0:00:00 > 0:00:00know Julie good year? Doesn't matter.Do I lose marks for that?
0:00:00 > 0:00:00Right
0:00:03 > 0:00:05Have you ever wondered what it would be like if humans
0:00:05 > 0:00:06had the super skills of animals?
0:00:06 > 0:00:11But who would be crazy enough to try and fly like a falcon,
0:00:11 > 0:00:14grip like a gorilla, and swim like a shark?
0:00:14 > 0:00:19This guy.I'm Andy Torbet, and this is Beyond Bionic,
0:00:19 > 0:00:22the show where I try and match the skills of some of nature's most
0:00:22 > 0:00:24incredible animals.
0:00:24 > 0:00:26Action is Andy's middle name.
0:00:26 > 0:00:27I mean, it's Thomas, but...
0:00:28 > 0:00:33And now I'm using my super skills to take on nature's superheroes in the
0:00:33 > 0:00:35biggest challenge of my life.
0:00:35 > 0:00:37Whoa!And don't worry,
0:00:37 > 0:00:41I'm hanging around to make sure he doesn't do anything too extreme.
0:00:41 > 0:00:43Whoa.And today,
0:00:43 > 0:00:46I take to the water in a Beyond Bionic challenge
0:00:46 > 0:00:49against one of the world's fastest fish.
0:00:49 > 0:00:52Time to dive. I have to go all out,
0:00:52 > 0:00:56using the latest tech to try and match its super skills
0:00:56 > 0:00:59as I push my body to new heights.
0:00:59 > 0:01:03Now this really is...Beyond Bionic!
0:01:03 > 0:01:05Awesome wipe-out, dude!
0:01:29 > 0:01:33I've travelled 5,000 miles to the Pacific Ocean to meet this super
0:01:33 > 0:01:35swimmer. In today's episode,
0:01:35 > 0:01:38we're off the coast of California, in the USA.
0:01:40 > 0:01:43Hey, do you guys know where you're going?
0:01:43 > 0:01:47We're on a search for one of the fastest fish in the sea,
0:01:47 > 0:01:49a creature that moves so quick
0:01:49 > 0:01:52it'll go twice as fast as we're going right now,
0:01:52 > 0:01:54and we're going pretty quick.
0:01:54 > 0:01:57Whoa! So what's this superhero fish you're on about?
0:01:57 > 0:02:00Do tell, Andy.It's the mako shark,
0:02:00 > 0:02:02and I'm going to dive in and get up close.
0:02:04 > 0:02:08Shark? Don't be silly, Andy, we all know sharks are dangerous.
0:02:11 > 0:02:13OK, got to go, makos don't hang around for long.
0:02:16 > 0:02:18There's brave, and then there's crazy silly.
0:02:20 > 0:02:23Coming in, coming in.Shark...
0:02:23 > 0:02:24There's a shark behind you!
0:02:26 > 0:02:28Meet the mako.
0:02:28 > 0:02:30I've dived with sharks before,
0:02:30 > 0:02:34but this is the first time I've come face to face with the mako.
0:02:36 > 0:02:38I think he's really pleased to see you?
0:02:41 > 0:02:44Thankfully, the mako that's come to check me out isn't a fully grown
0:02:44 > 0:02:47adult, but at two metres long,
0:02:47 > 0:02:49this encounter is still pretty intimidating.
0:02:51 > 0:02:53And if the shark gets too close,
0:02:53 > 0:02:56I've only got this plastic pipe to protect me.
0:02:58 > 0:03:01That is a truly amazing experience,
0:03:01 > 0:03:03to be in the water with such a beautiful creature.
0:03:05 > 0:03:08But as well as that, it's so well-designed for what it does.
0:03:08 > 0:03:11You can see that beautiful sleek body that's designed to dart through
0:03:11 > 0:03:13the water at such high speeds,
0:03:13 > 0:03:15to chase those very fast prey that it eats.
0:03:15 > 0:03:16Just an amazing animal.
0:03:19 > 0:03:22And I can't resist one more swim with this incredible predator.
0:03:24 > 0:03:30These animals are super fast and can reach speeds of up to 46mph,
0:03:30 > 0:03:33and their speed even allows them to jump out of the water, too.
0:03:37 > 0:03:39This awesome skill is called breaching...
