0:01:05 > 0:01:08To get you guys in the mood, we are going to be doing some flatland BMX

0:01:08 > 0:01:10with this guy, Matti Hemmings.

0:01:10 > 0:01:12He is actually number one in the UK at the moment

0:01:12 > 0:01:15and I'm going to give it a try later in the show.

0:01:15 > 0:01:17And you are going to smash it out of the park

0:01:20 > 0:01:23All I will say is you will not want to miss it.

0:01:23 > 0:01:24We're introducing it to you today.

0:01:25 > 0:01:29Now, here is our lovely Shelley. She is hiding somewhere in the show.

0:01:29 > 0:01:31If you spot her, jump onto Fan Club Live

0:01:31 > 0:01:34and we'll shout out who spotted her later in the show.

0:01:34 > 0:01:36Talking about shouting out, actually,

0:01:36 > 0:01:39last week was a pre-recorded show, so we couldn't announce

0:01:39 > 0:01:41who was the winner of Spot Shelley, but here's a clue.

0:01:43 > 0:01:45Can you work it out?

0:01:45 > 0:01:47It's Orange Summery Seal!

0:01:47 > 0:01:49Well done!

0:01:49 > 0:01:51Fantastic job! Brad, let's walk this way.

0:01:51 > 0:01:54There is something very cool that I've got to show you.

0:01:54 > 0:01:57Blue Peter have teamed up with Match Of The Day Kickabout

0:01:57 > 0:02:00and Sport Relief to bring you the Mega Mileathon Challenge.

0:02:00 > 0:02:01It's really simple.

0:02:01 > 0:02:03All the people at home are going to do is complete miles.

0:02:03 > 0:02:05Those miles get converted into steps

0:02:05 > 0:02:08and those steps go on this totaliser.

0:02:08 > 0:02:10But how do you do it? I hear you ask. Very, very simply.

0:02:10 > 0:02:13You jump onto the Blue Peter website,

0:02:13 > 0:02:15you print out a trainer template.

0:02:15 > 0:02:16Then you cut it out, you decorate it

0:02:16 > 0:02:19and then you tell us what's going to be on your pledge,

0:02:19 > 0:02:21just like Humayah from Birmingham did.

0:02:21 > 0:02:25She is going to do nine miles, which, by the way, is 18,000 steps.

0:02:25 > 0:02:28Or like Archie from Lincoln who has pledged to do 26 miles,

0:02:28 > 0:02:30which is 52,000 steps.

0:02:30 > 0:02:32Well done, dude!

0:02:32 > 0:02:34Please remember, you don't have to run that mile -

0:02:34 > 0:02:36you can walk it, swim it, cycle it, scoot it,

0:02:36 > 0:02:39you can even wheel it. Whatever, it's all about being active.

0:02:39 > 0:02:41But as for us right here in the Blue Peter studio,

0:02:41 > 0:02:43I've got one question, Brad.

0:02:43 > 0:02:45How many steps do you think we will reveal

0:02:45 > 0:02:47for the first time on this totaliser?

0:02:47 > 0:02:49I've got a lot of faith, I think we are going to go high.

0:02:49 > 0:02:51I'm going to go 600,000.

0:02:51 > 0:02:53- 600,000?!- At least!

0:02:53 > 0:02:55OK, I thought you were going to go a lot lower than that.

0:02:55 > 0:02:56But let's find out, then.

0:02:56 > 0:02:59In three, two, one...

0:03:03 > 0:03:07CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:03:07 > 0:03:09That is amazing!

0:03:09 > 0:03:11So our total is... Hang on a second.

0:03:11 > 0:03:14- Bradley, we can't...- We are going to need a bigger board than this.

0:03:14 > 0:03:16- I know.- Shall we get the design team on it?

0:03:16 > 0:03:18Let's get the design team in.

0:03:18 > 0:03:20You guys at home, stay updated, keep with us

0:03:20 > 0:03:23and you will see the running total as we go through.

0:03:23 > 0:03:26Emma and Sean, what a team of destiny that is!

