0:14:11 > 0:14:14badges, pets, presenters, and your post.

0:14:14 > 0:14:18We've only got five minutes to get ready for your Blue Peter adventure.

0:14:20 > 0:14:22'I've been set the challenge of becoming

0:14:22 > 0:14:25'a qualified Football Association referee.

0:14:25 > 0:14:29'And, despite setting out not knowing anything about football...'

0:14:29 > 0:14:30I can't get my book open.

0:14:30 > 0:14:34'..I managed to finish my training, and pass the exam.

0:14:34 > 0:14:36'But the story doesn't end there.

0:14:36 > 0:14:39'I had to complete six matches where I'm observed

0:14:39 > 0:14:42'by a qualified official before I can referee on my own.'

0:14:44 > 0:14:47So, today is the day of my first practice match,

0:14:47 > 0:14:49and I've got to say I'm really nervous,

0:14:49 > 0:14:51especially because I've watched a few games,

0:14:51 > 0:14:53and seen how much pressure is put on the referee.

0:14:53 > 0:14:55Luckily, I've got a bit of help today

0:14:55 > 0:14:58from someone who definitely knows his stuff.

0:14:58 > 0:14:59- COMMENTATOR:- Big decision here.

0:14:59 > 0:15:01'That's right, Howard Webb,

0:15:01 > 0:15:03'one of the best refs the country has ever produced.

0:15:03 > 0:15:07'He's even refereed the World Cup final.

0:15:07 > 0:15:11'And, today, he's come to watch from the sidelines. No pressure, then!'

0:15:11 > 0:15:12REFEREE'S WHISTLE

0:15:14 > 0:15:16Step forward a bit, keep going.

0:15:18 > 0:15:20So much going on at once, and everyone shouting.

0:15:20 > 0:15:22SHOUTING FROM THE CROWD

0:15:23 > 0:15:25It's really hard to concentrate.

0:15:25 > 0:15:28It's also really hard not to get in the way.

0:15:32 > 0:15:34Lindsey just gave a goal kick.

0:15:34 > 0:15:36And if she'd allowed herself a bit more time,

0:15:36 > 0:15:39she'd have realised it was a corner. The players knew it was a corner.

0:15:39 > 0:15:41Oh, good finish.

0:15:41 > 0:15:43What advice could you give me to get better?

0:15:43 > 0:15:45I think you need to look back on today's game

0:15:45 > 0:15:48and the times when you felt uncomfortable out there

0:15:48 > 0:15:50because you felt you were in the wrong position,

0:15:50 > 0:15:52think why that happened, what you could do.

0:15:52 > 0:15:54I got almost smacked by the ball twice.

0:15:54 > 0:15:55That's not brilliant, is it?

0:15:55 > 0:15:58What I noticed is how much better you got in the second half,

0:15:58 > 0:16:00how much more comfortable you looked.

0:16:00 > 0:16:02- I guess that's the way it felt to you as well.- Yeah.

0:16:02 > 0:16:04FINAL WHISTLE BLOWS

0:16:04 > 0:16:07'Taking Howard's advice on board, it's straight on to my next match.

0:16:07 > 0:16:11'I'm going to concentrate on getting the decisions right,

0:16:11 > 0:16:13'and try and enjoy myself.

0:16:13 > 0:16:16'This time, another qualified referee, Jess, is here

0:16:16 > 0:16:18'to give me her top tips.'

0:16:18 > 0:16:21For an offside, what you do is hold your arm up in the air.

0:16:21 > 0:16:23- Is that offside?- Yeah, offside. And when they kick the ball,

0:16:23 > 0:16:25you can then bring your arm back down.

0:16:25 > 0:16:27You can blow as hard as you want,

0:16:27 > 0:16:29no-one's going to say, oh, it's too hard.

0:16:29 > 0:16:32It's never too hard. You want everyone to know what you're doing.

0:16:32 > 0:16:33REFEREE'S WHISTLE

0:16:33 > 0:16:35'And, with Jess' encouragement spurring me on,

0:16:35 > 0:16:38'I went into the next game feeling like a proper referee.'

0:16:38 > 0:16:39Bring it back.

0:16:39 > 0:16:41Free kick.

