:00:18. > :00:23.Coming up on Blue Peter, we speak to Helen Ashes battles through the

:00:23. > :00:28.extreme conditions of Antarctica. We revealed the Hollywood secrets

:00:28. > :00:33.behind Steven Spielberg's new Blockbuster epic War Horse.

:00:33. > :00:43.I would never do that! Find out how you can help Doctor

:00:43. > :01:02.

:01:02. > :01:09.Hello! Welcome to a new Blue Peter for a brand new year. It is a new

:01:09. > :01:14.day, a new time, and we have got a jam-packed show. You have probably

:01:14. > :01:19.noticed that somebody is missing. That is Helen. She is undertaking

:01:19. > :01:23.her biggest challenge yet, 11,000 miles away in the South Pole. She

:01:23. > :01:30.will attempt to travel that distance using it Kite Cumiskey and

:01:30. > :01:33.it's no bite. It does not look too far on here, but if I put a map of

:01:33. > :01:39.the UK next to where she is travelling, it puts it into

:01:39. > :01:45.perspective. She has got a massive task. We are very excited about

:01:45. > :01:52.this, because although she is 11,000 miles away, we think we have

:01:52. > :02:02.established a connection where we can speak to her. I am here! I can

:02:02. > :02:03.

:02:03. > :02:13.hear you! How are you? This is amazing! It is absolutely

:02:13. > :02:13.

:02:13. > :02:21.unbelievable. Nice come up blue-sky. Or you can see is white. It is like

:02:21. > :02:25.being on top of this frozen ocean. It is supposed to be minus 48! Your

:02:25. > :02:32.freezer at home is minus 18! How do you manage in that kind of

:02:32. > :02:39.temperature? You have to keep moving and you need lots of clothes.

:02:39. > :02:45.The more that your hands and fingers move, the better. I am

:02:45. > :02:52.constantly moving my hands, because otherwise they go really painful,

:02:52. > :02:59.and you run the risk of frostbite. It is dangerously cold. What about

:02:59. > :03:06.simple things like going to the toilet? That is a nightmare. I am

:03:06. > :03:11.wearing three pairs of trousers and a harshness. -- harmless. Sometimes,

:03:11. > :03:21.I do not bother. But you can forget luxuries. I do not even have a

:03:21. > :03:23.

:03:23. > :03:28.hairbrush! I do not even have a halt at brash! Y idea doing this? -

:03:28. > :03:33.- why it or you doing this? I was challenged to see if I could get to

:03:33. > :03:37.the South Pole. It is for Sport Relief. It is tough, but I am

:03:37. > :03:44.determined. I have met lots of people whose lives have been

:03:44. > :03:54.changed by Sport Relief. Your money makes a difference. What about

:03:54. > :03:57.

:03:57. > :04:03.breaking a world record? Yes, pleaded not set out to do what, it

:04:03. > :04:09.just happened. -- we did not set out to do it. The wind was strong,

:04:09. > :04:14.so we covered a lot of miles. Halfway through the afternoon, they

:04:14. > :04:18.said we could try to cover 100 kilometres and set a new world

:04:18. > :04:23.record, and we did. It has been officially confirmed, you have

:04:23. > :04:29.broken the world record, so congratulations. I know you are

:04:29. > :04:36.freezing! It has been so nice to be able to see you. It has been a

:04:36. > :04:43.pleasure. Come back in one piece. Hello to everybody, thank you for

:04:43. > :04:49.one of the lovely messages! Keep them coming! We will see you soon.

:04:49. > :04:53.If you want to sign up for a Sport Relief mile, go to the website. I

:04:53. > :04:59.am them to be welcoming some special co-presenter is to keep me

:04:59. > :05:04.company. Today, I am joined by Joanna -- Diana Vickers. She rose

:05:04. > :05:14.to fame when she reached the semi- finals of the X Factor. Her debut

:05:14. > :05:14.

:05:14. > :05:18.single went to number one on the UK singles chart. Last year, she broke

:05:19. > :05:23.into the world of fashion, by launching her first clothing range.

:05:23. > :05:29.She is back in the studio, recording new tracks, which she is

:05:29. > :05:39.hoping to showcase on tour later this year. Jump-off your sofas, it

:05:39. > :05:42.

