0:00:02 > 0:00:05I'm Ricky. I live in Bristol.

0:00:05 > 0:00:08By day, I work as an animator, which is lucky,

0:00:08 > 0:00:10cos I love art.

0:00:10 > 0:00:11I live for art.

0:00:11 > 0:00:13I even dream of art.

0:00:13 > 0:00:14I draw...

0:00:15 > 0:00:16..I paint...

0:00:18 > 0:00:19..I make things.

0:00:20 > 0:00:25I hang out with my mates, Gavin, Michelle and Sarah.

0:00:25 > 0:00:26Argh...!

0:00:26 > 0:00:28Most importantly, I make ninja moves.

0:00:28 > 0:00:30Some people call me the...

0:00:31 > 0:00:33..Art Ninja!

0:00:34 > 0:00:38Today, I'll show you how to make a nose-shaped tissue dispenser

0:00:38 > 0:00:40that'll blow your socks off.

0:00:40 > 0:00:43My dad helps me with an eye-popping drawing,

0:00:43 > 0:00:47plus it all gets a bit spooky when I do some underground art.

0:00:48 > 0:00:50Because today, it's...

0:00:54 > 0:00:56ALARM BEEPS

0:00:59 > 0:01:01Achoo!

0:01:01 > 0:01:02It's a new day.

0:01:02 > 0:01:04Time to get my ninja on.

0:01:06 > 0:01:07And my clothes.

0:01:30 > 0:01:33But today, I might need to pull a sickie.

0:01:33 > 0:01:34I feel so sketchy.

0:01:34 > 0:01:36Achoo!

0:01:36 > 0:01:37Oh, but I can't be ill.

0:01:37 > 0:01:39I've got to meet my friend Michael later

0:01:39 > 0:01:42to do some fluorescent art with lights.

0:01:42 > 0:01:44PHONE RINGS

0:01:46 > 0:01:47'Hi, it's Mum!

0:01:47 > 0:01:49'Hope you're OK. You're often sick at this time of year.'

0:01:49 > 0:01:51She's not wrong.

0:01:51 > 0:01:53And by sick, she doesn't mean good.

0:01:53 > 0:01:56Mum's cool, but she's not that cool.

0:01:56 > 0:01:58- Hi, Ricky!- Hi, Dad.

0:01:58 > 0:02:02- Mum's really worried about you. - I know. She's still on the phone.

0:02:02 > 0:02:04RICKY'S MUM BABBLES ON THE PHONE

0:02:05 > 0:02:07She sent me round with a hot-water bottle.

0:02:07 > 0:02:09And I've got some tissues for you as well.

0:02:09 > 0:02:12Whoa, keep your distance! I don't want you to catch my cold.

0:02:12 > 0:02:14- Can you throw me a tissue?- Sure.

0:02:14 > 0:02:17- Oh, can't open them! Can you help me, please?- Yeah, sure.

0:02:17 > 0:02:19Achoo!

0:02:23 > 0:02:24Achoo!

0:02:26 > 0:02:29You're going to have to stay in quarantine now.

0:02:32 > 0:02:34Well, you might as well put the kettle on.

0:02:37 > 0:02:39Blowing your nose...

0:02:40 > 0:02:44SNOT fun, is it? And I've got some art that can help you with that.

0:02:45 > 0:02:48The Art Ninja nose-shaped tissue dispenser!

0:02:48 > 0:02:50It's great and I'm SNOT kidding!

0:02:51 > 0:02:53I've got a big piece of cardboard

0:02:53 > 0:02:55and I'm going to draw around a tissue box.

0:02:58 > 0:03:02I'm going to roll it up onto its end towards me.

0:03:02 > 0:03:05Now, I'm going to draw around the edges of three sides.

0:03:07 > 0:03:09And then, on the edges here,

0:03:09 > 0:03:13I'm going to draw the profile of a nose, nice and big.

0:03:18 > 0:03:21It's important to make these match. So, once you've cut it out,

0:03:21 > 0:03:23you can fold it in half and make sure they're symmetrical.

0:03:23 > 0:03:26Then, I'm going to draw around my box here

0:03:26 > 0:03:27and make a strip of card

0:03:27 > 0:03:30one-and-a-half times the length of the tissue box.

0:03:30 > 0:03:32There! Looks about half again.

0:03:33 > 0:03:35Now I'm going to cut them out.

0:03:37 > 0:03:38Snippy-snippy...

0:03:39 > 0:03:41Now you need to score along these lines

0:03:41 > 0:03:42and I'm going to use a ruler for that.

0:03:42 > 0:03:44It's a bit safer than using scissors.

0:03:44 > 0:03:48I'm scoring so I can fold these parts of cardboard back more easily.

0:03:48 > 0:03:49Turn it over.

