0:00:06 > 0:00:08This is Blue Peter but mini.
0:00:08 > 0:00:13Expect epic adventures, makes, bakes, badges, pets,
0:00:13 > 0:00:14presenters and your post.
0:00:14 > 0:00:18We've only got five minutes, so get ready for your Blue Peter adventure.
0:00:22 > 0:00:24Catching the first wave of the day.
0:00:26 > 0:00:28Breaking the surface of the water.
0:00:30 > 0:00:31The freedom.
0:00:32 > 0:00:34The ride.
0:00:36 > 0:00:40Surfing - some say it's in the soul.
0:00:40 > 0:00:41Linds?
0:00:41 > 0:00:45Radzi, sh! I'm trying to make the start of the film look really cool.
0:00:45 > 0:00:48But aren't we missing something?
0:00:48 > 0:00:49What do you mean?
0:00:49 > 0:00:50A beach?
0:00:50 > 0:00:52Ah.
0:00:52 > 0:00:54Yeah, fair point, Radz.
0:00:54 > 0:00:57When you think of surfing, you'd probably imagine sandy beaches
0:00:57 > 0:01:00and the sea, not a lake in the Welsh countryside.
0:01:01 > 0:01:05This is Surf Snowdonia and it attracts some of the best
0:01:05 > 0:01:11surfers in the world, like four times Welsh champion Jo Dennison.
0:01:11 > 0:01:13I'm pumped to be here.
0:01:13 > 0:01:16We can see how big those waves are, but we're not at a beach.
0:01:16 > 0:01:17How on earth does this work?
0:01:17 > 0:01:20And we've got a tub for you to help explain it to us.
0:01:20 > 0:01:22It's really simple.
0:01:22 > 0:01:24Basically, there's a big snowplough
0:01:24 > 0:01:26that goes down the pier and that creates the waves,
0:01:26 > 0:01:28just like this.
0:01:28 > 0:01:29The snowplough goes through the water,
0:01:29 > 0:01:32which pushes the water out the way, and you get really fun waves.
0:01:32 > 0:01:35Oh, right, so it's actually creating a wave each side of the plough,
0:01:35 > 0:01:37- isn't it? And you can surf on them.- Exactly.
0:01:37 > 0:01:39Well, you made it look so easy.
0:01:39 > 0:01:42I don't think we're going to look quite like that today, are we?
0:01:42 > 0:01:45I've actually done a lot of surfing myself...on the internet.
0:01:45 > 0:01:47THEY LAUGH
0:01:47 > 0:01:48Unlike in the sea,
0:01:48 > 0:01:51the snowplough creates a two-metre wave every 90 seconds.
0:01:54 > 0:01:57Jo's going to give us a surfing masterclass,
0:01:57 > 0:01:59but we need to start on dry land.
0:01:59 > 0:02:02OK, so this is the front, this is the tail.
0:02:02 > 0:02:06The top, where we're going to be standing on, and we've got our
0:02:06 > 0:02:09fins and they help you with steering when you're on a wave.
0:02:09 > 0:02:12But before we even think about steering,
0:02:12 > 0:02:14we need to master standing up.
0:02:14 > 0:02:15OK, so, when you're lying on your board,
0:02:15 > 0:02:17you want to keep nice and streamlined,
0:02:17 > 0:02:19so keep your toes together.
0:02:19 > 0:02:22So you can see the wave coming, so if you just look over your shoulder.
0:02:22 > 0:02:25- Then you're going to start to paddle.- Linds, paddle, quick!
0:02:25 > 0:02:26THEY GIGGLE
0:02:26 > 0:02:31OK, right. So I'm going to go one, two and you're surfing.
0:02:31 > 0:02:34- OK.- OK.
0:02:34 > 0:02:36Ohhh, OK, right.
0:02:36 > 0:02:38I'm surfing! Linds, you're off.
0:02:38 > 0:02:39Time to get in the water?
0:02:39 > 0:02:42- Yes!- Sounds good.- Linds, you up for getting in the water?
0:02:44 > 0:02:47Water again. I said, "Never again."
0:02:47 > 0:02:48No more water.
0:02:48 > 0:02:52- Linds, Linds, Linds. - Sorry. Yeah, sorry.
0:02:52 > 0:02:54- Sh-shall we go?- Yeah. - Yeah, let's go.
0:02:54 > 0:02:56- No, I love a water-based challenge. - Yeah.
0:02:59 > 0:03:02First up, Jo wants us to get used to catching the waves.
0:03:04 > 0:03:07We need to lie down and paddle as hard as we can with our arms.
0:03:07 > 0:03:09Whoa!
0:03:09 > 0:03:11- Whoooo!- Aaah!
0:03:11 > 0:03:13And when you get it right, it's so much fun.
0:03:13 > 0:03:16THEY SCREAM AND LAUGH
0:03:19 > 0:03:20Whoa!
0:03:20 > 0:03:24Now we've got a feel for the waves, it's time to try and stand up.
0:03:25 > 0:03:27SHE SCREAMS
0:03:27 > 0:03:31This is so much harder than it looks and Jo hasn't finished with us yet.
0:03:34 > 0:03:37OK, so we've got time for one more surf session.
0:03:37 > 0:03:38- We're going to do a challenge.- Yes.
0:03:38 > 0:03:42Whoever stands up for the longest on a wave will be crowned
0:03:42 > 0:03:44Blue Peter surfing superstar.
0:03:44 > 0:03:45- Oooh.- Wow.
0:03:47 > 0:03:51So, it's the best of three waves. Who can stay up the longest?
0:03:51 > 0:03:53And I'm first.
0:03:53 > 0:03:55Here we go.
0:03:55 > 0:03:58Ah. That didn't quite go to plan.
0:03:58 > 0:04:00Unlucky, Linds. My turn now.
0:04:01 > 0:04:04Nope, got the timing all wrong.
0:04:04 > 0:04:06OK, here we go, round two.
0:04:06 > 0:04:08I manage to catch the wave...
0:04:11 > 0:04:13..but, again, I just can't stand up.
0:04:14 > 0:04:16Let's see if I can do better.
0:04:16 > 0:04:19Up, I'm actually up!
0:04:19 > 0:04:20That must count, surely?
0:04:21 > 0:04:25OK, time for my final go. I can't let Radzi win.
0:04:26 > 0:04:27Ooh, nearly.
0:04:29 > 0:04:31Oh, no.
0:04:31 > 0:04:35Come on, Radzi, one last chance to get this right. This is the one.
0:04:38 > 0:04:42I'm surfing, I'm actually surfing.
0:04:42 > 0:04:45I'm up, I'm balancing, I think I've... I've done it!
0:04:48 > 0:04:50I just surfed the wave properly!
0:04:50 > 0:04:52Ha-ha!
0:04:52 > 0:04:54Mwah!
0:04:54 > 0:04:56I loved it, I absolutely loved it.
0:04:56 > 0:04:58And when you get it, you feel on top of the world.
0:04:58 > 0:05:01Well, Radz, here you go.
0:05:01 > 0:05:04I think you won this fair and square today.
0:05:04 > 0:05:09- Aw, look at that!- Well done. Now get in the water and go and ride it in.
0:05:09 > 0:05:12- Let's go.- No, don't, don't. - No, I'll, I'll hurt myself.