0:03:26 > 0:03:28But this is all for a very good cause.

0:03:28 > 0:03:30It's for Sport Relief and, Lindsey, it's over to you.

0:03:35 > 0:03:38Sport Relief is changing young lives right here in the UK

0:03:38 > 0:03:40and I've come to London

0:03:40 > 0:03:43to see just one way it's making a big difference.

0:03:43 > 0:03:45Bend your arm.

0:03:45 > 0:03:47These girls are all part of Muslim Girls Fence,

0:03:47 > 0:03:50an amazing project set up to change the lives of girls in the area.

0:03:52 > 0:03:55Some Muslim girls can find themselves stereotyped

0:03:55 > 0:03:58and even the victims of discrimination

0:03:58 > 0:04:00because of their gender and faith.

0:04:00 > 0:04:03This project aims to challenge how the world sees them

0:04:03 > 0:04:05and it hopes to build their confidence.

0:04:08 > 0:04:11Amanah is one of the project coordinators

0:04:11 > 0:04:13and helps run the sessions here.

0:04:13 > 0:04:16- Amanah, how are you doing?- Hi. - It's really exciting to be here.

0:04:16 > 0:04:18So, tell me a bit about this project.

0:04:18 > 0:04:20Why and how does fencing change lives?

0:04:20 > 0:04:23Fencing is an elite sport and it's great to give these girls,

0:04:23 > 0:04:25who come from quite diverse backgrounds,

0:04:25 > 0:04:28an opportunity to try out the sport and take part in it.

0:04:28 > 0:04:31And what kind of differences do you see in the girls?

0:04:31 > 0:04:35- You must notice some change there? - Definitely. 100%.

0:04:35 > 0:04:37They really enjoy the fencing.

0:04:37 > 0:04:39It's an incredibly complex and highly skilled sport

0:04:39 > 0:04:42so they love learning all of that, but also, they really enjoy

0:04:42 > 0:04:45talking about how Muslim girls and girls in general

0:04:45 > 0:04:47might be perceived by other people

0:04:47 > 0:04:50and they really enjoy the opportunity to build friendships

0:04:50 > 0:04:53- and to build up the confidence as well.- Listen, it's not that

0:04:53 > 0:04:56I don't like standing here chatting to you, but that looks great,

0:04:56 > 0:04:59- so can I get in there and get involved?- Definitely, go for it!

0:04:59 > 0:05:00I'm going to do it!

0:05:03 > 0:05:06A few weeks ago, Radzi gave fencing a try

0:05:06 > 0:05:08when he was awarding purple badges.

0:05:09 > 0:05:11But now it's my turn.

0:05:11 > 0:05:13Watch out, Radz - here come the girls.

0:05:15 > 0:05:19But I quickly realise that fencing is a lot harder than it looks.

0:05:19 > 0:05:22Not sure I'm ever going to be world-class material.

0:05:22 > 0:05:24- Can you do that?- Yeah, you block it out of the way.

0:05:24 > 0:05:28The funding from Sport Relief goes towards the fencing equipment

0:05:28 > 0:05:29as well as the coaching

0:05:29 > 0:05:33and it means the project can run workshops to help support the girls.

0:05:35 > 0:05:39Do you know what? That's actually really, really hard work.

0:05:39 > 0:05:42I think I need to go for a rest, a bit of a sit-down and a chat.

0:05:44 > 0:05:46I'm meeting Sarah and Seher.

0:05:46 > 0:05:48They've been coming here for two years.

0:05:48 > 0:05:51Well, girls, firstly, well done on the Blue Peter badges.

0:05:51 > 0:05:53- Thank you.- It's a big day, isn't it? - Yes, definitely.- Very.

0:05:53 > 0:05:56So, let's talk about the fencing. Why do you love coming here?

0:05:56 > 0:05:59What is it about fencing that is so fun and exciting?

0:05:59 > 0:06:02I think it's because it's more of a different sport.

0:06:02 > 0:06:04It's not something you would usually see every day.

0:06:04 > 0:06:07It's usually, "Oh, I'm going to basketball club or football club,"

0:06:07 > 0:06:09it's not, "Hey, I'm going to fencing club!"

