:00:10. > :00:14.We are mad about pets on today's Blue Peter. We will be finding out

:00:14. > :00:24.if Barney is a top dog and we will be welcoming some rather special

:00:24. > :00:40.

:00:40. > :00:45.guests to our new home for the Hello. Now Barney the man has gone

:00:45. > :00:50.off to learn his lines for panto. I have swapped him Tor a new co-

:00:50. > :00:54.presenter, this fella! It is Thomas the guinea pig. Thomas, we will

:00:54. > :00:58.have a lovely time. I thought I would fill the studio with four-

:00:58. > :01:04.legged friends. Have a look around here. We will meet these guys later.

:01:04. > :01:10.To tell us about each of them, I have enlisted the help of Joe

:01:10. > :01:15.Inglis. Joe Inglis has been vet for over 15 years. He works in a

:01:15. > :01:20.practice in Gloucestershire whilst fitting in regular TV appearances.

:01:20. > :01:27.That is the skinniest cat I have ever felt. He is an author and has

:01:27. > :01:35.written books about how to look after your pets. Here he is, Joe

:01:35. > :01:40.Inglis! Hello. I would hug you but I have my hands full. I can see

:01:40. > :01:46.that. Welcome to Blue Peter. Thank you. What made you decide to become

:01:46. > :01:53.a vet? I have been an animal lover. I grew up in the country. I have

:01:53. > :01:56.enjoyed the company of animals. It's been in my blood. My great-

:01:56. > :02:02.great-great-grandfather was Charles Darwin, the guy with the beard.

:02:02. > :02:06.Charles Darwin? Yes. THE Charles Darwin. The guy with the beard! He

:02:06. > :02:11.came up with the evolution. That is how people remember him. It's

:02:11. > :02:16.always been in my family. Is being a vet a bit like being a teacher?

:02:16. > :02:22.You have favourites but you are not meant to? It is. I have been a dog

:02:22. > :02:26.person, like yourself. So I love... I love guinea pigs, too! Whoever

:02:26. > :02:31.brings them in, it is their favourite animal so you have to

:02:31. > :02:35.treat them like your own. I have some very important news. Two

:02:35. > :02:45.special guests are on their way into the studio and I think they

:02:45. > :02:45.

:02:45. > :03:51.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 66 seconds

:03:51. > :03:55.Here they are. We have been reunited with our cats Socks and

:03:55. > :04:00.Cookie. These guys live a couple of hundred miles away with Chrissy. It

:04:00. > :04:05.wouldn't with fair to bring them up here every week? It would be a long

:04:05. > :04:13.way. It is over 200 miles. They are fine. They are fine. Every week

:04:13. > :04:17.would be too much. They are showbiz cats! Where's the camera? Some of

:04:17. > :04:23.that is their breed. They are the ragdoll breed. They have been bred

:04:23. > :04:28.to be relaxed and chilled-out. They seem that. They are. Cookie is a

:04:28. > :04:33.little bit more get-up-and-go. Socks is fine. He takes it in his

:04:33. > :04:36.stride. Absolutely. You guys are still very much part of the Blue

:04:36. > :04:43.Peter family. You have been out and about. What have you been up to?

:04:43. > :04:49.have been out to quite a few cat shows. We went to the Kentish Cat

:04:49. > :04:53.Show in October. So we have been around and the cats love it. They

:04:53. > :05:00.love - the people love them. The children have their photographs

:05:00. > :05:05.taken and the grown-ups love them, too. Do they take a lot of looking

:05:05. > :05:09.after? Long-haired take a lot of grooming. Is that a lot of work for

:05:09. > :05:17.you? The ragdoll has an easy-care coat. It does need grooming a

:05:17. > :05:24.couple of times a week. They do malt, though. You have to get used

:05:24. > :05:29.to the hairs! I know your house has the odd Socks and Cookie hair in

:05:29. > :05:34.it! Thank you for looking after the cats for us. We will see you very

:05:34. > :05:39.soon. These guys aren't the only kind of pets you can have. Come

:05:39. > :05:42.over this way, Joe. If you don't want dog or cat hair, you can

:05:42. > :05:48.always have one of these guys? always have one of these guys?

