0:12:52 > 0:12:55I tell you something else which is great, which is this.
0:12:55 > 0:12:57Dylan, you've earned your blue badge.
0:12:57 > 0:12:59You were inspired by the experiment last week.
0:12:59 > 0:13:01- And there is Steve. - Yeah, there's Steve Backshall!
0:13:01 > 0:13:03If you're wondering how he's getting on,
0:13:03 > 0:13:07he hasn't started his climb yet, but he will be soon, and all the updates
0:13:07 > 0:13:10will be on the CBBC website. So make sure you check those out.
0:13:10 > 0:13:13That's right, and keep your post coming into the usual address,
0:13:13 > 0:13:14because we absolutely love to see it.
0:13:14 > 0:13:17And you can earn a badge just like this one here.
0:13:17 > 0:13:19Once you've done that... I like this part.
0:13:19 > 0:13:21..you can apply for one of these. Look at that!
0:13:21 > 0:13:23ALL: Whoo!
0:13:23 > 0:13:24It's the diamond badge!
0:13:24 > 0:13:28Just head to the website for all of the details, but remember,
0:13:28 > 0:13:31they are only available during BP's big birthday year!
0:13:31 > 0:13:34- That's right. Hashtag Limited Edish. - Oh, yeah.
0:13:34 > 0:13:37Now, remember, a BP badge can get you into over 200 attractions
0:13:37 > 0:13:39across the UK. ..Maybe do it as Jessie J?
0:13:39 > 0:13:42# F-f-f-f-f-free-ee-ee! #
0:13:42 > 0:13:44As Mary Poppins?
0:13:44 > 0:13:48- PRIMLY: - # For free-ee-ee! #
0:13:48 > 0:13:51- As me? - # For FREE! #
0:13:51 > 0:13:52Yeah, that was good.
0:13:52 > 0:13:54- Fair play.- Linz, can I do an impression?
0:13:54 > 0:13:55- Yeah, go on.- Check this out.
0:13:55 > 0:13:58THEY CHEER
0:13:58 > 0:14:00It is, of course, Radzi!
0:14:00 > 0:14:02- Not quite as good as the real thing. - True.
0:14:02 > 0:14:04Speaking of the little devil Radz,
0:14:04 > 0:14:08before he went to the Winter Olympics, he went to see science
0:14:08 > 0:14:10on an epic scale. This is so cool. Check it out.
0:14:12 > 0:14:14Our universe.
0:14:14 > 0:14:16It's incredible.
0:14:16 > 0:14:22Full of natural wonders that have fascinated us for centuries.
0:14:22 > 0:14:24Like my hair.
0:14:26 > 0:14:30But how much do we actually know about how it all started?
0:14:30 > 0:14:31The world?
0:14:31 > 0:14:34The galaxy! The universe.
0:14:37 > 0:14:42Many scientists believe the universe began with the Big Bang,
0:14:42 > 0:14:46a massive explosion nearly 14 billion years ago.
0:14:46 > 0:14:50And that by recreating the Big Bang,
0:14:50 > 0:14:55they will find out more about how the universe began.
0:14:55 > 0:14:59So how do you recreate the Big Bang?
0:14:59 > 0:15:00OK.
0:15:00 > 0:15:02Bang!
0:15:02 > 0:15:03Nah.
0:15:03 > 0:15:05BANG!
0:15:05 > 0:15:06Still not enough.
0:15:06 > 0:15:08I know. Ahem!
0:15:09 > 0:15:12BA-A-A-A-ANG!
0:15:12 > 0:15:13No.
0:15:13 > 0:15:16I'm going to need something a lot bigger.
0:15:17 > 0:15:21Thankfully then, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research
0:15:21 > 0:15:26built the world's biggest machine to do just that.
0:15:26 > 0:15:30It's called the Large Hadron Collider, and is run by a team
0:15:30 > 0:15:35of thousands of technicians, engineers and scientists.