0:06:09 > 0:06:10Have you made new friends, met new people?

0:06:10 > 0:06:13Yeah, I've definitely made friendships with people

0:06:13 > 0:06:15that I maybe wouldn't have before.

0:06:15 > 0:06:19I feel like I've got a new kind of different thing under my belt.

0:06:19 > 0:06:22It must help kind of build your confidence.

0:06:22 > 0:06:23Has it done that?

0:06:23 > 0:06:25Are you different to what you were like before?

0:06:25 > 0:06:28Yeah, so there is one bit of fencing that everyone talks about

0:06:28 > 0:06:30and links it to life. It's lunging.

0:06:30 > 0:06:32So it's when you sort of go for something.

0:06:32 > 0:06:34So in life, go for something

0:06:34 > 0:06:37even if there is something in front of you, just go for it.

0:06:38 > 0:06:40I used to shy away from public speaking,

0:06:40 > 0:06:42but after taking part with the fencing,

0:06:42 > 0:06:44I've become much more confident with that

0:06:44 > 0:06:46and last year I won a poetry competition.

0:06:46 > 0:06:47Yes!

0:06:47 > 0:06:49So we need to lunge more!

0:06:49 > 0:06:52We do need to lunge more! It's a good life skill.

0:06:53 > 0:06:56Now that you've started fencing and you enjoy it,

0:06:56 > 0:06:58do you think it's something that you're going to keep up, keep doing?

0:06:58 > 0:07:01Yes, I definitely do want to continue when I'm older.

0:07:01 > 0:07:05It's really nice to have people to look up to such as Ibtihaj Muhammed,

0:07:05 > 0:07:07the Olympic fencer in America.

0:07:07 > 0:07:10She's black, she's a Muslim and she's a woman,

0:07:10 > 0:07:13and it's just inspirational, as a young Muslim girl,

0:07:13 > 0:07:17to be able to look up to somebody who is doing so well.

0:07:17 > 0:07:20Well, come back on Blue Peter if you get a gold medal in fencing.

0:07:20 > 0:07:22- Promise?- Yeah, definitely!

0:07:24 > 0:07:27It's clear from talking to Sarah and Seher that this project

0:07:27 > 0:07:29is building their confidence

0:07:29 > 0:07:32and inspiring them to go for whatever they want.

0:07:32 > 0:07:35This is just one way that Sport Relief is helping

0:07:35 > 0:07:38to change people's lives across the nation.

0:07:38 > 0:07:40And that's exactly what you are getting behind

0:07:40 > 0:07:42when you pledge those miles for Sport Relief.

0:07:42 > 0:07:45So if you haven't already, what are you waiting for?

0:07:45 > 0:07:46Get involved.

0:07:47 > 0:07:50CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:07:50 > 0:07:53And that right there is the power of Sport Relief.

0:07:53 > 0:07:56- Brad, it's a good job you're wearing all of that safety kit.- I know.

0:07:56 > 0:07:58- You are an honorary Blue Peter presenter.- Yeah.

0:07:58 > 0:08:01And so, for your challenge, next you will be taking on this.

0:08:05 > 0:08:08CHEERING AND WHOOPING

0:08:37 > 0:08:39Go on, Matti! Go on, son!

0:09:10 > 0:09:12CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:09:12 > 0:09:15Keep that applause coming, give it up for Matti Hemmings!

0:09:15 > 0:09:17CHEERING

0:09:17 > 0:09:18That was beyond comprehension.

0:09:18 > 0:09:20What did we witness there?

0:09:20 > 0:09:23You guys witnessed something called flatland BMX,

0:09:23 > 0:09:25which is all about doing tricks on a flat, level area.

0:09:25 > 0:09:27There's no ramps, there's obstacles.

0:09:27 > 0:09:29It's a bit like artistic cycling or break dancing.

0:09:29 > 0:09:32It has been described as ballet on a bike as well.

0:09:32 > 0:09:34And it's also out of breath on a bike, I imagine, as well.