0:03:49 > 0:03:51Just see if the tissue box fits inside.

0:03:53 > 0:03:54There we go, perfect!

0:03:54 > 0:03:58It needs to have a little bit of wiggle room so you can take it out.

0:03:59 > 0:04:02Now, this strip is going to be the bridge of the nose

0:04:02 > 0:04:04and the underside here.

0:04:04 > 0:04:05And what have you got here?

0:04:05 > 0:04:06Nostrils.

0:04:06 > 0:04:09So, we need to cut some holes in this strip, just a couple of ovals.

0:04:13 > 0:04:16And if you've got square nostrils, by all means, draw square ones.

0:04:18 > 0:04:19Or even triangular.

0:04:19 > 0:04:22Now I'm going to put a bit of clay behind them.

0:04:22 > 0:04:24Use a pencil to make a hole, so I can get my scissors in there.

0:04:28 > 0:04:30Now I can start taping it together.

0:04:35 > 0:04:39That's just going to hold it together while we put the bridge on.

0:04:45 > 0:04:47OK, it's shaping up pretty well.

0:04:47 > 0:04:50Now I'm going to stick some balls of newspaper on either side,

0:04:50 > 0:04:52so it looks more like a nose.

0:04:53 > 0:04:54There we go...

0:04:59 > 0:05:00Right.

0:05:00 > 0:05:03I'm going to cover it in a couple of layers of paper-mache,

0:05:03 > 0:05:06so I've got a bowl of PVA glue and water mix,

0:05:06 > 0:05:08two parts glue, one part water

0:05:08 > 0:05:10and a nice pile of newspaper.

0:05:19 > 0:05:21Paper-macheing, quite messy.

0:05:21 > 0:05:23So, you should put some extra newspaper down first.

0:05:30 > 0:05:32OK, good. Looking nice and covered.

0:05:32 > 0:05:34Now, if you're doing this at home,

0:05:34 > 0:05:35you'll need to wait for it to dry.

0:05:35 > 0:05:37But I'm going to use my ninja skills.

0:05:39 > 0:05:42Great, paper-mache's dry, nice and hard.

0:05:42 > 0:05:46Now I'm going to do my nose, so I have the right colour paint here.

0:05:46 > 0:05:48Mix up some colours to get the skin tone right for you.

0:06:03 > 0:06:05Great, that's all covered.

0:06:05 > 0:06:07Now you'll need to wait for yours to dry.

0:06:07 > 0:06:10But I wait for nothing, I'm the Art Ninja!

0:06:11 > 0:06:12Oh, look at that!

0:06:12 > 0:06:15Took so long to dry, it's grown a moustache.

0:06:15 > 0:06:17I've also added some detail here,

0:06:17 > 0:06:18just to accentuate the nostrils.

0:06:18 > 0:06:21And I've pierced the hole in the back

0:06:21 > 0:06:23and put a bit of string to hang it up.

0:06:23 > 0:06:25Now let's slide in our tissues...

0:06:26 > 0:06:28SNEEZY does it.

0:06:29 > 0:06:30Oh, yeah!

0:06:35 > 0:06:36SNOT bad, that.

0:06:36 > 0:06:38Ha-ha! Said "snot" again.

0:06:38 > 0:06:39Achoo!

0:06:50 > 0:06:52The nose-shaped tissue dispenser.

0:06:52 > 0:06:54Have a blow at it today. I mean, go.

0:07:00 > 0:07:01Achoo!

0:07:02 > 0:07:05- Dad, you put the kettle on yet? - No, I'm disinfecting.

0:07:05 > 0:07:08- I hope you're wearing gloves, that's some strong stuff.- Of course.

0:07:08 > 0:07:11I've got your lilac gloves with floral cuffs.

0:07:11 > 0:07:15They're not mine. Someone must have left them here.

0:07:20 > 0:07:22I'm pretty sure that picture moves on its own.

0:07:22 > 0:07:25It's almost as if...it's animated.

0:07:25 > 0:07:28Oh, no...! Should I call an ambulance?

0:07:28 > 0:07:31No, it's just an animation. A crumby one!

0:07:31 > 0:07:33And you can make an awesome dunk stunt

0:07:33 > 0:07:37with a pack of yummy biscuits, a cup of tea, some bendy wire,

0:07:37 > 0:07:39some strong sticky tape and a camera.

0:07:39 > 0:07:43And you can put it together in just three ninja moves.

0:07:43 > 0:07:44Ninja move number one...

0:07:44 > 0:07:46You need to set up your scene.

0:07:46 > 0:07:49Now, I'm using this coffee table as my backdrop.

0:07:49 > 0:07:51I've got myself a cold cup of tea here, ready to go.

0:07:51 > 0:07:53And now I can start doing my animation.

