7:00:04 > 7:00:06It's 2016, and we're back.

7:00:06 > 7:00:09Coming up today, we've an amazing performance from Joe McElderry

7:00:09 > 7:00:11and his Technicolor Dreamcoat.

7:00:11 > 7:00:13It's a brand-new year, so I'm celebrating

7:00:13 > 7:00:15with a brand-new challenge.

7:00:15 > 7:00:17On today's show, I'm going to be walking on fire!

7:00:21 > 7:00:22What did you do that for?

7:00:22 > 7:00:26Cos you said fire, and safety never takes a day off.

7:00:44 > 7:00:45APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

7:00:45 > 7:00:49Hello! Welcome to live Blue Peter.

7:00:49 > 7:00:51- Happy New Year, it's 2016! - We're back!

7:00:51 > 7:00:54- And Radzi's doing his Happy New Year dance.- Yes, indeed, my friend.

7:00:54 > 7:00:58It's good to be here. We've got so much more coming up on today's show.

7:00:58 > 7:00:59Check this out.

7:00:59 > 7:01:01I go behind the scenes and get exclusive access

7:01:01 > 7:01:04at one of the most prestigious sports event in the country,

7:01:04 > 7:01:06Sports Personality of the Year 2015.

7:01:06 > 7:01:11Speaking of 2015, we look at some of our favourite moments of last year.

7:01:11 > 7:01:15- Such a good year.- An awesome year. - I think 2016 will be even better.

7:01:15 > 7:01:18- Yes.- It got us thinking, we want to hear from you.

7:01:18 > 7:01:22What do you think we should get up to this year on Blue Peter?

7:01:22 > 7:01:24Jump online right now. Leave a comment,

7:01:24 > 7:01:26we'll read out as many as we can at the end of the show.

7:01:26 > 7:01:29Let's walk this way. We're missing Barney Harwood, but hopefully,

7:01:29 > 7:01:33- he's dried off.- Where is he?- He's in the Blue Peter garden. There he is!

7:01:33 > 7:01:38He's going to show that, this year, Blue Peter is going to be on fire.

7:01:38 > 7:01:41Yeah. Quite literally, guys. As you can see, it's really cold outside.

7:01:41 > 7:01:45That's why I'm wearing a coat and woolly hat. I'm slightly nervous.

7:01:45 > 7:01:48You can probably hear a crackling noise. It leads to this question.

7:01:48 > 7:01:51Who wants to see me walking across fire in my bare feet?

7:01:51 > 7:01:54- CHEERING IN THE STUDIO - OK. Thanks very much!

7:01:54 > 7:01:58There it is, in all its glory. This just looks terrifying.

7:01:58 > 7:02:01Karen, could you come in, please, hold my hand and give me a cuddle?

7:02:01 > 7:02:03Aw. Bless.

7:02:03 > 7:02:06The idea today is I'm going to walk across that in my bare feet.

7:02:06 > 7:02:08Let's go back in time and work out

7:02:08 > 7:02:11who thought it was a good idea to do this in the first place,

7:02:11 > 7:02:15- and how long ago was that?- You can take it back over 3,000 years.

7:02:15 > 7:02:17In different continents around the world,

7:02:17 > 7:02:21everyone will have a ceremony or ritual involving walking on fire,

7:02:21 > 7:02:24be it a test of strength or courage,

7:02:24 > 7:02:29or it could be going from childhood into adulthood.

7:02:29 > 7:02:31So they'd walk across it to prove they were strong people.

7:02:31 > 7:02:34- To prove they were strong. - I don't think I'm that strong.

7:02:34 > 7:02:37- I know you're that strong. - Let's talk about temperature.

7:02:37 > 7:02:39We're stood quite away from it and it's boiling.

7:02:39 > 7:02:43That's because the temperatures are going to be about 660 Celsius

7:02:43 > 7:02:45that you're walking on.

7:02:45 > 7:02:51So a kettle is 100, boiling. That's six times as hot. OK. Fine.

