0:00:02 > 0:00:06This is Animals At Work, the show that brings you... animals at work.
0:00:06 > 0:00:10Around the world, millions of animals that have jobs.
0:00:10 > 0:00:13When we say we've got animals at work, we're not kidding!
0:00:13 > 0:00:19This is the show that brings you the most extraordinary, bizarre and unusual,
0:00:19 > 0:00:21Animals at Work.
0:00:21 > 0:00:22Coming up.
0:00:22 > 0:00:28Tour leader Jabulani takes on a trunk-load of trouble with a naughty student.
0:00:28 > 0:00:31SNEEZES
0:00:31 > 0:00:35Will Snatch the wayward show bird straighten up and fly right?
0:00:35 > 0:00:38She will push her luck every now and again to test me.
0:00:38 > 0:00:41It's very juvenile behaviour.
0:00:41 > 0:00:46Banjo the Busker tries to serenade his way to sunny Florida.
0:00:46 > 0:00:48DOG WAILS
0:01:03 > 0:01:06Hey and welcome to Animals At Work.
0:01:06 > 0:01:09I'm John Barrowman and as an international star...
0:01:10 > 0:01:15..I travel the world and I've met interesting tour guides in my time,
0:01:15 > 0:01:19but none have carried as much weight as the one we'll meet next.
0:01:19 > 0:01:24He's one animal at work for who excess baggage is far from a difficult tusk.
0:01:24 > 0:01:25Tusk.
0:01:25 > 0:01:27Task. Ha ha ha ha ha!
0:01:27 > 0:01:31Anyway, pack your trunk as we take a walk on the wide side
0:01:31 > 0:01:35with a big man who likes to blow his own tour guide trumpet.
0:01:35 > 0:01:38BLOWS HIS IMAGINARY TRUNK
0:01:43 > 0:01:46First, we're off to Hoedspruit, South Africa.
0:01:55 > 0:01:59The Kapama Game Reserve is stuffed with African wildlife!
0:01:59 > 0:02:01There's rhinos,
0:02:03 > 0:02:05giraffes,
0:02:05 > 0:02:07warthogs,
0:02:07 > 0:02:09buffalos,
0:02:09 > 0:02:11zebras,
0:02:11 > 0:02:13lions,
0:02:15 > 0:02:16baboons
0:02:16 > 0:02:20and one very important elephant!
0:02:20 > 0:02:25This big guy is so hugely famous that he has an entire camp named after him!
0:02:30 > 0:02:35This is Jabulani, tour guide extraordinaire!
0:02:35 > 0:02:41This gentle giant is a massive talent at leading tours though the animal-packed safari.
0:02:43 > 0:02:47But Jabulani wasn't always such a great leader.
0:02:47 > 0:02:52Once upon a time, he was just a little elephant who got stuck in the mud.
0:02:52 > 0:02:56When the four-month-old calf was found, he was in really rough shape.
0:02:58 > 0:03:03His rescuers brought him to Lente, the woman who saved his life.
0:03:10 > 0:03:13She slowly nursed him back to health.
0:03:13 > 0:03:18But after a year with Lente, Jabulani thought he was a human baby.
0:03:18 > 0:03:22He didn't know how to act like an elephant any more!
0:03:25 > 0:03:32Elephants are social animals and become sad if they don't have any ele-pals.
0:03:32 > 0:03:38So Lente went out and got Jabulani eleven other big buddies who needed homes and jobs.
0:03:40 > 0:03:43Jabulani's insta-family accepted him right away.
0:03:43 > 0:03:47This was the start of the Jabulani elephant camp.
0:03:51 > 0:03:56Usually in the wild, elephant families are led by the oldest female,
0:03:56 > 0:04:01and males older than fourteen years wouldn't travel with the herd.
0:04:06 > 0:04:12This camp family is pretty special because the males stick around and help raise the babies.
0:04:12 > 0:04:15They let Jabulani, a young male, lead them.
0:04:15 > 0:04:18How did this popular fellow find his name?
0:04:25 > 0:04:30Jabulani was such a hit with the other elephants that Lente wondered
0:04:30 > 0:04:35if visitors to the safari would find him charming also?
