5:00:42 > 5:00:46Omar, how did Uggie get into skateboarding?

5:00:46 > 5:00:49I had another dog, he used to skateboard all the time.

5:00:49 > 5:00:53So Uggie would be watching him and then I got him on a skateboard,

5:00:57 > 5:00:59- He has been skating ever since. - Sweet.

5:01:42 > 5:01:45It's a skateboard, dude, get on it.

5:01:45 > 5:01:48Hold on, I don't get it.

5:01:48 > 5:01:50Fine, I'll send Omar in.

5:04:14 > 5:04:17the tallest bridges in the UK.

5:04:17 > 5:04:21We know Helen has been braving sub-zero temperatures in Antarctica,

5:04:21 > 5:04:25but you've probably noticed the weather here has been getting cold.

5:04:25 > 5:04:29Tonight is set to be as low as minus four in some places in the UK.

5:04:29 > 5:04:33Earlier this week, Wiltshire in the south of England saw some snow.

5:04:33 > 5:04:36To help see you through these chilly winter months

5:04:36 > 5:04:40we decided to enlist the skills of top inventor Mark Champkins.

5:04:40 > 5:04:44Here he is on Blue Peter last year when Helen set him his challenge.

5:04:44 > 5:04:46Things are getting cold, a lot of our viewers

5:04:46 > 5:04:49will be waiting at bus-stops, cold and bored.

5:04:49 > 5:04:53- Can you create something for them? - I'll do my best.

5:04:53 > 5:04:56We asked Pollyanna Woodward from The Gadget Show

5:04:56 > 5:04:59to catch up with Mark and find out

5:04:59 > 5:05:01whether he'd risen to Helen's challenge.

5:05:04 > 5:05:06The Science Museum in London,

5:05:06 > 5:05:09home to some of the world's greatest innovations.

5:05:10 > 5:05:14Ideas man Mark Champkins is the museum's resident inventor,

5:05:14 > 5:05:17but has he managed to come up with any products to keep you warm

5:05:17 > 5:05:21and stop you getting bored at the bus-stop this winter?

5:05:22 > 5:05:27Mark, you've had a little while to think about the challenge,

5:05:27 > 5:05:30- have you come up with many ideas? - I have, lots of ideas, actually.

5:05:30 > 5:05:32Winter problem number one -

5:05:32 > 5:05:35do you love playing with your touch-screen phone,

5:05:35 > 5:05:37but want keep your hands warm?

5:05:37 > 5:05:43Here's Mark's solution - a pair gloves with easy access fingertips.

5:05:43 > 5:05:46I have to get these on and give them a trial.

5:05:46 > 5:05:49Look at that, that's great.

5:05:49 > 5:05:51Pop your finger out if you need to pinch and zoom.

5:05:54 > 5:06:00That's not all, Mark has invented a bonus feature for your bus pass.

5:06:00 > 5:06:02A little transparent pocket on your glove,

5:06:02 > 5:06:06so you don't need to root round in your bag to find it.

5:06:06 > 5:06:11This will save me a good four or five minutes every time I use it.

5:06:11 > 5:06:14Toasty.

5:06:14 > 5:06:16Winter problem number two -

5:06:16 > 5:06:19how do you choose between...

5:06:19 > 5:06:21..cool tunes...

5:06:21 > 5:06:23..and warm ears?

5:06:23 > 5:06:29Mark's solution is woolly earmuffs, with inbuilt headphones.

5:06:29 > 5:06:31They look very warm.

5:06:31 > 5:06:35Yes, you can listen to your music and keep your ears warm.

5:06:35 > 5:06:38But for perfect beats you need a perfect fit.

5:06:38 > 5:06:42We'll scan your ear, so I can get a model on the laptop.

5:06:42 > 5:06:46Mark places positioning targets all over Pollyanna's ear,

5:06:46 > 5:06:49so the scanner can make a 3D map of her head.

5:06:49 > 5:06:54The red laser bounces off her skin and into sensors in the scanner.

5:06:54 > 5:06:57We've measured your ears, I know exactly where they are!

5:06:57 > 5:07:00- And I've modelled them here. - So when I put these on,

5:07:00 > 5:07:03the positioning of the earphones will be on my ear.

5:07:03 > 5:07:07Perfect. The world's first pair of perfectly-fitting earmuffs.

5:07:07 > 5:07:09Winter problem number three -

5:07:09 > 5:07:13have you ever been waiting for a bus to find it drives straight past you?

