0:00:02 > 0:00:05Hi and welcome to the show Animals At Work.

0:00:05 > 0:00:09All over the planet, there are millions of animals that have jobs.

0:00:09 > 0:00:11Oh!

0:00:11 > 0:00:15We bring you the funniest, coolest and most bizarre...

0:00:15 > 0:00:18animals at work.

0:00:18 > 0:00:20Here's what we got for ya.

0:00:20 > 0:00:26Logan's training to have the finest nose in the dog world.

0:00:26 > 0:00:30Midge The Athlete faces the toughest race of her life.

0:00:30 > 0:00:35And Wally The Worm stands up to the cows on the Fanimals farm.

0:00:35 > 0:00:36But now it's...

0:00:36 > 0:00:38show time!

0:00:55 > 0:00:58Get... no, don't eat the rocks. Get the keys.

0:00:58 > 0:01:00Come on, find, yeah, find them.

0:01:00 > 0:01:03Oh, hi everybody. I'm in the middle of a bit of a manhunt.

0:01:03 > 0:01:07It's a key hunt because I've lost my keys and Jack's

0:01:07 > 0:01:08trying to find them for me.

0:01:08 > 0:01:13Jack, come on. Find the keys, find the keys. What? No, no.

0:01:13 > 0:01:17I said keys, not cheese.

0:01:18 > 0:01:21While we keep looking, check out this career canine

0:01:21 > 0:01:24who enjoys the sweet smell of success... or sewage.

0:01:25 > 0:01:28First, we're travelling to Michigan in the USA.

0:01:37 > 0:01:38This is Logan,

0:01:38 > 0:01:42a two-year-old collie mix hoping to qualify for his dream job...

0:01:42 > 0:01:45helping to save the planet by sniffing out pollution.

0:01:49 > 0:01:53Logan is in training and has been for several months

0:01:53 > 0:01:56to be a environmental pollution sniffing dog.

0:01:59 > 0:02:01Ever since he was adopted as a rescue dog

0:02:01 > 0:02:03by Karen, Scott and Ashleigh,

0:02:03 > 0:02:05he's been in training,

0:02:05 > 0:02:08under the close supervision of his boss Sable.

0:02:11 > 0:02:15Sable's a role model for sniffer dogs everywhere.

0:02:15 > 0:02:17Sable is Logan's mentor.

0:02:17 > 0:02:19Sable, let's get to work.

0:02:19 > 0:02:23For the last two years, he's been protecting the environment

0:02:23 > 0:02:26by detecting raw sewage and detergents

0:02:26 > 0:02:29flowing into the water supply by locating them with his nose.

0:02:29 > 0:02:31Come on. Come on over here.

0:02:31 > 0:02:35Make no mistake about it - this is very important work.

0:02:35 > 0:02:38Human pee and poo contains dangerous bacteria that can spread disease,

0:02:38 > 0:02:42so we definitely don't want it getting in our drinking water.

0:02:42 > 0:02:43And detergents?

0:02:43 > 0:02:47Well, they make fish ill, which can make us ill if we eat them,

0:02:47 > 0:02:49so we don't want that in our waterways either.

0:02:49 > 0:02:51The work that Sable and Logan are doing

0:02:51 > 0:02:53are going to help people like me

0:02:53 > 0:02:56because it won't pollute the rivers and the lakes

0:02:56 > 0:02:58that we like to swim and fish in.

0:02:58 > 0:03:02Sometimes due to illegal or bad pipe connections,

0:03:02 > 0:03:04there can be a problem,

0:03:04 > 0:03:07and when these problems arise, they need solving quickly.

0:03:07 > 0:03:11Using machinery, it takes well-trained humans

0:03:11 > 0:03:14three months to detect chemicals in the water.

0:03:14 > 0:03:16But why spend all that time doing something

0:03:16 > 0:03:20which Sable can do in as little as five seconds with his nose?!

0:03:21 > 0:03:25He's been trained to identify the smell of pollutants brilliantly.

0:03:25 > 0:03:27He's so good, his bosses say he gets it right

0:03:27 > 0:03:29nearly 90 per cent of the time.

0:03:32 > 0:03:34Yes! Good boy.

0:03:34 > 0:03:37So Sable's sniffer is in enormous demand to find the bad chemicals,

0:03:37 > 0:03:42and more chemical companies turn to him when they have a problem.

0:03:42 > 0:03:45All this work means that Sable's been rushed off his paws.

