0:01:07 > 0:01:10I got him from a rescue home about two years ago.

0:01:10 > 0:01:12He's been a faithful friend.

0:01:12 > 0:01:16Just like our first story of this hearing dog, Sam.

0:01:17 > 0:01:21First, we're off to Nottinghamshire, in the UK.

0:01:31 > 0:01:33- Good boy, Sam!- Meet Sam and Lauren.

0:01:33 > 0:01:36Together, they make up an incredible team.

0:01:37 > 0:01:42Lauren, along with 35,000 other children in Britain, is deaf...

0:01:44 > 0:01:46..and Sam is her official hearing dog.

0:01:46 > 0:01:50He acts as Lauren's ears and keeps her safe from harm...

0:01:50 > 0:01:54- ALARM BEEPS - ..where there's cause for alarm.

0:01:54 > 0:01:58Sam is a superhero. Unfortunately, he doesn't fly.

0:01:58 > 0:02:01He does something far more important.

0:02:05 > 0:02:10And it's a duty Sam's committed to 24 hours a day.

0:02:11 > 0:02:14Things were tough for Lauren before Sam worked for her.

0:02:14 > 0:02:17She's proud to have him, because before she was nervous.

0:02:17 > 0:02:20She felt very isolated from the community.

0:02:20 > 0:02:23But that was before Super Sam came on the scene!

0:02:23 > 0:02:26Good boy, Sam.

0:02:30 > 0:02:35In the six months he's been working for Lauren, things have changed.

0:02:35 > 0:02:38Sam has stopped her from being as nervous as what she was.

0:02:38 > 0:02:43He's there at the side of her. It's given her a lot of confidence.

0:02:46 > 0:02:51# Oh, you're the best friend That I ever had... #

0:02:51 > 0:02:54Yes, Sam and Lauren are quite the team,

0:02:54 > 0:02:57and now Lauren wants to prove to everyone just how amazing Sam is.

0:03:01 > 0:03:04She's signed him up for a dog agility course.

0:03:04 > 0:03:09It's the perfect chance for Sam to show just how strong their bond is.

0:03:09 > 0:03:13Sam's never let Lauren down, but the course is a notorious test

0:03:13 > 0:03:15of a dog's physical skills.

0:03:16 > 0:03:21It features tricky obstacles, including tunnels,

0:03:21 > 0:03:23jumps,

0:03:23 > 0:03:26- the dreaded...- MAN BELLOWS: A-frame!

0:03:26 > 0:03:29Believe me, it's no walk in the park.

0:03:30 > 0:03:33To succeed, Sam will have to listen carefully to Lauren's commands...

0:03:33 > 0:03:35Over!

0:03:35 > 0:03:39..making it the ultimate test of their communication.

0:03:41 > 0:03:43When it comes to communication,

0:03:43 > 0:03:46Sam and the other golden Labradors have a head start.

0:03:46 > 0:03:50They're known for their intelligence and great temperament,

0:03:50 > 0:03:54making it clear why they make such great assistance dogs.

0:03:54 > 0:03:56It's a job that comes naturally to Sam,

0:03:56 > 0:03:59- especially the most important bit... - ALARM BEEPS

0:03:59 > 0:04:03..alerting Lauren when the fire alarm sounds.

0:04:04 > 0:04:08Sam going down on all fours is his signal to Lauren

0:04:08 > 0:04:10that it's time to leave.

0:04:10 > 0:04:14And that's not the only way Sam's helping Lauren's family.

0:04:14 > 0:04:17- He's got them to communicate better.- Prior to having Sam,

0:04:17 > 0:04:21we had to physically go up and get Lauren or shout very loudly.

0:04:21 > 0:04:26- But not any more. - Good boy. Take it to Lauren.

0:04:26 > 0:04:29Now Sam carries notes to Lauren from her mum and dad.

0:04:36 > 0:04:40To even get to that point, Sam has undergone 18 months of training.

0:04:40 > 0:04:42Training has made him very special.

