0:00:05 > 0:00:08This week, the Blue Peter producers told me they'd booked a co-presenter

0:00:08 > 0:00:11who was adventurous, brave and incredibly strong.

0:00:11 > 0:00:14I told them, "Cancel the booking, guys, I got this."

0:00:14 > 0:00:17- Linds, you all right? - It's Steve Backshall.

0:00:19 > 0:00:20Ooh!

0:00:29 > 0:00:31CHEERING

0:00:34 > 0:00:37Hello! You're watching live Blue Peter.

0:00:37 > 0:00:39Of course, Radzi is still away at the Winter Olympics,

0:00:39 > 0:00:42but fear not - look who's here! It's the amazing Steve Backshall!

0:00:42 > 0:00:44CHEERING

0:00:44 > 0:00:49I'm excited you're here. Can we just draw attention to this bad boy?

0:00:49 > 0:00:53- The gold badge is on, people. - My most treasured possession.

0:00:53 > 0:00:56It's looking good. We've got an amazing show coming up. Before that,

0:00:56 > 0:00:59though, you've got an announcement that you're desperate to make.

0:00:59 > 0:01:01Yes, I have. So, just next week I'm going to be heading out

0:01:01 > 0:01:04to Switzerland, I'm going to be attempting to climb

0:01:04 > 0:01:06the north face of the Eiger.

0:01:06 > 0:01:11OK, hang on, we need some details. What exactly is the Eiger?

0:01:11 > 0:01:14The Eiger is a mountain about 4,000 metres high, in Switzerland,

0:01:14 > 0:01:18- but the north face is a very special place.- Hang on - that's large.

0:01:18 > 0:01:20Yes, it is. It's huge.

0:01:20 > 0:01:22It's one of the most iconic, challenging,

0:01:22 > 0:01:24daunting things in all of mountaineering,

0:01:24 > 0:01:26and that little dot you can see running up there, that's our route.

0:01:26 > 0:01:29- We're hoping it'll take us about three days.- Three days?!

0:01:29 > 0:01:30But you just never know.

0:01:30 > 0:01:33All that time you'll be sleeping on the rock face,

0:01:33 > 0:01:35obviously doing everything else on the rock face.

0:01:35 > 0:01:38- It's going to be full-on. - OK, more on that later.- Yes.

0:01:38 > 0:01:40Can I just ask, why are you doing this?

0:01:40 > 0:01:42Well, it's a childhood dream.

0:01:42 > 0:01:44It's something I've wanted to do since I was knee high,

0:01:44 > 0:01:48but also I really want to try and get everyone else out there, taking

0:01:48 > 0:01:51on their own challenges, facing the things that frighten them.

0:01:51 > 0:01:53OK, how do you prepare for something like this?

0:01:53 > 0:01:55You're obviously a strong, fit guy,

0:01:55 > 0:01:57but you gotta be amazing for this, haven't you?

0:01:57 > 0:01:59It's been pretty full-on

0:01:59 > 0:02:03so I'm very lucky in that my wife is a double-Olympic rowing champion,

0:02:03 > 0:02:06- Helen Glover... - We've had her on BP, she's a legend.

0:02:06 > 0:02:09- So she's been training you up? - She has, yeah.

0:02:09 > 0:02:11So, cold water training, jumping into the river,

0:02:11 > 0:02:12even in the middle of winter,

0:02:12 > 0:02:15doing lots of stuff that's for strengthening my core

0:02:15 > 0:02:19and for my hands and forearms - it's really important for climbing.

0:02:19 > 0:02:24- And, yeah...- You're a machine! - I don't feel like it right now.

0:02:24 > 0:02:26You're going to be great. How long have we got?

0:02:26 > 0:02:28- You've got a while till you do it, right?- Well, maybe not.

0:02:28 > 0:02:31This time next week I could potentially be on the rock face.

0:02:31 > 0:02:33But we're going to be sending updates all the time.

0:02:33 > 0:02:35We're going to be posting on the CBBC website,

0:02:35 > 0:02:37so that's a way for all of you to follow me

0:02:37 > 0:02:40every single step of the way, hopefully all the way to the top.

0:02:40 > 0:02:41There's stuff there now,

0:02:41 > 0:02:44including how you're going to go to the toilet.

0:02:44 > 0:02:47We're not going to say anything... Check it out. It's interesting.

0:02:47 > 0:02:50It's going to be cold, but that's kind of what you want.

0:02:50 > 0:02:52We need it to be cold, we need it to be furiously

0:02:52 > 0:02:56cold for all of the ice and snow to be climbable.

0:02:56 > 0:02:59So at least minus 20, which is kind of the inside of your freezer,

0:02:59 > 0:03:00- if not quite a bit more.- Oh.

0:03:00 > 0:03:03I don't know why you're doing this but you are a hero,

0:03:03 > 0:03:05you are a legend, and you're also going to love today's show,

0:03:05 > 0:03:07it's as cool as ice, because you're going to see Radzi

0:03:07 > 0:03:09and I quite literally take to the ice.

