7:00:35 > 7:00:38On today's show, we've got wind, rain and a giant cloud in the studio,

7:00:38 > 7:00:41so, you know what? I'm not taking my chances.

7:00:41 > 7:00:43Linds, we don't need to be quite that prepared.

7:00:43 > 7:00:44Oh, really?

7:00:44 > 7:00:46THUNDER AND LIGHTNING RUMBLES

7:01:04 > 7:01:06APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

7:01:06 > 7:01:08Hello, and welcome to live Blue Peter!

7:01:08 > 7:01:11Coming up on today's show, I'll be showing you how to make

7:01:11 > 7:01:14your very own Blue Peter Christmas card 2015.

7:01:14 > 7:01:16It is a cracker!

7:01:16 > 7:01:17POPPING

7:01:17 > 7:01:19Literally. SHE LAUGHS

7:01:19 > 7:01:21This hero of a scientist, Greg Foot,

7:01:21 > 7:01:24is back in the house with a belter of a weather experiment.

7:01:24 > 7:01:25What can we expect, my friend?

7:01:25 > 7:01:28Oh, I'm only going to fill the whole studio with a cloud.

7:01:28 > 7:01:30I cannot wait for that. And that's not all.

7:01:30 > 7:01:32Check this out.

7:01:32 > 7:01:34Woohoo!

7:01:34 > 7:01:35Oh, yeah!

7:01:35 > 7:01:38'I get put through my paces in the air and in the water,

7:01:38 > 7:01:41'all as a part of my wind turbine adventure.'

7:01:41 > 7:01:42That looks so cool.

7:01:42 > 7:01:45And, because we're talking about extreme weather today,

7:01:45 > 7:01:47we want to hear from you, it's a live show, isn't it?

7:01:47 > 7:01:49So get in touch with us and tell us if anything

7:01:49 > 7:01:52could pour out of the sky today for you, what would it be?

7:01:52 > 7:01:53- BOTH:- And why?

7:01:53 > 7:01:55Head to the website.

7:01:57 > 7:01:59We will read your comments at the end of the show.

7:01:59 > 7:02:01Now, you can probably tell the man, the myth,

7:02:01 > 7:02:03Barney Harwood is not here. He is on holiday.

7:02:03 > 7:02:06However, before he left, he did a spot of gardening,

7:02:06 > 7:02:09extreme gardening, at extreme heights. Check this out.

7:02:11 > 7:02:12JUNGLE SOUNDS

7:02:12 > 7:02:13MONKEYS SHRIEK

7:02:15 > 7:02:16I think I'm lost.

7:02:18 > 7:02:20I'm never going to see Radzi again.

7:02:20 > 7:02:22You know you can use the paths, Barney?

7:02:22 > 7:02:25Yeah, I'll just use that. Ooh!

7:02:25 > 7:02:27'OK, so I'm not actually lost in the jungle.

7:02:27 > 7:02:31'I'm in the world's largest indoor rainforest at the Eden Project

7:02:31 > 7:02:34'in Cornwall, home to over two million plants.'

7:02:37 > 7:02:40'Some of the tropical plants in these giant domes, known as biomes,

7:02:40 > 7:02:42'can grow to be seriously tall.

7:02:42 > 7:02:45'And I've heard they need my help to trim them.

7:02:45 > 7:02:47'Let's get some gardening gear on.'

7:02:48 > 7:02:50Well, I wasn't expecting this.

7:02:50 > 7:02:52But I am kitted out to do some extreme gardening.

7:02:52 > 7:02:55And the girl to show me the ropes is Hetty.

7:02:55 > 7:02:57Now, she says she hangs around here, but, erm...

7:02:57 > 7:02:59I haven't seen her. Have you seen her anywhere?

7:02:59 > 7:03:01Hey, Barney? You ready?

7:03:01 > 7:03:02'Ah! There she is.

7:03:02 > 7:03:04'Hetty is one of the horticulturalists here,

7:03:04 > 7:03:07'who looks after all the plants, and she's taking me right up

7:03:07 > 7:03:09'into the tree canopy to start pruning.'

7:03:11 > 7:03:13'I'm using a technique called jugging,

7:03:13 > 7:03:16'where I make myself go higher by pulling on my rope.

7:03:16 > 7:03:19'It sounds really hard, but it's actually surprisingly easy.

7:03:19 > 7:03:21'And before no time, I'm up in the trees.'

7:03:22 > 7:03:24Why do you have to prune these?

7:03:24 > 7:03:26Tropical trees grow really, really fast.

7:03:26 > 7:03:30And they get so big that they start to grow into the side

7:03:30 > 7:03:32of the biome structure.

7:03:32 > 7:03:34How do you maintain the conditions of a real rainforest?

7:03:34 > 7:03:37- So we've got this fantastic structure above us.- Yeah.

7:03:37 > 7:03:39Which is really efficient.

7:03:39 > 7:03:41As soon as that sun comes out, it captures all the heat

7:03:41 > 7:03:44and helps to keep it really nice and warm.

7:03:44 > 7:03:46It can get up to about 43 degrees in here.

7:03:46 > 7:03:48Maybe higher, right at the top.

7:03:48 > 7:03:50That's hotter than going to Spain on holiday

7:03:50 > 7:03:53- at the height of summer, isn't it? That's...- Yeah.- That's real heat.

7:03:53 > 7:03:56- So if I trim this one. - Yes, please.- Just about there?

7:03:56 > 7:03:59- Yeah, that'll do nicely. - Nice clean cut.

7:03:59 > 7:04:00Big branch falling.

7:04:01 > 7:04:03Coming down.

7:04:04 > 7:04:08'And, while we're up here, Hetty wants to show me some of the sights.