0:09:34 > 0:09:37Yeah, there is a lot of...

0:09:37 > 0:09:39..movement, there's a lot going on, spinning around,

0:09:39 > 0:09:40so you get a bit tired.

0:09:40 > 0:09:42This is not your first rodeo.

0:09:42 > 0:09:45You are the number-one flatland BMXer in the UK.

0:09:45 > 0:09:46How did you start?

0:09:46 > 0:09:47I started when I was about 11,

0:09:47 > 0:09:51so I started quite late into BMXing, but I went to a BMX event,

0:09:51 > 0:09:54saw some guy spinning around, doing some crazy and impressive tricks

0:09:54 > 0:09:57and I just wanted to do that, so I was like, "Yeah, let's do that."

0:09:57 > 0:10:00You've absolutely smashed it out of the park, it's fair to say.

0:10:00 > 0:10:03Brad, it's at this point that you come into the frame.

0:10:03 > 0:10:04Go on, Brad!

0:10:04 > 0:10:07Brad is going to attempt his first ever Blue Peter challenge.

0:10:07 > 0:10:09- Are you all right?- Yeah.

0:10:09 > 0:10:12Before we kick off, Matti, any top tips? What's worth knowing?

0:10:12 > 0:10:15Top tips, it's really important, make sure you've got your helmet on.

0:10:15 > 0:10:17You should also be doing it somewhere safe, nice environment.

0:10:17 > 0:10:20As we're in the studio, it's perfectly safe, you are ready to go.

0:10:20 > 0:10:23- You've got pads on as well, which is great.- I was born for this, man!

0:10:23 > 0:10:26Also, there's no traffic here, which is worth bearing in mind.

0:10:26 > 0:10:27As a philosopher once said,

0:10:27 > 0:10:29health and safety never takes a day off here.

0:10:29 > 0:10:31That is a fact. Are you up for it, Brad?

0:10:31 > 0:10:34I am. I am more than ready. Let's do it.

0:10:34 > 0:10:36So, first we're going to do something called a track stand.

0:10:36 > 0:10:38The bike is on the spot, there is no moving around,

0:10:38 > 0:10:41you are basically going to put your foot into the wheel,

0:10:41 > 0:10:42- two hands on the handlebars.- OK.

0:10:42 > 0:10:44- We jump up.- OK.

0:10:44 > 0:10:47And you balance on the spot.

0:10:47 > 0:10:50Start me off nice and easy, why don't you, Matti!

0:10:50 > 0:10:51Right, here we go.

0:10:51 > 0:10:54We'll give you a little bit of a helping hand.

0:10:54 > 0:10:55So, two hands on the handlebars.

0:10:55 > 0:10:57Go on, man!

0:10:57 > 0:11:00- Here we go. - This does not feel natural.

0:11:00 > 0:11:03- OK, here we go.- Hands off?

0:11:03 > 0:11:07Little bit of pressure on that left foot for me.

0:11:07 > 0:11:10And hopefully... A little bit more pressure on the left.

0:11:11 > 0:11:13- Nearly!- Oh...- So close!

0:11:13 > 0:11:16- You can do this.- There we go. - That is tough!

0:11:16 > 0:11:17Go on, Brad!

0:11:17 > 0:11:19A little bit of pressure on that left foot for me.

0:11:19 > 0:11:21And... Oh, he's there! He's there!

0:11:21 > 0:11:25CHEERING

0:11:25 > 0:11:26He's totally done it!

0:11:26 > 0:11:28OK, are you ready for another one?

0:11:28 > 0:11:31- I think so.- OK, here we go, so the next one,

0:11:31 > 0:11:33we're going to start doing some travelling on this one,

0:11:33 > 0:11:36- so we're going to start moving on the bike.- OK.

0:11:36 > 0:11:39So this time you are going to put your right foot on the right there

0:11:39 > 0:11:40and then we are going to scoot around,

0:11:40 > 0:11:42so treat it like a little bit of a scooter.

0:11:42 > 0:11:45Left foot to the front peg and lift up your hand.