0:04:35 > 0:04:39Working with a team of trainers, Jabulani and his family learned to
0:04:39 > 0:04:44lead tours through the African safari around the Jabulani Camp.
0:04:45 > 0:04:49One of Jabulani's many duties is training beginner tour guides.
0:04:49 > 0:04:54Now, the famous Jabulani is up against one colossal new challenge.
0:04:54 > 0:04:58Meet Limpopo, a tour guide in training
0:04:58 > 0:05:01who is really testing her teacher's patience.
0:05:01 > 0:05:05This mischievous two-year-old female is proving
0:05:05 > 0:05:08more than a handful for her handlers and her teacher.
0:05:10 > 0:05:14There is a new tour group coming to the camp tomorrow
0:05:14 > 0:05:16and unpredictable Limpopo is a threat
0:05:16 > 0:05:20to Jabulani's polished and professional presentation.
0:05:26 > 0:05:30Will Jabulani get the naughty toddler under control or will
0:05:30 > 0:05:33she embarrass him in front of his guests?
0:05:33 > 0:05:36This herd has some serious practicing to do.
0:05:42 > 0:05:46And now we're wailing our way to Montreal, Canada.
0:05:54 > 0:05:56Brr! In chilly Montreal,
0:05:56 > 0:06:01under a hairless coat beats the tiny warm heart of a true rock n' roller.
0:06:01 > 0:06:03# I like the way you move... #
0:06:03 > 0:06:10Banjo and his band-mate Houston are Chinese Crested dogs and they are almost totally furless.
0:06:10 > 0:06:14Interestingly these dogs were bred by the Aztecs to warm beds.
0:06:14 > 0:06:16Banjo! Houston!
0:06:19 > 0:06:24But these two buskers are famous for warming up crowds instead.
0:06:24 > 0:06:28Banjo is the lead singer for the family busking band.
0:06:28 > 0:06:31His singing style and his paying packs of fans
0:06:31 > 0:06:34have made him the main breadwinner in the family.
0:06:37 > 0:06:41I wanted a singing dog because I do a show and I needed a highlight
0:06:41 > 0:06:47for the show, so I thought a singing dog would make a huge impact,
0:06:47 > 0:06:51and he does.
0:06:51 > 0:06:54Today Banjo, we have to make a lot of money.
0:06:54 > 0:06:58To keep his moneymaker in peak crooning condition,
0:06:58 > 0:07:03Banjo rehearses with manager Michel every day.
0:07:03 > 0:07:08One, two, three.
0:07:11 > 0:07:16BANJO SINGS
0:07:16 > 0:07:18Banjo gives it all he's got!
0:07:18 > 0:07:21He's really reaching for that high note!
0:07:21 > 0:07:23One, two, three.
0:07:23 > 0:07:28- That Banjo, he's really the king of rock n'dog!- The king of rock n'dog!
0:07:28 > 0:07:33The plan was for Houston to be Banjo's lead guitarist but so far
0:07:33 > 0:07:36he isn't showing the same stage presence or talent.
0:07:36 > 0:07:40Um, the strings are a little higher, Houston.
0:07:40 > 0:07:45Banjo and Houston, despite being seasoned performers,
0:07:45 > 0:07:48are actually quite a fragile breed of toy dog.
0:07:48 > 0:07:52Special care must be taken to stop them becoming sunburned or cold.
0:07:52 > 0:07:58This year, the band is taking a big extra step to keep their singing sensation toasty warm.
0:07:58 > 0:08:03The family band is hoping to hit the road for warmer weathers in Florida.
0:08:07 > 0:08:13So superstar busker Banjo needs to earn enough money to fly the family south.
0:08:17 > 0:08:20But first, as every rock star knows,
0:08:20 > 0:08:22presentation is everything.
0:08:22 > 0:08:26Banjo chooses his rock 'n' roll costume.
0:08:26 > 0:08:29The fans go wild for a dog with style.
0:08:29 > 0:08:34These clothes are for the show but also to keep the performers warm.
0:08:36 > 0:08:40The more money this pint-sized pup star raises today,
0:08:40 > 0:08:45the sooner the whole family band can escape to warmer weather.
