0:00:02 > 0:00:05I'm John Barrowman. Welcome to Animals At Work, the show where... animals work.
0:00:05 > 0:00:09All over the planet there are millions of animals that have jobs.
0:00:09 > 0:00:10Whuuh!
0:00:10 > 0:00:15This is the show that brings you the funniest, coolest and most bizarre...
0:00:15 > 0:00:17animals at work.
0:00:17 > 0:00:20Here's what we got for ya.
0:00:20 > 0:00:22Blackjack the gelding needs to calm down
0:00:22 > 0:00:25if he's going to make the polo dream team.
0:00:29 > 0:00:32Charlie the cat is a secret superhero!
0:00:32 > 0:00:35He's very different to most normal cats.
0:00:35 > 0:00:37Go fetch!
0:00:37 > 0:00:40And the Fanimals struggle to teach an old dog a new trick.
0:00:40 > 0:00:41But now it's...
0:00:41 > 0:00:43Showtime!
0:00:58 > 0:01:02Hey, everybody, I'm so excited, because I'm about to get
0:01:02 > 0:01:05my first lesson in the royal sport of horse riding. Whoo-hoo!
0:01:05 > 0:01:07I've got my helmet, I've got my crop.
0:01:07 > 0:01:10Now all I need is a really big horse, and a strong one!
0:01:13 > 0:01:14This is ridiculous!
0:01:21 > 0:01:23First we're off to Oahu in Hawaii.
0:01:30 > 0:01:33On the gorgeous shores of Hawaii
0:01:33 > 0:01:36lives a horse with dreams of sporting glory.
0:01:39 > 0:01:43This is Blackjack, a seven-year-old thoroughbred gelding
0:01:43 > 0:01:45and wannabe polo star.
0:01:47 > 0:01:49Training with his rider Tiamo,
0:01:49 > 0:01:52he's desperate to break into one of the best polo teams in Hawaii.
0:01:58 > 0:02:00Blackjack and I, we work as a team.
0:02:00 > 0:02:03He really tries hard at everything he does.
0:02:03 > 0:02:07But polo's a tough sport and just trying hard isn't enough.
0:02:07 > 0:02:11Blackjack has to prove that he's good enough to make the championship team.
0:02:13 > 0:02:17During a polo game, two teams of four horses compete against each other.
0:02:17 > 0:02:18They have riders on their backs
0:02:18 > 0:02:23who try and hit the ball into goals with long-handled mallets.
0:02:23 > 0:02:24Get behind!
0:02:24 > 0:02:27The horses in the team are called polo ponies.
0:02:27 > 0:02:31Though they're not really ponies. They're highly-trained horses
0:02:31 > 0:02:35which have been carefully selected for their bursts of speed,
0:02:35 > 0:02:36stamina
0:02:36 > 0:02:38and agility.
0:02:41 > 0:02:44To play this game, they must be at their physical peak,
0:02:44 > 0:02:48with the keenest eyesight and sharpest hearing.
0:02:48 > 0:02:50Make no mistake, these are elite horses.
0:02:52 > 0:02:56Blackjack's eager to join their ranks by making the star team.
0:02:56 > 0:02:59The good news is that he's halfway there.
0:02:59 > 0:03:02As a polo pony, Blackjack, he has a lot of energy.
0:03:02 > 0:03:05He's always ready to go and do whatever you need.
0:03:05 > 0:03:09Whether stopping really quickly or speeding up really fast, he's on it.
0:03:09 > 0:03:12He'll give you everything he has. He has a lot of heart.
0:03:12 > 0:03:16The bad news? Polo ponies must be calm under pressure
0:03:16 > 0:03:18and never become over-excited.
0:03:20 > 0:03:23And, well, this one is feisty!
0:03:26 > 0:03:29Blackjack can be highly strung and over-excited,
0:03:29 > 0:03:32which could lead to mistakes on the polo field.
0:03:32 > 0:03:36It's really important for a polo horse to be focused on the rider,
0:03:36 > 0:03:39cos if they're not... I mean, it's a dangerous sport.
0:03:39 > 0:03:42You can be going out there 30mph and having to stop,
0:03:42 > 0:03:46because if you don't you might hit someone or injure you or your horse.
0:03:46 > 0:03:48So Blackjack's got his work cut out
0:03:48 > 0:03:52if he's going to stand any chance of joining the star team,
0:03:52 > 0:03:55because this is one elite team.
0:03:55 > 0:03:56Da Vinci,
0:03:56 > 0:03:58Charm,
0:03:58 > 0:04:00Popeye, Paco,
0:04:00 > 0:04:01Halloween,
0:04:01 > 0:04:02Shakira,
0:04:02 > 0:04:04Daisy.
0:04:04 > 0:04:06And, most important of all,
0:04:06 > 0:04:09the super-athletic and dazzling team leader, Riptide.
0:04:13 > 0:04:15Riptide is the best polo horse in Hawaii.
0:04:17 > 0:04:22Riptide's a magnificent horse - strong, fast and sure of foot.
0:04:22 > 0:04:27He's the star horse on the team and Blackjack worships him.
0:04:27 > 0:04:30Blackjack looks up to Riptide, but I don't think he lets him know it.
