6:49:51 > 6:49:54CHEERING & APPLAUSE

6:49:54 > 6:49:57Hello! That is the sound of a start of a show, isn't it?

6:49:57 > 6:49:59You are watching Blue Peter.

6:49:59 > 6:50:01We are live and jam-packed. Yes, we are full of jam.

6:50:17 > 6:50:20I can't wait either, because we get to ask you a question.

6:50:20 > 6:50:22We are live. This is really happening right now

6:50:22 > 6:50:24and it is interactive. Here is the question...

6:50:27 > 6:50:30It does not have to be a sport. It can be anything you like.

6:50:31 > 6:50:35Only e-mail us if you are watching us on a Thursday, please.

6:50:37 > 6:50:41Now, very soon, Barney and I are leaving the UK for a few days.

6:50:41 > 6:50:45We are heading on a week-long tour of the two Eastern European

6:50:45 > 6:50:48countries hosting the European Championships.

6:50:48 > 6:50:52Yep, Euro 2012 will be taking place in the Ukraine and Poland.

6:50:52 > 6:50:56But we wanted to give you the inside story on some of the unusual

6:50:56 > 6:50:58sights and crazy cultures of the two countries.

6:50:58 > 6:51:01Neither myself or Helen speak Polish, but we thought

6:51:01 > 6:51:04it would be a good idea if one of us knew the basics before we went.

6:51:04 > 6:51:08So, desperate times called for desperate measures.

6:51:08 > 6:51:11Have you ever wished you could learn everything,

6:51:11 > 6:51:13so that you could pass your exams with flying colours?

6:51:13 > 6:51:15Maybe you'd like to know all there is to know about

6:51:15 > 6:51:17your favourite pop group,

6:51:17 > 6:51:19to prove that you are their biggest super-fan.

6:51:19 > 6:51:22Well, today, I am learning to speak Polish -

6:51:22 > 6:51:24just the basics, I only have a few hours to do this -

6:51:24 > 6:51:26by tricking my brain into retaining the information,

6:51:26 > 6:51:29using some very clever techniques that you can use at school.

6:51:29 > 6:51:31And this guy is going to help me.

6:51:31 > 6:51:33Ed Cooke is a grandmaster of memory,

6:51:33 > 6:51:37who claims he can memorise a whole pack of cards in 45 seconds.

6:51:37 > 6:51:40He uses a memorising technique called mems,

6:51:40 > 6:51:43but can it really help me to learn basic Polish?

6:51:43 > 6:51:46Let us start off with the obvious question - what is a mem?

6:51:46 > 6:51:51So, a mem is anything which makes learning fun and interesting.

6:51:51 > 6:51:54Let us say you are trying to learn the German word for "poison",

6:51:54 > 6:51:56which is "gift", right?

6:51:56 > 6:52:00Now, that may get you a bit confused, but it is also an opportunity.

6:52:00 > 6:52:04So you say, imagine your sister giving you a gift of some poison.

6:52:04 > 6:52:08- Then you can't really forget that the German word for poison is gift.- Sure.

6:52:08 > 6:52:10So, for me to learn ten words - ten Polish words -

6:52:10 > 6:52:12I would need to know ten mems?

6:52:12 > 6:52:14Mems help you get your head round the word,

6:52:14 > 6:52:18so one mem for each word - a nice image that will help you learn it.

6:52:18 > 6:52:21'There are three different stages to the mems process

6:52:21 > 6:52:24'and now Ed is going to run them through with me...'

6:52:28 > 6:52:29Here is an easy one.

6:52:29 > 6:52:32Shoes. The word for shoes in Polish is "buty".

6:52:32 > 6:52:37So, here we have got some buty-ful shoes.

6:52:37 > 6:52:40'So, when I want to think of the Polish word for shoes,

6:52:40 > 6:52:43'all I have to do is remember this picture.

6:52:43 > 6:52:47'OK, I think I have got that. Time for stage two...'