:05:42. > :05:45.is Diana Vickers! Hello! Hello! Welcome! It is so good to see year.

:05:45. > :05:50.Normally, you would get a blue Peter badge for appearing, but

:05:50. > :05:58.because you have already got one, you will get yourself a Blue Peter

:05:58. > :06:05.badge. It is a sticker on one! Shot put it here. Let's talk about

:06:05. > :06:10.how well you of the wind. You have your own fashion and make-up ranges.

:06:10. > :06:20.Yes, I have been away, writing and recording my new album, I am so

:06:20. > :06:20.

:06:20. > :06:25.excited. Yes, my collection is doing really well. This year is

:06:25. > :06:32.looking pretty good, I am very excited. Lots of people are excited

:06:32. > :06:41.that you on the show. One person says, what is your favourite

:06:41. > :06:46.animal? I really want one of those small dogs, they are really tiny,

:06:46. > :06:53.but they do not get bigger than the size of a teacup. But I do love

:06:53. > :06:59.Lions. Monkeys! They are fascinating to watch. That is not

:06:59. > :07:04.the answer I was expecting! One person says, I love your songs, if

:07:04. > :07:10.you could start in a film, what would the film be? I would have to

:07:10. > :07:17.be a James Bond girl, that would be the ultimate. Somebody said there

:07:17. > :07:21.would be a film about the Muppets. I would love to be in doubt! -- to

:07:21. > :07:27.be in that! You can be an Olympic athlete at

:07:27. > :07:32.the age of 14, in the Youth Olympic Games. Two years ago, Singapore

:07:32. > :07:36.hosted the first Games, but tomorrow, the first Winter Youth

:07:36. > :07:45.Olympic Games starts in Austria. The aim is to find the world's best

:07:45. > :07:55.young winter sportsmen and women. 15 winter sports, over 1000 young

:07:55. > :07:56.

:07:56. > :07:59.athletes, and 10 days packed full It is the first ever Winter Youth

:07:59. > :08:02.Olympic Games, and it promises to be the ultimate competitive

:08:02. > :08:08.training ground for the best young or winter sports men and women in

:08:08. > :08:13.the world. Aged between 14 and 18, athletes from 70 nations have

:08:13. > :08:19.travelled to Austria, to Innsbruck, which has twice hosted the Winter

:08:19. > :08:26.Olympic Games. Young competitors will strive to make their mark.

:08:26. > :08:36.Their dream, to win one or more of the 372 Olympic medals up for grabs.

:08:36. > :08:37.

:08:37. > :08:40.The stage is set, let the games Some of these athletes have been

:08:40. > :08:44.training for years to get here, and some of them are only found out in

:08:44. > :08:51.the last few months they had a place. We have been following three

:08:51. > :09:01.of the UK hopefuls, and one of there is Katie Summerhayes.

:09:01. > :09:06.

:09:06. > :09:10.-- one of them. The Double Cork. The switch. These

:09:10. > :09:17.are just some of the gravity- defying of moves in freestyle

:09:17. > :09:22.skiing. With some of the core list tricks on stone, it is one of the

:09:22. > :09:29.15 sports represented at the Winter Olympic Games. Hoping to represent

:09:29. > :09:33.Great Britain this year, Katie Summerhayes. I love all of the

:09:33. > :09:37.freestyle skiing, the way you can express yourself, being able to do

:09:37. > :09:43.tricks in the air, it makes it better. I have been trying to

:09:43. > :09:48.qualify for over a year. To be able to go to the Olympics would be

:09:48. > :09:54.awesome. There are five different types of freestyle skiing. She is

:09:54. > :09:59.hoping to represent a GP in the half pipe. It is a hot cylinder

:09:59. > :10:03.shape course, did into the hill. Using speed gained on the slopes,

:10:03. > :10:08.they perform acrobatic tricks as they leave the room of the pipe.

:10:08. > :10:14.The aim is to perform challenging and impressive aerial tricks as

:10:14. > :10:20.perfectly and with as much hype as possible. The challenge is being

:10:21. > :10:28.able to keep my height consistent. If you fall, it is gone, so you

:10:28. > :10:33.have to be consistent. Falling can happen. If you take a tumble on the

:10:33. > :10:37.ice, it is not just your place in the competition that is at risk.