0:07:53 > 0:07:54So, I need to take a shot each time

0:07:54 > 0:07:56my biscuit climbs up to the top

0:07:56 > 0:07:59to jump off and do its death-defying stunt.

0:07:59 > 0:08:01I need to make sure that these biscuits here

0:08:01 > 0:08:03react when he's getting ready to jump,

0:08:03 > 0:08:05because there's quite a lot of suspense in this.

0:08:07 > 0:08:10So, every time I move the pink biscuit a tiny amount,

0:08:10 > 0:08:13I take a photo and then, when I edit all the photos together,

0:08:13 > 0:08:15it'll make it seem like they've moved.

0:08:15 > 0:08:19Obviously, I have to eat a few wafers as I go. It's only fair!

0:08:20 > 0:08:22Ninja move number two...

0:08:22 > 0:08:24It's time for the death-defying stunt,

0:08:24 > 0:08:26so I need to attach some wire to the back of my biscuit.

0:08:26 > 0:08:30And I'm using some sticky tack, along with some strong black tape.

0:08:30 > 0:08:32And then, I need to attach the other part of the wire

0:08:32 > 0:08:34to this tin up here.

0:08:34 > 0:08:37And I'm going to conceal where it's actually attaching to it.

0:08:37 > 0:08:38Get him into position.

0:08:38 > 0:08:40And then I'm going to move the camera

0:08:40 > 0:08:43so I can hide where it's attached to the back of the biscuit.

0:08:43 > 0:08:45There we go, sneaky-sneaky.

0:08:45 > 0:08:47Now, I've hidden where it attaches to it.

0:08:47 > 0:08:48It means it's easier to paint it out.

0:08:48 > 0:08:50So, take a couple of shots.

0:08:50 > 0:08:51Now I'm going to take this out of the way

0:08:51 > 0:08:53and I'm going to shoot a clean picture

0:08:53 > 0:08:55without the biscuit or the wire in it.

0:08:55 > 0:08:56And this is known as a plate.

0:08:56 > 0:08:59It means that I can paint out the wire afterwards

0:08:59 > 0:09:02and make it look like the biscuit's really doing a stunt.

0:09:02 > 0:09:04It's always good to get a mate to help out.

0:09:04 > 0:09:06This is my mate, Rich.

0:09:08 > 0:09:10Ninja move number three...

0:09:10 > 0:09:13Compile your frames in an animation app.

0:09:13 > 0:09:16There's loads of free editing apps, like the one I'm using,

0:09:16 > 0:09:18available online for your PC or tablet.

0:09:19 > 0:09:23Now, I've painted out all the wire, I've added some sound effects,

0:09:23 > 0:09:25and I think it's time to take a look at the finished piece.

0:09:25 > 0:09:27CRUMB roll, please...

0:09:31 > 0:09:32Oh?

0:09:32 > 0:09:34Ah-ha...!

0:09:34 > 0:09:36Oh?

0:09:36 > 0:09:37Ah...!

0:09:37 > 0:09:38Urgh!

0:09:38 > 0:09:39DRUM ROLL

0:09:39 > 0:09:42Yippee...!

0:09:42 > 0:09:43Urgh!

0:09:43 > 0:09:44Oh...

0:09:46 > 0:09:48Argh!

0:09:48 > 0:09:49MUNCHING

0:09:50 > 0:09:52Argh...!

0:09:52 > 0:09:53Oh, yeah.

0:09:53 > 0:09:56It looks well good. Looks just like he's doing a stunt dive.

0:09:56 > 0:09:59I think it looks so good, I'm going to make another one.

0:10:00 > 0:10:02Oh...!

0:10:02 > 0:10:03They're all gone.

0:10:06 > 0:10:08PHONE RINGS

0:10:12 > 0:10:14'Hi, Ricky! It's Mum!'

0:10:14 > 0:10:16It's your mum!

0:10:16 > 0:10:19- I know. - 'Your dad must still be there.

0:10:19 > 0:10:20'I hope he's not caught your cold.

0:10:20 > 0:10:22'Ah-ah-achoo!

0:10:22 > 0:10:24'Oh, seems like I've caught it, too.'

0:10:24 > 0:10:28Wow. That fibre-optic phone line really is powerful.

0:10:28 > 0:10:30'Anyway, if your dad is there,

0:10:30 > 0:10:32'you can tell him that all this is still to come....

0:10:32 > 0:10:34'Optical illusions may lead to confusion

0:10:34 > 0:10:36'when you add to your body of work,

0:10:36 > 0:10:38'you book in some painting with a library card

0:10:38 > 0:10:42'and make some truly underground art that is a real highlight.

0:10:42 > 0:10:45'Ricky, get well soon and send Dad home soon.

0:10:45 > 0:10:49'Please, don't involve him in your Art Ninja nonsense. Bye!'