0:04:30 > 0:04:32I think it's his secret!
0:04:34 > 0:04:36Today is a monumental day.
0:04:36 > 0:04:38Blackjack and Riptide will be facing off
0:04:38 > 0:04:41to see if our up-and-comer has what it takes.
0:04:41 > 0:04:44If Blackjack impresses, then he's in the team.
0:04:44 > 0:04:47But if Riptide doesn't think he has the skills
0:04:47 > 0:04:50then Blackjack's polo-playing dream is over.
0:04:50 > 0:04:52SNIFFLING
0:04:52 > 0:04:55Later on, we reveal Blackjack's secret weapon.
0:04:55 > 0:04:59But will it be enough to get him into the elite team?
0:05:06 > 0:05:08We've been searching the Internet
0:05:08 > 0:05:11to see what animals get up to on their days off.
0:05:11 > 0:05:12Check out this hot-dogger.
0:05:14 > 0:05:16Not bad for a furrrrrst-time driver.
0:05:19 > 0:05:21"Hey, I'm driving here. Get out of my way!
0:05:21 > 0:05:24"This sure beats walkies."
0:05:28 > 0:05:31It's not just today that animals have had jobs.
0:05:31 > 0:05:33In fact, history reveals that in the past
0:05:33 > 0:05:36they've had even more amazing jobs than today.
0:05:36 > 0:05:40And here are those History's Heroes!
0:05:40 > 0:05:44Oh, hello there. I'm the world-famous animal historian,
0:05:44 > 0:05:49fashionista and trendsetter Professor John Bumbleman.
0:05:49 > 0:05:53Oh, do you like my new tie? It's a tie-dye tie all the way from Hawaii.
0:05:53 > 0:05:56Aloha-eeeee!
0:05:56 > 0:05:58It's the latest in high fashion.
0:05:58 > 0:06:01PHONE RINGS
0:06:01 > 0:06:04Hello? What's that? Tie-dyes have fallen out of style?
0:06:04 > 0:06:08- Tie-dye is so last week, you say?! - HE SQUEALS
0:06:09 > 0:06:11My, my. Fashion is a fickle business.
0:06:11 > 0:06:13I've seen this in the animal kingdom too.
0:06:13 > 0:06:17Let me try to talk you through the working animals from history
0:06:17 > 0:06:20who have found themselves back in fashion.
0:06:22 > 0:06:26Our first working hero to go back to the future is the humble maggot.
0:06:26 > 0:06:30As long ago as the 19th century, during the American Civil War,
0:06:30 > 0:06:33a certain doctor JF Zacharias employed maggots
0:06:33 > 0:06:36to care for his injured soldiers.
0:06:36 > 0:06:38If a patient had a particularly bad wound,
0:06:38 > 0:06:41the good doctor sent the maggots in.
0:06:41 > 0:06:43The maggots would jump into the wound
0:06:43 > 0:06:45and gobble up nasty, rotten flesh,
0:06:45 > 0:06:47leaving the wound perfectly clean
0:06:47 > 0:06:49and free from the risk of deadly infection.
0:06:49 > 0:06:53After the invention of antibiotics at the start of the 20th century
0:06:53 > 0:06:55the maggots were out of a job,
0:06:55 > 0:06:57as the wiggly fellas were deemed to have no place
0:06:57 > 0:06:59in a shiny, clean modern hospital.
0:06:59 > 0:07:02However, in the 21st century, everything's changed again.
0:07:02 > 0:07:05In 2004, the maggots returned to work.
0:07:05 > 0:07:08Today, you can even get treated by maggots on the British NHS.
0:07:08 > 0:07:10Nice comeback, Mr Maggot!
0:07:10 > 0:07:14The next return to vogue worthy of celebration involves
0:07:14 > 0:07:16a South American dog with a distinct look.
0:07:16 > 0:07:19It is the Xolo, who is completely bald!
0:07:20 > 0:07:23In the past, their baldness worked very well for them.
0:07:23 > 0:07:26The ancient Aztec people thought that Xolos were so special
0:07:26 > 0:07:32they considered them sacred and that these holy hounds' job was to guide them into heaven.
0:07:32 > 0:07:36But over the years they fell out of favour in place of hairier hounds,
0:07:36 > 0:07:40and by the early 1950s the Xolo was almost extinct in Mexico.
0:07:42 > 0:07:46A breeding program was launched to save the breed and today the Xolo
0:07:46 > 0:07:52has once again become popular, both in Mexico and around the world. Hurrah!
0:07:53 > 0:07:56Oh! You know, I've got a hairless dog.
0:07:56 > 0:08:01He wants me to buy him a wig, but I don't want TOUPEE for it.
0:08:04 > 0:08:06Get it? Hair? Toupee?
0:08:06 > 0:08:07Never mind.
0:08:07 > 0:08:12So now the working animal that has made the most dramatic return to popularity.
0:08:12 > 0:08:15It's the wo-o-o-olf!
0:08:15 > 0:08:21Yes, that old fairytale villain is making a comeback across the world.
0:08:21 > 0:08:27Due to the reputation of being dangerous to man, wolves were hunted to extinction almost everywhere.