0:03:45 > 0:03:48So now, to make life a little easier, he wants an assistant,

0:03:48 > 0:03:52which is where Logan comes in.

0:03:52 > 0:03:54Yes, under the supervision of Sable,

0:03:54 > 0:03:57Logan's become an apprentice pollution sniffer.

0:03:57 > 0:03:59It's a dream come true for Logan,

0:03:59 > 0:04:01who's had his share of problems.

0:04:01 > 0:04:04Sable and Logan are rescue dogs. We got Sable from a shelter

0:04:04 > 0:04:05and we got Logan from a family

0:04:05 > 0:04:08who was having of trouble with him

0:04:08 > 0:04:10cos he was just too high of energy for them.

0:04:10 > 0:04:13Logan! No, no. Logan! That's for Blitz.

0:04:13 > 0:04:15His new family gave Logan something

0:04:15 > 0:04:18to put that extra energy into,

0:04:18 > 0:04:22and he's determined to follow in Sable's footsteps

0:04:22 > 0:04:25and make it as a sniffer dog. There's a problem.

0:04:25 > 0:04:27Things aren't always perfect

0:04:27 > 0:04:31so some days their little sniffer's off a little bit or something

0:04:31 > 0:04:33so it may be that he could bypass something.

0:04:33 > 0:04:37That's right. Sometimes Logan's nose just isn't, well, on the nose.

0:04:37 > 0:04:41But the time has come for him to get his sniffer in gear.

0:04:42 > 0:04:45He's been booked for his first job,

0:04:45 > 0:04:49a genuine call-out with a real sewage threat.

0:04:49 > 0:04:53Important officials will be there so it's vital that Logan performs.

0:04:53 > 0:04:55Since there'll be potential clients there,

0:04:55 > 0:04:59we want to show them how good we've been doing with the dogs

0:04:59 > 0:05:01so we want the dogs to do a good job so that they go,

0:05:01 > 0:05:04"We'll call them next time we need something."

0:05:04 > 0:05:07This is serious stuff.

0:05:07 > 0:05:10To make sure he's ready, Logan will undergo

0:05:10 > 0:05:12the final stage of his training...

0:05:15 > 0:05:19..the contamination assault course.

0:05:19 > 0:05:24Here he'll have to prove that he's able to identify pollution odours.

0:05:24 > 0:05:27The stakes are high. With his dream job in the balance,

0:05:27 > 0:05:31Logan can't afford for his nose to let him down.

0:05:31 > 0:05:34This is the last session before your big day.

0:05:34 > 0:05:37Will he qualify as a super-sniffer?

0:05:37 > 0:05:38Is everybody ready?

0:05:40 > 0:05:45Later - Logan attempts the contamination assault course.

0:05:47 > 0:05:50It's those kids who love animals. It's the...

0:05:50 > 0:05:51Fanimals. Yes!

0:05:53 > 0:05:56And here they are, our animal detectives.

0:05:56 > 0:05:58Sophie,

0:05:58 > 0:05:59Ben,

0:05:59 > 0:06:01Georgia,

0:06:01 > 0:06:03and Martin.

0:06:03 > 0:06:06Today, the Fanimals face their toughest assignment yet -

0:06:06 > 0:06:10helping their new friend, Wally The Worm.

0:06:10 > 0:06:14Wally is a farmer at this farm in Kent.

0:06:14 > 0:06:17He shares his field with these cows.

0:06:17 > 0:06:19Wally gets on OK with the cows,

0:06:19 > 0:06:22but he wants to prove that he and his fellow worms

0:06:22 > 0:06:24are the real heavyweights of the farm,

0:06:24 > 0:06:27rather than the cows, who get all the credit.

0:06:29 > 0:06:33Wally's really proud of his job, and so he should be.

0:06:33 > 0:06:36He and his earthworm mates plough the farm's soil

0:06:36 > 0:06:38by tunnelling through it.

0:06:38 > 0:06:41This means that the soil can circulate water and air better,

0:06:41 > 0:06:43which is brilliant for the plant roots,

0:06:43 > 0:06:45they love water and air.

0:06:45 > 0:06:49Of course, better plant roots mean lovely, tasty plants...

0:06:49 > 0:06:51which is just what the farm wants.

0:06:51 > 0:06:53In fact, worms are so good for the soil

0:06:53 > 0:06:57that even their droppings make it better.