0:11:45 > 0:11:48- I like that. Alan Shearer. - You can go no hands you want,

0:11:48 > 0:11:51- but let's see if one-handed... - I'm going to try one-handed first!

0:11:51 > 0:11:53Right, OK. Here we go, here we go.

0:11:53 > 0:11:56PRODUCTION TEAM SHOUT ENCOURAGEMENT

0:12:00 > 0:12:03CHEERING

0:12:03 > 0:12:06Matti, could we have one more and make it even harder?

0:12:06 > 0:12:09Yeah, if you could you give me a challenge now?!

0:12:09 > 0:12:12OK, so far, we have been using the pegs, we have been using the pedals.

0:12:12 > 0:12:14We are going to step it up and we are going to use the frame.

0:12:14 > 0:12:17- OK?- OK.- So, we are going to scoot around again, but this time

0:12:17 > 0:12:20you are going to lift that right foot onto the frame and...

0:12:20 > 0:12:23- He's just showing off now!- No!

0:12:23 > 0:12:26- Are you ready?- OK, OK.

0:12:26 > 0:12:28Go on, Brad! Go on, Brad!

0:12:28 > 0:12:30- OK.- Here we go.

0:12:30 > 0:12:31So...

0:12:33 > 0:12:35He's up, he's up, he's up!

0:12:37 > 0:12:40CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:12:40 > 0:12:41Brad, come on over.

0:12:41 > 0:12:42Thank you very much.

0:12:42 > 0:12:45You absolutely achieved the business there, my friend.

0:12:45 > 0:12:47I had a very good teacher. Thank you, my friend.

0:12:47 > 0:12:49Matti, I have no idea how you do what you do.

0:14:48 > 0:14:51- of The Vamps ever. - I like to think so, yes.

0:14:51 > 0:14:53Well, we're going to put it to the test in a game that we call...

0:14:53 > 0:14:56FANFARE BLARES

0:14:58 > 0:15:01Now, Brad, this game is very, very simple.

0:15:01 > 0:15:04We have five Vamps fans, AKA Vampettes,

0:15:04 > 0:15:07waiting to perform for you their favourite Vamps song.

0:15:07 > 0:15:09All you have to do is tell us what song it is.

0:15:09 > 0:15:10- Sound easy?- Easy!

0:15:10 > 0:15:13However, we are going to crank up the hardness just a tad because

0:15:13 > 0:15:16we are going to mute the sound, so you will not be able to hear it.

0:15:16 > 0:15:19- That sounds quite hard now.- You have to lip-read and go off dance moves.

0:15:19 > 0:15:21They had better be good dance moves is all I'm saying.

0:15:21 > 0:15:23I think they will be. They are good fans.

0:15:23 > 0:15:27But if you get three points, you will earn yourself and be crowned...

0:15:27 > 0:15:29- BOOMING VOICE:- Vamp Champ!

0:15:29 > 0:15:31- Are you ready?- I think so.

0:16:05 > 0:16:06Right, one point in the bag.

0:16:06 > 0:16:09So, for the second Vampette, we have Simran.

0:16:13 > 0:16:16- Look at this set she has made! - I know, she's got the guitar.

0:16:17 > 0:16:18I'm trying my best.

0:16:21 > 0:16:25Oh, OK, I'm struggling here, so I'm going to take a punt.

0:16:25 > 0:16:28Go for a guess, let's find out what you reckon.

0:16:28 > 0:16:30Somebody To You, maybe?

0:16:30 > 0:16:31Somebody To You you've gone for.

0:16:31 > 0:16:33Let's find out if you are correct.

0:16:35 > 0:16:37MUSIC: Kung Fu Fighting by The Vamps

0:16:37 > 0:16:38INCORRECT BUZZER

0:16:38 > 0:16:40Way off!

0:16:40 > 0:16:42It wasn't Simran, it was my glasses.

0:16:42 > 0:16:44- She was awesome. - She nailed it.

0:16:44 > 0:16:46Another Blue Peter badge holder. So it was Kung Fu Fighting.

0:16:46 > 0:16:48One point still on the board, two more to go.