:05:48. > :05:51.Absolutely. This is Fudge the rabbit. Rabbits can make fantastic

:05:51. > :05:56.pets. They are very common in the wild. You can keep them in your

:05:56. > :06:00.home or in the garden. You can have them running around like cats?

:06:00. > :06:03.can. Rabbits are intelligent. You can litter train them so they do

:06:03. > :06:10.their business in the litter tray. You can train a rabbit to come when

:06:10. > :06:16.you call. I have seen rabbits that people have gone, "Rover!" - well

:06:16. > :06:22.not Rover - but Fudge! That is amazing. Not all of their habits

:06:22. > :06:29.are appealing. They do eat their own poo. That is part of the normal

:06:29. > :06:34.things they do. It would keep your house clean. There you go. Who is

:06:35. > :06:38.this? This is your friend Thomas. Thomas the guinea pig. As you can

:06:38. > :06:43.hear, guinea pigs are some of the most vocal small pets. They can

:06:43. > :06:48.make lots of different noises. They make fantastic pets. They are easy

:06:48. > :06:53.to look after. They are great in groups. Some people do keep them

:06:53. > :06:58.with rabbits. They have different nutritional needs, so it is best to

:06:58. > :07:06.keep them with other guinea pigs. used to have guinea pigs. They are

:07:06. > :07:10.wonderful. They are. Over here, we have the smallest but perhaps the

:07:11. > :07:16.most ferocious! I'm going to stitch you up here. You were scared about

:07:16. > :07:23.meeting the hamster? Like all vets, you might think what would a vet be

:07:23. > :07:33.scared of? Me, personally, it is hamsters. They have these enormous

:07:33. > :07:35.

:07:35. > :07:39.teeth because they are rodents. have seen Steve wrestle a snake but

:07:39. > :07:45.he's never wrestled a hamster! don't need much space. One of the

:07:45. > :07:49.problems you might have with them is they are nocturnal. So they are

:07:49. > :07:55.up all night and asleep during the day. So that is a bit of a shame.

:07:55. > :08:01.You want to play with them in the day. This is good therapy. I'm

:08:01. > :08:05.overcoming my fear of hamsters. She is called Bella. She is lovely.

:08:05. > :08:10.someone is desperate to have a pet, and they are not allowed, what

:08:10. > :08:16.advice would you give? There are lots of ways to interact with

:08:16. > :08:20.animals without having a pet of pet sanctuary. Or if you have a

:08:20. > :08:24.friend with a hamster, you can play with their pets. Barney the dog was

:08:24. > :08:28.walked by many a dog walking volunteer before he came to live

:08:28. > :08:34.with me. If you don't have a real- life pet, you can go on to the Blue

:08:34. > :08:40.Peter website. Head over to Pets Place where you can watch funny

:08:40. > :08:45.videos... That is beautiful. Print and make paper toys. Write crazy

:08:45. > :08:48.stories about the Blue Peter pets. If you are a Blue Peter Badge

:08:48. > :08:53.winner, find out which badge attractions offer you the chance to

:08:53. > :08:58.get close with all sorts of animals. What are you waiting for? Head over

:08:58. > :09:03.to the CBBC website and click on Blue Peter. We are going to meet

:09:03. > :09:08.some more unusual animals later. Pets come in all shapes and sizes.

:09:08. > :09:13.What if your animal is more unusual than most? We went to meet one

:09:13. > :09:18.family whose pets stand out from family whose pets stand out from

:09:18. > :09:22.the crowd! This is south end, a typical seaside town complete with

:09:22. > :09:29.a pier, a fairground and a nice sandy beach. In this town, we have

:09:29. > :09:37.a typical house, with a family and typical pets like cats and dogs...