0:15:35 > 0:15:38Scientists like Sudan.
0:15:38 > 0:15:43So, the Large Hadron Collider is a 27km particle accelerator
0:15:43 > 0:15:47built 100 metres under the ground of the French and Swiss countryside.
0:15:47 > 0:15:50This is the largest science experiment ever.
0:15:50 > 0:15:54And I've come to Switzerland to pay it a visit.
0:15:55 > 0:16:00And here it is, the Large Hadron Collider, and this thing does...
0:16:02 > 0:16:04..OK, I don't really know. Can I have some help, please?
0:16:04 > 0:16:06The Large Hadron Collider
0:16:06 > 0:16:11accelerates particles at very high speeds,
0:16:11 > 0:16:13close to the speed of light, in fact, and then bashes them together
0:16:13 > 0:16:18really, really fast and then we see what happens from those collisions.
0:16:18 > 0:16:22So, the idea is that, by crashing particles into each other,
0:16:22 > 0:16:26this machine will recreate lots of tiny big bangs,
0:16:26 > 0:16:27which can be studied.
0:16:27 > 0:16:32And I've been allowed access to find out more about how it works.
0:16:33 > 0:16:38When I was in school, I loved it in science when they made it simple,
0:16:38 > 0:16:41so with that in mind, what actually is a particle?
0:16:41 > 0:16:45Everything around us - your hat, even us - if we break it down
0:16:45 > 0:16:50into the smallest possible bit, that is what we call a particle.
0:16:50 > 0:16:52Just to give you an idea of how small that really is,
0:16:52 > 0:16:56- if you take a grain of sand...- Yes. - ..which you know is very small...
0:16:56 > 0:17:00- Yeah.- ..there are 100 million million million particles in it.
0:17:00 > 0:17:06So that's 100 with 18 zeros of particles.
0:17:08 > 0:17:10In a grain of sand.
0:17:10 > 0:17:11That is so small.
0:17:11 > 0:17:14To study something so small,
0:17:14 > 0:17:18you need some pretty big scientific equipment.
0:17:18 > 0:17:23And when I say big, I mean the size of the three double-decker buses,
0:17:23 > 0:17:25and that's the first stop on my tour.
0:17:28 > 0:17:31Sudan, this is the biggest science experiment
0:17:31 > 0:17:34I have ever seen in my entire life.
0:17:34 > 0:17:37OK. So I know particles are really small.
0:17:37 > 0:17:39So why is this so big?
0:17:39 > 0:17:42This piece of equipment is like a camera, a digital camera.
0:17:42 > 0:17:44You can imagine cameras, you know,
0:17:44 > 0:17:46you sometimes hear 10 megapixels, 20 megapixels.
0:17:46 > 0:17:51This is a 100 million pixel camera,
0:17:51 > 0:17:54taking photos 40 million times a second.
0:17:58 > 0:18:03Right now, this massive experiment is closed for maintenance,
0:18:03 > 0:18:07so I'm going to areas that few people are ever allowed to visit.
0:18:07 > 0:18:09We are 100 metres underground,
0:18:09 > 0:18:12and the scale of this place is off the charts.
0:18:12 > 0:18:15So the guys here don't always walk to get around,
0:18:15 > 0:18:18they have come up with a rather genius method,
0:18:18 > 0:18:23not just any old push-bike - oh, no, no, no. What is this, Sam?
0:18:23 > 0:18:25Hey, Radzi! This is an electric bike that I use to get around,
0:18:25 > 0:18:29because there's such long distances between points in the LHC.
0:18:29 > 0:18:31It looks like an awful lot of fun.
0:18:31 > 0:18:33And what about yourself, what's your job?
0:18:33 > 0:18:36I'm an engineer here. It's not just physicists who work at CERN,
0:18:36 > 0:18:39there are many, many different professions here.