0:16:48 > 0:16:50Next up, it's Lukas, Ellie and Neve.

0:17:03 > 0:17:06They've practised this! Look at it the choreography!

0:17:06 > 0:17:08Oh, attitude!

0:17:09 > 0:17:11I'm really struggling to find this one.

0:17:15 > 0:17:19- Wake Up.- He's got confidence, he's got a smile on his face.

0:17:19 > 0:17:21Let's find out if he is correct.

0:17:21 > 0:17:24MUSIC: Wake Up by The Vamps

0:17:24 > 0:17:27Course it is!

0:18:05 > 0:18:07I know, I'm sorry, I'm letting a lot of people down.

0:18:07 > 0:18:09OK, Brad, it's just one left.

0:18:09 > 0:18:13If you get this right, you get the crown. If not, there is no crown.

0:18:13 > 0:18:15- Let's find out how Brad does. - I need that crown.

0:18:18 > 0:18:19Look at Bella go.

0:18:26 > 0:18:28Oh, I've got it, I've got it, I think I've got!

0:18:28 > 0:18:31- OK.- There was a little movement there, I've got it.

0:18:31 > 0:18:33- He's going for...- Somebody To You.

0:18:33 > 0:18:34I'm locking in Somebody To You.

0:18:34 > 0:18:37- Is that your final answer? - Final answer.

0:18:37 > 0:18:38OK, let's see.

0:18:38 > 0:18:41MUSIC: Somebody To You by The Vamps

0:18:41 > 0:18:43CHEERING

0:18:45 > 0:18:48Brad, which means, we can now officially crown you...

0:18:48 > 0:18:50Vamp Champ!

0:18:50 > 0:18:51Thank you.

0:18:51 > 0:18:53Thanks, Tom, for your fab voice.

0:18:53 > 0:18:56And here we have the official coronation

0:18:56 > 0:18:58of Sir Bradley of Vamp!

0:19:00 > 0:19:01Thank you, thank you very much.

0:19:01 > 0:19:04Now, Brad, I have to say, this isn't your first time on Blue Peter,

0:19:04 > 0:19:06- is it?- It isn't, no. - You came on as a band member

0:19:06 > 0:19:08and now you are an honorary Blue Peter presenter

0:19:08 > 0:19:11and the way you absolutely smashed the challenge

0:19:11 > 0:19:12with the BMX flat landing,

0:19:12 > 0:19:18we would now like to award you your very own silver Blue Peter badge.

0:19:18 > 0:19:21- I am honoured, I am honoured. - There you are, my friend.

0:19:21 > 0:19:23Everyone, thank you, guys.

0:19:25 > 0:19:26My pleasure.

0:19:26 > 0:19:29Well, Brad got that because he has done his bit for Blue Peter

0:19:29 > 0:19:32and me and Lindsey have done our bit for Sport Relief.

0:19:34 > 0:19:36To get us over the finishing line

0:19:36 > 0:19:40for this year's Sport Relief Mileathon, Lindsey and I

0:19:40 > 0:19:41have got something up our sleeves.

0:19:41 > 0:19:47We are going all in on a final push for an extra one million steps.

0:19:47 > 0:19:49But it's not just one Sport Relief mile we are running.

0:19:49 > 0:19:54No, no, this is a marathon, which means 26 one-mile runs.

0:19:54 > 0:19:57It is going to be tough, but it's not just Radzi and I doing this,

0:19:57 > 0:20:02we are being joined by as many mileathoners as we can find.

0:20:02 > 0:20:05We have called in loads of you to cover 26 individual miles

0:20:05 > 0:20:08in just four days.

0:20:08 > 0:20:11But what is the big deal with a mile? I hear you ask.

0:20:11 > 0:20:12Well, Radzi has been to find out.

0:20:12 > 0:20:14- Have I?- Yeah.

0:20:16 > 0:20:19It was the Romans who first measured the mile

0:20:19 > 0:20:22by sticking a sword into the ground as they marched.