0:03:09 > 0:03:13I get a bit of a sore bun as we try ice hockey.

0:03:13 > 0:03:16- Look at that kit!- Wow!- Serious pads.

0:03:16 > 0:03:18- You are a natural at that.- Stop it.

0:03:18 > 0:03:20And I am going to be using the appliance of science

0:03:20 > 0:03:24and liquid nitrogen to basically break loads of stuff.

0:03:24 > 0:03:27- One of my favourite things. - As well as that, HRVY's here!

0:03:27 > 0:03:30Cannot wait for his performance a little bit later on.

0:03:30 > 0:03:33It's going to be a great show. You might recognise this little girl.

0:03:33 > 0:03:35Nearly forgot her.

0:03:35 > 0:03:37It's little Shells and she's got her winter outfit on.

0:03:37 > 0:03:40She's ready for climbing. Look, she's got little booties on.

0:03:40 > 0:03:41I love her so much.

0:03:41 > 0:03:44If you can spot her at any point during today's show,

0:03:44 > 0:03:46head online and let us know where she's hiding.

0:03:46 > 0:03:48It's a tough one this week.

0:03:48 > 0:03:50- Bye, Shells.- Yes, but first,

0:03:50 > 0:03:53the bit that we've all been waiting for more than anything else.

0:03:53 > 0:03:55It's time for the Big Badge Wall.

0:03:55 > 0:03:57Let's walk this way.

0:03:57 > 0:03:59Look who's joining us, it's HRVY!

0:03:59 > 0:04:03- Hello!- Hello! Welcome to BP. - Thank you for having me.

0:04:03 > 0:04:06We should say thank you for coming cos you have been so busy.

0:04:06 > 0:04:07I have been really, really busy.

0:04:07 > 0:04:10I've been travelling across America, I'm going

0:04:10 > 0:04:12to India next week, so that's exciting.

0:04:12 > 0:04:14I'm not climbing a mountain but, you know, it's pretty cool.

0:04:14 > 0:04:17- OK, and you've got a performance coming up later on.- Yes.

0:04:17 > 0:04:19- Brand-new single.- Yes, and I'm going to be dancing as well.

0:04:19 > 0:04:22So I feel like I need to teach you guys some moves.

0:04:22 > 0:04:25- OK, we're auditioning!- Yeah, you're auditioning to be in the band.

0:04:25 > 0:04:26- OK, so shall we just go for it? - Yeah, go on.

0:04:26 > 0:04:28OK, so, right foot forward.

0:04:28 > 0:04:30- OK, yeah, give it a stamp if you want.- Whey!

0:04:30 > 0:04:32Cross your arms like that.

0:04:32 > 0:04:35- And then pull out like that. - OK. Yeah?- Ready?

0:04:35 > 0:04:38- Oh, putting it all together? - All together. Ready?

0:04:38 > 0:04:40Five, six, seven, eight...

0:04:41 > 0:04:43I mean, yeah, I mean...

0:04:43 > 0:04:46CHEERING Steve Backshall brought some sass.

0:04:46 > 0:04:49The show was cool right up until that precise moment.

0:04:49 > 0:04:53- No.- It was good.- We do have some proper cool up on our wall.

0:04:53 > 0:04:56Saskia from Middlesex has been doing science experiments

0:04:56 > 0:05:00because her parents are actually scientists using liquid nitrogen.

0:05:00 > 0:05:03This is amazing. There's a video, have a look.

0:05:03 > 0:05:06I make ice cream using liquid nitrogen.

0:05:06 > 0:05:09It always tastes delicious.

0:05:12 > 0:05:14Yum!

0:05:14 > 0:05:16- I love her.- Ice cream, yummy.

0:05:16 > 0:05:19And she was showing off her silver Blue Peter badge there,

0:05:19 > 0:05:22which is something you all can get yourself as well

0:05:22 > 0:05:26if you send in things to the regular address, which is...

0:05:26 > 0:05:29- The website address. - Boom, it's right there.

0:05:29 > 0:05:31HRVY, let's check out what you've got.

0:05:31 > 0:05:33Yes, we've got this amazing creation by Lucas.

0:05:33 > 0:05:36- To celebrate Lunar New Year. - That's a thing of beauty.

0:05:36 > 0:05:38- A dragon.- Do you want to feel it?

0:05:38 > 0:05:41- Yeah, and he's recycled old egg boxes.- I know.- This is genius.

0:05:41 > 0:05:43And he's got the little badge as well.

0:05:43 > 0:05:45Amazing. Keep your post coming to the usual address.

0:05:45 > 0:05:47Thank you, and also,

0:05:47 > 0:05:50if you want to get your hands on one of these bad boys, you can.

0:05:50 > 0:05:53- Ooh! - Loads of you have started applying.