7:04:08 > 7:04:09We're about eight metres up today,

7:04:09 > 7:04:12which is quite a little climb for us.

7:04:12 > 7:04:14- That big tree you can see over there, our kapok.- Yeah.

7:04:14 > 7:04:16- That's 30 metres high now.- Wow.

7:04:16 > 7:04:19And from the top of that platform down to the ground is 50 metres.

7:04:19 > 7:04:21- That's insanely high, isn't it? - It is.

7:04:21 > 7:04:23- Shall we go down?- Yes.

7:04:23 > 7:04:24'So there you have it.

7:04:24 > 7:04:26'Pruning a rainforest, tick.

7:04:26 > 7:04:29'But it's not just tropical trees growing here.

7:04:29 > 7:04:31'There are all kinds of plants from around the world,

7:04:31 > 7:04:34'including South American cocoa beans.'

7:04:34 > 7:04:36Wait, did I just say cocoa?

7:04:36 > 7:04:37- HE GASPS - I did!

7:04:37 > 7:04:39Well, you know what that means.

7:04:39 > 7:04:41That means we're surrounded by chocolate.

7:04:41 > 7:04:44Everyone stop filming, we're having lunch.

7:04:44 > 7:04:46Come on, Barney! We've got work to do.

7:04:46 > 7:04:49'What? More work? Oh, OK.

7:04:49 > 7:04:51'Next on the list is picking papayas.'

7:04:51 > 7:04:54- I'm going to cut and you're going to catch.- Ah, this is cool.

7:04:54 > 7:04:56So first one.

7:04:56 > 7:04:57- Got it, got it, got it! - Whoa!

7:04:57 > 7:05:01Yes! First one in and then it's just splattered everywhere.

7:05:01 > 7:05:02- Whoa!- Yes!- Whoa!

7:05:02 > 7:05:03Yeah, look at that!

7:05:05 > 7:05:06Got it, got it, got it!

7:05:06 > 7:05:08Yes, we're in! Beautiful.

7:05:08 > 7:05:10I think I broke the camera.

7:05:10 > 7:05:12'After the fruit is picked, it goes on display,

7:05:12 > 7:05:15'so that visitors can learn about the different types of food

7:05:15 > 7:05:17'grown around the world.'

7:05:17 > 7:05:20OK, Hetty, so far we've climbed to the top of some trees,

7:05:20 > 7:05:21done a bit of pruning.

7:05:21 > 7:05:23We've picked some fruit, that was cool.

7:05:23 > 7:05:26You've told me that we can't have any chocolate. What's next?

7:05:26 > 7:05:28So the final job today involves chillies.

7:05:28 > 7:05:30- VOICE ECHOES:- Chillies. - DRAMATIC MUSIC

7:05:30 > 7:05:32'Not chillies!'

7:05:33 > 7:05:34MUSIC: Burn by Ellie Goulding

7:05:34 > 7:05:38'I still have nightmares about that live chilli-eating challenge.'

7:05:38 > 7:05:40# And we gonna let it burn. #

7:05:40 > 7:05:41LAUGHTER Barney's gone.

7:05:41 > 7:05:43- ECHOING: Barney's gone. - Barney? Barney?

7:05:43 > 7:05:44- Barney?- Yeah?

7:05:44 > 7:05:46Hi, Hetty. Chillies.

7:05:46 > 7:05:48Erm...love chillies.

7:05:48 > 7:05:49Wh...what, er, what does it involve?

7:05:49 > 7:05:51We're going to harvest some chillies.

7:05:51 > 7:05:54- We're going to harvest them? - Yeah.- We're going to pick them?

7:05:54 > 7:05:56- That's all we're doing? - That's all we're doing.

7:05:56 > 7:05:58I love picking chillies! Show me where they are!

7:05:58 > 7:05:59FLAMENCO MUSIC

7:05:59 > 7:06:01- IN SPANISH ACCENT: - 'Say hello to the habanero chilli.

7:06:01 > 7:06:04'These little fellas are hot. In fact, they are so hot,

7:06:04 > 7:06:07'we have to wear gloves before we can start picking them.'

7:06:07 > 7:06:10Why do think it's important to grow lots of different things?

7:06:10 > 7:06:11And why here at the Eden Project?

7:06:11 > 7:06:15Well, we want to show people how dependent they are upon plants.

7:06:15 > 7:06:20Without plants, we wouldn't be eating, we wouldn't have shelter.

7:06:20 > 7:06:23A lot of the clothes that we are wearing are made from plants,

7:06:23 > 7:06:25so we are here to reconnect people.

7:06:25 > 7:06:28Well, I happen to know from experience that a jalapeno,

7:06:28 > 7:06:31which is the kind of pepper you would get on your pizza,

7:06:31 > 7:06:33it's got a little bit of a tingle to it, hasn't it?

7:06:33 > 7:06:34- A little bit spicy.- Mm-hm.

7:06:34 > 7:06:38Well, these are 200 times hotter than one of those.

7:06:38 > 7:06:40That's how bad boy these are.

7:06:40 > 7:06:42They look nice and juicy, though, don't they?

7:06:42 > 7:06:44Mm, do you want to try one?

7:06:44 > 7:06:45No, thank you.

7:06:45 > 7:06:46MUSIC: Burn by Ellie Goulding

7:06:46 > 7:06:48'Yeah, steady on, Hetty.'

7:06:48 > 7:06:50I've got to say, I had a brilliant time here at the Eden Project.

7:06:50 > 7:06:52I can't wait to get back in the Blue Peter garden.

7:06:52 > 7:06:54I'm going to plant a massive papaya tree.

7:06:54 > 7:06:56Oh, and don't worry, Radzi, I've er...

