0:00:03 > 0:00:06On today's show we've got a very special guest

0:00:06 > 0:00:08because Shaun the Sheep is here.

0:00:08 > 0:00:12- It's going to be BAAA-rilliant! - Good. EWE better believe it.

0:00:12 > 0:00:15- It's going to be RAM-packed. - We could go on for days.

0:00:15 > 0:00:16Nothing's going to stop us.

0:00:16 > 0:00:18Oi!

0:00:35 > 0:00:37Hello and welcome to Blue Peter.

0:00:37 > 0:00:40Coming up on today's show, find out who's been shortlisted for

0:00:40 > 0:00:44Young Sports Personality Of The Year 2015

0:00:44 > 0:00:47and which one of you at home helped shortlist the winner.

0:00:47 > 0:00:50As well as that, we are SO excited because Shaun the Sheep is

0:00:50 > 0:00:53back for a Christmas special, so he's popped into the studio

0:00:53 > 0:00:56with his new cheeky llama friends, as well as director Jay Grace. Hello!

0:00:56 > 0:00:58- Hello.- Welcome.- Hi.

0:00:58 > 0:01:00Plus we'll be showing you how to make one of these.

0:01:00 > 0:01:03A Christmas tree with a difference.

0:01:03 > 0:01:05They ain't baubles. Thems are chocolates!

0:01:05 > 0:01:09Yummy, can't wait for that. But first, do you remember this man?

0:01:09 > 0:01:11And do you remember this?

0:01:11 > 0:01:14It is, of course, Tim Peake and his mission patch

0:01:14 > 0:01:17and in just a few days' time he is actually going into space,

0:01:17 > 0:01:19and if you're wondering how he's feeling...

0:01:19 > 0:01:21Don't eat the chocolate yet!

0:01:21 > 0:01:24..Barney, before he went on his holidays, went to find out.

0:01:24 > 0:01:26You can eat it now.

0:01:26 > 0:01:29Here on Blue Peter we like to think big.

0:01:29 > 0:01:32That's why, back in September 2014,

0:01:32 > 0:01:36we launched a competition to design the mission patch for Tim Peake,

0:01:36 > 0:01:39the very first British European Space Agency astronaut to

0:01:39 > 0:01:42journey to the International Space Station.

0:01:42 > 0:01:46Thousands of you applied and one lucky winner was picked.

0:01:46 > 0:01:48Well done, Troy.

0:01:48 > 0:01:50Oh, wow! I love the apple.

0:01:50 > 0:01:51That's amazing.

0:01:51 > 0:01:53But what happens next? Well...

0:01:53 > 0:01:55I've come to catch up with Tim before he blasts off

0:01:55 > 0:01:59on his 200-mile journey in THAT direction to begin his mission.

0:02:01 > 0:02:04Tim must spend six months on the International Space Station

0:02:04 > 0:02:07undertaking loads of scientific experiments.

0:02:08 > 0:02:12But how do you prepare for a once-in-a-lifetime trip like this?

0:02:12 > 0:02:15Well, you come here to the European Astronaut Centre in Germany,

0:02:15 > 0:02:17of course.

0:02:17 > 0:02:22This place is amazing. It's like something out of a sci-fi film.

0:02:22 > 0:02:25Here you'll find life-size replicas of parts of the Space Station

0:02:25 > 0:02:28where the astronauts train and get ready for their missions.

0:02:28 > 0:02:32Tim's been here for a few days doing his final preparations and

0:02:32 > 0:02:36I can't wait to find out how he's feeling this close to the launch.

0:02:36 > 0:02:38Tim, it's genuinely really nice to see you

0:02:38 > 0:02:41and the last time I saw you, you didn't have the patch on.

0:02:41 > 0:02:43- Look at it go!- It's fantastic. I love wearing it.

0:02:43 > 0:02:45People ask me all the time about the patch

0:02:45 > 0:02:47and I just love explaining all the details in it.

0:02:47 > 0:02:50It will be nice to explain what it was like wearing it in space

0:02:50 > 0:02:51which is only a few weeks away now.

0:02:51 > 0:02:54It's getting really close now and the closer I get to launch,

0:02:54 > 0:02:55the more excited I get.

0:02:55 > 0:02:57- This is only a small part of the Space Station, isn't it?- It is.

