0:00:14 > 0:00:18We've only got five minutes, so get ready for your Blue Peter adventure.
0:00:23 > 0:00:26'This is Woburn Safari Park in Bedfordshire
0:00:26 > 0:00:28and over its 3,000 acres
0:00:28 > 0:00:31'you can find elephants, white rhinos and bears.'
0:00:31 > 0:00:34And they're amazing, but they're not why I'm here.
0:00:38 > 0:00:41I'm here to see what I think is one of the most stunning
0:00:41 > 0:00:45animals in the whole world - the Siberian tiger.
0:00:45 > 0:00:47And he is right there.
0:00:48 > 0:00:50'Beautiful but incredibly rare,
0:00:50 > 0:00:53'the Siberian tiger is under threat of extinction.
0:00:53 > 0:00:55'They are the rarest big cats in the world,
0:00:55 > 0:01:00'with only around 520 left in the wild.'
0:01:00 > 0:01:03So, in places like Woburn, the race is really on to try
0:01:03 > 0:01:05and save the Siberian tiger -
0:01:05 > 0:01:08which is why the next guys I'm about to meet are such great news.
0:01:10 > 0:01:12I think they're down this corridor here.
0:01:12 > 0:01:15- SHE GASPS - Look at them!
0:01:15 > 0:01:18Hey, guys!
0:01:18 > 0:01:21Wow, Mum is huge!
0:01:21 > 0:01:24Look at that amazing animal. Oh, look!
0:01:25 > 0:01:27'Back in October, four-year-old
0:01:27 > 0:01:29'tigress Minerva had two healthy cubs,
0:01:29 > 0:01:31'which is great news for the world's
0:01:31 > 0:01:34'tiger population and for their keeper, Chris.'
0:01:34 > 0:01:37Chris, tell us more about these beautiful Siberian tigers.
0:01:37 > 0:01:40Why are they so threatened as a species?
0:01:40 > 0:01:44Due to habitat loss and hunting for their coats
0:01:44 > 0:01:46and hunting for their body parts.
0:01:46 > 0:01:49So, it's really important that we're trying to conserve the species.
0:01:49 > 0:01:51It's really sad, isn't it?
0:01:51 > 0:01:52Why do you keep them in here
0:01:52 > 0:01:54and how come they're not running around outside?
0:01:54 > 0:01:57So, for their first 12 weeks, we need to keep them nice
0:01:57 > 0:01:59and safe until they've had their full injections.
0:01:59 > 0:02:03So we keep them nice and secure in this tiger house.
0:02:03 > 0:02:04'Then, in a few weeks' time,
0:02:04 > 0:02:08'the cubs will be released into this nine-acre reserve.
0:02:08 > 0:02:12'In the meantime, I get a chance to meet their dad, Elton.'
0:02:12 > 0:02:15Elton, are you ready? I'll let him out.
0:02:15 > 0:02:16Elton, come on.
0:02:18 > 0:02:19Here we go.
0:02:21 > 0:02:23Off he goes.
0:02:24 > 0:02:26Five weeks later, I'm back to see the cubs
0:02:26 > 0:02:29released into their new outdoor home for the very first time.
0:02:30 > 0:02:33- Hey, Chris. How are these guys getting on?- Yeah, really good.
0:02:33 > 0:02:35Yeah, doing really well now.
0:02:35 > 0:02:37You can see they've grown quite a lot, quite playful.
0:02:37 > 0:02:41They're weighing in at about 10 to 12 kilos at the moment.
0:02:41 > 0:02:43They're not feeding from Mum much now at all.
0:02:43 > 0:02:45They're mainly on their meat. So we're all ready to get them out.
0:02:45 > 0:02:48Have you given them the all-clear? Do you think they're ready to go?
0:02:48 > 0:02:52Yeah. All clear, already to go, so, out into their main enclosure today
0:02:52 > 0:02:55and, hopefully, they'll have a nice run round.
0:02:55 > 0:02:58'First, the cubs are removed from their den to a holding area.
0:03:00 > 0:03:02'And then, there's just one gate between them
0:03:02 > 0:03:04'and their new enclosure.'
0:03:04 > 0:03:06And guess who's got control of the gate.
0:03:06 > 0:03:09Me. I'm so excited for this.
0:03:09 > 0:03:11Three, two, one...
0:03:13 > 0:03:17They've both gone back inside. They're nervous.
0:03:17 > 0:03:19Oh, here we go. One's gone through.
0:03:19 > 0:03:21Oh, the little shy one's gone straight through.
0:03:21 > 0:03:22Look at her go!
0:03:25 > 0:03:28Oh, you can see she's a little bit nervous.
0:03:28 > 0:03:29Go on, follow Mum.
0:03:32 > 0:03:34'To get a closer look at how they're settling in,
0:03:34 > 0:03:36'I need to join Chris in the safety of the car.'
0:03:40 > 0:03:43So, what do you think the babies are feeling at this point?
0:03:43 > 0:03:45This is quite a big day for them, isn't it?
0:03:45 > 0:03:48Yeah, it's quite a big day for them. Obviously, in here now,
0:03:48 > 0:03:49there are completely new smells
0:03:49 > 0:03:51and things to look at and things to explore,
0:03:51 > 0:03:55so, they're going to be excited, but also confused.
0:03:55 > 0:03:57So, will they follow Mum around?
0:03:57 > 0:03:59Yeah, Mum should keep pretty good tabs on them.
0:03:59 > 0:04:01She won't want them to wander too far.
0:04:01 > 0:04:04We're going to start off gradually, so, a few hours a day
0:04:04 > 0:04:06out in the enclosure, back in the pens at night.
0:04:06 > 0:04:08So it's a massive learning curve.
0:04:08 > 0:04:11It doesn't just stop now, just being out for the first time today,
0:04:11 > 0:04:13but it means that over the next few weeks
0:04:13 > 0:04:15they've got loads to learn and see.
0:04:15 > 0:04:17- They seem to be trying to hunt each other as well.- Yeah.
0:04:17 > 0:04:20- They're messing about, aren't they? - Yeah, they really are.
0:04:20 > 0:04:22They're doing exactly what we hoped they would do.
0:04:22 > 0:04:25Everything baby tigers should be doing.
0:04:25 > 0:04:27What a moment to witness this.
0:04:27 > 0:04:32To see them out and about, playing, so happy in their new enclosure.
0:04:32 > 0:04:33It's really lovely.
0:04:38 > 0:04:41Oh, what an experience this has been. Do you know what?
0:04:41 > 0:04:46I've loved making this film, because there's only about 520
0:04:46 > 0:04:48Siberian tigers actually left in the wild,
0:04:48 > 0:04:52so these cubs that we've seen are so important for the tiger population.
0:04:52 > 0:04:54And, we've been a small part of their journey.
0:04:54 > 0:04:56It's pretty cool.