7:06:56 > 7:06:57I've got you some chillies.

7:06:57 > 7:06:59FLAMENCO MUSIC

7:06:59 > 7:07:01I loved that chilli challenge. Very funny.

7:07:01 > 7:07:04But now it's time for one of our annual highlights because

7:07:04 > 7:07:06for years and years, Blue Peter presenters have been showing you

7:07:06 > 7:07:10how to make your very own creative Christmas cards.

7:07:10 > 7:07:12They're always great and you can make them cheaply and easily.

7:07:12 > 7:07:14We've made so many over the years.

7:07:14 > 7:07:15They're very easy to make.

7:07:15 > 7:07:17Each card has a pipe cleaner.

7:07:17 > 7:07:19All you need is some brightly-coloured card,

7:07:19 > 7:07:21scraps of fabric and glitter.

7:07:21 > 7:07:25It is a card with a difference, as it has a built-in snow globe.

7:07:25 > 7:07:28This card is really personal and one that money can't buy.

7:07:28 > 7:07:30And there is that glitter.

7:07:30 > 7:07:33And there we have a finished star.

7:07:33 > 7:07:35And there we have our finished Christmas card.

7:07:35 > 7:07:37I'll give it a little shake there.

7:07:37 > 7:07:38- Woo! - APPLAUSE

7:07:38 > 7:07:40It really is the best make of the year, isn't it?

7:07:40 > 7:07:42You're going to love what we've come up with for 2015.

7:07:42 > 7:07:43Have a look at this!

7:07:43 > 7:07:46It's your very own Christmas card, with a surprise cracker.

7:07:46 > 7:07:48SHE LAUGHS

7:07:48 > 7:07:50We love it and I'm going to show you exactly how to make it.

7:07:50 > 7:07:53So, for that, you are going to need the following things.

7:07:53 > 7:07:55A template from the Blue Peter website.

7:07:55 > 7:07:58You'll need some corrugated card, so basically a cardboard box.

7:07:58 > 7:08:00Some sparkly or coloured card,

7:08:00 > 7:08:01thin, shiny plastic and, of course,

7:08:01 > 7:08:03loads of photos of your family and friends.

7:08:03 > 7:08:05You can make it really personal and really fun.

7:08:05 > 7:08:08It really is such a good make, so listen carefully.

7:08:08 > 7:08:10The first thing you need to do is head to that

7:08:10 > 7:08:13trusty old Blue Peter website. Get yourself one of these templates.

7:08:13 > 7:08:15You can see it's kind of split in half there.

7:08:15 > 7:08:17You've got an H shape

7:08:17 > 7:08:19and then you got the end of your crackers there.

7:08:19 > 7:08:21So you need to cut around those and, when you've done that,

7:08:21 > 7:08:23grab your corrugated card

7:08:23 > 7:08:25and your shiny paper, like so,

7:08:25 > 7:08:27and then you need to, once again,

7:08:27 > 7:08:29draw around them, all the way around the outside of the stencil

7:08:29 > 7:08:31and cut out those shapes.

7:08:31 > 7:08:32So, once you've done that...

7:08:32 > 7:08:36Try and be neat, because you will need those shapes to be pretty exact

7:08:36 > 7:08:38if you want your mechanism to work.

7:08:38 > 7:08:40So...we're going to use the H first.

7:08:40 > 7:08:42You can see I've cut around nice and neatly there.

7:08:42 > 7:08:44Take your time with that. Ask an adult to help.

7:08:44 > 7:08:47And, with the H, the first thing I'm going to do

7:08:47 > 7:08:49is grab my bit of plastic.

7:08:49 > 7:08:52You can see there, I've just got a little strip of plastic

7:08:52 > 7:08:53and all I've done there is used it

7:08:53 > 7:08:55off a previous greeting card.

7:08:55 > 7:08:58Nice and easy, but any plastic really will do.

7:08:58 > 7:09:00So...wrap it round your H, like so.

7:09:00 > 7:09:03It can be a bit fiddly, this bit, so take your time.

7:09:03 > 7:09:05And make sure it's not too tight,

7:09:05 > 7:09:08otherwise your mechanism isn't going to work.

7:09:08 > 7:09:10So I'll just stick it nice and neatly there. And you should see,

7:09:10 > 7:09:13when I hold it up, that that kind of just moves around.

7:09:13 > 7:09:14It's very delicate at this stage,

7:09:14 > 7:09:16but it is moving and that's going to make

7:09:16 > 7:09:18our cracker pop a little bit later on.

7:09:18 > 7:09:21Now, grab your two shiny bits.

7:09:21 > 7:09:22These are your cracker ends

7:09:22 > 7:09:25and turn one of them over, like so.

7:09:25 > 7:09:27Now, you've got your two ends and I've just put a little bit

7:09:27 > 7:09:29of double-sided sticky tape on the end there.

7:09:29 > 7:09:32So, grab your shiny side and just simply stick that down,

7:09:32 > 7:09:35make it really neat and line-up...

7:09:35 > 7:09:36Can you see that?

7:09:36 > 7:09:38..with the edge of your kind of H shape there.

7:09:38 > 7:09:41Then turn it over, like so,

7:09:41 > 7:09:43grab your other bit.

7:09:43 > 7:09:44And then stick it,

7:09:44 > 7:09:47like so, along that H.

7:09:47 > 7:09:51There we go. And, once you've patted it down, hopefully this will work...

7:09:51 > 7:09:53Eh! It certainly does!

7:09:53 > 7:09:55And, once you've done it nice and neatly,

7:09:55 > 7:09:56it should look something like this one.

7:09:56 > 7:09:59And it should really kind of pop like that.

