0:00:10 > 0:00:13When we say we've got animals at work, we're not kidding!

0:00:13 > 0:00:17This is the show that brings you the most extraordinary,

0:00:17 > 0:00:20bizarre and unusual animals at work.

0:00:20 > 0:00:21BRAYING

0:00:21 > 0:00:23Coming up...

0:00:24 > 0:00:27Pasha the lioness goes missing while working undercover in Kenya.

0:00:29 > 0:00:33We meet a very funny looking model.

0:00:35 > 0:00:39And blood donors, Caleb and Rudi save the life of this doggy damsel.

0:00:55 > 0:00:56Hi, and welcome to the show.

0:00:58 > 0:01:02You could say the next animal at work is doing a roaring trade.

0:01:02 > 0:01:03Roooaaar!

0:01:03 > 0:01:06GROWLS Yeah! It's lions.

0:01:06 > 0:01:09Join Animals At Work in Africa as we see some lions

0:01:09 > 0:01:12with a big job on their hands...paws.

0:01:12 > 0:01:15You know what I mean!

0:01:18 > 0:01:21First we're off to Nanyuki in Kenya.

0:01:30 > 0:01:33Sitting on the equator in the depths of Africa is a wildlife park

0:01:33 > 0:01:34called Ol Pejea.

0:01:36 > 0:01:40The park is absolutely massive!

0:01:45 > 0:01:48The conservation park is home to...

0:02:09 > 0:02:12And, um, finally the coolest cats in the park...

0:02:14 > 0:02:18It's a very difficult job to keep track of all these animals.

0:02:18 > 0:02:22The park is huge and the animals don't stay still to be counted.

0:02:24 > 0:02:26THEME TUNE TO "Indiana Jones" PLAYS

0:02:31 > 0:02:33Meet the ecology researcher, Stephen.

0:02:33 > 0:02:36He has the gigantic responsibility

0:02:36 > 0:02:41of keeping up-to-date information about a pride of lions

0:02:41 > 0:02:43who could be anywhere in the park on any given day.

0:02:48 > 0:02:52If Stephen can't find the lions to count them

0:02:52 > 0:02:56his records will have mistakes and these mistakes will cause problems

0:02:56 > 0:02:58for the lions in the park.

0:02:59 > 0:03:02Too many lions can mean not enough food to go around.

0:03:04 > 0:03:07And too few lions could lead to them all disappearing.

0:03:09 > 0:03:14Keeping an eye on this pride all on his own became impossible for Stephen

0:03:14 > 0:03:16but as it's so important to keep a check on them

0:03:16 > 0:03:19Stephen decided to hire an assistant who could help him.

0:03:21 > 0:03:25# You know that I could use somebody... #

0:03:25 > 0:03:29Stephen's assistant needed very specific qualifications.

0:03:32 > 0:03:34He needed someone who could...

0:03:47 > 0:03:50Stephen started looking for his new employee and found...

0:03:53 > 0:03:55Pasha, the lioness.

0:03:55 > 0:03:58STEPHEN:

0:04:04 > 0:04:06Yes, that's right.

0:04:06 > 0:04:09He's getting extra help from this lovely lioness.

0:04:09 > 0:04:10As she can...

0:04:10 > 0:04:13..in her pride of 14 lions.

0:04:17 > 0:04:20Pasha is the dominant female in the pride.

0:04:20 > 0:04:22And leads the hunt

0:04:22 > 0:04:24so that's two more boxes ticked.

0:04:24 > 0:04:27# She's so lovely She's so lovely

0:04:27 > 0:04:30# She's so lovely She's so lovely... #

0:04:30 > 0:04:33- Look at that magnificent coat!- Ohh!

0:04:33 > 0:04:36- Those big gorgeous eyes.- Ohh!

0:04:36 > 0:04:39And that authentically furry body.

0:04:39 > 0:04:42Pasha is one fit feline!

0:04:42 > 0:04:48With all these qualifications, Pasha is a lioness with the mostess.