0:03:41 > 0:03:45..making them one of the ocean's best high jumpers.
0:03:45 > 0:03:47They can reach heights of up to nine metres.
0:03:49 > 0:03:52That's higher than two double-decker buses.
0:03:52 > 0:03:56The mako is definitely one of the coolest fish in the sea,
0:03:56 > 0:03:59and my challenge is to match its in-water speed,
0:03:59 > 0:04:04but crucially also build enough power to propel myself out
0:04:04 > 0:04:06of the water to great heights.
0:04:06 > 0:04:09It's time for me to go beyond bionic.
0:04:14 > 0:04:16The mako shark is built for speed.
0:04:16 > 0:04:20Its large tail helps to produce maximum power to propel it through
0:04:20 > 0:04:25the water, but it's not just known for its serious MPH.
0:04:25 > 0:04:27It can also do serious miles.
0:04:27 > 0:04:34One mako was recorded swimming 1,320 miles in 37 days.
0:04:34 > 0:04:38That's over 42,000 lengths of an Olympic-sized swimming pool.
0:04:39 > 0:04:41Someone give that fish a medal!
0:04:41 > 0:04:46And their teeth are some of the sharpest of all the shark family.
0:04:46 > 0:04:50They've up to 300 thin, razor-like teeth in their mouth at one time,
0:04:50 > 0:04:52designed to catch and grip fish.
0:04:53 > 0:04:56They don't like to chew, preferring to rip their food into bite-size
0:04:56 > 0:04:58chunks and swallow it whole.
0:04:58 > 0:04:59BURP!
0:04:59 > 0:05:02Eugh! Someone teach that shark some table manners!
0:05:03 > 0:05:06Although the mako is one of the fiercest predators of the sea,
0:05:06 > 0:05:09bugs called copepods choose to live and feed on them.
0:05:09 > 0:05:12So those strange-looking things hooked on to its fin
0:05:12 > 0:05:13actually live there.
0:05:15 > 0:05:18Wow, they get, like, a free lunch and ride all in one.
0:05:18 > 0:05:19Freeloaders!
0:05:25 > 0:05:29The Beyond Bionic team have given me the challenge of matching the mako
0:05:29 > 0:05:34shark's impressive speed through the water and then find a way to breach
0:05:34 > 0:05:36up to the height of nine metres.
0:05:39 > 0:05:41But before I can do any of that,
0:05:41 > 0:05:45I need to find a way to stay underwater for long periods of time.
0:05:45 > 0:05:48Us humans aren't designed to live underwater.
0:05:48 > 0:05:49Even with training,
0:05:49 > 0:05:53the longest I can hold my breath is about four minutes.
0:05:53 > 0:05:54Is that a shark sniggering?
0:05:55 > 0:05:59I've come to the Spanish island of Mallorca because, apparently,
0:05:59 > 0:06:02there's a piece of kit here that might be able to help me.
0:06:02 > 0:06:03Can I have an ice cream?
0:06:03 > 0:06:08I'm going on board this 476-tonne support ship
0:06:08 > 0:06:10that looks after this little beauty.
0:06:15 > 0:06:20This is not a sci-fi movie prop, this is the Triton submarine,
0:06:20 > 0:06:24an amazing bit of technology for exploring the deep blue sea.
0:06:24 > 0:06:26And guess what? I get to have a go.
0:06:30 > 0:06:34This incredible mini sub can dive down to 500 metres.
0:06:35 > 0:06:38Hey, that's like the length of five soccer pitches.
0:06:38 > 0:06:42That's deep! Here we go, time to dive.
0:06:45 > 0:06:48It's also the same depth a mako can dive to.
0:06:53 > 0:06:56We're only about 20 metres down,
0:06:56 > 0:06:57but look at that view.
0:06:59 > 0:07:01There's just so many fish around us,
0:07:01 > 0:07:05there's shoals above us, to both sides, beneath us.
0:07:05 > 0:07:07And our friendly underwater cameraman.
0:07:10 > 0:07:13Hey, buddy, you are not here to admire the view.
0:07:13 > 0:07:14RECORD SCRATCHES
0:07:14 > 0:07:15How long can you stay under?
0:07:15 > 0:07:17Well, the submarine has an operational endurance
0:07:17 > 0:07:18of about ten to 12 hours.