:09:37. > :09:42.And an emu! That's right, an emu. Not so typical now, is it? Beaky

:09:42. > :09:47.has been part of the family since dad, Ian, received a strange

:09:47. > :09:53.Christmas present. My wife bought me an emu egg for Christmas. We

:09:53. > :09:59.designed an emu incubator and made it out of an old seed tray, put it

:09:59. > :10:04.together - I didn't think it would work - but it did! We ended up with

:10:04. > :10:08.Beaky. She was reared, hand-reared by myself in the house. Obviously,

:10:08. > :10:15.with the help of the kids. They loved her. She grew up with the

:10:15. > :10:23.kids. She had to come out here because she got too big. She thinks

:10:23. > :10:28.the kids are siblings. They will feed the left-over dinner to her.

:10:28. > :10:36.The eldest of the children is Jack. Come here. It is brilliant growing

:10:36. > :10:39.up with the emu. Most of my friends have cats and dogs. They are

:10:39. > :10:45.flightless birds native to Australia. They feature on the

:10:45. > :10:55.country's coat of arms. Emus are the second largest bird in the

:10:55. > :10:57.

:10:57. > :11:01.The distinctive green-shelled emu egg can be 12 times the size of a

:11:01. > :11:05.chicken egg. You can fry them, scramble them and make omelettes.

:11:05. > :11:12.They taste like chicken eggs, but better! What does it take to look

:11:12. > :11:16.after a pet emu? Beaky is up by 6.00. It is funny letting her out.

:11:16. > :11:21.She will charge straight to the breakfast bowl to see what I have

:11:21. > :11:25.got her for breakfast. If it is something she is not keen on, she

:11:25. > :11:32.will make some funny noises and stomp up-and-down the garden.

:11:32. > :11:36.you hear that? One of the ways emus communicate with each other is with

:11:36. > :11:40.the distinctive noise called booming! The sound is produced by

:11:40. > :11:45.an inflatable pouch in their windpipe. Emus have two sets of

:11:45. > :11:53.eyelids, one for blinking and one to keep out the dust. Believe it or

:11:53. > :12:00.not, Beaky is one of over 100 pets... Four dogs, five cats, seven

:12:00. > :12:06.guinea pigs, two frogs, one rabbit, one bearded dragon, four terrapins,

:12:06. > :12:10.one dwarf hedgehog, one scorpion, two spiders, giant snails and one

:12:10. > :12:16.emu! That must make for one noisy household! Never mind the noise. I

:12:16. > :12:21.want to live there. It looks fun. Amazing. Have you ever had an emu

:12:21. > :12:26.in your surgery? No. I have had a giant African land snail. We have

:12:26. > :12:30.one to meet in a minute. Before we meet him, we have this beautiful

:12:30. > :12:38.leopard gecko. These are wonderful. They come from all over the world.

:12:38. > :12:41.They are relatively easy to keep as pets. They need to be kept at the

:12:41. > :12:46.right temperature. You need some equipment? You do. They can be

:12:46. > :12:51.wonderfully rewarding pets. They have some amazing superpowers. They

:12:51. > :12:58.can climb up sheer surfaces, so glass and on ceilings, like an

:12:58. > :13:05.animal version of Spider-Man. some of these guys shed their

:13:05. > :13:10.tails? They do. A lot of lizards do. You must not grab them by their

:13:10. > :13:14.tail. This here... This is Bob. is a bearded dragon and he wants to

:13:14. > :13:19.say hello. Come for a cuddle! come from Australia. They live in

:13:19. > :13:24.the wilds of the desert. You need to get the right equipment to keep

:13:24. > :13:29.them nice and safe. They have loads of character. They like saying

:13:29. > :13:37.hello. They like to cuddle. They can make wonderful pets. Do you

:13:37. > :13:41.have to feed them live animals? do. You do need to feed them on

:13:41. > :13:48.live roaches and worms. You don't have to feed these guys such things,

:13:48. > :13:52.do you? You don't. These are giant African land snails. Do snails make

:13:52. > :13:57.good pets? That is a good question. I had one come into the surgery - I

:13:58. > :14:07.have two here! I'm not convinced - they are not the most interactive

:14:08. > :14:08.