0:05:53 > 0:05:56It is our brand-new diamond badge, which is so exciting.

0:05:56 > 0:05:58All the details you need are on the Blue Peter website.

0:05:58 > 0:06:00But now from badges to Book Awards,

0:06:00 > 0:06:03the Book Awards are just a few weeks away so we put some

0:06:03 > 0:06:05top judges to the test to have a look at Best Story Books.

0:06:05 > 0:06:07Check it out.

0:06:10 > 0:06:13These eager book fans have been getting their noses

0:06:13 > 0:06:17into the short list for the Blue Peter Book Awards 2018.

0:06:17 > 0:06:21And we want to know what they think about the three story books.

0:06:21 > 0:06:24- Hello!- Well, hello to you.

0:06:24 > 0:06:27We begin with Wed Wabbit by Lisa Evans.

0:06:27 > 0:06:3111-year-old Fidge is flung into the world of her little sister

0:06:31 > 0:06:34Minnie's favourite story,

0:06:34 > 0:06:36where the Wimbley Woos only speak in rhyme.

0:06:36 > 0:06:38Fidge must solve puzzles to escape

0:06:38 > 0:06:43and if she fails she'll be stuck in a world where Wed Wabbit rules.

0:06:43 > 0:06:47There was some interesting twists in it that you didn't expect.

0:06:47 > 0:06:50When Minnie was taken to the hospital,

0:06:50 > 0:06:52I started to feel a bit nervous,

0:06:52 > 0:06:55scared about what was going to happen next.

0:06:55 > 0:06:58It has lots of interesting parts

0:06:58 > 0:07:03- and funny bits.- The characters and the story made me want to draw them.

0:07:03 > 0:07:06It's so funny and it's so adventurous.

0:07:06 > 0:07:08The front cover, I mean,

0:07:08 > 0:07:12OK, I MAY want to read this... but once you start inside it's

0:07:12 > 0:07:15just really nice, so that's why there's a saying -

0:07:15 > 0:07:18never judge a book from the front cover.

0:07:18 > 0:07:22Wise words. Next up, it's The Island At The End Of Everything

0:07:22 > 0:07:25by Kiran Millwood Hargrave.

0:07:25 > 0:07:27Ami lives happily on the island of

0:07:27 > 0:07:29Culion in the Philippines with her mum.

0:07:29 > 0:07:32When the horrible Mr Zamora comes to the island,

0:07:32 > 0:07:35Ami is forced to leave everything she's ever known.

0:07:35 > 0:07:39And though she tries to get back home, will things ever be the same?

0:07:39 > 0:07:42At the beginning it looked like it was going to be butterflies,

0:07:42 > 0:07:45butterflies, butterflies, like a story of butterflies,

0:07:45 > 0:07:49but when you start reading it, it's like a passion of family.

0:07:49 > 0:07:53It had really cool adventure and a bit of it was sad and happy

0:07:53 > 0:07:57- and stuff.- Quite dramatic, you could say, because...

0:07:57 > 0:08:01- At times, when, like, something comes out of...- Nowhere.- Yeah.

0:08:01 > 0:08:03After you get into it,

0:08:03 > 0:08:07you understand why they're on an island.

0:08:07 > 0:08:09I just keep on wanting to know what would happen next.

0:08:09 > 0:08:13There was a few moments where I was actually quite shocked.

0:08:13 > 0:08:16You couldn't stop reading cos it left you

0:08:16 > 0:08:18in suspension at the end of every page.

0:08:18 > 0:08:21So you couldn't put the book down.

0:08:21 > 0:08:23What will these guys think of The Wizards Of Once

0:08:23 > 0:08:25by Cressida Cowell?

0:08:25 > 0:08:27Wish and Xar are from two different tribes,

0:08:27 > 0:08:30living in magical, ancient Britain.

0:08:30 > 0:08:33Wish has got her hands on a secret object she will do anything

0:08:33 > 0:08:37to hide and Xar will do anything to get his hands on it.

0:08:37 > 0:08:41It was a very fun book with ups and downs.

0:08:41 > 0:08:43It always has a lot of description

0:08:43 > 0:08:48and so you always want to reread it, even though you already finished it.

0:08:48 > 0:08:53It was different from all the other pictures you would see in a book.

0:08:53 > 0:08:55At the start they were enemies.

0:08:55 > 0:08:58Although they're both supposed to hate each other,

0:08:58 > 0:09:00when they met they suddenly liked each other.

0:09:00 > 0:09:04That's a really good thing because...

0:09:04 > 0:09:05And it's a bit like a moral.

0:09:05 > 0:09:07There's nothing that I didn't like about the book.

0:09:07 > 0:09:09Everything was perfect for me.

0:09:09 > 0:09:14Wow! Rave reviews all round for the Best Story short list.

0:09:14 > 0:09:17This, my friends, is a tough category.