0:07:20 > 0:07:23Usually, it's all about human endurance.
0:07:23 > 0:07:26Typically, people will wear out long before the sub does.
0:07:26 > 0:07:28Yeah, I notice there's no toilet on board.
0:07:28 > 0:07:29That's right!
0:07:30 > 0:07:33What? No restrooms, surrounded by water?
0:07:33 > 0:07:34Yeah, that could be tricky.
0:07:34 > 0:07:36Better cross your legs, Andy.
0:07:36 > 0:07:41This is great, we are directly along the wall at a depth of seven metres.
0:07:41 > 0:07:42Roger that.
0:07:43 > 0:07:46The sub ticks the box for underwater staying power,
0:07:46 > 0:07:50but when it comes to speed, it's more seahorse than super shark...
0:07:52 > 0:07:57..because its top speed is only 3.5mph.
0:07:57 > 0:08:00This mako is going to make fish food out of you!
0:08:00 > 0:08:03If I'm going to match the power and speed of the mako,
0:08:03 > 0:08:06I'm going to have to find a different bit of technology.
0:08:06 > 0:08:09But spending some time underwater has been amazing.
0:08:09 > 0:08:12Patrick, could we head over there?
0:08:12 > 0:08:14Yes, we can go over there.Great.
0:08:16 > 0:08:19This trip down to the deep has got me thinking -
0:08:19 > 0:08:23how can I stay underwater and travel at super shark speeds?
0:08:24 > 0:08:27So confirm we are clear to surface, is that affirmative?
0:08:27 > 0:08:28Roger that.
0:08:29 > 0:08:33But as I'm finding out, this is going to be one hard fish to match.
0:08:43 > 0:08:46So the mako may be the fastest shark in the deep blue sea,
0:08:46 > 0:08:49but how do they compare to their friends?
0:08:49 > 0:08:53It's time for shark versus dolphin in a head-to-head race.
0:08:53 > 0:08:55On your makos, get set, go!
0:08:55 > 0:08:59Common dolphins need serious speed to show off their showboating flips
0:08:59 > 0:09:01and tricks, swimming at up to 22mph,
0:09:01 > 0:09:04but that's nothing compared to the mako.
0:09:04 > 0:09:07This fishy Ferrari can clock 46mph -
0:09:07 > 0:09:10that's over twice that of the common dolphin.
0:09:10 > 0:09:13Sorry, Flipper. In the sea, size matters.
0:09:13 > 0:09:16This is the bull shark, a giant of the ocean,
0:09:16 > 0:09:19measuring in at 2.2 metres, head to tail.
0:09:19 > 0:09:24But at 3.2 metres, there's a whole lot more shark making up the mako.
0:09:24 > 0:09:26Remind me again how tall you are, Andy.
0:09:26 > 0:09:27And that's not all we know.
0:09:27 > 0:09:30The mako is one mighty high jumper,
0:09:30 > 0:09:32but is it top of the class?
0:09:32 > 0:09:35I have a feeling this fact is going to mako my day.
0:09:35 > 0:09:38Meet the great white - one of nature's most fearless,
0:09:38 > 0:09:40fearsome and frightening creatures.
0:09:40 > 0:09:42And when this fish wants to get some air time,
0:09:42 > 0:09:45it reaches heights of three metres.
0:09:45 > 0:09:49But the mako, as we know, can ace that at nine.
0:09:49 > 0:09:51Slam dunk! That is off the scale!
0:09:54 > 0:09:58Animals really are nature's superheroes, and I'm totally in awe,
0:09:58 > 0:10:03but I'm also seriously competitive - hate being beaten and I like to win.
0:10:03 > 0:10:07So if I'm going to stand a chance against the strongest,
0:10:07 > 0:10:10fastest and best-designed animals in the world,
0:10:10 > 0:10:11I need their super skills.
0:10:11 > 0:10:13And how do I do that?
0:10:13 > 0:10:15I'm going around the world to find
0:10:15 > 0:10:17the latest in cutting-edge technology
0:10:17 > 0:10:19and the experts who can help me
0:10:19 > 0:10:21transform my body and go beyond bionic.
0:10:23 > 0:10:26My challenge is to swim as fast the mako shark.
0:10:26 > 0:10:30No chance. And match its ability to jump out of the water.