0:06:57 > 0:07:01So clearly Wally's job is important, but is he right in thinking

0:07:01 > 0:07:06that makes worms greater farming heavyweights than cows?

0:07:06 > 0:07:09He's got a theory that the combined weight of him

0:07:09 > 0:07:11and the other worms in the field

0:07:11 > 0:07:15is heavier than the combined weight of all the cows.

0:07:15 > 0:07:19It's a big claim that needs some serious investigation work...

0:07:19 > 0:07:20There's one on this side!

0:07:20 > 0:07:24..which is why Wally's drafted in the Fanimals.

0:07:24 > 0:07:27The Fanimals have really got their work cut out.

0:07:27 > 0:07:30It's been a dry season, and as worms need moisture,

0:07:30 > 0:07:32there may not be many of them around.

0:07:32 > 0:07:36Today, the Fanimals, alongside the worm professor, Chris,

0:07:36 > 0:07:38will be doing the sums for Wally.

0:07:38 > 0:07:40When we find them, put them in this water.

0:07:40 > 0:07:42They'll be happy in there.

0:07:42 > 0:07:44- Another one! - They'll weigh all the worms

0:07:44 > 0:07:48and compare it to the weight of the cows.

0:07:48 > 0:07:50He kind of tickles.

0:07:50 > 0:07:52OK, it's down to business.

0:07:52 > 0:07:58First, the Fanimals measure off a one-metre-squared plot.

0:07:58 > 0:08:02Next, they dig a hole in the plot.

0:08:02 > 0:08:04Loving your hole, Fanimals!

0:08:04 > 0:08:08Next, the Fanimals find all the worms in the hole.

0:08:08 > 0:08:12So pull it apart with your fingers Have a look close to the roots.

0:08:12 > 0:08:14There's one!

0:08:14 > 0:08:18And another one! And another one!

0:08:18 > 0:08:21The Fanimals have finally picked out all the worms,

0:08:21 > 0:08:25so it's on to the next stage - weighing the worms.

0:08:25 > 0:08:27Put them in. There's a lot there.

0:08:27 > 0:08:30- 40 grams.- 40 grams! That's quite a lot.

0:08:30 > 0:08:3240 grams! That's not bad.

0:08:32 > 0:08:35Still got quite a few worms there from one metre.

0:08:35 > 0:08:37But hang on.

0:08:37 > 0:08:39They weighed a small section of worms.

0:08:39 > 0:08:43To get the weight of the total amount of worms in the field,

0:08:43 > 0:08:47the Fanimals need to apply the worm professor's formula. Here goes...

0:08:47 > 0:08:51OK. So if we've got 40 grams of worms from one metre squared

0:08:51 > 0:08:54and the field is 44,000 metres squared...

0:08:54 > 0:09:00So 40 grams multiplied by 44,000? That comes to...

0:09:00 > 0:09:04That makes 1,750 kilograms of worms.

0:09:04 > 0:09:07Thanks, worm professor. Now that's a fair old weight.

0:09:07 > 0:09:09In fact, that's more than an average car.

0:09:09 > 0:09:13So Wally now knows the total weight of all the worms in the field,

0:09:13 > 0:09:16but is his theory right?

0:09:16 > 0:09:18Who weighs more in the field... the cows or the worms?

0:09:18 > 0:09:21In this field there's 25 cows

0:09:21 > 0:09:24and they weigh 11,650 kilograms.

0:09:24 > 0:09:28So that means the cows are the winners!

0:09:28 > 0:09:30That's awful news, Wally.

0:09:30 > 0:09:33So the cows have won.

0:09:33 > 0:09:35So the cows have won, but just for today.

0:09:35 > 0:09:38Hold on. There's some consolation.

0:09:38 > 0:09:40So that's really because it's dry.

0:09:40 > 0:09:43If it had been a wet year, I'm sure there'd be more worms.

0:09:43 > 0:09:47So when it rains, there'll be more worms, and Wally's theory

0:09:47 > 0:09:48is more likely to be correct,

0:09:48 > 0:09:51which is good news indeed for our wiggly friend.

0:09:51 > 0:09:55Thanks, Fanimals, and well done, Wally.

0:09:55 > 0:09:57Keep ploughing, safe in the knowledge

0:09:57 > 0:09:59that you weigh more than the cows.

0:09:59 > 0:10:00As long as it's raining!