0:10:49 > 0:10:50Of course not, Mum.

0:10:50 > 0:10:53- Hey, Dad, can you help me with something?- Yeah, love to.

0:10:53 > 0:10:56I've got a germ of an idea.

0:10:56 > 0:10:57- Achoo!- Urgh!

0:10:57 > 0:10:59Sorry. I'm going to need some felt-tip pens for this.

0:10:59 > 0:11:02Let's just check if these ones are all working.

0:11:02 > 0:11:03Draw a line there.

0:11:04 > 0:11:06That's nice. Nice orange one.

0:11:08 > 0:11:10Yeah, going all right.

0:11:10 > 0:11:12Yeah, going strongly. Great.

0:11:12 > 0:11:14Dad, can you draw around me with this pencil?

0:11:14 > 0:11:15I'd love to.

0:11:15 > 0:11:17On this massive piece of paper?

0:11:17 > 0:11:18- Yeah, go on, then.- Cool.

0:11:18 > 0:11:20If you can take the end of that...

0:11:23 > 0:11:25Right, going to lay down.

0:11:26 > 0:11:27Start drawing around me, then.

0:11:30 > 0:11:32This is the kind of art I like.

0:11:32 > 0:11:35I'm feeling a bit poorly today, so it's good to lay down.

0:11:36 > 0:11:37That tickles!

0:11:37 > 0:11:38Tickles!

0:11:39 > 0:11:40Nearly there.

0:11:42 > 0:11:43This is weird. This is weird.

0:11:45 > 0:11:46Weird.

0:11:47 > 0:11:48- All done.- Great.

0:11:49 > 0:11:50Oh, yeah.

0:11:50 > 0:11:53You can't see it properly yet, but now...

0:11:53 > 0:11:57I want to do some freaky art, inspired by artist Bridget Riley.

0:11:57 > 0:12:00She was famous for pictures like this. It's called op art.

0:12:00 > 0:12:02Op for optical illusion.

0:12:02 > 0:12:04I hope you're not copying me, Ricky!

0:12:04 > 0:12:07In the '60s, people copied me in both art and fashion

0:12:07 > 0:12:09and I got very angry.

0:12:09 > 0:12:12It's all right, Bridget. Imitation is the highest form of flattery.

0:12:14 > 0:12:16So, I'm drawing a nice line across here.

0:12:18 > 0:12:19Why are you doing this?

0:12:19 > 0:12:23I want to turn this 2D image of me into a 3D piece of op art.

0:12:23 > 0:12:26So, at the moment, drawing lines across,

0:12:26 > 0:12:28keeping them pretty much parallel to each other.

0:12:28 > 0:12:30And then, when I hit one of the lines here from our drawing,

0:12:30 > 0:12:32I'm going to raise it up,

0:12:32 > 0:12:34to try and make it look like it's raised up off the paper.

0:12:34 > 0:12:36I see what you're doing now.

0:12:37 > 0:12:39Now I... Pay close attention, Dad!

0:12:39 > 0:12:42- Cos in a minute, you're going to have to help me.- OK.

0:12:43 > 0:12:45I've hit the pencil line, so I can do a bump.

0:12:45 > 0:12:47Tell me when I can start, then.

0:12:47 > 0:12:49Be patient, I'm nearly there.

0:12:51 > 0:12:54We're trying to get it on, so we can both do it at the same time.

0:12:57 > 0:13:00In Bridget Riley's abstract work,

0:13:00 > 0:13:02she liked to use strips of high-contrasting colour.

0:13:02 > 0:13:05- So, why don't you get started on the next one?- OK.

0:13:05 > 0:13:07Now, we're going to put two new lines in between here.

0:13:07 > 0:13:09So, when you draw your red line,

0:13:09 > 0:13:11- make sure you leave room for the last colour.- OK.

0:13:11 > 0:13:13And do straight along.

0:13:13 > 0:13:15- Try and keep it as parallel to my lines as possible.- Yes.

0:13:15 > 0:13:18And then, when you hit the line you drew around me,

0:13:18 > 0:13:20just raise it up, like this

0:13:20 > 0:13:21and make it look like it's 3D.

0:13:21 > 0:13:23- OK.- Don't let me down.

0:13:23 > 0:13:24I wouldn't dare.

0:13:26 > 0:13:29Lots of people say that Bridget Riley's work

0:13:29 > 0:13:30made them feel a little bit sick.

0:13:30 > 0:13:32But, seeing as I'm already feeling poorly,

0:13:32 > 0:13:34I think it's fine if I'm doing it.

0:13:36 > 0:13:40Right, I might start doing the red from down here, too.

0:13:40 > 0:13:42- I'll meet you in the middle. - OK, sounds good to me.