0:02:57 > 0:02:59This is the Columbus Laboratory,

0:02:59 > 0:03:01where I'll be spending most of my time doing experiments.

0:03:01 > 0:03:03It looks great from the outside,

0:03:03 > 0:03:05but I imagine it looks even better on the inside, Tim.

0:03:05 > 0:03:09- Do you think we could...- Sounds good to me. Let's go and have a look.

0:03:09 > 0:03:11Thought you'd never ask.

0:03:11 > 0:03:15- Wow, it's like the ultimate den, isn't it?- It certainly is.

0:03:15 > 0:03:18Welcome to Node II. The Space Station flies that way.

0:03:18 > 0:03:21That's forward and that's Earth-facing. That's down.

0:03:21 > 0:03:24So the most important thing about Node II is where we sleep.

0:03:24 > 0:03:27- That's these bits. - The crew quarters.- Amazing.

0:03:27 > 0:03:29It's really nice to have a little bit of your own space

0:03:29 > 0:03:32that you can personalise, get some family photographs up there.

0:03:32 > 0:03:35A huge family event for most people is Christmas.

0:03:35 > 0:03:37- You're going to miss Christmas. - I am going to miss Christmas

0:03:37 > 0:03:40and obviously I'm going to really miss family and friends

0:03:40 > 0:03:43but it's such a unique experience to be onboard the Space Station.

0:03:43 > 0:03:46- In many respects, it's going to be really fun.- You going to do a party?

0:03:46 > 0:03:49- Decorations? Red hats?- We will. There's a Christmas tree onboard.

0:03:49 > 0:03:51There's a few Santa hats so we'll have a celebration

0:03:51 > 0:03:53although I'm sure it will be a working day.

0:03:53 > 0:03:56What about Christmas dinner? Do you have roast potatoes and turkey?

0:03:56 > 0:03:58It all comes in foil packets, doesn't it?

0:03:58 > 0:04:00Christmas dinner's a bit of a surprise because we actually

0:04:00 > 0:04:01get a crew care package,

0:04:01 > 0:04:04so our family and friends can send us some up,

0:04:04 > 0:04:06so, hopefully there'll be maybe a fruit pudding or something

0:04:06 > 0:04:08comes up for Christmas Day.

0:04:08 > 0:04:11'So whilst we're all fast asleep waiting for Santa on Earth,

0:04:11 > 0:04:14'Tim will be floating above us in his sleeping bag.

0:04:14 > 0:04:16'I've got to give this a go!'

0:04:16 > 0:04:18- So you wear it like a jacket, really?- That's right.

0:04:18 > 0:04:21You normally Velcro it to the wall and step in it.

0:04:21 > 0:04:23If you don't strap in, you'll float around while you're asleep.

0:04:23 > 0:04:25You'll float around and your arms will naturally

0:04:25 > 0:04:27float up in front of your face.

0:04:27 > 0:04:30Some astronauts have reported being woken up by their own arm

0:04:30 > 0:04:33- hitting them in the face because it's just floating around.- Amazing.

0:04:33 > 0:04:35So you get to that natural sleeping position.

0:04:35 > 0:04:38You've got some work to do while you're here, haven't you?

0:04:38 > 0:04:39Yeah, we have got some work to do.

0:04:39 > 0:04:42I'll be spending a lot of my time in the Columbus Module doing

0:04:42 > 0:04:43scientific experiments.

0:04:43 > 0:04:46- Let me show you the way. - Can't even get out.

0:04:49 > 0:04:51Wow!

0:04:51 > 0:04:53- Welcome to Columbus.- Thank you.

0:04:53 > 0:04:56Being in space, one of the great things is the floor and the roof are

0:04:56 > 0:04:59just as useful work spaces as the walls

0:04:59 > 0:05:03so we pack everything into the whole volume of Columbus.

0:05:03 > 0:05:06In the deck we have lots of our life support systems,

0:05:06 > 0:05:09so water cooling systems, air ventilation filters,

0:05:09 > 0:05:11power supply, all of the things you need to survive.

0:05:11 > 0:05:14Let's talk about what you're doing. What's the mission for?

0:05:14 > 0:05:16There's about 25 different experiments I've signed

0:05:16 > 0:05:18up for, which are all going to be done on myself,

0:05:18 > 0:05:21ranging from investigating my gut,

0:05:21 > 0:05:24samples of saliva and urine and blood and all sorts.

