0:00:12 > 0:00:13badges, pets,

0:00:13 > 0:00:15presenters and your post.

0:00:15 > 0:00:19We've only got five minutes, so get ready for your Blue Peter adventure.

0:00:21 > 0:00:26RADZI: The BT Tower, built from 13,000 tonnes of concrete.

0:00:26 > 0:00:30It's one of the most iconic shapes on the London skyline.

0:00:30 > 0:00:35At a massive 189 metres, it was once the capital's tallest tower.

0:00:36 > 0:00:38First opened in 1965,

0:00:38 > 0:00:42the tower is still a major television broadcasting hub.

0:00:42 > 0:00:43In fact, check this out,

0:00:43 > 0:00:5095% of UK television passes through the airwaves from here.

0:00:50 > 0:00:53Yep, the info's coming thick and fast, people.

0:00:53 > 0:00:54And here's some more for you.

0:00:54 > 0:01:01In 2009, the tower had a 360-degree screen installed at the top.

0:01:01 > 0:01:03To find out more, I'm heading up there...

0:01:03 > 0:01:08And I'm doing so in one of the fastest lifts in the country,

0:01:08 > 0:01:09which is great news!

0:01:10 > 0:01:13With it being such a long journey all the way to the top,

0:01:13 > 0:01:17I thought I'd share with you some of my favourite lift facts.

0:01:17 > 0:01:19So, there was one time... BELL

0:01:19 > 0:01:22- ..Lindsey, Barney and me got into a lift...- Doors opening.

0:01:24 > 0:01:26That's annoying.

0:01:26 > 0:01:29The man who looks after the tower screens is Wayne.

0:01:30 > 0:01:33- Wayne, lovely to meet you. - Nice to meet you, Radzi.

0:01:33 > 0:01:36What do you think it is that makes the BT Tower so special?

0:01:36 > 0:01:38It's very much in use. It's very much an operational building.

0:01:38 > 0:01:41It's a hub for the UK telecommunications.

0:01:41 > 0:01:43I've noticed a screen at the very top.

0:01:43 > 0:01:45What is that for?

0:01:45 > 0:01:47We actually know it as the Infoband.

0:01:47 > 0:01:51It's used to celebrate UK landmark events.

0:01:51 > 0:01:53And why would it need changing or replacing?

0:01:53 > 0:01:55So, the original one was up there for seven years.

0:01:55 > 0:01:57As you can imagine, being at that height, it gets

0:01:57 > 0:02:01battered by the wind, rain, snow, so it was time for it to be replaced.

0:02:01 > 0:02:03How can I help?

0:02:03 > 0:02:04You're going to come along with us now

0:02:04 > 0:02:06and install one of the new Infoband panels.

0:02:06 > 0:02:08So, kitting you up, full harness,

0:02:08 > 0:02:11getting you over the side with the riggers to install one.

0:02:11 > 0:02:13Over the side of...

0:02:13 > 0:02:15..this incredibly tall building?

0:02:15 > 0:02:16Very much so.

0:02:17 > 0:02:21We begin by heading back down to somewhere called the plant room.

0:02:21 > 0:02:24Brilliant! I get to use that lift again.

0:02:24 > 0:02:26Wayne, I do love the plant room.

0:02:26 > 0:02:28In fact, my top ten plant rooms of all time...

0:02:28 > 0:02:30- Sorry, Radzi, we're actually here now.- Are we?- Yep.

0:02:30 > 0:02:31- BELL - Doors opening.

0:02:31 > 0:02:33Oh. That's really annoying.

0:02:35 > 0:02:39The Infoband is actually made up of lots of small screens

0:02:39 > 0:02:42that work together to create a giant image.

0:02:42 > 0:02:45These all need installing separately,

0:02:45 > 0:02:47and it's here that they're prepared.

0:02:47 > 0:02:48- You hold that underneath.- Yep.

0:02:48 > 0:02:50That on top.

0:02:50 > 0:02:52Hold it right there and just crank it up.

0:02:52 > 0:02:54- OK.- There we go.

0:02:54 > 0:02:58Each one of these bolts is holding the screen together above the city.