7:09:59 > 7:10:01Now, if I grab this one, I'll just show you the back of it,

7:10:01 > 7:10:04because it is still looking a little bit messy at the back there.

7:10:04 > 7:10:06So, the next thing you need to do...

7:10:06 > 7:10:08grab your paper, like so.

7:10:08 > 7:10:11I've gone for silver, cos it's nice and festive.

7:10:11 > 7:10:14Should be A4 size. Cut that in half.

7:10:14 > 7:10:17Then, all I have done is just simply folded it in half again, like that.

7:10:17 > 7:10:22Now, we are going to plonk our cracker into the middle of the card.

7:10:22 > 7:10:26I am just going to use a little bit of double-sided sticky tape, like so.

7:10:26 > 7:10:29And then, neatly, hopefully, I am just going - oh, this side! -

7:10:29 > 7:10:33I am just going to plonk it in, like that. There we go.

7:10:33 > 7:10:35Hopefully, that will stick down.

7:10:35 > 7:10:37And then, fold your card over,

7:10:37 > 7:10:41like so. Make sure your sides are out, so they don't get stuck down.

7:10:41 > 7:10:43Once I have gone along, like that,

7:10:43 > 7:10:46it should work, fingers crossed! There we go!

7:10:46 > 7:10:49Now it's time for the fun bit, cos we get to decorate our cracker

7:10:49 > 7:10:51and make it look really realistic.

7:10:51 > 7:10:54So, for that, I have just, kind of, done a cracker shape, really.

7:10:54 > 7:10:58You can do anything you want. That is the whole fun part of this make -

7:10:58 > 7:10:59you can make it your own.

7:10:59 > 7:11:02I am going to make it look like a cracker, with my cracker middle.

7:11:02 > 7:11:05Boom. And then, time for a bit of decoration.

7:11:05 > 7:11:08So, it is Christmas, of course. I have gone for a beautiful little

7:11:08 > 7:11:11Christmas pud. That is made out of foam. We have just used a pen,

7:11:11 > 7:11:15to make the raisins on there. And some little baubles. Very pretty.

7:11:15 > 7:11:18Then, of course, all crackers have a little bit of glittery ribbon

7:11:18 > 7:11:22on the side. Again, we have used some foam there.

7:11:22 > 7:11:24I am going to put it on the side,

7:11:24 > 7:11:25so it looks like one bit of the ribbon.

7:11:25 > 7:11:29And on the other side here. It is really starting to take shape now.

7:11:29 > 7:11:32But we need our little surprise in there. So, I thought,

7:11:32 > 7:11:35"What does everyone want at Christmas?" Of course -

7:11:35 > 7:11:37Barney and Radzi's faces. That's definitely what I want.

7:11:37 > 7:11:41So, I have got Radzi on this side, in his little winter scarf.

7:11:41 > 7:11:44Look at him! And then, Barney, cos I'm missing him today,

7:11:44 > 7:11:46I have got him in his little winter scarf, there, as well!

7:11:46 > 7:11:49So, we are getting there! Look at that! Of course, you want it

7:11:49 > 7:11:53to stand up, looking very proud on your mantelpiece, so to do that,

7:11:53 > 7:11:56grab a little bit of extra card from earlier.

7:11:56 > 7:11:59I am just using some silver card, with a bit of double-sided tape.

7:11:59 > 7:12:02Plonk that on the back, like so. Doesn't have to be too neat,

7:12:02 > 7:12:06but leave a little space at the top for your Christmas message.

7:12:06 > 7:12:07Think how cool you can make it.

7:12:07 > 7:12:09You can put anything on there you want.

7:12:09 > 7:12:12It's your surprise cracker card! We made loads earlier.

7:12:12 > 7:12:16They really do look so cool. We have got one here of little Iggy's face!

7:12:16 > 7:12:19She is wearing a little hat. We have got a Christmas wreath there.

7:12:19 > 7:12:23Blue Peter ship. You can honestly do anything you want.

7:12:23 > 7:12:26All the details and the templates you are going to need are on

7:12:26 > 7:12:28the Blue Peter website...

7:12:28 > 7:12:32I love this, you know, and I am not the only one. Check this out.

7:12:32 > 7:12:35It's THE Christmas card that is taking the television world

7:12:35 > 7:12:37by storm.

7:12:37 > 7:12:41From everyone at Casualty, a merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

7:12:41 > 7:12:44- BOTH: One, two, three! - Whay! Look at that!

7:12:44 > 7:12:47Thank you for this fantastic Christmas card you have made me.

7:12:47 > 7:12:50- Does it do something? - Yeah, we pull it.- Ooh!

7:12:50 > 7:12:52BOTH: Have a great Christmas.

7:12:52 > 7:12:55Thank you, Blue Peter! You're fantastic!

7:12:57 > 7:12:59Susanna Reid, of course it does something!

7:12:59 > 7:13:01It's your surprise card. We want you to make one.

7:13:01 > 7:13:04Send us anything you like of your Christmas card.

7:13:04 > 7:13:08The address you need is...

7:13:08 > 7:13:11I am going to go have a sit-down. Make your cards! Radzi...

7:13:11 > 7:13:14I love it when something is really simple, yet awesome,

7:13:14 > 7:13:17at the same time. Now, though, another Christmas tradition,

7:13:17 > 7:13:22which began on Blue Peter over 50 years ago, is this -

7:13:22 > 7:13:24the advent calendar. You came running, Linds.

7:13:24 > 7:13:27- We love the advent calendar.- We do! - The special part of it is,

7:13:27 > 7:13:30for the next four shows, we'll be lighting one of those candles,

7:13:30 > 7:13:33to count down until our Christmas show on December 17th. We can't wait.