:10:37. > :10:42.is dangerous, because we are flying through the air, that is why we are

:10:42. > :10:48.wearing helmets, just in case. Learning such a specialist and

:10:48. > :10:53.dangerous scale takes total passion and dedication. What motivates me

:10:53. > :10:58.to train it is the thought of being able to say I am an Olympian. If I

:10:59. > :11:03.did not love it, I would not put the hard work and time into it. I

:11:03. > :11:08.do have to miss going out with my friends, but I love it, I am very

:11:08. > :11:12.competitive. As the UK does not have much snow, she spends as much

:11:12. > :11:20.time as she can training on skis clubs abroad. When she is at home,

:11:20. > :11:24.the best place for her to practise is at her nearest Snow Dome. I try

:11:24. > :11:31.to train as hard as I can, because I want to become the best athlete

:11:31. > :11:37.that I can. I do not think anybody has understood how she has worked,

:11:37. > :11:44.the amount of effort and training, she has put her heart into it.

:11:44. > :11:48.have worked to make it better, I have to try my best. Her training

:11:48. > :11:52.is only the half of it. If she is going to perform their real moves

:11:52. > :11:57.in the half pipe at the Games, she has to perfect it them on a

:11:57. > :12:02.trampoline. This is one of the most important parts, making sure my

:12:02. > :12:11.vision is fine, so when we do a trick, we know where we are, so I

:12:11. > :12:17.can land and keep up my speed. to focus on. -- focus on where you

:12:17. > :12:22.are going to land. It is scary! It is better to land on a trampoline

:12:22. > :12:30.than on the ice. After this hard work, she still has to go the extra

:12:30. > :12:35.mile to try to make sure of her place. If you 1000 miles, to be

:12:35. > :12:39.exact, to fit in as much training on the snow and she can. It would

:12:39. > :12:44.be amazing, all of my hard work would have paid off. Will all of

:12:44. > :12:50.her efforts be worth it when she gets back from America? She is keen

:12:50. > :13:00.to find out whether her Olympic dream will become a reality. I have

:13:00. > :13:00.

:13:00. > :13:10.got my letter. Open it! Many congratulations on your selection!

:13:10. > :13:11.

:13:11. > :13:15.Fantastic! Welburn! -- well don't! We were on edge, but now I have

:13:15. > :13:22.told all of my friends and family, they are happy for me, and I am

:13:22. > :13:27.looking forward to getting out there to do my best.

:13:27. > :13:33.I had the privilege of taking photos of her a few months ago, and

:13:33. > :13:37.she stood out a mile, she was amazing. It looks fascinating.

:13:37. > :13:42.is nice to confirm that she has made it through to the Olympics. We

:13:42. > :13:46.will catch up with her next week. She has chosen to be the flag-

:13:46. > :13:55.bearer at the opening ceremony tomorrow.

:13:55. > :14:00.Still to come,... See your very own Doctor Who script come to life.

:14:00. > :14:04.Children of Great Britain, rescue us! Find out how right here.

:14:04. > :14:09.And, it is the film everybody is talking about, so we sent Michelle

:14:09. > :14:19.Keegan to meet its biggest dot on the red carpet. He thinks the

:14:19. > :14:20.

:14:20. > :14:24.microphone is fit! -- it is food! The stars keep on coming. Next

:14:24. > :14:34.Wednesday, I am hosting a Blue Peter star-gazing special about the

:14:34. > :14:34.

:14:34. > :14:37.Now is the time to get your questions answered. Professor Brian

:14:37. > :14:42.Cox will be joining me on our special show, so head to the Blue

:14:42. > :14:46.Peter message boards where you can send in questions and make sure you

:14:46. > :14:51.watch the special next Wednesday on 18th January. Now a few months ago

:14:51. > :14:56.you might have gone to the cinema to see spiel speels film The

:14:56. > :14:59.Adventures of Tintin. Tomorrow, sees the release of his brand-new

:14:59. > :15:09.blockbuster epic warhorse so we sent Michelle Keegan to its red

:15:09. > :15:10.

:15:10. > :15:15.carpet launch. His, you may know me as Tina on coreration street. Today

:15:15. > :15:21.I am here in London's Leicester square, at the premier of Steven

:15:21. > :15:25.Spielberg's latest film warhorse to meet its four legged star, Joey.