0:05:24 > 0:05:27What about stuff we have physically to keep ourselves alive with?

0:05:27 > 0:05:31- The food, where does that come from? - Food is mostly tinned food.

0:05:31 > 0:05:32Fresh food is very hard to come by.

0:05:32 > 0:05:33Whenever we get a supply vehicle,

0:05:33 > 0:05:36maybe there'll be a small amount of fresh food on there if we're lucky.

0:05:36 > 0:05:41I'm going to ask the loo question, Tim. How? Where? What happens?

0:05:41 > 0:05:43The loo just uses air.

0:05:43 > 0:05:46A vacuum pump that keeps air flow going in the right direction.

0:05:46 > 0:05:48- Instead of water?- Instead of water.

0:05:48 > 0:05:52So, whether it's a number one or a number two, just rely on that

0:05:52 > 0:05:54vacuum pump, the air flow, to keep everything in the right place.

0:05:54 > 0:05:57Amazing. Tim, I'll let you get back to your training.

0:05:57 > 0:05:59You've got lots do before you launch. Thanks for talking to us.

0:05:59 > 0:06:02- Thanks.- Can you believe Tim is actually going to be going in space

0:06:02 > 0:06:05and one of the more exciting things for me is looking at the shirt.

0:06:05 > 0:06:07See that patch? Troy, you're a genius.

0:06:07 > 0:06:11Your patch is going to be in space with Tim every step of the way.

0:06:11 > 0:06:13It's out of this world.

0:06:13 > 0:06:15Space joke to finish. No? OK.

0:06:16 > 0:06:19Don't forget to think about Tim and the patch

0:06:19 > 0:06:21when you're tucking into your turkey on Christmas Day.

0:06:21 > 0:06:24I love that. Now, as you can see,

0:06:24 > 0:06:27three of our candles are now shining really brightly on our Advent Crown,

0:06:27 > 0:06:31which means there is only one week to go until our Christmas special.

0:06:31 > 0:06:33I am so excited so make sure you're watching cos there's going to

0:06:33 > 0:06:36be fun, lots of singing and also a few surprises.

0:06:36 > 0:06:39Thank you so much to all of you who have been

0:06:39 > 0:06:41sending in your brilliant Christmas card crackers.

0:06:41 > 0:06:42We've been loving them

0:06:42 > 0:06:45and we'll try and display as many as we can on next week's show.

0:06:45 > 0:06:47But now, in the meantime,

0:06:47 > 0:06:49a little Christmas make from the lovely Radzi.

0:06:49 > 0:06:53Yes, indeed, feast your eyes upon these delectable delights.

0:06:53 > 0:06:56They are Christmas trees with surprise treats.

0:06:56 > 0:06:58Those treats are chocolate. Now you're interested, aren't you?

0:06:58 > 0:07:01It's easy to make as well. All you need are these:

0:07:15 > 0:07:16So now let's get to the making.

0:07:16 > 0:07:21So the very first thing we do is we take our newspaper

0:07:21 > 0:07:24and already, from the edge, I've marked out 30 centimetres

0:07:24 > 0:07:28and drawn a line just down there which I'll now cut out.

0:07:28 > 0:07:31The thing that I love most about this make is that you don't

0:07:31 > 0:07:33really need to know many measurements. This is one of them.

0:07:33 > 0:07:38Already you can see, you might think that isn't particularly neat,

0:07:38 > 0:07:40but that doesn't matter at all.

0:07:40 > 0:07:44For the time being, I'll move this bottom page out to one side here

0:07:44 > 0:07:46and then I will roll it.

0:07:46 > 0:07:50The tighter that you roll the newspapers together,

0:07:50 > 0:07:53the thinner the trunk of your tree will be

0:07:53 > 0:07:56because that is what this is making, the trunk of our tree.

0:07:56 > 0:08:01Then I'll simply secure it with some sticky tape here like so.

0:08:01 > 0:08:04I'll do exactly the same at the top here

0:08:04 > 0:08:07and I'll cover the entire thing in wrapping paper.

0:08:07 > 0:08:10When you've done that you'll have a trunk which looks like this.

0:08:10 > 0:08:13If I were to let go of it, it would fall over so we need a base

0:08:13 > 0:08:18for our trunk, which is where the yoghurt pot or paper cup comes in.

0:08:19 > 0:08:25I'm going to cut it approximately in half, which will look like this.