0:13:49 > 0:13:51If you were going to have a go at this at home,

0:13:51 > 0:13:53I'd recommend starting with something small.

0:13:53 > 0:13:56But, if you've got friends and family around to help you out,

0:13:56 > 0:13:57go big.

0:13:57 > 0:14:01Your outline drawing makes you look like a fine figure of a man.

0:14:01 > 0:14:04All right, Bridget. Making me blush!

0:14:04 > 0:14:06Oh, no, just running a fever...

0:14:08 > 0:14:11And now, let's run the footage more quickly.

0:14:12 > 0:14:14Is it making you feel a bit weird?

0:14:14 > 0:14:16It's making my eyes go a bit funny.

0:14:19 > 0:14:22Yeah...! Nice.

0:14:23 > 0:14:26- Do you mind holding it up for me? - Yeah, sure.

0:14:27 > 0:14:29Oh, wow! That looks amazing!

0:14:30 > 0:14:31- Yeah!- Oooh...!

0:14:38 > 0:14:39An optical illusion picture!

0:14:39 > 0:14:40Try one yourself.

0:14:40 > 0:14:42It's Bridget-Riley-good!

0:14:49 > 0:14:51Oh, we're feeling a little better.

0:14:51 > 0:14:53- Nearly ready to face the world. - Ricky!

0:14:53 > 0:14:55Ricky! Ricky!

0:14:55 > 0:14:57I said nearly ready.

0:14:57 > 0:14:58What do you guys want?

0:14:58 > 0:15:01What can you make with shaving foam?

0:15:01 > 0:15:04Shaving foam? I think I'll SHAVE that for another day.

0:15:04 > 0:15:05Oh...!

0:15:05 > 0:15:09Ricky, what can you make with a feather duster?

0:15:09 > 0:15:12A feather duster? Although that TICKLES me, not right now.

0:15:12 > 0:15:14Oh...!

0:15:14 > 0:15:17Ricky, what can you make with these?

0:15:17 > 0:15:18I pick you.

0:15:18 > 0:15:21Yay...!

0:15:21 > 0:15:23So, what are your names?

0:15:23 > 0:15:24Hi, I'm Amelia.

0:15:24 > 0:15:26- I'm Tamia.- And I'm Jaya.

0:15:26 > 0:15:28And where are you guys from?

0:15:28 > 0:15:29We're from Manchester.

0:15:29 > 0:15:30Awesome!

0:15:30 > 0:15:33I love Manchester. So, what have you guys got for me today?

0:15:33 > 0:15:37Can you make something out of old library cards?

0:15:37 > 0:15:39Library cards?

0:15:39 > 0:15:42I've got an idea that will get you guys shouting.

0:15:42 > 0:15:44Not in a library, though. You've got to be quiet there.

0:15:44 > 0:15:46Let me just grab my stuff...

0:15:47 > 0:15:48I'm back.

0:15:48 > 0:15:52I've got some paper, some paint, got a tissue.

0:15:52 > 0:15:53I need that for cleaning up.

0:15:53 > 0:15:55And my old library card.

0:15:55 > 0:15:58I'm going to use my library card to make a cityscape,

0:15:58 > 0:16:00by scraping paint along the paper.

0:16:02 > 0:16:04Need quite a lot of it on there.

0:16:05 > 0:16:07What's your favourite city?

0:16:07 > 0:16:09Manchester!

0:16:09 > 0:16:10Obviously.

0:16:10 > 0:16:12Have thin and thick buildings.

0:16:13 > 0:16:17So, I'm just scraping the paint along, using the edge of the card.

0:16:17 > 0:16:20Obviously, when you do it, you can do any skyline you want.

0:16:20 > 0:16:23I'm just going to keep topping up paint on the card

0:16:23 > 0:16:26and turning it round to make sure I spread out the paint equally.

0:16:26 > 0:16:30OK, I've got the silhouette of my cityscape done.

0:16:30 > 0:16:32- Do you want to see how I'm getting on?- Yes, please!

0:16:33 > 0:16:35- Wow...!- Think it's looking good?

0:16:35 > 0:16:38- It looks cool. - You ain't seen nothing yet.

0:16:38 > 0:16:42Let's put some lights on, by using a little bit of white and yellow.

0:16:42 > 0:16:43I've also got some red and blue.

0:16:43 > 0:16:46I'm going to use the corner, rather than the whole thing.

0:16:48 > 0:16:51Now, I'm just doing quick dashes with it.

0:16:52 > 0:16:53Do some strips there.

0:16:53 > 0:16:56This picture's shaping up to be a kind of New York skyline.

0:16:57 > 0:16:58Lots of lights on.

0:16:59 > 0:17:01It's not very good for their energy bill.

0:17:02 > 0:17:05Yeah, I'm pretty happy with that. Going to add a little bit of yellow.