0:18:39 > 0:18:41Engineers look after, fix,
0:18:41 > 0:18:44maintain and design new parts of the LHC.
0:18:44 > 0:18:48Actually, that variety is brilliant for you at home,
0:18:48 > 0:18:51because if you would one day like to work here, you could.
0:18:51 > 0:18:54Well, Sam, I won't hold you up, off you go on your awesome bike.
0:18:54 > 0:18:56See you later!
0:18:58 > 0:19:04The Large Hadron Collider is so big, it spreads beneath two countries.
0:19:04 > 0:19:06But why is it so big?
0:19:06 > 0:19:07And why is it a circle?
0:19:07 > 0:19:11Well, scientist Alex is going to demonstrate.
0:19:11 > 0:19:13That means we need our safety specs.
0:19:13 > 0:19:14Absolutely.
0:19:14 > 0:19:17We are using liquid nitrogen to cool special magnets.
0:19:17 > 0:19:21This changes how they work and keeps our Blue Peter badge
0:19:21 > 0:19:23on the circular track.
0:19:23 > 0:19:25- And this is a small circle.- Yep.
0:19:25 > 0:19:29- I know the Large Hadron Collider is a really big circle.- Mm-hm.
0:19:29 > 0:19:31Is it similar?
0:19:31 > 0:19:33It's the same general idea
0:19:33 > 0:19:36of trying to get the particles to go round on themselves,
0:19:36 > 0:19:38so that we don't have to build a straight line
0:19:38 > 0:19:40that just wouldn't fit on planet Earth.
0:19:40 > 0:19:44So the magnets help bend it and keep it inside that circle.
0:19:44 > 0:19:46That's exactly right.
0:19:46 > 0:19:50The particles need to travel at nearly the speed of light,
0:19:50 > 0:19:54and the circle means they can spin round and round,
0:19:54 > 0:19:56getting faster and faster.
0:19:59 > 0:20:02- It's been an absolute pleasure. - Me too.
0:20:02 > 0:20:04Do you know what? Science is awesome.
0:20:06 > 0:20:09The people working here are trying to make discoveries
0:20:09 > 0:20:11that could change the way we see the universe,
0:20:11 > 0:20:14and it's been a privilege to meet them.
0:20:15 > 0:20:19You are clearly very passionate. How much do you enjoy your job?
0:20:19 > 0:20:21I absolutely love my job, Radz.
0:20:21 > 0:20:24I am here in the world's largest scientific laboratory,
0:20:24 > 0:20:26really pushing boundaries of knowledge,
0:20:26 > 0:20:29trying to find out questions that humanity has been seeking
0:20:29 > 0:20:31since the dawn of time, I would say.
0:20:33 > 0:20:36Who knows what they and this mighty machine
0:20:36 > 0:20:39might discover in the future?
0:20:39 > 0:20:43This place has genuinely blown my mind, and the reason for that
0:20:43 > 0:20:46is because one of life's biggest questions
0:20:46 > 0:20:51is how life itself started, and we are finding out that answer
0:20:51 > 0:20:53because of what happens inside there,
0:20:53 > 0:20:56which is why we have left them with a Blue Peter plaque.
0:20:56 > 0:20:58This plaque will be kept here
0:20:58 > 0:21:01to celebrate Blue Peter's 60th birthday.
0:21:01 > 0:21:05What a place and what an unforgettable day.
0:21:07 > 0:21:10I love when Radzi wears a hard hat. That's making me miss him.
0:21:10 > 0:21:12It would take the average person
0:21:12 > 0:21:15five hours to walk around that collider. It's big.
0:21:15 > 0:21:16It certainly is.
0:21:16 > 0:21:21That's 16½ miles or, get this, 33,500 steps.
0:21:21 > 0:21:22Whoa!
0:21:22 > 0:21:25Yeah, I know. It brings us nicely on to our 2018 Sport Relief challenge,
0:21:25 > 0:21:28because Blue Peter and Match Of The Day: Kickabout
0:21:28 > 0:21:31- are coming together...- We are merging.- We are - merging...