0:04:51 > 0:04:54STEPHEN:

0:05:09 > 0:05:12Pasha is fitted with a special radio collar.

0:05:12 > 0:05:15It may not be the most fashionable accessory

0:05:15 > 0:05:17but this collar silently transmits signals to Stephen

0:05:17 > 0:05:21and allows him to easily find and monitor the pride of lions.

0:05:23 > 0:05:26THEME TO "Mission Impossible" PLAYS

0:05:32 > 0:05:36Sporting her special collar, Pasha is sent on her mission.

0:05:38 > 0:05:41Her assignment is to go undercover with other lions

0:05:41 > 0:05:44so that when Stephen wants to find the pride

0:05:44 > 0:05:48all he needs to do is find secret agent Pasha.

0:05:55 > 0:05:59But just a few weeks into her new job Pasha goes so far undercover

0:05:59 > 0:06:00she disappears!

0:06:02 > 0:06:05This is disastrous!

0:06:05 > 0:06:10With Pasha missing, Stephen won't be able to make sure the pride is OK.

0:06:10 > 0:06:12Will Stephen find his super spy?

0:06:12 > 0:06:14Find out later.

0:06:19 > 0:06:22But now we're heading to New York in the USA.

0:06:29 > 0:06:32Meet Blossom.

0:06:32 > 0:06:34Don't worry, Blossom hasn't shrunk in the wash.

0:06:34 > 0:06:36She's a Shar Pei.

0:06:36 > 0:06:40Look at this face, only a face a mother could love!

0:06:40 > 0:06:43She's got such character and that's why people love her.

0:06:44 > 0:06:47Shar Pei is a way of saying "sandpaper" in China.

0:06:47 > 0:06:50And these funny-looking dogs are called it

0:06:50 > 0:06:52because their skin is so rough to the touch.

0:06:53 > 0:06:57Blossom is unique in that she has maintained her puppy look

0:06:57 > 0:07:02as an adult. She's kept her wrinkles which is not common in a Shar Pei.

0:07:03 > 0:07:07Yes, having a coat like sandpaper isn't the only weird thing

0:07:07 > 0:07:09about Blossom's skin.

0:07:10 > 0:07:14Young Shar Pei's have lots and lots of it

0:07:14 > 0:07:16which they literally grow into

0:07:16 > 0:07:20so they get less and less wrinkly over time. But not so Blossom.

0:07:20 > 0:07:24She has a puppy look but she has the mind of an adult.

0:07:24 > 0:07:26And that's why Blossom is a model.

0:07:26 > 0:07:28# You're beautiful... #

0:07:28 > 0:07:30CAMERA CLICKS

0:07:30 > 0:07:34Now just before you crease up with laughter, ha ha!

0:07:34 > 0:07:38We have to tell you that Blossom is a very famous foxy lady.

0:07:38 > 0:07:42And has appeared in adverts, newspapers, birthday cards

0:07:42 > 0:07:46- and calendars.- Ooh!

0:07:46 > 0:07:50In fact, Blossom is in lots and lots of adverts

0:07:50 > 0:07:55for any product that will get rid of wrinkles.

0:07:55 > 0:07:58But there's a lot of competition in the doggy modelling world, and lately

0:07:58 > 0:08:01Blossom just hasn't been getting the gigs.

0:08:01 > 0:08:05We need to have her face out there. We need to promote her a bit more.

0:08:05 > 0:08:07We have the next Lassie with wrinkles here,

0:08:07 > 0:08:09if anybody's out there watching!

0:08:09 > 0:08:13So there was only one thing for it, if the jobs aren't coming to Blossom

0:08:13 > 0:08:15then Blossom will have to go to the jobs.

0:08:15 > 0:08:19And where better to start than the capital of glitz and glamour,

0:08:19 > 0:08:21New York City!

0:08:21 > 0:08:25We're going to the Big Apple, right, Blos? Huh?

0:08:25 > 0:08:28You know what they say - if you can make it here

0:08:28 > 0:08:30you can make it anywhere.