7:13:33 > 7:13:37We really cannot wait. The candles here are battery-powered.

7:13:37 > 7:13:39Can we ask for the lights just to be dimmed a tiny bit?

7:13:39 > 7:13:43As I rotate this, you can see we've already got there one candle lit,

7:13:43 > 7:13:46which means we are only three weeks away from the Christmas show

7:13:46 > 7:13:50- and I cannot wait!- I have got your present. Have you got mine?- No.

7:13:50 > 7:13:53You need to go shopping, Radz. Let's walk this way,

7:13:53 > 7:13:56to the Big Badge Wall, covered in all of your brilliant post.

7:13:56 > 7:13:59And it is looking very colourful this week. Sophie, who is 12, from Essex,

7:13:59 > 7:14:02has done this. She has got a little Blue Peter Shelley there,

7:14:02 > 7:14:05the badge and, of course, she has written us a little

7:14:05 > 7:14:08Shelley the Tortoise poem. If I open it up, one line is,

7:14:08 > 7:14:10"Shelley loves being with the BP Crew

7:14:10 > 7:14:12"As there's always so much she can do."

7:14:12 > 7:14:15Sophie, we love it. You're a genius. Thank you.

7:14:15 > 7:14:18I also love what Ava from West Sussex has made. Look at this!

7:14:18 > 7:14:21This me at the World Gymnastics Championships, doing a handstand,

7:14:21 > 7:14:25with a big smile on my face. Why? Because I now love gymnastics.

7:14:25 > 7:14:28- Ava, thank you so much.- That was my favourite of your challenges.

7:14:28 > 7:14:31- Really?- Clemmy, who is 12, has sent this brilliant one in.

7:14:31 > 7:14:34Have a look. It is little Barney, with his glasses on and his beard.

7:14:34 > 7:14:38I love that. Holding his drone. It says, "Blink and you might miss it!"

7:14:38 > 7:14:41- They were SO fast, these drones. - Unbelievably quick.- Amazing.

7:14:41 > 7:14:45Thank you to every single one of you who made a piece of art that is on

7:14:45 > 7:14:48this board here and to anyone who sent in post. Keep them coming in,

7:14:48 > 7:14:51- with regards to the Christmas cards. - If you do send something in,

7:14:51 > 7:14:54remember, we need your full name, your address and we need your

7:14:54 > 7:14:57date of birth. Otherwise, we can't give you a BP badge -

7:14:57 > 7:15:00and you definitely want one. If you are between 6 and 15,

7:15:00 > 7:15:03you can get your hands on one, because it is all about the badge.

7:15:03 > 7:15:06It is also all about the Blue Peter website.

7:15:06 > 7:15:09There is loads going on there. We have got the Blue Peter fan club,

7:15:09 > 7:15:11which happens twice a week, on a Tuesday and on a Sunday.

7:15:11 > 7:15:14There is also an exclusive clip, including a drawing made by

7:15:14 > 7:15:18a Hollywood director, the man behind The Good Dinosaur,

7:15:18 > 7:15:22who has drawn this picture of a dinosaur, with bits on it sent in

7:15:22 > 7:15:25by you guys. So, well done for that. Jump online if you want to see that.

7:15:25 > 7:15:28However, now it is time for me to refine my climbing skills,

7:15:28 > 7:15:32to experience sea survival, because I am about to enter

7:15:32 > 7:15:37one of THE most extreme working environments anywhere. Help.

7:15:40 > 7:15:42There are over 6,000 wind turbines

7:15:42 > 7:15:46in the UK, which help generate power for our homes.

7:15:46 > 7:15:49But how much do we actually know about wind energy?

7:15:49 > 7:15:52Well, to answer that, I will be going to the top of a turbine

7:15:52 > 7:15:56in the sea, to find out how man can harness the power of the wind.

7:15:58 > 7:16:05But before I can go near 130 metres of turbine, I need to undergo

7:16:05 > 7:16:07some serious training.

7:16:07 > 7:16:10I have come to this training centre, where you can learn

7:16:10 > 7:16:13some of the skills you need for some of the most extreme

7:16:13 > 7:16:15working environments in the world.

7:16:16 > 7:16:20Because an emergency could occur while I am at sea or working

7:16:20 > 7:16:22at heights, I need to prepare for the worst.

7:16:22 > 7:16:27So, I will be taking on four stages of tough turbine training.

7:16:28 > 7:16:31Stage one...

7:16:31 > 7:16:35'OK, so I am in a pool. It is actually quite relaxing.

7:16:35 > 7:16:40'All under the watchful gaze of Ken, my gentle sea survival instructor.'

7:16:40 > 7:16:43Come on! Come on! Push it out! Come on!

7:16:43 > 7:16:45Keep on going! Come on!

7:16:45 > 7:16:46Come on, lads!

7:16:48 > 7:16:52I have done a lot of courses in the army and, mainly, I find that

7:16:52 > 7:16:54motivation is my biggest asset.

7:16:54 > 7:16:55It's imminent!

7:16:57 > 7:17:01'Sea survival just got serious. and the next part is even tougher.'

7:17:01 > 7:17:04Because work on a wind turbine can be truly dangerous,

7:17:04 > 7:17:08you don't know how or when you will have to get off that wind turbine.

7:17:08 > 7:17:11So, if the worst comes to the worst, you might have to do what I am about

7:17:11 > 7:17:13to do now, which is step off.

7:17:13 > 7:17:16Look straight ahead. Step off.

7:17:18 > 7:17:22'And Ken's punishing training just kept on coming!'

7:17:22 > 7:17:23Come on! Push it out!

7:17:23 > 7:17:25Come on! That fire is coming at you here!