6:52:49 > 6:52:53What you want to do is combine the first stage, which is bright imagery,

6:52:53 > 6:52:57something to imagine, something which is fun and interesting, with a lot

6:52:57 > 6:53:00of repetition. That will really nail something into your brain.

6:53:00 > 6:53:03'Easy, so all I have to do is repeat myself.

6:53:03 > 6:53:06'Buty - shoes, buty - shoes, buty - shoes.

6:53:06 > 6:53:09'OK, repetition nailed, it is time for the final stage,

6:53:09 > 6:53:12'testing, also known as recalling.'

6:53:12 > 6:53:15What I'll ask you to do is a little bit of physical exercise.

6:53:15 > 6:53:19Just give me five press-us. You look like a strong man.

6:53:19 > 6:53:23'Hang on, what has exercise got to do with recalling, please?'

6:53:23 > 6:53:26OK, great! So I have got one question for you -

6:53:26 > 6:53:30- do you feel stronger now?- I see where you're going. Yeah, I do.

6:53:30 > 6:53:35It is exactly the same with your brain. Each memory is like a muscle.

6:53:35 > 6:53:39Every time you produce that memory, you are strengthening the muscle.

6:53:39 > 6:53:44Testing is all about strengthening the memories you have.

6:53:44 > 6:53:46So taking those three stages you've just talked me through -

6:53:46 > 6:53:50the mems - the images - repetition - saying it over and over -

6:53:50 > 6:53:54and then recalling - strengthening what you've learned -

6:53:54 > 6:53:58- we're now going to go away and learn Polish.- Awesome.

6:54:00 > 6:54:04'So, I'm going to try and remember ten common Polish words

6:54:04 > 6:54:06'that will be useful for my and Helen's Eastern European road trip.'

6:54:06 > 6:54:11'Basics first - how would I remember the Polish word for "yes"?'

6:54:11 > 6:54:14We have a little Polish guy here and he has just invented a tack.

6:54:14 > 6:54:16He's like, "Yes!" Tack!

6:54:16 > 6:54:18So whenever I think about the word "yes", I am thinking

6:54:18 > 6:54:21about the guy, "Yes, I've invented the tack!"

6:54:21 > 6:54:25'Over the next half an hour, I use Ed's mems technique

6:54:25 > 6:54:28'to try and learn ten basic Polish words.

6:54:28 > 6:54:32'So I'm thinking of, and drawing, an image,

6:54:32 > 6:54:34'then repeating it and testing it with Ed.'

6:54:34 > 6:54:41- What does prosze make you think of? - Prosze. Protege...project...

6:54:41 > 6:54:44'This is really clever and I can see it working.

6:54:44 > 6:54:48Don't forget, you can always use this to help you with your exams.

6:54:50 > 6:54:54Study over, Ed is now going to test me on five out of the ten words.'

6:54:54 > 6:55:00- If I ask you, do you speak Polish, in Polish you would say..?- Tak.

6:55:00 > 6:55:03Let's imagine you think the Polish man's goods are cheap,

6:55:03 > 6:55:06- what do you call them?- Tani.

6:55:06 > 6:55:12- Now you want to say "goodbye". - Goodbye. Right. Wave... Oh, yeah...

6:55:12 > 6:55:17Erm... It's the doe-flower. It's a doe with zinnia.

6:55:17 > 6:55:20- Do widzenia.- OK, perfect.

6:55:20 > 6:55:22How about, erm, please?

6:55:22 > 6:55:27- Er, it's the kid with the... Prosze. Prosze.- Very good.

6:55:27 > 6:55:33- Now you want to say "thank you". - So I say, dziekuje.

6:55:33 > 6:55:34Very good, excellent.

6:55:34 > 6:55:38OK, that is absolutely superb - five out of five on the test.

6:55:38 > 6:55:42'I'm well chuffed with that result, but remembering them short term

6:55:42 > 6:55:44'is a different to recalling them days later.

6:55:44 > 6:55:47'So Ed has a challenge for me.'