0:09:18 > 0:09:19It is indeed.

0:09:19 > 0:09:22Make sure you're watching BP on the 1st of March to find out who

0:09:22 > 0:09:24gets a Blue Peter Book Award.

0:09:24 > 0:09:27That's also the show where Radzi is going to be back in the studio.

0:09:27 > 0:09:30Cannot wait for that. CHEERING

0:09:30 > 0:09:31Yeah, we're excited.

0:09:31 > 0:09:34We came in super early this morning to have a bit of a chat with him.

0:09:34 > 0:09:36Have a look.

0:09:36 > 0:09:38- Hello, Linds!- How are you?

0:09:38 > 0:09:41It's worth saying that we've had to pre-record this for good reason,

0:09:41 > 0:09:43- haven't we?- Absolutely.

0:09:43 > 0:09:45It's night-time, we're nine hours ahead here,

0:09:45 > 0:09:47so we've done it before the show.

0:09:47 > 0:09:49It's really cold but it's really awesome here.

0:09:49 > 0:09:52Tell us what you've been up to cos it's been an amazing

0:09:52 > 0:09:54Winter Olympics so far, hasn't it?

0:09:54 > 0:09:56It has indeed.

0:09:56 > 0:09:59Team GB have been so close to medals I can almost smell it,

0:09:59 > 0:10:00but here's a BP exclusive -

0:10:00 > 0:10:03Dom Parsons, Laura Deas and Blue Peter

0:10:03 > 0:10:05gold badge holder Lizzy Yarnold, they're my top tips for you,

0:10:05 > 0:10:08but I've basically been in the studio linking to all

0:10:08 > 0:10:11the action all around South Korea and it has been incredible.

0:10:11 > 0:10:14You've been doing such a great job, we've been watching at home.

0:10:14 > 0:10:17Are you having a good time? Are you enjoying it out there?

0:10:17 > 0:10:18I am having the best time ever.

0:10:18 > 0:10:21However, it is really cold, it's got as low as minus 23.

0:10:21 > 0:10:25So cold, in fact, my tears actually froze one of my eyelids

0:10:25 > 0:10:28together because it was on my eyelash! That's cold.

0:10:28 > 0:10:31That is freezing, literally. It's good to see you've got the badge on,

0:10:31 > 0:10:35you've taken it all the way with you. Are you missing BP?

0:10:35 > 0:10:39I'm missing BP and I'm also constantly on the website.

0:10:39 > 0:10:43I bet you are, which links us nicely to this.

0:10:50 > 0:10:52Three, two, one.

0:10:54 > 0:10:57I'm kind of threatened by the fact you have sharp claws

0:10:57 > 0:10:59and I have sharp claws.

0:10:59 > 0:11:02Again, another potential character I could play.

0:11:09 > 0:11:13But for now it's time for Break It With Backshall when we bust,

0:11:13 > 0:11:16blow up and free stuff in the name of science.

0:11:16 > 0:11:18And to make sure I can do that in relative safety,

0:11:18 > 0:11:20I've got some friends here, Gus and Terence,

0:11:20 > 0:11:23from the Edinburgh International Science Festival.

0:11:23 > 0:11:24Give them a round of applause, everyone.

0:11:24 > 0:11:26CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:11:26 > 0:11:29So, as I apply my safety gear, can you tell us what we're doing?

0:11:29 > 0:11:32We are going to be experimenting with extreme cold today.

0:11:32 > 0:11:35So, Steve, what's the coldest you've ever been?

0:11:35 > 0:11:41- Top of a mountain in the Himalayas, minus 60 degrees.- Chilly!- Yes.

0:11:41 > 0:11:45So, the stuff we're using today is about three times colder than that.

0:11:45 > 0:11:47CREW: Whoa!

0:11:47 > 0:11:50- I'm not going to be putting my fingers in there.- No, please don't.

0:11:50 > 0:11:52What we've got is in this flask and it is quite dangerous

0:11:52 > 0:11:55but it's only dangerous because it's a liquid.

0:11:55 > 0:11:58Usually it's a gas all around us, we're all breathing it right now -

0:11:58 > 0:12:02it's nitrogen. Nitrogen is about 78% of the air.

0:12:02 > 0:12:04Really important.

0:12:04 > 0:12:07We've got it so cold that it's a liquid now, minus 196 degrees.

0:12:07 > 0:12:10About ten times colder than your freezer at home.

0:12:10 > 0:12:13OK, and what are we going to use this concoction for?

0:12:13 > 0:12:16Let's start experimenting. So, goggles on.

0:12:16 > 0:12:18And we'll take the lid off here.

0:12:18 > 0:12:23- So, Steve, I got you some flowers. - But Valentine's was yesterday!

0:12:23 > 0:12:25I know. Sorry.

0:12:25 > 0:12:27What you're going to do is you're going to pop those

0:12:27 > 0:12:29flowers into the liquid nitrogen.