7:17:25 > 7:17:27Come on! Move it!

7:17:28 > 7:17:30Come on, lads, push it out!

7:17:41 > 7:17:43Stage two...

7:17:45 > 7:17:48'If we need to jump into the sea, a life raft would be deployed.

7:17:48 > 7:17:51'I need to be able to climb on top of it and flip it over,

7:17:51 > 7:17:55'using just my own body weight.'

7:17:55 > 7:17:56'Here goes.'

7:17:59 > 7:18:00'Whoa! I did it!'

7:18:02 > 7:18:04At sea, speed is vital to our survival, as we would be facing

7:18:04 > 7:18:07freezing water temperatures.

7:18:07 > 7:18:10'With the raft the right way up, the team and I need to get inside

7:18:10 > 7:18:12'as quickly as possible.'

7:18:12 > 7:18:15That was 50 seconds!

7:18:15 > 7:18:17'Nice work, guys.'

7:18:18 > 7:18:21Stage three...

7:18:22 > 7:18:25'The most dangerous part of my adventure is transferring

7:18:25 > 7:18:27'from the boat to the turbine.'

7:18:27 > 7:18:32All that's between me and the sea is a steep - and I mean steep - ladder.

7:18:32 > 7:18:34And so to help me get to grips with the climb

7:18:34 > 7:18:36is Michael, my instructor.

7:18:36 > 7:18:39Well, Michael, I am kitted out, ready and raring to go.

7:18:39 > 7:18:41What exactly have I got on here?

7:18:41 > 7:18:43First of all, you have your harness, to keep you safe.

7:18:43 > 7:18:46And then you have your lanyards, two of them.

7:18:46 > 7:18:50- What they'll do is catch you if you do fall.- Very important.

7:18:50 > 7:18:56With my harness in place, I attempt my first climb. But there are rules.

7:18:56 > 7:18:59I have to keep three points of my body in constant contact with

7:18:59 > 7:19:02- the ladder...- Good. - ..as well as one of my hooks.

7:19:04 > 7:19:07On top of this, my hook should be placed three rungs above me

7:19:07 > 7:19:10on the ladder, and this takes practice.

7:19:12 > 7:19:15That's done, that's done, now take off the...

7:19:15 > 7:19:19- No, the rope!- Great.

7:19:21 > 7:19:23Tell you what, there's a lot to remember.

7:19:23 > 7:19:27It is one thing doing it in here, a warm, comfortable environment,

7:19:27 > 7:19:31- but actually, if it matters, would you panic?- That's what this is for.

7:19:31 > 7:19:33No panicking.

7:19:34 > 7:19:37Stage four, the controlled descent.

7:19:38 > 7:19:41In order to complete my training, I need to test my

7:19:41 > 7:19:44head for heights as I'm lowered down this massive tower.

7:19:46 > 7:19:49I am now 30 metres above the ground on a training tower.

7:19:49 > 7:19:52Basically, this is going to simulate what would happen

7:19:52 > 7:19:55if something were to go wrong on the actual wind turbine

7:19:55 > 7:19:57and I would need to evacuate.

7:19:57 > 7:19:59So for now, it's time for me to let go of this rope,

7:19:59 > 7:20:03keep my fingers crossed and say, "Mum, I'm flying!"

7:20:03 > 7:20:06Yes! Whoohoo!

7:20:08 > 7:20:11Oh, yeah! Mum, I can fly!

7:20:11 > 7:20:13Yeah.

7:20:19 > 7:20:22There's a leap of faith at the very top

7:20:22 > 7:20:26when you think, "I'm trusting the rope. All I've got is this rope."

7:20:26 > 7:20:28And then you just enjoy it and you float down.

7:20:28 > 7:20:31You feel like a superhero. I like training for the wind turbine.

7:20:31 > 7:20:34Bring on the real thing.

7:20:34 > 7:20:35Don't miss next week,

7:20:35 > 7:20:38when I take you to one of the most extreme working environments

7:20:38 > 7:20:42I have ever seen, and put my training to the test.

7:20:45 > 7:20:47There are some really cool jobs,

7:20:47 > 7:20:50and working on a wind turbine is one of them.

7:20:50 > 7:20:53Now, though, from wind to rain.

7:20:53 > 7:20:57It's time to welcome back to Blue Peter Mr Greg Foot!

7:20:57 > 7:20:59APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

7:20:59 > 7:21:02It's Greg. What have you got for us today? I'm so excited.

7:21:02 > 7:21:06Right, I want to bring the weather from outdoors indoors. OK.

7:21:06 > 7:21:09I want to make cloud and rain right here in the Blue Peter studio.

7:21:09 > 7:21:11I definitely want to see that as well. What's this?

7:21:11 > 7:21:14Let's start with the cloud. So I'm going to make you a little cloud

7:21:14 > 7:21:17and then we're going to super-size it. First of all, question for you.

7:21:17 > 7:21:21- What is a cloud made of?- Easy, water.- Good man. Yeah, water.

7:21:21 > 7:21:24But the real question is how does that water clump together

7:21:24 > 7:21:26into a cloud and how does it stay up there?

7:21:26 > 7:21:27So all around us is air,

7:21:27 > 7:21:29and that's made of a whole bunch of different gases.

7:21:29 > 7:21:31You've got oxygen that you breathe in.

7:21:31 > 7:21:33You've got carbon dioxide that you breathe out.

7:21:33 > 7:21:36A whole host of others, including water, but as a gas.

7:21:36 > 7:21:38- We call it water vapour.- OK.

7:21:38 > 7:21:40Now, as all that gas rises, that water vapour rises,

7:21:40 > 7:21:43it cools down as it gets to the top of the atmosphere.