0:04:42 > 0:04:46He's only one of 12 hearing dogs paired with a child in the country,

0:04:46 > 0:04:49and he's clearly done very well.

0:04:49 > 0:04:51They've got a wonderful bond.

0:04:51 > 0:04:55It's quite obvious when you see them together.

0:04:55 > 0:04:57# You've got a friend in me... #

0:04:57 > 0:05:01But that bond is about to be really tested amongst the obstacles.

0:05:01 > 0:05:06Sam's determined not to let Lauren down, so the pressure's on.

0:05:06 > 0:05:08Has he got what it takes?

0:05:08 > 0:05:11Later, will Sam be able to show off his skills?

0:05:11 > 0:05:14- Good boy. - Or will he let Lauren down?

0:05:19 > 0:05:22It's not just today that animals have had jobs.

0:05:22 > 0:05:25History reveals that in the past,

0:05:25 > 0:05:28they've had even more amazing jobs than today.

0:05:28 > 0:05:31And here are those History's Heroes!

0:05:50 > 0:05:52People have been gripped

0:05:52 > 0:05:56by my amazing stories of the fantastic and the famous,

0:05:56 > 0:05:58just like these creatures.

0:05:58 > 0:06:01Our first famous working animal is Clara, an Indian rhinoceros,

0:06:01 > 0:06:05who found fame when she became one of the first living rhinos

0:06:05 > 0:06:07to be seen in Europe.

0:06:07 > 0:06:12She arrived in Rotterdam in 1741 and was an animal instant hit.

0:06:12 > 0:06:15People had never seen an animal like her.

0:06:15 > 0:06:19When word of her arrival spread, everyone wanted to see Clara.

0:06:19 > 0:06:21So she set off on a tour of Europe...

0:06:21 > 0:06:24for the next 17 years.

0:06:24 > 0:06:27Yes, 17 years!

0:06:28 > 0:06:33During her road trip, Clara visited Italy, Prague, Switzerland, Denmark,

0:06:33 > 0:06:36- Poland, Holland and the UK... - TRUMPET FANFARE

0:06:36 > 0:06:40..meeting royals galore and posing for artists.

0:06:40 > 0:06:44She was so famous, she even had navy ships named after her.

0:06:44 > 0:06:47That is one famous rhino!

0:06:47 > 0:06:53Our next famous hero worked way back in 1945 in Colorado, USA.

0:06:53 > 0:06:57At first, no-one had ever heard of a chicken called Mike,

0:06:57 > 0:07:01apart from Lloyd Olsen, the farmer who planned on eating him.

0:07:01 > 0:07:05Lloyd chopped off Mike's head, but Mike's body had other ideas.

0:07:05 > 0:07:07It simply got up and walked off!

0:07:07 > 0:07:11Miraculously, his brainstem was left on his body,

0:07:11 > 0:07:15meaning Mike could walk around without a head.

0:07:15 > 0:07:18He survived like this for a record-breaking 18 months.

0:07:18 > 0:07:21As his fame grew, he even went on tour,

0:07:21 > 0:07:25earning up to 4,500 US dollars a month,

0:07:25 > 0:07:30making it a no-brainer for Mike to be awarded History's Hero!

0:07:30 > 0:07:32It may have worked for Mike,

0:07:32 > 0:07:36but for any budding celebs out there, a word of advice...

0:07:36 > 0:07:41Try not to lose your head! Do you get it?!

0:07:41 > 0:07:46Now, on to our final tale of animal celebrity.

0:07:46 > 0:07:49In 1948, in the Hong Kong docks,

0:07:49 > 0:07:53a stray cat called Simon started work on a navy boat -

0:07:53 > 0:07:56HMS Amethyst - as the ship's cat.

0:07:56 > 0:07:59His job took him out to sea and into war.

0:07:59 > 0:08:04One day, the enemy blasted the ship, causing serious injury to Simon.

0:08:04 > 0:08:06Simon was rushed to the medical bay

0:08:06 > 0:08:10where he was treated alongside the injured sailors.