0:12:29 > 0:12:34- OK.- Now, the liquid nitrogen is really, really cold and it's going

0:12:34 > 0:12:38to start freezing all of the water inside that flower,

0:12:38 > 0:12:41- so turning that liquid into a solid. - OK.

0:12:41 > 0:12:44- So if you pull those flowers out now...- And when I reveal them...

0:12:44 > 0:12:46Wow, look at that, they're smoking!

0:12:46 > 0:12:49- That's amazing.- So if you just grab the flower petals with your hand,

0:12:49 > 0:12:52- let's see what happens. - Oh, wow!

0:12:52 > 0:12:53That's incredible.

0:12:53 > 0:12:56Listen to the sound of it, they've gone really brittle and fragile.

0:12:56 > 0:13:00- I'm very glad I didn't put my fingers in there!- Yeah!

0:13:00 > 0:13:03OK, so that's what it does to liquid, what does it do to gas?

0:13:03 > 0:13:06Well, let's try that with a gas.

0:13:06 > 0:13:10We've got a balloon here that we prepared earlier.

0:13:10 > 0:13:13- We just blew it up with our breath. - So it's full of air.- Which is a gas.

0:13:13 > 0:13:15So if you want to hold on to the end of that

0:13:15 > 0:13:17- and just put it over the top there. - OK.

0:13:17 > 0:13:20And what I have here is a camera that's going to let us

0:13:20 > 0:13:22see heat, which is great.

0:13:22 > 0:13:26You can't usually see heat but heat energy is in so many things

0:13:26 > 0:13:29and it gives off something called infrared radiation.

0:13:29 > 0:13:31Let's see it used on my crew,

0:13:31 > 0:13:35so if you pan around you can see that ugly lot waving away

0:13:35 > 0:13:39and the warmest parts of their body are white and yellow, and things

0:13:39 > 0:13:43like the cameras, that are cool, are going to be black or dark blue.

0:13:43 > 0:13:46So they're giving off infrared radiation, not harmful,

0:13:46 > 0:13:49but a radiation that the camera detects and turns into colour

0:13:49 > 0:13:52- so we can see it with our eyes. - So let's see what happens

0:13:52 > 0:13:55when we cool down the gas inside this balloon.

0:13:55 > 0:13:57Right, so the balloon is big and full at the moment

0:13:57 > 0:14:00and as the gas is applied it's starting to shrink!

0:14:00 > 0:14:04It's reduced massively in size

0:14:04 > 0:14:06and if I take it out...look at that.

0:14:06 > 0:14:09But almost immediately it's going to start, as the air gets bigger

0:14:09 > 0:14:14again inside and it expands, it's going to get large again.

0:14:14 > 0:14:18- That's lovely.- If I breathe on it...

0:14:18 > 0:14:24Yeah, it's going from a nice dark blue colour and that heat from your

0:14:24 > 0:14:26breathe, the heat energy's going back into the balloon,

0:14:26 > 0:14:29back into the gas, and it's getting bigger and warmer.

0:14:29 > 0:14:32It's all very interesting but it's not destructive enough.

0:14:32 > 0:14:33What are we going to blow up?

0:14:33 > 0:14:36OK, so, Steve, what do you think would happen

0:14:36 > 0:14:40if we put a little bit of liquid nitrogen in the bottom of a bottle,

0:14:40 > 0:14:42put the lid back on, and then heated it up really fast?

0:14:42 > 0:14:45You've got a confined space and the gas is going to expand...

0:14:45 > 0:14:48- I'm guessing a big bang.- Yeah.

0:14:48 > 0:14:51- So, shall we try it?- You are talking my language.- Perfect.

0:14:51 > 0:14:52Let's head round the other side.

0:14:52 > 0:14:55- OK, I guess I'm going to need these ear defenders.- Yeah.- Exactly.

0:14:55 > 0:14:58What we're going to do, we've got a bottle here and we're going

0:14:58 > 0:15:01to put the liquid nitrogen in the bottle, cap it and put it in here.

0:15:01 > 0:15:05- We do have a job for you, if that's OK?- Is it dangerous?

0:15:05 > 0:15:10- A little bit.- That's fine. Danger is my middle name.

0:15:10 > 0:15:14You need to tip all those table tennis balls out of that

0:15:14 > 0:15:16bucket into here, on top of the bottle.

0:15:16 > 0:15:20- Perfect.- And then retreat.- Run away. - OK, that I can definitely do.

0:15:20 > 0:15:23- OK, perfect.- I think we're ready. Here we go.

0:15:23 > 0:15:27- OK.- Liquid nitrogen's going in the bottle.

0:15:27 > 0:15:30And a little bit more.

0:15:30 > 0:15:33- OK, are you ready?- I am ready. - The lid is...on the bottle.

0:15:33 > 0:15:40In it goes. And everyone...stand back because it is going to let rip.