0:10:02 > 0:10:04And now it's back to Michigan, in America.

0:10:04 > 0:10:08Two-year-old Logan dreams of being a sniffer dog.

0:10:10 > 0:10:13He wants to help put a stop to water pollution

0:10:13 > 0:10:16by locating contaminated waterways.

0:10:18 > 0:10:21He's been training under the supervision of his mentor, Sable.

0:10:21 > 0:10:23But Logan's got a problem -

0:10:23 > 0:10:27sometimes his super-sniffer isn't so...super.

0:10:27 > 0:10:30Some days their sniffer is off.

0:10:30 > 0:10:32Maybe he could bypass something.

0:10:32 > 0:10:34And time is not on Logan's side.

0:10:35 > 0:10:37Tomorrow he's got his first job,

0:10:37 > 0:10:40where he'll have to find a pollution leak.

0:10:43 > 0:10:46Tomorrow really is a big day.

0:10:46 > 0:10:49Um, Logan is going to get his first opportunity to be actually

0:10:49 > 0:10:52out in the field and do a field trial.

0:10:52 > 0:10:54This is big, so to try

0:10:54 > 0:10:57and make sure Logan's ready for work,

0:10:57 > 0:11:00this afternoon, he'll do the final stage of his training.

0:11:00 > 0:11:05This is the contamination course.

0:11:05 > 0:11:08It might look like a sunny field with plastic things in it,

0:11:08 > 0:11:10but it's much, much more than that.

0:11:10 > 0:11:15It's here that a pollution sniffer's career is made.. or broken.

0:11:15 > 0:11:18The course is dotted with various types of water pipe,

0:11:18 > 0:11:21some of which contain yucky pollutants.

0:11:21 > 0:11:24This one right here is, uh, has human sewage in it.

0:11:24 > 0:11:27This one here is laundry detergent.

0:11:27 > 0:11:31The dogs should give us an alert there is something there.

0:11:31 > 0:11:35It's the trainee's job to identify which pipes are safe...

0:11:35 > 0:11:37This one is empty. There is nothing in it.

0:11:37 > 0:11:39..and which contain harmful stuff.

0:11:39 > 0:11:40Yes! Good boy!

0:11:40 > 0:11:45They're looking for detergents, wee and poo.

0:11:45 > 0:11:48And how's Logan going to find them? That's obvious.

0:11:48 > 0:11:49It's all in the nose.

0:11:49 > 0:11:52Dogs have one of the keenest senses of smell in nature.

0:11:52 > 0:11:55It's 1,000 times stronger than yours or mine.

0:11:55 > 0:11:59Scent is the way that dogs recognise the world, which is why

0:11:59 > 0:12:03amateur dogs do lots of sniffing in their leisure time.

0:12:03 > 0:12:06It's also why dogs are perfect for a pollutant-sniffing job

0:12:06 > 0:12:08if trained properly.

0:12:08 > 0:12:11But is Logan up to scratch? Well, we're soon going to find out.

0:12:11 > 0:12:14This is what Logan's up against - amongst all the pipes

0:12:14 > 0:12:17are three containing common pollutants -

0:12:24 > 0:12:28To complete the course successfully, Logan will need to ignore

0:12:28 > 0:12:33all the other pipes and pick out the ones containing the pollutants.

0:12:33 > 0:12:35He's been trained to sit to show

0:12:35 > 0:12:38that he thinks he's found something bad.

0:12:38 > 0:12:39Good boy!

0:12:39 > 0:12:43OK, students, this is your last chance before your big day

0:12:43 > 0:12:45to get it right, OK?

0:12:45 > 0:12:47So this is it. It's the big moment.

0:12:47 > 0:12:51Some words of luck from Sable, and he's off.

0:12:51 > 0:12:54Immediately he's faced with a line of decoy pipes

0:12:54 > 0:12:56leading up to the first smell.

0:12:56 > 0:12:58He's doing well so far.

0:12:58 > 0:13:00There are no pollutants in this section,

0:13:00 > 0:13:04and he's passing straight by without distraction.

0:13:04 > 0:13:08He's reached a manhole cover, but will he pick up a smell?

0:13:08 > 0:13:11He's stopped, and he's sat down... that's it!

0:13:11 > 0:13:15He's identified the first pollutant, the human poo.

0:13:15 > 0:13:18Sable knows there's no time for congratulations.

0:13:18 > 0:13:20It's off to find the next stinky pipe.