0:17:08 > 0:17:10Just do some dashes here and there.

0:17:11 > 0:17:13Going to put some red in there now, as well.

0:17:14 > 0:17:18Just putting little injections of colour where there's a lot of black.

0:17:18 > 0:17:20Let's go for some blue.

0:17:20 > 0:17:22You can use any colour you like.

0:17:25 > 0:17:27Right, I think my picture's coming together now.

0:17:27 > 0:17:29Maybe this city's on, like, a river.

0:17:30 > 0:17:32A little shimmer down, like that.

0:17:32 > 0:17:34All the lights are reflecting in the water.

0:17:37 > 0:17:39Right, I think I'm there.

0:17:39 > 0:17:41Do you guys want to have a look?

0:17:41 > 0:17:42Yes!

0:17:42 > 0:17:43Time for the reveal...

0:17:43 > 0:17:46'I can't wait to see your cityscape.'

0:17:46 > 0:17:47Wow...!

0:17:47 > 0:17:49What would you guys give it out of ten?

0:17:49 > 0:17:52Definitely 33!

0:17:52 > 0:17:5433? That's amazing!

0:17:54 > 0:17:55Do you know what?

0:17:55 > 0:17:58That's made me feel so much better, I think my cold's gone away.

0:17:58 > 0:18:02I'm really happy with my library card cityscape.

0:18:03 > 0:18:05Thanks, Amelia. Thanks, Tamia. Thanks, Jaya. Goodbye!

0:18:05 > 0:18:07Bye! Thank you!

0:18:12 > 0:18:14Wow! That's one pretty city!

0:18:14 > 0:18:17See if you can do the same with an old library card.

0:18:20 > 0:18:21Here's a quick art tip.

0:18:21 > 0:18:23My nose feels too big with this cold,

0:18:23 > 0:18:26so I'm going to show you how to proportion a cartoon body.

0:18:26 > 0:18:29So, start by drawing four lines, equal distance apart.

0:18:31 > 0:18:33And these are going to be guides.

0:18:33 > 0:18:35Just done them in pencil. Grab a pen...

0:18:35 > 0:18:37In the top one, I'm going to draw the head.

0:18:37 > 0:18:39Cartoon characters have big heads

0:18:39 > 0:18:42and this means that you can draw the body and the leg section

0:18:42 > 0:18:44the same size as the head.

0:18:44 > 0:18:47So, in total, your character will be three heads high.

0:18:47 > 0:18:49Just draw some glasses on.

0:18:53 > 0:18:56In the second area, I'm going to draw the body.

0:18:56 > 0:19:00I'm going to make sure the arms are roughly the same length as the body.

0:19:07 > 0:19:08Now, the legs...

0:19:15 > 0:19:16And then, I'm going to draw the knees,

0:19:16 > 0:19:18just halfway between the feet and the hips.

0:19:18 > 0:19:22And in a few simple steps, my cartoon character is in proportion.

0:19:24 > 0:19:25There's a quick art tip.

0:19:29 > 0:19:31Why don't you add this to your body of work?

0:19:36 > 0:19:38Hey, you there!

0:19:38 > 0:19:40This guy's always on telly.

0:19:40 > 0:19:42He thinks he's got the world in the palm of his hand.

0:19:42 > 0:19:45Here's something you'll just have to own.

0:19:45 > 0:19:47A unique piece of art.

0:19:47 > 0:19:51It's a picture of your fingerprint!

0:19:51 > 0:19:52I was right about the hand.

0:19:52 > 0:19:56And worry not, although it's a massive fingerprint,

0:19:56 > 0:19:57you won't need a big hand.

0:19:57 > 0:19:59Here's how you make it...

0:20:00 > 0:20:05You'll need a tray, some paper and an inkpad.

0:20:06 > 0:20:08Now you need to make a fingerprint.

0:20:13 > 0:20:16With a photocopier or computer,

0:20:16 > 0:20:19enlarge to make the fingerprint fill an A4 page.

0:20:21 > 0:20:22Gigantic!

0:20:23 > 0:20:27Next, you'll need some PVA glue, with a nozzle, preferably.

0:20:28 > 0:20:31You must apply the glue to the print.

0:20:31 > 0:20:35Ensure you follow the lines of the fingerprint very carefully,

0:20:35 > 0:20:37to make sure they are all covered.

0:20:38 > 0:20:41The glue application may take some time.

0:20:41 > 0:20:42Phew!

0:20:45 > 0:20:49Grab some glitter and sprinkle liberally over the glued lines.

0:20:52 > 0:20:54Once your print is covered with glitter,

0:20:54 > 0:20:58shake off the excess glitter onto the tray.

0:20:58 > 0:20:59Mesmerising!