:15:25. > :15:29.Adapted from a novel, the film follows a story of Joey, a young

:15:29. > :15:33.horse taken from his loving owner Albert, to help British soldiers

:15:34. > :15:41.fight in the First World War. on Joey. I know you have it. Come

:15:41. > :15:44.on boy. Come on. Eight different horses were used to play the adult

:15:44. > :15:54.joyy as each horse had been taught different tricks. Such as

:15:54. > :16:02.responding to Albert's call. Bucking on cue. And even running

:16:02. > :16:05.through explosions. In spite of all the sparkle on set and here at the

:16:06. > :16:11.premier tonight, the story of a real life warhorse is far from

:16:11. > :16:17.glamorous. Six million horses were sent into bat at the outbreak of

:16:17. > :16:21.World War I in 1914. Many that were injured were treated by the blue

:16:21. > :16:26.cross hospitals, that had been set up on the front line. Sadly, horse

:16:26. > :16:33.casualties in France alone added up to 50,000. Thankfully British

:16:33. > :16:37.horses are no longer needed for battle, but nearly 100 years on the

:16:37. > :16:44.blue cross help recovery of injured, abused and homeless animals and

:16:44. > :16:49.today I am here in Oxfordshire to meet a special horse called Paris.

:16:49. > :16:53.Paris is just one of the 6,500 animals rescued by the blue cross

:16:54. > :16:57.every year. She was found abandoned and very ill. Suffering from

:16:57. > :17:01.several diseases including pneumonia. Gemma you work at the

:17:01. > :17:05.blue cross what is Paris's story? Paris was found at the side of the

:17:05. > :17:11.road. It is a mystery what happened to her. She was taken in I be the

:17:11. > :17:16.RSPC na. A poorly state. She was dangerously ill and close to death.

:17:16. > :17:19.She got treated with numerous antibiotics to make Herbert.

:17:19. > :17:23.what does the rehabilitation process involve? She was very

:17:23. > :17:27.nervous when she arrived. She didn't trust humans at all, which

:17:27. > :17:31.you can't blame her. We have spent a lot of time building her

:17:31. > :17:35.confidence, getting her used to people again. So once Paris is back

:17:35. > :17:39.to full health, the blue cross can start training her up to become a

:17:39. > :17:44.riding pony. One of the training techniques they use is called

:17:44. > :17:47.lunging. It is a technique where Emily stands in the middle. She is

:17:47. > :17:51.teaching her to move forward off commands, and slow up from commands

:17:51. > :17:54.as well. So what does the future hold for her? It is really good

:17:54. > :17:59.news. We have had somebody call the centre and is interesting to see

:17:59. > :18:03.her, so hopefully she will be going to a new home soon. Looks like

:18:03. > :18:09.Paris will get the happy ending she deserves. Whether Joey the warhorse

:18:09. > :18:15.has a happy ending. Well, you will have to watch the film to find out.

:18:15. > :18:18.Tonight, at least one of the film's Joeys is looking pleased because he

:18:19. > :18:28.has arrived on the red carpet at the London premier and the crowd

:18:29. > :18:30.

:18:30. > :18:34.can't get enough of him. His Joey. Are you enjoying the premier today?

:18:34. > :18:39.He thinks mimic row phone is food! While he mingles with his adoring

:18:39. > :18:42.fans I find out what the rest of cast think of him. When you work

:18:42. > :18:48.with animals it is going to be tricky. They will want to fart in

:18:48. > :18:52.the middle of your close up, or stamp on your foot when you are

:18:52. > :18:55.trying do an emotional scene. They are all great. They are the most

:18:55. > :18:59.amazing animals in the world. seem to be able to respond

:18:59. > :19:03.emotionally, to what is happening in a scene. They understand how you

:19:03. > :19:09.are feeling. If you are nervous, they feel nervous for you, if you

:19:09. > :19:13.are excited they get excited. eight horses playing Joey it took a

:19:13. > :19:18.Hollywood superdirector to pull it off. How did you get all the horses

:19:18. > :19:25.looking like Joey, the exact same? Some of it was done with really

:19:25. > :19:29.good make up. We use it on actors and on the horses. Are they all

:19:29. > :19:32.real horses. 98% of the movie is all with real horses. Only three

:19:32. > :19:38.shots that are not real horses because it would have been too

:19:38. > :19:42.dangerous to use the horses. One of those shots jumping over the tanks

:19:42. > :19:45.Falling into the trench. I would never do that to a real horse.

