:00:16. > :00:26.On today's show: I get scared. Welcome Barney. And attempts to be

:00:26. > :00:44.

:00:44. > :00:50.scary. Have I got what it takes to Hello. Happy Hallowe'en! Welcome to

:00:50. > :00:59.a Blue Peter Hallowe'en Special with all things scary. I am a bit

:00:59. > :01:03.freaked out by myself! Argh! Very funny! I'm putting that down.

:01:03. > :01:10.not just scary things on the face, it is scary things on the body.

:01:10. > :01:16.There is a scary challenge coming up. Stay tuned... Can we talk about

:01:16. > :01:20.something cute? Have a look at this something cute? Have a look at this

:01:20. > :01:25.pumpkin. Can you tell what shape it is? What does it look like? It has

:01:25. > :01:30.a big circle in the middle. Two on either side. I know! All right,

:01:30. > :01:39.clever clogs. Have a look at this picture. Yes, that's Mickey Mouse.

:01:40. > :01:45.This pumpkin is a Mickey Mouse- shaped pumpkin. Genius. These are

:01:45. > :01:48.being grown by "the Pumpkin King". David Bowman grows these in

:01:48. > :01:53.Lincolnshire. There is no special trick to it. You take a pumpkin

:01:53. > :01:56.that's grown in between May and July and once it is this size, it

:01:56. > :02:01.gets stuck into this Mickey Mouse mould. As it continues to grow, it

:02:01. > :02:05.takes on the shape of the mould and you have your Mickey Mouse-shaped

:02:05. > :02:10.pumpkins! The possibilities are endless. You could do all sorts of

:02:10. > :02:15.things. It is not all about pumpkins. Helen, what is your

:02:15. > :02:19.biggest fear? Everybody knows that I hate rats. You don't like rats?

:02:19. > :02:25.It is not that I don't like them, some people have them as pets, but

:02:25. > :02:33.I genuinely feel sick when I see them. Then you will hate this! This

:02:33. > :02:40.is what is known as the rat coffin! It's an ordinary coffin. One of us

:02:40. > :02:47.will lie in it and then it will be filled with rats. I don't like that.

:02:47. > :02:52.Snakes, spiders, I'm fine. Rats... I don't know why rats have a bad

:02:52. > :02:59.press. Maybe this will help. Think of all the places you wouldn't want

:02:59. > :03:04.to be. Dirty sewers, bins, rubbish dumps? This is where you will find

:03:04. > :03:09.rats. Is this why we fear them? Or is it because they carry diseases.

:03:09. > :03:14.Back in 1348 they spread the black death which wiped out a third of

:03:14. > :03:20.the UK's population. Or is it because their teeth are strong

:03:20. > :03:26.enough to eat through a human bone. Despite this, they are not all bad.

:03:26. > :03:31.They are intelligent. They can be trained to do complex tasks. They

:03:31. > :03:36.have an amazing sense of smell. Some people find rats cute and

:03:36. > :03:41.lovable and keep them as pets. People keep rats as pets because

:03:41. > :03:47.they offer more interaction than some other small animals. They are

:03:47. > :03:51.very trainable. To get a rat to do a task or a little trick, you need

:03:51. > :03:55.to associate that with food and you can train them very easily.

:03:55. > :03:58.Intelligent they may be, but they still fill us with fear. With an

:03:58. > :04:06.estimated 60 million rats in Britain, they are here to stay,

:04:06. > :04:10.whether we like it or not. HA-HA-HA! Are you all right with

:04:10. > :04:15.them? I don't mind. There is only one fair way to decide who gets to

:04:15. > :04:22.go in the coffin and that is with a spooky, harrowing Hallowe'en quiz

:04:22. > :04:28.hosted by our quizmaster, Ore! Hello, friends. Love what they have

:04:28. > :04:31.done with my face?! This is great. Here we go. This quiz is split into

:04:31. > :04:38.two sections - Hallowe'en Fact and Hallowe'en Fiction. Helping me keep

:04:38. > :04:48.the scores today is someone who has been given a single day's release

:04:48. > :04:48.

:04:48. > :04:57.from London's Dungeon. Quincy! You have something stuck in your teeth.

:04:57. > :05:03.Whoever has the least points faces the rat coffin! CLAP OF THUNDER

:05:03. > :05:13.Bring it on! Barney, take your position over at gravestone one. It

:05:13. > :05:15.