6:55:47 > 6:55:53Go home, use this technique, use these images, the repetition

6:55:53 > 6:55:57and this self-testing to learn 40 further words.

6:55:57 > 6:55:59How do you say "bring it on" in Polish?!

6:55:59 > 6:56:03Here is one I learnt earlier.

6:56:03 > 6:56:06And Ed is in the studio to give me that test. Great to see you.

6:56:06 > 6:56:09Great to see you. How has the homework been going?

6:56:09 > 6:56:12I think it went OK. I used them mems and repeated them.

6:56:12 > 6:56:15- I have definitely got 30 out of the 50.- OK.

6:56:15 > 6:56:16Oh, he's confident.

6:56:16 > 6:56:19Just remind us of the techniques you hope Barney will use.

6:56:19 > 6:56:22The important things are imagery, repetition and testing yourself.

6:56:22 > 6:56:28OK, it is time, Barney, to see if you know your Polish.

6:56:28 > 6:56:32- Stop making it so dramatic. - The music is making it dramatic.

6:56:32 > 6:56:37OK, Barney is ready. Ed, can you give him his first word, please?

6:56:37 > 6:56:40You learned 50 words. I've taken ten difficult ones out of the list.

6:56:40 > 6:56:45The first word is, expensive. What is Polish for "expensive"?

6:56:45 > 6:56:48The Polish word for expensive. Now this is to do with

6:56:48 > 6:56:50a football with a dollar sign in it.

6:56:50 > 6:56:53It refers to a footballer known as Drogba. He is quite expensive.

6:56:53 > 6:56:55The Polish word for expensive is "drogi".

6:56:57 > 6:56:59Ooh, he is correct!

6:56:59 > 6:57:01Well done, Barney. One out of one.

6:57:01 > 6:57:04Next up, we have got "thank you". How do you say "thank you"?

6:57:04 > 6:57:07This is the couple in a restaurant and one of them asks for the cheque

6:57:07 > 6:57:11and when he gets it, he goes, "Ooh, yeah!" His missus says, "thank you."

6:57:11 > 6:57:13So it's "dziekuje".

6:57:13 > 6:57:14Oh, correct!

6:57:14 > 6:57:20- Barney, I am impressed! Ed, next. - What is Polish for "pardon"?

6:57:22 > 6:57:26Yes, this is a very random mem that I made up while driving home.

6:57:26 > 6:57:32It is a guy sucking ham and someone going, "You did what? Pardon?"

6:57:32 > 6:57:36- So it is "stucham".- I am concerned about the way your mind works,

6:57:36 > 6:57:39but I am impressed with your memory,. Well done, Barney.

6:57:39 > 6:57:40Next up, how do you say "today"?

6:57:40 > 6:57:44"Gee, you look shy today" is the phrase I learnt for this.

6:57:44 > 6:57:45It is "dzisiaj".

6:57:48 > 6:57:51- Oh, very good!- Good stuff. Next up is "bath".

6:57:54 > 6:57:56Think.

6:57:56 > 6:57:58This is "wanna".

6:58:01 > 6:58:04- Ooh! Wasn't sure there! - You got it right!

6:58:04 > 6:58:06Another random one - table. How do you say "table"?

6:58:06 > 6:58:08Table is really easy. You stow things under it.

6:58:08 > 6:58:12The Polish word for table is "stot".

6:58:12 > 6:58:17- Correct, very impressive. Six out of six, so far.- What's car?

6:58:17 > 6:58:22Car. I think of my brother in the summer, chewing gum.

6:58:22 > 6:58:26He used to get told off by my mum. And his name is Sam.

6:58:26 > 6:58:30A slang word for chewing gum is chud. He's in the car, in summer,

6:58:30 > 6:58:31it's "samachod".

6:58:33 > 6:58:36- Very impressive. - OK, three to go. Map? What's map?

6:58:36 > 6:58:41- Map's quite easy. It's just "mapa". - And how about "plane"?