0:20:23 > 0:20:25Fast forward to the early 1900s

0:20:25 > 0:20:29and time it took to run the distance became an obsession.

0:20:29 > 0:20:34Some thought it was impossible to run a mile in less than four minutes

0:20:34 > 0:20:40until a man called Roger Bannister did just that in 1954.

0:20:40 > 0:20:43And that historic mile was completed

0:20:43 > 0:20:46right here on this very finishing line.

0:20:46 > 0:20:50And there you have it, your quick guide to the mile.

0:20:50 > 0:20:53Roger Bannister's four-minute mile still lives on

0:20:53 > 0:20:58as one of the greatest sporting achievements ever.

0:20:58 > 0:21:00As we are about to cover quite a few miles,

0:21:00 > 0:21:05Lindsey went to find out what it takes to run at that record pace

0:21:05 > 0:21:10and she began by meeting European youth gold medallist George Mills.

0:21:10 > 0:21:12- George, good to meet you. - Hi, you too.

0:21:12 > 0:21:13Let's talk about the mile.

0:21:13 > 0:21:16Why is it an exciting distance for you to run?

0:21:16 > 0:21:18Well, first of all, a mile is an extremely famous event.

0:21:18 > 0:21:20People know how far a mile is

0:21:20 > 0:21:23and also you can run it as hard or as easy as you want,

0:21:23 > 0:21:26so it's appealing to all ages, from children to adults.

0:21:26 > 0:21:28How fast can you go?

0:21:28 > 0:21:32My 1,500 metre time is 3 minutes 44 seconds.

0:21:32 > 0:21:34And a mile is just a bit longer than that, isn't it?

0:21:34 > 0:21:37Yeah, it is not too far, so hopefully I could dip under

0:21:37 > 0:21:39the four-minute barrier, like Roger Bannister.

0:21:40 > 0:21:44George can run that sort of time because he is a trained athlete,

0:21:44 > 0:21:49but Lindsey and I won't be doing our miles anywhere near four minutes.

0:21:49 > 0:21:50It is quite fast.

0:21:51 > 0:21:52But why is that?

0:21:52 > 0:21:55Well, the answer is science

0:21:55 > 0:21:59and Dr John Jakeman knows a thing or two about the science of sport

0:21:59 > 0:22:01and he was Lindsey's next stop.

0:22:01 > 0:22:02Running a mile can be very, very difficult

0:22:02 > 0:22:05or it can be very, very easy. One of the things that happens

0:22:05 > 0:22:09when we exercise is that our body uses fat as a fuel.

0:22:09 > 0:22:12The body needs oxygen to break the fat down and provide that fuel.

0:22:12 > 0:22:14And that's why you kind of start panting

0:22:14 > 0:22:16and you do get more tired as well.

0:22:16 > 0:22:18So, the harder you work, the more you have to breathe

0:22:18 > 0:22:21because you need to fuel the exercise much faster.

0:22:21 > 0:22:23We can also measure the amount of gas

0:22:23 > 0:22:25you breathe in and breathe out during exercise

0:22:25 > 0:22:27and we'll see that, as you work harder,

0:22:27 > 0:22:28you will breathe in and out more.

0:22:28 > 0:22:30Does that mean I am getting on the treadmill?

0:22:30 > 0:22:32- I'm afraid it does. - OK, I'll do it for science.

0:22:32 > 0:22:34Let's give it a go.

0:22:35 > 0:22:37Now, it might look like Lindsey

0:22:37 > 0:22:40is getting ready to go deep-sea diving.

0:22:40 > 0:22:42Fear not, Linds, no sharks here.

0:22:42 > 0:22:46But this kit actually measures the amount of oxygen her body is using.

0:22:50 > 0:22:52She begins at a slower pace.

0:22:55 > 0:22:58Two minutes at that speed, let's take it up.

0:22:58 > 0:22:59Uh-oh.

0:23:08 > 0:23:11This is the air that you breathed out at two minutes.

0:23:11 > 0:23:14- OK, not too much.- Not too bad.

0:23:14 > 0:23:16Then if we compare that to two minutes at a harder intensity...