:14:08. > :14:15.pets. I had a little boy saying, "This is Vic, he is a bit off

:14:15. > :14:21.colour!" It is like a fish, you can watch them. Exactly. Chinchillas

:14:21. > :14:30.are very popular? I love them. They are the most cutest of animals out

:14:30. > :14:37.there. They come from the Andes. They have these lovely dense,

:14:38. > :14:42.really fine fur. They keep it clean by bathing in dust. They wash in

:14:42. > :14:47.dust? Yes. It might sound strange. They are fantastic climbers. You

:14:47. > :14:54.need a big area. They have these big teeth because they are rodents

:14:54. > :14:58.so they chew. If you let them loose, they can chew electrical wires.

:14:58. > :15:03.would have let him out for a run in here, but he might have disappeared

:15:03. > :15:12.and I have my hands full with Bob! Let's go and meet a family who own

:15:12. > :15:17.one animal that doesn't know whether to baa... Or woof! Family

:15:17. > :15:23.pet Jack needs his walk every day. There is nothing he likes more than

:15:23. > :15:28.his owner taking him for a stroll. Come on, let's go. Jack is no

:15:28. > :15:37.ordinary family pet and that is because Jack is a sheep that thinks

:15:37. > :15:41.he is a dog. Jack was lamb of a ewe lamb which is a sheep that has

:15:41. > :15:46.never had a lamb before. He was the runt of the litter. He was very,

:15:46. > :15:49.very weak and he needed a lot of help from us. We took him up to the

:15:49. > :15:54.house. We gave him some milk. We put the hairdryer on him to warm

:15:54. > :16:01.him up. We had to put him with somebody at night otherwise the fox

:16:01. > :16:06.would have taken him. So we decided that we would put him with our

:16:06. > :16:12.stringer spaniel and he stayed there ever since. Jack and Jessie

:16:12. > :16:16.are best of friends. -- our springer spaniel. Jack is six

:16:16. > :16:20.months old. Normally if a sheep and a dog get together the sheep is

:16:20. > :16:30.very frightened of the dog. With Jack and Jessie, because they have

:16:30. > :16:34.

:16:34. > :16:39.grown up together, Jack is very The people on the canal are

:16:39. > :16:45.fascinated by Jack. I take the dog and the lamb for a walk on a lead.

:16:45. > :16:52.It is an unusual sight for people to see a lady walking a dog and a

:16:52. > :16:56.sheep. Jack loves his dog's life. He can't stomach the dog food that

:16:56. > :17:04.Jessie eats. It is back outside for dinner to have a munch on the green

:17:04. > :17:10.stuff! The end of the day he is a sheep. He eats grass. He eats hay

:17:10. > :17:14.and sheep nuts. He doesn't eat dog food. Jack will stay as a member of

:17:14. > :17:20.the family. He will be a pet. The other sheep will end up as lamb

:17:20. > :17:28.chops, as sheep do. But Jack will stay as a friend of Jessie's and he

:17:28. > :17:35.will be a pet in the farm. That was fantastic. I had a cat

:17:35. > :17:40.once who thought he was a dog! lead? No, just trotting along

:17:40. > :17:45.thinking he was a dog. I know, Barney! We have a show dedicated to

:17:45. > :17:52.animals and we have not given you a mention. What breed is he? He is a

:17:52. > :18:01.cross. Do you know from which dogs? Looking at him, I would say there

:18:01. > :18:07.is a bit of Dachsund and collie in there. He is Dachsund, a sausage

:18:07. > :18:13.dog, crossed with a red setter. There is a dog show that celebrates

:18:13. > :18:17.cross-breeds and we had to enter Barney into it. You can't kiss her!

:18:17. > :18:21.Come here. # Who let the dogs out? #

:18:21. > :18:31.We all know you love your dogs. But do you know the difference between

:18:31. > :18:33.