0:13:20 > 0:13:25Logan's headed straight over to the white pipe. Is he on to something?

0:13:25 > 0:13:28He clearly can't make up his mind.

0:13:29 > 0:13:31Sable looks on with his heart in his throat.

0:13:31 > 0:13:34This is not the time for Logan's nose to let him down.

0:13:34 > 0:13:37What's it to be? He's made a decision. He's sitting...

0:13:37 > 0:13:40but is he right?

0:13:40 > 0:13:42Yes, yes, that's good.

0:13:42 > 0:13:45Unbelievable stuff! He's done it.

0:13:45 > 0:13:46He's picked out the detergent!

0:13:46 > 0:13:48That's a big sigh of relief from Sable.

0:13:48 > 0:13:52Two down, one to go, and it's going to be a tricky one.

0:13:52 > 0:13:55But there's no stopping Logan now.

0:13:55 > 0:14:00He ignores a decoy pipe and it's straight over to the stinky one.

0:14:16 > 0:14:18He's got it! It's the human pee!

0:14:18 > 0:14:19Three out of three. Top marks.

0:14:19 > 0:14:21You guys did really well.

0:14:21 > 0:14:25Logan hit on all of the ones with pollution in them. A nice job.

0:14:25 > 0:14:29Not only has he passed the course, he's made it look oh, so easy.

0:14:29 > 0:14:33And that suspect sniffer? Well, it didn't let him down once.

0:14:33 > 0:14:34Sable couldn't be prouder.

0:14:34 > 0:14:37Our hero gets a wash to make sure that he's clean

0:14:37 > 0:14:39from all pollutants he's had contact with.

0:14:39 > 0:14:42If they got any pollution on them, we wash it off

0:14:42 > 0:14:44so that it doesn't make them sick.

0:14:44 > 0:14:47Then Logan's mind turns to the real test.

0:14:47 > 0:14:49Tomorrow, he will learn

0:14:49 > 0:14:52whether he's cut out for his dream job.

0:14:52 > 0:14:56Later... it's Logan's first day at work.

0:14:56 > 0:15:00Will his sniffer be up to the challenge of a real call-out?

0:15:11 > 0:15:14Oh, hey there. I'm just waiting to get some make-up applied

0:15:14 > 0:15:17because even good-looking presenters like myself

0:15:17 > 0:15:19need a bit of make-up.

0:15:22 > 0:15:23Very funny.

0:15:23 > 0:15:26Anyway, here I go.

0:15:26 > 0:15:31I just sit back, close my eyes. Make-up artist, I'm ready.

0:15:40 > 0:15:43OK guys, I'm ready.

0:15:45 > 0:15:48What? Give me that mirror.

0:15:50 > 0:15:51What?

0:15:51 > 0:15:55What is going on here? "Hope you like the make-up.

0:15:55 > 0:15:58"Love, Cheeky Monkey"?

0:15:58 > 0:16:02I hate that cheeky monkey!

0:16:04 > 0:16:07And now we're off to Shipley in England.

0:16:15 > 0:16:19Within this quiet town, on this unassuming street,

0:16:19 > 0:16:21behind this one eye

0:16:21 > 0:16:23and within this furry coat,

0:16:23 > 0:16:25beats the heart of a champion.

0:16:25 > 0:16:27Meet Midge...

0:16:27 > 0:16:29the racing cat.

0:16:34 > 0:16:36Midge is a 13-year-old moggy

0:16:36 > 0:16:39who has one eye and a need for speed.

0:16:41 > 0:16:46And this is Martin, her trainer, agent and number one fan.

0:16:46 > 0:16:49I think she's got the spirit, you know, of competing

0:16:49 > 0:16:50like an athlete does.

0:16:50 > 0:16:54Midge's street races against Martin have earned her fame.

0:16:54 > 0:16:58She's appeared on TV, in the news, even in a movie.

0:16:58 > 0:17:01And Midge's career has reached a crucial point.

0:17:01 > 0:17:05She's looking to take her racing to the next level.

0:17:05 > 0:17:08Today, Midge will compete in the biggest race of her life

0:17:08 > 0:17:11against a top human athlete.

0:17:16 > 0:17:20But before that, it's a warm-up race with Martin.

0:17:20 > 0:17:23We're getting ready for a race between myself

0:17:23 > 0:17:25and Midge and it will be tremendous.

0:17:25 > 0:17:28It's man against cat. You don't often see this.