:19:45. > :19:51.just spoke to Steven Spielberg! This is the best day ever! And just

:19:51. > :19:56.when I think my day can't get better, the Duke and Dutchest --

:19:56. > :19:59.Duchess of Cambridge arrive. I have seen William and Kate and

:19:59. > :20:04.interviewed Steven Spielberg, but the highlight is seeing a horse

:20:04. > :20:12.walk down the red carpet. Brilliant! I wonder if it gets to

:20:12. > :20:15.watch the film? Yes, he must do. They will sit him in the royal

:20:15. > :20:22.horse box. That is terrible. Lame joke. Let us talk about something

:20:22. > :20:25.exciting. We are massive fans of Doctor Who on the show. Last year,

:20:25. > :20:29.they launched an in-- incredible competition that gave you the

:20:29. > :20:34.chance to write a script for the Time Lord itself. Thousand s of you

:20:34. > :20:43.got involved and the winners got see their script made into an

:20:43. > :20:48.actual Doctor Who special episode. That is amazing. Take a look.

:20:48. > :20:54.What happened? Long story. Nice hair. You should keep it. It is

:20:54. > :20:59.more sciencey. I don't feel so good. Will you drop me off at home.

:20:59. > :21:02.was great. The good news is the doctor thinks you are so talented

:21:02. > :21:06.he will run the same competition again this year. This is the chance

:21:06. > :21:11.for you to write a script for a one off Doctor Who special. In fact

:21:11. > :21:16.hang on a second. Can you hear the TARDIS? I am getting a transmission

:21:17. > :21:21.here. Ahoy there. Blue Peter. Amy. Rory, we will be all right. I have

:21:21. > :21:26.got us on Blue Peter. They are great at making things, which is

:21:26. > :21:34.handy because we are trapped in the land of fiction, nasty place and

:21:34. > :21:39.utterly empty. Look. The only way to escape from here is if someone

:21:39. > :21:44.thinks of an adventure, think. Go on. Primary school-children of

:21:44. > :21:48.Great Britain. Rescue Amy and me, and Rory, from the land of fiction

:21:48. > :21:54.by thinking of an adventure of Olympic proportions. I am sending

:21:54. > :22:01.you more information now. Hurley, you only have until the 16th March

:22:01. > :22:04.to rescue us, you are our only hope. I could try asking Tracy Beaker!

:22:04. > :22:09.be honest if the TARDIS lands in the dumping ground there would be

:22:09. > :22:14.some adventure. Maybe you have your own idea. If you want to get

:22:14. > :22:18.involved, there is a few things you need to know. You need to be aged

:22:18. > :22:25.between nine and 11. You need to have three mates and write your

:22:25. > :22:29.script as a team. Speak to your teachers so they can enter your

:22:29. > :22:34.school. You have until 16th March. Before you start writing make sure

:22:34. > :22:38.you check out the full details and go to the Blue Peter website and

:22:38. > :22:43.click on the link. We were talking about a young lady called Katie

:22:43. > :22:46.Summerhayes who is an incredible skier. We can go live to Innsbruck,

:22:47. > :22:53.we have another bit of technology, Sonali is out there with Katie,

:22:53. > :22:59.Sonali, how is it going? Hello there Barney. Yes, I am with Katie.

:23:00. > :23:05.She is here with me now. First congratulations for making it out

:23:05. > :23:11.here to the Winter Youth Olympic Games. How excited are you. I am so

:23:11. > :23:17.excited. Represented Team GB is a dream come true. You have only just

:23:17. > :23:22.found out you are flag bearer, how honoured are you? They voted for me

:23:22. > :23:26.and I haven't known them for 24 hours so I am excited. Good luke

:23:26. > :23:29.with the competition and for the opening ceremony. I am loving the

:23:29. > :23:33.technology, that is happening live by the way. Because it's a New Year,

:23:33. > :23:39.there are loads of cool new shows starting and one is a brand-new

:23:40. > :23:44.comedy called the 4.00 Club. It is about two brothers. One is a

:23:44. > :23:50.naughty schoolboy and the other is his teacher. You don't wave at me,

:23:50. > :23:54.or look at me. Are you solid on that. Chill your beans. No calling

:23:54. > :23:59.me bruv. People can't know we are brothers. I promise not to

:23:59. > :24:04.embarrass you more than two or three times a day. All right. All

:24:04. > :24:08.right. I'll stay out the Josh zone. Make sure you do because I know

:24:08. > :24:14.where mum keep yours baby photos. You don't want those getting in the

:24:14. > :24:21.wrong hands. And we have one of the stars here today. Everyone, as he

:24:22. > :24:27.makes his smokey entrance it is Doc Brown. Hello. Welcome to the show.