:05:15. > :05:21.is time to get on with Round One - Hallowe'en Fact. I love how Helen

:05:21. > :05:25.has picked up Barney for support. You will need it! Helen, black and

:05:25. > :05:32.orange are associated with Hallowe'en. Black is a symbol of

:05:32. > :05:39.darkness. What does the orange symbolise? The sun? Good go, but it

:05:40. > :05:46.is wrong! Strength and endurance. Endurance? That's what the card

:05:46. > :05:56.says! Barney, is a pumpkin a fruit or a vegetable? That is easy!

:05:56. > :06:05.

:06:05. > :06:12.it! Vegetable. It's a fruit! That was easy! We are in deadlock. Which

:06:12. > :06:20.festival is the most profitable for shops in the UK? Valentine's Day.

:06:20. > :06:30.Wrong answer. People in the Isle of Man celebrate Hoptunay. They carry

:06:30. > :06:32.

:06:32. > :06:42.what hollowed vegetable? A good game. Parsnip. It's a turnip. Quick

:06:42. > :06:49.

:06:49. > :06:56.one. Sowonphobiab is a fear of what? Pigs. No. How much this year

:06:56. > :07:03.will people spend on Hallowe'en? 3 million or 315 million? 3 million.

:07:03. > :07:09.315 million! Let's hold the quiz there. What is the score? Barney

:07:09. > :07:15.has a horrifying zero! Helen has a scary zero! Terrifying. You both

:07:15. > :07:19.are still in with a chance of facing the rat coffin. CLAP OF

:07:19. > :07:24.THUNDER Let's talk about something else for a second. This year we are

:07:24. > :07:29.asking you to bake to support our appeal and lots of people have been

:07:29. > :07:39.getting involved including the cast of Young Dracula. Have a look at

:07:39. > :07:43.

:07:43. > :07:53.Whatever you do, don't start flapping. You can relax. I'm one of

:07:53. > :07:53.

:07:53. > :07:57.you. Nice to see you too, dad. Vlad cannot only create some sweet

:07:57. > :08:07.treats, he can turn himself into a bat but let's look at the sweet

:08:07. > :08:15.

:08:15. > :08:21.What is that delicious smell? Hello, Vlad? It is very late. Young men

:08:21. > :08:31.need their sleep. I'm making some Hallowe'en cakes for my Blue Peter

:08:31. > :08:34.

:08:34. > :08:39.bake sale later. What are you making? Chocolate crispy spider

:08:39. > :08:45.cakes. Spiders! Fancy giving me a hand? To be honest, baking and me,

:08:45. > :08:52.we don't mix. Remember, last time I tried to make a cake... It was

:08:52. > :09:01.awful. Well, this is simple. So simple a breather... Shall I show

:09:01. > :09:05.you? Go on, then. Well, really easy. You need rice pop cereal, bar of

:09:05. > :09:13.chocolate and bits to decorate. Well, that does sound simple.

:09:13. > :09:19.Perhaps I could manage that. I will go and wash my hands. Right. Shall

:09:19. > :09:27.we get started? Yes. You need to get small chunks of chocolate, put

:09:27. > :09:36.them in a bowl over a pan of boiling water. A bain-marie?

:09:36. > :09:40.what? A bain-marie. Wait for the chocolate to melt... I better do

:09:40. > :09:45.that. When it is melted, we get the rice cereal and mix it with the

:09:45. > :09:52.chocolate. There is one over there. Very clever. You can mix it with a

:09:52. > :10:02.spoon or if you want, you can get in there with your fingers. Right-

:10:02. > :10:06.

:10:06. > :10:12.oh! It is just chocolate and rice cereal. I know. Ooh! Lovely.

:10:12. > :10:22.when we have got our mixture, we want to spoon some out - not too

:10:22. > :10:23.

:10:23. > :10:32.much - and fill the base half-way. Right. Then next take some

:10:32. > :10:38.strawberry laces and these will be the legs. We put those on like that.

:10:38. > :10:48.Like spiders' legs. Very creative. I'm quite proud of this. Then on

:10:48. > :10:48.

:10:48. > :10:58.top of that, you put another splodge of ricey chocolatey mix.

:10:58. > :10:59.

:10:59. > :11:05.For the eyes, you can use sweets... We will put these on as eyes. Then

:11:05. > :11:15.they should stick. And then use a bit of black icing to put on the

:11:15. > :11:24.

:11:24. > :11:32.eyes. Look at that. Very smart. Would we call it simple? Yes.

:11:32. > :11:37.does look delicious. I have to say, I'm very impressed. Thank you.

:11:37. > :11:47.don't suppose I could pinch a little one? You can't eat one. They

:11:47. > :11:52.

:11:52. > :12:01.are for charity. Give me 30p. 30p. There we go. Thank you. Oh...

:12:01. > :12:06.Good? Delicious. I got a leg! Very well done, Vlad.