0:17:28 > 0:17:32As part of Midge's training routine they race here, in the street,

0:17:32 > 0:17:34almost every day.

0:17:34 > 0:17:36This is where we'll start from.

0:17:36 > 0:17:38This is our usual starting line

0:17:38 > 0:17:43and once I put Midge down, I can tell you, the race is on.

0:17:45 > 0:17:49See if she'll go for it. All right, let's go!

0:17:49 > 0:17:53Uh-oh! Looks like Midge is off her game.

0:17:53 > 0:17:55Clearly distracted by the thought

0:17:55 > 0:17:58of taking on a real competitor.

0:17:58 > 0:18:01Sorry, Martin, but it's true. She deserves more.

0:18:01 > 0:18:06Finally, Martin has Midge in the zone. Here we go.

0:18:06 > 0:18:09Go on. Come on!

0:18:09 > 0:18:11Come on.

0:18:11 > 0:18:14Wow! That is insane! Midge is one speedy cat.

0:18:14 > 0:18:16She completely left Martin in the dust.

0:18:16 > 0:18:20She's in top form at the moment. I can't get near to her.

0:18:20 > 0:18:24Having proved that her eye IS on the prize, it's time to give Midge

0:18:24 > 0:18:28what she wants by putting a real competitor by her side.

0:18:28 > 0:18:32She's about to face the biggest challenge of her racing career,

0:18:32 > 0:18:35and that challenge comes in this very athletic package.

0:18:36 > 0:18:38I'm the fastest under-15

0:18:38 > 0:18:42at sports hall athletics two lap in the UK.

0:18:42 > 0:18:46I can do the hundred metres in 11.3 seconds.

0:18:46 > 0:18:47That's fast!

0:18:47 > 0:18:51Looks like Midge finally has some serious competition.

0:18:51 > 0:18:54And as if things couldn't be more thrilling, guess what?

0:18:54 > 0:18:58Today's race will be taking place on a real running track.

0:18:58 > 0:19:00Midge needs to stay in the zone.

0:19:00 > 0:19:03There can't be any shenanigans like when she races Martin.

0:19:09 > 0:19:12Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls.

0:19:12 > 0:19:15Record holder Matt will be racing on the outside lane

0:19:15 > 0:19:17while Midge - meow - will take the inside.

0:19:26 > 0:19:28Matt's off like lightning.

0:19:28 > 0:19:31Midge wanders out of her starting box.

0:19:31 > 0:19:34Matt storms down the straight.

0:19:36 > 0:19:39Midge has a little look around.

0:19:39 > 0:19:42Matt's crossed the line... a great performance.

0:19:42 > 0:19:47Midge is going sideways. This is a catastrophe!

0:19:47 > 0:19:50Nice run, Matt, but the big event got to Midge

0:19:50 > 0:19:53and, well, she bottled it.

0:19:53 > 0:19:55She didn't sprint the whole 100 metres

0:19:55 > 0:19:57but there are other times.

0:19:57 > 0:19:59Oh, well.

0:19:59 > 0:20:03Some day Midge just might be the first cat to win Olympic gold or...

0:20:03 > 0:20:05just finish the race.

0:20:05 > 0:20:10But until then, she still has her dreams and her races with Martin.

0:20:16 > 0:20:19It's not just today that animals have had jobs.

0:20:19 > 0:20:21History reveals that in the past,

0:20:21 > 0:20:24they've had even more amazing jobs than today.

0:20:24 > 0:20:28And here are those History's Heroes.

0:20:28 > 0:20:31Hello. Bumbleman here, Professor John Bumbleman,

0:20:31 > 0:20:35world-famous animal historian and part-time inventor. Oh, yes.

0:20:35 > 0:20:38I'm an inventor and I've had a new idea.

0:20:38 > 0:20:44Eureka! It's a light bulb that turns on when you say "eureka".

0:20:44 > 0:20:45Brilliant.

0:20:45 > 0:20:47Now for some animals who have invented

0:20:47 > 0:20:49some pretty clever things too.

0:20:49 > 0:20:54Electric lights, phones, even electric cars...

0:20:54 > 0:20:57modern society is more than a little reliant on electricity.

0:20:57 > 0:21:01And it's an American with a bad haircut who gets all the praise.

0:21:01 > 0:21:05Benjamin Franklin is considered the master of electricity

0:21:05 > 0:21:08after discovering it by conducting experiments.