:24:27. > :24:33.Good to see you. Welcome. How are you? Fine, thank you. So your

:24:33. > :24:37.character is a teacher but he also has another talent. Yes, he fancies

:24:37. > :24:43.himself as a bit of a rapper. As does his little brother, which adds

:24:43. > :24:47.to a lot of the comedy, and the drama of the show. But your not

:24:47. > :24:52.necessarily acting because you have real life experience of teaching

:24:52. > :24:56.kids how to rap. I taught some of the kids in the show how to do the

:24:56. > :25:00.basic,, and I have rapped since I was a youngster. So you would be

:25:00. > :25:04.the perfect person to give tips. Where would you tell someone to

:25:04. > :25:06.start? I would say the very first thing is to feel like you have

:25:07. > :25:10.something important to say, you know, that is the starting point.

:25:10. > :25:17.Something personal that means something to you. That is a very

:25:17. > :25:22.good tip. So, well, as he is such a rap master we couldn't resist

:25:22. > :25:26.asking him to create an exclusive rap about 2012. Are you ready to

:25:26. > :25:29.rap. Always. Please take your position in the Blue Peter

:25:29. > :25:34.performance yae, so a few things remember. It is something that has

:25:34. > :25:42.to be important do you and you need to have a bit of rithle. I am not

:25:42. > :25:45.the expert, Doc Brown is. Here he is with his amazing rap. This is

:25:45. > :25:51.Doc Brown, live and direct from the Blue Peter studio, for 2012. Check

:25:51. > :25:56.this out. They told me that any New Year's resolution dream, was mad,

:25:56. > :26:00.to be the only rap we are a Blue Peter badge. I relish the challenge.

:26:00. > :26:04.This is the task I got. Seeing as the year 2012 is only beginning, I

:26:04. > :26:09.can rap about what we hope to see in it. First of all the four clock

:26:09. > :26:13.club it has a guy who is funny, good looking and is smarter than

:26:13. > :26:17.your father. Cooler than Helen Skelton's toes in Antarctica. If

:26:17. > :26:21.that is not enough you got board, this year One Direction are on tour.

:26:21. > :26:30.I might get lucky this time, they might travel in one direction and

:26:30. > :26:35.stay there. The JLS tour is one to watch, did you know it stands for

:26:35. > :26:42.just love sucks. Justin Bieber is 18. We celebrate Charles Dickens at

:26:42. > :26:45.200. Do you buy for a guy who's 200. The CBC channel turns ten. I

:26:45. > :26:49.remember when it was born whereinically and blue and we

:26:49. > :26:54.washed it in a sink. Here is another celebration, you will see

:26:54. > :26:59.the keen's o Queen's anniversary, is Diamond Jubilee, it is cool and

:26:59. > :27:03.important, you get a couple of extra days off school. Football,

:27:03. > :27:08.European Championship, I wonder how bad England will lose. Stay cool

:27:08. > :27:14.for the Olympics, if moaning is a sport we can win this. Autumn comes

:27:14. > :27:18.round, hooray we are going back to school. There is fun stuff like

:27:19. > :27:23.Hallowe'en. You might see films you haven't seen, like Frankenweenie,

:27:23. > :27:28.The Hobbit or Madagascar 3. Before you know it it will start to get

:27:28. > :27:35.dark early. Then the clocks go back and winter has begun, I guess the

:27:35. > :27:38.time moves fast when you're having fun. It's 2012 I say enjoy it. If

:27:38. > :27:42.this doesn't earn a Blue Peter badge I'll be disappointed. You

:27:42. > :27:47.can't be disappointed. There is your badge. Let us take a look at

:27:48. > :27:53.what is happening on next week's show. We are excited to have the