0:10:30 > 0:10:32I'm sure you'll whizz through this one.
0:10:32 > 0:10:34Better jump to it!
0:10:34 > 0:10:37To do this, I need to use science and technology
0:10:37 > 0:10:38to perfect my propulsion,
0:10:38 > 0:10:41something the mako is naturally awesome at.
0:10:41 > 0:10:44Propulsion. Mansplain that to me quick.
0:10:44 > 0:10:48Propulsion is the pushing force that makes an object move forwards and
0:10:48 > 0:10:53upwards. Mako sharks create this by flexing their super strong muscles
0:10:53 > 0:10:57to make wave-like movements from the top of the body to their tail.
0:10:58 > 0:11:02This movement pushes them through the water at top speed.
0:11:02 > 0:11:06Oh, OK, so you just need to get a funky wiggle on, Andy.
0:11:06 > 0:11:09If I'm going to take on this serious swimmer,
0:11:09 > 0:11:13I need to find the best tech tools to create the ultimate pushing force
0:11:13 > 0:11:15for speed and height.
0:11:15 > 0:11:17It's a multi-challenge.
0:11:17 > 0:11:18Two for one!
0:11:21 > 0:11:26My next stop is Italy, and I'm heading to the town of Padua,
0:11:26 > 0:11:27where things are about to get very wet.
0:11:29 > 0:11:31What are you doing there, signore?
0:11:31 > 0:11:33Building an underwater evil villain base?
0:11:33 > 0:11:35Trying out some new verruca socks?
0:11:35 > 0:11:36Ew.
0:11:36 > 0:11:37Please say it's not the socks.
0:11:39 > 0:11:41If I'm going to match the mako shark,
0:11:41 > 0:11:44I'm going to need some gadgetry to help me out.
0:11:44 > 0:11:48So I've come to Y-40, the world's deepest swimming pool,
0:11:48 > 0:11:52to test out some top tech and see if I can turn myself
0:11:52 > 0:11:54into a shark-like swimmer.
0:11:56 > 0:11:59I get it. Ooh, a curvy red thing,
0:11:59 > 0:12:01a funky backpack,
0:12:01 > 0:12:03and a big one of...those.
0:12:03 > 0:12:06That's quite some pool party you've got there, Andy.
0:12:06 > 0:12:09Look at all this fantastic gadgetry.
0:12:09 > 0:12:13We're going to start with the lowest tech of the lot - a monofin.
0:12:13 > 0:12:16Now, swimmers use this to give themselves extra power.
0:12:16 > 0:12:18So let's see how it performs.
0:12:26 > 0:12:31What I love about the monofin is how straightforward it is to use and the
0:12:31 > 0:12:35way it feels like a natural extension of my legs.
0:12:35 > 0:12:37I love the way it makes you look like a mermaid.
0:12:42 > 0:12:42But the fin isn't really helping me swim much faster.
0:12:42 > 0:12:45But the fin isn't really helping me swim much faster.
0:12:46 > 0:12:49Next to the mako's 46mph in the ocean...
0:12:51 > 0:12:53..I'd look like I was just treading water.
0:12:55 > 0:12:57It's helping to propel me through the water...
0:12:59 > 0:13:02..and I can push myself out of it...a bit.
0:13:08 > 0:13:12Well, that worked...very well,
0:13:12 > 0:13:15especially as it's such a simple design.
0:13:16 > 0:13:18So let's how the next one performs.
0:13:19 > 0:13:21Got anything a bit, um, techier?
0:13:22 > 0:13:26This is the X2 and it's got two thrusters,
0:13:26 > 0:13:30which the makers say can propel you through the water faster than an
0:13:30 > 0:13:32Olympic swimmer. Let's see if that's true.
0:13:33 > 0:13:34Olympic swimmer?
0:13:35 > 0:13:38What happened to trying to swim faster than a mako shark?
0:13:39 > 0:13:40Is your brain soggy?
0:13:44 > 0:13:46Thanks to my wrist-mounted thrusters,
0:13:46 > 0:13:51I feel like I could swim and swim and swim and not get tired.
0:13:52 > 0:13:55The mako is a long-distance swimmer, too,
0:13:55 > 0:13:59and has been known to clock up a whopping 62 miles in a day.