0:15:40 > 0:15:42There it goes!

0:15:42 > 0:15:45Fantastic, well done.

0:15:45 > 0:15:47Ping pong balls bouncing about all over the studio.

0:15:47 > 0:15:50I am very glad I am not going to be clearing that up.

0:15:50 > 0:15:52This is exactly the kind of appliance of science

0:15:52 > 0:15:54we love to see and the kind of thing that gets kids inspired,

0:15:54 > 0:15:56which I'm guessing is exactly what the

0:15:56 > 0:15:59- Edinburgh International Science Festival is all about.- Absolutely.

0:15:59 > 0:16:03The festival this year starts on the 31st of March. It runs for two weeks

0:16:03 > 0:16:06- and it's full of loads of science fun for all the family.- Great stuff.

0:16:06 > 0:16:09Come along, you're going to be able to pull apart a lamb's heart,

0:16:09 > 0:16:12learn how to code a Lego robot,

0:16:12 > 0:16:15or find out what happens inside engines. Loads of really cool stuff.

0:16:15 > 0:16:18- You had me at pulling apart a heart. - Good stuff.- Great.

0:16:18 > 0:16:21Keeping with the frozen theme and also because the Winter Olympics are

0:16:21 > 0:16:25on right now, Lindsey and Radzi are going to go head-to-head on the ice.

0:16:29 > 0:16:31Ice hockey.

0:16:31 > 0:16:34It's one of the most action-packed, fastest sports on the planet.

0:16:34 > 0:16:38It requires loads of power, accuracy, skill and balance.

0:16:38 > 0:16:41Yeah, I'm not sure we have any of those skills.

0:16:41 > 0:16:43- Can you actually ice skate? - Yeah, I'm well good.

0:16:43 > 0:16:45What could possibly go wrong?

0:16:45 > 0:16:49We've been set an ice hockey challenge but in true Blue Peter

0:16:49 > 0:16:51fashion, we have no idea what it is.

0:16:53 > 0:16:55And stop!

0:16:55 > 0:16:57So with the help of some professionals,

0:16:57 > 0:17:00we tried to get to grips with the basics.

0:17:06 > 0:17:07Passing's fun.

0:17:07 > 0:17:09But I want to learn how to dribble.

0:17:10 > 0:17:11Nice.

0:17:13 > 0:17:16While Radzi tries dribbling and shooting,

0:17:16 > 0:17:18I fancy a go in goal.

0:17:22 > 0:17:24Oh, no!

0:17:24 > 0:17:25Radz!

0:17:26 > 0:17:28Whey!

0:17:28 > 0:17:29SHE LAUGHS

0:17:29 > 0:17:33Hey, am I the most graceful goalkeeper in the world?

0:17:33 > 0:17:38- Absolutely...not. - But at least I saved a couple.

0:17:38 > 0:17:39Come on!

0:17:39 > 0:17:41HE STRAINS

0:17:41 > 0:17:43- LAUGHING:- That's not going to work!

0:17:43 > 0:17:45Anyway, enough messing around.

0:17:45 > 0:17:48It's time to find out what our challenge is.

0:17:48 > 0:17:51And to do that we're off to Nottingham

0:17:51 > 0:17:54to meet two GB superstars.

0:17:54 > 0:17:56Guys, it's an absolute pleasure to meet you.

0:17:56 > 0:17:59- Why are you here?- Tonight we've got a friendly against Poland

0:17:59 > 0:18:03- and we thought it'd be good if you stuck around and enjoyed the game. - We'd love to.- Amazing.

0:18:03 > 0:18:07- We thought you were here cos you were going to set us an impossible challenge.- Hold on, hold on.

0:18:07 > 0:18:09We think it'll be a good idea for you guys to

0:18:09 > 0:18:11go in goal for a penalty shoot-out.

0:18:11 > 0:18:13In front of the crowd?

0:18:13 > 0:18:15It's never easy, is it?

0:18:15 > 0:18:20We're going to be taking part in a goalkeeping penalty challenge,

0:18:20 > 0:18:24facing four penalties each. Whoever saves the most, wins.

0:18:24 > 0:18:29And it's all going to be happening in front of 5,000 people

0:18:29 > 0:18:31waiting to see Great Britain in action.

0:18:31 > 0:18:34Have we ever been more out of our depth?

0:18:34 > 0:18:35Thankfully, once we're suited up,

0:18:35 > 0:18:39GB's goalkeeping coach Nathan is here to help.

0:18:39 > 0:18:41Good job.

0:18:41 > 0:18:45Just make sure you're holding your stick at the paddle there. OK.

0:18:45 > 0:18:48And then you want to make yourself as big as you can, take

0:18:48 > 0:18:51away as much net as possible.

0:18:51 > 0:18:53That's it, that's it. OK, ready?

0:18:53 > 0:18:54Yeah.

0:18:54 > 0:18:56You can move!