0:08:10 > 0:08:15Simon survived, winning the crew's respect, and showing such heroics

0:08:15 > 0:08:19that the captain wrote back to London to report the cat's bravery.

0:08:19 > 0:08:22Word spread, and with the help of newspaper reports,

0:08:22 > 0:08:25Simon's story was told across the country.

0:08:25 > 0:08:28He became one of the most famous faces of the day

0:08:28 > 0:08:32and had won his way into the hearts of the British public.

0:08:32 > 0:08:35People sent Simon letters and he received so much fan mail

0:08:35 > 0:08:40that the captain had to appoint a press officer to deal with the post.

0:08:40 > 0:08:44- That is one famous cat! Meow! - CAT MEOWS

0:08:44 > 0:08:47So congratulations to Simon.

0:08:47 > 0:08:50You are top of the History's Heroes Pops.

0:08:50 > 0:08:53I love a good awards ceremony - tears, laughter

0:08:53 > 0:08:57and lots of lots of photographers!

0:08:57 > 0:09:00I'd just like to thank you all for watching this week's

0:09:00 > 0:09:02History's Heroes,

0:09:02 > 0:09:05in particular, you, the paparazzi.

0:09:05 > 0:09:07Tricked you! Whoo-hoo! John Bumbleman!

0:09:07 > 0:09:11I did it!

0:09:14 > 0:09:18And now we're off to California, in the USA.

0:09:25 > 0:09:28This is fire-safety officer Henry.

0:09:28 > 0:09:31He's a one-year-old goat in a team who prevents fires

0:09:31 > 0:09:35by eating the vegetation, which can cause wildfires.

0:09:35 > 0:09:38It's a job he's pretty good at.

0:09:38 > 0:09:42He has a fun job. All he does is eat.

0:09:42 > 0:09:47California is so hot that plants, or brush, frequently dry up

0:09:47 > 0:09:49making it easy for fires to start

0:09:49 > 0:09:52if lightening strikes or campfires get out of control.

0:09:52 > 0:09:55So, who do you call to prevent those fires?

0:09:55 > 0:09:59- Henry!- That's right. You call Henry.

0:09:59 > 0:10:01This is Henry's family.

0:10:01 > 0:10:05They run a ranch for Henry and 350 of his fire-safety colleagues,

0:10:05 > 0:10:10who, today, have been called out for a very important job.

0:10:10 > 0:10:13George has been threatened by fires in the past

0:10:13 > 0:10:16and needs to make sure that his ranch is safe.

0:10:16 > 0:10:21It's another day in the office for Henry and the fire prevention team.

0:10:21 > 0:10:26But this job's different. This one comes with a big, new challenge.

0:10:26 > 0:10:31He's going to spend the night and stay on the site, clearing brush.

0:10:31 > 0:10:36This is Henry's first job spending the night away from home.

0:10:36 > 0:10:40That may be scary, but Henry's going to have to put any nerves aside,

0:10:40 > 0:10:42as this is a big job.

0:10:42 > 0:10:46- Eat this.- Fortunately, Henry is a true professional.

0:10:47 > 0:10:52He can consume the equivalent of one bag of shopping every day,

0:10:52 > 0:10:55and he's only going to get hungrier.

0:10:55 > 0:10:58When Henry grows up, he'll eat ten bags of groceries.

0:10:58 > 0:11:00Although eating for a living may seem like a dream,

0:11:00 > 0:11:03it's not without its dangers.

0:11:03 > 0:11:07And when I say dangers, I mean dangers.

0:11:07 > 0:11:12Henry works under threat of attack from predators, including coyotes,

0:11:12 > 0:11:17- bobcats, and mountain lions. - PREDATORS ROAR

0:11:17 > 0:11:21But Henry's a smart goat. He always has protection when he's on the job.

0:11:21 > 0:11:24Henry will be going to his job site with some bodyguards.

0:11:24 > 0:11:26A Great Pyrenees guards him.

0:11:26 > 0:11:30A Collie Wrangler makes sure Henry stays with the group.