0:13:59 > 0:14:02That's the same as two and a half marathons.
0:14:02 > 0:14:04I feel like a human torpedo,
0:14:04 > 0:14:06but can it propel me through the water fast enough
0:14:06 > 0:14:08for the all-important breach test?
0:14:11 > 0:14:13Here comes the but.
0:14:16 > 0:14:20OK, well, you don't get much distance out of water
0:14:20 > 0:14:23because as soon as the engines are in the air, they lose power.
0:14:25 > 0:14:27Maybe you should try them on your ankles.
0:14:28 > 0:14:31Whoa, wait a second! What's this thing?
0:14:33 > 0:14:36This is the Seabob,
0:14:36 > 0:14:39and it works by sucking in water at the front
0:14:39 > 0:14:43and then firing it out the back in a jet to give power and speed.
0:14:43 > 0:14:45I've got high hopes for this one.
0:14:50 > 0:14:52Cool, Andy.
0:14:52 > 0:14:54OK, watch out for the tun...
0:14:54 > 0:14:55Oops!
0:14:59 > 0:15:02Straight away, this feels quick, really quick.
0:15:03 > 0:15:06You won't catch me staying still for long,
0:15:06 > 0:15:09something the mako knows all about.
0:15:09 > 0:15:14Sharks extract oxygen from water as it flows across their gills.
0:15:14 > 0:15:17So if a mako stops swimming, it could drown.
0:15:18 > 0:15:21A truly breathtaking fact.
0:15:24 > 0:15:27Now, that was a lot of fun.
0:15:27 > 0:15:30It's got bags of power, bags of speed.
0:15:31 > 0:15:32This is a good bit of kit.
0:15:36 > 0:15:40Time to see just how powerful this underwater tech really is.
0:15:44 > 0:15:47Never mind mako, look at you ma-go!
0:15:51 > 0:15:55It's a good breach, but not anywhere near nine metres.
0:15:55 > 0:15:58The weight of the Seabob is pulling me back into the pool
0:15:58 > 0:16:01before I can get any serious air. The machine is good,
0:16:01 > 0:16:04but lacked the levels of propulsion I need.
0:16:04 > 0:16:07Well, clearly, there are some fantastic bits of technology
0:16:07 > 0:16:10out there to propel me through the water and out of it, a little bit.
0:16:11 > 0:16:14But as good as that technology is,
0:16:14 > 0:16:18it is no match for the power and speed of the mako shark.
0:16:20 > 0:16:21And I think I'll have one more go.
0:16:23 > 0:16:24Don't you dare.
0:16:24 > 0:16:27Andy, you come back here right now!
0:16:27 > 0:16:29Andy! Oh, I give up.
0:16:34 > 0:16:38The Beyond Bionic team have set me the impossible challenge to swim and
0:16:38 > 0:16:41breach out of the water like a mako shark.
0:16:41 > 0:16:43I've tried out some incredible gadgetry,
0:16:43 > 0:16:46but so far none have taken me beyond bionic.
0:16:47 > 0:16:51My options are running out to find the right bionic tech to complete
0:16:51 > 0:16:54this challenge. I think to get any real speed up,
0:16:54 > 0:16:56I need a bit more practice.
0:16:57 > 0:16:59The question is - can I find some technology
0:16:59 > 0:17:01that will let me beat the mako at its own game?
0:17:08 > 0:17:10For the final part of my mission
0:17:10 > 0:17:11to match the mako,
0:17:11 > 0:17:15the Beyond Bionic team have sent me back to where I started.
0:17:15 > 0:17:17On my trek to find the right tech,
0:17:17 > 0:17:19I'm in California again.
0:17:19 > 0:17:21Is this show called Beyond Vacation?
0:17:21 > 0:17:24Maybe I should splash out on some better beachwear.
0:17:24 > 0:17:27I've had the chance to use some world-class technology
0:17:27 > 0:17:29to explore the depths of the oceans
0:17:29 > 0:17:32and to rack up some pretty impressive speeds,
0:17:32 > 0:17:35but none of it has given me the ability to zoom through
0:17:35 > 0:17:38the water and then leap out of it just like a mako shark.
0:17:38 > 0:17:41But I've had an idea.
0:17:41 > 0:17:42I'm going to try using that.