6:58:41 > 6:58:44Mapa is correct! Moving on to plane.

6:58:44 > 6:58:46My dad's favourite comedy group when I was younger

6:58:46 > 6:58:48were Monty Python's Flying Circus.

6:58:48 > 6:58:51There is a musical based on their life called Spamalot.

6:58:51 > 6:58:56I imagined them being in a plane on tour. Samolot is the word for plane.

6:58:58 > 6:59:00I just have to applaud! One more!

6:59:00 > 6:59:03- Cat is your last one. - Cat is my favourite word,

6:59:03 > 6:59:06because it is very simple, the same amount of letters.

6:59:06 > 6:59:10I think about a baby cat in a cot. because the Polish word is "kot".

6:59:11 > 6:59:13I am impressed!

6:59:13 > 6:59:15CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

6:59:15 > 6:59:17- Take a bow!- Thank you!

6:59:17 > 6:59:21- You're not secretly Polish, are you?!- No! Sorry, nie.

6:59:21 > 6:59:24- Missed a trick, didn't I? - Thank you Ed. Fantastic technique.

6:59:24 > 6:59:26If you have got an exam coming up, or maybe you are in play and need to

6:59:26 > 6:59:30learn some lines, that is a good a technique that you could use.

6:59:30 > 6:59:31But the question is, Barney,

6:59:31 > 6:59:37- can you remember what else is on the programme today?- I'll do me best!

6:59:37 > 6:59:39Still to come on today's show...

6:59:39 > 6:59:43I get the inside story on what it is really like being

6:59:43 > 6:59:47a teenage pop star on tour from hot US boy band, Mindless Behaviour.

6:59:47 > 6:59:52And champion jet skier Jack Moule reveals the secret weapon stunt

6:59:52 > 6:59:56that he hopes will win him the title of number one in the world.

6:59:56 > 7:00:00- He is amazing.- He is. Now, one guy who is also very amazing -

7:00:00 > 7:00:05or we think so - is Barney the dog. Barney. He can do the odd trick.

7:00:05 > 7:00:11- High five! High five!- Yeah! Good boy, good boy!- Roll over.

7:00:11 > 7:00:15- Roll over, dude.- Sit still!

7:00:15 > 7:00:19We are underselling him, because Barney can do magic. Watch this.

7:00:19 > 7:00:22He will now make this biscuit disappear.

7:00:22 > 7:00:26DRUM ROLL

7:00:26 > 7:00:28- Da-da!- Nearly!

7:00:28 > 7:00:34All right, he might not be the cleverest pooch in the pack,

7:00:34 > 7:00:37but we love him and his job is just to be our friend

7:00:37 > 7:00:40- and I think he does it pretty well. - He does. He's the best friend.

7:00:40 > 7:00:43Some dogs have very important jobs and without them

7:00:43 > 7:00:45their owners' lives would not be the same.

7:00:45 > 7:00:48Guide dogs for children who are blind have been around for a while,

7:00:48 > 7:00:50but they now train special dogs

7:00:50 > 7:00:52to help children with hearing difficulties.

7:00:52 > 7:00:57Here is the story of one girl and her amazing pooch.

7:01:00 > 7:01:04I'm Poppy and this is Maddie. and this is Being Us.

7:01:04 > 7:01:0811-year-old Poppy has had severe hearing loss since she was born.

7:01:08 > 7:01:12As well as being her lovable pet, Maddie is also her hearing dog.

7:01:12 > 7:01:14ALARM BEEPS

7:01:14 > 7:01:17'Maddie helps me hear things all day long,

7:01:17 > 7:01:18'starting with my morning alarm clock.'

7:01:18 > 7:01:20Morning, Mads.

7:01:20 > 7:01:23Maddie has lived with Poppy's family for over two years.

7:01:23 > 7:01:28Morning. Morning, Maddie.

7:01:28 > 7:01:31'Maddie does loads for me. As well as letting me know

7:01:31 > 7:01:35'when my mum is calling for me to come downstairs.'