0:23:16 > 0:23:19- Oh, look! I nearly filled the bag! - You've nearly felled the bag.

0:23:19 > 0:23:21That is a lot of air and a lot of hard work.

0:23:23 > 0:23:27So, the faster you move, the more oxygen you need.

0:23:28 > 0:23:32Highly trained athletes can move oxygen around their bodies quicker

0:23:32 > 0:23:36and more efficiently and that helps them run a four-minute mile.

0:23:38 > 0:23:41But I wonder if Lindsey could run at that sort of speed.

0:23:41 > 0:23:45Wouldn't it be great if there was just some sort of way to find out?

0:23:46 > 0:23:48Are you ready to do this?

0:23:48 > 0:23:50No. Yes! Yes, of course I am.

0:23:50 > 0:23:54- OK, so the speed is going to go up. - That is going quite fast, isn't it?

0:23:54 > 0:23:57The wind that is coming off this treadmill!

0:23:57 > 0:23:58OK.

0:23:58 > 0:24:00I've got to get on it?

0:24:00 > 0:24:01Oh-ho!

0:24:01 > 0:24:03SHE LAUGHS

0:24:03 > 0:24:04Lift yourself up with your hands.

0:24:04 > 0:24:07- I don't know if I... I'm really scared.- You'll be fine.- OK.

0:24:07 > 0:24:10SHE SHRIEKS

0:24:10 > 0:24:13OK, go for it. Go, go, go, go!

0:24:13 > 0:24:15Keep going as long as you can.

0:24:16 > 0:24:18I don't know if I can go faster.

0:24:18 > 0:24:21When you're ready to stop, lift your hands to the side and lift off.

0:24:21 > 0:24:23OK, stop, stop.

0:24:23 > 0:24:25Oh, my goodness!

0:24:26 > 0:24:28That wasn't even the four-minute mile pace, was it?

0:24:28 > 0:24:31- I was slightly under. - It was a little bit under.

0:24:31 > 0:24:33No, sorry, that's ridiculous.

0:24:33 > 0:24:35That is really, really fast.

0:24:35 > 0:24:37We are doing 26 one-milers.

0:24:37 > 0:24:39I'm not going to go at that pace. No way.

0:24:41 > 0:24:44For our Sport Relief Mega Mileathon Challenge,

0:24:44 > 0:24:49we will be travelling to the home of the four-minute mile in Oxford.

0:24:49 > 0:24:52Along the way, we will be stopping off to move 26 miles

0:24:52 > 0:24:55with as many of you as possible.

0:24:55 > 0:24:58In honour of Roger Bannister's iconic four minutes,

0:24:58 > 0:25:02we will be doing it all in four days.

0:25:02 > 0:25:04Our push for the Blue Peter Mega Mileathon

0:25:04 > 0:25:06is going to be a huge undertaking.

0:25:06 > 0:25:12And it's all to encourage you to pledge your miles for Sport Relief.

0:25:13 > 0:25:16CHEERING

0:25:16 > 0:25:19Four words - do not miss it.

0:25:19 > 0:25:20It is so much fun.

0:25:20 > 0:25:24Lindsey and myself are attempting 26 miles, all for Sport Relief.

0:25:24 > 0:25:27But, Brad, I want to know how many steps

0:25:27 > 0:25:31we have managed to accomplish for Sport Relief on this totaliser.

0:25:31 > 0:25:33So, earlier on, you saw us

0:25:33 > 0:25:36smash through our original target of a million.

0:25:36 > 0:25:37We decided to raise the bar a little.

0:25:37 > 0:25:42We've gone from one million, all the way up to 50 million, people!

0:25:42 > 0:25:44OK. Brad, can we stop there?

0:25:44 > 0:25:46- Can we bring it down? - It's staying there.

0:25:46 > 0:25:47Are you joking?

0:25:47 > 0:25:50I can't believe we got to one million, let alone 50!

0:25:50 > 0:25:52- I've got faith. - OK, you've got faith.

0:25:52 > 0:25:55Let's find out how many steps we have on the Blue Peter totaliser