:12:06. > :12:15.I second that, very well done, Vlad. If you want to see Young Dracula,

:12:15. > :12:21.you are in luck. It is on the CBBC Channel at 5.15pm.

:12:21. > :12:27.Hopefully, that inspired you to hold a bake sale. Head over to the

:12:27. > :12:31.website for more details. Don't do that until after the show! CLAP OF

:12:31. > :12:37.THUNDER It is time to carry on with your test of Hallowe'en knowledge.

:12:37. > :12:43.What is the ghoulish scores? So far, Barney has a horrible zero! And

:12:43. > :12:47.Helen has a terrifying zero! Very terrifying. The stakes are high.

:12:47. > :12:55.Whoever loses will face the Ultimate Hallowe'en Horror - the

:12:55. > :13:02.coffin of rats! CLAP OF THUNDER the rat coffin. This is the second

:13:02. > :13:12.round. It is a round about myths and legends. It is Hallowe'en

:13:12. > :13:12.

:13:12. > :13:22.Fiction. Helen, biting her fingers. Question one, what is the real name

:13:22. > :13:22.

:13:22. > :13:29.of the bride in Tim Burton's film of the same name? Bridezilla?

:13:29. > :13:39.is the answer. A big fat zero. Barney, which famous wife of King

:13:39. > :13:39.

:13:39. > :13:48.Henry VIII is said to haunt Hever Castle in Kent? I know this. It's

:13:48. > :13:56.Ann Boleyn. That isst right answer! -- that is the right answer! Which

:13:56. > :14:01.moor in Cornwall is home to a mythical beast? Bodmin. That is the

:14:01. > :14:07.right answer. Barney, what sort of animal is said to haunt the church

:14:07. > :14:14.at the Tower of London? Which type of animal is said to haunt the

:14:14. > :14:22.church at the Tower of London? horse? A cat. One more question for

:14:22. > :14:27.the both of you. Which decade was the Count Dracula Society was

:14:27. > :14:31.founded in the United States? '60s? That is the right answer.

:14:31. > :14:38.This really is scary. Last question to you, Barney. Which Lancashire

:14:38. > :14:47.village is said to be haunted by a group of witches? Pendle! Pendle is

:14:47. > :14:55.the right answer! BUZZER SOUNDS Tie-breaker question. Both of you,

:14:55. > :15:02.last year David Finkle set a new record by carving a face into a

:15:02. > :15:10.pumpkin, but how many seconds did he do it in? Seven. No, 17. Got to

:15:10. > :15:17.take your first answer. 231. The real answer is 20.1. Barney wins.

:15:17. > :15:23.Your fates have been sealed. Loser! You will need that boiler suit and

:15:23. > :15:27.the goggles. Come on, Helen. Time to face the rat coffin. See you

:15:27. > :15:35.later. CLAP OF THUNDER Whilst Helen gets herself prepared, it is time

:15:35. > :15:41.to find ow how scary I could be -- out how scary I could be at the

:15:41. > :15:46.Blackpool Dungeons. Blackpool Tower is one of the UK's most impressive

:15:46. > :15:56.landmarks. Underneath it is one of Blackpool's scariest attractions,

:15:56. > :15:59.

:15:59. > :16:03.the Blackpool Tower Dungeon. This gruesome place is the setting for

:16:03. > :16:09.today's challenge. I'm a little scared of the dark. This place has

:16:09. > :16:15.got lots of dark. So we haven't started yet and I'm already

:16:15. > :16:25.terrified. Can you hear those noises? Real dungeons were

:16:25. > :16:31.underground prisons built in medieval castles. Boo! Welcome,

:16:32. > :16:37.Barney. Welcome to the Blackpool Tower Dungeon. Barney, hi. I'm Brad.

:16:37. > :16:43.Nice to meet you. Let's start at the beginning, what do you do here?

:16:43. > :16:47.It is all actor led. We take visitors on a tour through

:16:47. > :16:57.Blackpool's darkest history. We will train you up to be a dungeon

:16:57. > :17:04.creature, a little bit like our black jester. The best noises are

:17:04. > :17:09.to hear from the audience - they are a good laugh and a good scream.

:17:10. > :17:16.Let's get started and get away from him. First, Brad insisted that I

:17:16. > :17:26.experienced the pitch-black dungeon myself. I was going to have to take

:17:26. > :17:40.

:17:40. > :17:47.on an acting role as a scary monk. Terrified. That will be the monk!

:17:47. > :17:57.There's the Viking. It is so weird. Even though you know it is a show,

:17:57. > :18:07.it doesn't take long before you do get scared. Right on cue! Farewell.

:18:07. > :18:07.