0:08:25 > 0:08:28Already I've put inside the modelling clay

0:08:28 > 0:08:31and that will act as the stability for my trunk

0:08:31 > 0:08:35and I'm then going to wrap all of that in wrapping paper,

0:08:35 > 0:08:38including the actual inside of the modelling clay

0:08:38 > 0:08:39which you can see there.

0:08:39 > 0:08:43To help keep it that extra bit neat, I've stuck it all at the bottom.

0:08:43 > 0:08:46So I bring back my trunk, slot it in there

0:08:46 > 0:08:50and I'll forget about that for the time being.

0:08:50 > 0:08:53So the next part is I'm going to draw an arc.

0:08:53 > 0:08:57This circle is going to be 30 centimetres in radius.

0:08:57 > 0:08:59I don't have a compass that big, which is

0:08:59 > 0:09:03why I've made my very own with a pencil and a piece of string.

0:09:03 > 0:09:06Then I'm going to cut around that line there, leaving me

0:09:06 > 0:09:10with a segment of a circle just like this one here.

0:09:10 > 0:09:14If you imagine, I'm then going to fold that into a cone,

0:09:14 > 0:09:16so that's where my sweets are going to go into.

0:09:16 > 0:09:20So, along here, here, here, here, here, I'm going to mark Xs,

0:09:20 > 0:09:21and that will be where the sweets go in.

0:09:21 > 0:09:23When you've done that,

0:09:23 > 0:09:26you'll have a segment that looks exactly like that there.

0:09:26 > 0:09:30Then it's just a case of putting holes into all those Xs.

0:09:30 > 0:09:33Just to help me slot those sweets in.

0:09:33 > 0:09:36So I'll bring back one I've done earlier,

0:09:36 > 0:09:38turn it around so you can see it a bit more easily.

0:09:38 > 0:09:41Under this X there I'm going to put my modelling clay,

0:09:41 > 0:09:45because that's where I'm going to press my pencil in there.

0:09:45 > 0:09:48I'll do the same on the other X as well.

0:09:48 > 0:09:51Please do ask an adult for help if you need it.

0:09:51 > 0:09:56Then I'm going to press my pencil all the way through

0:09:56 > 0:10:01and that actually makes the perfect size for the sweets,

0:10:01 > 0:10:03which we'll see in just a second.

0:10:03 > 0:10:05Now it comes to the folding part.

0:10:05 > 0:10:09I'll take this here and then I'll fold.

0:10:09 > 0:10:13This is the part which everybody is going to see when they look at it,

0:10:13 > 0:10:15so if you're going to take your time on any part,

0:10:15 > 0:10:17this would be the time that you want to take

0:10:17 > 0:10:21a little bit of care and attention on.

0:10:21 > 0:10:24I'll stick one piece at the top.

0:10:24 > 0:10:27One piece at the bottom as well.

0:10:27 > 0:10:29When you've had a bit more time than myself,

0:10:29 > 0:10:31you will have a cone which looks like this,

0:10:31 > 0:10:35with the holes pushed through there all looking very sturdy.

0:10:35 > 0:10:41Then comes my favourite part of this make. It is the sweets part.

0:10:41 > 0:10:44Now you can choose traditional sweets. In fact, here are my sweets.

0:10:44 > 0:10:46You can go for some healthy snacks,

0:10:46 > 0:10:50or you can make your own truffles like we have done here.

0:10:50 > 0:10:53Actually, that sounds complicated. It really is not.

0:10:53 > 0:10:55All you need to do is take some cream, take some melted butter,

0:10:55 > 0:10:58put it in a bowl together, mix it and pour it over some chocolate.

0:10:58 > 0:11:02Let it set in a fridge and then that will leave you with a substance

0:11:02 > 0:11:04which looks like that.

0:11:04 > 0:11:06So I'll take my truffle and dig a bit out.

0:11:06 > 0:11:08I'm going to try and make these about marble-sized,

0:11:08 > 0:11:10which is the perfect way.

0:11:10 > 0:11:13I want as much chocolate or truffle as possible, but also, I don't

0:11:13 > 0:11:17want it to be too heavy when I start sticking them all on to my tree.

0:11:17 > 0:11:20So once I've rolled those, they can be in any shape that you want,

0:11:20 > 0:11:22I'll then dip those into my cocoa,

0:11:22 > 0:11:26which just stops it from sticking to the foil.