0:08:45 > 0:08:47Michel collects a curious crowd.
0:08:47 > 0:08:50Soon it will be show time for Banjo!
0:08:50 > 0:08:54It's almost time for Banjo to bust out his crazy singing style.
0:08:54 > 0:09:00Will this crowd open their purses for the little busker?
0:09:00 > 0:09:07And now ladies and gentleman, I am proud, to introduce the one, the only Banjo!
0:09:08 > 0:09:10One, two.
0:09:16 > 0:09:18BANJO SINGS
0:09:25 > 0:09:31Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. One, two, one, two, three, four.
0:09:31 > 0:09:33Banjo!
0:09:33 > 0:09:35Banjo bow wows the crowd.
0:09:35 > 0:09:40The tiny crooner is a singing success!
0:09:42 > 0:09:45The family can take this show on the road to Florida,
0:09:45 > 0:09:51where it will be goodbye winter coats and hello bikinis for Banjo.
0:09:55 > 0:10:00We've been surfing the net to find out what animals get up to on the weekends.
0:10:00 > 0:10:05Check out these pets who work as part-time babysitters for extra spending money.
0:10:05 > 0:10:07# We are family
0:10:09 > 0:10:12# Get up everybody
0:10:13 > 0:10:15# We are family
0:10:17 > 0:10:19# I got all my sisters and me. #
0:10:19 > 0:10:24If they're paid for their patience, these pets would be millionaires!
0:10:29 > 0:10:32And it's back to Hoedspruit, South Africa.
0:10:33 > 0:10:39Jabulani is an eleven-year-old African elephant with a trunk-load of responsibilities.
0:10:39 > 0:10:45He is camp mascot, camp counsellor, tour leader and ele-trainer.
0:10:45 > 0:10:49Today, Jabulani is under even more pressure than usual.
0:10:49 > 0:10:53A large group of tourists is arriving for a special tour
0:10:53 > 0:10:58and he has a misbehaving toddler in training on his hands... or well... feet.
0:10:59 > 0:11:01SNEEZES
0:11:01 > 0:11:03COCKEREL CROWS
0:11:06 > 0:11:12Jabulani wakes his family up bright and early so they can begin preparing for the big day.
0:11:12 > 0:11:16First some morning exercises to warm up.
0:11:20 > 0:11:25This smart group can understand over eighty commands from their trainers.
0:11:25 > 0:11:29Right now Limpopo seems to only know the command for play.
0:11:33 > 0:11:37Limpopo, the exercises are happening over there!
0:11:41 > 0:11:46Next, Jabulani organizes a refresher course on the elephant commands.
0:11:47 > 0:11:51Hopefully this will inspire little Limpopo to shape up.
0:11:53 > 0:11:57This is all getting very embarrassing for tour guide Jabulani.
0:11:57 > 0:12:04The visitors are coming soon and this little troublemaker is not listening to his leader at all!
0:12:07 > 0:12:13Jabulani takes Limpopo away from the group for some one-on-one instruction.
0:12:26 > 0:12:29It seems to be going well until...
0:12:29 > 0:12:30Uh oh, dear!
0:12:30 > 0:12:34Again, Limpopo gets bored and holds a small uprising...
0:12:34 > 0:12:37well, trunk-rising.
0:12:37 > 0:12:42Baby Limpopo may never learn to follow in her family's guiding footsteps.
0:12:42 > 0:12:45She can't even sort her trunk out.
0:12:45 > 0:12:49Oh, Limpopo, whatever is Jabulani going to do with you?
0:13:01 > 0:13:04The tour is arriving in one hour.
0:13:04 > 0:13:07Jabulani usually runs a pretty tight ship,
0:13:07 > 0:13:13but this little rebel is threatening to make a laughing stock out of her big, big boss!
0:13:13 > 0:13:17Will Jabulani be able to keep little Limpopo in line?
0:13:21 > 0:13:26Next on Animals At Work, we're bringing the ancient art of falconry
0:13:26 > 0:13:30into the twenty-first century with some sophisticated robotics,
0:13:30 > 0:13:32so keep your eagle eyes right here.