7:01:35 > 7:01:38Maddie! Fetch Poppy!

7:01:38 > 7:01:40'With the right training, hearing dogs can act

7:01:40 > 7:01:43'as the ears for deaf children.'

7:01:43 > 7:01:44What a day!

7:01:44 > 7:01:46Maddie helps me hear things all day long.

7:01:52 > 7:01:54Maddie does loads for me.

7:01:54 > 7:01:57As well as telling me to come downstairs, she also alerts me

7:01:57 > 7:01:59to any other sounds in the house.

7:01:59 > 7:02:03'If Maddie hears an alarm, she tells Poppy there is a problem.

7:02:03 > 7:02:05ALARM BEEPS

7:02:05 > 7:02:07What is it? What is it?

7:02:07 > 7:02:11If it is dangerous, she lies flat on the floor.

7:02:11 > 7:02:13It's OK, Poppy, it's just the smoke from the bacon.

7:02:16 > 7:02:21'Maddie only helps out at home with the family, she also listens out,

7:02:21 > 7:02:25'to make sure nothing happens to me in my daily routine.'

7:02:25 > 7:02:31As Poppy is 11, she does not walk anywhere on her own but just having

7:02:31 > 7:02:34Maddie by her side helps build her confidence when she's out and about.

7:02:34 > 7:02:38When she is a grown-up, Poppy will get another hearing dog,

7:02:38 > 7:02:41that will help her be completely independent.

7:02:41 > 7:02:43Yargh!

7:02:44 > 7:02:49'I have been doing karate for a while and I love it. It keeps me active.

7:02:49 > 7:02:53And wherever Poppy goes, so does her Maddie.

7:02:55 > 7:02:59Me and Poppy are best friends. I've known Poppy since she was two.

7:02:59 > 7:03:02Since she's got Maddie, she has really grown in confidence.

7:03:02 > 7:03:04We play with Maddie together.

7:03:09 > 7:03:12'Now that karate is over, I have to do some homework.'

7:03:14 > 7:03:18Before I get started, you sent in a few questions.

7:03:25 > 7:03:26Tremendously.

7:03:26 > 7:03:29I used to struggle crossing the roads,

7:03:29 > 7:03:32I had trouble sleeping at night.

7:03:32 > 7:03:35But now she really comforts me.

7:03:43 > 7:03:44Yes, Maddie does go everywhere with me,

7:03:44 > 7:03:48but she is not naughty, because she has been specially trained not to be.

7:03:48 > 7:03:51Got to go now, thanks for hanging with us.

7:03:51 > 7:03:54I'm Poppy, this is Maddie. And this is Being Us.

7:03:59 > 7:04:02That dog is so impressive!

7:04:02 > 7:04:04If there was bacon around, Barney would just eat it.

7:04:04 > 7:04:06Oh, yeah, he knows what he wants.

7:04:06 > 7:04:08In a few minutes, we'll head outside to see Jack Moule

7:04:08 > 7:04:11show off his amazing Jet Ski skills.

7:04:11 > 7:04:14But before that, we asked you...

7:09:56 > 7:09:58It takes some doing and sounds impressive, so...

7:10:40 > 7:10:46They are just so cool! I want to be them, but I am so not.

7:10:46 > 7:10:49As pop stars, they no doubt chase number ones.

7:10:49 > 7:10:52One guy also after that number one slot in the world

7:10:52 > 7:10:56is 17-year-old pro Jet Skier Jack Moule, who is outside in the canal,

7:10:56 > 7:10:59waiting to perform a choreographed routine

7:10:59 > 7:11:02he has set up especially for you guys.

7:11:02 > 7:11:04It's pretty daring.

7:11:04 > 7:11:06Before we look at that, let's remind ourselves

7:11:06 > 7:11:08of when I met him a few years ago.

7:11:08 > 7:11:11He was just 14 and keen to teach me a few moves.