0:21:08 > 0:21:11But one customer discovered electricity

0:21:11 > 0:21:13long before any scientist was on the scene.

0:21:13 > 0:21:17Meet our first animal inventor, the electric eel...

0:21:17 > 0:21:20a freshwater fish from South America

0:21:20 > 0:21:23which can produce an electric shock of 500 volts!

0:21:25 > 0:21:29That must have been a bit of a shocker for Mr Franklin.

0:21:29 > 0:21:33Our next animal invented paper!

0:21:33 > 0:21:37Almost 6,000 years ago, Ancient Egyptian scientists

0:21:37 > 0:21:42and their mummies started using papyrus as the first ever notebooks.

0:21:42 > 0:21:45They made their paper out of reeds and used it to write records,

0:21:45 > 0:21:48which were stored as scrolls.

0:21:48 > 0:21:51But the animal world had once again trumped humans,

0:21:51 > 0:21:54as the true inventor of paper is... the wasp.

0:21:54 > 0:21:58Yes, since way back, this black and yellow fellow has been

0:21:58 > 0:22:02creating paper out of the dead wood and saliva it uses

0:22:02 > 0:22:04to build its nests.

0:22:04 > 0:22:07And can they create some paper!

0:22:07 > 0:22:10The largest ever wasp nest was found in New Zealand in 1963

0:22:10 > 0:22:14and was a whopping three-and-a-half metres long.

0:22:14 > 0:22:17Maybe the wasps were trying to write a novel!

0:22:19 > 0:22:20Oh, you reeka.

0:22:20 > 0:22:22PING! Oh!

0:22:22 > 0:22:24In 1879, the world went crazy

0:22:24 > 0:22:28when Thomas Edison invented the light bulb.

0:22:28 > 0:22:31Everyone spent lots of time congratulating Mr Edison,

0:22:31 > 0:22:33ooh-ing and ah-ing at the wonder

0:22:33 > 0:22:36of not having to light gas lamps in their living rooms any more.

0:22:36 > 0:22:40But Franklin wasn't the first to discover electricity.

0:22:40 > 0:22:45It was invented even before 1879 and the real inventor was...

0:22:45 > 0:22:49a glow worm, who invented a very efficient light bulb in its stomach

0:22:49 > 0:22:52over 30 million years ago.

0:22:52 > 0:22:54What's more, glow worms' lights

0:22:54 > 0:22:58are also actually far more efficient than any of ours.

0:22:58 > 0:23:02Typical light bulbs waste over 95 per cent of their energy as heat,

0:23:02 > 0:23:04a glow worm produces cold light,

0:23:04 > 0:23:06almost without wasting any energy at all.

0:23:06 > 0:23:09Well done, Mr Glow worm!

0:23:09 > 0:23:12So that's it for animal adventures through time.

0:23:12 > 0:23:13Now, if you'll excuse me,

0:23:13 > 0:23:18I'm going to invent something to make my socks smell better.

0:23:19 > 0:23:22Finally, it's back to Michigan in the USA.

0:23:23 > 0:23:27Earlier on, Logan successfully completed

0:23:27 > 0:23:30the dreaded contamination assault course.

0:23:30 > 0:23:32You guys did really well.

0:23:32 > 0:23:34This is the last session before your big day.

0:23:34 > 0:23:37And took one step closer to his dream job,

0:23:37 > 0:23:40working alongside his boss Sable as a sniffer dog.

0:23:41 > 0:23:44And now Logan faces the biggest day of his life.

0:23:44 > 0:23:50City officials suspect that unwanted sewage is leaking into a water pipe.

0:23:50 > 0:23:53If their fears are correct, then Logan's town is facing

0:23:53 > 0:23:55a potentially serious health risk.

0:23:56 > 0:23:58Logan's bosses, Sable and Scott,

0:23:58 > 0:24:02have decided that this is going to be Logan's first call-out.

0:24:02 > 0:24:03And the pressure's really on.

0:24:03 > 0:24:07As Logan will be working in front of important clients, it's vital

0:24:07 > 0:24:11that his sniffer is on the ball and up to finding any pollution.

0:24:11 > 0:24:13There's lots of pressure

0:24:13 > 0:24:15because there's a lot of new people here

0:24:15 > 0:24:17and we want to see if he does a good job.

0:24:17 > 0:24:21Wow, this is big. Can Logan's training and desire get him through?