0:21:00 > 0:21:01Shaky-shaky!

0:21:03 > 0:21:08Finally, get a frame and attach it to your fingerprint picture.

0:21:10 > 0:21:11Perfect!

0:21:13 > 0:21:15The fingerprint picture!

0:21:15 > 0:21:18Available on a hand near you!

0:21:21 > 0:21:24Wow! Have to get my hands on one of those.

0:21:27 > 0:21:29Bye!

0:21:29 > 0:21:31Oh, hey, Dad. I didn't realise you were still here.

0:21:31 > 0:21:33That was your mate Michael just called.

0:21:33 > 0:21:34Something about art with light...?

0:21:34 > 0:21:36Oh, yeah, it's fine. I know all about that.

0:21:36 > 0:21:37Oh, and it's in a cave.

0:21:37 > 0:21:38A cave?

0:21:38 > 0:21:40That's not good, if you've got a cold.

0:21:40 > 0:21:42But you know what? I feel like I'm on the mend.

0:21:42 > 0:21:44You've got a bit in YOUR cave...

0:21:46 > 0:21:48Hey, I can do it myself! I'm a grown-up.

0:21:48 > 0:21:52He may be a grown-up, but he's still my little Ricky.

0:21:52 > 0:21:53I can hear you.

0:21:53 > 0:21:54So embarrassing!

0:22:09 > 0:22:11Ninja skills!

0:22:11 > 0:22:14Do you know what? I'm not so sure about this cave thing.

0:22:14 > 0:22:16I'm glad I brought my torch with me.

0:22:22 > 0:22:26Whoa...! It's darker in here than I thought. And colder.

0:22:26 > 0:22:27Achoo!

0:22:27 > 0:22:30I thought I got rid of those.

0:22:30 > 0:22:31Where's Michael?

0:22:35 > 0:22:37Michael?

0:22:37 > 0:22:39Michael!

0:22:39 > 0:22:41I'm here to do some art with light!

0:22:42 > 0:22:44Michael?

0:22:44 > 0:22:45That was a good echo.

0:22:46 > 0:22:48It was, wasn't it?

0:22:48 > 0:22:50Wasn't it? Wasn't it? Wasn't it?

0:22:50 > 0:22:52Wasn't it? Wasn't it?

0:22:54 > 0:22:56I'm so scared right now...

0:22:57 > 0:22:59And what's that over there?

0:23:13 > 0:23:14Oh!

0:23:14 > 0:23:17- Oh, Michael, you scared me out of my skin!- Hey, Ricky.

0:23:17 > 0:23:18You been crying?

0:23:18 > 0:23:21No, no, no. I've just got a bit of a cold.

0:23:21 > 0:23:24Well, let me show you something that'll send shivers down your spine.

0:23:25 > 0:23:27Oh, wow!

0:23:27 > 0:23:28Spooky!

0:23:28 > 0:23:30That looks like a skeleton in this cave.

0:23:31 > 0:23:33- I think we should go. - Chill out, man.

0:23:33 > 0:23:35It's just some light painting I've been doing.

0:23:35 > 0:23:39Michael Bosanko is well-known for making art with light.

0:23:39 > 0:23:41Here's some of his previous work...

0:23:41 > 0:23:42- Do you want to help?- Yeah.

0:23:42 > 0:23:44We'd better get our ninja on!

0:23:51 > 0:23:52Art Ninja!

0:23:52 > 0:23:54Art Ninja?

0:23:54 > 0:23:55Strike a pose.

0:23:59 > 0:24:01OK, Michael, what is light painting?

0:24:01 > 0:24:06Instead of using paint and brushes, we're using torches and light.

0:24:06 > 0:24:08OK. But we don't have a canvas.

0:24:08 > 0:24:09No. No, we don't.

0:24:09 > 0:24:11We're going to use three-dimensional space.

0:24:11 > 0:24:13So, how do we know we've made a picture?

0:24:13 > 0:24:14We're going to use a camera

0:24:14 > 0:24:17and any light we paint with is going to be captured on the sensor

0:24:17 > 0:24:18at the back of the camera.

0:24:18 > 0:24:20- So, we've got our lights...- Yeah.

0:24:20 > 0:24:22- We've got our camera...- We have.

0:24:22 > 0:24:23I guess it's time for action.

0:24:25 > 0:24:29We're going to need total darkness, so turn the lights off.

0:24:29 > 0:24:30Go!

0:24:30 > 0:24:33Because it's so dark, we're going to use our thermal imaging camera,

0:24:33 > 0:24:36so you can see from our body heat what we're doing.

0:24:36 > 0:24:39We're going to be opening the exposure for a few minutes.

0:24:39 > 0:24:42And then, when we're done, we'll close the exposure.