0:18:56 > 0:18:58I know but you threw a puck at me!

0:19:00 > 0:19:02There we go.

0:19:02 > 0:19:05To have those flying at your face, your body, your arms,

0:19:05 > 0:19:07that's not normal. I'm sweating.

0:19:07 > 0:19:09Right, Radzi's turn.

0:19:09 > 0:19:12Lindsey did all right but now it's time for the pro.

0:19:12 > 0:19:15I say pro, I don't have a clue what I'm doing!

0:19:15 > 0:19:16- Ready?- Yeah!

0:19:18 > 0:19:19Oh!

0:19:19 > 0:19:20It didn't go in.

0:19:20 > 0:19:22OK, ready?

0:19:22 > 0:19:25- There we go.- In the glove! Have a look at that!

0:19:27 > 0:19:29Nathan is going very easy on us.

0:19:29 > 0:19:33When we face a real penalty, good players can do all sorts of tricks.

0:19:33 > 0:19:34I mean, just look at that!

0:19:37 > 0:19:40- How do you think we did?- I think you did a great job. I think, Linds,

0:19:40 > 0:19:44just make sure your glove's always square to the shooter every time,

0:19:44 > 0:19:47and then, Radz, just make sure that

0:19:47 > 0:19:50when the player's coming back with you, you just slowly come back

0:19:50 > 0:19:53and you're kind of not stuck out of position to make that save.

0:19:55 > 0:20:00- So that's it.- We're up against top youth team the Solway Sharks.

0:20:00 > 0:20:02This could get embarrassing.

0:20:02 > 0:20:04That's it, this is us.

0:20:04 > 0:20:08Here we go, we're about to make our GB ice hockey debut.

0:20:08 > 0:20:10I'm so scared!

0:20:12 > 0:20:14All right.

0:20:14 > 0:20:16I'm up first.

0:20:16 > 0:20:19The crowd is loud and the moment the penalty taker sets off,

0:20:19 > 0:20:21I realise I'm in trouble.

0:20:21 > 0:20:23Oh!

0:20:23 > 0:20:25Too good!

0:20:26 > 0:20:28I've got no chance!

0:20:28 > 0:20:31The puck's in the net before I even know what's happened.

0:20:31 > 0:20:32So no save for me.

0:20:34 > 0:20:36Not the best of starts.

0:20:36 > 0:20:40- Good effort. It's my turn now.- Go on!

0:20:40 > 0:20:43I think I just saved that one!

0:20:43 > 0:20:46It wasn't pretty, it wasn't textbook,

0:20:46 > 0:20:48but I did manage to get my stick in front of that one.

0:20:50 > 0:20:53It's 1-0.

0:20:53 > 0:20:56Right, come on, Linds, anything he can do...

0:20:56 > 0:20:59Yes! Moved my stick at the last minute.

0:20:59 > 0:21:01Well done, buddy!

0:21:01 > 0:21:03It's one save all.

0:21:06 > 0:21:08Hey!

0:21:10 > 0:21:13Right, it's time to up my game. The crowd are behind me.

0:21:13 > 0:21:15OK, focus.

0:21:17 > 0:21:20No! That's not how you do it, Radzi!

0:21:20 > 0:21:22He was just too quick across the ice.

0:21:22 > 0:21:25Still, 1-1.

0:21:25 > 0:21:28Oh, my goodness, that's fast.

0:21:28 > 0:21:30Oh!

0:21:30 > 0:21:34These guys are getting quicker. Like Radzi, I'm nowhere near that.

0:21:35 > 0:21:37This is a lot of fun!

0:21:39 > 0:21:41It is but I kind of want to win.

0:21:41 > 0:21:43And to do that I need to do something different.

0:21:45 > 0:21:48That's not how you do it. OK, he's down.

0:21:48 > 0:21:52Radzi fell forward and tripped over one of the people trying to score.

0:21:52 > 0:21:54Radz!

0:21:54 > 0:21:57OK, no-one's hurt. Just my pride.

0:21:57 > 0:21:59But I did manage to save it. 2-1.

0:21:59 > 0:22:02Come on, Lindsey, eye on the puck. Eye on the puck.

0:22:02 > 0:22:04He goes wide.

0:22:04 > 0:22:06And misses!

0:22:06 > 0:22:09I'd like to think I made myself big there and put him off.

0:22:09 > 0:22:11But that would be totally not true.

0:22:14 > 0:22:19So this is it. 2-2 with one penalty left. If I save it, I win.

0:22:19 > 0:22:22Do you know what? I'm going to go for it. I'm off the line...

0:22:22 > 0:22:24Oh, no! Oh, dear!

0:22:24 > 0:22:26Oh, that's embarrassing.

0:22:30 > 0:22:34A draw's a fair result, I reckon.

0:22:34 > 0:22:37And as the Sharks take a lap of honour,

0:22:37 > 0:22:40we're left admiring just how skilful these guys are,

0:22:40 > 0:22:42and how skilful we are not.