5:07:13 > 5:07:16Mark's solution, a light-emitting ring,

5:07:16 > 5:07:19so you can be spotted even on a dark winter morning.

5:07:19 > 5:07:24- It lights up and the bus driver can see you're waiting.- It glows!

5:07:24 > 5:07:26I've done some stuff on my laptop and modelled it

5:07:26 > 5:07:29and we can have it printed.

5:07:29 > 5:07:33He's using a 3D printer, which piles up 947 layers of quick-drying resin.

5:07:33 > 5:07:36Each layer is thinner than a human hair.

5:07:37 > 5:07:39These are the two halves we made before.

5:07:39 > 5:07:44This circuit is like a bike light, a little LED,

5:07:44 > 5:07:48and this will shine through the top when you push the button.

5:07:48 > 5:07:51This circuit should sit nicely in here.

5:07:51 > 5:07:53Just snap that together, like that.

5:07:53 > 5:07:55So, there you have it,

5:07:55 > 5:07:57three brilliant new products to keep you warm

5:07:57 > 5:08:00and entertained on those dark winter mornings.

5:08:00 > 5:08:03Mark, these inventions are absolutely fantastic!

5:08:03 > 5:08:07- You have cracked Helen's challenge. - I hope so, thank you.

5:08:09 > 5:08:12It's amazing how these solutions can come from

5:08:12 > 5:08:14quite simple problems, but they're really effective.

5:08:14 > 5:08:16These are the warmest headphones I've ever worn.

5:08:16 > 5:08:19Music's rubbish, but it is not plugged in. What about your stuff?

5:08:19 > 5:08:21Very beautiful. The bus pass

5:08:21 > 5:08:24that just slips in there,

5:08:24 > 5:08:25very cosy,

5:08:25 > 5:08:27and this beautiful accessory here.

5:08:27 > 5:08:29Yes, the Blue Peter light-up ring.

5:08:29 > 5:08:31If we get the lights down, we can see.

5:08:31 > 5:08:34This is supposed to attract the attention of the bus driver

5:08:34 > 5:08:37while you wait at the bus-stop on dark, wintry mornings.

5:08:37 > 5:08:40So cool, I love it. I wish I was an inventor.

5:08:40 > 5:08:44And if it's still too cold to go outside, there's always loads

5:08:44 > 5:08:47to keep you busy on the Blue Peter website.

5:09:27 > 5:09:31..or brush up on your footy skills, with Keepy Uppy?

5:09:32 > 5:09:36Head over to the CBBC website and click on Blue Peter.

5:09:36 > 5:09:38Hours of fun.

5:09:38 > 5:09:41If you are constantly being asked to tidy your room

5:09:41 > 5:09:43you may think it is the job that never ends.

5:09:43 > 5:09:46If you are anything like me, it gets messy as fast as you tidy it.

5:09:46 > 5:09:47I'm such a boy.

5:09:47 > 5:09:51For over 100 years, the painters of the Forth Bridge in Scotland

5:09:51 > 5:09:53had exactly the same feeling.

5:09:53 > 5:09:55It is so large that, ever since it was built,

5:09:55 > 5:09:58it has always had someone painting it.

5:09:58 > 5:10:01But this year, for the first time, that's all changed.

5:10:04 > 5:10:075,000 workers risked their lives to build it.

5:10:10 > 5:10:12It took seven years to complete.

5:10:15 > 5:10:18But then came the real challenge -

5:10:18 > 5:10:22painting its massive 1.5 mile expanse.

5:10:22 > 5:10:27They said it was the job that would never end, but they were wrong.

5:10:27 > 5:10:29This is the Forth Rail Bridge in Scotland,

5:10:29 > 5:10:33and I am here to celebrate the scaffolding finally coming down

5:10:33 > 5:10:36on the world's longest-running paint job.

5:10:36 > 5:10:39As you can see, I am all kitted out. I have got my gloves,

5:10:39 > 5:10:43safety goggles and high-visibility suit, all to make me completely safe,

5:10:43 > 5:10:45because I am about to walk across

5:10:45 > 5:10:48one of the biggest construction sites in the UK.

5:10:49 > 5:10:52The Forth Rail Bridge was built across the Firth of Forth

5:10:52 > 5:10:54in the late 1800s,

5:10:54 > 5:10:57to connect the capital city of Edinburgh on the south side,

5:10:57 > 5:11:01to Fife on the north side.

5:11:01 > 5:11:05It spans the same length as 24 full-sized football pitches

5:11:05 > 5:11:09and project manager John has been working on it for 12 years.

