0:00:08 > 0:00:12Expect epic adventures, makes, bakes, badges, pets,

0:00:12 > 0:00:15presenters and your post.

0:00:15 > 0:00:19We've only got five minutes, so get ready for your Blue Peter adventure.

0:00:19 > 0:00:22Here at Blue Peter, we're famous for having challenges,

0:00:22 > 0:00:26badges and even a steam locomotive.

0:00:26 > 0:00:29Yep, you heard me right.

0:00:29 > 0:00:32The Blue Peter locomotive is the last of its type in the world

0:00:32 > 0:00:35and dates back to the 1940s.

0:00:35 > 0:00:40But the years have taken their toll and many of its parts need some TLC.

0:00:40 > 0:00:42Including repairing its boiler,

0:00:42 > 0:00:45mending its cylinders

0:00:45 > 0:00:47and giving it a new lick of paint.

0:00:47 > 0:00:50So, two years ago, Barney and I helped move Blue Peter

0:00:50 > 0:00:54to its new home in Crewe, where it could be lovingly restored.

0:00:56 > 0:00:58It was a tricky journey which involved being

0:00:58 > 0:01:01transported on a low-loading lorry.

0:01:02 > 0:01:06The journey took hours and proved a little bit too much for me.

0:01:06 > 0:01:0990 miles later, the locomotive arrived at its new home

0:01:09 > 0:01:12and all that was left to do was get it into the engine shed.

0:01:12 > 0:01:14And there's one man they called for the job.

0:01:14 > 0:01:18- BOXING BELL RINGS - Here we go.

0:01:18 > 0:01:21HE GRUNTS

0:01:21 > 0:01:22Radzi!

0:01:22 > 0:01:25Peter, I've got my hands full here!

0:01:25 > 0:01:29Radzi! We use this to push it!

0:01:29 > 0:01:32HE GRUNTS

0:01:32 > 0:01:34Well, we'll do it Peter's way.

0:01:38 > 0:01:41Blue Peter locomotive, all clear.

0:01:45 > 0:01:47With Blue Peter finally in the shed,

0:01:47 > 0:01:51the team could begin the restoration work, but that was going to take

0:01:51 > 0:01:55a very long time, so it's over to you, Linds.

0:01:55 > 0:01:58As you can see, work is well and truly underway,

0:01:58 > 0:02:01and today is a big day for our friend here because she's

0:02:01 > 0:02:04having work done on the parts that actually get her moving -

0:02:04 > 0:02:05the boiler.

0:02:05 > 0:02:08So it's time for Barney and Radzi to stand aside

0:02:08 > 0:02:09and let the big guns take over.

0:02:12 > 0:02:13Talking about me.

0:02:14 > 0:02:17This restoration is massive.

0:02:17 > 0:02:19The locomotive will be completely taken apart,

0:02:19 > 0:02:23repaired and put back together piece by piece.

0:02:23 > 0:02:26Not one nut or bolt will be left untouched.

0:02:27 > 0:02:29We just need the boss to arrive now.

0:02:29 > 0:02:32Who is that?!

0:02:32 > 0:02:34This is Steve. He's in charge.

0:02:34 > 0:02:37If there's a man to get the Blue Peter locomotive

0:02:37 > 0:02:39back up to speed, it's him.

0:02:40 > 0:02:42So, Steve, it's good to be here.

0:02:42 > 0:02:44What has been going on with our locomotive?

0:02:44 > 0:02:46It's a long, slow process.

0:02:46 > 0:02:50It's taken a lot of refurbishment to all the individual components.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53And what are we going to be doing today? How can I get involved?

0:02:53 > 0:02:55Well, today, we're going to be making an important

0:02:55 > 0:02:58piece of the boiler, which is the copper firebox.

0:02:58 > 0:03:01If only we had a finished version so we could make it really clear

0:03:01 > 0:03:04- to the viewers what you mean by that.- Follow me.

0:03:04 > 0:03:05What a guy!

0:03:09 > 0:03:11Steve, what exactly have we got here?

0:03:11 > 0:03:16- What we've got here is a copper fire box. Currently it's upside down.- OK.

0:03:16 > 0:03:20It would normally be the other way up and inside you'd have the coal.

0:03:20 > 0:03:23The coal heats up. On the outside there's water.

0:03:23 > 0:03:27- It turns it to steam and that's what makes the steam locomotive go.- Ah!

0:03:27 > 0:03:31Normally, that fire box is hidden inside the casing

0:03:31 > 0:03:33like this locomotive here.

0:03:33 > 0:03:35Oh, so that's kind of the skeleton of the boiler

0:03:35 > 0:03:38- that will be inside the locomotive? - Correct.- I've got it.

0:03:38 > 0:03:40How exactly am I going to be helping today?

0:03:40 > 0:03:43- You're going to making one of these plates.- Really?- Yes.

0:03:43 > 0:03:47- Do you trust me?- Yes.- Hesitation!

0:03:47 > 0:03:48Well, if I'm going to work on the boiler,

0:03:48 > 0:03:51I'd best get my BOILER suit on.

0:03:51 > 0:03:54Get it? No? Never mind.

0:03:54 > 0:03:56Time to get this loco back on track.

0:03:56 > 0:04:00I need a serious bit of kit. Something that can bend metal.

0:04:00 > 0:04:03I need a massive hammer!

0:04:04 > 0:04:06- Heavy, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:04:07 > 0:04:11My job is to bash this copper plate into shape around the mould below.

0:04:11 > 0:04:14Hold it there. Don't go...

0:04:15 > 0:04:17OK.

0:04:17 > 0:04:20- Let it bounce, yeah? Don't go mad. Don't hurt yourself.- Fun!

0:04:20 > 0:04:23- There you go.- GRRR!

0:04:23 > 0:04:25- That's it. - Quite good for getting anger out.

0:04:25 > 0:04:26After a quick practice,

0:04:26 > 0:04:29it's time to heat up the copper using blowtorches.

0:04:29 > 0:04:32There we go.

0:04:32 > 0:04:34When the metal is literally red-hot,

0:04:34 > 0:04:37it's soft enough to mould into shape.

0:04:37 > 0:04:40And that's where I come in. Do not try this at home.

0:04:40 > 0:04:42Yeah? Oh, I'm scared.

0:04:44 > 0:04:48It might look like fun, but it's vital we get this right.

0:04:48 > 0:04:50This is the actual copper plate that will

0:04:50 > 0:04:52sit in the boiler for years to come.

0:04:56 > 0:04:58'After some impressive hammering...'

0:04:58 > 0:05:00Got the job!

0:05:00 > 0:05:04'..the guys let me loose with the blowtorch.

0:05:04 > 0:05:06'What a day!'

0:05:07 > 0:05:10And then it's over to the team to finish off the moulding.

0:05:12 > 0:05:15Now I can see why restoring this locomotive

0:05:15 > 0:05:17is literally going to take years.

0:05:17 > 0:05:19Steve, that was a job well done.

0:05:19 > 0:05:22Yeah, about halfway through the repair but still a long way to go.

0:05:22 > 0:05:28Well, I cannot wait until the Blue Peter locomotive is back on track...

0:05:28 > 0:05:31You're sending out all the right signals, Steve.

0:05:31 > 0:05:33Hope you don't run out of steam!

0:05:37 > 0:05:39So there we have it.

0:05:39 > 0:05:42It's going to be a while yet until the Blue Peter locomotive

0:05:42 > 0:05:45is back up and running in all her glory and I can't wait.

0:05:45 > 0:05:48And it's great to know she's got such a fab team

0:05:48 > 0:05:52working really hard on her, especially Steve. What a guy!