0:16:41 > 0:16:43That's my third ever.

0:16:43 > 0:16:46'I even managed to avoid being hit by the ball.

0:16:46 > 0:16:48'Things are going well.

0:16:48 > 0:16:51'I'm not sure top referees celebrate goals, though!

0:16:51 > 0:16:53'But, will it be enough to complete my challenge?

0:16:53 > 0:16:57'It all comes down to a final game.'

0:16:57 > 0:16:58REFEREE'S WHISTLE

0:16:58 > 0:17:02So, that brings us to today, and I'm going to be refereeing a Cup match

0:17:02 > 0:17:05between the Manchester Maccabi Raptors, and the Barr Hill Aces.

0:17:05 > 0:17:07I'm a bit nervous.

0:17:07 > 0:17:10Brian, from Manchester FA, is here to assess my performance.

0:17:10 > 0:17:13Brian, what are you mainly going to be looking out for today?

0:17:13 > 0:17:16When you make your decisions, make them positive.

0:17:16 > 0:17:20Good voice, clear signal. Concentrate on a good whistle.

0:17:20 > 0:17:23And, as I say, just enjoy the game.

0:17:23 > 0:17:25Here we go. Last game.

0:17:25 > 0:17:27REFEREE'S WHISTLE

0:17:27 > 0:17:30'Unlike my other games, this is a Cup match which means

0:17:30 > 0:17:34'any mistake I make could have big consequences.'

0:17:34 > 0:17:36Go in.

0:17:36 > 0:17:40'But, with Brian listening in on the sideline, and offering support,

0:17:40 > 0:17:41'my confidence begins to build,

0:17:41 > 0:17:45'and soon I'm in control and enjoying the game.'

0:17:45 > 0:17:46REFEREE'S WHISTLE

0:17:46 > 0:17:49Wow. They're on one.

0:17:49 > 0:17:52'I'm remembering the advice from Howard, Jess and Brian,

0:17:52 > 0:17:55'keeping good positions, and being strong in my decisions.'

0:17:55 > 0:17:56Back.

0:17:56 > 0:17:58Back, back, back, back.

0:17:58 > 0:18:00Keep going back until you're level with my arm.

0:18:00 > 0:18:01Yeah. Big whistle.

0:18:01 > 0:18:03REFEREE'S WHISTLE

0:18:03 > 0:18:05Well done, excellent.

0:18:06 > 0:18:08'The standard is really high.

0:18:08 > 0:18:11'And both teams are fighting for the win.'

0:18:12 > 0:18:13REFEREE'S WHISTLE

0:18:13 > 0:18:17'With the final seconds ticking away, I've just spotted a pass back

0:18:17 > 0:18:20'which is not allowed and, for that, I award an indirect free kick

0:18:20 > 0:18:22'inside the penalty area.'

0:18:22 > 0:18:25All stop shouting. All defenders, behind this line.

0:18:25 > 0:18:28'I've never dealt with this before, and it's really tense.'

0:18:28 > 0:18:31Everyone back in line with Malachi.

0:18:31 > 0:18:34'This is a major opportunity for the Yellows to win the game.'

0:18:34 > 0:18:36REFEREE'S WHISTLE

0:18:37 > 0:18:39'But the Blues' goalkeeper makes the save

0:18:39 > 0:18:41'and the match goes to penalties.'

0:18:43 > 0:18:46CHEERING AFTER EACH PENALTY

0:18:48 > 0:18:52'And, after that epic contest, the Blues come out on top.

0:18:52 > 0:18:54'Have I done enough to prove that I can referee

0:18:54 > 0:18:56'a match on my own?'

0:18:56 > 0:18:59Your position and movement was excellent today.

0:18:59 > 0:19:04Match control was good. Your signals, whistle was very positive.

0:19:04 > 0:19:06So, on that performance today,

0:19:06 > 0:19:09I really think you're capable of moving onto grassroots football

0:19:09 > 0:19:12and becoming a fully-fledged referee.

0:19:12 > 0:19:13- Yes!- Well done.

0:19:13 > 0:19:16Brian, I've wanted to hear that for months.

0:19:16 > 0:19:20'So, I've done it. World Cup final, here I come!'
