0:00:06 > 0:00:09This is Blue Peter, but mini.

0:00:09 > 0:00:11Expect epic adventures,

0:00:11 > 0:00:13mates, bakes, badges,

0:00:13 > 0:00:15pets, presenters, and your post.

0:00:15 > 0:00:19We've only got five minutes, so get ready for your Blue Peter adventure.

0:00:21 > 0:00:25Since 1824, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution

0:00:25 > 0:00:29has saved more than 140,000 lives.

0:00:29 > 0:00:33Their volunteers are constantly on standby around the country

0:00:33 > 0:00:34to save those in trouble.

0:00:36 > 0:00:40I've come to Beaumaris Lifeboat Station in Anglesey,

0:00:40 > 0:00:44to learn exactly what it takes to be part of a top life-saving crew.

0:00:44 > 0:00:47And you know what, I am so excited for this.

0:00:48 > 0:00:52Blue Peter has helped raise money for lifeboats all over the UK,

0:00:52 > 0:00:57and one of those was Blue Peter 2, launched here at Beaumaris in 1967.

0:00:58 > 0:01:00- Guy, how are you? - Lindsey, nice to meet you.

0:01:00 > 0:01:02Well, it's great to be here, I'm excited.

0:01:02 > 0:01:05So, Blue Peter 2, where is the old girl?

0:01:05 > 0:01:07Er... 50 years is a long time.

0:01:07 > 0:01:09We don't have her any more, unfortunately.

0:01:09 > 0:01:12- Oh, right. - We've got a new one, though!

0:01:12 > 0:01:16Blue Peter 2's replacement is a state-of-the-art modern lifeboat

0:01:16 > 0:01:20and it's this I'm going to experience.

0:01:20 > 0:01:23To celebrate our 50 years, we're going to have a big sea demonstration

0:01:23 > 0:01:25for the public, and I want you to come with us.

0:01:26 > 0:01:29I'm going to be part of the crew that showcase

0:01:29 > 0:01:31what they can do in a demo rescue,

0:01:31 > 0:01:35so it probably makes sense for me to learn what happens on a lifeboat call-out.

0:01:37 > 0:01:38ALARM WAILS

0:01:38 > 0:01:40- Right, the boys are getting on.- OK.

0:01:40 > 0:01:42- So do you want to follow them up? - OK.

0:01:44 > 0:01:46The lifeboat is kept on board a trailer,

0:01:46 > 0:01:50so it can be pushed into the water for the quickest possible start.

0:01:52 > 0:01:53This is so cool!

0:01:55 > 0:01:56Whoo!

0:01:56 > 0:01:59Once we're at sea, I'm thrown straight in at the deep end.

0:01:59 > 0:02:02So there's going to be a dummy in the water,

0:02:02 > 0:02:05- and I want you to navigate me to go and pick him up.- How?

0:02:05 > 0:02:07- So, you've got a GPS here.- Yeah.

0:02:07 > 0:02:09And Colin is going to put the position in,

0:02:09 > 0:02:12and I want you to read the bearing and the distance to me.

0:02:12 > 0:02:13Let's do this!

0:02:14 > 0:02:15Whoo!

0:02:18 > 0:02:21Right now, the water is calm and the weather is fine,

0:02:21 > 0:02:25but crews like these have to attend emergencies in storms,

0:02:25 > 0:02:27often in the pitch-black.

0:02:27 > 0:02:29So, communication is vital.

0:02:31 > 0:02:35- What's the distance? - Distance, 0.25 miles.- OK.

0:02:35 > 0:02:36I can see him.

0:02:36 > 0:02:39When we reach the dummy, I need to let the helmsman, or driver,

0:02:39 > 0:02:42know exactly what I'm doing.

0:02:42 > 0:02:44- Come on!- Argh!

0:02:44 > 0:02:45Contact!

0:02:47 > 0:02:48We then pull the dummy to safety.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53He is so heavy! Urgh...

0:02:54 > 0:02:57With things going so well and with calm conditions,

0:02:57 > 0:03:00the crew make the offer of a lifetime.

0:03:00 > 0:03:02- We're going to head back to station now.- Uh-huh.

0:03:02 > 0:03:05- Before we do, would you like to have a little drive?- I'd love to!

0:03:05 > 0:03:07- Can I?- Yeah, come and give it a go. - Do you trust me?- Yeah!

0:03:10 > 0:03:12This is such a privilege,

0:03:12 > 0:03:15and is only possible because our crew is so experienced

0:03:15 > 0:03:18and because I'm going at a slow speed.

0:03:18 > 0:03:19Whoo!

0:03:24 > 0:03:27- I loved that! I think I've found my calling.- Definitely.

0:03:27 > 0:03:30I'm going to be a lifeboat driver! That was amazing.

0:03:30 > 0:03:31Listen, we've done the training,

0:03:31 > 0:03:34I feel like I know what I need to work on, I know what we're doing,

0:03:34 > 0:03:37and now tomorrow I've just got to be part of the crew and go for it.

0:03:37 > 0:03:39- You ready for tomorrow?- I am ready. Let's do it!

0:03:45 > 0:03:48So, here we are - the morning of Day Two,

0:03:48 > 0:03:52and I don't know if you can hear or see, but it is SO windy,

0:03:52 > 0:03:54and that does make me a bit nervous

0:03:54 > 0:03:56because I want to do Blue Peter proud,

0:03:56 > 0:03:58and do it for the badge.

0:03:58 > 0:04:01For our demonstration, we're going to head out

0:04:01 > 0:04:04and rescue a dummy as quickly as possible.

0:04:04 > 0:04:07The crowd have come to see a slick crew in action.

0:04:09 > 0:04:11Let's go.

0:04:11 > 0:04:12We're out onto the water,

0:04:12 > 0:04:16and my first job is to find the location of our casualty.

0:04:41 > 0:04:44Yesterday's training is really paying off.

0:04:44 > 0:04:46I'm so glad I got to practise this.

0:04:54 > 0:04:56MUSIC: Ride Of The Valkyries by Richard Wagner

0:04:56 > 0:04:59If a casualty needs to get to hospital quickly,

0:04:59 > 0:05:02the RNLI sometimes has to call in air support.

0:05:04 > 0:05:07The coastguard search and rescue are about to demonstrate

0:05:07 > 0:05:09how they would take someone from the water.

0:05:11 > 0:05:14Lowering a member of the team down on a winch, they're able to attach

0:05:14 > 0:05:18themselves to the person in trouble and lift them straight on board.

0:05:21 > 0:05:25It happens in a matter of minutes, and is incredible to witness.