0:13:32 > 0:13:36Hey you know, I'm a, I'm a big fan of robotics
0:13:36 > 0:13:40and not many people know this but I have my very own cyborg butler.
0:13:40 > 0:13:42Yeah. It's called Barrow-bot.
0:13:42 > 0:13:46Barrow-bot! Barrow-bot!
0:13:46 > 0:13:51Barrow-bot, where... where is he?
0:13:51 > 0:13:54He's never around when I need him. Hold on.
0:13:58 > 0:14:02I am Barrow-bot. I work for the Barrowman.
0:14:02 > 0:14:05I am a cyborg 3,000.
0:14:07 > 0:14:09Did you think that was me? Ha.
0:14:09 > 0:14:14Hey Barrow-Bot, go get me a soya latte half caf decaf low caf frappa lappa slappa cino.
0:14:14 > 0:14:16Quick!
0:14:21 > 0:14:24And now to Stirling, Scotland.
0:14:32 > 0:14:35Ah, beautiful Loch Lomond.
0:14:35 > 0:14:40World famous for its lush grounds, calm waters and... what's that?
0:14:40 > 0:14:44Up in the air? Is it a plane? It's a superhero?
0:14:44 > 0:14:46No wait it's...DUCKKKKKKKKK!
0:14:46 > 0:14:48Well, an eagle actually.
0:14:48 > 0:14:52That feathery flash is the fittingly named Snatch.
0:14:52 > 0:14:54Give her a big round of applause.
0:15:00 > 0:15:03A one-year-old white-tailed sea eagle.
0:15:03 > 0:15:09This high-flying female is the star show bird at the Blair Drummond Safari Park.
0:15:11 > 0:15:17She and her co-workers entertain and educate crowds about their birdy lifestyles.
0:15:20 > 0:15:23That Snatch, she swoops, she dives, she...well obviously...
0:15:23 > 0:15:25she snatches and she also...
0:15:25 > 0:15:28is a little grouchy in the morning.
0:15:28 > 0:15:30She doesn't like mornings, no.
0:15:30 > 0:15:34She's a grumpy girl to say the least, especially in the morning.
0:15:34 > 0:15:40Glen is actually quite brave to rouse this not-so-early bird when she'd rather be sleeping.
0:15:40 > 0:15:45White-tailed sea eagles like Snatch are strong, fierce birds of prey.
0:15:45 > 0:15:49Snatch's wingspan is two metres wide.
0:15:49 > 0:15:52That means she is longer across than Glen is tall.
0:15:54 > 0:15:59Snatch weighs about 5.5kg, that's more than a human head.
0:15:59 > 0:16:01Snatch's eagle eyes are so strong,
0:16:01 > 0:16:05she can see tiny animals on the ground from high in the air.
0:16:05 > 0:16:09She can see more than one kilometre away.
0:16:09 > 0:16:15She can also pick up and carry more than half her own weight in her powerful talons.
0:16:17 > 0:16:22Glen and Snatch have worked together since this bird was just an eaglet.
0:16:22 > 0:16:26But she was raised by a mother bird and not by a human.
0:16:28 > 0:16:31It took a lot of training for Snatch to trust Glen.
0:16:31 > 0:16:34She can still be quite unpredictable.
0:16:34 > 0:16:37She's quite happy of us working around her feet
0:16:37 > 0:16:42but when your hand sort of goes above her feet, her body posture changes.
0:16:42 > 0:16:47You know, the head comes up and she starts to look at you like that.
0:16:47 > 0:16:49She is a challenging bird.
0:17:00 > 0:17:05She still will push her luck every now and again, just to test me.
0:17:05 > 0:17:09You know, it's very juvenile behaviour in many respects, you know.
0:17:10 > 0:17:15Because this bird is always looking for a new challenge,
0:17:15 > 0:17:19Glen has found an inventive way to test her snatching skills.
0:17:19 > 0:17:24Enter engineering student and possible mad scientist Euan.
0:17:26 > 0:17:30Euan has invented a robot fish for Snatch to snatch!