0:11:30 > 0:11:33But will those guys be able to help Henry when it gets dark?

0:11:33 > 0:11:35We'll soon find out.

0:11:37 > 0:11:40It's time to go to work.

0:11:44 > 0:11:48Yummy, yummy, everyone's hungry, which is a good start.

0:11:48 > 0:11:50There's a lot of work to be done.

0:11:50 > 0:11:54As the rest of the team goes crazy, Henry takes a more refined approach.

0:11:54 > 0:11:57He prefers a meal with a view.

0:11:58 > 0:12:02- Ah, Henry, you old romantic, you! - ROMANTIC MUSIC

0:12:03 > 0:12:06It's soon time for Constantine to go home

0:12:06 > 0:12:11and for Henry and the other goats to work without human supervision.

0:12:12 > 0:12:14Good luck, Henry.

0:12:18 > 0:12:22It's not long after 3am. I've never been up this late before.

0:12:22 > 0:12:25- There's been some scary noises. - BLEATING

0:12:25 > 0:12:27What's that? Whoo!

0:12:27 > 0:12:31Phew! It's OK. It was just Henry eating.

0:12:31 > 0:12:35Attaboy! My nerves can't take this. Let's hope Henry can hold up.

0:12:37 > 0:12:39Finally, it's dawn.

0:12:39 > 0:12:43So, was Henry able to handle his first night away from home?

0:12:43 > 0:12:48Yes, he was! There he is, looking as professional as ever.

0:12:48 > 0:12:50The nightshift was no problem for this goat

0:12:50 > 0:12:53and the whole farm has been cleared!

0:12:54 > 0:12:57Not one bit of unwanted vegetation in sight.

0:12:57 > 0:13:00The fire risk is gone. But what does the family think?

0:13:00 > 0:13:03How do you think Henry did?

0:13:03 > 0:13:05- Good!- You can say that again!

0:13:05 > 0:13:09Well done, Henry. You're one brave fire-safety goat.

0:13:09 > 0:13:13Go and get some breakfast. You must be staaaarving!

0:13:17 > 0:13:20Hi. I'm just looking for that rapscallion

0:13:20 > 0:13:22who's been playing all those tricks on me.

0:13:22 > 0:13:27I know who he is and what he looks like, I've just got to find him.

0:13:27 > 0:13:30We know him as the Cheeky Monkey.

0:13:30 > 0:13:32HE GIGGLES

0:13:33 > 0:13:36I am sick of him playing pranks on me.

0:13:36 > 0:13:38I know what he looks like, where to find him,

0:13:38 > 0:13:41I just have to find him through this bush.

0:13:41 > 0:13:45- I need something to help me do that. - # Hallelujah! #

0:13:45 > 0:13:47Brilliant!

0:13:49 > 0:13:52Now I'll find him! Ha!

0:13:52 > 0:13:54Come on, Cheeky Monkey, show yourself.

0:13:54 > 0:13:57No-one plays a prank on John Barrowman

0:13:57 > 0:13:59and gets away with it!

0:13:59 > 0:14:05Grr! No sign of him yet. I'd better get back to set.

0:14:05 > 0:14:09That's all for today. Thanks for watching Animals At Work.

0:14:09 > 0:14:12Er, John, have you looked in the mirror recently?

0:14:12 > 0:14:16- Why? Give me a mirror now! - DRAMATIC MUSIC

0:14:16 > 0:14:19- HE GASPS - It's that cheeky monkey!

0:14:22 > 0:14:25Next, it's off to Devon, in England.

0:14:31 > 0:14:33# Brass monkey

0:14:33 > 0:14:35# That funky monkey

0:14:35 > 0:14:39# Brass monkey, junkie That funky monkey... #

0:14:39 > 0:14:42Tyrone is a crested black macaque with a difference.

0:14:42 > 0:14:46He's the resident food critic at his zoo.

0:14:46 > 0:14:50Yep, you heard me right! Tyrone is a food critic.