5:11:09 > 5:11:12It is not every day you walk under a train to go to work, is it?

5:11:12 > 5:11:15It is a fairly unique experience.

5:11:15 > 5:11:19I imagine this bit of the walk for the painters and builders,

5:11:19 > 5:11:24it is a bit like a tunnel at Wembley, as they walk onto the pitch

5:11:24 > 5:11:26to the cheers of the adoring fans.

5:11:26 > 5:11:30It is their walk to work, the only way in and out

5:11:30 > 5:11:33and they do it every day.

5:11:38 > 5:11:41With 200 trains passing over every day,

5:11:41 > 5:11:44it is vital this huge steel beast remains rust free,

5:11:44 > 5:11:47to keep it as strong as possible.

5:11:47 > 5:11:51The best way to protect metal from rust is to paint it.

5:11:51 > 5:11:54Just looking at the structure as we are walking past,

5:11:54 > 5:11:56anybody who has helped their dad painting

5:11:56 > 5:11:59will appreciate how big a job this is.

5:12:01 > 5:12:03For over a century,

5:12:03 > 5:12:07teams of workers have fought to keep the bridge in top condition,

5:12:07 > 5:12:11by painting it day-in and day-out, year after year.

5:12:11 > 5:12:14All the while, trains were passing while the work was carrying on?

5:12:14 > 5:12:17It is a live bridge, it is not a museum piece,

5:12:17 > 5:12:18has been here for 121 years

5:12:18 > 5:12:21and will be here for an awful lot longer.

5:12:23 > 5:12:26This never-ending job is finally finishing

5:12:26 > 5:12:29and all because of this unlikely hero -

5:12:29 > 5:12:30a can of paint.

5:12:30 > 5:12:32Here is the paint.

5:12:32 > 5:12:35The technical name is glass flake epoxy paint

5:12:35 > 5:12:38and it is the toughest paint in the world.

5:12:38 > 5:12:42It has thousands of microscopic glass flakes in each can

5:12:42 > 5:12:45which lock together and form overlapping layers.

5:12:45 > 5:12:47Just three coats of this bad boy

5:12:47 > 5:12:50are strong enough to last for up to 25 years.

5:12:53 > 5:12:57It was all delivered in pots like this. They were all delivered,

5:12:57 > 5:13:00put into a spray container, but this is a pot of paint...

5:13:00 > 5:13:03- SIREN SOUNDS - ..that's been used on the bridge.

5:13:03 > 5:13:06And they are alarmed as well.

5:13:06 > 5:13:09If anyone is picked them up that is not allowed to, the alarm goes off.

5:13:09 > 5:13:12We better put that down and, hopefully, we won't get told off.

5:13:12 > 5:13:16No, that's cos there's a train coming. I'm only kidding.

5:13:19 > 5:13:23It has taken the 1,500 workers nearly ten years to paint the bridge

5:13:23 > 5:13:26with this new super-strong paint.

5:13:26 > 5:13:29It has been a truly massive operation.

5:13:29 > 5:13:336.5 million of these rivets hold the bridge together.

5:13:33 > 5:13:36Each one of these were painted by hand.

5:13:36 > 5:13:396.5 million rivets - that is a lot of work.

5:13:39 > 5:13:41A lot of cups of tea, isn't it?

5:13:45 > 5:13:49With the painting part of the project over, the biggest challenge now

5:13:49 > 5:13:53is finally taking down the 4,000 tonnes of scaffolding.

5:13:53 > 5:13:54Before I help the boys out,

5:13:54 > 5:13:58I am braving the lift and heading to the very top of the bridge.

5:13:58 > 5:14:03- How high is this? - 110 metres above the River Forth.

5:14:03 > 5:14:05We are going to the highest point of the bridge.

5:14:05 > 5:14:09It makes you wonder how they actually built it in the first place,

5:14:09 > 5:14:10without lifts.

5:14:10 > 5:14:15You are right, how the guys built this 120-130 years ago,

5:14:15 > 5:14:17- is just unbelievable. - It's incredible.

5:14:17 > 5:14:20As long as it stops and doesn't fall, I'm all right.

5:14:24 > 5:14:26Oh, oh, oh!

5:14:27 > 5:14:32Here we are, we are now on top of the Forth Bridge.

5:14:32 > 5:14:34It is incredible.

5:14:34 > 5:14:36Wow.

5:14:36 > 5:14:38Even when you are at the side, on the banks,

5:14:38 > 5:14:41looking at this amazing structure in the distance,

5:14:41 > 5:14:43you never really get a sense of its size

5:14:43 > 5:14:46until you're at the top of it, looking down.