0:08:32 > 0:08:34New York City - where Blossom has an audition

0:08:34 > 0:08:38for a very lucrative calendar modelling contract.

0:08:38 > 0:08:40This way.

0:08:43 > 0:08:45A place in a calendar is at stake.

0:08:45 > 0:08:48There are two tough judges,

0:08:48 > 0:08:51and even tougher competition.

0:08:51 > 0:08:56Nicole, could you bring Grub over, please?

0:08:56 > 0:08:59What we do for these calendars is not easy.

0:08:59 > 0:09:02People think they can just bring their dog in

0:09:02 > 0:09:05and snap the picture and that's it.

0:09:06 > 0:09:08Good.

0:09:09 > 0:09:13Yes, Blossom will have to get past this doggy model elite

0:09:13 > 0:09:14if she wants to be a calendar girl.

0:09:14 > 0:09:16Marilyn, bring in Blossom.

0:09:19 > 0:09:22It's been quite a while since Blossom has had a job.

0:09:24 > 0:09:27What will the judges think of her?

0:09:27 > 0:09:29Can you show us what Blossom can do?

0:09:29 > 0:09:32- But being beautiful isn't the only talent Blossom has.- Stay.

0:09:32 > 0:09:35- She has another trick up her sleeve. - That's very cute.

0:09:35 > 0:09:38This doggy is a dab paw at the foxtrot.

0:09:38 > 0:09:42What we found was when we turned on music she really enjoyed music.

0:09:42 > 0:09:46So we started doing obedience to music which is known as freestyle.

0:09:46 > 0:09:50MUSIC PLAYS

0:09:50 > 0:09:53So was our crumpled pooch winning over the judges?

0:09:53 > 0:09:59The Shar Pei's were very much in style about six or eight years ago.

0:09:59 > 0:10:02And you didn't see them for a long time.

0:10:02 > 0:10:06So I think maybe it's time for a Shar Pei comeback

0:10:06 > 0:10:09and I think Blossom has what it takes.

0:10:10 > 0:10:13Blossom was wonderful. She was very, very talented.

0:10:13 > 0:10:14She's very good.

0:10:14 > 0:10:17Blossom's whole career hangs in the balance.

0:10:17 > 0:10:20It's all down to the judges' decision.

0:10:20 > 0:10:23Marilyn, I'd like very much for Blossom to be in the next calendar.

0:10:23 > 0:10:25Oh, that's wonderful!

0:10:25 > 0:10:27- We'd like her to be Miss April. - Oh! Great!

0:10:27 > 0:10:30Aah! Blossom, you're back in business!

0:10:36 > 0:10:39We've been surfing the net to find out what animals get up to

0:10:39 > 0:10:41on their days off.

0:10:41 > 0:10:45And it looks like these pets have been working too hard.

0:10:45 > 0:10:48# ..Still cooling, I'm still yawning

0:10:48 > 0:10:50# Yeah, I'll wake up hair and make-up

0:10:50 > 0:10:52# Waiting for you Don't be stalling

0:10:52 > 0:10:56# This performance is important I don't think I can put my all in

0:10:56 > 0:10:59# Camera crews don't get no love from me, just let me be

0:10:59 > 0:11:01# Oh, my gosh... #

0:11:01 > 0:11:02Anyone for a cat nap?

0:11:09 > 0:11:12And it's back to Ol Pejea Wildlife Park in Kenya.

0:11:13 > 0:11:16Three weeks ago Pasha the lioness got a job

0:11:16 > 0:11:20as Stephen's undercover research assistant.

0:11:20 > 0:11:22She was acting as a spy so that Stephen could

0:11:22 > 0:11:24keep an eye on her pride.

0:11:24 > 0:11:26But Pasha has gone missing.

0:11:27 > 0:11:31But as the weeks flew by, all of Stephen's attempts to contact

0:11:31 > 0:11:33his special agent have failed.

0:11:33 > 0:11:35Stephen is worried that Pasha

0:11:35 > 0:11:37may have separated from her pride.