0:17:46 > 0:17:49This is the ZR hoverboard.
0:17:49 > 0:17:53Inspired by the Back To The Future movies and the famous Silver Surfer
0:17:53 > 0:17:57superhero, the board is designed to let you ride at high speeds and surf
0:17:57 > 0:17:58above the water.
0:18:01 > 0:18:05I've got one last chance to complete my challenge to match the mako for
0:18:05 > 0:18:07speed and jumping ability.
0:18:07 > 0:18:10Could this top tech be the answer I'm looking for?
0:18:10 > 0:18:14And I'm in safe hands with Paul, one of the USA's best hoverboarders.
0:18:14 > 0:18:16He seems pretty stoked.
0:18:16 > 0:18:17How does it work?Yeah,
0:18:17 > 0:18:21so basically the hoverboard hooks up to the jet-ski and then the water is
0:18:21 > 0:18:23re-directed from the jet-ski to the hoverboard, through a hose.
0:18:23 > 0:18:26So I've seen it being used like a skateboard or a snowboard,
0:18:26 > 0:18:28where the person has stood up, which is really cool,
0:18:28 > 0:18:31but do you think there's a way of using it so that I'm more like
0:18:31 > 0:18:34a mako shark?Yeah, I think if you lay down,
0:18:34 > 0:18:36you can be more like a mako shark.
0:18:36 > 0:18:40That's a great idea. Shall we go for it?Let's go.
0:18:40 > 0:18:43Um, Andy, haven't you forgotten something?
0:18:43 > 0:18:45To match the mako, you need to swim UNDER the water, too.
0:18:46 > 0:18:49All right, so, Andy, what you're going to do, OK,
0:18:49 > 0:18:51you're going to hold the board like a boogie board,
0:18:51 > 0:18:53you're going to hold your hands up top...
0:18:53 > 0:18:54OK.And you're going to let it take you, OK?
0:18:54 > 0:18:57Uh-huh.You're going to lay on it. Yeah.Hands out.Mm-hm.
0:18:57 > 0:18:59Fully extended, turn left, turn left.Got it.Turn right.Yeah.
0:18:59 > 0:19:01Turn right.Right. When I give you throttle,
0:19:01 > 0:19:03that board's going to want to come up.Oh, yeah.
0:19:03 > 0:19:05But just push back down on it with your arms, OK?
0:19:05 > 0:19:08Yeah.And that will flatten it out. Yeah.Yeah.
0:19:08 > 0:19:10OK, you got all that, Andy?
0:19:10 > 0:19:11Time to hoverboard.
0:19:12 > 0:19:14Like a mako shark.
0:19:14 > 0:19:15Hey, this guy's pretty good.
0:19:15 > 0:19:18I wonder if he can really make you like a mako.
0:19:22 > 0:19:27It seems the key to my success or failure is how well I can balance.
0:19:30 > 0:19:33The mako shark, like most fish,
0:19:33 > 0:19:35balances and breaks using its pectoral fins.
0:19:35 > 0:19:38They're on either side of the body behind the gills.
0:19:38 > 0:19:40If only I had some.
0:19:41 > 0:19:43I think I'm in for a bumpy ride.
0:19:46 > 0:19:48Yeah, yeah, yeah!
0:19:48 > 0:19:51You know what they say, Andy, don't mako before you can walk-o.
0:19:53 > 0:19:55Yeah, like a cowboy, whoo!
0:19:55 > 0:19:59Yee-haw!
0:19:59 > 0:20:00Apart from the balance,
0:20:00 > 0:20:04the bit I'm finding difficult is getting any height above the water,
0:20:04 > 0:20:06and that's what the mako shark excels at.
0:20:08 > 0:20:12They're such powerful swimmers that they can breach up to nine metres
0:20:12 > 0:20:16high. That's more than five times my height.
0:20:16 > 0:20:17Hey, you've got a lot to live up to.
0:20:19 > 0:20:24So for me to get close, I need some more tips from Paul.
0:20:24 > 0:20:26Basically, what you're going to do now to get more lift is you want to
0:20:26 > 0:20:29shift your weight back towards the back of the board.
0:20:29 > 0:20:30As you start to get higher,
0:20:30 > 0:20:34push back down on the board and that will level you out.
0:20:34 > 0:20:36All right, sounds good, let's give it a try.All right.