0:11:26 > 0:11:30Then it comes to the wrapping part. I'll bring this up here.

0:11:30 > 0:11:34I take my truffle, pop it into my foil.

0:11:34 > 0:11:37You don't need to be neat about this part whatsoever.

0:11:37 > 0:11:39Ideally, you'll have cleaner fingers than I've got.

0:11:39 > 0:11:42And then you stick your foil on to the wrapping paper.

0:11:42 > 0:11:46Fold your four corners up here and then,

0:11:46 > 0:11:51this is what's going to create the nib to then push in to my trees.

0:11:51 > 0:11:55Then I'll wrap it, wrap it, wrap it.

0:11:55 > 0:11:57Then I'll stick all around there, neaten it up,

0:11:57 > 0:12:02leaving you with a truffle that looks like that one just there.

0:12:02 > 0:12:07So then I'll press this into my cone here.

0:12:07 > 0:12:09Once you've done that all the way around the cone,

0:12:09 > 0:12:13you will have a cone which looks like this.

0:12:13 > 0:12:16You want to talk about taking shape? Look at that there.

0:12:16 > 0:12:20I'm definitely going to have a sweet as soon as this make is over.

0:12:20 > 0:12:23If we look at the finished products we've got there,

0:12:23 > 0:12:25the only thing that's missing is the tinsel.

0:12:25 > 0:12:26That is the piece de resistance.

0:12:26 > 0:12:30That's what makes this tree no ordinary tree, but a Christmas tree.

0:12:30 > 0:12:32So I'll start with my tinsel at the very top

0:12:32 > 0:12:35and the beautiful thing about this is actually,

0:12:35 > 0:12:41as you go around, just simply going around acts as a glue.

0:12:41 > 0:12:45And a particular Blue Peter top tip is that

0:12:45 > 0:12:48I'll go round each of the sweets individually,

0:12:48 > 0:12:53so when you pull them out, the tinsel still stays nice and tight.

0:12:53 > 0:12:58Then, when you put the cone on top of your base, you will have a

0:12:58 > 0:13:01finished product which looks like these three magnificent

0:13:01 > 0:13:03forests that we have here.

0:13:03 > 0:13:06I think that they look rather good.

0:16:23 > 0:16:26The Blue Peter Sport Badge 2015,

0:16:26 > 0:16:30and that gave one of you at home the chance of a lifetime.

0:16:30 > 0:16:34You might have noticed we've mentioned the Blue Peter Sport Badge

0:16:34 > 0:16:35just a few times this summer.

0:16:35 > 0:16:38What's important is this.

0:16:38 > 0:16:42- You could be...- ..the proud owner... - ..of a Blue Peter Sport Badge.

0:16:42 > 0:16:45We're going to be inspiring you like we've never inspired you before.

0:16:45 > 0:16:47If you've earned your sport badge this summer,

0:16:47 > 0:16:50you've also had the chance to be on the judging panel

0:16:50 > 0:16:53for Young Sports Personality of the Year.

0:16:53 > 0:17:00We've had over 7,500 applications, but only one judge can be selected.

0:17:00 > 0:17:01And here she is.

0:17:01 > 0:17:03My name's Mina.

0:17:03 > 0:17:07I got my Sport Badge by encouraging my friend to start boxing.

0:17:11 > 0:17:14I like the fact that it's generally a boys' sport,

0:17:14 > 0:17:17but I can prove that girls can box.

0:17:17 > 0:17:21I'd like to represent Team GB for boxing in the Olympics.

0:17:21 > 0:17:24I felt really excited when I heard that I was going to be on the panel.

0:17:24 > 0:17:28I was looking forward to going to Manchester to do the judging.

0:17:29 > 0:17:33'It's judging day, and the panel has the difficult job

0:17:33 > 0:17:36'of whittling down the top contenders.'

0:17:36 > 0:17:39Yeah, for me, she gets the A.

0:17:39 > 0:17:40She's got a lot of talent.

0:17:40 > 0:17:42She looks very dedicated.

0:17:42 > 0:17:44'The sporting standard was staggering.

0:17:44 > 0:17:47'All the nominations had achieved so much.'

0:17:47 > 0:17:50When I started looking at their background,

0:17:50 > 0:17:52I sort of put together people in my head that

0:17:52 > 0:17:56I knew could have a chance and couldn't have a chance.