:18:33. > :18:38.poodles and pugs? How about that? I'm at Scrufts. I couldn't come out

:18:38. > :18:42.bringing Barney. The competition isn't just about looks. The dogs

:18:42. > :18:49.are judged on good character, good health and good temperament with

:18:49. > :18:53.people and other dogs. Today, we will see how our Barney will do. I

:18:53. > :18:58.know you want to go. This is our chance. We are doing it for the

:18:58. > :19:03.boys. He is so keen to get involved. Mum's not here but we have to do

:19:03. > :19:08.her proud. All right? Exactly. Dogs from all over the country have come

:19:08. > :19:14.through regional heats to win a spot in one of the finals here

:19:14. > :19:18.today. The categories include golden oldies, child's best friend,

:19:18. > :19:22.and prettiest female dog. This year, there is a new category that's been

:19:22. > :19:26.introduced - the celebrity dog category. So here is where our very

:19:26. > :19:34.own Barney has come along to see if he has got what it takes to compete

:19:34. > :19:44.against the doggie faces of stage and screen. It takes some effort to

:19:44. > :19:51.look this good! So he's been pampered and now there is only one

:19:51. > :19:57.finishing touch - a brand-new dog collar once he has had a scratch!

:19:57. > :20:01.Now he is absolutely ready to show those other celebrity dogs just

:20:01. > :20:07.what he's made of. Go on, son! Barney is one of the best-known

:20:07. > :20:14.mongrels in showbiz so let's see if the competition is going to be

:20:14. > :20:20.tough. Our first canine contender is Dodger straight from the sets of

:20:20. > :20:26.Pirates of the Caribbean. He has many talents. Then we have Harvey.

:20:26. > :20:31.This dog never stops performing. He can pick anything up on command.

:20:31. > :20:40.Not only is he the star of many a TV show, he performs in dog agility

:20:40. > :20:46.shows, too. Then Ripley. She has a great bark on command. She landed

:20:46. > :20:52.her first modelling role as the face of Dog Adoption. Finally,

:20:52. > :20:55.hounding the judges we have Barney. He may not have a fancy trick and

:20:55. > :21:00.his favourite pastime may be lying down, but he is always willing to

:21:00. > :21:05.give it his best shot. But first time for a catch-up with one of the

:21:05. > :21:12.judges. I thought I would say hi. You will be judging the category

:21:12. > :21:17.that we are in. No pressure(!) are impartial, you have to be.

:21:17. > :21:27.Take a look at the finest celebrity dog you will ever see. He doesn't

:21:27. > :21:27.

:21:27. > :21:32.do that many tricks. I have to bring him into show what he can do.

:21:32. > :21:38.You got lots of biscuits?. Loads! What are you going to look for? Do

:21:38. > :21:42.you do the coat? It has to be an instinctive thing. By the time you

:21:42. > :21:47.see him, he will be bigger! I am looking forward to your comments.

:21:47. > :21:54.Whatever you say is fine. You have to be impartial. You see what you

:21:54. > :21:58.see on the day. It is time for a quick pep talk. They look calm.

:21:58. > :22:04.Don't look at them! It will be fine. You have the tricks in the bag. You

:22:04. > :22:10.have all this TV stuff. They have been in TV for years, it is all

:22:10. > :22:20.rubbish! You are a showbiz dog. High-five! I haven't taught him

:22:20. > :22:26.that yet! It is competition time. Will Barney win Celebrity Scrufts?

:22:26. > :22:36.He is loving this. Antony knows he's got a class dog on his hands.

:22:36. > :22:40.

:22:40. > :22:48.That is one of the finest breeds of You can see his potential. This is

:22:48. > :22:52.his trick. He can eat five biscuits in ten seconds! LAUGHTER He chomps

:22:52. > :22:57.them all down. So that is it. We have done all we can do. It is up

:22:57. > :23:04.to the judges now. Has Barney bitten off more than he can chew?

:23:04. > :23:14.It is time to hear who the winner is. Come on, Barney! There is only

:23:14. > :23:16.

:23:16. > :23:20.one winner in this, Harvey. APPLAUSE Well done, pal. Never mind,

:23:20. > :23:24.Barney. It is the taking part that counts. I don't think it matters

:23:24. > :23:33.that we came last. Think about all the dog jokes we have heard today.

:23:33. > :23:41.I hope you don't get COLLARED by your adoring fans! We are kicking

:23:41. > :23:48.you while you are down! Sorry. think he was robbed. He was the

:23:48. > :23:52.best dog in the show. See you later, Cookie! Tune in next week when we