0:08:29 > 0:08:33In Scotland, all the wolves were gone by the 1700s.
0:08:33 > 0:08:39And by 1926 in Yellowstone National Park, there were also no wolves to be found.
0:08:41 > 0:08:46But, with no more wolves, the food chain was in serious trouble.
0:08:46 > 0:08:51The elk in Yellowstone were very happy there were no wolves left to eat them.
0:08:51 > 0:08:55This was great for the elk, but bad for the trees.
0:08:55 > 0:09:00As the elk numbers grew, they needed more elk food,
0:09:00 > 0:09:04so they ate more young trees, which meant few new trees could grow.
0:09:04 > 0:09:08So, to fix this problem, wolves from Canada were brought to Yellowstone.
0:09:08 > 0:09:11Their job? To get the elk numbers down and the tree numbers up.
0:09:11 > 0:09:14The wolves were successful and are now living happily
0:09:14 > 0:09:17back at home in the park with plenty of trees and elks.
0:09:17 > 0:09:21The food chain is once again balanced. Well done, Mr Wo-o-o-olf.
0:09:21 > 0:09:27And thus concludes this week's back-in-fashion-tastic History's Heroes. Thank you.
0:09:30 > 0:09:34And now we're off to Falkirk, in Scotland.
0:09:38 > 0:09:42This is Charlie, a seven-and-a-half-year-old moggy
0:09:42 > 0:09:45who's a little bit, um...different.
0:09:45 > 0:09:49He's definitely not normal. Charlie has hidden super powers.
0:09:49 > 0:09:54Yes, you wouldn't believe it to look at him, but Charlie is a superhero.
0:09:57 > 0:10:01And just like Batman and Superman, Charlie keeps his secret identity hidden.
0:10:01 > 0:10:04In his daily life, he acts like an ordinary housecat.
0:10:04 > 0:10:09He hangs out with his friends, cuddles with owner Hannah...
0:10:09 > 0:10:10Charlie is my little sweetheart.
0:10:10 > 0:10:12..and enjoys the view from the fridge.
0:10:14 > 0:10:19Yes, Charlie may seem like most cats but, when the time is right, something happens.
0:10:19 > 0:10:22Charlie can do something that other cats aren't able to do.
0:10:22 > 0:10:25He's very different to most normal cats.
0:10:25 > 0:10:30Charlie revealed his secret powers on a very ordinary day.
0:10:30 > 0:10:32Hannah came home from shopping.
0:10:32 > 0:10:34She went through her building's large wooden doors
0:10:34 > 0:10:37and then through the revolving door.
0:10:37 > 0:10:41She passed Charlie, went into her flat and shut the door.
0:10:41 > 0:10:44Nothing unusual there. Charlie didn't go into the flat with Hannah.
0:10:44 > 0:10:46He seemed happy to stay in the corridor.
0:10:46 > 0:10:52Hannah unloaded her shopping, thinking about what she and Charlie were going to have for dinner,
0:10:52 > 0:10:56when suddenly Charlie materialised behind her!
0:10:56 > 0:10:59Charlie had somehow got into the flat! Hannah was pretty shocked.
0:10:59 > 0:11:02I was thinking, how is this cat doing this?
0:11:02 > 0:11:05How does Charlie all of a sudden appear as if from nowhere
0:11:05 > 0:11:08when I've shut the door, and Charlie hasn't followed me?
0:11:08 > 0:11:11I was beginning to think my cat was an invisible cat.
0:11:11 > 0:11:13He was able to walk through walls.
0:11:14 > 0:11:18Clearly, Charlie had a superpower. But what sort of power?
0:11:18 > 0:11:20Hannah racked her brains.
0:11:20 > 0:11:24Could he be a super-strong cat able to open doors?
0:11:26 > 0:11:30Was he able to fly through an open window?
0:11:30 > 0:11:35Hannah was baffled, but it wasn't for another two weeks before Charlie revealed his power.
0:11:35 > 0:11:41One day, I was actually out on the balcony hanging up some washing
0:11:41 > 0:11:45and all of a sudden, over the balcony wall, here comes Charlie.
0:11:45 > 0:11:48But what was Charlie doing up there?
0:11:48 > 0:11:51The balcony's five metres above the ground!
0:11:51 > 0:11:54It was then that all became clear.
0:11:56 > 0:11:58Charlie's indeed no normal moggy.
0:11:58 > 0:12:01Charlie is...
0:12:03 > 0:12:06Amazing! Let's see that again.
0:12:10 > 0:12:16Hannah had finally discovered how Charlie got from the corridor into the kitchen.
0:12:16 > 0:12:20It was all so obvious. He'd gone through the revolving door...
0:12:20 > 0:12:23Er, that's pretty cool.
0:12:23 > 0:12:25..opened the front door...
0:12:25 > 0:12:29and then used his spidey-powers!
0:12:32 > 0:12:35One last door...and into the flat.
0:12:35 > 0:12:37Am-ah-zing!
0:12:41 > 0:12:45Charlie now does this all the time as if it's easy-peasy.