0:11:37 > 0:11:41This would make collecting information about Pasha's gang

0:11:41 > 0:11:43a mission even more impossible than usual.

0:11:45 > 0:11:48BEEPING

0:11:48 > 0:11:51Stephen is desperately seeking Pasha. If he doesn't find her

0:11:51 > 0:11:54before nightfall tonight, his critical research on the pride

0:11:54 > 0:11:56will become dangerously out of date.

0:11:56 > 0:11:59And since lions are most active at night,

0:11:59 > 0:12:03every evening that goes by takes the pride further and further away

0:12:03 > 0:12:06from where Stephen last found them.

0:12:07 > 0:12:09Trying to locate a lion in this huge park

0:12:09 > 0:12:12is like looking for a needle in a haystack

0:12:12 > 0:12:13and the transmitter only works

0:12:13 > 0:12:16within a range of five kilometres away from Pasha.

0:12:21 > 0:12:25Finally, there's something in the distance. Could it be Pasha?

0:12:25 > 0:12:27No. That's some other cool cats.

0:12:27 > 0:12:29Three male cheetahs.

0:12:29 > 0:12:32Cheetahs can't be collared like lions

0:12:32 > 0:12:35so the only way of tracking them and collecting data

0:12:35 > 0:12:37is to actually find them on the reserve.

0:12:37 > 0:12:41There is no way to be a cheater when tracking cheetahs.

0:12:45 > 0:12:47Ooh, there's something else.

0:12:47 > 0:12:50No. That's an ostrich.

0:12:50 > 0:12:52Looks nothing like a lion, Stephen.

0:12:55 > 0:12:58And these guys are far too big to be lions!

0:13:01 > 0:13:03Where is that pesky pride?

0:13:03 > 0:13:05Even on top of his car

0:13:05 > 0:13:09Stephen still isn't seeing eye to eye with these giraffes.

0:13:09 > 0:13:13His neck's a little to be a lion, eh, Stephen?

0:13:13 > 0:13:17All these other animals help Stephen with his research in their own way.

0:13:17 > 0:13:19By knowing how many animals are in the park

0:13:19 > 0:13:22he can make sure that all of them are happy

0:13:22 > 0:13:25and there is plenty of food for all.

0:13:26 > 0:13:30Oh, Stephen! Pasha couldn't go undercover with those rhinos.

0:13:30 > 0:13:32She's not there, either.

0:13:32 > 0:13:34BEEPING

0:13:34 > 0:13:36Wait, wait, wait!

0:13:36 > 0:13:38Who's that cat over there?

0:13:41 > 0:13:44This big girl is Pasha's daughter, Poppy.

0:13:48 > 0:13:52Female lions can weigh between 120 and 185 kilograms.

0:13:52 > 0:13:56About as much as 2,500 chocolate bars!

0:13:59 > 0:14:02With a cat as big as Poppy around,

0:14:02 > 0:14:04Stephen is wisely staying in the car.

0:14:06 > 0:14:09Stephen hopes this means Pasha and the pride are near.

0:14:09 > 0:14:11But still no signal.

0:14:11 > 0:14:13Stephen drives on.

0:14:15 > 0:14:18That's no lion! That ugly mug is a warthog.

0:14:18 > 0:14:21But he looks like he might be running away from something.

0:14:21 > 0:14:25Maybe he's trying NOT to be a tasty treat for Pasha's pride.

0:14:27 > 0:14:31The sun will soon set and Stephen still hasn't located Pasha

0:14:31 > 0:14:33and the other lions from the pride.

0:14:33 > 0:14:35It's like this crafty cat has just vanished!

0:14:38 > 0:14:41BEEPING, SIGNAL SOUNDS Wait! What's that?

0:14:41 > 0:14:44Just when he was about to head for home.

0:14:46 > 0:14:49Stephen picks up a faint beep on the tracking device.

0:14:55 > 0:14:57Oh, this is great news!