0:17:56 > 0:17:59But we had to decide our final top three.

0:18:01 > 0:18:05And Blue Peter can exclusively reveal who they are right now.

0:18:06 > 0:18:08Top GB gymnast Ellie Downie,

0:18:08 > 0:18:12British Paralympic swimmer Tully Kearney,

0:18:12 > 0:18:14and up-and-coming jockey Tom Marquand.

0:18:17 > 0:18:21Hi, my name's Tom Marquand, and I'm an apprentice jockey.

0:18:21 > 0:18:24I won the 2015 Champion Apprentice Award.

0:18:24 > 0:18:27COMMENTATOR: Low Key, running away from his rivals,

0:18:27 > 0:18:29will win the Cesarewitch Trial in good style.

0:18:29 > 0:18:32I first started riding when I was about two years old,

0:18:32 > 0:18:35but I didn't set foot on a horse racing circuit until I was

0:18:35 > 0:18:38about 12 years old, when I borrowed a friend's pony to do pony racing.

0:18:38 > 0:18:41Since then I've been hooked, racing every day of the week.

0:18:41 > 0:18:43It makes it a very busy schedule.

0:18:43 > 0:18:44I think my best moment so far

0:18:44 > 0:18:47was definitely winning the Apprentice Championship.

0:18:47 > 0:18:50To be able to say to myself I achieved that much in such

0:18:50 > 0:18:52a short space of time, it was a massive thing for me.

0:18:56 > 0:18:59COMMENTATORS: Come on, Ellie!

0:18:59 > 0:19:00- Oh!- That'll do nicely!

0:19:00 > 0:19:03That is a bronze medal!

0:19:03 > 0:19:05Hi, I'm Ellie Downie, Great Britain gymnast.

0:19:05 > 0:19:08I won two bronze medals this year, one in the European All-Around,

0:19:08 > 0:19:10and one in the World Championships as a team.

0:19:10 > 0:19:12CHEERING

0:19:12 > 0:19:15- COMMENTATORS: Wow! - Oh, just look at the emotion there!

0:19:15 > 0:19:18I just knew that I had to do one of the best vaults that I could.

0:19:18 > 0:19:21I knew I couldn't mess up, and I had to do it for the girls

0:19:21 > 0:19:23and for myself.

0:19:23 > 0:19:25Big block...two twists.

0:19:25 > 0:19:27Dead in the middle. Wow!

0:19:29 > 0:19:31It's definitely a good sport to get involved in,

0:19:31 > 0:19:34I definitely recommend it, cos it's my life and I love it.

0:19:41 > 0:19:43Hi, my name's Tully Kearney.

0:19:43 > 0:19:46I'm a para-swimmer, and this year I won four world

0:19:46 > 0:19:49titles at the World Championships, a silver and a bronze.

0:19:49 > 0:19:52Winning gold at the World Championships was a dream come true,

0:19:52 > 0:19:55something I never thought would happen, and standing on the

0:19:55 > 0:19:58podium and hearing the national anthem play was just amazing.

0:19:58 > 0:20:01I have always swum from a young age for physio with my disability,

0:20:01 > 0:20:03But what really inspired me to get into it

0:20:03 > 0:20:06was looking up to my brother and watching him train,

0:20:06 > 0:20:08and knowing that my mum was a swimmer too.

0:20:08 > 0:20:10I would say that if you can believe it, you can achieve it.

0:20:10 > 0:20:13Even if people put you down, just listen to yourself,

0:20:13 > 0:20:15believe in yourself, and you can do it.

0:20:18 > 0:20:22Being nominated for Young SPOTY is definitely amazing.

0:20:22 > 0:20:25'It's a massive thing to be considered for such an award

0:20:25 > 0:20:27'at such a young age.'

0:20:27 > 0:20:28'I was completely shocked.

0:20:28 > 0:20:31'I never thought I'd be nominated for an award like this.'

0:20:33 > 0:20:36You know, being ranked alongside Wayne Rooney, Tom Daley...

0:20:36 > 0:20:37It's incredible.

0:20:38 > 0:20:40To be in that mix was...

0:20:40 > 0:20:42pretty ridiculous!

0:20:42 > 0:20:44It was a dream come true, like,

0:20:44 > 0:20:46I just...couldn't believe it.