0:12:45 > 0:12:46Spider-cat Charlie.
0:12:46 > 0:12:51Needless to say, Spider-cat has become quite the celebrity.
0:12:51 > 0:12:56A lot of newspapers are wanting the story of my superhero cat.
0:12:56 > 0:12:58It's been all over the Internet.
0:12:58 > 0:13:02I've had people in Japan, posting on websites.
0:13:02 > 0:13:04It's just been absolutely amazing.
0:13:04 > 0:13:09So Scotland, Japan - who knows where Charlie's powers will take him next?
0:13:09 > 0:13:13But one thing's for sure - this is one special cat!
0:13:13 > 0:13:16Charlie's definitely one of a kind.
0:13:21 > 0:13:24Hey! Just thought I'd take a break from filming.
0:13:24 > 0:13:28I stopped for one of my trusty vitamin shakes.
0:13:28 > 0:13:33It is delicious, nutritious and...delicious.
0:13:35 > 0:13:37Argh!
0:13:39 > 0:13:43A banana. It's got to be that cheeky monkey.
0:13:47 > 0:13:49Ugh! He keeps pranking me.
0:13:49 > 0:13:52Look what he did to my T-shirt!
0:13:53 > 0:13:55My favourite T-shirt!
0:13:56 > 0:13:57I can't believe it.
0:13:57 > 0:14:04I'm going to get you, you cheeky monkey!
0:14:05 > 0:14:08Take my vitamin drink.
0:14:12 > 0:14:14Urgh!
0:14:14 > 0:14:16Donkey bathwater?!
0:14:25 > 0:14:28And now we're off to Sarchi in Costa Rica.
0:14:35 > 0:14:39Way up high in the mountains of Costa Rica, school is starting for the day.
0:14:39 > 0:14:44But this is no normal school. It doesn't have classrooms or books.
0:14:44 > 0:14:47It doesn't even have teachers you don't like!
0:14:47 > 0:14:50Instead it has hooves, horns and carts.
0:14:50 > 0:14:54This is a school for oxen!
0:14:57 > 0:15:00Here are the most unusual teachers you'll ever come across.
0:15:02 > 0:15:05They're both two-year-old Brahman oxen.
0:15:05 > 0:15:08Their job is to teach the young oxen...
0:15:10 > 0:15:13..on the farms and in the town.
0:15:13 > 0:15:17Oxen were once an important part of working life in Costa Rica,
0:15:17 > 0:15:21essential to farming and transportation.
0:15:21 > 0:15:26Today, though, most Costa Ricans rely on cars, lorries and modern machinery.
0:15:26 > 0:15:30So it's important to Mapache and Chino that their traditions are kept alive
0:15:30 > 0:15:34and passed on to younger generations of both oxen and humans.
0:15:36 > 0:15:40Brahman oxen are distinct because of the hump over their shoulders,
0:15:40 > 0:15:45the loose skin on their throat and their large, droopy ears.
0:15:45 > 0:15:48But it's their incredible strength that makes them great workers.
0:15:48 > 0:15:53They can pull up to three times their own weight. That is strong!
0:15:53 > 0:15:57One of the most important ox traditions are their yokes and carts.
0:15:57 > 0:16:00No, not jokes, dodo!
0:16:00 > 0:16:02It's YOKES and carts.
0:16:02 > 0:16:08Yokes are carefully fitted wooden headpieces, which go into position between the two oxen.
0:16:08 > 0:16:12And the headband? No, it's not some crazy ox fashion.
0:16:12 > 0:16:15It's a flap to keep the flies away.
0:16:18 > 0:16:21Carts, or carretas, are then attached to the yokes.
0:16:21 > 0:16:27Carretas have been pulled by oxen in Costa Rica since the early 19th century.
0:16:29 > 0:16:32The colour of the cart indicates what work is being done.
0:16:32 > 0:16:36Pretty-coloured ones are used for parades and trips into town.
0:16:36 > 0:16:41This morning, though, the oxen will need a blue cart, because their first lesson is farm work.
0:16:43 > 0:16:47Today, Mapache and Chino are teaching Oso and Capulin.
0:16:47 > 0:16:50They'll also be handing out some tips to Steven.
0:16:50 > 0:16:54He may be young, but he knows exactly what he wants.
0:16:58 > 0:17:01Some Costa Rican farms still use oxen to plough fields,
0:17:01 > 0:17:04so it's an important skill for the pupils to learn.
0:17:04 > 0:17:06The teachers give a demonstration.
0:17:06 > 0:17:08Some pretty good skills there.
0:17:08 > 0:17:12Before the pupils are allowed anywhere near the ploughs...
0:17:12 > 0:17:15they first have to learn to go where they're told.
0:17:15 > 0:17:18But it's not as easy as it looks. No! No!
0:17:22 > 0:17:24Not that way!
0:17:24 > 0:17:25Where you going now?
0:17:25 > 0:17:30After a lot of practice, the students have finally got it...
0:17:30 > 0:17:31or have they?
0:17:35 > 0:17:40Farming class is over, so it's a bite of lunch before the afternoon lesson -