0:02:58 > 0:03:01So I'm making sure I get this right.

0:03:01 > 0:03:02You might want to go a little quicker,

0:03:02 > 0:03:05because there's thousands and thousands more to go.

0:03:05 > 0:03:07- Thousands?- Thousands.

0:03:07 > 0:03:09OK...

0:03:09 > 0:03:10Once a panel is put together,

0:03:10 > 0:03:14it's time to fix it to the side of the building.

0:03:14 > 0:03:18OK, Radzi, we're on level T-37, level 37 of the tower now.

0:03:18 > 0:03:21I'm afraid this is the part where I hand you over to the riggers,

0:03:21 > 0:03:23who will take care of you,

0:03:23 > 0:03:27- and they will let you install the panel that we just raised up.- OK.

0:03:27 > 0:03:28- That's it down there? - That's the one.

0:03:28 > 0:03:31- That's the one they pulled up now. - Wait till you see this.

0:03:31 > 0:03:36I'm nearly 190 metres above the ground.

0:03:36 > 0:03:37When I climb over the edge,

0:03:37 > 0:03:41I need to clip my harness to the barrier to make sure I'm safe.

0:03:43 > 0:03:44That goes on there.

0:03:44 > 0:03:46I'm about to help out on a building project

0:03:46 > 0:03:49above one of the busiest cities in the world.

0:03:49 > 0:03:51There's no pretty way to do this.

0:03:52 > 0:03:56I've got the best seat in the house, all thanks to BT.

0:03:56 > 0:04:00Wow. Where my feet are, I can see the road.

0:04:00 > 0:04:04And those people look about the size of very small ants.

0:04:04 > 0:04:07But I'm not here to admire the view. I've got a job to do.

0:04:07 > 0:04:10Let's get this panel into place.

0:04:10 > 0:04:13OK, Radzi, so, that's perfect. Got both your attachments on there.

0:04:13 > 0:04:15- I'm safe?- You're perfectly safe. - Good!

0:04:15 > 0:04:17We're going to winch it up now, into position.

0:04:17 > 0:04:18We're going to winch it up? OK.

0:04:19 > 0:04:23First up, I need to secure the bolts that hold the screen.

0:04:25 > 0:04:28I'm not nearly as fast as these boys.

0:04:28 > 0:04:30But I want to make sure,

0:04:30 > 0:04:34if I'm putting a bolt into the tower, that it ain't going anywhere.

0:04:34 > 0:04:37I then attach an extra safety cable, just to be sure.

0:04:42 > 0:04:45This screen will be seen by millions for years to come,

0:04:45 > 0:04:49so it's probably best if I leave the experts to finish the job.

0:04:49 > 0:04:53- Wayne, thank you so much. - It's been a pleasure.

0:04:53 > 0:04:55And I guess all that's left to do is take the lift down.

0:04:55 > 0:04:58Wayne, did I mention to you that I've got some great facts about...?

0:04:58 > 0:04:59Do you know what, Radzi?

0:04:59 > 0:05:01I'm going to grab the next one, if that's OK.

0:05:01 > 0:05:02Wayne. Wayne, Wayne?

0:05:04 > 0:05:08But I want to see the results of the team's handiwork,

0:05:08 > 0:05:10and I know just the place.

0:05:10 > 0:05:13It's a few weeks later, and we are back in London.

0:05:13 > 0:05:15The only thing is, I can't see the tower from here.

0:05:15 > 0:05:17We need a better view.

0:05:17 > 0:05:21I'm heading to the rooftop of the BBC's West 1 building

0:05:21 > 0:05:23for a very special view.

0:05:25 > 0:05:30Now we just need to find out if all 396 of the panels are working,

0:05:30 > 0:05:33including the one that I helped to put in place.

0:05:37 > 0:05:39Yeah! Look at that!

0:05:41 > 0:05:46The Blue Peter ship on the Infoband of the BT Tower!

0:05:46 > 0:05:47And that, right there,

0:05:47 > 0:05:50is the highest Blue Peter badge in the country.

0:05:53 > 0:05:55Join in every Thursday on CBBC.