0:20:47 > 0:20:51Remember, you can find out who wins on BBC One on the 20th of December.

0:20:51 > 0:20:52Make sure you're watching.

0:20:52 > 0:20:55As well as that, we've got a Blue Peter exclusive

0:20:55 > 0:20:58behind the scenes in the New Year, so make sure you stay tuned.

0:20:58 > 0:21:00But first, what do you get when you cross Shaun the Sheep

0:21:00 > 0:21:02and three very cheeky llamas?

0:21:02 > 0:21:04This.

0:21:17 > 0:21:21That looks so good! Please welcome the director of The Farmer's Llamas,

0:21:21 > 0:21:24Jay Grace, and he's brought Shaun the Sheep and friends! Hello, Jay!

0:21:24 > 0:21:28- Hi!- That looks brilliant. Everyone in the studio was bopping along!

0:21:28 > 0:21:29Looks like a lot of fun.

0:21:29 > 0:21:32That's the Christmas special, you've worked on some brilliant shows,

0:21:32 > 0:21:36Wallace and Gromit, Chicken Run, Pirates, you've done them all,

0:21:36 > 0:21:38and now this, The Farmer's Llamas Christmas special.

0:21:38 > 0:21:40So tell us a little bit about it.

0:21:40 > 0:21:44Well, it's the story of what happens when Shaun meets our three llamas,

0:21:44 > 0:21:48Raul, Fernando and Hector, and he takes them back to the farm,

0:21:48 > 0:21:52and he has to deal with the chaos that they create there.

0:21:52 > 0:21:56Sounds good. Now, The Farmer's Llamas uses stop frame animation.

0:21:56 > 0:21:58What exactly is that, how does it work?

0:21:58 > 0:22:00Well, with stop frame animation,

0:22:00 > 0:22:03what we do is use puppets like the ones we've got here,

0:22:03 > 0:22:07and the animator has to pose them into a position,

0:22:07 > 0:22:11like the farmer here, and then move it a tiny little bit like that,

0:22:11 > 0:22:14then they step away and they take a picture,

0:22:14 > 0:22:17then they have to go back in again and move it a little bit more,

0:22:17 > 0:22:20and step away and take another picture, and they have to do that...

0:22:20 > 0:22:23- Wow!- ..24 times to make a second.

0:22:23 > 0:22:26And then when we play it back, that's the finished film

0:22:26 > 0:22:28that you'll see on the TV.

0:22:28 > 0:22:30Now, we had the absolute legend Peter Lord,

0:22:30 > 0:22:32who came on Blue Peter a few months ago,

0:22:32 > 0:22:34and he showed us Morph and how Morph works,

0:22:34 > 0:22:36but obviously, Shaun's a little different,

0:22:36 > 0:22:38cos he's not just one piece of clay, is he?

0:22:38 > 0:22:42He isn't, no, Morph is the simplest character you will ever animate.

0:22:42 > 0:22:44He is just literally a piece of plasticine,

0:22:44 > 0:22:47- whereas Shaun and the other guys here...- He's fluffy!

0:22:47 > 0:22:50He's fluffy, and he has inside him something that we call an armature.

0:22:50 > 0:22:53- It's like a metal skeleton.- Wow!

0:22:53 > 0:22:55You see here, this is Shaun.

0:22:55 > 0:22:59So he's got bits of wire for his legs and he's actually fluffy,

0:22:59 > 0:23:01as you said, so his body's made of wool,

0:23:01 > 0:23:04- and his face is actually made of a kind of plastic.- Can I touch it?

0:23:04 > 0:23:07- You can touch that.- Oh, yeah, that's not at all clay, is it?- No, it's not.

0:23:07 > 0:23:10In fact, the only thing on Shaun that is clay are his eyelids,

0:23:10 > 0:23:12- which he doesn't have there.- Really?

0:23:12 > 0:23:15- Yeah, so that's the only little bit that we still have clay.- OK.

0:23:15 > 0:23:17So if these characters aren't modelled from clay,

0:23:17 > 0:23:20how on earth do you do the facial expressions?

0:23:20 > 0:23:22- Cos they're very expressive, aren't they?- They are.

0:23:22 > 0:23:26But luckily, these characters all come along with their own mouth set.

0:23:26 > 0:23:29- Oh, wow!- So you can see here, this is the farmer's mouth set.