0:21:31 > 0:21:33..to collect your steps for Sport Relief.
0:21:33 > 0:21:35It's got a name, we're calling this the Mega Mileathon,
0:21:35 > 0:21:38and we're going to try and collect...are you ready for it?
0:21:38 > 0:21:39- Go on.- A million steps!
0:21:39 > 0:21:41- Yes, that's right.- That's a lot.
0:21:41 > 0:21:42That's a lot of steps, so obviously,
0:21:42 > 0:21:44we need your help. We need you to get involved.
0:21:44 > 0:21:46The way you can do that is get online. Head to the website...
0:21:49 > 0:21:52- And then download a trainer. You have a few to choose from.- You do.
0:21:52 > 0:21:54You can even pick this one. It's like a football boot.
0:21:54 > 0:21:56I coloured this in this morning.
0:21:56 > 0:21:59I went for West Ham colours. It's not really claret and blue though,
0:21:59 > 0:22:00it's more like pink and aqua.
0:22:00 > 0:22:02Yes, it's jazzy, and I like it.
0:22:02 > 0:22:04- But you can decorate... - How many miles are you doing?
0:22:04 > 0:22:0650. I've gone for 50. Yeah, I know, it was big.
0:22:06 > 0:22:09You can decorate your boot or trainer
0:22:09 > 0:22:11in any way that you like, make it unique.
0:22:11 > 0:22:14Now, speaking of how you're going to get these miles, the steps,
0:22:14 > 0:22:17- you don't have to run. You can walk, you can cycle, you can swim.- Scoot.
0:22:17 > 0:22:19You can wheel, you can scoot, you can, I don't know,
0:22:19 > 0:22:21salsa and shake your way around. It doesn't matter.
0:22:21 > 0:22:24- I like that.- As long as you're not in the car or on the bus,
0:22:24 > 0:22:26because that obviously doesn't count as miles.
0:22:26 > 0:22:31We're going to convert those steps into an average number of miles
0:22:31 > 0:22:34and add it to this, the Sport Relief Totaliser!
0:22:34 > 0:22:36- Oh, yeah!- It's glorious!
0:22:36 > 0:22:39- Now, Linz...- Yes. - There are some big numbers on here.
0:22:39 > 0:22:43- Yeah...- It's fair to say we're going to need your help.
0:22:43 > 0:22:46You need to send everything into us by 21st March.
0:22:46 > 0:22:48- Get involved.- Do get involved.
0:22:48 > 0:22:51And that's not it, Radzi and I are getting involved as well.
0:22:51 > 0:22:53We're doing a Mega Mileathon challenge between us
0:22:53 > 0:22:56with some BP fans, which is going to be tough.
0:22:56 > 0:22:58And if you want to see how we get on, check that out on 27th March.
0:22:58 > 0:23:01It's our Sport Relief show, it's going to be great.
0:23:01 > 0:23:04- And you're converting miles into steps.- It's all going to go on here.
0:23:04 > 0:23:05It's very, very cool.
0:23:05 > 0:23:07- I wish that I could add some steps right now.- Yeah.
0:23:07 > 0:23:11It's a good job we can play a game, because welcome back, ChrisMD!
0:23:11 > 0:23:13- Here he is. - APPLAUSE
0:23:13 > 0:23:15Right, Chris, we need your help now.
0:23:15 > 0:23:18We reckon you're pretty good with the football, pretty good knowledge,
0:23:18 > 0:23:21so it's time to play Blue Peter Target Tekkers!
0:23:21 > 0:23:22- Here we go.- Let's do it.
0:23:26 > 0:23:30Dear me, had to relocate quickly there.
0:23:30 > 0:23:31Chris, are you ready?
0:23:31 > 0:23:32This is going to be a fun game.
