0:00:19 > 0:00:22Ten Pieces is all about introducing a new listener
0:00:22 > 0:00:24to the beautiful world of classical music.
0:00:24 > 0:00:27So, as part of this, the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra are doing
0:00:27 > 0:00:30a really special concert right here in Manchester.
0:00:30 > 0:00:32Oh, and, um...
0:00:32 > 0:00:34I'm going to be playing with them...
0:00:34 > 0:00:35in just three days.
0:00:37 > 0:00:41Ten Pieces aims to inspire a whole new generation of music fans.
0:00:41 > 0:00:45They listen and then shake it up or re-version it in a creative way.
0:00:45 > 0:00:49I wonder what I'll be playing? Like the cello, maybe, or the violin!
0:00:49 > 0:00:51Or, hopefully - my favourite instrument,
0:00:51 > 0:00:53because of how it sounds, the bassoon!
0:00:55 > 0:00:56The bassoo...
0:00:56 > 0:00:58- Oh, all right, mate?- You all right?
0:00:58 > 0:00:59Where's the orchestra?
0:00:59 > 0:01:02- I'm playing with an orchestra. - It's just me today.
0:01:02 > 0:01:03Oh.
0:01:05 > 0:01:07- Well, what can you do with them? - Try this.
0:01:07 > 0:01:11MIXES/SCRATCHES BLUE PETER THEME TUNE
0:01:15 > 0:01:19'Meet four-time World Champion DJ Mr Switch, AKA Tony.
0:01:19 > 0:01:20'At the concert, he's performing
0:01:20 > 0:01:23'a piece called Concerto for Turntables and Orchestra,
0:01:23 > 0:01:27'composed by Gabriel Prokofiev and he wants me to join him
0:01:27 > 0:01:29'and scratch my way through three parts of it.'
0:01:31 > 0:01:32That was unbelievable.
0:01:32 > 0:01:35Let's start talking about the instrument itself -
0:01:35 > 0:01:37a piano has keys, a guitar has strings -
0:01:37 > 0:01:39what do we play on this instrument?
0:01:39 > 0:01:42Well, scratching consists of two ingredients -
0:01:42 > 0:01:43we have the turntable and the mixer.
0:01:43 > 0:01:46So the turntable goes backwards and forwards.
0:01:47 > 0:01:49Then the mixer has this thing called the fader -
0:01:49 > 0:01:51all it does is turn the sound on and off.
0:01:51 > 0:01:53Then we put those two parts together
0:01:53 > 0:01:56and we get all these different scratch techniques.
0:01:56 > 0:01:59'I need a masterclass, and quickly.
0:01:59 > 0:02:01'We start with the baby scratch.'
0:02:02 > 0:02:04- Shall I try it?- Give it a go.
0:02:04 > 0:02:06That's the baby scratch. OK.
0:02:06 > 0:02:08This is called the chirp.
0:02:10 > 0:02:12This is going to take a while, isn't it?!
0:02:12 > 0:02:15'I spent the next few hours getting to grips with some simple scratches.
0:02:15 > 0:02:17'I am loving it!'
0:02:18 > 0:02:20Barney is coping quite well at the moment.
0:02:20 > 0:02:22We've shown him the basics,
0:02:22 > 0:02:24but now I'm going to throw the whole piece at him
0:02:24 > 0:02:27and we're going to put everything all together. See how he does.
0:02:29 > 0:02:32'Tony takes me through the three scratches
0:02:32 > 0:02:33'he wants me to do in his performance.
0:02:33 > 0:02:35'The first is the string riff.
0:02:35 > 0:02:38'It's actually the most complicated. And it sounds like this...'
0:02:46 > 0:02:48Tony, it's so hard!
0:02:48 > 0:02:50'The second is called the scribble.'
0:02:57 > 0:02:59- Yeah, that's good. - That's element two.
0:02:59 > 0:03:01- There's a third element, though, right?- Yes.
0:03:01 > 0:03:04There's various different bits of percussion where I'll play...
0:03:04 > 0:03:07The DJ plays a part and then the percussion and brass reply.
0:03:07 > 0:03:11'And so the third is the call and response.
0:03:14 > 0:03:15'Now I know what I've got to do,
0:03:15 > 0:03:18'we spend the next few hours getting our performance up to...
0:03:18 > 0:03:19'scratch.'
0:03:19 > 0:03:21Dum-dum, tsch, da dum-de-dum, tsch.
0:03:22 > 0:03:25'Two days later and it's the final rehearsals.
0:03:25 > 0:03:29'One last chance to practise my new skills. And I've got company.'
0:03:29 > 0:03:31This is it.
0:03:31 > 0:03:35I've now got to play this piece of music, or scratch with an orchestra.
0:03:35 > 0:03:37'Tony gets us off to a good start.'
0:03:40 > 0:03:43'But when it gets to my part, the pressure gets to me.'
0:03:43 > 0:03:45Ah, no! No volume!
0:03:47 > 0:03:51'I left my fader down - I cannot do that on the big day.'
0:03:51 > 0:03:53If you make a mistake, you can't correct it.
0:03:53 > 0:03:55It's like, "Oh, no, I missed it!"
0:03:55 > 0:03:57You've got to move to the next one. I need to get that right.
0:03:57 > 0:04:00'And before I know it, rehearsals are over.'
0:04:00 > 0:04:03Brilliant, well done.
0:04:04 > 0:04:06It's showtime.
0:04:06 > 0:04:09Please welcome Barney Harwood!
0:04:09 > 0:04:11APPLAUSE
0:04:11 > 0:04:14'I have to try and remember everything Tony has taught me.
0:04:14 > 0:04:16'First up is the string riff.'
0:04:27 > 0:04:30'I just about do it and my nerves settle.
0:04:30 > 0:04:32'Next, the scribble.'
0:04:42 > 0:04:45'This one I find easier - I'm feeling good now.
0:04:45 > 0:04:47'Finally, the call and response.'
0:04:53 > 0:04:57'Nailed it! And now I am really enjoying myself.'