0:17:46 > 0:17:48Carretas are at the heart of...
0:17:52 > 0:17:55Before the arrival of motor vehicles,
0:17:55 > 0:17:59oxen-led carretas were one of the main forms of transport in Costa Rica

0:18:20 > 0:18:23So they watch their teachers with a keen eye, taking note of
0:18:23 > 0:18:28the pride, style and grace which Mapache and Chino demonstrate.
0:18:28 > 0:18:30Pretty impressive, eh?
0:18:30 > 0:18:34If I were an ox, this is just what I'd want to do.
0:18:36 > 0:18:41In the meantime, though, the pupils will have to be happy with their blue carts.
0:18:41 > 0:18:46They've got their work cut out, but you can be guaranteed that soon enough the pupils will be top oxen
0:18:46 > 0:18:50and that's all thanks to Mapache and Chino -
0:18:50 > 0:18:53the best oxen teachers in the world.

0:19:38 > 0:19:40Before the Fanimals get to work, some facts.
0:19:40 > 0:19:44Poodles and shepherds are among the top three clever-dog breeds.
0:19:50 > 0:19:52Zephyr and Pixel need to use all that intelligence

0:20:04 > 0:20:10whilst Zoe and Keira will work with the puppy. Let the experiment begin!
0:20:10 > 0:20:13Straight-off, Teo and Isaac have a cunning plan.
0:20:13 > 0:20:16Maybe we should rub the smell of this on it.
0:20:16 > 0:20:18OK. We could do that.
0:20:18 > 0:20:22Dogs love treats, so surely this is going to work.