0:14:57 > 0:15:01Pasha, the research assistant is no more than five kilometres away.

0:15:01 > 0:15:04Stephen has found Pasha's spy signal

0:15:04 > 0:15:07but will he be able to locate her before night falls?

0:15:10 > 0:15:13You know, some jobs really do bleed you dry.

0:15:13 > 0:15:16A little like this one. Hey, buddy. Don't you think?

0:15:16 > 0:15:18DOG WHINES No, no. Don't take offence!

0:15:18 > 0:15:22Because I am talking about a couple of doggy donors

0:15:22 > 0:15:25who are true bloodhounds. That's right.

0:15:25 > 0:15:28Join Animals At Work as we see some caring canines

0:15:28 > 0:15:31for who, saving lives is all in a day's work.

0:15:33 > 0:15:35And now to Coalville in England.

0:15:43 > 0:15:46MUSIC: "Holding Out For A Hero" by Bonnie Tyler

0:15:48 > 0:15:50Meet some super skinny superheroes.

0:15:50 > 0:15:54These canine crusaders save other doggy lives by giving blood.

0:15:56 > 0:15:58# I need a hero...! #

0:15:58 > 0:16:01Caleb's really lively and he's a happy dog.

0:16:01 > 0:16:04He wants to be friends with everybody.

0:16:04 > 0:16:06This one's Rudi. He's a gent.

0:16:06 > 0:16:10He's very laid back and very chilled out.

0:16:10 > 0:16:13He'd much prefer to do this than anything else.

0:16:17 > 0:16:21This dynamic duo have donated lots of blood over the years,

0:16:21 > 0:16:24including a pouch of blood to this pooch.

0:16:24 > 0:16:26Meet Melody.

0:16:26 > 0:16:29Six months ago she needed some rescuing.

0:16:29 > 0:16:31She went to bed

0:16:31 > 0:16:32not feeling very well.

0:16:32 > 0:16:34So we said

0:16:34 > 0:16:36we'll see how she is in the morning.

0:16:36 > 0:16:39We knew straight away, or within 24 hours

0:16:39 > 0:16:41that there was something seriously wrong with her.

0:16:43 > 0:16:46It was very clear when she stood up and just collapsed.

0:16:46 > 0:16:48I rang the vet and they said to bring her down.

0:16:48 > 0:16:51I had to carry her to the car which is unheard of.

0:16:51 > 0:16:56Usually as soon as you open the door she's the first one there.

0:16:56 > 0:17:00I had to carry her into the vets to which she said there's something

0:17:00 > 0:17:02definitely wrong with her.

0:17:05 > 0:17:08It wasn't looking good for lifeless Melody.

0:17:09 > 0:17:13At this point veterinary surgeons did not know what was wrong with her.

0:17:14 > 0:17:18Tests on her blood later revealed that she was desperately ill.

0:17:18 > 0:17:22The blood tests showed that she was very anaemic.

0:17:22 > 0:17:24Life-threateningly so.

0:17:24 > 0:17:29So it was decided that we had to perform a blood transfusion

0:17:29 > 0:17:32which was the only way of providing her with more red blood cells

0:17:32 > 0:17:34to work with.

0:17:34 > 0:17:36So she was really ill.

0:17:36 > 0:17:37I thought she was going to die.

0:17:37 > 0:17:42Enter super mutts, Caleb and Rudi to the rescue!

0:17:48 > 0:17:52These super healthy hounds give blood to local vets to save the lives

0:17:52 > 0:17:54of doggies in distress.

0:18:02 > 0:18:03Good!

0:18:03 > 0:18:05That was great!

0:18:05 > 0:18:09We take approximately 450mls.

0:18:09 > 0:18:11It's the same amount as we would take from a person.

0:18:11 > 0:18:14Greyhounds do make very good donors.

0:18:14 > 0:18:17The type of their blood is generally one which is useful.

0:18:17 > 0:18:21Five minutes later, Caleb's life-saving work is done.

0:18:25 > 0:18:27Oh, I know!