0:24:42 > 0:24:45This is awesome! I'm drawing a picture in the air!

0:24:46 > 0:24:47OK, I think I'm done.

0:24:47 > 0:24:50OK. Lights on. Come and have a look at the result.

0:24:50 > 0:24:53Ah, yeah! He came out really well.

0:24:53 > 0:24:57I drew my glasses on and even though I was writing Art Ninja backwards,

0:24:57 > 0:24:58it came out all right.

0:24:58 > 0:25:00I think that, with your guidance,

0:25:00 > 0:25:01we can do something bigger and better.

0:25:01 > 0:25:03- OK, let's do it, yeah.- Let's do it!

0:25:03 > 0:25:06OK, Michael, if we're going bigger, is there anything else we need?

0:25:06 > 0:25:09Yeah, we're going to need a lot more torches.

0:25:09 > 0:25:10This is cool.

0:25:10 > 0:25:11Yeah. I made this.

0:25:11 > 0:25:13LED strips.

0:25:13 > 0:25:14Lovely.

0:25:14 > 0:25:17I'm going to just illuminate part of the background with this.

0:25:19 > 0:25:21- Oh, wow!- Nice?- Love it!

0:25:21 > 0:25:23Oh, yeah.

0:25:23 > 0:25:27Place that somewhere on the floor in front of the camera, please.

0:25:28 > 0:25:29- That's your position.- Yep.

0:25:29 > 0:25:31Let's do it.

0:25:31 > 0:25:32Lights off?

0:25:32 > 0:25:33Yes, please.

0:25:35 > 0:25:37So, I guess this line of light you're tracing

0:25:37 > 0:25:39is making a picture frame?

0:25:39 > 0:25:40Indeed.

0:25:45 > 0:25:47I've got a trick up my sleeve.

0:25:47 > 0:25:48A secret weapon?

0:25:48 > 0:25:50A secret ninja weapon.

0:25:51 > 0:25:53So, what you up to there, then, Michael?

0:25:53 > 0:25:55I'm drawing a skeleton.

0:25:55 > 0:25:58Michael's secret weapon is gloves with lights on the fingertips.

0:25:58 > 0:26:02He's using them to trace a skeleton in the air

0:26:02 > 0:26:04and it's all going to be captured by his camera.

0:26:04 > 0:26:08I'm going to use this red wire to create a texture along the ground.

0:26:08 > 0:26:11It is a bit like painting with invisible ink, isn't it?

0:26:11 > 0:26:12Yeah.

0:26:12 > 0:26:15You have to try and remember where things go.

0:26:15 > 0:26:20The final touch... I'm going to throw some light onto the rocks.

0:26:20 > 0:26:23Oh, wow, that green background's rad!

0:26:23 > 0:26:25I can't wait to see the finished picture.

0:26:25 > 0:26:26And we're done.

0:26:26 > 0:26:27Amazing.

0:26:27 > 0:26:29So, I'm just going to turn the exposure off.

0:26:29 > 0:26:31How's it looking?

0:26:31 > 0:26:32Here we go...

0:26:34 > 0:26:36Oh, wow!

0:26:37 > 0:26:40A skeleton painting a picture of a skateboarder. It's truly rad!

0:26:45 > 0:26:47Look at it, it's amazing!

0:26:47 > 0:26:51And even the pillar's all lit up. It looks like he's standing right here.

0:26:51 > 0:26:52Good work, Michael.

0:26:52 > 0:26:54- Yeah, well done, Ricky. Excellent. - Thanks, dude.

0:26:55 > 0:26:58Well, that was a bit of LIGHT relief.

0:26:58 > 0:27:00And my cold has completely disappeared.

0:27:02 > 0:27:03Oh...

0:27:04 > 0:27:05Michael's disappeared, too.

0:27:07 > 0:27:08Michael?

0:27:08 > 0:27:10Michael!

0:27:13 > 0:27:15Ow! That was my foot, Ricky!

0:27:15 > 0:27:16Sorry!

0:27:22 > 0:27:26From lightsaber to screensaver, in just two clicks.

0:27:26 > 0:27:30Today has taught me a valuable Art Ninja lesson.

0:27:30 > 0:27:33If you make art in a cave, it can give you a fright.

0:27:33 > 0:27:36But it's better with a friend and a handy torch light.

0:27:37 > 0:27:40I'm so glad I got rid of that stinking cold.

0:27:40 > 0:27:42I'm now ready for more Art Ninja adventures.

0:27:42 > 0:27:44Fighting fit, in fact.

0:27:44 > 0:27:46Achoo!

0:27:46 > 0:27:47My cold's back!

0:27:47 > 0:27:50Argh...!

0:27:55 > 0:27:59To get your Art Ninja on, go to the cbbc website.

0:27:59 > 0:28:00Ninja skills!