7:21:43 > 7:21:47And when it cools down enough, it can turn from a gas to a liquid.

7:21:47 > 7:21:50If you think about when you breathe on a really cold window, like that.

7:21:50 > 7:21:52- Oh, condensation?- Yeah. So the water vapour,

7:21:52 > 7:21:55the gas in your breath, cools down into little droplets that you see.

7:21:55 > 7:21:58It is called condensation. That's all a cloud is.

7:21:58 > 7:22:01- Just condensed water vapour. Now, can you start pumping?- Absolutely.

7:22:01 > 7:22:03Some eye protection for you first.

7:22:03 > 7:22:06- Remember, safety never takes a day off on Blue Peter.- True that.

7:22:06 > 7:22:09Right, 15 pumps, please. So what you're doing right now is

7:22:09 > 7:22:11you're pumping air into the bottle.

7:22:11 > 7:22:12And the air has got water vapour.

7:22:12 > 7:22:14I will put a little bit of water in there as well.

7:22:14 > 7:22:16So you're building up the pressure.

7:22:16 > 7:22:18When the pressure is enough, I'm going to pop the top off.

7:22:18 > 7:22:20The pressure is going to decrease, which actually cools

7:22:20 > 7:22:22the whole thing down. So it's going to be like

7:22:22 > 7:22:25what happens up in the atmosphere. It cools it down and hopefully,

7:22:25 > 7:22:28we'll get a cloud. So it needs to actually have something to

7:22:28 > 7:22:31grip hold of. Those water droplets need to grip onto something.

7:22:31 > 7:22:34Up there in the sky, it could be salt from the sea,

7:22:34 > 7:22:36it could be dust, it could be soot from a wildfire.

7:22:36 > 7:22:40- I put a little bit of soot in here. Are you ready?- Yes, I am.

7:22:40 > 7:22:42Three, two, one!

7:22:42 > 7:22:45- Yes!- Yeah!- See that cloud in there?

7:22:45 > 7:22:46There's a cloud in the bottle.

7:22:46 > 7:22:49There is probably millions of tiny little water droplets

7:22:49 > 7:22:51- in there to make our cloud. - That's crazy.

7:22:51 > 7:22:54So I'm going to make a much bigger version of that to fill

7:22:54 > 7:22:56the whole studio afterwards.

7:22:56 > 7:22:59- The question, I guess, is how it actually stays up there.- Yeah...

7:22:59 > 7:23:02And it's because the droplets are so, so tiny.

7:23:02 > 7:23:03They're surrounded by air,

7:23:03 > 7:23:05they're light enough to float up there.

7:23:05 > 7:23:08But once they start banging together and the cloud grows,

7:23:08 > 7:23:10the droplets get so big that they can start to fall.

7:23:10 > 7:23:12- And that of course is...- Rain.- Rain.

7:23:12 > 7:23:16Question for you, Radzi from Blue Peter. What shape is a raindrop?

7:23:16 > 7:23:20- That's easy. It's like a teardrop, so it looks a bit like that.- Uh-uh!

7:23:20 > 7:23:24I'm going to show you. Right, this is a raindrop levitation device.

7:23:24 > 7:23:26- Yes!- You're going to love this.

7:23:26 > 7:23:30We obviously can't skydive next to a raindrop to see its shape.

7:23:30 > 7:23:32So what this is going to do is air is going to rush up

7:23:32 > 7:23:34and I'm going to try to keep a raindrop in place,

7:23:34 > 7:23:36so the air is going to be rushing around it.

7:23:36 > 7:23:38- It's the same as what happens as it falls.- Wow.

7:23:38 > 7:23:41- So, let's give this a go. My air is on.- Yeah.

7:23:41 > 7:23:45Now what I'm going to try to do is put a raindrop in there.

7:23:45 > 7:23:50More air! There we go, there we go!

7:23:50 > 7:23:52- Oh!- Now, that's not bad.

7:23:52 > 7:23:55- Very hard to do live.- Absolutely.

7:23:55 > 7:23:58- So I filmed it in slow motion earlier in the rehearsal.- Amazing!

7:23:58 > 7:24:00Have a look and tell me what the shape is. Watch this.

7:24:00 > 7:24:02This is amazing. Watch.

7:24:02 > 7:24:05- Out it comes.- It's flat!- Yes.

7:24:05 > 7:24:10- It's really flat.- Look underneath. How gorgeous is that?

7:24:10 > 7:24:14This, Radz, is my favourite fact.

7:24:14 > 7:24:17You'd think a raindrop is round. Spherical, like a ball.

7:24:17 > 7:24:19When they are really, really small, they are that shape.

7:24:19 > 7:24:21But when they get bigger, they fall,

7:24:21 > 7:24:24and they fall fast, like 15-20 miles per hour.

7:24:24 > 7:24:27They're falling and all that air is hitting them underneath.

7:24:27 > 7:24:28And it squashes the bottom of the raindrop

7:24:28 > 7:24:31and you get that beautiful burger bun shape.

7:24:31 > 7:24:34Why you said teardrop is you always see it running down a window.

7:24:34 > 7:24:36Or dripping out of the tap.

7:24:36 > 7:24:38What that does is it pulls some of it behind it

7:24:38 > 7:24:41and it kind of creates this tail. There you go.

7:24:41 > 7:24:43- There you go. Is it all a big myth?- Yeah.

7:24:43 > 7:24:45Now, Greg, I hate to hurry you but I want to see the big one!

7:24:45 > 7:24:47Let's do it. Come over here, my friend.

7:24:47 > 7:24:50Right, what you're going to need is to put on this poncho.

7:24:50 > 7:24:52Because this could get a little bit damp.