0:23:32 > 0:23:35- You look ready. - I might need a football.
0:23:35 > 0:23:36Yeah, you grab a football.
0:23:36 > 0:23:38While you do that, let me explain how it works,
0:23:38 > 0:23:41because on this net over here, we've given you six targets.
0:23:41 > 0:23:43Each target has a different word on it.
0:23:43 > 0:23:46I'm going to ask you some questions, not too hard,
0:23:46 > 0:23:50and you have got to smash the ball into the net at the right answer.
0:23:50 > 0:23:52- Think that sounds all right? - Yeah, that sounds very easy.
0:23:52 > 0:23:54Well, let's look at this guy,
0:23:54 > 0:23:57because my glamorous assistant Ben is on the treadmill.
0:23:57 > 0:23:59- I've started.- And you're trying to get those steps up,
0:23:59 > 0:24:01so how many are you on at the moment?
0:24:01 > 0:24:04- Not very many.- So basically, Chris, we need your help,
0:24:04 > 0:24:06because for every one that you get right,
0:24:06 > 0:24:09we're going to be cranking up the speed on the treadmill
0:24:09 > 0:24:12and Ben will have to run really fast to add his steps to the totaliser.
0:24:12 > 0:24:15Have I been clear? I don't even know what I'm saying.
0:24:15 > 0:24:16Run like the wind, basically.
0:24:16 > 0:24:18- When you hear this whistle... - On you go.
0:24:18 > 0:24:20WHISTLE BLOWS
0:24:20 > 0:24:22..then it's all over and time is up. So shall we get started?
0:24:22 > 0:24:25Yeah. I can't wait to see him running in those jeans.
0:24:25 > 0:24:28We're live, you're going to be good.
0:24:28 > 0:24:31OK, ready? True or false, Qatar is hosting the 2018 Fifa World Cup.
0:24:31 > 0:24:33- Oh, it's no, it's... It's false. - Go on, Chris.
0:24:33 > 0:24:35He has gone with his heart. He nearly got it.
0:24:35 > 0:24:37Who won the 2017 FA Cup Final?
0:24:37 > 0:24:40- 2017, that's going to be... - Come on, Chris.
0:24:40 > 0:24:42- Oh, no!- He's missed Arsenal!
0:24:42 > 0:24:45Who will win the 2018 FA Cup Final?
0:24:45 > 0:24:48- Not Arsenal!- Say it again, sorry? - Who will win it?
0:24:48 > 0:24:50- Not Arsenal, you're out. - Definitely Arsenal.
0:24:50 > 0:24:52OK, he thinks Arsenal, but they are out.
0:24:52 > 0:24:53I will go faster anyway.
0:24:53 > 0:24:56What programme are you appearing on right now? ... Peter.
0:24:56 > 0:24:57It's definitely Blue.
0:24:57 > 0:25:00Yay! Get that speed up!
0:25:00 > 0:25:03True or false, Stoke and former England striker Peter Crouch
0:25:03 > 0:25:04is six foot nine inches tall.
0:25:04 > 0:25:06I think that's going to be true. Arsenal.
0:25:06 > 0:25:09It's false, but you nearly got it, so turn the speed up anyway.
0:25:09 > 0:25:10WHISTLE BLOWS
0:25:10 > 0:25:11Time is up.
0:25:11 > 0:25:12I'm getting there.
0:25:12 > 0:25:14That was stressful, to say the least.
0:25:14 > 0:25:16Ben, how many steps are we on?
0:25:16 > 0:25:19I'm on about a tenth of a mile, which is about 200 steps, maybe 250.
0:25:19 > 0:25:22- It's not enough.- OK, good maths. - Thank you.- Not quite enough to get
0:25:22 > 0:25:25us to our first light there, which is 100,000, which is why
0:25:25 > 0:25:27it's so important that you lot at home get involved.
0:25:27 > 0:25:29Please, all the details that you need...