5:14:48 > 5:14:50Who has got the bungee cord?

5:14:52 > 5:14:55Having experienced the highest peak of the bridge,

5:14:55 > 5:14:58it is now time to get my hands dirty, dismantling the scaffolding.

5:14:58 > 5:15:01- How long have you been here now? - I've been here nine years now.

5:15:01 > 5:15:04- Nine years on the bridge.- Yeah.

5:15:04 > 5:15:09This truly is a landmark moment for the workers like Colin,

5:15:09 > 5:15:13who have been trying to tame this metal beast for many years.

5:15:13 > 5:15:17Are you sad to see the end of the scaffolding and the boards?

5:15:17 > 5:15:19It is a unique site. We will never get the experience

5:15:19 > 5:15:22anywhere in Britain on a job like this again.

5:15:22 > 5:15:25It will take me ten years to shift all this.

5:15:28 > 5:15:30Before I leave, I have one final mission.

5:15:30 > 5:15:34I have heard that when King Edward VII opened the bridge in 1890,

5:15:34 > 5:15:37he put in the very last rivet himself,

5:15:37 > 5:15:40and it was said to be made of pure gold.

5:15:40 > 5:15:43As it turns out, there is no golden rivet. Apparently, it is a myth.

5:15:43 > 5:15:45But there is one piece of gold

5:15:45 > 5:15:48that I think would suit this bridge perfectly.

5:15:48 > 5:15:50So to honour the thousands who built it

5:15:50 > 5:15:55and to celebrate one of the greatest feats of Victorian engineering,

5:15:55 > 5:15:58it gives me great pleasure to present the gold Blue Peter badge

5:15:58 > 5:16:00to the Forth Bridge.

5:16:03 > 5:16:06Such an incredible piece of Victorian engineering.

5:16:06 > 5:16:07The steel they used to build it

5:16:07 > 5:16:10is as strong today as it was 121 years ago.

5:16:10 > 5:16:14Pixie, we couldn't have been on the show without asking some questions.

5:16:14 > 5:16:16Our viewers have been getting in touch.

5:16:16 > 5:16:18We've had loads of messages via the message boards

5:16:18 > 5:16:22and we've some excited people waiting to speak to you

5:16:22 > 5:16:24on our visual video phone.

5:16:24 > 5:16:26Let's go to our first callers.

5:16:46 > 5:16:49Erm, I always change my mind.

5:16:49 > 5:16:51From the first album it's always the ballads,

5:16:53 > 5:16:57From this album, there is a ballad called We Just Go On or You Win.

5:16:57 > 5:17:00They're my favourites. I wrote a song last week that I love,

5:17:00 > 5:17:05but I can't tell you the name yet, in case it comes out as a single.

5:17:24 > 5:17:28What inspired you to be a singer when you were my age?

5:17:28 > 5:17:31When I was younger, I used to listen to all the massive singers.

5:17:31 > 5:17:36The big female diva voices, like Mariah or Whitney or Celine Dion.

5:17:36 > 5:17:41I was in awe of their voices. It really inspired me to get involved.

5:17:41 > 5:17:44Did that influence the kind of style you wanted to sing?

5:17:44 > 5:17:46- They are big diva voices. - Definitely.

5:17:46 > 5:17:48It's what I learnt from.

5:17:48 > 5:17:50I'd listen to them and, kind of,

5:17:50 > 5:17:52not copy their style, but I didn't have lessons.

5:17:52 > 5:17:56I just listened to them all the time and that's how I got into it.

5:17:56 > 5:18:01- Do you want to be a singer? - I want to be a singer and an actor.

5:18:01 > 5:18:05- Give us a spin. Go, "Oh, yeah". - Oh, yeah!- What a voice!

5:18:05 > 5:18:10What a stunner. Maddie, thanks for your question. See you later.

5:18:19 > 5:18:22What would you like to ask, Nathan?

5:18:22 > 5:18:25If you could write a song all about Blue Peter,

5:18:25 > 5:18:28what would be the first two lines?

5:18:28 > 5:18:30That is a very good question, Nathan.

5:18:30 > 5:18:34If I had to put it into one of my songs it'd be Kiss the Stars.

5:18:34 > 5:18:37It would go...

5:18:37 > 5:18:39# Baby, baby, I'm on Blue Peter

5:18:39 > 5:18:44# Standing with Barney Isn't this funny? #

5:18:44 > 5:18:47Nice! That is why she's stood there and we're over here.
