0:00:05 > 0:00:08This is Blue Peter, but mini.
0:00:08 > 0:00:11Expect epic adventures, mates,
0:00:11 > 0:00:13bakes, badges, pets,
0:00:13 > 0:00:15presenters and your post.
0:00:15 > 0:00:19We've only got five minutes so get ready for your Blue Peter adventure.
0:00:19 > 0:00:22Here on BP, we love taking on challenges involving
0:00:22 > 0:00:27white-knuckle super-speed and we love machines of pure power.
0:00:29 > 0:00:33And sometimes we like to take it a little slower.
0:00:33 > 0:00:35I'm going to be taking it slowly because of Henry.
0:00:35 > 0:00:38He wrote to Blue Peter to tell us that
0:00:38 > 0:00:42he loves really old cars and he got his passion from his grandpa
0:00:42 > 0:00:46Michael so I've come to the British Motor Museum to meet them.
0:00:46 > 0:00:49Now, I know you both love old cars and, look,
0:00:49 > 0:00:52- I can see you're excited, Henry. - Yeah!
0:00:52 > 0:00:54- You love old cars, don't you?- Yeah, I do.
0:00:54 > 0:00:57Because you can always have adventures on them and there
0:00:57 > 0:00:59is always something to do on them and
0:00:59 > 0:01:02me and Grandpa used to have something called garage time
0:01:02 > 0:01:05where we used to go into the garage and we used to fiddle about
0:01:05 > 0:01:09- with the cars and do work on them and play in them.- Fix them up?- Yeah.
0:01:09 > 0:01:11- You're a little mechanic, are you? - Yeah, yeah.- I love it.
0:01:11 > 0:01:15But Henry and his grandad don't just work on historic motors
0:01:15 > 0:01:18in their garage. They take them out on the open road.
0:01:18 > 0:01:21On the first Sunday of November, they join hundreds of other veteran
0:01:21 > 0:01:26car fans and take on a 16 mile adventure from London to Brighton.
0:01:26 > 0:01:29This year, there will be a new face taking part.
0:01:29 > 0:01:30Guess what, Lindsey?
0:01:30 > 0:01:34You're invited too. You're going to drive this.
0:01:35 > 0:01:37Say hello to the Thornycroft.
0:01:37 > 0:01:42Built in 1904, it's a staggering 112 years old.
0:01:42 > 0:01:43That's so old!
0:01:43 > 0:01:47When it was first driven, the Titanic wasn't even built.
0:01:49 > 0:01:52Engine running, let's take her for a test run.
0:01:52 > 0:01:53LINDSEY SQUEALS
0:01:53 > 0:01:55Oh, oh.
0:01:55 > 0:02:00This is fun but it's so much harder to drive than a modern car.
0:02:00 > 0:02:05The question now, how do I do over 60 miles on a normal road in that?
0:02:06 > 0:02:10It's Sunday morning, it's ridiculously early but
0:02:10 > 0:02:14I don't care because I'm about to take on my first veteran car rally.
0:02:14 > 0:02:17And this time, I've come prepared because if you look around
0:02:17 > 0:02:20you can see that everyone's dressed up, so, at least I look the part.
0:02:20 > 0:02:23- All right, Peter?- All set! - I'm excited. Let's do this.
0:02:23 > 0:02:26Peter knows these cars inside out and will be joining
0:02:26 > 0:02:28me along the way.
0:02:28 > 0:02:32The 60 mile route starts right in the heart of London.
0:02:32 > 0:02:37And we'll be following Henry and Michael at only 20mph.
0:02:37 > 0:02:39This could take a while.
0:02:39 > 0:02:43We're off, here we go. 60 miles, see you in Brighton.
0:02:47 > 0:02:51Now, I'm not a pro at driving this car. Luckily, Peter is.
0:02:51 > 0:02:53So he's going to get us out of London and then we'll do
0:02:53 > 0:02:55a bit of a swap.
0:02:55 > 0:02:58I can't wait to get out onto the open road and...
0:02:58 > 0:03:00We've stopped.
0:03:00 > 0:03:03We've gone for about two minutes and broken down.
0:03:03 > 0:03:06So, so far London to Brighton is just London to not even
0:03:06 > 0:03:12Buckingham Palace. We've got a leakage. Oh. Here we go, Brighton!
0:03:12 > 0:03:16OK, a few teething problems, laters, London.
0:03:16 > 0:03:18Oh, no.
0:03:19 > 0:03:21Everything OK?
0:03:22 > 0:03:25Clearly not. We've broken down again.
0:03:25 > 0:03:28So, our problem is this.
0:03:28 > 0:03:31That is not good.
0:03:31 > 0:03:35We've not even left London and we've sprung a water leak.
0:03:35 > 0:03:37Peter has to call in help and between us we try
0:03:37 > 0:03:39and keep the car topped up.
0:03:39 > 0:03:41Right, it's pretty much all in now.
0:03:41 > 0:03:44At least things are going more smoothly for Henry.
0:03:44 > 0:03:46Henry!
0:03:46 > 0:03:48How are you doing?
0:03:48 > 0:03:51Water in, hot chocolate in hand.
0:03:51 > 0:03:54- Hot, ready to go.- Ready to go.
0:03:54 > 0:04:00And go we do, we make it an incredible 15 miles from
0:04:00 > 0:04:03London and then we break down again.
0:04:03 > 0:04:06This time, it's serious so Martin the mechanic
0:04:06 > 0:04:09has arrived to see if he can save the day.
0:04:09 > 0:04:11So, we're on breakdown 152.
0:04:11 > 0:04:14Not really, but we have broken down a lot of times and I have now
0:04:14 > 0:04:17completely lost track of where Henry and his grandpa are.
0:04:17 > 0:04:21Will this drive be over before it's really begun?
0:04:23 > 0:04:26No chance. We are back, and you know what?
0:04:26 > 0:04:28We actually make some progress.
0:04:31 > 0:04:3430 miles in and it's the moment I've been waiting for.
0:04:34 > 0:04:39So, we're over halfway there and it's been decided that I am
0:04:39 > 0:04:42allowed to drive the car, aren't I?
0:04:42 > 0:04:44You're on driving.
0:04:48 > 0:04:49I'll be honest,
0:04:49 > 0:04:53being on an actual public road is nerve-racking to begin with.
0:04:53 > 0:04:55Why is it not going!
0:04:55 > 0:04:56Ah! Roundabout!
0:04:56 > 0:04:59You see, I told you veteran car driving was good fun.
0:04:59 > 0:05:02'But soon, I'm getting pretty confident.'
0:05:02 > 0:05:03Ha-ha!
0:05:05 > 0:05:07- We managed to overtake someone. - Brilliant.
0:05:08 > 0:05:12Yes, we break down again, obviously,
0:05:12 > 0:05:17but we're edging closer and closer to our destination.
0:05:17 > 0:05:21We can finally see Brighton.
0:05:21 > 0:05:25We've officially made it. Henry! We did it!
0:05:25 > 0:05:26THEY CHEER
0:05:26 > 0:05:30We are officially in Brighton. 60 miles!
0:05:30 > 0:05:34- Six hours, we've done it. We did, Henry!- Yeah!
0:05:34 > 0:05:38I've had a great time and it's amazing to think that these
0:05:38 > 0:05:40cars are still going strong.
0:05:40 > 0:05:43That's all down to the passion and dedication of people like Henry,
0:05:43 > 0:05:48his grandpa and Peter. Now, all I need to do is get home.
0:05:48 > 0:05:49And I'm taking the train.