0:14:51 > 0:14:56And it's a job he's perfect for, given his picky eating habits.

0:14:56 > 0:14:58Tyrone can be very fussy with his food.

0:14:58 > 0:15:01If he's happy with it, everyone else will join in.

0:15:01 > 0:15:02When it comes to food,

0:15:02 > 0:15:06all the other animals in the zoo follow Tyrone's lead.

0:15:06 > 0:15:09Everyone knows he has great taste.

0:15:09 > 0:15:11If he doesn't like something word travels fast,

0:15:11 > 0:15:14from the giraffes, to the owls,

0:15:14 > 0:15:16to the tigers, to the zebras.

0:15:16 > 0:15:19In fact, all over the zoo.

0:15:19 > 0:15:21Tyrone's a natural food critic.

0:15:21 > 0:15:26His teeth and varied eating habits mean he'll try almost anything.

0:15:26 > 0:15:30But liking it is a different story.

0:15:30 > 0:15:33Wild macaques live in the rainforests of Indonesia

0:15:33 > 0:15:37and eat all sorts of plants, fruit and insects.

0:15:37 > 0:15:41They even use their cheek pouches to save food until it's time to eat.

0:15:43 > 0:15:48Today, Tyrone's sampling a potential new addition to the zoo's menu.

0:15:49 > 0:15:53Pak choi is a delicious and nutritious Chinese cabbage

0:15:53 > 0:15:57that's high in fibre, protein, vitamins and minerals.

0:15:57 > 0:16:00Everyone at the zoo is especially proud of the pak choi.

0:16:00 > 0:16:05It's been grown using a vertical growing system.

0:16:05 > 0:16:09This system involves stacking plants on vertical platforms.

0:16:09 > 0:16:12It allows a huge number and variety of plants

0:16:12 > 0:16:14to be grown in a very small space.

0:16:14 > 0:16:20Which means lots and lots of yummy food for all the different animals.

0:16:20 > 0:16:22But like anything grown at the zoo,

0:16:22 > 0:16:25before the pak choi makes it anywhere near the menu,

0:16:25 > 0:16:27it needs Tyrone's seal of approval.

0:16:27 > 0:16:30If Tyrone likes it, it gets his go-ahead

0:16:30 > 0:16:33and can be rolled out to all the other animals.

0:16:33 > 0:16:36If not, it's "Bye-bye, pak choi,"

0:16:36 > 0:16:38which would be bad news for the keepers

0:16:38 > 0:16:41who spent all that time growing it.

0:16:41 > 0:16:45Andrew's feeling the pressure. It's his job to feed the macaques.

0:16:45 > 0:16:48We are worried about giving Tyrone the pak choi.

0:16:48 > 0:16:52If he doesn't like it, we won't be feeding it to the rest of the zoo.

0:16:52 > 0:16:55So it's clearly a big day for the zoo.

0:16:55 > 0:17:00All right, Tyrone, get ready for your first taste of pak choi.

0:17:00 > 0:17:04Andrew throws the pak choi into the monkey enclosure.

0:17:06 > 0:17:10- Mmm. Tyrone samples a leaf. - DRAMATIC MUSIC

0:17:10 > 0:17:13What's this?

0:17:13 > 0:17:18Oh, he's tossed it aside and stormed indoors without properly trying it!

0:17:18 > 0:17:20No word either way from Tyrone.

0:17:20 > 0:17:24This is a disastrous blow to the pak choi project.

0:17:24 > 0:17:27The rain's not improving the odds of success.

0:17:27 > 0:17:31I don't think he's going for the pak choi because of the weather.

0:17:31 > 0:17:36Andrew has one last chance to get Tyrone to OK the pak choi.

0:17:36 > 0:17:40He puts some of the greens inside Tyrone's enclosure.

0:17:40 > 0:17:44This isn't how he normally feeds him but the weather leaves no choice.

0:17:46 > 0:17:50Tyrone comes over. He has a good look around.

0:17:50 > 0:17:52I can't look! Neither can this guy!