0:20:43 > 0:20:46Time to put theory into practice,
0:20:46 > 0:20:48and it's not long before I'm reaching heights
0:20:48 > 0:20:50nearer those of our sharky friend.
0:20:50 > 0:20:53Yeah, whoo!
0:20:53 > 0:20:55Mako shark!
0:20:55 > 0:20:58Um, kind of surf dude!
0:20:58 > 0:21:01But, Andy, you know what goes up must come down.
0:21:01 > 0:21:06And down. Down and down again.
0:21:06 > 0:21:07Awesome wipe-out, dude!
0:21:07 > 0:21:09I'm not having any problems getting airborne,
0:21:09 > 0:21:12I'm getting right out of the water.
0:21:12 > 0:21:16But I'm just not really getting any speed under the water.
0:21:16 > 0:21:19I think I'll have another go.
0:21:19 > 0:21:23This bionic board is great for speed and lift on the surface.
0:21:26 > 0:21:30But try as I might, I can't push the board under the water.
0:21:30 > 0:21:32It's simply not happening.
0:21:32 > 0:21:34Go, Andy! Yeah!
0:21:34 > 0:21:38The angle of the water jet makes it too difficult to try and go down
0:21:38 > 0:21:40underwater.Whoo!
0:21:40 > 0:21:41Ride 'em, cowboy!
0:21:42 > 0:21:45And that's where the mako shark really trumps me.
0:21:45 > 0:21:48Its nose, fins and tail are engineered
0:21:48 > 0:21:52for underwater swimming, and its body is designed to be a perfect
0:21:52 > 0:21:55torpedo shape to move at speed through the water.
0:21:58 > 0:22:02I need to face facts - I can't match the mako for underwater speed,
0:22:02 > 0:22:07but this tech does give me a chance to propel myself out of the water.
0:22:11 > 0:22:15The question is - can I hit the nine-metre mark?
0:22:15 > 0:22:16Here goes!
0:22:23 > 0:22:25Oh, that's one way of getting underwater.
0:22:25 > 0:22:29That's got to hurt. Andy, are you all right?
0:22:29 > 0:22:31Are you OK?
0:22:31 > 0:22:32Good job, mate.
0:22:34 > 0:22:36Sorry, Andy, I think it's time to pull the plug.
0:22:41 > 0:22:45That big powerful jet of water at the back was propelling me
0:22:45 > 0:22:46right out up in the air,
0:22:46 > 0:22:50but unfortunately it's just not deciding to go underwater.
0:22:50 > 0:22:53I just couldn't match the mako shark.
0:22:54 > 0:22:56Don't be down, Andy.
0:22:56 > 0:22:58You gave it your best shot.
0:22:58 > 0:22:59Forget about the what-ifs.
0:23:00 > 0:23:02What if a mako shark raced
0:23:02 > 0:23:04an Olympic breaststroke swimmer
0:23:04 > 0:23:06over 50 metres?
0:23:06 > 0:23:08The mako is so fast it would finish
0:23:08 > 0:23:10the race in only 2.5 seconds.
0:23:10 > 0:23:12That's ten times quicker
0:23:12 > 0:23:13than the world record.
0:23:13 > 0:23:15What if you hugged a mako shark?
0:23:15 > 0:23:16It won't be very cuddly!
0:23:16 > 0:23:18That's because its skin is rough as
0:23:18 > 0:23:20sandpaper, and it's all down to the
0:23:20 > 0:23:22thousands of teeth-like scales
0:23:22 > 0:23:23that cover its body.
0:23:23 > 0:23:26What if humans had as many teeth as a mako shark?
0:23:26 > 0:23:28Well, we'd get a lot of visits from the tooth fairy.
0:23:28 > 0:23:31The mako shark has over 300 gnashers,
0:23:31 > 0:23:33which continually shed and replace themselves,
0:23:33 > 0:23:36meaning they get through thousands in their lifetime.
0:23:41 > 0:23:45There's one final machine that's been inspired by sharks.
0:23:47 > 0:23:50It's designed to give riders a glimpse of the mako's raw power.
0:23:52 > 0:23:56I've just been told I get to have a go in that mean machine.
0:23:57 > 0:23:58This is going to be awesome!