7:02:51 > 7:02:55Obvious question, how am I not going to burn my feet walking across that?

7:02:55 > 7:02:58Science. And being in the right mental state

7:02:58 > 7:03:02that you want to take that first step quickly, followed by others.

7:03:02 > 7:03:04As you can feel the heat here, we love wood,

7:03:04 > 7:03:08it's excellent as a source of heat. It radiates heat incredibly well.

7:03:08 > 7:03:10It just doesn't conduct heat well.

7:03:10 > 7:03:12So with a short contact time,

7:03:12 > 7:03:16the brisk pace you'll be walking on that, keep moving, you'll be fab.

7:03:16 > 7:03:19- You did talk me through this earlier on.- But now we see the flames.

7:03:19 > 7:03:24We've got what I need to have in my head sorted, my mental state.

7:03:24 > 7:03:26But, most importantly, how brisk that walk is,

7:03:26 > 7:03:29- how quick I walk across. - Brisk walking pace.

7:03:29 > 7:03:31Karen, for now, thank you very much.

7:03:31 > 7:03:33One thing's for sure, by the time I've done this,

7:03:33 > 7:03:36I am going to be totally toasty.

7:03:36 > 7:03:38Do not try this at home, please.

7:03:38 > 7:03:41Radzi, Lindsey, it's been nice knowing you!

7:03:41 > 7:03:45- It's not often we see Barney nervous, is it?- Yikes.

7:03:45 > 7:03:47You can tell he's a little bit anxious.

7:03:47 > 7:03:49That is going to start the year off so well.

7:03:49 > 7:03:52Barns, what was your favourite moment of last year?

7:03:52 > 7:03:55- My favourite moment?- Yeah. - Genuinely, my favourite moment was

7:03:55 > 7:03:57when Radzi did his front flip at gymnastics.

7:03:57 > 7:04:00I was with him in Glasgow, we drove down together in my camper van.

7:04:00 > 7:04:01We had a brilliant time.

7:04:01 > 7:04:04Radzi would call me during training and tell me how hard it was.

7:04:04 > 7:04:07I know he put a lot of effort into getting it right.

7:04:07 > 7:04:10When he finally did it, I was proud, like a big brother,

7:04:10 > 7:04:11it was an amazing moment for me.

7:04:11 > 7:04:13That film still makes me cry, Radz.

7:04:13 > 7:04:16My favourite moment, it's tricky -

7:04:16 > 7:04:18Iggy's birthday, or Trapeze Challenge. That was so fun.

7:04:18 > 7:04:20- That was incredible. - And I liked the outfit.

7:04:20 > 7:04:23Mine was following in the footsteps of my hero, Martin Luther King,

7:04:23 > 7:04:26doing the walk that changed the world. I will never forget that.

7:04:26 > 7:04:29But it's not just about us, it's about you at home.

7:04:29 > 7:04:31Here are your thoughts as well.

7:04:34 > 7:04:37Wow. What a year on Blue Peter.

7:04:54 > 7:04:56- 'He's on track to do this. - So close.'

7:05:01 > 7:05:04I really liked it when Barney was driving the drone

7:05:04 > 7:05:07and trying to get it through the hoops.

7:05:07 > 7:05:09It's like watching a really cool computer game.

7:05:09 > 7:05:12- BOTH:- Our favourite part of Blue Peter 2015

7:05:12 > 7:05:16- is where Lindsey runs the marathon. - It was so epic.

7:05:17 > 7:05:22Every step I take now is a step closer to the end.

7:05:22 > 7:05:23We've just got to keep going.

7:05:23 > 7:05:26My favourite thing on Blue Peter this year was...

7:05:26 > 7:05:30..Radzi doing his gymnastics challenge.

7:05:32 > 7:05:33Oh!

7:05:33 > 7:05:37I only get one chance to get it right. It makes it so much harder.

7:05:41 > 7:05:42- COMMENTATOR:- Oh, it's a big move.

7:05:42 > 7:05:45He went for the front somersault, and he's nailed it.