7:24:52 > 7:24:55Remember, a cloud is just trillions of drops of water vapour

7:24:55 > 7:24:59- that have condensed, that have cooled down into water droplets.- OK.

7:24:59 > 7:25:02So, Tom, can you bring all my ingredients for a cloud, please?

7:25:02 > 7:25:05- Tom, come out, my friend. - Thanks, Tom.- What's in this?

7:25:05 > 7:25:08In this is everything you need to make a cloud. Thanks, buddy.

7:25:08 > 7:25:12So what we're going to do is we have made ourselves nice and safe.

7:25:12 > 7:25:15Now, we need something very, very cold, because when it's up there

7:25:15 > 7:25:19in the cloud, that's what causes the cloud to condense, to cool down.

7:25:19 > 7:25:22So what I've got here is liquid nitrogen.

7:25:22 > 7:25:24Whilst you're doing that, I do have to say, please,

7:25:24 > 7:25:28for goodness' sake, do not try this at home. That's why we've got masks.

7:25:28 > 7:25:32- Greg knows exactly what he's doing. - We've got some liquid nitrogen.

7:25:32 > 7:25:34Now I've also got some hot water.

7:25:34 > 7:25:36The hot water is going to go into my liquid nitrogen.

7:25:36 > 7:25:38It's going to turn it from a liquid into a gas.

7:25:38 > 7:25:41Cold gas up in the air, that's going to cool down the water vapour

7:25:41 > 7:25:44- in the sky and hopefully make a cloud.- I want to see this!

7:25:44 > 7:25:47- Are we ready for this? Everyone on the floor happy?- Yeah!

7:25:47 > 7:25:50OK, so in three, two, one!

7:25:52 > 7:25:55ALL: Whoa! Wahey!

7:25:55 > 7:25:59- That is amazing. We've just made a cloud on Blue Peter, Mum.- Yeah!

7:25:59 > 7:26:02Can we see that again? That's it in slow motion. Look at that!

7:26:02 > 7:26:07- Oh, that looks good.- That's nice! - There it is. Our cloud.

7:26:07 > 7:26:09All those water droplets in the air. Yes!

7:26:09 > 7:26:11Greg, I love when you come on, because we learn so much.

7:26:11 > 7:26:14- But come over this way. - This is the science I love!

7:26:14 > 7:26:16Radzi absolutely loves this. At the start of the show,

7:26:16 > 7:26:19we asked you lot at home to get in touch with us and let us know

7:26:19 > 7:26:23if anything could rain out of the sky, what would it be and why?

7:26:23 > 7:26:29- There you go, Radz. Oh, you're quite wet.- I'm very wet. I'm in the cloud!

7:26:29 > 7:26:31Navy Blue Pickle Star Fish - great name -

7:26:31 > 7:26:35says it should rain massive, buttery crumpets. I like that.

7:26:35 > 7:26:39Now, I like Gold Robo-Bluebell Star, because they say sweets,

7:26:39 > 7:26:42dogs, cats, horses, unicorns, hamsters and crowns. You're not...

7:26:42 > 7:26:44- You're hedging your bets. I love it.- This is great.

7:26:44 > 7:26:45Someone's gone for a food theme.

7:26:45 > 7:26:48Indigo Singing Orca has gone for spaghetti bolognese

7:26:48 > 7:26:52- and garlic bread.- Such a good meal, though. Amethyst Vanilla...

7:26:52 > 7:26:55I want to read you a really, really good one. This is for you.

7:26:55 > 7:26:58Crimson Flute Canary says magical homework pens that just do

7:26:58 > 7:27:03- all your homework for you.- Genius. - Love it. Love it.

7:27:03 > 7:27:07Now, Clarice Cheeky Swan says, "I would make it rain computers

7:27:07 > 7:27:13- "because I can use them when I'm not allowed." I like it.- Cheeky.

7:27:13 > 7:27:15Here's another animal one. Amethyst Vanilla Chicken

7:27:15 > 7:27:17wants it to rain chimpanzees,

7:27:17 > 7:27:20- orang-utans and gibbons. - Big monkey fan. I like that.

7:27:20 > 7:27:21I kind of agree with this one.

7:27:21 > 7:27:23Lime Smiling Conker says, "I would make it..."

7:27:23 > 7:27:25There's so much cloud over there still!

7:27:25 > 7:27:27"I would make it rain dogs, as I really like dogs,

7:27:27 > 7:27:30"and then I could have loads." I like that.

7:27:30 > 7:27:34- Imagine loads of Iggies just coming out the sky.- Pretty sweet.

7:27:34 > 7:27:36Now, time for one more.

7:27:36 > 7:27:38"I would rain genies."

7:27:38 > 7:27:41So they have found a flaw in the question and exploited it.

7:27:41 > 7:27:44- Good work.- As you know, if you have been on the Blue Peter fanclub page,

7:27:44 > 7:27:47we have been playing presenter bingo and the phrase today was,

7:27:47 > 7:27:48"It's all about the badge."

7:27:48 > 7:27:51And the person who got that was, I can reveal...

7:27:51 > 7:27:54Quartz Brainy Kid.

7:27:54 > 7:27:57So, Quartz Brainy Kid, well done to you. Good job.

7:27:57 > 7:27:59That's all that we've got time for today,

7:28:08 > 7:28:11Now, my training is done, but it's now time for me

7:28:11 > 7:28:14to climb up a wind turbine and see just how it works.

7:28:14 > 7:28:15Make sure you watch that.

7:28:15 > 7:28:17And this is a bit of a tongue twister,

7:28:17 > 7:28:19but we're looking at the amazing tech behind the puppet penguins

7:28:19 > 7:28:22in Mr Popper's Penguin Musical.