0:23:29 > 0:23:31Each of those mouth shapes is a different expression,

0:23:31 > 0:23:33so depending on how he's feeling,

0:23:33 > 0:23:36and it's a really simple procedure to change them over.

0:23:36 > 0:23:38- So, literally, don't scream... - Uh-oh!

0:23:38 > 0:23:40- Pop his head off.- Aah, poor farmer!

0:23:40 > 0:23:42So he can go from being a happy,

0:23:42 > 0:23:46- jolly-looking farmer to this one here, maybe...- Oh, right!

0:23:46 > 0:23:48Looking a little bit kind of puzzled,

0:23:48 > 0:23:49usual kind of farmer thing,

0:23:49 > 0:23:52and what the animator has to do then is just smooth

0:23:52 > 0:23:54around the edge a little, make it look and neat and tidy.

0:23:54 > 0:23:56So it looks like it's always been there.

0:23:56 > 0:23:58Looks like it's always been there, yeah.

0:23:58 > 0:24:01And the plasticky stuff is made to look like plasticine as well.

0:24:01 > 0:24:03And then we just pop that back on, and there we go.

0:24:03 > 0:24:06He's got his head back, and there you go! Not even a second there.

0:24:06 > 0:24:09That's right, it means the animator can concentrate more

0:24:09 > 0:24:11on the action and less on the sculpting.

0:24:11 > 0:24:13- I love it, can I have a go? - Yeah, sure.- OK.

0:24:13 > 0:24:15So I'm going to take his head off, it's gone.

0:24:15 > 0:24:18HE LAUGHS That came off easier than I thought.

0:24:18 > 0:24:20And then I'll just put his mouth there. What shall I go for?

0:24:20 > 0:24:22- Er...- Kind of an "Ooh"?

0:24:22 > 0:24:25- I think that's a good farmery expression.- I'll take that one.

0:24:25 > 0:24:29- He's cross at Shaun here. Ooh!- That's right, then get it all smooth.

0:24:29 > 0:24:32Then just... Oh, that's harder than you think. Ooh!

0:24:32 > 0:24:33It is quite hard, isn't it?

0:24:33 > 0:24:36Yeah, that's really tough. So kind of smooth it down...

0:24:36 > 0:24:39It's not looking very good, you're better at it than me,

0:24:39 > 0:24:40I need some practice.

0:24:40 > 0:24:42- You need bigger thumbs, that's what it is.- Is that the secret?

0:24:42 > 0:24:44So there he is, a farmer saying, "Ooh!"

0:24:44 > 0:24:46- SHE LAUGHS - That's brilliant.

0:24:46 > 0:24:49Now, I've got to ask you, why llamas? Seems quite random.

0:24:49 > 0:24:52Well, they're very exciting-looking creatures for a start,

0:24:52 > 0:24:54but actually, they're distantly related to sheep,

0:24:54 > 0:24:57which was a great coincidence when we were looking for ideas.

0:24:57 > 0:25:00And we thought that Shaun would naturally be drawn to these

0:25:00 > 0:25:03- kind of, slightly familiar yet exotic creatures.- Fluffy, as well.

0:25:03 > 0:25:06And so it seemed like a natural choice, really.

0:25:06 > 0:25:08And also it makes for a great title, Farmer's Llamas.

0:25:08 > 0:25:10- Rhymes.- Yeah.- There you have it.

0:25:10 > 0:25:13That's not the only reason for making a Christmas special, though!

0:25:13 > 0:25:14I know it was!

0:25:14 > 0:25:18Now, as well is that, when you animate, you don't necessarily just

0:25:18 > 0:25:21guess how they are going to look, you get quite involved, don't you, Jay?

0:25:21 > 0:25:24We do like to get involved, yes, any excuse, actually.

0:25:24 > 0:25:26So we normally start with a storyboard,

0:25:26 > 0:25:30which is the drawn version of the film, and then from that,

0:25:30 > 0:25:31we'll go and do what we call a LAV,

0:25:31 > 0:25:34which is a live action video recording.

0:25:34 > 0:25:37It's when we actually film ourselves acting out what the characters do.

0:25:37 > 0:25:39I love this, it looks so funny,

0:25:39 > 0:25:41we've got a clip of you doing that here.

0:25:41 > 0:25:43So there you are, some cola being stolen.

0:25:43 > 0:25:46- You're playing a little sheep? - I'm playing Timmy, there, yes.