0:20:24 > 0:20:25Zephyr! Zephyr!
0:20:25 > 0:20:28Er, maybe not.

0:20:31 > 0:20:35You throw the Frisbee, I'll go after it and then we throw the Frisbee
0:20:35 > 0:20:39without me going after it and get Pixel to get it.
0:20:39 > 0:20:43They're going to show the puppy what to do. Makes sense. Let's see how it goes.

0:20:49 > 0:20:53- Drop it! Drop it! Drop it! - Oh, no, hang on.

0:21:00 > 0:21:03Zephyr isn't really interested in the Frisbee.
0:21:03 > 0:21:06Every time we throw it, he'll either not go for it,
0:21:06 > 0:21:10or he'll look like he is, and then just run away.
0:21:12 > 0:21:15Young dog seems to be getting somewhere.
0:21:15 > 0:21:18But when he gets hold of the Frisbee, he's not letting go.
0:21:18 > 0:21:21How are we going to get it away?
0:21:21 > 0:21:26Time's up. Let's see if either of the dogs has learnt the new trick.

0:21:29 > 0:21:32Ready, steady, go!
0:21:32 > 0:21:36The young dog's on the move. Old dog's going nowhere.

0:22:49 > 0:22:54Seven-year-old Blackjack is desperate to make it into the elite polo team.
0:22:54 > 0:22:57The problem is that polo ponies need excellent temperaments,
0:22:57 > 0:23:01but Blackjack has a reputation for getting overexcited.
0:23:01 > 0:23:04BLACKJACK WHINNIES
0:23:07 > 0:23:11He must control this if he's to do well in today's trial polo game.
0:23:11 > 0:23:16If he impresses everyone - in particular team captain Riptide -

0:23:26 > 0:23:31Blackjack's challenge is to keep his cool, but I'm sure he'll be ready.

0:24:12 > 0:24:16Make sure that he's perfectly tuned-up and ready for the match.
0:24:16 > 0:24:18..and mentally.
0:24:18 > 0:24:23Blackjack's challenge today is to keep his cool and not get too excited about things.
0:24:23 > 0:24:26And there's no question where Blackjack's thoughts are.
0:24:26 > 0:24:28Riptide might be in his head a little bit.
0:24:28 > 0:24:30I'm sure he's thinking about it.
0:24:32 > 0:24:36Even the star team's arrival can't break Blackjack's focus.

0:24:40 > 0:24:44Looks like Blackjack's trying to psyche them out.

0:25:43 > 0:25:45Things quickly get worse.

0:25:49 > 0:25:52by scoring the perfect solo goal. 2-0 whites.
0:25:57 > 0:25:59The score line gets to Blackjack.