0:24:23 > 0:24:25We're about to find out.

0:24:25 > 0:24:26As Sable looks on,

0:24:26 > 0:24:28Logan leads the way through the fields

0:24:28 > 0:24:31towards the potentially contaminated site.

0:24:31 > 0:24:33He's clearly feeling confident today.

0:24:33 > 0:24:35Logan's very excited.

0:24:35 > 0:24:38We've got a few pipes that are coming up here in the distance

0:24:38 > 0:24:41that he is going to be checking.

0:24:45 > 0:24:47They finally reach the pipes.

0:24:47 > 0:24:51Remember, this is a real call-out.

0:24:51 > 0:24:55No-one knows whether the water in the pipes contains pollution.

0:24:55 > 0:24:57This is Logan's big moment.

0:24:57 > 0:25:00He'll tell us by sitting with the sit alert

0:25:00 > 0:25:04if there's any stuff in the pipe. Logan, this is a big test for you.

0:25:04 > 0:25:07No-one could be any more nervous than Sable,

0:25:07 > 0:25:10who wants to watch his young apprentice pull it off.

0:25:10 > 0:25:12Logan takes a sniff.

0:25:12 > 0:25:15He gives it some thought and he sits down.

0:25:15 > 0:25:19- Is that it?- That means he thinks the pipe contains pollution.

0:25:19 > 0:25:22- OK. I believe ya. - But is he right?

0:25:22 > 0:25:24In goes the old pro to find out.

0:25:27 > 0:25:30Everyone awaits confirmation with bated breath.

0:25:32 > 0:25:35And would you believe it? Sable says yes!

0:25:35 > 0:25:39Logan's got it right. The pipe is polluted.

0:25:39 > 0:25:41The pipe can be investigated

0:25:41 > 0:25:44and fixed so the pollution is removed and no-one gets ill.

0:25:44 > 0:25:47Looks like we've got a couple of positive hits

0:25:47 > 0:25:50so we'll turn that over to our contact here.

0:25:50 > 0:25:53All thanks to Logan, who's proved he has exactly what it takes.

0:25:53 > 0:25:57In fact, the new clients are so impressed they whiz Logan over

0:25:57 > 0:26:01to the other side of town to get his opinion on another suspect pipe.

0:26:01 > 0:26:05If Logan does well on this, I think Sable's going to be very excited.

0:26:05 > 0:26:09This one's trickier because the pipe's at the bottom of a manhole.

0:26:09 > 0:26:12This means the water's further away,

0:26:12 > 0:26:14so some extra special sniffing is required.

0:26:14 > 0:26:16This is an open manhole.

0:26:16 > 0:26:18Make sure they've got sure footing

0:26:18 > 0:26:20and the dogs don't step over the edge.

0:26:20 > 0:26:22But nothing's holding Logan back.

0:26:26 > 0:26:29He takes a sniff...

0:26:29 > 0:26:31and he sits.

0:26:31 > 0:26:34Remember, this means his nose is telling him

0:26:34 > 0:26:36there's unwanted pollution about.

0:26:36 > 0:26:41Again, just to be sure, Sable double-checks Logan's work...

0:26:48 > 0:26:50and confirms that he's right.

0:26:50 > 0:26:53- Good boy. Good boy. - Great work, Logan. Two out of two.

0:26:53 > 0:26:55Everyone's really impressed.

0:26:55 > 0:26:59OK, everybody. That was fantastic. Logan, excellent job.

0:26:59 > 0:27:01They're not the only ones over the moon.

0:27:01 > 0:27:05Sable couldn't be any happier All that training he's supervised

0:27:05 > 0:27:07has finally paid off.

0:27:07 > 0:27:09We got something in this manhole.

0:27:09 > 0:27:10A real valuable tool.

0:27:10 > 0:27:13I think probably we'll be using them again in the future.

0:27:13 > 0:27:15For Logan it's a dream come true.

0:27:15 > 0:27:19- He's finally made it as a sniffer dog.- Let's go.

0:27:21 > 0:27:23Congratulations, Logan.

0:27:23 > 0:27:26Now you can enjoy the sweet smell of success.

0:27:26 > 0:27:27He's getting a raise.

0:27:30 > 0:27:34Hey, Jack, that looks like one smelly and messy job.

0:27:34 > 0:27:37Do you want a position in that company?

0:27:37 > 0:27:39No? I don't blame you.