:18:07. > :18:13.See you. Barney. You made it out. Just. Thank you very much. I think.

:18:13. > :18:17.Now that I have seen what I have to do, it's changed my challenge a bit.

:18:17. > :18:24.The monk has got lines, some of them are Latin and he has cue

:18:24. > :18:32.points he has to hit. I have half an hour to get it right. I better

:18:32. > :18:37.get started. The hologram monk talks. I'm sat still. The bigger

:18:37. > :18:45.your gesture is, the more people you will scare. Five seconds of

:18:45. > :18:50.quiet. Cue. I frightened myself a bit! Hundreds are dead. Thousands

:18:50. > :18:57.are dying in Kirkham. You wicked people. The last thing we are going

:18:57. > :19:02.to do is we are going to get you to do a Viking jump scare be imposing,

:19:02. > :19:07.be loud and as scary as you possibly can. Let's go. What have I

:19:08. > :19:17.let myself in for? So with my scary acting well on its way, bring on

:19:18. > :19:24.

:19:24. > :19:31.the make-up! HA-HA-HA! It's show time. There are thousands dying in

:19:31. > :19:41.Kirkham! You convince yourself you have forgotten the lines - I have

:19:41. > :19:42.

:19:42. > :19:48.no idea what the third line is. Peasants... I have forgotten it!

:19:49. > :19:58.Well, I'm on. Too late now. OK, first test, can I stay still enough

:19:59. > :19:59.

:19:59. > :20:09.so that no-one spots me? Go right in. Get nice and close. I think I

:20:09. > :20:15.

:20:15. > :20:22.have been spotted! Leaving the Saxons to toil on this land...

:20:22. > :20:32.ha, there's my scream! As I look deep into your eyes, I see pain, I

:20:32. > :20:44.

:20:44. > :20:51.see confusion, I see stupidity. And The best bit about this job is the

:20:51. > :21:01.scare. I have to say, that is the most enjoyable thing I have done

:21:01. > :21:05.

:21:05. > :21:08.for a while. Next one! That's the first bit done. I have got to

:21:08. > :21:12.change into my Viking costume now and then I will scare everyone in

:21:12. > :21:17.the hall of mirrors. I'm backstage, the public will be the other side

:21:17. > :21:20.of them. When they come closer, I have a button which turns the

:21:20. > :21:30.lights on and the scary Viking noise and they can see me through

:21:30. > :21:32.

:21:32. > :21:39.the mirrors. Very cool. They are on their way. They are not looking!

:21:39. > :21:45.Argh! Got ya! My work here is done. His characters were spot on. Some

:21:45. > :21:49.of the jump scares he did got real good reactions. He got some great

:21:49. > :21:54.laughs as well. Very impressed. That was my day at the Blackpool

:21:54. > :21:58.Tower Dungeon. So I have been scared, and I have been scary. I

:21:58. > :22:03.think I'm going to have nightmares tonight. Next time I come I will

:22:03. > :22:09.bring someone to hide behind. I need a lie down. Having said that,

:22:09. > :22:14.I think what Helen is about to do is ten times as scary. Into the rat

:22:14. > :22:21.coffin you get. Why did I say seven? Why?! Now, to confirm what

:22:21. > :22:26.is happening, Helen is getting into a coffin with a glass lid. Then we

:22:26. > :22:33.will empty some rats into the coffin. Mark, over here, does this

:22:33. > :22:40.every day. The rats are going in? Argh! Mark, let's talk through

:22:40. > :22:45.these rats. These are Norway rats. Their primary weapon is their teeth.

:22:45. > :22:49.They can chew clear through metal, wood, untreated concrete... They

:22:49. > :22:55.can chew through metal! You are doing really well. Not much longer

:22:55. > :22:59.to go. 12 rats in there. They are running up my leg! They are awful!

:22:59. > :23:05.We have agreed a word if Helen wants to come out. She can say the

:23:05. > :23:10.word and we will get her out. If she wants to bang the lid, it is OK,

:23:10. > :23:13.you are doing fine. This is brilliant TV. LAUGHTER Let's talk

:23:13. > :23:17.about what you can see on tomorrow's show. 30 seconds more.

:23:17. > :23:23.Tomorrow, you can find out what you can eat by foraging through the

:23:24. > :23:28.forest and woodlands of our lovely country.

:23:28. > :23:37.We have got some comic book royalty in the studio. If you have ever

:23:37. > :23:42.wanted to work for a comic book, you will be finding out tomorrow

:23:42. > :23:46.how you can do that. Not too much longer - if you want to see the

:23:46. > :23:50.pumpkins that David has designed, you can see them at Disneyland