0:24:01 > 0:24:06This is the Seabreacher, a mashup between a speedboat and a submarine.
0:24:08 > 0:24:11And it looks more than capable
0:24:08 > 0:24:11of matching the mako.
0:24:13 > 0:24:15What's up, man? You ready to feel like a mako?
0:24:15 > 0:24:18I certainly am, can I jump in? Yes, sir.Sweet.
0:24:18 > 0:24:19My pilot is Anthony.
0:24:19 > 0:24:21It's a little choppy, so...
0:24:21 > 0:24:22And he's going to put
0:24:22 > 0:24:25this shark-inspired torpedo through its paces.
0:24:25 > 0:24:28This I got to see.
0:24:28 > 0:24:29So, Anthony...Yes, sir?
0:24:29 > 0:24:31How fast can this thing go?
0:24:31 > 0:24:33It can do about 60mph.
0:24:33 > 0:24:35Can you show me?Yes, sir, I can.
0:24:35 > 0:24:38You know what rhymes with shower?
0:24:38 > 0:24:42What rhymes with shower? Power.
0:24:42 > 0:24:44Whoa!
0:24:44 > 0:24:46I like this guy, he's cool.
0:24:50 > 0:24:53The speed and acceleration of this thing is incredible.
0:24:54 > 0:24:55It's like being in a jet fighter.
0:24:58 > 0:25:02This is really fun and it's given me an idea of what it's like to be a
0:25:02 > 0:25:05powerful mako cutting through the water.
0:25:05 > 0:25:07And it even looks like a shark, too!
0:25:07 > 0:25:09Check out that fin and those teeth.
0:25:09 > 0:25:12Argh!So that's what it can do on the surface,
0:25:12 > 0:25:15can it actually go underwater for a little bit as well?
0:25:15 > 0:25:17Oh, yeah.OK.
0:25:17 > 0:25:19That's when it gets fun.
0:25:19 > 0:25:21Andy, you're having way too much fun.
0:25:24 > 0:25:28And with its underwater top speed of 40mph,
0:25:28 > 0:25:32it's clear the Seabreacher can match the mako on the power front.
0:25:33 > 0:25:36What about breaching then, like a mako shark does?
0:25:36 > 0:25:39Oh, yeah. You want to breach a little?
0:25:39 > 0:25:43Yeah, let's try it, breach. All right.
0:25:43 > 0:25:45Power and breaching all in one?
0:25:45 > 0:25:46You go, shark boy!
0:25:47 > 0:25:51So can the Seabreacher take me totally mako?
0:25:59 > 0:26:01Whoa!
0:26:01 > 0:26:04That's incredible.
0:26:04 > 0:26:07This shark-inspired Seabreacher is as close as I can get
0:26:07 > 0:26:10to matching the mako's power.
0:26:10 > 0:26:13But it can't get me to breach as high or swim as deep
0:26:13 > 0:26:15as the mighty mako.
0:26:17 > 0:26:18OK, people, that's a wrap.
0:26:21 > 0:26:25This has been an amazing experience from start to finish.
0:26:25 > 0:26:28It was incredible to come face to face
0:26:28 > 0:26:30with one of nature's best swimmers.
0:26:30 > 0:26:34I went fin to fin with the mako to try and match its super swimming and
0:26:34 > 0:26:38jumping skills, using an awesome mini submersible
0:26:38 > 0:26:39in the Mediterranean,
0:26:39 > 0:26:43trying out tech to propel myself through the water in Italy.
0:26:45 > 0:26:49And then riding the hoverboard that got me leaping out of the water.
0:26:49 > 0:26:54But in the end, I just couldn't match the mighty mako.
0:26:54 > 0:26:58Yep, I had access to some of the best technology in the world
0:26:58 > 0:27:00and yet I still couldn't come close
0:27:00 > 0:27:03to matching the millions of years of evolution that
0:27:03 > 0:27:05has made the mako shark one of the fastest
0:27:05 > 0:27:07and most agile creatures on the
0:27:07 > 0:27:11planet. So, mako shark, you win this one.
0:27:11 > 0:27:15And my work here is finished.
0:27:15 > 0:27:17Finished, get it? Fin-ished.
0:27:17 > 0:27:18Fin, like a shark's fin.
0:27:18 > 0:27:21No? Suit yourself.