0:17:52 > 0:17:57I'm going to be a monkey's uncle. Tyrone is eating the pak choi!

0:17:57 > 0:18:00Amazing scenes! Yummy, yummy, crunch, crunch!

0:18:00 > 0:18:02Immediately, Tyrone's influence is on display.

0:18:02 > 0:18:06Seeing that he's approved it, the other monkeys tuck in...

0:18:06 > 0:18:08# Eat it, eat it... #

0:18:08 > 0:18:10..even the little baby fella.

0:18:12 > 0:18:17Tyrone's endorsement means the other animals get to give it a go.

0:18:17 > 0:18:19The giraffes gobble it,

0:18:19 > 0:18:21the baboons love it,

0:18:21 > 0:18:25and the elephant, she can't get enough of it.

0:18:27 > 0:18:30So the animals have another tasty addition to their menu

0:18:30 > 0:18:36all thanks to Tyrone, the food critic who does not monkey around.

0:18:39 > 0:18:43- Now, those kids who love animals, it's the...- Fanimals, yes!

0:18:44 > 0:18:48Let's meet the Fanimals, our animal detectives...

0:18:53 > 0:18:57Say hello to the birds with the most eggs-cellent job on the farm,

0:18:57 > 0:18:59it's the chickens.

0:18:59 > 0:19:02# Chicken train, running all day... #

0:19:02 > 0:19:06A chicken's job is to lay eggs. And they're pretty good at it.

0:19:07 > 0:19:09The farmer suspects they could be better,

0:19:09 > 0:19:11so he's drafted in the Fanimals

0:19:11 > 0:19:14to try and help them with their egg laying.

0:19:14 > 0:19:17Each Fanimal will team up with a hen.

0:19:17 > 0:19:21Teams will try different techniques to encourage speedy egg-laying.

0:19:21 > 0:19:24The team who lay an egg the quickest wins.

0:19:24 > 0:19:27- The contenders are... - BELL DINGS

0:19:31 > 0:19:35They're all female chickens, also known as hens.

0:19:35 > 0:19:38The average hen lays 259 eggs a year.

0:19:39 > 0:19:44But these girls are exceptionally good at their job

0:19:44 > 0:19:47and often lay an egg a day.

0:19:47 > 0:19:50Judging the teams will be our expert, Farmer Ed.

0:19:50 > 0:19:53# We are the eggmen... #

0:19:53 > 0:19:57Down to business. The Fanimals need to select their chicken.

0:19:57 > 0:20:00Take your time. Your decision is crucial.

0:20:00 > 0:20:04The key to winning this challenge might be picking the right hen.

0:20:06 > 0:20:10- Which one do you want?- Ruth. - I've decided to go with Rachel.

0:20:38 > 0:20:43- I'm going to help mine with science. - That would be the scientist.

0:20:43 > 0:20:45I'm just natural!

0:20:45 > 0:20:48And the good old-fashioned natural method.

0:20:48 > 0:20:51Each team has 30 minutes to try their technique.

0:20:51 > 0:20:55Whichever team lays an egg first wins.

0:21:13 > 0:21:18Next it's Team 2, Lukas and Rock, and the scientific approach.

0:21:20 > 0:21:24- Feel the light.- Lukas is testing out a scientific fact

0:21:24 > 0:21:28that the more light hens receive, the more eggs they lay.

0:21:28 > 0:21:30But will this bright idea work?

0:21:30 > 0:21:35Last it's Team 3, Sarah and Ruth, and their natural approach.

0:21:36 > 0:21:40- I support you in your natural space. - # You make me feel... #

0:22:40 > 0:22:42Sorry, guys. No eggs.

0:22:42 > 0:22:46Bad luck, Fanimals. None of your techniques worked.

0:22:46 > 0:22:49However, Lukas was on the right track.

0:22:49 > 0:22:52Scientific experiments in the past have proven the more light there is

0:22:52 > 0:22:55the more eggs chickens lay!

0:22:55 > 0:22:57He didn't pull it off today.
