in the world.
0:15:31 > 0:15:34They consume a lot.
0:15:34 > 0:15:37# Just eat it Just eat it, whoo! #
0:15:37 > 0:15:40One Boran bull can weigh as much as 850kg,
0:15:43 > 0:15:46and they can eat 46kg of food a day!
0:15:48 > 0:15:53And they drink as much as a bathtub full of water every day,
0:15:53 > 0:15:55if they can get it.
0:15:55 > 0:15:58But Boran cattle can also go a long time without water.
0:15:58 > 0:16:02They are great guys to have around if there's a drought.
0:16:04 > 0:16:06For eight hours every day,
0:16:06 > 0:16:09this is an office of four-legged eating machines.
0:16:09 > 0:16:11Even better, they will eat anything,
0:16:11 > 0:16:15even rotten grass that other animals wouldn't touch!
0:16:18 > 0:16:22Which means this lot is pretty easy to go out to dinner with.
0:16:22 > 0:16:25If you're not choosy about your company,
0:16:25 > 0:16:27they will eat whatever you don't want.
0:16:27 > 0:16:32And by eating the bad grass, Bob is making way for the good grass.
0:16:34 > 0:16:37But while they're dining, these bad dinner dates
0:16:37 > 0:16:40wander around, trampling the ground below them.
0:16:40 > 0:16:43This stamping actually helps new food grow.
0:16:43 > 0:16:47So, Bob eats and eats, drinks and drinks, walks and walks.
0:16:47 > 0:16:51And the next step is what makes Bob such an efficient recycler.
0:16:51 > 0:16:55He takes all the material he's consumed over the day
0:16:55 > 0:16:57and he turns it into fertilizer!
0:17:05 > 0:17:07Bob the recycling machine.
0:17:07 > 0:17:10Step one - find food. Anything will do.
0:17:10 > 0:17:13Step 2 - eat. Step 3 - drink.
0:17:13 > 0:17:16Step 4 - digest, step 5 - fertilize,
0:17:16 > 0:17:19step 6 - walk. Step 7 - repeat.
0:17:22 > 0:17:25So, Bob is a hero because he prepares tasty land food
0:17:25 > 0:17:28for other animals all day long.
0:17:28 > 0:17:29He eats food that no-one else wants
0:17:29 > 0:17:33and uses that to help make food that everyone will eat.
0:17:35 > 0:17:40And then other animals come to eat Bob's recycled food.
0:17:40 > 0:17:41This is great for Bob's bosses,
0:17:41 > 0:17:45because the African wildlife brings tourists which bring lots of money,
0:17:45 > 0:17:48which means more cattle, which means more eating,
0:17:48 > 0:17:51which means more fertilizing, which means more food,
0:17:51 > 0:17:53which means more recycling, which means more...whoo!
0:17:53 > 0:17:56But instead of rewarding Boran Bob for all his hard work,
0:17:56 > 0:17:59the big wildlife he feeds still think he might be
0:17:59 > 0:18:02a delicious night-time snack himself.
0:18:02 > 0:18:07So Bob's boss has built Bob's gang a bovine pen.
0:18:08 > 0:18:11So they can sleep at night, so they can work all day,
0:18:11 > 0:18:14- so they can...- Ptthhrrrt.- Bob!