7:11:11 > 7:11:13You have got a bit of a challenge for me.

7:11:13 > 7:11:15In one day I'm going to teach you how to do

7:11:15 > 7:11:17a Jet Ski freestyle trick called a bulldog.

7:11:17 > 7:11:21I have never been anywhere near a Jet Ski! Can I do this?

7:11:21 > 7:11:24- Of course you can. Let's get your gear.- OK.

7:11:24 > 7:11:27Before I could get started, he wanted to show me

7:11:27 > 7:11:31what my ultimate goal would be - the bulldog.

7:11:33 > 7:11:36This trick involves lying on the hood of the Jet Ski

7:11:36 > 7:11:38and spinning it round.

7:11:38 > 7:11:41Not sure how I'm going to master that!

7:11:41 > 7:11:44'At first, it was back to basics for me,

7:11:44 > 7:11:47'learning to start the Jet Ski and move off safely.'

7:11:47 > 7:11:49- Start like that.- Yeah.- And then...

7:11:49 > 7:11:54- give it a little bit of throttle, pull yourself upon to your knees.- OK.

7:11:54 > 7:11:57'It all seemed pretty straightforward...

7:11:57 > 7:12:01'but it had a bit more power than I thought it would!'

7:12:05 > 7:12:07I had to learn to get up on my knees.

7:12:07 > 7:12:10I knew I would have to master turning

7:12:10 > 7:12:13if I was going to pull off the bulldog.

7:12:13 > 7:12:14More of a sharp turn!

7:12:14 > 7:12:15OK.

7:12:17 > 7:12:21'It's not as easy as it looks.'

7:12:21 > 7:12:24Turning on my knees is one thing, but for the bulldog,

7:12:24 > 7:12:28I need to balance on the hood, so it's back to dry land.

7:12:28 > 7:12:31The first thing I need to do is that.

7:12:31 > 7:12:33Yeah, fix your hand to that.

7:12:33 > 7:12:34Lift, turn.

7:12:34 > 7:12:38Yeah. Put your leg more down, make it bent a bit.

7:12:38 > 7:12:39That is a bulldog.

7:12:39 > 7:12:40'Sure, Jack. No problem(!)'

7:12:40 > 7:12:42You're on your own, now, Helen.

7:12:42 > 7:12:45I began to FEEL on my own.

7:12:45 > 7:12:49The bulldog seemed easy on the land, but the water was a different story.

7:12:49 > 7:12:52I was falling off left...

7:12:52 > 7:12:53right...

7:12:53 > 7:12:55and centre!

7:12:57 > 7:13:00Eventually, I started to get the hang of it.

7:13:02 > 7:13:04Whoo!

7:13:04 > 7:13:07Yeeeeah!

7:13:07 > 7:13:08Whoo!

7:13:08 > 7:13:11- That was it!- Yay! I like that.

7:13:11 > 7:13:15Now, since then, Jack has come a long way.

7:13:19 > 7:13:21to become world champion.

7:13:24 > 7:13:27so, when Barney heard the word "Jet Ski",

7:13:27 > 7:13:32he put his wetsuit on and headed out there to meet the man himself.

7:13:56 > 7:13:58This is a stand-up Jet Ski with a 900cc engine,

7:13:58 > 7:14:02and it's fully carbon fibre. Yours is a sit-down Jet Ski

7:14:02 > 7:14:04and it's built for freerolling.

7:14:04 > 7:14:08Yours has to be nice and light, cos you do tricks. What does it weigh?

7:14:08 > 7:14:10It weighs 15 stone.

7:15:41 > 7:15:44you are going to compete in Arizona to become number one.

7:15:44 > 7:15:46Do you have a signature move?

7:15:46 > 7:15:48A no-handed barrel roll.

7:15:48 > 7:15:49A no-handed barrel roll.

7:15:49 > 7:15:52- You're going to do something in the air with no hands?- Yeah.

7:15:52 > 7:15:54It's a 360-degree rotation.