0:17:30 > 0:17:36We've tried things static before, this is the first time we've tried a moving lure
0:17:36 > 0:17:39so we're quite excited and a bit nervous.
0:17:39 > 0:17:40- It's on.- It's on. OK.
0:17:40 > 0:17:46- Down position is off. You have to turn the remote control on so the signal's established.- OK.
0:17:49 > 0:17:52Yup, that's the high tech robot fish.
0:17:55 > 0:18:01Well, hopefully by the movement, which isn't happening. Oh dear.
0:18:01 > 0:18:04Hmmm, having a little trouble with the robot, boys?
0:18:04 > 0:18:07- Stick. We need a stick.- Big stick.
0:18:07 > 0:18:11Let's hope Snatch is better at retrieving the robo-fish.
0:18:11 > 0:18:14What do you think? Snatch will be convinced?
0:18:14 > 0:18:17Yeah. I think she'll go for it.
0:18:19 > 0:18:22With the slippery robot fish recovered,
0:18:22 > 0:18:24it's time for Snatch's showdown.
0:18:24 > 0:18:29There is an excited audience here today for the birds of prey show.
0:18:29 > 0:18:34Let's hope Snatch doesn't embarrass Euan and Glen in front of these people.
0:18:34 > 0:18:37She might decide not to go for the robot fish.
0:18:37 > 0:18:42The show is off to a soaring start.
0:18:42 > 0:18:45The other birds warm up the crowd.
0:18:56 > 0:19:00It's finally time for Snatch's big...snatch.
0:19:00 > 0:19:03This could be quite upsetting for Glen.
0:19:07 > 0:19:11Sassy Snatch isn't one to always do what she's asked.
0:19:11 > 0:19:14Here she goes! Here she goes!
0:19:15 > 0:19:18Yes. Superb. Give her a big round of applause.
0:19:18 > 0:19:21And she snatches it with the greatest of ease!
0:19:21 > 0:19:23What a show stealer.
0:19:23 > 0:19:27What does Glen think about his bird's battle with the robo-fish?
0:19:27 > 0:19:30Success! Absolutely fantastic.
0:19:30 > 0:19:32Fab-eagulous work today, Snatch!
0:19:36 > 0:19:41We've been surfing the net to see what your pets get up to on their days off.
0:19:41 > 0:19:45Take Charlie the cockatoo as he tries to chat up his bird.
0:19:46 > 0:19:47# Girls
0:19:47 > 0:19:50# And all I really want is girls
0:19:51 > 0:19:54# And in the morning, it's girls
0:19:54 > 0:19:57# Cos in the evening, it's girls
0:19:57 > 0:20:00# I like the way they walk... #
0:20:03 > 0:20:05And they live happily ever after.
0:20:10 > 0:20:12And now to San Diego, California.
0:20:22 > 0:20:26This super jumper is Hogan, a four-year-old Labrador
0:20:26 > 0:20:29who is training to be a dock dog champion.
0:20:29 > 0:20:36To compete in dock diving, Hogan must sprint down a pier and then leap out across the water.
0:20:36 > 0:20:40The bigger the distance, the better the chances he has of winning.
0:20:46 > 0:20:49His personal best is 6.5 metres.
0:20:53 > 0:20:56Wait. Go, go, go, go, go!
0:20:56 > 0:21:01The Great Dock Dogs competition is coming up and Mark is hoping Hogan
0:21:01 > 0:21:05will place in the top three and go on to the nationals.
0:21:07 > 0:21:10Hogan loves to jump, he loves to work.
0:21:10 > 0:21:14There's money but we do it because he loves it. That's why we jump.
0:21:17 > 0:21:22Hogan was adopted from a rescue organization to keep Friar company.
0:21:22 > 0:21:25But Hogan's self confidence was low.
0:21:25 > 0:21:30He was terribly nervous around other dogs, especially Friar.
0:21:30 > 0:21:35To help Hogan become brave and make friends, Mark taught him to dock dive.
0:21:35 > 0:21:39Six months later, sporty Hogan and Friar were the best of friends.
0:21:40 > 0:21:44Today's competition is a new challenge for Hogan.
0:21:44 > 0:21:46He has never tried an indoor jump before.