0:22:45 > 0:22:48- It was two apiece.- It's a draw.

0:22:48 > 0:22:51- Radz!- There's only one winner and that's ice hockey.- For sure.

0:22:51 > 0:22:54- What a sport!- Go give it a go!

0:22:54 > 0:22:57You'll be better than us!

0:22:57 > 0:22:59CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:22:59 > 0:23:02Thank you. If you loved that you'll love our winter sports special.

0:23:02 > 0:23:05It was on on Saturday but you can still catch it on BBC iPlayer

0:23:05 > 0:23:06so make sure you check it out.

0:23:06 > 0:23:09Steve, I'm sad to say it's nearly the end of the show.

0:23:09 > 0:23:11- Have you enjoyed yourself? - It's been great fun.

0:23:11 > 0:23:14I think the cold theme has totally got me in the mood for the Eiger.

0:23:14 > 0:23:17- Really?- It has. - We're sending you good cold vibes.

0:23:17 > 0:23:20Before you go off to Switzerland, let's announce Spot Shelly.

0:23:20 > 0:23:22Do we have a winner? Where was she?

0:23:22 > 0:23:25She was actually hiding on the bottle of liquid nitrogen

0:23:25 > 0:23:26during the science experiments.

0:23:26 > 0:23:28It's a good one. She's got a little coat on, bless her.

0:23:28 > 0:23:33- And who got her?- It was Turquoise Owl.- Well done.- You got it.

0:23:33 > 0:23:35- Good job. - Speaking of Shelly,

0:23:35 > 0:23:38she's kind of going with you on this expedition, isn't she?

0:23:38 > 0:23:41Amazingly, she's going to be helicoptered to the summit,

0:23:41 > 0:23:43if we make it there, and she's going to be there.

0:23:43 > 0:23:45- That is VIP.- Yeah, it kind of is.

0:23:45 > 0:23:47She's such a diva, I love that.

0:23:47 > 0:23:48That's nearly it for this week's show.

0:23:48 > 0:23:51Make sure you are watching next week cos we're

0:23:51 > 0:23:53launching our Sport Relief challenge.

0:23:53 > 0:23:56We're going to be joined by footballing sensation Chris MD.

0:23:56 > 0:23:59- It's going to be great.- Yes. - And I'm joined by Ben Cajee.

0:23:59 > 0:24:02- Don't forget him. - Loads of football stuff.

0:24:02 > 0:24:07And after the show you can head to Fan Club Live to ask HRVY here

0:24:07 > 0:24:09any questions you might have.

0:24:09 > 0:24:11- What kind of questions?- You can ask me anything and I'll answer it.

0:24:11 > 0:24:14- Like, how's it going to be touring with The Vamps?- Yeah.

0:24:14 > 0:24:17It's going to be amazing. It's going to be performing in front of arenas.

0:24:17 > 0:24:19I'm going to be nervous but it's going to be good.

0:24:19 > 0:24:20- Are you taking the dancers? - Yes, yes.

0:24:20 > 0:24:23Guys, I want you in every week. The dancers are the best.

0:24:23 > 0:24:26OK, we will see you all next week but here with his brand-new single

0:24:26 > 0:24:27it's the wonderful HRVY.

0:24:27 > 0:24:31This is Personal. Thank you, Steve, you've been a legend! Bye!

0:24:31 > 0:24:33CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:24:40 > 0:24:42# I don't know

0:24:42 > 0:24:43# Why'd you do this to me

0:24:43 > 0:24:45# You're so cold

0:24:45 > 0:24:47# You'd be playing like

0:24:47 > 0:24:51# Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

0:24:53 > 0:24:56# I got told

0:24:56 > 0:24:59# Danger follows everywhere you go

0:24:59 > 0:25:01# But I still be like

0:25:01 > 0:25:05# Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

0:25:07 > 0:25:11# This the part where I'm gonna get hurt

0:25:11 > 0:25:15# I never listened but I didn't deserve it

0:25:15 > 0:25:18# I was young and she was my first love

0:25:18 > 0:25:21# So they say that you live and you learn

0:25:21 > 0:25:23# Like yeah

0:25:23 > 0:25:24# She gonna mess with your head

0:25:24 > 0:25:26# Oh, yeah

0:25:26 > 0:25:28# And she'll flirt with your friends

0:25:28 > 0:25:30# Oh, yeah

0:25:30 > 0:25:32# Make you wish you were friends

0:25:32 > 0:25:35# Every time she moves on she says

0:25:35 > 0:25:37# Don't take it personal

0:25:37 > 0:25:39# Don't take it personal

0:25:39 > 0:25:42# Every time she moves on she says

0:25:42 > 0:25:44# Who else knows

0:25:44 > 0:25:47# All my friends are blowing up my phone

0:25:47 > 0:25:49# Something's telling me
